Astrology for Overcoming Cancer
Chaukhamba Publications; New Delhi, India; 2009; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New;
In the face of near incurability of cancer, Medical Science today underlines the importance of early diagnosis. By and large we are either ignorant or prone to ignore its early symptoms. But think of a person who has the benefit of an expert astrologer's prophecy about the likelihood of his vulnerability towards this dreaded disease. He is more likely to be alert and cautious to take prompt and thorough care of the early symptoms as compared to a layman. With the help of astrological consultation in time, the otherwise avoidable sudden shock and damage can be reduced, if not completely eliminated. Apart from this, even when the disease has been contracted, Astrology with its spiritual ramifications strengthens the patient to overcome the devastating misery by infusing a deep feeling of solace in him. The Book lays emphasis on the correlation between the planets and the diseases known to our sages and cogently places this to the service of man. It concludes, on the basis of a host of actual case studies, that astrology is more useful than any other system of prophecy of diseases. The book embodies a research work based on the study of hundreds of birth charts of cancer patients. This research work is weaved into a well designed pattern in the shape of 27 well researched articles by eminent astrologers that cover various aspects of medical astrology. Amidst the wealth of astrological knowledge, the book presents the time honoured WISDOM that what cannot be cured, should be endured or overcome and it is this aspect which makes the human science of astrology more humane.Printed Pages: 421. 100554

Natal Planets and Fatal Diseases
Chaukhamba Publications; New Delhi, India; 2009; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New;
Planetary constellation at birth determines the best and the worst, the good and bad that continue to happen in human life. Whether it is prime of Health of fatal diseases its all due to natal planets, their movements, positioning, aspecting, ascendancy and unique combination. Natal charts depicting the situation and placement of planets are indeed powerful tools to decipher the highs and lows, the ebb and flow of life’s rich diversity. The placement of the planets in the horoscope of several persons have been studied to establish the humane nature of the discipline of astrology. Shri T.P. Trivedi recounts a tell-tale anecdote. The parents of a boy who had weak eye sight due to an accident in the early childhood, asked him about his career and educational prospects. The boy had got good Medical treatment and as such the parents thought he was fully cured. Shri Trivedi’s study of the boy’s horoscope hinted at something else, based on this he made a query whether the boy was suffering from loss of vision in the left eye. The parents laughed at him. He called the boy and closed his right eye by his palm and asked him to read the spellings of A Few words of a calendar. The parents were astonished when their son failed to read. Thus confirmation of the reading of the boy’s horoscope led to the discovery of the real situation. The parents then consulted the ophthalmologist who suggested certain preventive measures which cured the boy to a considerable extent. The astrologer-duo take us into the thickets of certain mental tendencies that end up with drug addiction, mental diseases, hearing troubles and extends to cover yet more fatal diseases like angina pectoris, heart attack, trachocardia, myocardial infarition and various kinds of cancer. The Book deals with its theme in and through 15 chapters. Apart from delving deep in various dimensions of medical Astrology (through such chapters like Medical Science and Cardiac Problems, Cardiac Troubles and Planets, Planet and Paralysis), the book also deals with such modern day manmade ailments like drug abuse by way of case studies. A novel aspect of the book is well thought out and well-meant study of “Length of Life” under three chapters titled-Length of life (13), Easy Method for Judgement of Life Span (14) and Longevity at a glance: Guidelines (15). The book does not just stop short of elaborating the causal link of the natal planets with fatal diseases (both physical and mental) but suggests ways and means to overcome and surmount them by various specific mantras, poojas and other spiritual practices to placate them to assuage their otherwise unbearable effect.Printed Pages: 300. 100569

