Nisargadatta Maharaj is undoubtedly the Ultimate Alchemist and his non-dual teachings, the Ultimate Alchemy.This book is a live satsang with Satguru Sri Nisargadatta Maharaj, covering rare and unpublished conversations with Sri Nisargadatta Maharaj which have been transcribed by his ‘evening’ translator, Mohan Gaitonde, who had the privilege of being with Him from 1979 to 1981. The flavour of these talks is heightened by the fact that Mr Gaitonde, being well-versed with Marathi, the language Maharaj spoke, is able to convey all the subtle nuances of Maharaj’s potent words of wisdom.‘The precious conversations in this book act as a divine catalyst for all those who are eager to leave the banks of miserable seeking and intellectual understanding, and realize the ever-flowing river of Understanding of Who You Are! If you have not yet transcended the shackles of read and heard knowledge, these intuitive utterances of Nisargadatta will surely help restore the Eternal Ease. In talk after talk, He reminds the readers about their forgotten Richness! Welcome to the final leap into Nisargadatta’s quintessential teachings. If you are waiting for Everything but also ready for Nothing, this book is the perfect touchstone.Nothing is Everything is indeed Nisargadatta Maharaj’s ultimate blessing for the ardent seekers. The Unheard Scream: Reproductive Health and Women's Lives in India
Zubaan; New Delhi, India; 8186706704; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New;
The International Conference on Population and Development (ICPD) at Cairo brought about a "paradigm shift" in the way population is conceptualized. This involves going beyond maternal health and family planning, to the broader framework of reproductive health and rights. How has India fared with the paradigm shift? Is this about population control by other means? Is it about the social roots of illness, disease and death among women? This revelatory collection of essays by journalists explores a range of issues - from the Quinacrine sterilization scandal, to the rip-off that is the assisted reproduction industry, to the declining age of marriage among Muslim girls in Malabar. Winners of the Panos Reproductive Health Media Fellowship, these journalists reveal how issues in women's health are deeply imbricated in the lives of Indian women. Connectivity and Integration in South Asia
Kalpaz Publications/Gyan Books Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2015; 9789351281290; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New;
South Asia represents one fourth of world population with low gross domestic product, low per capita and low literacy rate coupled with high birth and high death rates. It contains the largest number of the world's hungry about 350 million people. It is afflicted by a number of problemssocial, political and economic. Further, disparity between the rural and urban, poor and rich and violence (extremism, insurgency) have led to instability and insecurity in the region. No common external threat was perceived by the region. South Asian states are plagued by interstate conflicts over boundaries. Absence of collective identity and lack of sense of belonging do still exist in the region and thus hinder South Asia from achieving the momentum to grow at its full potential. South Asia inherited an integrated transport system from the British, but this was fractured not only by the partition but also by its political aftermath. It needs to be integrated again. Due to lack of integration of the transport system in South Asia, the logistic costs are very high and ranges between thirteen to fourteen per cent of GDP. Connectivity plays a significant role in combating poverty. If countries in South Asia continue growing at a seven per cent rate, the incidence of poverty would be reduced from fifty to twenty per cent. Currently South Asia represents only five per cent of trade. If transport network and infrastructure are improved, trade among the South Asian countries would be enhanced. The contributors in this volume focus on the problems being faced by the South Asian countries and suggest amicable solutions to enhance economic cooperation amongst them. The volume tries to visualize a new South Asia free from conflicts, thereby improving the welfare of the people in the region. Structure of the Volume The volume consists of fifteen papers, which divides into four parts. Part-I: Regionalism in South Asia Part-II: Connectivity and Trade in South Asia Part-III: Cultural Linkages and Soft power in Regional Integration Part-IV: Bilateral Relations.Printed Pages: 298. 106142

Classical Indian Thought and the English Language: Perspectives and Problems
D.K. Printworld (P) Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2015; 812460827X; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New; 15 x 23 Cm
This book is based on the proceedings of a Workshop held in 2011 on Rendering of the Categories of Classical Indian Thought in the English Language: Perspectives and Problems.Although scientific texts appear to have successfully solved the problem by standardizing technical terms for all languages of instruction and communication, the problem of translation becomes acute when dealing with vocabularies of long standing belonging to ancient cultures, as is the case in India.More urgently, we know that the thought worlds of ancient and medieval India are still very much alive and with us. Thus to even begin to understand contemporary India and its dilemmas, it is essential to come to grips with the foundational concerns, wisdom and follies of a civilization that has refused to die. What we find, however, is that when it comes to the understanding of our own thought traditions, their rendering into the English language in the colonial (and post-colonial) period, has only served to obscure the great cultural divide between the history of Western thought and our own.The workshop thus aimed at bringing into focus the problems associated with conveying the central concepts and categories relating to some key areas of Indian classical thought through the well-established lexicons available in English, the language of ‘power’.The multidisciplinary gathering included not only philosophers from the fields of Epistemology, Ontology, Aesthetics, Moral Philosophy, Philosophy of Language, Religion and Logic, but also specialists in the fields of Political Theory, History, and Culture Theory from India and abroad. Tagore and Education for Social Change
Gyan Books Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 1993; 8121204364; Hardcover; New; New;
Education is always an experience serene, vibrant, unending. For social change, it is something more than that. It is an exciting Adventure for the excellence of 'men' in every man.Misunderstood and misinterpreted more often than not. Perhaps because of Poverty of inward evaluation and depth of Vision and more perhaps because of absence of appropriate appreciation to the multi-dimensional personality of an incomparable colossus, Rabindranath Tagore's poignant Thoughts and Experiments on Education for social change await a re-valuation right now. Social awareness, socio-aesthetic and socio-mystic fulfilment side by side with critical and Creative appreciation are some of the iconoclastic and abiding parameters of his theory and practice on education for humanistic and social transcendence. Which mark a significant point of departure from ukasa in the name of education for the hoi polloi.Here is an in-depth Study of Tagore's unparalleled viewpoints and experiments on education for social change.A high time now for redirecting social change in the right perspective, Tagore and Education for Social Change might be a valuable contribution to Tagoreana and social education.Printed Pages: 226. 105773

