Madras Then Chennai Now
Lustre Press/Roli Books; New Delhi, India; 2013; 8174369147; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New;
Madras Then is an extensively researched collection of pictures showcasing the city as it once was. From images documenting the construction of the artificial Madras harbour to the fateful day when the German cruiser Emden attacked Chennai (making it the only Indian city to have sustained a direct attack during the Great War). The beginnings of modern Madras culture have been well documented with alluring pictures of some of Indias earliest businessmen, industrialists, parliamentarians, actors and actors turned politicians. This book features images sourced from the private archives of the citys prominent families with some of them being published for the first time. Be it politics, sport, movies, education or even the independence struggle, Madras then features pictures and paintings of almost every event and sociocultural phenomenon that has left an indelible mark on Indian history. Awarded the title of the best metro by a magazine survey conducted in 2013, Chennai is a city of dichotomies home to some of Indias glitziest malls and retail chains and yet a city where the streets still come alive with kolam drawing competitions. The proud base of some of the countrys premier software companies but where the highly educated techie employees still enter office with vibhuti on their foreheads. A place often written off as being conservative but located in the region that hosts the largest festival of transgenders in the country. Chennai Now perfectly captures the many ironies of Chennai, featuring aerial photographs (unpublished thus far) of the city that document its changing skyline. A fascinating insight into India's most livable city. Printed Pages: 240. 037721

Dreams: As Foreshadows of the Future, Mirrored in Fantasies of the Present, and Fixations of the Past
D.K. Printworld (P) Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2009; 8124604908; First Edition; Softcover; New; 15 x 22 Cm
This book is a study of the mysterious phenomenon of dreams. Dreams have fascinated mankind for ages. Civilisations over time and varied cultures have attempted to interpret the occurrence and meaning of dreams in different ways. Various theories have been extended from time to time to interpret this phenomenon. Dreams are generally viewed as displays of the subconscious and the unconscious which know everything of the past, the present and the future and constitute an interrelation between these. The book analyses the states of thought, the sleep cycle and occurrence of dreams, presenting viewpoints of various religious and cultural traditions like the tantric view, that of the Guiana Indians, the Korean tradition, and so on. It discusses the views of scientists and psychologists on dreams, examining the beliefs of each school -- the Freud school, Jung school, Hall school among others -- in detail. It classifies dreams in different ways and deals with aspects of contemplation, emotions, and feelings in dreams. It also takes up dream healing and numerology, explaining how one can understand the structure of a dream and its significance and use it for achieving something in life. It contains accounts of dreams experienced by famous personalities in history which were closely linked to their real lives.Printed Pages: 224. 100463

Soul-Psychic Sleuthing: Techniques of Telepathy, Clairvoyance and Psychometry
D.K. Printworld (P) Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2013; 8124606501; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New; 15 x 23 Cm
Soul-psychic Sleuthing will help us bring peace, harmony and welfare of society we live in. When it will be applied extensively, it will minimize troubles and traumas, corruption, and terrorism in the so-called civilized societies. The Hindu scriptures talked of atma-manthan (soul-churning) because it is only atma, i.e. soul which being one with the Universal Consciousness, knows the truth, which in turn can reach the best solution. Truth shall win. This enforces the application of the Soul-psychic Sleuthing. There are many techniques of the soul-psychic sleuthing. However, this book concentrates only on three of these — telepathy, clairvoyance, and psychometry. Based on Taoist and Confucius wisdom texts, and the views of the modern psychologists, this study provides in detail the methods to develop these talents. Presenting the sleuthing practised by seers and mystics, psychic readers and trackers, telepathists, consultants in their areas and others, it delves into each of the three techniques in-depth. The soul-psychic sleuthing needs reason, courage, majesty, morals, ethics, values and a tranquil mind besides the absolute purity of thought and intention.Printed Pages: 303. 100465

Understanding Occult Sciences: Focussing on Astrology, Numerology, Palmistry, Physiognomy, Phrenology, Moleosophy and Graphology
D.K. Printworld (P) Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2008; 8124602581; Softcover; New; 15 x 23 Cm
The book attempts to examine those occult sciences that deal with the birth- and name-related attributes of human beings, their bodily features and their style of writing for deeper insights into personality and fate -- topics like astrology, numerology, palmistry, physiognomy, phrenology, moleosophy and graphology. In a simple language and with easy-to-understand examples and illustrations, Dr Nandlal Vanvari reveals the way in which these sciences explain aspects of human character and mind by going beyond the environmental conditioning of man and his trait of reducing everything to automatic reflex. Keeping the modern scientific perspective in mind throughout, he delves into horoscopes and effects of the planets and constellations, the significance of numbers in numerology and their association with planets, the palm lines, significance of moles located in different parts of the body and so on. The work will be useful for those associated with the sciences of the mind as well as general readers interested in occult sciences.Printed Pages: 336. 100467

