Sacred Ground: Jamgon Kongtrul on "Pilgrimage and Sacred Geography"
Snow Lion Publications; Boston, USA; 1559391642; First Edition; Hard Cover; New; New; 16 Cms x 24 Cms
Jamgön Kongtrul Lodrö Tayé (1813-1899) was one of the most influential figures and prolific writers in the Tibetan Buddhist world. He was a founder and the single most important proponent of the nonsectarian movement that flourished in eastern Tibet and remains popular today. Two additional texts discuss his previous lives and recount Kongtrul's final days. "Filled with insight into the human heart. It stands out as a superb example of a genuinely unbiased approach to spirituality, which is of particular relevance to our modern world."--The Dzogchen Ponlop Rinpoche "More than a biography, the story of the extraordinary Kongtrul is an inspiration to all serious students of Buddhist practice and scholarship. Unparalleled in benefiting beings, his life exemplifies the most noble of human endeavors--the accomplishment of receiving and practicing, codifying and transmitting, the entirety of Tibet's spiritual traditions. We are fortunate that one of the most gifted translators of our times, Richard Barron, has brought forth this treasure."--Erik Pema Kunsang, translator of Kongtrul's "Light of Wisdom" series "Reading the autobiography of this supreme master gives us an understanding of the truly wondrous deeds that bodhisattvas perform, filling our minds with awe and our hearts with faith. It inspires us to actualize our own inherent potential that allows the qualities of the bodhisattvas to manifest within ourselves. This book is a priceless treasure to be studied and revered."--Khenpo Tsultrim Gyamtso Rinpoche "To glimpse the origins of Buddhism in Tibet, we must read accounts of the lives of such masters as Milarepa and Guru Rinpoch8}É{c9}é. To survey Tibetan Buddhism at its fullest flowering many centuries later, we must read this book, the autobiography of the lama who gave Tibetan Buddhism its definitive form. Richard Barron, brilliant translator of some of the most important Buddhist texts to appear in English, again offers us a meticulous translation of a crucial, challenging work. This book is a must-read for any person committed to the Tibetan Buddhist path of reflection and meditation."-- Ngawang Zangpo, author of Sacred Ground and Guru Rinpoché Printed Pages: 574. 020858

Testing Spoken Language: A Handbook of Oral Testing Techniques (Cambridge Handbooks for Language Teachers)
Cambridge University Press; Cambridge, UK; 1989; 0521312760; Reprint; Paperback; As New; Very Good; 15 Cms x 23 Cms
This is a practical guide to designing and using oral tests of language ability. It is for teachers, testers, course designers and educational planners. The organisation of the book follows the sequence of stages in which a new testing programme would logically be carried out. The book takes the reader through the testing process, giving practical examples and discussing the issues involved at each stage. Testing Spoken Language removes testing from the realm of the specialist and presents it as an integral part of a language learning programme. It describes the range of test-types and discusses their suitability for different aims and resources; lists over fifty oral test techniques and variations, with comments on each; integrates the marking system into the process of test design; and provides suggestions for monitoring and improving a test once it is in use. Contents Acknowledgements; Introduction; 1. Aims and resources; 2. Test types; 3. Elicitation techniques; 4. Marking systems; 5. Test evaluation; Appendices; Index. Printed Pages: 126. 033415

20027 Niccolao Manucci; Translated By William Irvine
Storia Do Mogor or Mogul India 1653-1708, 4 Vols.
Munshiram Manoharlal Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 1981; 8170691214; Reprint; Hardcover; New; New; 15 x 23 Cm
A well-known traveller's account of Mughal India, Manucci the Venetian's work, which has been typically out of print for a long time ever since its appearance in 1907-9, is now offered in full and unexpurgated form. It is a faithful and vivid picture of Mediaeval India from 1656-1680. Like Tavernier and Brucer, two equally famous travellers' works, Hedges' Diary of Mughal Provincial Administration, Gemeli Careri's visit to Aurangzeb's camp in the Deccan in 1695 and Catrou's Histoire Generale de l' Empire du Mogol (1715), founded on the memoirs printed in these pages, this voluminous four-volume work is of both subjective and objective value which can hardly be overestimated. Written in a charming style, the book is truly a magnum opus of the celebrated author who visited India in 1656 and was associated with the Mughal Court for over half a century. He offers herein, besides other intimate details, an account of Hindu religion, manners, customs, and description of Muhammadan weddings and funerals. The book is a veritable mine of otherwise inaccessible data about a period of Indian history which everyone should know. Comprehensive in its groundwork and masterly and lucid in its details, Manucci's book, as presented in its English garb by Irvine, ranks among the most authoritative sources at the disposal of the historian of the future. A painstaking exploration of life as lived in an important period of Mughal history, the book is crowded with facts carefully and ably translated and edited with historical footnotes which help in understanding them and their relation to the administrative, political and social condition of the time. Few MSS, were more worth translating and few have had a better translator. Printed Pages: 2036. 014775

