Composing a Tradition: Concepts, Techniques and Relationships. Proceedings of the First Dubrovnik International Conference on the Sanskrit Epics and Puranas, August 1997
Croation Academy of Sciences and Arts; Zagreb, Croatia; 1999; 953-154-382-8; First Edition; Hard Cover; New; New; 18 Cms x 25 Cms
The Dubrovnik Conference brought together scholars from distant parts of the world, from several continents, concentrated upon the same vast subject. Croatia as the host country continued its traditions of Indological interest and research, this time, however, with international participation surpassing all previous initiatives. The papers collected in the Proceedings under the title Composing a Tradition: Concepts, Techniques and Relationships represent contributions of a very high standard of learning and scholarly research that will certainly make an impact on the field of Sanskrit Epics and Puranas. The book deserves to be received with interest wherever such studies are pursued, and the breadth of its approach should also commend it to a much wider circle of the interested educated public. Redemption Stories
Zen Publications/D.K. Printworld (P) Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 8188071668; Softcover; New;
“Redemption can result from reaching out when we have many good reasons not to. It can come from forgiving the unforgivable. Redemption is often the result of opening a closed heart -- no matter how justified we have been in shutting it. Redemptions are the hard mental, emotional and spiritual reversals in life. The woman who was in my office when this book was conceived said about the difficulty of redemptive work: “It’s like making a U-turn with your face pressed up against granite.” And although redemptive paths often require great exertion, the success of that effort is not always in the hands of the one making the effort. I think redemption straddles the border between the territory of the psyche -- where effort and intention are useful and necessary -- and the mysterious dimensions of spirituality from which grace emerges.”-- from the Introduction to Redemption Stories: Unwasted Pain PRAISE FOR Redemption Stories: Unwasted Pain For her book, Redemption Stories: Unwasted Pain, psychotherapist Mary Ciofalo collected the narratives of people who have experienced trauma and come out the other side...Despite the sadness in these pages, Ciofalo’s book is not depressing. In fact, the overall effect is hopeful, even inspiring. The message is that there are second chances -- even for people who have committed hideous crimes, or been victims of senseless violence. -- quoted from Connie Matthiessen, New Bernal Journal This book is definitely a brightly shining candle in a sometimes-darkening world. Redemption Stories will mean a lot to people who are lucky enough to find it... I spent much of last night reading it. And that’s the first and most important comment: this book is compelling reading -- and not just because of the stories themselves, but because of the very clear and compelling telling. The Politics of Heritage from Madras to Chennai
Indiana University Press; Bloomington, USA; 2008; 0253352231; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New; 24 Cms X 16 Cms
In this anthropological history, Mary E. Hancock examines the politics of public memory in the southern Indian city of Chennai. Once a colonial port, Chennai is now poised to become a center for India's "new economy" of information technology, export processing, and back-office services. State and local governments promote tourism and a heritage-conscious cityscape to make Chennai a recognizable "brand" among investment and travel destinations. Using a range of textual, visual, architectural, and ethnographic sources, Hancock grapples with the question of how people in Chennai remember and represent their past, considering the political and economic contexts and implications of those memory practices. Working from specific sites, including a historic district created around an ancient Hindu temple, a living history museum, neo-traditional and vernacular architecture, and political memorials, Hancock examines the spatialization of memory under the conditions of neoliberalism. Women's Studies in India: A Reader
Penguin; New Delhi, India; 2008; 0143063774; First Edition; Paperback; New; 14 x 22 Cm
Women’s studies first emerged in India during the 1970s as a forceful critique of those processes that had made women invisible after independence—invisible not only to society and the state, but also to higher education and its disciplines. Since that beginning, so much has happened in this already vast field that it would be hard to find a major issue or subject that has not been addressed by scholars and activists. This comprehensive reader sets out to provide a map of the development of women’s studies and the ever expanding terrain that it has been investigating. The introduction explores the growth of the field from the upheavals of the 1970s to the transformed conjunctures of the 1990s. In the process, the often elusive relationships between women’s studies, the women’s movement and the structures of higher education are highlighted. Over eighty edited essays have been brought together in this single volume under distinct thematic clusters—from the new beginnings of the 1970s to politics, history, development, violence, the law, education, health, family and household, caste and tribe, religion and communalism, sexualities, and literature and the media. This reader is for both newcomers to women’s studies and for those who have long been part of it. Printed Pages: 680. 031728

