The Raven Crown: The Origins of Buddhist Monarchy in Bhutan
Serindia Publications; Chicago, USA; 1995; 1932476210; First Edition; Hard Cover; Brand New; Brand New; 22 x 29 Cm
The hereditary monarchy of the Wangchuk dynasty was established in 1907 in the independent Himalayan state of Bhutan, thus introducing one of the world's most recent experiments in kingship. The new order quickly replaced a theocracy founded in the seventeenth century by the first of the "Dharma Rajas", a lineage of reincarnating lamas known by the title of Shabdrung. The first king of the new dynasty, Ugyen Wangchuk (1862-1926), was a charismatic figure who came to power against a turbulent background of incessant and complex feuding. He adopted as the unique symbol of his authority a crown surmounted by the head of a raven. The bird represents a form of Mahakala, Bhutan's guardian deity. The prototype of the founding monarch's Raven Crown had first been devised as a battle helmet for his father, Jigme Namgyel (1825-81). Known as the Black Regent, he had worn it in bloody struggles against his many rivals within the country and against the British who tried, unsuccessfully, to subdue him. The story of the Wangchuk dynasty's rise and triumph moves from a picture of turmoil and chaos to one of relative peace and stability. In contrast with earlier published ac- counts based solely on the colonial records of British India, here the narrative is founded on the Bhutanese chronicles which offer a new perspective and bring many new details to light. The ethnic and historical context is outlined before recounting the turbulent career of the Black Regent, followed by the lives and achievements of the first two kings. The book is copiously illustrated with rare historical photographs that have recently come to light in private and public collections in the United Kingdom. Most of these vivid images have never previously been published. They provide a lively depth and focus to the unfolding narrative. Printed Pages: 160. 021930

The 10 Rules of Sam Walton: Success Secrets for Remarkable Results
Times Group Books; New Delhi, India; 2011; 8126529598; First Edition; Softcover; New;
Sam Walton built the largest and most successful company on Earth. What lay behind his success? He challenged existing business theories and paradigms by developing and implementing a new set of rules. The consummate entrepreneur, Walton once said, "I have always been driven to buck the system, to innovate, to take things beyond where they've been." During his career, Sam developed a list of what he considered the most important rules for entrepreneurial success. Each of these rules are easily understandable and can be duplicated by all company leaders. But, like so many things Wal-Mart does, they require a high degree of organizational discipline to implement.Printed Pages: 272. 104854

Nehru: A Political Biography
Oxford University Press; New Delhi, India; 2005; 0195647564; First Edition; Paperback; New; 14 x 22 Cm
This outstanding biography traces Nehru s political and psychological development, exploring the complexities of his character. It is perceptive and revealing about Nehru s relationship with Gandhi, the influences on him of his father and his education at Harrow and Cambridge, and of Western and Indian culture. First published in 1959, this well-researched book draws from Nehru s own writings and speeches and much material not readily available to assess Nehru as a leader and his place in history. Applying the technique of biography to shed light on political events, ideas and movements, this book uses at the same time the Indian struggle for independence as the background for a study of Nehru the man and the statesman. It will appeal to all interested in biographies and in the Indian freedom movement. Printed Pages: 698 with 32 halftones and 3 maps. 013549

