Integrated Water Resources Management: Global Theory, Emerging Practice and Local Needs
Sage Publications; New Delhi, India; 2006; 0761935495; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New;
Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM) has become the international label for the ‘new approach’ to water resources management. This volume, and in fact the entire series, investigates how this global concept resonates with regional, national and local concerns in South Asia. This is the first volume in a new series under the aegis of the South Asia Consortium for Interdisciplinary Water Resources Studies (SaciWATERs) and explains the IWRM. This volume begins by tracking the emergence of IWRM as a central notion in water debates. It then discusses the European experience with IWRM in the context of the European Water Framework Directive—the most comprehensive attempt so far at an IWRM-based water governance and management system. Thereafter, the book turns to South Asia. Among other things, the contributors argue that: - in South Asia, IWRM is a concept in search of a constituency, and not a concept that has emerged from regional or local practice; - understanding and implementing IWRM requires interdisciplinary analysis and frameworks; - IWRM is a ‘boundary’ concept—plastic enough to adapt to local needs and the constraints of several parties employing it, yet robust enough to maintain a common identity across sites; - there are issues and limits in transplanting the model of river basin organizations, a central thrust within the global IWRM discourse; and — a focus on water alone may be misguided, and that IWRM should look intensely at land-water linkages. Asymmetric Warfare in South Asia: The Causes and Consequences of the Kargil Conflict
Cambridge University Press; Cambridge, UK; 2010; 0521193850; First South Asian Edition; Hardcover; New; New; 16 Cms x 24 Cms
The 1999 conflict between India and Pakistan near the town of Kargil in contested Kashmir was the first military clash between two nuclear-armed powers since the 1969 Sino-Soviet war. Kargil was a landmark event not because of its duration or casualties, but because it contained a very real risk of nuclear escalation. Until the Kargil conflict, academic and policy debates over nuclear deterrence and proliferation occurred largely on the theoretical level. This deep analysis of the conflict offers scholars and policymakers a rare account of how nuclear-armed states interact during military crisis. Written by analysts from India, Pakistan, and the United States, this unique book draws extensively on primary sources, including unprecedented access to Indian, Pakistani, and U.S. government officials and military officers who were actively involved in the conflict. This is the first rigorous and objective account of the causes, conduct, and consequences of the Kargil conflict. Contents 1. Introduction: the importance of the Kargil conflict Peter R. Lavoy Part I. Causes and Conduct of the Conflict: 2. The strategic context of the Kargil conflict: a Pakistani perspective Zafar Iqbal Cheema 3. Pakistan's motivations and calculations for the Kargil conflict Feroz Hassan Khan, Peter R. Lavoy and Christopher Clary 4. Military operations in the Kargil conflict John H. Gill 5. American diplomacy and the 1999 Kargil Summit at Blair House Bruce Riedel 6. Kargil: the nuclear dimension Timothy D. Hoyt 7. Why Kargil did not produce general war: the crisis-management strategies of Pakistan, India, and the United States Peter R. Lavoy Part II: Consequences and Impact of the Conflict: 8. Surprise at the top of the world: India's systemic and intelligence failure James J. Wirtz and Surinder Rana 9. Militants in the Kargil conflict: myths, realities, and impacts C. Christine Fair 10. Indian Youth in a Transforming World: Attitudes and Perceptions
Sage Publications; New Delhi, India; 2009; 8132101715; First Edition; Paperback; New;
This book comprises the first nationwide study based on face-to-face interviews with 5,000 youth to capture the popular mood of this important demographic segment of contemporary India. It records their perceptions of various issues, ranging from modernity, development, globalization and unemployment, to leisure and lifestyle, social networks and family, and their hopes and aspirations for the future. Indian Youth in a Transforming World: Attitudes and Perceptions underlines that Indian youth reflect an authentic multiplicity of aspirations, ‘world views’ and interest, quite like the rich tapestry of India’s diversity. It indicates that they are a mix of continuity and change. However, they stand distinct in many ways from the youth the world over. This book is also likely to break some myths related to the youth, opening avenues for new debates. For example, it reveals that there is hardly any decline in interest in politics between today’s youth and the previous generations. At the same times, it also helps strengthen some commonly held perceptions about the youth.. The book would be invaluable for professionals in advertising and other sectors of the media and all those involved in market research. Students and teachers of specialized psychology courses, behavioural sociology, political sociology, will also find it useful. Printed Pages: 208. 028608