The Krishnamurti Reader
Penguin; New Delhi, India; 2002; 0143029134; First Indian Edition; Paperback; New; New; 13 Cms x 19 Cms
This reader introduces to a wide public one of the most extraordinary and profoundly influential teachers of the twentieth century. Krishnamurti was educated by Annie Besant to be the World Teacher and the salvation of the nations; he rejected this Messianic role, announcing that he did not seek disciples, but his gentle, simple and human example inspired Aldous Huxley and continues to influence seekers after truth in our own day. Krishnamurti did not have a ‘philosophy’. Rather, he hoped to liberate people from all systems—from the bonds of ideology and received opinion as well as from organized religion, from the tyranny of the mind and the tyranny of the body. His message, addressed directly to every individual, is one of unity and wholeness, of total understanding and total love. As the Observer said of one of his books, ‘For those who wish to listen, it will have a value beyond words.' Printed Pages:256. 000760

Intimate Class Acts: Friendship and Desire in Indian and Pakistani Women’s Fiction
Oxford University Press; New Delhi, India; 0199466742; Hardcover; New; New;
The economically privileged Lenny is able to taste the forbidden delights of the adult world because of her ayah. The romantic relationship between Sai, an upper-class Gujarati girl, and Gyan, a lower-middle-class Nepali boy, crosses both class and ethnic boundaries. The marriage between Ram, an aristocratic Hindu, and Rose, a working-class Englishwoman, transgresses racial and class lines while also reinforcing patriarchal hierarchies. These relationships in Ice-Candy-Man, The Inheritance of Loss, and Rich Like Us reveal striking similarities in how gendered and classed identities are lived in India and Pakistan.In this scholarly work, Maryam Mirza examines ten novels in English by women writers from the Indian subcontinent. She explores the role of power and desire, and of emotional and physical intimacy in cross-class relations. Among others, Mirza examines well-known novels such as Arundhati Roy’s The God of Small Things and Kamila Shamsie’s Salt and Saffron, and works that have hitherto drawn limited critical attention, such as Moni Mohsin’s The End of Innocence and Brinda Charry’s The Hottest Day of the Year. Mas Oyamas's Complete Karate Course
Goodwill Publishing House; New Delhi, India; 8172451555; Softcover; New;
Karate is currently enjoying wide popularity the world over. We encounter it frequently in books, films, and on television. There are few people who have not seen a demonstration of brick or wood breaking or a single bare-handed man defeat a host of armed opponents.But karate is much more than this. It was developed over a thousand years ago, not only as a form of unarmed combat, but as a way to discipline the body in order to improve the spirit. In this way, a unity of body and spirit could be achieved.If this sounds too abstract, perhaps we can use terms that are easier to deal with. Besides conditioning the body and improving speed, strength, and co-ordination, karate increases one's alertness and self-awareness. It also teaches confidence not cockiness or brashness-but a deep confidence in one's abilities to deal with the world around him. And with confidence comes calmness and a sense of inner peace.This is the true karate, the karate that one can practice years after he can no longer break bricks. But everything must have- a beginning and great things cannot be accomplished in a handful of days. In karate, the beginning is the physical forms-the punches, kicks, and blocks that we have all seen. These are the techniques that enable an adept karate to perform the seemingly impossible feats that he does.Not everyone who studies karate achieves success, but if you are able to master the techniques described in this book, you could be one of them. Work with patience and perseverance and you are sure to find some measure of satisfaction. You must also work with caution, always bearing in mind that karate is a combat form and enables one to deliver a blow of devastating power. Techniques applied improperly or with insufficient care could cause injury to you or others. May your pursuit of karate be a rewarding one. Printed Pages: 256. 108097