A Primer of Modern Standard Hindi
Motilal Banarsidass Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2014; 8120805089; Seventh Reprint; Softcover; New;
This primer presents a systematic introduction to the structure of Modern Standard Hindi. It is intended to provide the student with a thorough foundation in the grammatical structure of that variety of Hindi that is commonly taught in Indian schools and that is the common vehicle of publication in Hindi. Although much emphasis is placed on the written language, discussion is also provided of aspects of conversational Hindi. The core of the work contains thirty on chapters. The first four offer discussions of the linguistic status of Hindi as well as comprehensive descriptions of Hindi phonetics and the Devanagari syllabary in which Hindi is written. Chapters 5 through 31 each contains descriptions of fundamental aspects of Hindi grammar. These chapters have extensive translation and grammatical exercises appended to them. The work as a whole introduces a core vocabulary of approximately fifteen hundred entries, incorporating lexical items found on most standard elementary word lists for the language. Supplemental materials in this book include graded reading passages, a guide to further study in Hindi, and Hindi English glossary. Although the Devanagari syllabary is used throughout the book, Roman transliteration is also provided through Chapter 15. A Primer of Modern Standard Hindi can be used in several different ways. It can be used as part of a university-level course as a text for Hindi grammar and writing. As such it will nicely supplement other materials addressing more conversational aspects of the language. It can also be used for self-study purposes by the student who does not have access to a formal instructional program.Printed Pages: 309. 102565

Language and Society in South Asia
Motilal Banarsidass Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 8120826078; First Edition; Hard Cover; New; New;
During the past two decades there has been a significant amount of research and publication concerning the sociolinguistics of South Asian languages. Language and Society in South Asia is the first major attempt to assess the impact of this new literature. It exposits the methodological and theoretical assumptions of sociolinguistic descriptions of south Asian languages, and contrasts them with the assumptions of earlier characterizations of these languages. An important feature of this book is its detailed examination of numerous schools of linguistic analysis within which most past descriptive work on South Asian languages has been carried out. This is done in language accessible both to the professional linguist and to non-linguists interested in social aspects of language use in South Asia. Among the topics treated in this book are traditional taxonomies of South Asian languages, South Asia as a linguistic area, social dialectology, bi- and multilingualism in South Asia, pidginization, creolization, and South Asian English, ethnographic semantics, and the ethnography of speaking. The work also contains an extensive bibliography of the scholarly literature pertinent to the study of South Asian languages in their social contexts. 029279

Forbidding Wrong in Islam: An Introduction
Cambridge University Press; Cambridge, UK; 2003; 0521536022; Paperback; New;
Michael Cook’s magisterial study in Islamic ethics, Commanding Right and Forbidding Wrong in Islamic Thought, was published to much acclaim in 2001. It was described by one reviewer as a masterpiece. In that book, the author reflected on the Islamic injunction, incumbent on every Muslim, to forbid wrongdoing. The present book is a short, accessible survey of the same material. Using anecdotes and stories from Islamic sources to illustrate the argument, Cook unravels the complexities of the subject. Moving backwards and forwards through time, he demonstrates how the past informs the present. By the end, the reader will be familiar with a colourful array of characters from Islamic history ranging from the celebrated thinker Ghazzali, to the caliph Harun al-Rashid, to the Ayatollah Khumayni. The book educates and entertains - at its heart, however, is an important message about the Islamic tradition, its values, and the relevance of those values today. Contents 1. Introduction; 2. The elements of the duty of forbidding wrong; 3. How is wrong to be forbidden?; 4. When is one unable to forbid wrong?; 5. What about privacy? 6. The state as an agent of forbidding wrong; 7. The state as an agent of forbidding wrong; 8. Is anyone against forbidding wrong? 9. What was forbidding wrong like in practice? 10. What has changed for the Sunnis in modern times? 11. What has changed for the Imamis in modern times? 12. Do non-Islamic cultures have similar values? 13. Do we have a similar value? Printed Pages: 200 with 1 map. 024520

