Barbed Wire Fence: Stories of Displacement from the Barak Valley of Assam
Niyogi Books; New Delhi, India; 9789381523292; Softcover; New;
Barbed Wire Fence: Stories of Displacement from the Barak Valley of Assam is a collection of seventeen short stories that expresses the myriad facets of the immigrant experience of people from present-day Bangladesh who were forced to leave their native land during and after India’s independence and settle, among other places, in the Barak valley of Assam. Some stories explore the anguished sorrow of alienation while others speak of the turmoil of fractured identities. The stories lend a voice to those Bengalis for whom the painful memory of their beloved homeland is further exacerbated by the fact that they are unwanted in Assam. They try to capture the terrifying essence of the brutal struggle for survival; the elemental fight against extreme deprivation, social exploitation and political oppression.Printed Pages: 204. 106539

Kumarajiva: The Transcreator of Buddhist Chinese Diction
Niyogi Books; New Delhi, India; 2011; 8189738194; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New; 23 x 29 Cm
This work by Prof. Nirmala Sharma is the first full-length narration of the extraordinary life, immense literary output, manifold philosophical perspectives of Kumarajiva and the development of a new translation methodology by him. He is the great transcreator of Buddhist Chinese diction. His oeuvre covers all genres of Buddhist literature. All his works, both extant and lost, are detailed. The author discusses at length his crucial texts that became the foundation of sects and philosophical systems in East Asia. Kucha the homeland of Kumarajiva excelled in painting, music and dance. Around a hundred illustrations of murals and scrolls vividly portray this ambience of Kucha. The author has added a writeup of President Daisaku Ikeda, whose devotion to the unparalleled monk-translator adds to the deep understanding of the mind and message of Kumarajiva to humanity. President Ikeda discusses Kumarajiva’s new systematization of terminology to bring greater clarity to Buddhist thought and practice. The author ends the book with the translation of the original Chinese life of Kumarajiva, translated by Prof. J. Nobel, from the Lives of Eminent Monks written by Hui-chiao in AD 519. Marketing as Strategy: Understanding the CEO's Agenda for Driving Growth and Innovation
Penguin; New Delhi, India; 2004; 0670057894; First Edition; Hard Cover; New; New; 16.5 Cms x 25 Cms
Once viewed as a critical expenditure, marketing is now considered a cost sink. What happened? And what can marketers do to regain a prominent role in their organizations? Nirmalya Kumar argues that the only way for marketers to get back on the CEO's agenda is to tackle issues that merit the CEO's attention. The fate of marketing hinges on elevating the role of marketing executives from promotions-focused tacticians to customer-focused leaders of transformational initiatives that are strategic, cross-functional, and bottom-line oriented. Based on more than fifteen years of researching, teaching, and consulting in the field of marketing, Marketing as Strategy outlines seven organization-wide transformation initiatives that will win marketing a prominent seat at the executive table. Through revealing company examples, Kumar shows how focus on the "three Vs"—the valued customer, the value proposition, and the value network—can help marketers lead the shift: • From tactical market segments to strategic segments that enable deep differentiation • From selling commodity products to providing customer solutions • From shunning new distribution channels to exploiting the right ones to generate growth • From an organizational mind-set focused around countries and products to a global mind-set oriented around customers and relationships From aggressively acquiring brands to actively consolidating the brand portfolio Marketing as Strategy reveals what marketers must do to secure the future of their field and shape the destiny of their firms. Philosophizing the Body: Physical, Social, Psychosomatic and Spiritual Dimensions
Christian World Imprints/B.R. Publishing Corporation; New Delhi, India; 2016; 9789351481812; Hardcover; New; New;
A contradiction about the body runs through our culture. On the one hand it is highly valued; the ambient materialism attests to it. But, on the other hand, it is relativized as regards its ontological status, anthropological significance and ethical implications. The substantive challenge is to articulate what mind and body means. The human being is the articulation of these two realities. Two dangers now lurk in all walks of life including our everyday discourse: mind without body and body without mind.As Christian philosophers of India, we need to address this substantive challenge. This collection of essays presents in a single volume various approaches and perspectives towards philosophizing the body, each perspective valid in its own terms but not exhaustive or categorical. These multiple complementing and at times conflicting perspectives and approaches only point out to the richness of the philosophical discussion that this topic calls for. No attempt is made to homogenize in order to offer a single philosophy, but instead possible ways of philosophizing the body from different perspectives are explored. This open-ended approach is inevitable in our contemporary times where we learn to celebrate difference and embrace heterogeneity. This work reflects novel insights into philosophizing the body and it will hopefully be a valuable resource for any further research on this theme. Printed Pages: 264. 113677

