Librarianship and Library Science in India: An Outline of Historical Perspectives
Concept Publishing Company Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 1994; 8170225248; Hardcover; New; New;
Students of history in general and the library world in particular have recognized a continuous need to study Indian librarianship and library science. The few attempts to satisfy this need have limited coverage; there remains no single source that comprehensively covers the topics comprehensive, that is, in the sense that it treats all developments of theory and practice throughout the ages. The present work spans the historical periods from ancient through medieval and modern India, thus covering the development in the field comprehensively. This brief, but complete history, is based on primary and secondary sources available in English and other languages. Although this work will fill a great void in the world history of librarianship and library science, it too is only a beginning. As an outline, it serves as a kind of synthesis and bibliographic essay that ties together the long story of libraries in India and points the reader to the existing literature. Students of library science in South Asia and elsewhere will benefit the most from this effort. However, as a contribution to the study of international and comparative librarianship, the work should initiate and facilitate in-depth research in areas which are identified as understudied and in areas which are still unexplored. A Feminist Foremother: Critical Essays on Rokeya Sakhawat Hossain
Orient BlackSwan; New Delhi, India; 2017; 9789386296009; Hardcover; New; New;
This volume looks at the life and works of Rokeya Sakhawat Hossain (1880–1932), arguably Bengal’s earliest and boldest feminist, revered as a crusader for the emancipation and advancement of women, in particular Bengali Muslim women. Through her spirited writings and her activism, Rokeya challenged the two pillars of patriarchy – hierarchical family structures and religious dogma. She demanded that the ‘family’ be restructured on the basis of gender equality. A devout Muslim, she asked that women be recognised as human beings in their own right within practices of Islam.Born into an orthodox Muslim family, for Rokeya, the most vital way in which women could empower themselves was through education. The Sakhawat Memorial Girls’ School in Kolkata, started by Rokeya in 1911, still stands as an enduring testament to that belief.This collection of biographical and critical essays places Rokeya within the socio-cultural and historical context of her times to better appreciate her literary and social contributions in the face of the formidable challenges she faced as a Bengali Muslim woman. The essays also aim to understand why the extraordinary vision she had, not just for women but for an ideal, more gender-just society, continues to be as radical, powerful and relevant today, almost a century after her death.This volume will be a valuable asset to students and scholars of women’s and gender studies, as also of South Asian literature and culture. Studies in Medieval Indian Polity and Culture: The Delhi Sultanate and Its Times
Oxford University Press; New Delhi, India; 0198069944; Hardcover; New; New; 15 x 23 Cm
Mohammad Habib (1895–1971) was one of the foremost historians of medieval India. This volume presents a representative collection of his works, which in their time brought many innovative ideas to the study of the Delhi Sultanate. He examines not just the emperors—their campaigns, strategies, and political ideas—but also the conditions of peasants, artisans, weavers, and the mass of people of the Indian subcontinent during the eleventh to the fifteenth centuries. The essays span the political history of the Sultanate period, including an evaluation of Mahmud Ghaznin’s campaigns, Ziya Barani’s description of the politico-economic and social contexts, study of Sufi records, and other contemporary sources. While presenting insights about every aspect of medieval Indian life, the historian and his thoughts themselves emerge as a subject for the study of national historiography and, later, the beginnings of Marxist historical analyses. Habib calls upon historians to reject the ‘bourgeois’ approach and focus instead on the history of the oppressed. Irfan Habib’s insightful introduction situates Mohammad Habib’s writings in the context not only of the development of Indian historiography, but also of the influences of the environment of his own time. Afghanistan in World Politics: A Study of Afghan-U.S. Relations
Gyan Books Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 1987; 8121200970; Hardcover; New; New;
Afghanistan a landlocked developing country, is geographically contiguous to Soviet Union, but a distant Country to the United States. The analysis of Relationship between a small developing country like Afghanistan and a geographically distant Super Power like the United States, presents a unique Study in many respects.The analysis of Afghan-US Relations has almost remained a neglected area of serious Academic research. The plethora of literature available on Afghanistan has not even provided a cursory treatment to this most crucial and significant aspect.A cursory analysis of the available literature leaves many questions unanswered. Can a small country like Afghanistan be usurped by a Super Power? How the small and weak Nations can survive? Will the inaction by the non-aligned Movement (NAM) and the United Nations in getting the Russian aggression vacated from Afghanistan, further encourage the Russians to annex other non-aligned countries? Can United States, as a Super Power, Help in restoration of the non-aligned status of Afghanistan safeguard its territorial integrity and sovereignty etc.The author has made an humble endeavour to probe all the aspects in detail in the present book. It is not only an attempt at providing answers to various fundamental questions arising in the aftermath of Russian invasion of Afghanistan but also provides a detailed background of Afghanistan's Relations with the United States. The book is divided into six main chapters. The first chapter provides an indepth analysis of the major factors which have been the hallmark of Afghanistan's foreign policy. The evolution of Afghan-US relations until the Second World War is analyzed in the second chapter. Afghanistan's vigorous pursuit of the Policy of neutrality in the wake of Cold war which immediately succeeded the end of the Second World War and Afghan US relations in the post-war period are critically examined in the third chapter. Economic relation in the form of trade, Aid and Technical assistance between Afghanistan and the United States have been analyzed in the fifth chapter. The concluding part of the book makes a dispassionate Review of the policy of the United States towards Russian invasion of Afghanistan and suggests the potential policy Measures for the United States in cooperation with other Countries especially the non-aligned community to help resolve the Afghan Tangle.Printed Pages: 176. 105659