The Koran has constituted a remarkably strong core of identity and continuity for a religious tradition that is now in its fifteenth century. Canada: Its Regions and People
Munshiram Manoharlal Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 1998; 8121508037; First Indian Edition; Hardbound; New; New; 14 Cms x 23 Cms
Canada and Canadians are currently at crossroads. Their hard-earned self-identity as constituting a distinct people, a nation-state in the political sense of the term, is now facing serious competition from other, often more basic, senses of individuals and collective identity based on language, culture, territory, religion, gender, ethnicity, social class, and religion. Whether or not Canada survives and thrives as a nation-state into the twenty-first century will depend largely on the outcome of this struggle over competing identities. If the past is an indication of the future, the ten chapters of this rather unorthodox book lead us to the conclusion that Canadians will confront and overcome, yet once again, this age-old challenge with imagination and determination. The structure of this book, which combines chapters on regions, provinces, time periods and themes with a general overview was quite deliberate. This book was conceived primarily for non-Canadian students, involved in Canadian studies, involved in Canadian studies programmes, who are seeking historical background on a wide-range of topics. Most students come to the study of Canada through their interest in contemporary Canadian literature, visual arts, music, sociology, geography, political science, government policy, trade or economics. Most of these disciplines or topics take for granted that their students possess a general basic knowledge of Canada's past. Their practitioners offer their analyses and draw conclusions which often do not make much sense to the non-Canadian students who lack a basic knowledge of Canada's past. The editors of this book felt that this problem could be overcome if we offered Indian students interested in Canadian studies a book on Canadian history. All of the contributors are from Canada and are well known specialists in their respective sub-fields of Canadian history. Each of them presents, from his or her particular vantage point, a comprehensive overview of their chosen subject matters. Printed Pages: 542. 000997

Tramjatra: Imagining Melbourne and Kolkata By Tramways
Yoda Press; New Delhi, India; 8190227246; First Edition; Paperback; New;
An unprecedented inter-cultural arts project called Tramjatra has since 1996 brought together artists and the tramways communities of Melbourne (Australia) & Kolkata (Calcutta, India) to explore their cities through the medium of tramways. In the context of increasing debates about sustainability and the impact and processes of globalisation, Tramjatra has demonstrated how new linkages made through a public arts practice of inter-cultural collaboration can enliven approaches to identifying and building upon attributes of value in a city. Through a time when Kolkata's struggling tramways have faced a persistent threat of closure and the operation of Melbourne's tramways has been privatised and automated, the Tramjatra project has provoked a broader, globally oriented engagement in what it is to move and be moved in contemporary urban life. The book explores this relationship between the movement afforded by tramways as a mode of public transport, and the contemporary social, political, economic and creative forces of movement that are manifested in the relation between these two contemporary cultures of tramways. Written in English, with a small proportion in Bengali, the book includes essays by emerging as well as internationally renowned writers and scholars (Dipesh Chakrabarty, Gayatri Spivak and so on) which discuss historical links between Melbourne & Kolkata; that examine the relation between memory and tram travel, ticketing and travelling; that revisit past events of the Tramjatra project; that locate Tramjatra in the context of western notions of public art, and in the context of debates on transculturalism and international education; and which unravel issues of translation in inter-cultural arts practice. The volume also includes short writings by a diverse range of participants and 'passengers' responding to and building upon the Tramjatra project. Supplemented with stunning visuals, this unique volume published simultaneously in India and Australia offers a journey through two cities and a contemporary relation between them via the medium of tramways. Contents forward DEPARTING 1 which tram? Identity Politics in India and Europe
Sage Publications; New Delhi, India; 2010; 8132103041; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New;
This book highlights the present perceptions of the East and the West as seen through the eyes of eminent scholars from India, and in doing so, theorises on identity politics. Identiy Politics in India and Europe combines qualitative methods (20 interviews) with historical and philosophical analysis. The first part of the book discusses the history of perceptions between the Europe of Latin Christianity and the so-called Muslim world, starting from the 7th century onwards. The second part is devoted to a discussion on the emergence of modernity and how it changed the identity politics of earlier times. The third part explores the role that intellectual elites have to play. It comprises interviews of eminent scholars and thinkers in India such as Imtiaz Ahmad and Ashis Nandy. These make for an insightful read, especially as subtle ideological differences surface in their responses to a set of common questions. The interviews are set in the historical context of the relations between Europe and the Muslim world and analysed from a theoretical angle, drawing from theories of modernity, conceptions of justice and notions of identity politics. The book will be of great interest to the world of social science academia, especially those with specific interest in the history of transnational politics. Printed Pages: 400. 029601