Musings and Meanings: Hermeneutical Ripples
Christian World Imprints/B.R. Publishing Corporation; New Delhi, India; 2016; 9789351481638; Hardcover; New; New;
This edited work titled "Musings and Meanings : Hermeneutical Ripples..." is the outcome of the international conference hosted in honor of two eminent veteran scholars Richard De Smet and Jean de Marneffe of the Faculty of Philosophy at Jnana-Deepa Vidyapeeth, Pune in January 2014 to dwell extensively on the art of understanding from both the Eastern and the Western perspectives. All the scholarly essays in this edited work critically engage with contemporary theories of cross-cultural understanding and the discourse on the stranger. This work therefore is attempt to formulate a cross-cultural interpretation that incorporates the ambivalence of boundaries, the enabling dimension of essentialism and acknowledges the role that fore-meanings and fore-structures have on cross-cultural understanding. Collected Poems
Oxford University Press; New Delhi, India; 2005; 0195672496; First Edition; Paperback; New;
The period in modern Hindi literature known as 'Chayavad' marked the first blossoming of poetry in the language which, for its originality, depth, and technical resourcefulness, still remains unsurpassed. This anthology provides a sampling of the works of four major poets of this revival--Jayshankar Prasad, Suryakant Tripathi 'Nirala', Sumitranandan Pant, and Mahadevi Varma. Like the Romantic age in the West, Chayavad was marked with elements of symbolism and mysticism. Upa nishadic teachings, the English Romantic poets, the French Symbolists, Rabindranath Tagore, Sanskrit aesthetics--all influenced this genre. In Chayavad poetry, modern Hindi attained an incontestable brilliance and elegance of expression. Chayavad poets are known outside India by the few available translations of their elegant, yet often baffling, short lyrics. This unique volume brings together translations of a few significant long poems--Prasad's Amsu (a poem of philosophical import) and Nirala's Ram ki Shakti-Puja (a short epic on the theme of war). Also included is a selection of the more typical short lyrics by all four poets, many of them previously untranslated. Printed Pages: 144. 028429

Cultural Rhythms in Emotions, Narratives and Dance
Munshiram Manoharlal Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2002; 8121509939; First Edition; Hardbound; New; New; 14 Cms x 22 Cms
Art is a vital component of culture in a generic sense and of being cultured in a specific sense. This book identifies the interplay between dance and lifestyle in the specific context of Tamil Brahmin culture. It sets out an agenda which raises fundamental issues concerning cultural construction of identity in the matrix of symbolic configurations, experience and expression of emotions, rituals, dance and life philosophy. The rhythms of Tamil Brahmin culture integrate creativity, self-expression and collective identity in various processes of life at one level and merge with the universal rhythm of cosmic order at the other. The concern is with appreciating cultural rhythms that run as an undercurrent throughout the book. The major contribution of this work is in evolving multidisciplinary research methodologies and models for the study of art in living and art of living in a culture. A Dialogue with Faiths and Flora
Bharatiya Vidya Prakashan; Delhi, India; 2000; Softcover; New;
It is indeed a fact, inspite of a great development in Science and technology, the deep attitude for Religion in man exists as a constant historical continuity all over the world. This unique trait is witnessed in the deeper layers of human mind beyond all spatiotcmporal and relative prejudices. The call for all religions presently consists in critical and rational guarding against closed extremity and opaqueness to fresh ideas and changes. They must remain constantly conscious and adequately prepared to squarely meet the stupendous complexities of the developing world. Authoritarianism and converting impositions, cloistered subjectivity and blind fanaticism possess no place in this nobler pursuit of a new vision. This critical spiritual reawakening pre-supposes a total acceptance of all religious quest and its value to the mankind. The piquant irony, however, that rests with us is that there is a crisis of faith in the religions of the world on one hand and too much emphasis on science and technology as the panacea for all human solutions on the other hand. As a result, humanity finds itself at crossroads everywhere. What is patent, however, is A Clear hope for future still existing with the way of all faiths. For unity and harmony, order and oneness are considered as organic and intrinsic factors of this great world. The world of faiths still holds this potency in directing man to the creative and constructive existence. Hence there has to be a constant inquiry and dialogue with all faiths in Context of this totality of all existence. 103765

