A Fighting Spirit: Selected Writings of Ashoka Gupta
Niyogi Books; New Delhi, India; 2012; 9789381523650; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New; 16 x 24 Cm
An active career spanning seven decades is unusual. And to describe Ashoka Gupta (1912-2008) simply as a social worker is not enough. Till the last day of her life, she was a dynamo, who generated exhilaration and energy in those around her. In this volume, we have tried to capture her personality through her own writings and through the recollections of others. The earliest piece by her was published in 1945, the last written in 2004. They vividly convey the ethos of the timesthe terrible 1940s, through war, famine, riots, and Partitionsituations when actions spoke more strongly than words. The tragedy of Partition was overtaken by the excitement and anticipation of nation-building. For Ashoka Gupta the ideals of the Indian constitution were realistic, and needed to be strengthened by ceaseless hands-on work at the grassroots. Twenty years later, she stood by her husband to battle the injustices done to the refugees from East Pakistan who had migrated in the 1960s and were being rehabilitated in the wilderness called Dandakaranya. This book will be of value to scholars of history, sociology and womens studies, for those working on Mahatma Gandhi, on communitarian relations, on legislation pertaining to women, and on institutional frameworks, particularly the All-India Womens Conference.Printed Pages: 192. 037353

KW Publishers; New Delhi, India; 2011; 9789380502823; First Edition; Softcover; New;
Indian Ocean Region is fast becoming a competing ground between regional and extra-regional powers. The option for India is to either retain strategic autonomy by building hard power or allow the space to be encroached upon by the extra-regional powers. Global community is aware of the strategic importance of India in the Indian Ocean Region and recognises the fact that partnership with India is imperative to shape the future of this region. It is an obligation that India begins to look at IOR as a strategic strength which needs to be further consolidated and complemented by building military capability with ‘regional outlook’. The book addresses various issues with regard to capability building and employment of such a military power to protect national strategic interests and its obligation towards regional allies. 21811 Narendra Kohli
Hunger and Other Stories
Hind Pocket Books; New Delhi, India; 812161371X; Softcover; New;
These thirteen short stories by Narendra Kohli, one of the most prominent and best selling Hindi writers of modern times, coruscate with brilliance. These short stories have been written between 1965 and 1972 when the nascent Indian economy was grappling with basic concerns like providing a decent standard of living to the burgeoning large middle class, among others. Globalisation and technology have changed the way most of India lives. However, these short stories have a timeless appeal. They could have been written anytime, anywhere.Hunger, addiction, love, frustration, old age, withered youth, the agony of personal loss in times of war, a mind besieged with thoughts before an impending commitment...these are basic human subjects. Kohli strikes an instant chord with his effortless narrative that comes straight to the heart of the story.Kohli’s explorations into the inner world packs his work with remarkable depth. He easily gets the reader engrossed in simple prose that stands out for its depth of understanding of timeless human predicaments and emotions.Narendra Kohli is widely acclaimed as the most prominent Hindi language author of modern times. His contribution to Hindi literature is often compared to the legendary writer Premchand, though critics believe his impact to be more significant and long-lasting than the latter. Kohli is the unprecedented master of exploring human relationships. His portrayal of highly complex characters covers a wide range — from householders to mental wrecks. His works also assert the timeless nature of the human mind and behaviour. In the world of literature, he occupies the same place as Leo Tolstoy. 109931