The Most Successful Small Business in The World: The Ten Principles
Times Group Books; New Delhi, India; 2010; 8126527048; First Edition; Softcover; New;
As statistics tell us, most of the "ventureholics" who go out on their own to start a business will ultimately fail. And the main reason behind this, as readers will learn, is because the business was not started in the right manner. Based on his decades of experience working with entrepreneurs, Michael Gerber will teach budding entrepreneurs his one-of-a-kind ten-step method, which precedes the actual building of a business, and is meant to be put into action long before the doors are ever opened. Not by writing a business plan or spending countless amounts of resources on marketing will readers learn what is essential to creating a successful small business. Implementing Gerber's ten-step method is what will ultimately decide the success and longevity of a business.Printed Pages: 188. 104888

A Dictionary of Literary Symbols (Second Edition)
Cambridge University Press; New Delhi, India; 2007; 97801521690546; Second Edition; Paperback; New; 175 x 245 Mm
This is the first dictionary of symbols to be based on literature, rather than ‘universal’ psychological archetypes or myths. It explains and illustrates the literary symbols that we all frequently encounter (such as swan, rose, moon, gold), and gives hundreds of cross-references and quotations. The dictionary concentrates on English literature, but its entries range widely from the Bible and classical authors to the twentieth century, taking in American and European literatures. For this new edition, Michael Ferber has included over twenty completely new entries (including bear, holly, sunflower and tower), and has added to many of the existing entries. Enlarged and enriched from the first edition, its informed style and rich references make this book an essential tool not only for literary and classical scholars, but for all students of literature. • A helpful and unique dictionary explaining and illustrating traditional symbols used in literature • Enlarged by about 15% from the first edition, with many new entries including BEAR, DAISY, HOLLY, SUNFLOWER and TOWER • Essential for all students and scholars of literature Contents Acknowledgments; Abbreviations; Introduction; Dictionary; Authors cited; Bibliography. Psycholinguistics (Cambridge Textbooks in Linguistics)
Cambridge University Press; Cambridge, UK; 1991; 0521276411; Reprint; Paperback; New; Very Good; 15.5 Cms x 23 Cms
This book is an introduction to psycholinguistics, the study of human language processing. It deals with the central area of this field, the language abilities of the linguistically mature, monolingual adult. It aims to be comprehensive in its coverage, dealing with both written and spoken language, and their comprehension and production, and the nature of linguistic systems and models of processing. The book is divided into two parts. Part I identifies and investigates the main contributory areas of study, concerning the nature of the language signal, the biological foundations of language (including auditory and visual systems, the organisation of language in the brain, and articulatory and manual systems), and the sources of evidence on the abstract language system. Part II reviews a number of processing models and issues, covering perception and production of speech and writing, lexical storage and retrieval, and the comprehension and production of multiword utterances. The final chapter examines the issues that arise in the context of brain damage and the consequent impairment of language processing (in aphasia and related disorders), an additional important source of evidence and area of process modelling. Psycholinguistics provides an overview of the major contemporary issues surrounding the psychological foundations of language, most of which have roots in the last decade of research. It assumes a basic grounding in linguistic theory, but it is drawn from the author’s considerable experience of teaching this subject, and has thus been designed to be accessible to students of linguistics and psychology, as well as for any reader with an interest in the psychological foundations of human language. It will be an essential work for students and specialists alike. Contents Preface; Acknowledgements; Part I. Elements of Psycholinguistics: 1. Characteristics of the language signal; 2. The biological foundations of language; 3. Sources of evidence for the language system; Part II. Processes and Models: 4. Processing the language signal; 5. Accessing the mental lexicon; 6. Understanding utterances; 7. Producing utterances; 8. Impairment of processing; References; Index of names; Subject index. Printed Pages: 532. 003113