From Science to God: The Mystery of Consciousness and the Meaning of Light
Yogi Impressions; Mumbai, India; 2003; 8188479039; First Edition; Paperback; New; 14 Cms x 22 Cms
What does the speed of light have to do with the Koran, St. John and Aldous Huxley? Where does quantum physics meet the psychology of meditation? And if "I think, therefore I am," why can’t physics, chemistry or biology explain where human thought comes from? 'From Science to God' offers a crash course in the nature of reality. It is the story of Peter Russell's lifelong exploration into the nature of consciousness - how he went from being a strict atheist, studying mathematics and physics at Cambridge University, to realizing a profound personal synthesis of the mystical and scientific. Using his own tale of curiosity and exploration as the book’s backbone, Russell blends physics, psychology, and philosophy to reach a new worldview in which consciousness is a fundamental quality of creation. He shows how all the ingredients for this worldview are in place; nothing new needs to be discovered. We have only to put the pieces together and explore the new picture of reality that emerges. 'From Science to God' is as much a personal story of an open-minded skeptic as it is a tour de force of scientific and religious paradigm shifts. Russell takes us from Galileo’s den to the lecture halls of Cambridge where he studied with Stephen Hawking. "If you had asked me then if there was a God," says the best-selling author of his scientific beginnings, "I would have pointed to mathematics." But no matter what empirical truths science offered Russell, one thorny question remained: How can something as immaterial as consciousness, ever arise from something as unconscious as matter? Integrating a deep knowledge of science with his own experiences of meditation, Russell arrives at a universe similar to that described by many mystics — one in which science and spirit no longer conflict. The bridge between them, he shows, is light. 'From Science to God' invites us to cross that bridge to a radically different, and ultimately healing, view of ourselves and the universe — one in which God takes on new meaning, and spiritual practice a deeper significance. Over the past twenty years, Peter Russell has consulted with IBM, Apple, American Express, Nike, and other major corporations. His previous books include 'The TM Technique', 'The Brain Book', and 'Waking Up in Time'. He lives in Sausalito, CA. Printed Pages: 152. 027830

A Sustainable Fiscal Policy for India: An International Perspective
Oxford University Press; New Delhi, India; 2006; 019567488X; First Edition; Hard Cover; New; New;
India s economy has grown rapidly since the beginning of the 1990s despite a large and growing fiscal deficit and rising public levels relative to output. This book explores whether India has found a way to reconcile sustained expansionary fiscal policies with relative macroeconomic stability. Drawing on the views of some of the most knowledgeable experts on macroeconomics and fiscal policy, with wide ranging experience in both other emerging market countries as well as in India, it seeks to understand the strengths and weaknesses of India s policies in managing its fiscal position. This volume argues why India does not face serious macroeconomic problems in spite of large fiscal imbalances but at the same time incurring hidden costs on the economy in terms of foregone potential for even higher economic growth. It warns that time is running out for India to address these fiscal imbalances in a way that does not result in enhanced vulnerability to macroeconomic crisis. Printed Pages: 432. 013741

Waking The Giant: Revitalising the Mature Brand
Times Group Books; New Delhi, India; 2010; 8126529032; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New;
The second of three books in a series on strategy by global media company Group M, Waking the Giant addresses the need for companies to shift their strategic thinking as a brand matures. Too often companies let a successful brand spiral downwards as they allow their marketing strategy to stagnate whilst consumer needs are shifting. Dr Steidl offers specific examples of how to develop and implement a successful brand revitalization strategy that all companies can implement. Divided into three sections Waking the Giant covers how to decide if revitalization is the right strategy for your company, how to develop a strategy and then how to choose the best option and implement it.Printed Pages: 240. 104952

The Modern Spirit of Asia: The Spiritual and the Secular in China and India
Orient BlackSwan; New Delhi, India; 2014; 8125054243; Hardcover; New; New;
The Modern Spirit of Asia challenges the notion that modernity in China and India are derivative imitations of the West, arguing that these societies have transformed their ancient traditions in unique and distinctive ways. Peter van der Veer begins with nineteenth-century imperial history, exploring how Western concepts of spirituality, secularity, religion, and magic were used to translate the traditions of India and China. He traces how modern Western notions of religion and magic were incorporated into the respective nation-building projects of Chinese and Indian nationalist intellectuals, yet how modernity in China and India is by no means uniform. While religion is a centerpiece of Indian nationalism, it is viewed in China as an obstacle to progress that must be marginalized and controlled.Printed Pages: 296. 101997