Niyogi Books; New Delhi, India; 2017; 8193393562; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New; 14 x 22 Cm
A Bonsai Tree is not a memoir; it is an autobiography. Memoir is a selective slice of life focused to advantage; autobiography is the whole messy life as it unfolded. It continues as a narrative of India through the prism of one life. Post-Partition hardship and singular effort launches the author on a coveted career. Hilarious snippets of a young bumbling couple keep you glued to the book. The scenario then changes to an epic private battle with the 'bottled devil'.Narendra Luther has hitherto written about others. Here he tells you his own gripping story with his trademark wit, optimism and unusual candour. Looking back, he finds a pattern emerging out of a chequered life, bringing him to questions of destiny. Origin of Brahmi Script: The Beginning of Alphabet in India (Art, Architecture Painting Grantha)
Chowkhamba Sanskrit Series Office; Varanasi, India; 1980; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New;
Earliest written records of India in the historical period, Asokan inscriptions hold the key to the story of writing in this country. These epigraphs have been written in Greek, Aramaic, Kharosthi, and Brahmi. Among these the Origins of the first three scripts are not disputed but the beginnings of Brahmi elude the grasp of historians. Majority of western scholars derive Brahmi's origin from one of these scripts-Hieratic, cuneiform, Phoenician, Aramaic and Kharosthi. A Few foreign scholars and most of the Indian scholars believe in its indigenous origin. The author of the present work has critically reviewed and scrutinised the existing views and shown convincingly a correlation between the pre-existing geometrical forms and later signs of the Brahmi script. He has illustrated with charts that most of the letters of Brahmi alphabet betray very close resemblance with geometrical forms such as semi-circle, circle, ellipse, cycloid, triangle, angle and quadrangle etc. Each letter of the Brahmi Script has been discussed here in greater detail than ever before and its origin from geometrical signs clearly demonstrated. Besides, The Author has brought out for the first time numerous new forms of Asokan letters originating from geometrical signs, which were hitherto unknown or unnoticed. The work on the whole is marked out for originality, clarity, sound scholarship and critical acumen of the author. The Book is bound to benefit the general readers as well as researchers in the field. Printed Pages: 198. 100816

Paintings of Bundelkhand: Some Remembered, Some Forgotten, Some not yet Discovered
D.K. Printworld (P) Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2016; 8124608458; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New; 23 x 31 Cm
This volume, a visual journey, through its meticulous deliberations on the wall paintings and miniature paintings of Bundelkhand makes us reminisce the footfalls of valiant Bundella kings, ankle bells of elegant court-dancers, evocative poetry of mahakavi Kesvadas and the brilliant artistic skills of mural painters and many other historical events. These find their excellent expressions beyond the palaces of Orchha and Datia, and in many jagirs and thikanas such as Rehali, Madanpur, Chhatarpur, Narsinghgarh, Ajayagarh, Todi Fatehpur, Samthar, Jhansi and Rannod as well. A glimpse of Malwa painting is a value-add.The murals, a living art, more democratic and decidedly popular, were the artistic idiom of Bundelkhand. It was art for the raja and the praja, depicting not only Puranic stories, but also the regal affairs and the day-to-day life of ordinary people.Despite the fact that time, the vicissitudes of weather and vandalism have taken their toll on the murals, a cultivated aesthete can restore life in them. The book candidly reminds us a truth: The paintings of Bundelkhand are half remembered, half forgotten and many yet to be discovered.Thus, this book should inspire art connoisseurs, art historians, art students, and laymen alike, paving the way for further researches and studies on the forgotten legacies of Bundelkhand. Climate Change and Treats to Human Security
Kalpaz Publications/Gyan Books Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2014; 9789351280156; Hardcover; New; New;
The Westphalian paradigm of state as a hard shelled political and territorial boundary to impregnate all those who have been walled in as citizens with an impenetrable security shield is no longer impervious and insensitive to the volley of threats hurled at them by the emerging non-traditional and non-state sources. One of such sources of threats remaining menacing to the people is the climate change with its apocalyptic consequences not centuries ago foreseen or predictably crafted within the contours of state security and its associated military establishment. The utter inadequacy and increasing irrelevance of weapons however lethal and sophisticated may be, in the face of climate change has challenged the narrow, reductionist, linear and one directional state centric security but also has laid the building block for redefining security that moves beyond the state down to the level of every single individual that can be comprehensively christened as human security. Yet one could argue with equal plausibility that the wrong end of a smokestack can be as much of a security threat to humans as the barrel of a gun. This book compiled of a sheaf of articles written from various perspectives mostly focuses on the threats the climate change poses to human security.Printed Pages: 336. 106198

A Study of Buddhist Medicine and Surgery in Gandhara, Vol. XI
Motilal Banarsidass Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2011; 8120835026; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New;
This study approaches Buddhist Medicine and Surgery by comparing the medico-social events, people who were involved in it and the tools they used; from mainly three civilisations of contemporary period, the Greeks, Romans and Buddhists who prospered in Gandhara. The interactions of all three people for long periods in history are well documented; the study raises the obviously intriguing question why in some areas they influenced each other markedly but not at all in others. No doubt it is the first study on the subject and a number of aspects brought up for discussion may be new and original altogether. This study might raise few issues owing to looking at events from different perspectives because much of the history has no validity of its chronology and the mist of mythology is too thick. The narrative endeavours to engage support from reliable references and quotes from dependable sources.Printed Pages: 213. 102703

