Wit and Wisdom: Pickings from the Parsee Punch
Niyogi Books; New Delhi, India; 8192091260; Hardcover; New; New;
The Parsee Punch made its mark as the only illustrated comic weekly paper in the Bombay Presidency. It was published in July 1854 at the Apyakhtiar Press by Dadabhai Soheri from 12 Elphinstone Circle, Fort, Bombay. Parsee Punch appeared in four sheets, demy quarto, with English and Gujarati letter-press below the illustrations. Soon, a monthly selection of the cartoon, cuts and sketches appeared as the ‘Pickings.’ Like the London Punch, it contained 24 to 36 pages full of humorous illustrations. Four years later, it changed its name to Hindi Punch to broaden its base. It continued to be published until the 1930s.The Parsee Punch highlighted the relationship between public culture and colonialism. The cartoons they published illustrate, in a lighter vein, contemporary anxieties and predicaments in a witty satirical fashion. Wit and Wisdom: Pickings from the Parsee Punch presents a selection from the publication.Printed Pages: 164 with 162 b/w illustrations. 106582

Sarojini Naidu: Her Way With Words
Niyogi Books; New Delhi, India; 9789381523438; Hardcover; New; New;
In modern day slang, you could say Sarojini Naidu had the gift of gab. In the tumultuous years that she worked closely with Gopal Krishna Gokhale, Muhammad Ali Jinnah, Mahatma Gandhi and Jawaharlal Nehru (roughly from 1914-49) they called her “India’s Nightingale”. In this work, Prof Hasan takes a fresh look at Naidu by collating essays by PK Ghosh, Bina Roy and VV John, on her life as an orator and freedom fighter and a poet. The book also includes her essay on Gokhale and a selection of her poems introduced by the late British poet, critic and literary magazine editor, Arthur Symons.Printed Pages: 160 with 49 b/w photographs. 106519