Hath-Kaghaz: History of Handmade Paper in South Asia
Aryan Books International; New Delhi, India; 2013; 8173054606; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New; 22 x 28 Cm
This is the first attempt to have an overall view of the history of handmade paper in South Asia ranging from ‘prehistory’ of paper to the present situation of paper manufacture, based on extensive and intensive fieldworks carried out in 1977-78, 1994-95 and 2003 in various countries in South Asia, West and Central Asia, and in Europe. Researches were carried out on the textual references to early Indian paper, searching into the catalogues of old manuscripts as well as on the actual extant examples now housed in various museums and libraries including old Jaina Jnanabhandars and Hindu temples, mostly in west India. In order to observe the present situation of papermaking in South Asia, the author travelled throughout the subcontinent from Kashmir and Tibetan border of Nepal to Kanyakumari, and from Balochistan in Pakistan to Dhaka in Bangladesh, visiting many papermaking ateliers, interviewing the local people who are or had once been involved in this craft. Research results were compiled at the Indian Institute of Advanced Study in Shimla in 2004-05, and further revised in 2008. Comprehensive, detailed and strikingly illustrated, this volume will go a long way in highlighting this centuries-old craft and paving the way for further researches on the subject. The Asian Menu Planner
Lustre Press/Roli Books; New Delhi, India; 8174367489; Hardcover; New; New;
At last a comprehensive easy-to-use book on Asian recipes. This rather novel menu planner introduces the reader to some of the most delectable and popular dishes from China, Thailand and India. The book is divided according to country and the recipes are further organized according to courses - each planner thus complete with starters, main course, desserts and accompaniments. The cuisine of China, Thailand and India are as diverse as they are similar. Each has its characteristic food, legacy of different historical pasts, and yet each is linked by its typical climate and the trappings that come with it, like coconuts, black pepper and red chillies. In each of the three, food continues to be woven into the rituals of everyday life and the preparation, partaking and offering of food is a major preoccupation. Each country has it own ways of serving and presenting a meal. In Thailand, food is shared from a common bowl, in China, everyone has small individual bowls and a pair of chopsticks and, in India, the north uses steel plates with raised sides (thalis) while the south eats from banana leaves. So delve into the culinary mysteries of the Orient and plan your meals by choosing a starter from one page, the main dish from another and the dessert and accompaniment from yet another. 108646

Twelve-year-old Sarojini’s best friend, Amir, might not be her best friend any more. Ever since Amir moved out of the slum and started going to a posh private school, it seems like he and Sarojini have nothing in common. Then Sarojini finds out about the Right to Education, a law that might help her get a free seat at Amir’s school – or, better yet, convince him to come back to a new and improved version of the government school they went to together. As she struggles to keep her best friend, Sarojini gets help from some unexpected characters, including Deepti, a feisty classmate who lives at a construction site; Vimala Madam, a human rights lawyer who might also be an evil genius; and Mrs. Sarojini Naidu, a long-dead freedom fighter who becomes Sarojini’s secret pen pal. Told through letters to Mrs. Naidu, this is the story of how Sarojini learns to fight – for her friendship, her family, and her future. Printed Pages: 292. 109468

Philosophy of Quantum Mechanics: Quantum Holism to Cosmic Holism; The Physics and Metaphysics of Bohm
Global Vision Publishing House; New Delhi, India; 2008; 8182202582; Hardcover; New; New;
Physics and philosophy inextricably intertwine in this book. Physics unravels the splendour of nature while philosophy discloses its profoundness. Physics unveils the regularity of nature through the physical laws while philosophy transcends and transforms it into a fabulous noematic vision of disclosure. The author uses a fourfold strategy in this book. In the firstfold, the life and influences of Bohm are explained so that the reader can trace his intellectual shoreline. The secondfold examines the conceptual development of the physical theory of quantum mechanics, its interpretation as Copenhagen Mechanics and the criticism of Copenhagen Mechanics. In the thirdfold, Bohmian Mechanics or the quantum holism is examined in detail. The fourthfold delves deep into the Bohmian metaphysics that is basically derived from physics and describes its salient features and its symbolic representation. A philosophical exami-nation is conducted on this holistic mythopoeic cosmology of Bohm that is extended from his quantum vision to the cosmic reality. Printed Pages: 427. 110054