Indian Logic in Its Sources: On Validity of Inference
Munshiram Manoharlal Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 1984; 8121504465; First Edition; Hard Cover; New; New; 14 Cms x 22 Cms
This book endeavours to present the source-materials of Indian logic on an important topic-important passages and extracts from the original Sanskrit texts-in literal English translation followed by detailed notes explaining the cryptic expressions and peculiar terminology of the ancient and medieval Indian philosophers so that an inquisitive reader, even without the mastery of the Sanskrit language, may have a close acquaintance with the original sources. The Sanskrit originals too are given at the end for possible reference and comparison. The topic chosen is validity of inference or anumana-pramanya and extracts have been given from such masterly works as the Nyayamanjari of Jayanta Bhatta, the Khandanakhandakhadya of Sriharsa and others. The introduction which gives in clear and simple English a general idea about the various aspects of inference as a pramana tries to make easier the entry into the intricacies of the texts themselves. As the systems of Indian logic and philosophy have developed to a great extent through mutual confrontation, extracts arguing both for and against the validity of inference have been included. Stepping Out: Life and Sexuality in Rural India
Penguin; New Delhi, India; 2003; 0143029428; First Edition; Paperback; New; New; 13 Cms x 20 Cms
Consider the following: Eleven out of twelve abortions in India are illegal. The 2001 Census showed a decline in the number of females per thousand males in the most literate and prosperous states, especially in the 0-5 age group. The private sector has more doctors and fewer beds than government hospitals, thereby emphasizing outpatient care. And while Indian traditions sanctify fertility and motherhood, government policies and health care services are focused on controlling fertility. These are some of the paradoxes of India’s health care system Mrinal Pande encountered when she set out on her journey across several states to put together information on the health of Indian women. She soon realized it could not be a mere documentation of the history of reproductive health in India and the state of India’s public health care system. Through listening to women’s perspectives on their bodies when they came for treatment and conversations with dedicated health workers, she gained an insight into larger realities. The result is a patchwork quilt of narratives about women’s lives—how they are affected by their environment, their perspectives on male and female sexuality, the mystery of pregnancy, the joy of birth, the fear of infertility, the pain of backroom abortions and the often bleak world of adolescent girls. Mrinal Pande also discusses important issues like the population policies followed by the government over half a century and the consequences of a welfare state abdicating its obligation to provide basic health care for all in its pursuit of globalization and market economics. Through it all she reveals enormous faith in the role of non-governmental organizations in providing better health care services—the dedicated doctors and attendants who are making a difference, helping women step out from the dark bylanes and silences of their lives to create a socio-cultural milieu which restores their basic dignity and rights. The Ever-Transcending Quest: A Literary Analysis of the Poetry of Sri Chinmoy
D.K. Printworld (P) Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2015; 8124608024; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New; 15 x 23 Cm
A quarter century ago I recognized the intensely personal but also revolutionary nature of Sri Chinmoy’s writings on spirituality. Never before has anyone dared to suggest that the divinity Himself is evolving and transcending. This was a spirituality that soared above the divisions of religion, and potentially rendered religion obsolete! A spirituality eminently suited to our times. His explanations of the different levels of consciousness that jostle for predominance inside each individual; perceptions of the Ultimate Goal of life, and the Higher Consciousness that permeates the universe simply made sense, even seeming to pre-empt the direction of quantum physics. The broad scope of his work was exhilarating – philosophy, literature, music, artworks and the importance of physical fitness to receive the higher light of meditation into the body, departing from the usual portrayal of a Guru and path to enlightenment. It was clear that it would take many decades to understand and absorb his teachings, and by 2007, his oeurve had more than doubled. The question was how to investigate such vast material. An overview was needed to begin some sort of dialogue with a man who had reached the summits of transcendental heights, and was, in a way, too far beyond our understanding. The Quest theme seemed to fit, and yet even that fell short. Sri Chinmoy always smashed through barriers, and so too an even higher view of the Quest was necessary – the Ever-Transcending Quest was the only way to explain his Beloved Supreme and the continuing evolution of consciousness. It was the interdependence between the Supreme and the human that captivated me. This book is a tentative exploration. Printed Pages: 162. 100297

