Encounters With Infinity: A Metamathematical Dissertation
Motilal Banarsidass Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 8178221853; Softcover; New;
Like a collection of poems with an underlying mystical theme, this dissertation is a kaleidoscope puzzle of images and thoghts and concepts and ideas taken from mysticism, science, logic, and mathematics. Tthis treatise on infinity is the result of two mystical experiences of the author, the first in February 1950 and the second fourteenyears later in ovember 1964.These experiences were more real to him that with God. For him they came from the future as a glimpse of mankind`s potential destiny. His thesis is an attempt to point out a path that makes the yet to be discovered universe viable. 102185

Dakini Power: Twelve Extraordinary Women Shaping the Transmission of Tibetan Buddhism in the West
Snow Lion Publications; New York ,USA; 1559394072; First Edition; Paperback; New; 16 x 24 Cm
How 12 Tibetan Buddhist Teachers Succeed in Merging East and West - including Pema Chödrön, Joan Halifax, and Thubten Chodron, among others Personal reflections and life stories from 12 contemporary female Tibetan Buddhist teachers, both Westerners and Tibetans, who share insights into how they discovered their true calling, overcame barriers, and developed the courage, determination, and wisdom to progress on the spiritual path. What drives a young London librarian to board a ship to India, meditate in a remote cave by herself for twelve years, and then build a flourishing nunnery in the Himalayas? How does a surfer girl from Malibu become the head of the main international organization for Buddhist women? Why does the daughter of a music executive in Santa Monica dream so vividly of peacocks one night that she chases these images to Nepal, where she finds the love of her life in an unconventional young Tibetan master? The women featured in Dakini Power—contemporary teachers of Tibetan Buddhism, both Asians and Westerners, who teach in the West—have been universally recognized as accomplished practitioners and brilliant teachers whose life stories demonstrate their immense determination and bravery. Meeting them in this book, readers will be inspired to let go of old fears, explore new paths, and lead the lives they envision. Featured here are: • Jetsun Khandro Rinpoche (This Precious Life) • Dagmola Sakya (Princess in the Land of Snows) • Jetsun Tenzin Palmo (Diane Perry) (Into the Heart of Life) • Pema Chödrön (Deirdre Blomfield-Brown) (When Things Fall Apart; Start Where You Are) • Khandro Tsering Chödron (most familiar to readers as the late aunt of Sogyal Rinpoche, author of The Tibetan Book of Living and Dying) • Thubten Chodron (Cherry Greene) (Buddhism for Beginners; Taming the Mind) • Karma Lekshe Tsomo (Patricia Zenn) (Buddhism Through American Women ’s Eyes) • Chagdud Khadro (Jane Dedman) (P ’howa Commentary; Life in Relation to Death) • Sangye Khandro (Nanci Gay Gustafson) (Meditation, Transformation, and Dream Yoga) • Roshi Joan Halifax (Being with Dying) • Lama Tsultrim Allione (Joan Rousmanière Ewing) (Women of Wisdom; Feeding Your Demons) • Elizabeth Mattis-Namgyel (The Power of an Open Question). Indian Culture and India's Future
D.K. Printworld (P) Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2011; 812460567X; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New; 15 x 23 Cm
Can Indian civilization be compared to a "thousand-branched tree"? What have been its outstanding achievements and its impact on the world? These are some of the questions this book asks. But it also deals with issues confronting more and more Indians caught in an identity crisis: What does it mean to be Indian? What is specific to the worldview developed by Indian culture? How has it dialogued with other cultures? Is it built on durable foundations, or is it little more than colourful religiosity and quaint but outdated customs? And what are the meaning and application of secularism and tolerance in the Indian context? The French-born author, who has been living in India for 33 years, argues that Indian culture is not some exotic relic of the past, but a dynamic force that still has a role to play in defining India's identity and cohesion, and in proposing solutions to today's global challenges. Written in a crisp and engaging style, this thought-provoking volume challenges received ideas on India's culture and invites us to think afresh.Printed Pages: 248. 100534