Mystries and Glimpses of Kashmir
Raj Publications; New Delhi, India; 1996; 8186208038; Softcover; New;
The Book throws light on different facets of Kashmir history. Prof. Yasin's contention that Jesus Christ's last remains lie buried in Khaniyar, Srinagar, is not to rake up any religious controversy, but his approach is purely historical. It is not a new discovery, but what has been already said by Mirza Ghulam Ahmad of Qadian and others, has been analysed critically in historical apparatus without any religious bias.Similarly his surmise that Kongvatan in Kashmir is Kundalvana, the venue of the 4th Buddhist Council, was the result of physical varification of the location given by Hieun Tsang. The other papers explain 'the riddle of the cultural synthesis and essential unity and oneness of the people of Jammu and Kashmir.'Madhavi Yasin's papers are important from the point of view of sources, socio-cultural and political history. They would be useful alike to research scholars and general readers. She has focussed attention on the position and status of women, and their gradual but steady march towards emancipation. She has highlighted the fact that in the Ladakh division of Jammu and Kashmir, the women are more liberated than their counterparts.Printed Pages: 267. 106330

October Coup: A Memoir of the Struggle for Hyderabad
Lotus/Roli Books; New Delhi, India; 8174364730; Softcover; New;
It is 1948. A newly-independent India is trying to persuade Hyderabad to join the Indian Union. Negotiations are difficult for both sides. The State Congress, now operating from Indian territory, has launched a campaign of violent raids, designed to cripple civil administration in the border areas, and provoke an annexation. The leading Islamic party inside Hyderabad, in an equally rash move, has created a para-military body, the Razakars, to counter the threat to Hyderabad’s borders.For Mohammed Hyder of the Hyderabad Civil Service, the newly-appointed Collector of Osmanabad District (situated on the Hyderabad-Bombay border), both, the wayward State Congress and the ramshackle Razakar outfit are a threat to law and order. This first-person account conveys a vivid picture of Hyderabad under pressure, through the eyes of a senior district administrator. Printed Pages: 238. 108555

R. K. Narayan: An Introduction (Contemporary Indian Writers in English)
Cambridge University Press; New Delhi, India; 2013; 9789382993537; Softcover; New;
Contemporary Indian Writers in English (CIWE) is a series that presents critical commentaries on some of the best-known names in the genre. With the high visibility of Indian writing in English in academic, critical, pedagogic and reader circles, there is a perceivable demand for lucid yet rigorous introductions to several of its authors and genres. The CIWE texts cater to a wide audience – from the student seeking information and critical material on particular works to the general, informed reader who might want to know a little more about an author s/he has just finished reading. Cast in a user-friendly format and written with a high degree of critical and theoretical rigour, the texts in the series will provide astute, accessible, informed entry-points into a wide range of works and writers. CIWE, we hope, will further strengthen the interest in and readership of one of the most significant components of world literatures in English. A pioneer in Indian writings in English, R. K. Narayan’s breadth of work, based on the fictitious world of the tiny Malgudi town, offers both the academic-scholar and the general reader a variety of ideas about and insights into a small town’s many lives. Narayan’s novels, short fiction, non-fiction and travelogues hover around sweet shop owners, schoolchildren, teachers, family planning propagandists, ghosts, criminals-turned-savants and housewives – the deceptive simplicity of his prose style offering a ‘microcosm’ of the Indian society, with its caste, class and gender complication. All of these essential aspects of Narayan’s work come in for sustained attention in this eminently readable introduction by Mohan G. Ramanan. The Unheard Scream: Reproductive Health and Women's Lives in India
Zubaan; New Delhi, India; 8186706704; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New;
The International Conference on Population and Development (ICPD) at Cairo brought about a "paradigm shift" in the way population is conceptualized. This involves going beyond maternal health and family planning, to the broader framework of reproductive health and rights. How has India fared with the paradigm shift? Is this about population control by other means? Is it about the social roots of illness, disease and death among women? This revelatory collection of essays by journalists explores a range of issues - from the Quinacrine sterilization scandal, to the rip-off that is the assisted reproduction industry, to the declining age of marriage among Muslim girls in Malabar. Winners of the Panos Reproductive Health Media Fellowship, these journalists reveal how issues in women's health are deeply imbricated in the lives of Indian women. Connectivity and Integration in South Asia
Kalpaz Publications/Gyan Books Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2015; 9789351281290; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New;
South Asia represents one fourth of world population with low gross domestic product, low per capita and low literacy rate coupled with high birth and high death rates. It contains the largest number of the world's hungry about 350 million people. It is afflicted by a number of problemssocial, political and economic. Further, disparity between the rural and urban, poor and rich and violence (extremism, insurgency) have led to instability and insecurity in the region. No common external threat was perceived by the region. South Asian states are plagued by interstate conflicts over boundaries. Absence of collective identity and lack of sense of belonging do still exist in the region and thus hinder South Asia from achieving the momentum to grow at its full potential. South Asia inherited an integrated transport system from the British, but this was fractured not only by the partition but also by its political aftermath. It needs to be integrated again. Due to lack of integration of the transport system in South Asia, the logistic costs are very high and ranges between thirteen to fourteen per cent of GDP. Connectivity plays a significant role in combating poverty. If countries in South Asia continue growing at a seven per cent rate, the incidence of poverty would be reduced from fifty to twenty per cent. Currently South Asia represents only five per cent of trade. If transport network and infrastructure are improved, trade among the South Asian countries would be enhanced. The contributors in this volume focus on the problems being faced by the South Asian countries and suggest amicable solutions to enhance economic cooperation amongst them. The volume tries to visualize a new South Asia free from conflicts, thereby improving the welfare of the people in the region. Structure of the Volume The volume consists of fifteen papers, which divides into four parts. Part-I: Regionalism in South Asia Part-II: Connectivity and Trade in South Asia Part-III: Cultural Linkages and Soft power in Regional Integration Part-IV: Bilateral Relations.Printed Pages: 298. 106142