In India’s far eastern outpost, the Andaman & Nicobar Islands, the 9.0 magnitude earthquake under the Indian Ocean killed 10,136 people. The Car Nicobar Islands were among the worst affected.The Indian Air Force lost 116 personnel at its devastated Car Nicobar base. With a 100day deadline, seven Indian Air Force officers, including then Wing Commander Nitin Sathe, and a group of dedicated IAF personnel undertook the tough task of rebuilding the IAF’s Car Nicobar air base. Ten years on, now an Air Commodore, Nitin Sathe reveals how the IAF, with courage and determination, brought its Car Nicobar base back to life. The Science of Enlightment: Enlightment, Liberation and God
D.K. Printworld (P) Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2009; 8124601305; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New; 15 x 23 Cm
What is the precise nature of Reality or God? And what exactly, in scientific terms, is the much-talked about spiritual phenomenon called Enlightenment? Is it at all scientifically possible for a state devoid of ego to exist? And can a person do his normal duties in life in such a state? This book answers these and kindred questions convincingly: in a way that should appeal to a scientist, a spiritualist and a lay person alike. Uncommonly combining in him the rationality of a medical scientist and the profundity of his religio-philosophical studies, the author demonstrates how the spiritual phenomena of Enlightenment and Liberation do have an eminently satisfactory scientific explanation -- an explanation which he also reconciles with conventional spiritual teachings. Finally, flitting adroitly from Advaita to Tao, Zen to Sufism, Buddhism to Christianity, Dr. Trasi shows how the teachings of different faiths aren't different in essence, but just constitute intricate parts of the one and the same grand, big picture. With deep insight, forceful logic and supporting references, Dr. Trasi's book not only dispels many of the myths, mis-conceptions and distortions woven around Enlightenment, the Liberated State, the Soul and Death, but explores the rationale behind wide-ranging traditional beliefs as well. Also set out is a scientific explanation of diverse spiritual terms. Nor is the practical aspect neglected here -- including, as it does, a scientifically-backed guide to offset the oft-recurring doubts and questions that nag the average spiritual enthusiast. Written lucidly, the book is bound to interest scientists, sceptics, and anyone else even remotely concerned with spirituality.Printed Pages: 336. 100425

India is a land where spiritual masters and mystics have blossomed from time to time, sharing their spiritual experience and knowledge for the benefit of all. They have explored a variety of spiritual, religious and philosophical dimensions to unravel the meaning of existence and significance of life. This book throws light on a rarely-studied aspect of Indian spirituality, its women mystics. The work is an account of the life of a master mystic, Shiva Yogini Amma, a woman who traversed new realms of experience in her spiritual quest. It is a record of her life from her birth to her attaining the nirvikalpa samadhi and after, and her teachings. It details the process of her spiritual realization; a unique experience exploring spiritual states with a foreknowledge and mastery. It explains her understanding of spiritual concepts relating to form and formlessness, maya, reality. It deals with her method of using the body and mind to attain the goals of the spirit. Based on one of her first woman disciples, Satyananda Yogini's recollections, the account elaborates on life in Shiva Yogini Amma's ashrama. It examins her growth as a samnyasin by delving into her daily activities, trances, interactions with disciples, and her teachings, particularly yoga instructions, to learners. The book will be useful to all those interested in spirituality or in studying it as a subject.Printed Pages: 262 with 8 coloured & 4 b/w illustrations. 100417

Good Women Do Not Inherit Land: Politics of Land and Gender in India
Orient BlackSwan; New Delhi, India; 2012; 8187358653; Softcover; New;
‘Good women should not claim a share in the inheritance, even if they have no brothers. ...’ Notions such as this have, in their own way and over time, given the women in the Santal Parganas the resolve to wrest what is rightfully theirs. This is a powerful book in the way in which it unfolds the lives and anxieties of Santal women in the two villages of Dumka district, Jharkhand. From the very beginning, adivasi women come alive through separate life histories.They span different situations and social patterns but all of them relate to rights in landed property, and their own troubled identities in the backdrop of harsh living conditions, social discrimination and lack of state support. Land for the Santal women is not a mere economic resource. It stands for security, social position and identity, and in this men have a distinct advantage. Soon after, writing in a personal vein, the author unfolds how these anxieties of the Santal women resonate her own.Printed Pages: 368. 101771