In Stereotype: South Asia in the Global Literary Imaginary
Munshiram Manoharlal Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2016; 8121513219; First Indian Edition; Hardcover; New; New; 16 x 24 Cm
IN STEREOTYPE confronts the importance of cultural stereotypes in shaping the ethics and reach of global literature. Mrinalini Chakravorty focuses on the seductive force and explanatory power of stereotypes in multiple South Asian contexts, whether depicting hunger, crowdedness, filth, slums, death, migrant flight, terror, or outsourcing. She argues that such commonplaces are crucial to defining cultural identity in contemporary literature and shows how the stereotype’s ambivalent nature exposes the crises of liberal development in South Asia. Chakravorty considers the influential work of Salman Rushdie, Aravind Adiga, Michael Ondaatje, Monica Ali, Mohsin Hamid, and Chetan Bhagat, among others, to illustrate how stereotypes about South Asia provide insight into the material and psychic investments of contemporary imaginative texts: the colonial novel, the transnational film, and the international best-seller. Probing circumstances that range from the independence of the Indian subcontinent to poverty tourism, civil war, migration, domestic labor, and terrorist radicalism, Chakravorty builds an interpretive lens for reading literary representations of cultural and global difference. In the process, she also reevaluates the fascination with transnational novels and films that manufacture global differences by staging intersubjective encounters between cultures through stereotypes. Birds of the Indus
Oxford University Press; New Delhi, India; 2003; 019577938X; First Edition; Hard Cover; New; New;
The Indus valley is home to birds of the South Asian subcontinent, East Africa, Europe and much of the rest of Asia. According to T.J. Roberts, the region serves as a great caravan-serai for Eurasian Avifauna travellers. Ornithologists give different figures of the total number of the species of birds in the Indus valley and its adjoining lands. In this book, the author, who, though no specialist, with his passion and love for birds, has attempted to present his rare collection of photographs with a complete description of the birds, their appearance, size, habits and habitat. According to him, birds have been nature's very special gift to our planet and there was a time when man accorded special recognition to birds. Supporting this, he has taken narrated references to human cultural associations with the different species and also written the legends and traditions, particularly folklore, associated with them. The descriptions are accompanied with coloured photographs and vernacular names common to the inhabitants of the valley. Printed Pages: 360 with 235 colour photographs. 002551

21550 Muhammad Arif Qandhari
Pragati Publications; New Delhi, India; 1993; 817307013X; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New;
Tarikh-i-Akbari, also known as Tarikh-i-Qandhari, or Muzaffar Nama, the first chronicle of Emperor Akbar's reign is an immensely important source of information on the 16th Century History of India particularly the formative years of his career. Though the major pre-occupation of modern scholars has been with Abul Fazl's Akbar Nama and Badauni's Muntakhab-ut-Tawarikh, it supplements in many ways of the former's works while Farishta in his Gulshan-i-Ibrahimi and Nihawandi in his Maasir-i-Rahimi explicitly acknowledge their indebtedness to it. Tarikh-i-Akbari, compiled by Muhammad Arif Qandhari at the behest of Muzaffar Khan, when completed, was presented to the Khan who conferred a Khilat on him. Arif worked under Bairam Khan and Muzaffar Khan and later he was appointed the diwan of the Sarkar of Punjab on the recommendation of Shaikh-ul-Islam, Maulana Abdullah. Unpretentious narration as the Tarikh-i-Akbari is, it shines not because of the ornamental artificiality of Arif, but because of the greatness of its subject.Tarikh-i-Akbari presents Emperor Akbar changing India while Arif happens to be one of the privileged witnesses.Printed Pages: 315. 101203

Perspectives on Turkey’s Multi-Regional Role in the 21st Century
KW Publishers; New Delhi, India; 2015; 9789383649556; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New;
This book dwells upon the various aspects of the Turkish foreign policy in the different regions of the world, especially with the dawn of the twenty-first century. Turkey has attracted international attention due to a marked transformation in the country’s domestic and external realms, which in turn, has led to an increased activism in its foreign policy actions. Particularly, Turkey’s economic rise has fuelled the country’s ambition and quest for a more significant role in international affairs. These transformations have come about with the ascendance of the Adalet ve Kalkinma Partisi (AKP) [or Justice & Development Party (JDP)] to power in 2002. Turkey, under the AKP, moved towards a ‘new’ direction in the foreign policy and consequently endeavoured to play a larger role in West Asia (Middle East), the Balkans, southern Mediterranean, the Caucasus, Central Asia, Africa and Asia. The country has emerged as a multi-regional player having stakes and tractions on a range of issues in these regions. The several discernible aspects of Turkey’s involvement are dealt with in the contributions to this volume.Printed Pages: 378. 105037

Changing Status of Women in Central Asia: A Comparative Study of Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan
Gyan Books Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 8121213444; Hardcover; New; New;
The present book critically observes the status of women in Central Asia after 1990's. The effects of Soviet legacy in the present context are also analyzed at extent. In contemporary transition period they are facing many problems including revival of religion, new democratic political order, capitalist economic system and traditional social system. These new changes have both negative and positive effects over the lives of women also. A modest attempt has been made to compare the differences in contemporary position of Kazakh and Uzbek women despite of their common USSR legacy and Islamic society. The relevance of this book can be judged both in the context of Islamic and Socialist Feminist theories and practices to understand patriarchal organization in Central Asian states. The streams of Socialist and Islamic Feminism are critically analyzed and further the way it made contribution in women's emancipation. Socialist feminism generally took every step in women emancipation in national interests rather than in women's interest. Though the book broadly deals with the position of women in Central Asia, but at the same time its focus is to study Kazakh and Uzbek women. Printed Pages: 286. 111534