Life in Peace and Conflict: Indigeneity and State in the Chittagong Hill Tracts
Orient BlackSwan; New Delhi, India; 2017; 9789386296818; Hardcover; New; New;
Across the world, the modern nation-state has paid little attention to indigenous people, and excluded them from the mainstream development process. The state has even deprived indigenous people of their legitimate claims to land, civil rights and legal recognition of their ethnic identity. Life in Peace and Conflict is a collection of nine essays, many of which are empirically grounded, on the conflict and peace-building measures between various indigenous groups and the state in the Chittagong Hill Tracts (CHT) of Bangladesh.Home to eleven indigenous groups of people collectively known as the Pahari, the CHT lies at the crossroads of South and Southeast Asia, and shares borders with Myanmar and the Indian Northeast. As such, it is geo-politically vital in South Asia. The policies of both the colonial and postcolonial states, which privileged the dominant Bengali community over the Pahari, resulted in violent conflict. After years of armed conflict, a ‘peace accord’ was officially signed in 1997 between the State and the representatives of indigenous Pahari people. Two decades on, however, peace still eludes the CHT—the region is still apparently militarised, cross-border insurgency continues to haunt Indo-Bangladesh relations, and the influx of Rohingya refugees from Myanmar has complicated an already fraught landscape.While the book discusses the politics of indigeneity, it also documents everyday forms of discrimination and resistance among dispossessed communities, and critiques the ‘developmental’ efforts of international agencies and NGOs to resolve conflict in an understudied region of the world.Students and scholars of political science, international relations, anthropology, sociology, South Asian studies, public administration and development studies will find this book useful. The Dialogue of Pyaasa: Guru Dutt's Immortal Classic (with DVD)
Om Books Intenational; New Delhi, India; 2011; 9789380070537; First Edition; Paperback with a DVD; New;
Great films come from great writing and the aim of The Dialogue of Pyaasa, Guru Dutt’s Immortal Classic is to preserve in book form the film’s complete dialogue by Abrar Alvi and songs/poems by Sahir Ludhianvi. These are presented in Hindi, Urdu and Romanised scripts. Generously illustrated, the dialogue is also accompanied by an English translation, introduction and extensive commentary by Nasreen Munni Kabir. First-rate screenwriter, Abrar Alvi has created superb scenes and subtle lines. Skilled in giving personality to every Pyaasa character, Alvi’s flair for lived-in expression turns Guru Dutt as Vijay or Johnny Walker as Abdul Sattar into real people. Pyaasa’s other excellent writing comes from Sahir Ludhianvi’s sublime songs and poetry. This master Urdu poet has been widely acknowledged for elevating the film songs to a poetic form and this is in full evidence in the film. Sahir’s Marxist ideology, brilliant imagination and deep understanding of human emotions are the soul of Pyaasa. Guru Dutt’s Pyaasa is a stirring example of cinema’s power, enhanced by its marvellous dialogue and songs. Printed Pages: 240. 037394

Oxford University Press; New Delhi, India; 2005; 019567233X; New Edition; Paperback; New; New; 19 Cms x 26 Cms
...Guru Dutt was a master. See the way he handled the camera, the actors and the lighting...The black and white movies always managed to capture the mood. Maybe the fascination for Guru Dutt has lasted for two reasons: his early death and that he made genuinely interesting films. If you see Pyaasa or Sahib Bibi aur Ghulam, the subjects are contemporary, it's not like, "tabhi hota tha abhi nahin. (That was the old days, it never happens now.)" Guru Dutt's films were about human emotions and they don't change.' -- Farhan Akhtar, Film Director Nasreen Munni Kabir traces the life of this gifted and unusual man through studies of his films and many interviews with his family, friends, and work colleagues. The book describes in careful detail the making of such classics as Pyaasa, Kaagaz ke Phool , and Sahib Bibi aur Ghulam, providing invaluable information for those who know the quiet brilliance of Guru Dutt's films. Technicians, music directors, actors and others who worked closely with Guru Dutt, recount the experience of knowing him, and their memories uncover aspects that are less known. Originally published in 1996, this was one of the first in-depth studies of an Indian director, some years before 'Bollywood' and anything asociated with it had stirred curiosity across the world. This new edition with appealing visuals, brings to life Guru Dutt's vivid and complex personality through observations on his films and through the voices of the many who knew him. Complete with photographs and a filmography, this book is a must-have for all cinephiles, especially the general reader and the student interested in Indian cinema. Writing Down the Bones: Freeing the Writer Within
Shambhala Publication; New Delhi, India; 161180308X; Softcover; New;
For more than thirty years Natalie Goldberg has been challenging and cheering on writers with her books and workshops. In her groundbreaking first book, she brings together Zen meditation and writing in a new way. Writing practice, as she calls it, is no different from other forms of Zen practice—“it is backed by two thousand years of studying the mind.”This thirtieth-anniversary edition includes new forewords by Julia Cameron and Bill Addison. It also includes a new preface in which Goldberg reflects on the enduring quality of the teachings here. She writes, “What have I learned about writing over these thirty years? I’ve written fourteen books, and it’s the practice here in Bones that is the foundation, sustaining and building my writing voice, that keeps me honest, teaches me how to endure the hard times and how to drop below discursive thinking, to taste the real meat of our minds and the life around us.” Printed Pages: 224. 112785