Heavenly Himalayas: The Murals of Mangyu and Other Discoveries in Ladakh
Prestel; Munich, Germany; 2011; 3791345435; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New; 24 x 30 Cm
This volume presents for the first time in book form important and largely unknown treasures of Indo-Kashmiri Buddhism. From the first century BCE to the thirteenth century, Kashmir was a thriving center of Buddhist culture and art. The rise of Islamic peoples led to the destruction of all temples constructed there during the Buddhist era. Yet in the remote Himalayas of Ladakh and other neighboring locations, a few of these archaeological and artistic treasures are exquisitely preserved and are reproduced here for the first time. This volume takes readers on a journey through these remote sites, focusing especially on the amazing temple complex of Mangyu. The chapels, shrines, and dazzling murals presented here not only reveal much about late Mahayana Buddhism in India—its art, culture, and history—but also help fill a gap in our knowledge of the development of early Tibetan Vajrayana Buddhism. Indian Tibet Tibetan India: The Cultural Legacy of the Western Himalayas
Niyogi Books; Delhi, India; 2015; 9789383098934; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New; 28 x 24 Cm
Inspired by the first cultural expedition into the Western Himalayas by August Hermann Francke in 1909 which resulted in the region’s denomination as ‘Indian Tibet’, Peter van Ham has travelled for years in the long inaccessible Indo-Tibetan border regions after they were opened to the public in the beginning of the 1990’s. In secluded and remote high-altitude-valleys of breath-taking grandeur he documented some of the last refuges of Tibetan and early Indian culture and photographed people and the unique testimonies of their art, religion and architecture, culturally influenced by both of the region’s great neighbours—India and Tibet.With the aid of rare archival and contemporary textual and visual materials, many seen here for the first time ever, Peter van Ham draws a comprehensive picture of the fascinating history of the exploration of the present Indian border region towards Tibet. Knowledgably he describes the customs of its various inhabitants many of whom still follow their age-old traditions which at present are being stimulated and revived by the many exiled Tibetans that have found a new home in the region, thus designating it as ‘Tibetan India.’ With a message by the Dalai Lama and a preface by Michel Peissel.Printed Pages: 244 with Numerous colour illustrations & 2 maps. 105618

Tabo: Gods of Light: The Indo-Tibetan Masterpiece
Hirmer Verlag; Germany; 978-3-7774-2326; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New; 28 x 28 Cm
The monastery of Tabo is located in the north-Indian region of the Himalayas. Founded in 996 AD, it is the oldest temple complex in the Tibetan cultural area to have been preserved in its original state. Tabo’s main temple, the Temple of the Enlightened Gods, is a unique gesamtkunstwerk. Sculptures and paintings dating back one thousand years that were executed in an incomparably delicate style, probably by Indian artists, together form a sort of horizontal walkable mandala. Special permission was granted to Peter van Ham so that he could take photographs of the temple’s halls, which are not accessible to the public. The volume presents these breath-taking photographs and describes in detail the entire gamut of Tibetan artistic styles. Printed Pages: 308 with 405 colour illustrations and 2 fold-outs. 039129

Principles of Ethics
New Bharatiya Book Corporation; Delhi, India; 2001; 8187418273; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New;
The present work has grown out of lectures delivered to my pupils. It is thus adapted to the requirements of students preparing for the Examination in Philosophy. Hence, the topics have been arranged in it, as far as possible, according to the syllabus fixed for that examination. Of the text-books on Ethics commonly used by students, some are too sketchy to be of much use to them; others, again, are too bulky and not suited to their capacity. This Book tries to overcome these defects. It is written in a plain style and covers the entire ground included in the syllabus. But, though intended mainly for the use of students, it is not a book of the sort that encourages cramming or superficiality. It tries to give as comprehensive view of each topic as is permitted by its limited space.Writing from the Idealistic stand-point, I am deeply indebted to the recent writers of the Idealistic school, whose works I have freely consulted. The treatment, however, is, in the main, independent. I may add here that I have generally mentioned in proper places the names of the writers consulted or quoted, so far as I have been able to remember them.Printed Pages: 354. 104077

21744 Phanishwar Nath Renu; Translated from Hindi By Satti Khanna
Freed from Disgrace: Kalankmukti
Oxford University Press; New Delhi, India; 2006; 0195685997; First Edition; Hard Cover; New; New;
Not since Premchand has any writer in Hindi penetrated the experience of the rural poor with as much empathy as has Phanishwar Nath Renu. In his writing, he juxtaposes the roles of different members of a small-town community to create the effect of a many-layered life, moving from one story to another, creating a vibrant and complex narrative. Freed from Disgrace, his third novel, is set not in the countryside but in the capital city of Patna. The world of the novel is one of harsh contrary energies in the lives of women. Bela, a former freedom fighter, administers a hostel for working women in the district of Bankipur. Betrayals and disappointment in love have deepened her selflessness, and she refuses to yield to a corrupt secretary of the board of trustees who wants to use the young boarders for her personal advancement in influencing government officials. In the countryside of Renu’s novels, the dynamism of young pioneers wins out. In the city, the outcome is uncertain. Government officials in the new India have inherited privileges without undergoing education of spirit. Their motto is not the proclaimed motto of the new country: Truth Alone Prevails, but instead, its perversion. In such darkness, the superintendent of the working women’s hostel struggles for light. Freed from Disgrace is Renu’s passionate account of that struggle. Renu skilfully condenses each character in a few lines of dialogue while the reader is left to himself or herself to discover the complexity of the novel. The bustle of life, dialect, folk song and high diction has few equals in Hindi literature. 019671