History and Politics in Post-colonial India
Oxford University Press; New Delhi, India; 2011; 0198072481; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New; 15 x 23 Cm
The writing of history in India has been fraught with controversies. From the storm over textbooks in the 1970s, and the furore over the Babri Masjid in the 1990s, to the flaring up of religious sentiments over ‘beef-eating’ and the Ram Sethu, this book provides a synoptic view of teaching and writing of history in post-colonial India. Michael Gottlob explores historical research and teaching as important components contributing to the development of a national identity and ideas of citizenship in post-colonial India. He shows how the urge to decolonize and recover the self has given rise to several approaches that attempt to ‘reclaim’ Indian history from its colonial past. The book discusses diverse areas—like methodological research and public use of history; cultural identity and diversity; nationalism and communalism; and social movements—and deconstructs their far-reaching implications in contemporary India. It also examines the role of women, Dalits, and Adivasis to understand their position in the multicultural reality of India. Printed Pages: 311. 036595

Vrttamalastuti of Jnanasrimitra with Sakyaraksita’s Vrttamala(stuti)vivrti, (Critical Edition)
Aditya Prakashan; New Delhi, India; 2016; 8177421611; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New; 17 x 25 Cm
The Vrttamalastuti or 'Praise in the Form of a Garland of Metres Counted by Syllables' is a unique piece of literature composed by Jnanasrimitra, who taught Buddhist philosophy and other subjects at the university of Vikramasila in the first half of the 11th century. This work illustrates 150 metres in the form of a hymn, as indicated by its title. The addressee is the Bodhisattva Manjusri. With great ingenuity Jnanasrimitra manages to include the name of each metre in the respective stanza in such a manner that it becomes a natural part of the praise of Manjusri. Some of the names of the metres have no independent meaning. The author therefore uses various devices so that those words can fit in the praise of Manjusri. The commentary (Vivrti) is a most welcome aid for understanding the intricacies of Jnanasrimitra's composition. It evinces Sakyaraksita's profound scholarship and versatile knowledge. Working on these two texts for past several years, Prof. Michael Hahn published the first edition of the texts from Japan. The present revised edition is the first Indian edition in Devanagari based on that edition. Reading this book itself will be a refreshingly new experience for enthusiastic readers. The Cultural Monuments of Tibet: The Central Regions, 2 Vols
Prestel; Munich, Germany; 2014; 3791351583; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New;
The only work of its kind, this comprehensive and systematic two-volume publication examines 1,400 years of Tibet's cultural heritage in art and architecture. Focusing on Central and Southern Tibet, these two beautifully illustrated volumes are the product not only of years of scholarship but also, importantly, of the many visits and field research trips the author made over the last twenty-five years. Providing a fundamental work of reference, they include over 1,000 illustrations, most of them recent photographs by the author, and many rare and previously unpublished historical photographs, as well as over 100 architectural plans and drawings. Detailed descriptions and interpretations of the buildings, art, and furnishings of all major monasteries and significant secular buildings, as well as numerous references to both historical Tibetan, Sanskrit, and Chinese texts and to works of scholarly research in the West and in China, make this work a unique source of information for both the specialist and the general reader. This extensive documentation on the sacred art and monuments of Buddhist Tibet also provides a deeply researched history of the cultural and religious circumstances in which the sites and relics were created Printed Pages: 780. 037934