Primitive Tribes of Orissa and their Development Strategies
D.K. Printworld (P) Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2005; 8124602735; First Edition; Softcover; New; 15 x 23 Cm
Tribal people living in the remote areas of the territory forms an indispensable part of the Indian population. More than 250 different tribal groups inhabit in India, of which 62 tribal groups live in Orissa, each varying in culture, language, economic life and level of literacy. The thirteen tribal groups, namely Birhor, Bondo, Didayi, Dongria-Khond, Juangs, Kharias, Kutia Khond, Lanjia Saoras, Lodhas, Mankidias, Paudi Bhuinyas, Soura and Chuktia Bhunjia, having pre-agricultural level of technology and extremely low level of literacy have been recognized as "Primitive Tribes" of Orissa. These tribal groups remain confined to their own small world and a probe into its history clearly shows that after a few generations the past turns into mythology. It was realized only after the Independence that to have a well-developed and prosperous nation, the needs and problems of the tribals were to be addressed and their welfare to be taken care thereof. The book presents an in-depth study of the various measures and provisions adopted, schemes introduced and plans implemented, since the Fifth Five-Year Plan, to redress the problems of the tribals; and apprises the readers about the on-going attempts in bringing them to the national mainstream through the 13 Micro Projects. Besides, the book presents an extensive detail of the ethnographic features of the entire Primitive Tribes with particular reference to their economic activities, social sanctions and varied problems faced by them. The realistic description of their pathetic life, deprived of all modern facilities, is highly touching and makes one wonder, do such people really exist in the 21st Century? The book will universally appeal to all readers and is highly recommended for the scholars of sociology and anthropology in particular.Printed Pages: 327 with 2 maps & 65 coloues & b/w illustrations. 100487

Material Culture of the Orissan Tribals: An Illustrated Study of Kutia, Dongaria and Malia Kondhs
D.K. Printworld (P) Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2007; 8124604231; First Edition; Softcover; New; 15 x 23 Cm
The book contains the material culture of the three sub-groups of the Kondhs, a major tribal community of Orissa, situated in the districts of Koraput, Kalahandi and Phulbani. It examines the cultural life aspects of the Kutia Kondhs, the Dongaria Kondhs and the Malia Kondhs which remarkably differs from one another even though there is much commonality in their social and cultural life. With numerous illustrations of their settlements, artefacts and art objects, items of material culture and plans of their houses, the book deals with similarities in socio-cultural, religious and aesthetic aspects of their life -- varying occupations, habitats, ecosystems and housing types. It attempts to show that a study of their material culture reveals unity in diversity. For the purpose, it deals with their household objects, quest for good personal care, dress, adornments, religious objects and musical instruments. It describes each artefact/common items of use along with its name (local dialect) in the Kondh communities. Giving an ethnographic account of the different sub-sects as well, the analysis systematically finds out what aspects of their culture has changed over the time and what has seen the least change. The work, both interesting and enlightening, is an attempt to unravel the social and cultural aspects of one of the most ancient and rich tribal traditions of India. It will be an invaluable asset to scholars of a variety of disciplines, mainly anthropology and sociology.Printed Pages: 226. 100497

Sacred Complex of Orissa
Gyan Books Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2000; 8121206804; Hardcover; New; New;
The Scared Complex of Orissa has had its origin and development, since time immemorial. Its evolution is traced back to different ancient dynasties. Later, it flourished under the partronage of the rulers of Solar dynasty and Gajapati Rajas of Orissa. As Puri has become the most important pilgrim centre, many Sadhus and Sanyasis visit it and have their own places of abode which have been developed into monasteries. With the growing ramification and elaboration in ritual services at the Jagannath Temple many ritual functionaries are appointed to serve Lord Jagannath. Thus, Puri has grown into a centre of Sacred Complex with its sacred institutions spread in its hinterland. In fact, the Scared Complex comprises the following: 1. Sacred Geography of Puri, 2. Gajapati Rajas and Lord Jagannath Temple, 3. Ritual functionaries 4. Monastic Order, 5. Brahmin Sasan Villages 6. Minor Rulers of Feudatory States, 7. Pilgrims, Public and Government. These aspects are closely related and dislocation in any of the them has severe repercussions throughout the whole nexus. This study of the Sacred Complex highlights the changes which have taken place in recent times and further, this study has implications for broader enquiries into some of the processes of secularization of modern Hinduism.Printed Pages: 366. 105964