Autobiography of an Archive: A Scholar’s Passage to India
Permanent Black; New Delhi, India; 2015; 8178244586; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New; 15 x 23 Cm
The decades between 1970 and the end of the twentieth century saw the disciplines of history and anthropology draw closer together, with historians paying more attention to social and cultural factors and the significance of everyday experience in the study of the past. The people, rather than elite actors, became the focus of their inquiry, and anthropological insights into agriculture, kinship, ritual, and folk customs enabled historians to develop richer and more representative narratives. The intersection of these two disciplines also helped scholars reframe the legacies of empire and the roots of colonial knowledge. In this collection of essays and lectures, history’s turn from high politics and formal intellectual history toward ordinary lives and cultural rhythms is vividly reflected in a scholar's intellectual journey to India. Nicholas B. Dirks recounts his early study of kingship in India, the rise of the caste system, the emergence of English imperial interest in controlling markets and India's political regimes, and the development of a crisis in sovereignty that led to an extraordinary nationalist struggle. He shares his personal encounters with archives that provided the sources and boundaries for research on these subjects, ultimately revealing the limits of colonial knowledge and single disciplinary perspectives. Drawing parallels to the way American universities balance the liberal arts and specialized research today, Dirks, who has occupied senior administrative positions and now leads the University of California at Berkeley, encourages scholars to continue to apply multiple approaches to their research and build a more global and ethical archive. Castes of Mind: Colonialism and the Making of Modern India
Orient BlackSwan/Permanent Black; New Delhi, India; 2003; 8178240726; Softcover; New;
The author argues that caste is neither an unchanged survival of ancient India nor a single system that reflects some core culture. Rather than being an expression of Indian tradition, he argues that caste, as we know it now, is a relatively modern phenomenon, the product of the encounter between India and British colonial rule. This is not to suggest that the British invented caste, but to show that it was on account of British domination that caste became a single term capable of naming as well as subsuming India’s diverse forms of social identity and organisation. Dirks also examines the rise of caste politics in contemporary India, in particular caste-based movements and their implications for Indian nationhood.Printed Pages: 388. 101971