Knowledge, Power and Politics: Educational Institutions in India
Lotus/Roli Books; New Delhi, India; 8174360484; Hardcover; New; New;
This volume brings together, perhaps for the first time with such scholarly rigour, twelve studies of some premier educational institutions in India. These are: Gurukuls in southeast Punjab; St. Stephen's College; Delhi (Zakir Husain) College; Indraprastha College; Jamia Millia Islamia; Aligarh Muslim University; Nadwat al-Ulama, Lucknow; Patna College; Santiniketan; Presidency College, Calcutta; Elphinstone College; and Christian Medical College, Vellore. What was the vision that inspired, say, Syed Ahmad Khan and Rabindranath Tagore, to conceive of an educational centre? What meanings did they and the generations thereafter attach to Western learning? Again, how did gurukuls in Haryana and the Presidency College and the Jamia Millia Islamia, all located in the same city, respond to nationalist activities? What has been the impact of the changes that have taken place after Independence? Finally, are there some lessons to be drawn from the experiences and performance of our educational institutions? Each essay maps the beginning and the subsequent growth of an educational centre, embedded in the changing ethno-cultural and socio-political matrix from colonial to postcolonial times. Islam Pluralism Nationhood: Legacy of Maulana Azad
Niyogi Books; New Delhi, India; 2014; 9789383098194; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New;
Maulana Abul Kalam Azad, commonly remembered as Maulana Azad, rose to prominence through his work as a journalist, publishing works critical of the British Raj in the early 1920s. A powerful writer and an equally timulating orator, his sway over the Muslim communities was considered a threat by the government which looked for every opportunity to clip his wings and restrain his activities. But Azad took these tribulations gracefully and came to play a very decisive role as a senior leader of the Independence movement. Like his pen-name Azad, which meant free, here was a man who relentlessly strove to remove the shackles of incapacious thinking, challenging its rigidity, wisely integrating the munificence of Islam and pluralism into the folds of nationhood. In an unconventional form of storytelling this book seeks to provide the thrill and opportunity of being a historian and an explorer, to each reader. A compilation of confidential facsimiles of notes, memos and letters, rich and varied, they unfold Azads story like never before. The detailed history sheets compiled by the Intelligence Bureau, are as informative as entertaining, conveying the tentativeness at the heart of an anxious and apprehensive government. The other documents reflect government policies in relation to the popular upsurge that had taken place in some parts of the country, an agitation that also drew Azad into the nationalist fold. Post- Independence communications on policies that were gradually shaping the young independent India also shed ample light on Azads robust conviction of combining the essence of Islam and pluralism in building a new nation. The Crisis of Empire in Mughal North India: Awadh and Punjab (1707 - 1748) 2nd Edition
Oxford University Press; New Delhi, India; 0198077416; Second Edition; Paperback; New;
The period following the death of Aurangzeb has been viewed as the beginning of the decline and decay of the Mughal empire. Examining two contrasting regions of north India-Awadh and Punjab-this pioneering work shows how the period 1707-48 saw the emergence of a new order with local and regional idioms. Muzaffar Alam focuses on the interplay of imperial collapse with regional restructuring. He contends that even as the empire declined, there emerged a new, regionally-based political order, maintained and controlled by former Mughal rulers. From agrarian uprisings to the jagirdari system, the Sikhs to the Zamindars, this book presents a bold new interpretation of an important transition in this period. This edition comes with a new introduction. This book is an important reading for students, scholars, and teachers of Mughal history and early modern India. India at the Polls, 1980: A Study of the Parliamentary Elections
Munshiram Manoharlal Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 1984; 8121501245; First Edition; Hard Cover; New; New; 15 Cms x 23 Cms
India at the Polls, 1980: A study of the Parliamentary Elections, by Myron Weiner, analyses Indira Gandhi's return to power only three years after the voters' overwhelming rejection of her emergency regime. The victor in 1977 had been the Janata party, an all-embracing opposition coalition that had come into being to resist the government's authoritarian measures. Once in office, Janata began to fall apart; power struggles sapped its strength, and it suffered a fatal split. Mrs. Gandhi, meanwhile, made her way back to Parliament and rebuilt her base in the Congress party against the day the government would fall. From his study of the election returns, Weiner concludes that 1980 was a reinstating election: essentially the same coalition of social classes, castes, tribes, and religious groups that had given the Congress party its victories before 1977 returned it in office in 1980. Myron Weiner is Ford Professor of Political Science and a senior staff member of the Center for International Studies at the Massachusetts Institute. Among his books are India at the Polls: The Parliamentary Elections of 1977, Sons of the Soil: Migration and Ethic Conflict in India, and, with Mary Fainsod Katzenstein, India's Preferential Policies: Migrants, the Middle Classes, and the Ethnic Equality. Born Unfree: Child Labour, Education, and the State in India
Oxford University Press; New Delhi, India; 2006; 0195679903; First Edition; Hard Cover; New; New;
It has been twenty years since the Indian Parliament passed the Child Labour (Prohibition and Regulation) Act, 1986. Yet more children work as labourers in India than in any other country in the world. This Omnibus brings together three significant works on child labour focusing on the key factors which create an exploitative relationship between the economy and the children of the poor and the marginalized. In an Introduction written especially for this Omnibus, Neera Burra points out that there are definitional issues around the very concept of child labour and suggests that insights from feminist economics can help illuminate them; only then can we form an accurate picture of the role of child labour in the economy. In addition, she examines the strategy of different groups who have successfully worked against child labour. She argues that child labour can only be reduced when civil society and the state work together to get children out of work and into school. In The Child and the State, Myron Weiner argues that it is not India’s poverty which prevents the introduction of universal primary education and the banning of child labour, rather it is lack of political will and the ‘belief systems’ prevalent in Indian society. Born to Work is based on first-hand field investigations into the employment of child labour in five industries: brassware, gem polishing, lock-making, pottery, and glass manufacture. Neera Burra documents the hazards that these children face and argues that working from a young age leads to a shortened working life. Thus, child labour is not only a consequence of poverty, but also a major cause of it. In Child Rights in India, Asha Bajpai provides a detailed overview of the rights of the child in domestic and international law, with a detailed analysis of case law. The chapter excerpted here is devoted to the ‘Right Against Economic Exploitation’ and includes an examination of various government schemes and NGO interventions, as well as testimonies from children who work as domestic labourers. 019670