Kautilya or An Exposition of his Social Ideal and Political Theory
Low Price Publications/D.K. Publishers Distributors Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2005; 817536386X; Hardcover; New; New;
Next to the heroes of the Epics or the Puraana, no name is more familiar to Indians than that of Chaanakya or, as he is otherwise known, Kautilya or Vishnu-gupta. Throughout the whole of India, nÏtis or wise sayings attributed to him, are even now taught to beginners. This nÏti literature is not confined to India, but has travelled to distant countries like Ceylon, Burma Tibet, Siam, and even to Persia and Arabia, and has found place in the literatures of those countries.The very fact that this almost universal adoration is paid to his memory, shows that Kautilya was in his own days regarded as a master, whose worldly wisdom and foresight gained for him the veneration of his contemporaries. Their reverence was transmitted from one generation to another, and his real history having been forgotten, tradition surrounded his name with a halo of intellectual glow that marked him out for the spontaneous veneration of posterity, not only in his own country but in the world outside.No authentic history of this remarkable man has reached us, except references to his success in diplomacy or proficiency in the Art of Government, of which he was a redoubtable exponent in the remote past. Of this, again, we have no clear details, and even when such are obtainable, they clearly transport him from the region of history proper and make him the hero of a cycle of semi-mythical legends, of which we shall give some account later on. Darsanamala: Sri Narayana Guru Viracita
D.K. Printworld (P) Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 1998; 8124601097; First Edition; Softcover; New; 15 x 23 Cm
Narayana Guru was a rishi as well as a sutrakara (the author of a sutra text) of the Age of Science. Of his Sanskrit works, the Darshanamala stands out as prominent. This work of one hundred verses considers the ultimate, non-dual Reality from ten different philosophical angles, where each angle is revealed in a chapter comprised of ten verses. Each such vision (darshana) is unique, while the non-dual vision running through each remains the same. As such, all visions can be visualized as forming a single garland (mala) united by a common string. The present commentary in Sanskrit by Professor M.H. Shastri is a free rendering of a Malayalam commentary on the Darshanamala, which was the first of its kind, and was written by Swami Vidyananda. Swami Vidyananda was a direct disciple of Narayana Guru and it was he who took down the Guru's dictation which would come to form the original poem.Printed Pages: 112. 100485

This book unveils the secret world of Indian classical theatre?the fundamental principles of sublime grace, stage presence, and effective communication of emotions. It analyzes the techniques of Centripetal Effect, Centre Point, and the Introspective Illusion that influence the presentation of plays. It also analyzes the secret of grace. Bharata Muni has given an unbelievably detailed study of the facial muscles and head movements. He orders What to do but not Why? The first chapter gives the rationale behind every sloka dealing with this. The second chapter (Acting with the Face) and the third chapter (Acting with the Body)?both analyze the logic of using various parts of the body to create bhava. This book is unique since it studies the unrevealed secret of dramaturgy; no other work has ever attempted such a logical study of grace and bhava. Printed Pages: 207. 037328

A Fighting Spirit: Selected Writings of Ashoka Gupta
Niyogi Books; New Delhi, India; 2012; 9789381523650; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New; 16 x 24 Cm
An active career spanning seven decades is unusual. And to describe Ashoka Gupta (1912-2008) simply as a social worker is not enough. Till the last day of her life, she was a dynamo, who generated exhilaration and energy in those around her. In this volume, we have tried to capture her personality through her own writings and through the recollections of others. The earliest piece by her was published in 1945, the last written in 2004. They vividly convey the ethos of the timesthe terrible 1940s, through war, famine, riots, and Partitionsituations when actions spoke more strongly than words. The tragedy of Partition was overtaken by the excitement and anticipation of nation-building. For Ashoka Gupta the ideals of the Indian constitution were realistic, and needed to be strengthened by ceaseless hands-on work at the grassroots. Twenty years later, she stood by her husband to battle the injustices done to the refugees from East Pakistan who had migrated in the 1960s and were being rehabilitated in the wilderness called Dandakaranya. This book will be of value to scholars of history, sociology and womens studies, for those working on Mahatma Gandhi, on communitarian relations, on legislation pertaining to women, and on institutional frameworks, particularly the All-India Womens Conference.Printed Pages: 192. 037353

Hunger and Other Stories
Hind Pocket Books; New Delhi, India; 812161371X; Softcover; New;
These thirteen short stories by Narendra Kohli, one of the most prominent and best selling Hindi writers of modern times, coruscate with brilliance. These short stories have been written between 1965 and 1972 when the nascent Indian economy was grappling with basic concerns like providing a decent standard of living to the burgeoning large middle class, among others. Globalisation and technology have changed the way most of India lives. However, these short stories have a timeless appeal. They could have been written anytime, anywhere.Hunger, addiction, love, frustration, old age, withered youth, the agony of personal loss in times of war, a mind besieged with thoughts before an impending commitment...these are basic human subjects. Kohli strikes an instant chord with his effortless narrative that comes straight to the heart of the story.Kohli’s explorations into the inner world packs his work with remarkable depth. He easily gets the reader engrossed in simple prose that stands out for its depth of understanding of timeless human predicaments and emotions.Narendra Kohli is widely acclaimed as the most prominent Hindi language author of modern times. His contribution to Hindi literature is often compared to the legendary writer Premchand, though critics believe his impact to be more significant and long-lasting than the latter. Kohli is the unprecedented master of exploring human relationships. His portrayal of highly complex characters covers a wide range — from householders to mental wrecks. His works also assert the timeless nature of the human mind and behaviour. In the world of literature, he occupies the same place as Leo Tolstoy. 109931