Rabindranath Tagore: A Pictorial Biography
Niyogi Books; New Delhi, India; 8189738755; Hardcover; New; New;
Rabindranath Tagore, a name very close to our hearts, evokes a feeling of pride, awe and inspiration and continues to arouse our curiosity to know more about this multi-faceted personality. Biographers have either tried to analyse his works in the light of his life or in the perspective of his contemporary time. This book chronicles the Poet’s contributions in the context of the period to which he belonged, bringing into light those incidents, anecdotes and issues which have often been overlooked but which nonetheless are significant as they enable us to understand Tagore better.His role as a son, brother, husband, father; his accomplishments as a poet, philosopher, writer, painter, choreographer, actor; his relations with his family, friends, contemporary writers and poets, as well as predecessors; his correspondences with the political leaders of his time within the nation as well as abroad; and above all, his interpretations about life, revealing his quest for love, faith and devotion and his deep-rooted anguish, his unfulfilled dreams and expectations as projected in the broad sweep of this lucid narration reveal two facets of the Poet—a man of extraordinary abilities yet a man having ordinary expectations, who could thereby understand the joys and sorrows of the common man keeping aside his own gains and losses. And it is for this reason that Tagore remains dear to all people cutting across boundaries, generations, caste, creed or sect.Printed Pages: 280 with 172 b/w photographs. 106516

Recovering Subversion: Feminist Politics Beyond the Law
Permanent Black; New Delhi, India; 2004; 8178240858; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New; 14 Cms x 22 Cms
This books is about the relation between law and feminist politics. The area it traverses ranges from feminist initiatives on sexual harassment to the parity movement in France. Nivedita Menon addresses a particular dilemma for radical politics—in particular, feminist politics—in India. The dilemma has become visible over the last two decades and arises at the interface of radical political practice and the logic of constitutionalism. By 'constitutionalism' she refers to the specific method adopted by modern democracies of safeguarding the autonomy of the individual self. It is now generally recognised, however, that this objective is achieved by enforcing universal norms that marginalise and de-legitimise contesting worldviews and value systems. This particular method of organising democracies has a specific history and arose in a particular location—in Europe in the seventeenth century. By historicising this method, Menon shows us how, four centuries later, we live in a very different world. The dilemma that faces radical politics today is therefore what Menon terms the 'paradox of constitutionalism'. This occurs when various differing moral visions come up against the universalising drive of constitutionality and the language of universal rights. By examining three issues that the women's movement in India has engaged with—the practice of selective abortion of female foetuses, sexual violence, and reservations for women in representative institutions—Menon unfolds a two-pronged argument, namely that (a) the language of rights and citizenship is no longer unproblematically available to an emancipatory politics; and (b) that specifically in the context of feminist politics it has become increasingly difficult to sustain 'woman' as the subject of such a politics, despite (or perhaps because of) the explosion of 'gender' as a category of analysis in official state and NGO discourse. The book concludes by exploring the consequences of this understanding for feminist theory and practice. Printed Pages: 288. 031565

Critical Studies in Politics: Exploring Sites, Selves, Power
Orient BlackSwan; New Delhi, India; 2014; 8125052704; Hardcover; New; New;
Critical Studies in Politics is a collection of essays that redefines the discipline of political science. It brings into view objects of study not normally visible to the discipline, through a creative engagement with other disciplinary formations. The volume is divided into four broad intersecting sections. The question of constructions of selfhood emerges as a central pre-occupation in the first titled ‘Exploring Selfhood'. The essays in this section--ranging from the modern Dalit self to the construction of the Asura over time--investigate the construction of the Self in the face of the Other; and looks at selfhood, not so much as a question of past cultural memory but as self-fashioning in the present. The second section--'Spatiality and Power'--analyses the idea of spatiality and explains its relationship with power. It discusses issues ranging from urbanisation and the politics of SEZs, to the entry of cinema halls in Delhi, and its implications for the formation of the 'public'. The third section titled 'State and Governmentality' examines state practices as they render legible various aspects of populations--from prison labour under colonialism to the organisation of official memory by the postcolonial state. 'Reconfiguring Categories of Thought'--the final section--seeks to unsettle conceptual categories such as 'capitalism', 'science', 'politics' and 'development'. Located in the 'interstices of disciplines', these essays by scholars from mainstream political science departments are at once contemporary and historical. This volume will be of interest to students and scholars of political science, film and culture studies, gender studies and anthropology.Printed Pages: 564. 101978