Westland Limited; New Delhi, India; 9789384030544; Softcover; New;
This is the story of a few good men. The men of the 4th bn Brigade of the Guards (1 Rajput). They were simple, ordinary men, like you and me. But when push came to shove, they rose to the occasion and left an indelible mark on the pages of history.THE GARUD STRIKES is the compelling story of 4 Guards (1 Rajput) and the critical role they played in the 1971 Indo-Pak War; in freeing seventy-five million people from the torturous and bloody clutches of the Pakistani Army. In merely sixteen days, under the inspiring leadership of Lt. Col. Himmeth Singh, 4 Guards (1 Rajput), played a pivotal role in leading for India one of the fastest successful military campaigns of modern times; one which not only led to the creation of Bangladesh, but also resulted in the capture of 95,000 Pakistani soldiers. Narrated by Mukul Deva, India’s literary storm trooper, in his inimitable, compelling style, THE GARUD STRIKES is the breath taking story of the lightning campaign, seen through the eyes of the officers, JCOs and men of 4 Guards (1 Rajput).As you trudge through the mud and slush of Bangladesh, you will smell the gun smoke, the impact of bullets on flesh, the blood, the fears and tears, as 4 Guards (1 Rajput) smashed its way through the pride of the Pakistani Army, in their dash for Dacca. 109684

Green and Saffron: Hindu Nationalism and Indian Environmental Politics
Orient BlackSwan/Permanent Black; New Delhi, India; 2014; 8178243938; Softcover; New;
Mukul Sharma argues that these two social currents—environmental conservation and Hindu politics—have forged bonds which reveal the hijacking of environmentalism by conservative and retrograde worldviews. This, he says, constitutes a major aspect of hinterland political life which neither academics nor journalists have seriously analysed. Environmentalism and politics cannot be seen as separate from each other, for environmental issues are being defined in new ways by an anti-secular form of Hinduism. In turn, Hindu ideologues are gaining mileage for their ideology by espousing major environmental projects. Anna Hazare’s impact is studied in detail through a careful field investigation of his environmental initiative in Ralegan Siddhi. Sunderlal Bahuguna’s opposition to the Tehri Dam in the Garhwal Himalaya is outlined with great anthropological subtlety. And the regeneration of Vrindavan’s urban and riverine hygiene by internationally funded NGOs is subjected to a historical scrutiny that includes an examination of how Lord Krishna has been redefined as the great god of conservation. Sharma discusses Nazi Germany and fascist appropriations of environmentalism in Europe to contextualize Hindu conservative nationalists within a larger universe. By pinpointing the communal and authoritarian discourses within some of the new social movements, his book alters the way in which we look at everyday life in the subcontinent. For, says Sharma, at stake in this intermeshing of environmental Green and Hindu Saffron is nothing less than the way Indians understand their humanity.Printed Pages:328. 101989

Ayurvedic Yoga Therapy
Motilal Banarsidass Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2009; 8178223430; Softcover; New;
Ayurvedic Yoga Therapy developed by Mukunda Stiles describes the underlying elements of both Yoga and Ayurveda, the latter being the healing side of the former. The author provides the reader, the deep wisdom of Yoga as an experience through the science of life, Ayurveda. By marrying the sister sciences of Yoga and Ayurveda, Mukunda steers a way from an increasing tendency to ‘medicalize’ yoga therapy. Instead of offering prescriptive recommendations for specific medical diagnoses, he presents sequences of Vinyasa and pranayama suited to the various Ayurvedic body types. Yoga therapists and practitioners using this book can access a deeper level of preventative self-care, attuning to the rhythm and balance of each individual. Enlivened by stories and wisdom teachings, this book provides food for body, soul and spirit, guiding practitioners towards fulfillment of their highest potential. To properly comprehend the vast knowledge and perspective of Yoga, and especially Ayurveda, you must gaze through the eyes and understanding of a master teacher. Through Mukunda’s book, you have the opportunity to experience the science of life and the wisdom of yoga through the wise eyes and soul of a master. It helps you understand Ayurveda and Yoga sufficiently, leading you to specific Classical Yoga practices that have the potential to bring about a lasting change in your lifestyle, health, and overall outlook on the purpose of life.Printed Pages: 267. 102664