The present work of the veteran Indologist Dr. N.N. Bhattacharyya is intended to acquaint the young researchers, teachers and students with the main trends of the studies and researches on different aspects of Indian Buddhism and also with the problems and intricacies involved therein. The results of researches covering a period of no less than 150 years (1825-1975) have been so outlined as to convey to the readers a complete and coherent idea of what has been done and what remains to be done in different branches of Buddhalogical studies. The special merit of this work lies not in the vast bibliographical materials collected in it, but in the author's consistent and lucid interpretation of the views of eminent Buddhalogists and different schools of Buddhist studies on vital questions connected with the understanding of the subject. Origin of Brahmi Script: The Beginning of Alphabet in India (Art, Architecture Painting Grantha)
Chowkhamba Sanskrit Series Office; Varanasi, India; 1980; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New;
Earliest written records of India in the historical period, Asokan inscriptions hold the key to the story of writing in this country. These epigraphs have been written in Greek, Aramaic, Kharosthi, and Brahmi. Among these the Origins of the first three scripts are not disputed but the beginnings of Brahmi elude the grasp of historians. Majority of western scholars derive Brahmi's origin from one of these scripts-Hieratic, cuneiform, Phoenician, Aramaic and Kharosthi. A Few foreign scholars and most of the Indian scholars believe in its indigenous origin. The author of the present work has critically reviewed and scrutinised the existing views and shown convincingly a correlation between the pre-existing geometrical forms and later signs of the Brahmi script. He has illustrated with charts that most of the letters of Brahmi alphabet betray very close resemblance with geometrical forms such as semi-circle, circle, ellipse, cycloid, triangle, angle and quadrangle etc. Each letter of the Brahmi Script has been discussed here in greater detail than ever before and its origin from geometrical signs clearly demonstrated. Besides, The Author has brought out for the first time numerous new forms of Asokan letters originating from geometrical signs, which were hitherto unknown or unnoticed. The work on the whole is marked out for originality, clarity, sound scholarship and critical acumen of the author. The Book is bound to benefit the general readers as well as researchers in the field. Printed Pages: 198. 100816

Paintings of Bundelkhand: Some Remembered, Some Forgotten, Some not yet Discovered
D.K. Printworld (P) Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2016; 8124608458; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New; 23 x 31 Cm
This volume, a visual journey, through its meticulous deliberations on the wall paintings and miniature paintings of Bundelkhand makes us reminisce the footfalls of valiant Bundella kings, ankle bells of elegant court-dancers, evocative poetry of mahakavi Kesvadas and the brilliant artistic skills of mural painters and many other historical events. These find their excellent expressions beyond the palaces of Orchha and Datia, and in many jagirs and thikanas such as Rehali, Madanpur, Chhatarpur, Narsinghgarh, Ajayagarh, Todi Fatehpur, Samthar, Jhansi and Rannod as well. A glimpse of Malwa painting is a value-add.The murals, a living art, more democratic and decidedly popular, were the artistic idiom of Bundelkhand. It was art for the raja and the praja, depicting not only Puranic stories, but also the regal affairs and the day-to-day life of ordinary people.Despite the fact that time, the vicissitudes of weather and vandalism have taken their toll on the murals, a cultivated aesthete can restore life in them. The book candidly reminds us a truth: The paintings of Bundelkhand are half remembered, half forgotten and many yet to be discovered.Thus, this book should inspire art connoisseurs, art historians, art students, and laymen alike, paving the way for further researches and studies on the forgotten legacies of Bundelkhand. Climate Change and Treats to Human Security
Kalpaz Publications/Gyan Books Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2014; 9789351280156; Hardcover; New; New;
The Westphalian paradigm of state as a hard shelled political and territorial boundary to impregnate all those who have been walled in as citizens with an impenetrable security shield is no longer impervious and insensitive to the volley of threats hurled at them by the emerging non-traditional and non-state sources. One of such sources of threats remaining menacing to the people is the climate change with its apocalyptic consequences not centuries ago foreseen or predictably crafted within the contours of state security and its associated military establishment. The utter inadequacy and increasing irrelevance of weapons however lethal and sophisticated may be, in the face of climate change has challenged the narrow, reductionist, linear and one directional state centric security but also has laid the building block for redefining security that moves beyond the state down to the level of every single individual that can be comprehensively christened as human security. Yet one could argue with equal plausibility that the wrong end of a smokestack can be as much of a security threat to humans as the barrel of a gun. This book compiled of a sheaf of articles written from various perspectives mostly focuses on the threats the climate change poses to human security.Printed Pages: 336. 106198