Salt of the Earth: The Story of Tata Chemicals
Westland Limited; New Delhi, India; 9789384030759; Softcover; New;
From its birth in a hostile setting, through the struggles that have defined its existence to the success it has secured in the face of formidable odds, the history of Tata chemicals is rich in incident and endeavor, sacrifice and fortitude. This intimate and illuminating chronicle of a singularly resilient enterprise narrates that history and the gallant efforts of the people who shaped it. Salt of the earth tells the story of how Tata chemicals emerged from the toil and despair of its early years to reach and breach new frontiers in its chosen industry and then beyond-in the manufacturing of soda ash and other alkalis, in the production of fertilizers and by creating a trusted food brand. This is also the story of a company that has progressed and prospered by staying true to the legacy of its founders and the traditions and tenets of the Tata group and by committing itself to the cause of the communities in which it operates.With a substantial presence in four continents, leadership positions in different business segments and the character and potential to touch yet greater heights, Tata chemicals is poised to add new chapters to a saga 75 years in the making. The past will inform and influence that future. 109699

Fundamentals of Signals and Systems: A Building Block Approach
Cambridge University Press; Cambridge, UK; 2006; 0521711401; First Edition; Paperback; New; 247 x 174 Mm
This innovative textbook provides a solid foundation in both signal processing and systems modeling using a building block approach. The authors show how to construct signals from fundamental building blocks (or basis functions), and demonstrate a range of powerful design and simulation techniques in Matlab, recognizing that signal data are usually received in discrete samples, regardless of whether the underlying system is discrete or continuous in nature. The book begins with key concepts such as the orthogonality principle and the discrete Fourier transform. Using the building block approach as a unifying principle, the modeling, analysis and design of electrical and mechanical systems are then covered, using various real-world examples. The design of finite impulse response filters is also described in detail. Containing many worked examples, homework exercises, and a range of Matlab laboratory exercises, this is an ideal textbook for undergraduate students of engineering, computer science, physics, and other disciplines. Contents 1. Introduction to signals and systems 2. Constructing signals from building blocks 3. Sampling and data acquisition 4. Lumped element modeling of mechanical systems 5. Lumped element modeling of electrical systems 6. Solution to differential equations 7. Input-output relationships using frequency response 8. Digital signal processing (DSP) 9. Applications 10. Summary Laboratory exercises. Printed Pages: 460 with 349 line figures, 19 tables, and 117 exercises. 027725

History of the Christian Church, 7 Vols
Christian World Imprints/B.R. Publishing Corporation; New Delhi, India; 2016; 9789351480853; Hardcover; New; New;
History of the Christian Church brings out a captivating blend of human history and God's providence. This realistically depicting work digs out those important aspects that are actually missing in modern historical narratives. Moreover, the facts and figures for each period of History are backed by copious footnotes and scriptural references. The pragmatic outlook scrupulously frames out a roadmap to help the Church in knowing, where they were and where they have to move ahead.The author starts with an examination of the preparation for Christianity in Judaism and the heathen world. The expedition moves on to enshrine intermediate phases of this historical compendium, i.e., Nicene Christianity, Mediaeval Christianity, and Middle Ages. In its concluding section, it sets forth a general introduction to modern church history and a thorough analysis of the fruitful era of the Reformation, thereby encapsulating Protestant and Calvinistic movements started by Martin Luther, Huldreich Zwingli and John Calvin; in Germany and Switzerland to the close of the 16th century. The Book of Silk
Thames & Hudson; London, UK; 1993; 0500236623; First Edition; Hardcover; Very Good; Very Good; 25 x 31 Cm
The Book of Silk tells the rich history of this remarkable material through five millennia, reproducing hundreds of fabrics, furnishings and garments from all parts of the world. From ancient China, where the secret of reeling silkworm cocoons was first discovered, the narrative leads by the legendary Silk Routes to Byzantium and the Islamic world, to Ottoman Turkey and India - and on to the Renaissance, and the baroque and rococo silks of western Christendom. In modern times the fashion industry yields a wonderful array of designs, from Fortuny and Balenciaga, Poiret and Schiaparelli. At every stage, silk's status as the most prized fabric of all ensured that it drew the most creative talents of every period, from anonymous Chinese masters to the celebrated couturiers of France and Italy. A dazzling selection of illustrations, many drawn from private collections, reveals silk's omnipresence in couture and decoration, carpets, embroidery and even painting. Complete with a detailed reference section that includes terms and technical processes, collecting and care, galleries and museums, and a bibliography, The Book of Silk will appeal to anyone interested in history, fashion, beauty and textiles.