The Politics Book: A Lexicon of Political Facts from Abu Gharib to Zippergate
Research Press Private Limited; New Delhi, India; 8173141363; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New;
apologise One of the hardest things for any politician to do, but one that will be required of them if they breach parliamentary etiquette or are to survive the exposure of personal misjudgement or wrongdoing. Joseph Chamberlain’s motto was ‘Never apologise, never explain, never retract’; Spiro Agnew’s, ‘Apologise now. It will save time later’. In the twelve years since the publication of the now legendary Brewer’s Politics, the political lexicon has grown exponentially, as politics itself appears to have entered a terrifying, global age. Taking up where Brewer’s left off, The Politics Book provides a snapshot of where the language of politics finds itself today. A unique blend of hard facts, political insight and searing wit, The Politics Book navigates the soundbites, the put-down and half-truths politicians use to express themselves, and explores the meaning of terms, phrases and concepts that have become part of our daily vocabulary. The Indo-Aryan Origins and Other Vedic Issues
Aditya Prakashan; New Delhi, India; 2011; 8177421158; First Edition; Softcover; New; 15 x 23 Cm
This book contains studies by a well-known Greek Indologist who repeatedly considers the thorny problem of Indoaryan origins and finds its solution in indigenism. The studies examine various aspects of the Indo-European common heritage and of the Vedic Tradition. One study analyses the position of the early Hittite Culture in relation to the other IE branches and especially Vedic. Another traces the common names of deities in the different IE cultures. Two studies compare Vedic and Mesopotamian and Vedic and Egyptian interconnections respectively. Others examine purely Vedic issues like the religio-philosophical thought in the Vedas and the real meaning of the words pur 'defensive structure ' and samudra 'confluence of waters, ocean'. In all these studies the Vedic inheritance emerges as the oldest of all IE traditions, older than even the Near eastern cultures; the bulk of the Rgveda hymns appear to have been composed in the 4th millennium; and the Indoaryans are shown to have been residing in North-West India (and Pakistan) since about 5000 BCE. The writer arrives at these conclusions by examining and comparing evidences from the linguistic, literary, anthropological and archaeological fields (and from Genetics). Almost all the studies in this volume deal with subjects of Vedic and I(ndo-)E(uropean) provenance, i.e. relations of Vedic with Greek, Latin etc. and the fabricated Proto-Indo-European itself. Moreover, all the essays kick off from the RV (Rgveda). They move centripetally from the RV to the diverse areas of Anthropology, History, Linguistics, Philosophy, Poetry and Religion, examining one or other aspect from a new perspective and leading to new unexpected conclusions. When the evidences from Sanskrit and the RV are cosidered, the current theories about, for instance, the origin and development of language and religion are seen to be faulty and in need of thorough revision.;In addition, the cumulative evidences from all these different areas (and others) show that the Indoaryans are indigenous to India from at least the 7th millennium BCE, that Vedic is much older than any other IE language and closest to the Proto-Indo-European mother tongue and that all past and current IE studies should be scratched and a fresh start be made, if it is still thought to be necessary.;;Dr. Nicholas Kazanas is Greek-born. He was educated chiefly in Britain. He read English Literature in University College; Economics and Philosophy at the School of Economic Science; Sanskrit in the School of Oriental and African Studies - all in London. He did his post-graduate studies at SOAS and in Pune and Varanasi. He taught for some years in London. For more than ;20 years now he is the Director of Omilos Meleton, a Cultural Institute in Athens. He has various publications in Greek; several peer-reviewed academic Journals, Western and Indian, have printed his articles on Indology. Colored Cosmopolitanism: The Shared Struggle for Freedom in the United States and India
Orient BlackSwan/Permanent Black; New Delhi, India; 2012; 8178243539; Hardcover; New; New;
Colored Cosmopolitanism is the first detailed examination of both ends of this transnational encounter. Nico Slate tells the stories of neglected historical figures, like the “Eurasian” scholar Cedric Dover, and offers a stunning glimpse of people we thought we knew. Prominent figures such as Mahatma Gandhi, Jawaharlal Nehru, Swami Vivekananda, Booker T. Washington, W.E.B. Du Bois, and Martin Luther King, Jr., emerge as never before seen. Slate reveals the full gamut of this exchange—from selective appropriations, to blatant misunderstandings, to a profound empathy—as African Americans and South Asians sought a united front against racism, imperialism, and other forms of oppression.Printed Pages: 344. 101959

Nature, Environment and Society: Conservation, Governance and Transformation in India
Orient BlackSwan; New Delhi, India; 2012; 8125045325; Hardcover; New; New;
The future of humanity lies uncertain as nature falls prey to the loot and plunder initiated in the name of development, growth and progress today. As the vast riches of the earth continue to be endangered, a global consciousness regarding the importance of natural resources, biodiversity, etc. is on the rise. Given such a scenario, what is required is further understanding of man’s interaction with the environment.This contributory volume examines the interrelationship between nature and society in South Asia. It focuses on four points: perception of natural resources during colonial rule, conservation of nature, role of governments in administering environment, and transformation of nature as a result of development or industrial projects. The book divided into three broad themes, analyses the major decisions taken in India with regard to environment after Independence and their consequences; the relationship between communities which consider natural environment as an essential part of their identity, and as a key factor for social, political and economical issues; and the urban explosion and/or the construction of infrastructure such as dams or roads that have impacted the relationship between different social groups and their territory. It also examines the set-up (policy and stakes), process and consequences (often the displacement of populations) of such projects in three different states of India.Printed Pages: 260. 101842