Alone in the wide world, he is kidnapped by pirates and sold at an Egyptian slave market. From Egypt to Ethiopia, his journey is full of adventures, each more incredible than the other. Rock Art in the Old World (IGNCA Rock Art Series-1)
Aryan Books International; New Delhi, India; 2001; 8185503001; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New; 22 x 28 Cm
Indira Gandhi National Centre for the Arts dira-gandhi">Indira Gandhi he Old World is an invaluable documentation of what is probably the first manifestation of the creative urge of man. It consists of selected papers from the World Congress of Rock Art held in Darwin in 1988. For the first time rock art of very broad geographical regions covering the continents of Africa, Asia and Europe have been dealt within one book. Little known traditions such as the panorama of Chinese art and that of the former Soviet Union have been studied. Samples of rock art identified only recently have been described. The papers presented in this volume are convincing proof of the importance of the study of Rock Art, both for Archaeology as also ethnology and lifestyle studies. The vast spectrum shows that although there has been a History of research on Rock Art, as A Young discipline it is exploring various avenues of growth. Several of the papers indicate the extensive research carried out in India. The Indira Gandhi National Centre for the Arts (IGNCA) is a premier institution pursuing Rock Art research in a universal context. One important component of its programme is the establishment of the gallery of primeval sight called Adi Drsya, dedicated to everything that is understood by the word palaeo-art. This unique volume is the first in the IGNCA series of Rock Art Studies. It is meant for wide ranging specialists and students interested in human history and art. Printed Pages: 572. 100226

Bastar Folk Art: Shrines, Figurines and Memorials
Franco Indian Research Pvt. Ltd; Mumbai, India; 1999; 8190018450; First Edition; Hard Cover; New; New; 23 Cms x 29 Cms
The present work documents different aspects of the cultural heritage of the district of Bastar. While the varied lifestyles of the Maria and Muria Gonds, and other groups, have been the focus of considerable anthropological research, relatively little is known of the numerous temples that represent the establishment of the Nagvansi dynasty in the 10th century and subsequently that of the Kakatiya. The ruins of Bhongapal and Garh Gobrahin are estimated to be older and bear testimony to the transitory efflorescence of the Buddhist and Vaisnavite faiths. Their influence on the socio-religious structure of the indigenous population is reflected in the village shrines, highlighting an on-going process of mutual enrichment. In illustrating the most important places of worship, an attempt has been made to explore the intersection of traditions. The subtle interplay of cultural interaction through time renders it difficult to distinguish the 'folk' from the classical, indicating the need to review our concepts of Indian art. God in All Worlds: A Journey to Light
Harpercollins India Publishers Ltd./Prakash Books; New Delhi, India; 9789351775140; Softcover; New;
Born in Johannesburg to a Catholic mother and a Jewish father, Michelle Friedman practises Catholicism until her father divorces her mother and, at fourteen, converts her to Judaism. So begins a spiritual journey leading to Padre Pio, a priest who bears the stigmata, followed by ten years as a Catholic nun. The Soweto riots and a forbidden relationship point the way forward to secular life, but the death of her father and a traumatic event catapult Michelle back to her Jewish roots in Jerusalem. Later, in St. Louis and Seattle, Michelle discovers the harsh secrets of her childhood. Her healing continues, climaxing years later in India, where she reflects on her eventful life and her journeys, both outward and inward. God in All Worlds is the inspirational story of a woman's journey across four continents in her quest for spiritual fulfilment and emotional healing. Michelle steers the reader from shanty towns in South Africa to the Old City in Jerusalem and from the opulent hotels of Kolkata to the simple asceticism of Varanasi. A soul-searching odyssey and a disarmingly honest chronicle, this is a spiritual memoir unlike any other.Printed Pages: 216. 106489

The Last Hero: A Biography of Subhas Bose
Times Group Books; New Delhi, India; 2014; 9789325985674; First Edition; Softcover; New;
History abounds with many heroes. The Indian freedom struggle had its own share of them. Subhas Chandra Bose fired the nation with patriotic fervour, very different in character to the non-violent approach preached by Gandhi. Truly an outsider to the movements of satyagraha and passive resistance that rapidly gained momentum, he made a valiant effort to galvanize the nation into action with evocative slogans such as Freedom is never given, it is taken' . . . 'Tum mujhe khoon do, main tumhe azadi doonga'. JAI HIND India's national greeting ? was the salutation coined by him to arouse nationalistic passion among the Indians. In what was unthinkable then, Bose dared to ally with the Nazis and the Japanese, and raised an indigenous army called Azad Hind Fauj to challenge the military might of the British Empire.Why then has Subhas Chandra Bose been largely marginalized as a footnote in the history of India's independence? Perhaps the mythical legends that continue to shroud both his personal life and political happenstance hold some answers.The Lost Hero a thoroughly researched biography of Subhas Bose delves into the life and times of this great man, with the hope that he is granted a befitting place in the annals of Indian history.Printed Pages: 584. 104979