Times Group Books; New Delhi, India; 2011; 9789380942735; First Edition; Softcover; New;
Finanstreet, Mythili Bhusnurmath's fortnightly column has been appearing in The Economic Times for over a decade. Its crisp, Straight-forward, easy-to-understand style have given it a wide following not only among policy-makers, economists, bankers and other financial sector players but also among the public at large.This book is a selection of the columns that appeared in the paper during the five-year period September 2006 to September 2011. It scans an eventful period in economic history, coinciding with the boom years prior to 2008, the crisis years of 2008 -09 and the faint glimmerings of revival that emerged late 2010. Drawing upon her vast experience, both as a professional banker and as an editorial page columnist, the author provides a rare insight into many of the debates that took centre-stage during this period, notably the growth-inflation trade-off where the jury is still out. Analytical, hard-hitting and invariably original, the book is a valuable addition to the growing economic literature of the post-reform period. 104635

A Postcolonial People: South Asians in Britain
Hurst & Company; London, UK; 1850657971; First Edition; Paperback; New;
The diversity and complexity of British Asian life is plain for all to see and has been celebrated in literature, poetry and film, not to mention performing arts and music. Till now, however, an accessibly written introductory volume on the South Asian presence has been absent from our bookshelves. A Postcolonial People is an innovative and intriguing blend of scholarship and reportage on the multi-faceted experience of British Asians covering everything from discrimination to bhangra, Bradford to chicken tikka, Asian Britsih cultural landscapes to arranged marriages. Eschewing both anthropological approaches and overtly theoretical analyses, the contributors map out the heterodox impact of British Asians on the United Kingdom, detailing their achievement and setbacks, points of intersection and divergence as a postcolonial people and everyday lives. Weaker Sections: The Psycho-Social Perspective
Gyan Books Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 1998; 8121205670; Hardcover; New; New;
It is strange and shocking too that centuries old sufferings and deprivations of the weaker sections of Indian Society could not be properly and legitimately attended to by social scientists. Weaker Sections : The Psycho-Social Perspective systematically presents the conditions of weaker sections, viz. The Scheduled Castes and Tribes, weakest of the weakers, the scavengers, Minorities, Women, Children and Aged People in their psycho-social perspective. The socioeconomic, social and psychological hardships and sufferings faced by them, however, remained an untold fact. The book posits the information of strong and weak points of these sections based on empirical studies, and critical and objective Views by a galaxy of psychologists, social reformers, sociologists, historians and many others. Such information will be of immense use not only to planners and Policy makers in the planning of remedial Measures to be taken for the upliftment of weaker sections but also to the social scientists, researchers and social workers.Printed Pages: 276. 105897

Sage Publications; New Delhi, India; 2009; 8178298856; First Edition; Paperback; New;
Participatory Rural Appraisal (PRA) methods, now known as Participatory Learning and Action (PLA), have been extensively used in development research, action and evaluation. This book is based on the author’s decade-long intensive field experience—each method is explained by drawing on field-based illustrations. The book vividly describes the methods of PRA, highlighting the essential features as well as the application, merits and limitations of each method. Participatory Rural Appraisal: Principles, Methods and Application outlines the application of PRA methodology in areas like participatory poverty assessment, sustainable livelihood analysis, assessment of hunger, vulnerability analysis, organizational analysis, monitoring and evaluation. Separate sections on SWOT analysis and on the method of interview and dialogue are also included in the book. A chapter on the roles of members of a PRA team is another key feature of this book, which would be immensely valuable for students, researchers and academicians working in the areas of social work, rural development, agriculture, and environmental science, and also for NGO workers and trainers and researchers in the development field.