The Art of Sanskrit Poetry: An Introduction to Language and Poetics
Munshiram Manoharlal Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2003; 8121510791; First Edition; Hard Cover; New; New; 19 Cms x 25 Cms
This book is both an introduction to Sanskrit and an investigation into the relationship between nine basic affective states (bhava) and the form they take in the absence of self-interest (tatasthya) according to the theory of Indian aesthetics as developed in the Dhvanyaloka and the Abhinavabharati. To illustrate the process of aesthetic appreciation the different categories of suggestion (dhvani) in a continuous twelfth century poetic text (kavya), and the various forms of aesthetic experience (rasa) which the suggestions initiate, are analysed consecutively. The aspects of culture, mythology, astronomy, botany, etc., which were particularly characteristic of mediaeval India, are discussed in the notes on the basis of references to Vedic, Upanisadic, Epic, and Puranic texts, as well as to other anthologies of poetry, but also to recent scientific literature in order to explicate them in a more multidisciplinary context. The grammatical section is based on the text. The vocabulary facilitates alternative translations and hence different suggestions and aesthetic experiences. The General Index includes explanations of all grammatical forms and translations of Sanskrit technical terms plus cross references of English-Sanskrit and Latin-English-Sanskrit regarding flora and fauna. Pearls of the Orient: Asian Treasures from the Wellcome Library
Serindia Publications; Chicago, USA; 2003; 0906026601; First Edition; Hard Cover; New; New; 9 x 12.25 Inches
The Wellcome Library in London preserves one of the major collections in Europe of manuscripts, printed books and pictorial material relating to Asia. This is largely due to the enthusiasm and vision of the American-born pharmacist and philanthropist, Sir Henry Wellcome. Although celebrated as a library devoted to medical history and related topics, the Asian Collections document in text and illustration practically every area of human endeavour found among the many peoples and cultures of the East. The Wellcome Trust, an independent research-funding charity originating from Wellcome's will, supports the Library and its work today as an international resource for the history and understanding of the medicine. This lavishly illustrated book conveys the richness and diversity of Wellcome's legacy in a series of studies contributed by experts from the UK, Germany and Russia, all of whom have worked on the Wellcome Asian Collections over the last 25 years. Each chapter reflects a different region of Asia, its peoples and culture, in which something of the variety of the Asian Collections preserved in the Wellcome Library can be appreciated. The different languages and their scripts, the various materials used for writing, the multiplicity of cultural and religious backgrounds and their antiquity are exemplified in the Asian Collections. Today they constitute a major resource for study and research of Asia's cultural and social history so beautifully illustrated in this publication. Alternative Realities: Love in the Lives of Muslim Women
Westland Limited; New Delhi, India; 9789383260324; Softcover; New;
“Who hasn’t been in love? At least once in their lifetime? People think only a man and a woman can make a couple. But, the truth is, anybody can fall in love with anybody. A man can fall in love with a man, a woman can fall in love with a woman. But society doesn’t accept such love” – Nisho in ‘Rakhi Sawant of Sind’ Alternative Realities is a travelogue, a memoir, a satire and a feminist critique of Muslim women’s lives, interwoven with the author’s own ongoing struggles as a Muslim woman. Each chapter presents personal stories of women living in cities, small towns and villages in India, Pakistan and Bangladesh, the three lands to which Nighat Gandhi belongs. In writing their stories, she attempts to break the silence enshrouding Muslim women’s sexuality and the ways in which they negotiate the restrictions placed on their freedoms within the framework of their culture. Women like Ghazala, who prefers the life of a second wife, ‘living like a married single woman’, to being bound within the ties of a conventional marriage, Nusrat and QT who believe theirs is a normal marriage, except that they are both women. Nisho, who refuses to accept that her trans-sexuality should deny her the right to love and Firdaus, writer and feminist, who can walk out of a loveless marriage but not give up on love, with or without marriage. Nighat also explores her own story as a woman who dared to make choices that pitted her against her family and cultures. Alternative Realities is her jihad or struggle to deconstruct the demeaning stereotypes that prevail about all Muslim women. It is a reflection of the myriad ways in which, despite these misogynistic forces, they continue to weave webs of love and peace in their own lives and in the lives of those they live with. 109612