Bollywood: A History
Lotus/Roli Books; New Delhi, India; 8174366539; Softcover; New;
Hollywood may define our idea of movies, but it is the city of Bombay on the west coast of India that is now the centre of world cinema. Every year, the Indian film industry produces more than 1,000 feature films; every day, 14 million Indians go to a movie in the country; a billion more people a year buy tickets for Indian movies than for Hollywood ones. The rise of Bombay as the film capital of the world has been both remarkable and amazing. Bollywood movies themselves are a self-contained world with their multiple song and dance routines, intense melodrama, and plots that contain everything from farce to tragedy, but always produce a happy ending. The men and women who created these movies are even more remarkable; and it is this fantastic, rich, diverse story, a veritable Indian fairyland, that Mihir Bose, a native of Bombay, tells with vivid brilliance in the first comprehensive history of this major social and cultural phenomenon. Sculptures of Ganga-Yamuna Valley
Abhinav Publications/Kaveri Books; New Delhi, India; 817017189X; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New;
"Stylistically Classical Indian Gupta sculpture admitted a common denominator till the end of the sixth and the beginning of the seventh century A.D. This was felt throughout the sub-continent in different degrees, according to the strength of the regional trends. The gradual thinning down or the decline of the Classical Gupta concept was followed by an emphasis on the regional factors until they dominated over the former. The Ganga-Yamuna Valley, the hub of Indian history and culture since the early times, played an important part in the medieval phase. From the point of view of cultural history, especially in the field of art, middle of the eighth century may be considered as the beginning of the medieval phase of Indian sculpture. 108029

Macroeconomics of Post-reform India
Oxford University Press; New Delhi, India; 2009; 0195697065; First Edition; Hard Cover; New; New; 15 x 23 Cm
This book and its companion volume Money and Finance in the Indian Economy bring together essays written over the last fifteen years by eminent economist Mihir Rakshit. The essays cover practically all major macroeconomic developments in India in the process of transition from a Plan to a market-oriented economy. These essays focus on the overall behaviour of the economy, that is, the genesis of and lessons from the 1990–91 payments crisis that led to the adoption of a comprehensive reforms programme; the different phases of post-reform macroeconomic development and the series of puzzles surfacing therein; the nature and sustainability of services-led growth; and the analytical-cum-policy issues relating to inflation arising from oil price or other shocks. The author provides a survey of the current state of mainstream macroeconomics and discusses its application to the Indian context. He emphasizes the significance of agriculture, infrastructural bottlenecks, absorption of labour in the unorganized sector, and large-scale financial dualism as particularly important in the Indian context. Using such a framework casts new light on the main drivers of the Indian macroeconomy, underlines its major sectoral interlinkages, and helps draw analytical and policy conclusions that are often sharply at variance with the conventional wisdom or widely held beliefs. 024967

Money and Finance in the Indian Economy
Oxford University Press; New Delhi, India; 2009; 0195696980; First Edition; Hard Cover; New; New; 15 x 23 Cm
This book and its companion volume Macroeconomics of Post-reform India bring together essays written over the last fifteen years by eminent economist Mihir Rakshit. The essays cover practically all major macroeconomic developments in India in the process of transition from a Plan to a market-oriented economy. The focus of the essays in this volume is on the problems and policy concerns emerging in particular sectors. The issues discussed relate to the transition from a situation of credit constraint to one of excess liquidity; the source of fiscal imbalances and the measures for their correction; economic and policy implications of FCI’s excess food stocks and the rapid build-up of foreign exchange reserves; the pros and cons of foreign institutional investments (FIIs); and the strengths and weaknesses of the banking system under the liberalized regime. The problems and issues addressed in these essays are diverse, and so is their focus and emphasis. However, the unifying factor is their analysis that draws on a macro-theoretic framework appropriate to the Indian economy. 024970

Water: Growing Understanding, Emerging Perspectives
Orient BlackSwan; New Delhi, India; 2016; 8125062920; Softcover; New;
For decades after independence, Indian planning ignored the need for sustainability and equity in water resource development and management. There was just one way forward, that of harnessing the bounty in our rivers and below the ground, and this strategy had almost completely unquestioned acceptance. It was only in the 1990s that serious questions began to be raised on the wisdom of our understanding and approach to rivers. Around the same time, the sustainability of our strategy of groundwater development under the Green Revolution also began to be interrogated. Printed Pages: 576. 110983