Reform and Renewal in South Asian Islam: The Chishti-Sabris in 18th–19th Century North India
Oxford University Press; New Delhi, India; 0199469342; Hardcover; New; New;
Of the many Sufi orders that have operated in South Asia, the Chishti order is the oldest and the most popular. This book examines the traditions, rituals, experiences, and legacy of the Sa¯bri branch of the Chishti order. Challenging the notion of Sufism as an ossified relic of the past, it presents evidence of growing interaction, accommodation, and intermingling within Sufi orders. It also highlights the active involvement of the Chishti-Sa¯bris in the much discussed reformist upsurge in north India and explains how they addressed questions posed by colonial rule while still adhering to their mystical heritage.The role of networks that connected Sufi scholars in small towns (qasbahs) with those of Delhi is also examined. These connections, it is argued, moulded the religious ethos of such towns and made them incubators of Sufi reform. By locating Sufi traditions and institutions within the discourse of Islamic scholars (‘ulama¯), the book contends that the boundaries often drawn between ‘Sufi’ and ‘scholarly’ Islam were in reality far more blurred and porous than is admitted in the literature on modern reformist movements. The Intelligence of Tradition in Rajput Court Painting
Yale University Press; London; 0300142293; Hardcover; New; New; 22 x 29 Cm
The genre of Rajput painting flourished between the 16th and 19th centuries in the kingdoms that ruled what is now the Indian state of Rajasthan (place of rajas). Rajput paintings depicted the nobility and court spectacle as well as scenes from Krishna’s life, the Hindu epics, and court poetry. Many Rajput kingdoms developed distinct styles, though they shared common conventions. This important book surveys the overall tradition of Indian Rajput painting, while developing new methods to ask unprecedented questions about meaning.Through a series of in-depth studies, Aitken shows how traditional formal devices served as vital components of narrative meaning, expressions of social unity, and rich sources of intellectual play. Supported by beautiful full-color illustrations of rare and often inaccessible paintings, Aitken’s study spans five centuries, providing a comprehensive and innovative look at the Rajasthan’s court painting traditions and their continued relevance to contemporary art. A Magic World: New Visions of Indian Painting
The Marg Foundation; New Delhi, India; 2016; 9789383243150; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New; 25 x 32 Cm
In the 100 years since Ananda Coomaraswamy wrote his seminal Rajput Painting, the field of Indian painting studies has gone from a period of explosive discovery to a deepening of knowledge about individual artists and workshops. More recently, scholars have also begun to probe artists’ and patrons’ creative decisions and have entered into extensive conversation with South Asian cultural studies in general. They reconsider Coomaraswamy’s distinction between “Rajput”and Mughal painting and focus more on the connections between these two worlds, analyzing the complex meanings these paintings might have held for their artists, patrons and viewers. This celebratory volume probes the cultural preoccupations of 16th- to early 20th-century Rajput, Mughal and Deccan India, and provides delightful new insights into the magic world of Indian painting. Molly Emma Aitken is Associate Professor in the Art Department at the City College of New York and the Art History Department at the CUNY Graduate Center. She has published extensively on Mughal and Rajput painting. Printed Pages: 129 with numerous colour illustrations. 111499

Chanted Narratives: The Living 'Katha-Vachana' Tradition
Indira Gandhi National Centre for the Arts/D.K. Printworld (P) Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2001; 8124601828; Hardcover; New; New;
Every region/community of the world has its share of oral creativity, in varying measures though, and, accordingly, has its own legacy of "chanted narratives": epical, historical, mythical, romantic or even ritualistic. Such narratives have long survived in the collective memory of its people, having been handed down from generation to generation. Confronted, however, by the "cornucopian techno-centrism" of today's life, these oral narratives are on their way out everywhere - like many other vibrant cultural phenomena.Highlighting why we need to preserve this intangible heritage of mankind, the volume offers a fascinating study of "chanted narratives" from different regions of India and parts of Southeast Asia. Essentially a multi-author work, it explores the nature of orality and its various attendant aspects like composition, performance, transmission modes, socio-economic context, and the relationship that exists between its performer and the audience. Also addressing methodological issues concerning the existing definitions and terminologies, the authors argue for a paradigm shift in the academic discourse on orality and oral cultures.Carrying twenty-four contributions of leading scholars from France, Germany, India, Indonesia, Italy, Nepal, New Zealand, Sri Lanka and UK, the book not only provides theoretical insights into the complex nature of orality, but sets out a rich repertoire of chanted narratives as well.Printed Pages: 297. 101684