The Sikh Gurus and the Sikh Society
Munshiram Manoharlal Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 1975; 8121503035; Second Revised Edition; Hardbound; New; New; 14 Cms x 22 Cms
The Sikh Gurus and the Sikh Society essays to present a social analysis of the facts, factors and forces that attended the origin and evolution of the Sikh society in the sixteenth and seventeenth century. Originating as a protestant faith within the broader framework of contemporary Hinduism and more or less in a line with other earlier and contemporary protestant faiths and cults of northern India, the Nanak-panth achieved nevertheless and in less than half-a-century, an integrity and identity of its own and provided for itself a solid secular base, which other contemporary protestant sects and cults could not do. It also confronted contemporary Islam in Indian and despite violent political conflicts with contemporary Muslim rulers, sought consciously to work out a socio-cultural synthesis of the two cultures without allowing any sufferance to their basic tenets derived from Hinduism. The monograph provides a skilful analysis of the medieval socio-religious, economic and political situation to show how the Sikh Gurus and the expanding community of their sishyas (=Sikhs) responded actively and creatively to the contemporary situation and became stronger and more well-knit. In the process of this analysis many new insights have been presented, many new suggestions and interpretations offered and many new questions raised. Of the two long appendices one is given to an academic analysis of the historical antecedents and of the nature and character of sahaj which is the highest mystical experience in Guru Nanak's faith; another brings the story of Sikhism and the Sikh society uptodate, that is, from the death of Guru Gobind Singh to the beginning of the twentieth century. History of the Bengali People: From Earliest Times to the Fall of the Sena Dynasty (Second Edition)
Orient BlackSwan; New Delhi, India; 2014; 8125050531; Second Edition; Softcover; New;
Niharranjan Ray’s highly acclaimed magnum opus, Bangalir Itihas: Adi Parva, translated here as History of the Bengali People is a seminal work on the history of the Bengalis from the earliest times to the beginning of the Muslim rule in India. As much a work of literature as of history, this book is not a story of kings and the extension of their power but of the life of ordinary people. Thus, through detailed, methodical discussions on origins of the various peoples, their language and literature, science, trade and commerce, religious practices and rituals, there emerges a vivid picture of society and its development through the passage of time. This able translation by J. W. Hood has retained the vibrancy and subtle nuances of the Bengali original. In his Foreword to this edition of the translation, Sumit Sarkar writes: ‘Niharranjan Ray was, indeed, a towering figure among my generation of historians. But not many scholars are familiar with his writings these days. The new edition of the English translation, which has done full justice to the original version, hopefully will rectify this.’Printed Pages: 660. 101896

Munshiram Manoharlal Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 1970; 8121504325; First Edition; Cloth; New; New; 19 Cms x 25 Cms
Tantra Yoga is a way of life...a practice based upon the philosophy of Human Experience, by means of which the Wisdom of Reality can become a part of one's innermost Nature. The Tantra is the way of the Yogi-Mystic of the East, who, through practice of this Yoga, is able to transmute the normal "Mortal-Consciousness" into "Cosmic-Consciousness", and so experience the Blissful Joys of Reality. This book summarizes the tradition of Tantra Yoga from its origin and development in the earliest times to the present. The spread of tantrism...Animist, Hindu, Jain, Buddhist and Sufic...from the original centres to Tibet, and thence to the West, is discussed, and the influence of this special esoteric teaching on both science and religion, is indicated. The philosophical, psychological and practical aspects of Tantra Yoga are presented, with detailed chapters on the Tantric Cosmology, Theory of Evolution, Concept of Vibration, Alchemy, Symbolism, Ritual, Rite and Sadhana (Yoga practice). Light is shed on the problems and joys which underlie the experience of life, and practical methods are indicated for overcoming the "obscuring" factors and for attaining the Tantric Realization. The symbolism and esoteric "language" is indicated and explained through the medium of sixty six beautiful colour plates, and the explanations are clarified and supported by quotations from relevant authoritative texts such as the Bhagavad Gita, Upanishads, Tibetan Book of the Dead, Hevajra Tantra, Mahanirvana Tantra and original texts, as also from the works of leading scholars. This book is a concise guide through the inner principles and outer practices of Tantra Yoga. Printed Pages: 1353 with 66 four-colour illustrations. 027985

Gifted
Penguin; New Delhi, India; 2007; 0143103059; First Edition; Paperback; New; 16 x 23 Cm
Rumi Vasi is ten years, two months, thirteen days, two hours, forty-two minutes and six seconds old. The probability of her walking home from school with John Kemble is 0.2142, a probability severely reduced by the lacy frock and thick woollen tights she is forced to wear by her father. Numbers have filled Rumi’s world since she first learned to count. It was on a trip to India at the age of eight that her mathematical powers acquired their almost supernatural significance. When she returned home to Cardiff, her destiny was sealed: she was now the town’s ‘maths prodigy’. But Rumi is growing up and numbers no longer occupy her every waking moment: she abandons her homework to seek out friendship and replaces equations with stories from Malory Towers. And, as the family’s stark isolation intensifies, so too does Rumi’s desire for love. A dazzling novel of high aspirations and deep longing, Nikita Lalwani’s debut captures brilliantly the battle to come of age in an emotional and comic hinterland where history, arithmetic and cumin seeds all play a part.