Foreigners Within the Gates: The Legations at Peking
Serindia Publications; Chicago, USA; 2006; 1932476318; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New; 9.25 x 11 Inches
Only a stone's throw away from the Imperial Palace, the Legation Quarter of Peking stood for more than half a century as 'a city apart' . Surrounded by thick walls, with entry to Chinese forbidden, the Quarter housed several hundred foreigners who lived in a miniature Europe in the heart of the Chinese capital. The Quarter boasted well-built embassies and fancy clubs which mimicked the latest European styles, maintained its own local government and postal service, and was serviced by a surprisingly large collection of banks and commercial establishments. A painful symbol of China's humiliation at the hands of western 'barbarians', the Legation Quarter was repossessed by the Chinese Government after 1949 and all foreigners were evicted. Little remains of the old Quarter today. Foreigners within the Gates reconstructs the story of the Peking Legation Quarter -- the 'little Europe' placed arrogantly in the heart of the Imperial capital -- tracing the Quarter's origins in the 18th century treaties of Tianjin and Peking, through the perilous Siege during the Boxer Rebellion of summer 1900, the rebuilding of the Quarter following th Boxer Settlement, the Japanese occupation of the 1930's, and finally the disappearance of the Quarter following the communist 'liberation'. The book's collection of rare photographs, numerous maps and lively prose provide a dramatic picture of one of the most fascinating encounters between China and the outside world -- inside the capital of the Middle Kingdom itself. Orient BlackSwan; New Delhi, India; 2003; 8125023771; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New;

Metatheater and Sanskrit Drama
Munshiram Manoharlal Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 1995; 8121506794; First Edition; Cloth; New; New; 19 Cms x 25 Cms
In 1963, Lionel Abel's book, Metatheatre: A New View of Dramatic Form, was published. The basic idea of metatheater is that of multiple 'layers' of illusion. The prefix 'meta-', here, suggests 'beyond', 'above', or 'within'. Metatheater, in one of its senses, can be viewed as one make-believe (dramatic) world superimposed upon another make-believe (dramatic) world. Or as one dramatic world framed within another dramatic world. The most easily understandable example of this relationship is the 'play-within-the-play'. The question might be asked what relevance such a recent topic of literary criticism in the West would have to a study of ancient Sanskrit drama. Each of the six essays in Part One of this book provides an effective answer. In the sixth essay, a translation is given of the passage in the Abhinavabharati, wherein Abhinavagupta comments on the term 'natyayita'. Remarkably, this ancient Sanskrit term is most appropriately translated by the freshly minted English word, 'metatheater'! And it is through an understanding of this 30-year-old English term ('metatheater') that one is able to obtain a revealing insight into what Abhinava was saying one thousand years ago about 'natyayita', a term used on Sarira Abhinaya, and illustrated by Abhinava with a reference to Subandhu's play, Vasavadatta Natyadhara. The first five essays illustrate how profoundly a knowledge of the metadramatic structure of Sanskrit plays will affect the way in which they are to be understood and translated. Part Two of this book presents the text and translation of, and commentary on, two Sanskrit faces which were written in the seventh century A.D. by the South Indian king, Mahendravarman. These two plays superbly illustrate the multi-dimensional splendor of 'metatheater' in Sanskrit drama. Printed Pages: 174. 033962

On Changing the World: Essays in Political Philosophy, from Karl Marx to Walter Benjamin
Aakar Books; New Delhi, India; 9789350024553; Softcover; New;
This collection of essays – including several translated to english for the first time – cover a wide range of topics and figures too often neglected by the dominant trends in Marxist literature. Löwy offers a unique exploration of the role of romanticism as one of the key sources of the Marxist critiruq of capitalist civilization. And he shows how Rosa Luxemburg, Antonio Gramsci, and Walter Benjamin all share an understanding of socialism as the only true human alternative to the modern forms of exploitation and oppression found in a capitalist society. similar themes are pursued in the engaging essays on religion, Utopia, and other topics."Only the Stalinist gospel of convenient quotations is dead, not Marxist writing. Michael Lowy illustrates the vitality of the latter. His collection of essays, combining scholarship with passion, impresses by its sweep and scope. It ranges from liberation theology to the problem of 'progress' in Walter Benjamin. And, since it tackles such issues as utopia and nationalism, the book is also highly topical." —Daniel Singer, author, Deserter from Death. Printed Pages: 216. 111708