Habitat suitability modeling of boreal biodiversity: Predicting plant species richness and rarity
Bookstore Tiedekirja; Finland; 2011; 9514294521; New;
The work described in this thesis aimed to determine the main environmental variables which predict the variation in plant diversity patterns in boreal landscapes (NE Finland) using existing and readily available environmental data sources and different habitat suitability modeling methods. Species distribution models were built using occurrence records of 28 threatened vascular plant species and 17 ecologically relevant environmental variables based primarily on generalized additive modeling (GAM). The results showed that the meso-scale distribution patterns of rare boreal vascular plants are strongly associated with favorable thermal and moisture conditions as well as with stressful, low temperatures. 114412

Verkostoitu Tieto
Bookstore Tiedekirja; Finland; 2003; 9517464665; New;
Kirjassa arvioidaan kysymystä, mitä informaatioteknologian kehittyminen ja nopeutunut tiedonkulku ovat merkinneet 1800-luvun kaupankäynnille Suomessa. Tutkimus perustuu kauppias Carl Magnus Dahlstömin kirjeenvaihtoon, joka avaa poikkeuksellisen näköalan kansainvälisiin kauppatuttavien verkostoihin, tiedonvälityksen käytäntöihin ja liiketoiminnan arkeen. Tiedonkulun kehittymisen kannalta 1800-luku on erityisen kiinnostava jakso. Teknologiset innovaatiot nopeuttivat kirjeiden välitystä, mutta suurin merkitys oli kuitenkin lennättimellä. Tutkimuksessa kysytään, miten tiedonkulun huima nopeutuminen muutti suomalaiskauppiaiden asemaa globalisoituvassa taloudessa. Printed Pages: 207. 115926

Kauppias, kaupunki, Kruunu: Turun porvariyhteisö ja talouden organisaatio varhaiskeskiajalta 1570-Luvulle
Bookstore Tiedekirja; Finland; 2000; 9517462026; New;
Turku oli keskiajalla Suomen tärkein kaupunki, jonka porvarit harjoittivat säännöllistä ulkomaankauppaa 1200-luvulta alkaen. Turkulaisten kaupalliset yhteydet ulottuivat Pohjanlahden rannikolta Tallinnaan, Danzigiin ja muihin merentakaisiin hansakeskuksiin. Mika Kallioisen tutkimus keskittyy analysoimaan erityisesti porvareiden muodostaman yhteisön merkitystä epävarmuuden vähentämisessä. Päähuomio on raatiorganisaatiossa. Tutkimuksessa tarkastellaan Turun porvariyhteisöä myös sosiaalihistorialliselta kannalta. Printed Pages: 344. 115980

Vähemmistövaltiokirkon Synty
Bookstore Tiedekirja; Finland; 2010; 9525031594; New;
"Me inkerikot, vatjalaiset ja karjalaiset"
Bookstore Tiedekirja; Finland; 2007; 9517469608; New;
Inkerinmaan ortodoksinen väestö jakaantui 1600-luvun lopulla suomensukuista kieltä puhuneisiin inkerikkoihin ja vatjalaisiin sekä venäläisiin. Ruotsin uskonnollisen yhtenäisyyden ihanteen mukaisesti heistä oli tehtävä kuninkaan luterilaisia alamaisia. Tehtävään valittiin Narvan superindententti Johannes Gezelius nuorempi ja Inkerinmaan kenraalikuvernööri Göran Sperling. Heidän suorittamansa käännytysyritykset saivat aikaan ortodoksirahvaassa vastarintaa, jonka kautta voidaan tutkia erilaisten ryhmäidentiteettien rakentumista Inkerinmaan rajaprovinssissa. Chimes of Freedom: Bob Dylan and the 60s
Seagull Books; Kolkata, India; 2005; 81-046-196-0; First Edition; Hard Cover; New; New; 14 Cms x 28.5 Cms
"Dylan has burrowed into our flesh and lodged in our minds . . . his words, images, tunes have been swimming through my head, rising up from the depths at unexpected moments. The electric violin on desolation row. The pill box hat that balances on her head just like a mattress balances on a bottle of wine. Breadcrumb sins . . . the ghost of electricity howling in the bones of her face. The orphan crying like a fire in the sun. Her amaican um and how she did come. The hard rain forever falling. The answer forever blowin’. . ." Chimes of Freedom tells the story of an irascible individual artist in a period of great social upheaval, a mass movement for social change—and the complex, often tortured relationship between the two. Re-establishing Dylan’s sixties’ master works in their historical context, the book sheds new light on both the songs and the era that produced them. Printed Pages: 392. 031330