Principles of Buddhist Tantra: A Discourse on Cittavisuddhi-prakarana of Aryadeva
Munshiram Manoharlal Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2008; 8121511909; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New; 15 x 23 Cm
This work is a textual based discourse on the Cittavisuddhi-prakarana of Aryadeva, a seminal text which describes the principle and philosophy of Buddhist Tantra. The dispute on the question of Tantric meditative practices having any philosophical foundation or whether those practices have been introduced into the ethico-religious praxis of various religious traditions as a later introduction is a continuing discussion. In this work, it is trying to prove that the introduction of Tantra into Madhyamika philosophy is a natural development and it is proved beyond doubt by reviewing an important work in the Buddhist tradition written by Aryadeva, the Cittavisuddhi-prakarana. The unique dialectical method introduced and used by the Madhyamikas to interpret their philosophy and the conception of sunyata is the guiding principle in this regard. Mdhyamika envisages that the conception of sunyata can be interpreted as the proper understanding of the insubstantial nature of object of the world (dharma-nairatmya) and the insubstantial nature of the subjective self which perceives such objects of the world (pudgala-nairatmya). The dialectics advanced by the Madhyamika is efficient in deconstructing the substantiality of the phenomenal world of objects, but that is effectively possible only after reconstructing the notion of a substantive self using Tntric spiritual practices. The sunyata as the conception of dharma-nairatmya is achieved through reconstructing the substantive notion of the phenomenal world using dialectics, while it as the conception of pudgala-nairatmya is achieved using Tantric spiritual practices. 023363

Exploring the Structure of Emptiness - Philosophical Hermeneutics of the Text Catusstava of Nagarjuna: A Translation and Interpretation
Sanctum Books; New Delhi, India; 2012; 8190995014; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New; 15 x 23 Cm
Nagarjuna is one of the finest philosophers who ever lived. This second century Buddhist philosopher from south India is known for his criticism on speculative theories and viewpoints. But his name is better known for introducing the idea of emptiness (sunyata), a philosophical concept that had hugely influenced the discourses of Eastern philosophy, religion, and culture for about 2000 years. Nagarjuna cleverly introduced emptiness (sunyata), into Buddhist discourses to explain its central philosophy: the philosophy of Middle Path. Through the negative mode of argumentation, he taught how we naturally get trapped into extreme viewpoints and speculate on them. His philosophy of Middle Path (Madhyamika) explains the progress of human reasoning moving in its natural course avoiding extreme viewpoints for finding harmony and freedom. During the second century, in a different milieu, Nagarjuna warned his students about the dangers of speculative thought created out of extreme viewpoints and philosophical doctrines. He taught them to look into the structures of such doctrines critically by using negation to know what the truth is. Therefore, the philosophical idea of emptiness (sunyata) is not the end of negation assuming perfect nihilism, but teaching us that it would work like medicine for removing all our ignorance. More precisely, it is like zero (sunya) in mathematics, a number with an undefined value, but real numbers find newer values by associating with it. It is a philosophical tool that helps us control our alleged fears, anger, petty hatred, etc., by invoking the natural course of human compassion (karuna) for us to live and die naturally. Therefore, the structure of emptiness is the philosophy of Middle Path. Printed Pages: 413. 037133

20197 Matias Kaihovirta
Oroliga inför Framtiden
Bookstore Tiedekirja; Finland; 952597636X; New;
20199 Matsuo Basho; Translated from the Japanese By Sam Hamill
Narrow Road to the Interior and Other Writings
Shambhala; Boston, USA; 2000; 1570627169; First Edition; Paperback; New; 15 x 23 Cm
Here is the most complete single-volume collection of the writings of one of the great luminaries of Asian literature. Basho (1644–1694)—who elevated the haiku to an art form of utter simplicity and intense spiritual beauty—is best known in the West as the author of Narrow Road to the Interior, a travel diary of linked prose and haiku that recounts his journey through the far northern provinces of Japan. This volume includes a masterful translation of this celebrated work along with three other less well-known but important works by Basho: Travelogue of Weather-Beaten Bones, The Knapsack Notebook, and Sarashina Travelogue. There is also a selection of over two hundred fifty of Basho's finest haiku. In addition, the translator has provided an introduction detailing Basho's life and work and an essay on the art of haiku.