The Word of the Guru: The Life and Teachings of Guru Narayana
D.K. Printworld (P) Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2003; 8124602417; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New; 15 x 23 Cm
Millions of people have been deeply affected by the life and teachings of the Guru Narayana, who is the central figure of this book. This is a biography, not only of the Guru Narayana, but of Guruhood itself. Religions and philosophies have their sources in such men, and the aim here is to clarify this fact, without being sentimental or sensational. In doing so, many hitherto baffling enigmas of Indian life are given a rational explanation for the first time. Nataraja Guru, the disciple-successor of the Narayana Guru, uses the contemplative discipline which was characteristic of the Guru Narayana, and brings the Advaita Vedanta method into the forefront of global thought as understood today, introducing a new science of Wisdom-Dialectics. Nataraja Guru's scheme of correlation between science and mysticism amounts to an epochal advance in philosophy. This book represents the voice of the Guru. The Word of the Guru provides a quantity of original material for study, including fully annotated and carefully translated writings of Guru Narayana. It describes the physical and psychological conditions of South India with great brilliance. The spirituality of India is set forth here in its clearest terms, unambiguous and shorn of all limiting frontiers, suitable for readers in all parts of the world.Printed Pages: 471 with 8 coloured & 4 b/w illustrations. 100432

Experiencing One-World
D.K. Printworld (P) Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2009; 8124605289; First Edition; Softcover; New; 15 x 22 Cm
Is 'One World' a Utopian ideal? Or just a dream in a world which today, more than ever before, stays riven by parochial, deep-rooted barriers : nationalistic, ethnic, religious, linguistic and many other, leave alone a whole diversity of divisive 'isms'? An eminent exponent of Vedantic philosophy here examines this question afresh to suggest that the one-world dream could become a reality, if Man only learnt to cultivate the unitive vision. Essentially a vital part of Nataraja Guru's globally wide educational programme, Experiencing One-World seeks to evolve "one-world consciousness" that tunes Man to look beyond the trees to stars, to turn on his mind to world fraternity, and to discern the language of audiovisual arts and the charm of poetry -- as, for instance, is manifest in the world of architecture and music. Spelling out Nataraja Guru's view of One-World that embraces his long-contemplated perspectives on one-world government, one-world economics, world education, one religion, unified sciences and a language of unified sciences, the book highlights the specialties of well-groomed unitive consciousness of a world citizen, who wishes not only to restructure the existing scheme of things, but also to see mankind live a better life -- and with dignity.Printed Pages: 396. 100408

The Devil and Demonism in Early Modern England
Cambridge University Press; Cambridge, UK; 2006; 0521802369; First Edition; Hardcover; Brand New; Brand New; 228 x 152 Mm
An original book examining the concept of the Devil in English culture between the Reformation and the end of the English Civil War. Nathan Johnstone looks at the ways in which beliefs about the nature of the Devil and his power in human affairs changed as a consequence of the Reformation, and its impact on religious, literary and political culture. He moves away from the established focus on demonology as a component of the belief in witchcraft and examines a wide range of religious and political milieux, such as practical divinity, the interiority of Puritan godliness, anti-popery, polemic and propaganda, and popular culture. The concept of the Devil which emerged from the Reformation had a profound impact on the beliefs and practices of committed Protestants, but it also influenced both the political debates of the reigns of Elizabeth I, James I and Charles I, and in popular culture more widely. • Focuses on a neglected yet fascinating area of early modern history • Challenges traditional beliefs and conceptions about the Devil • Examines demonology within the wider political, social, cultural and religious history of early modern England Contents Introduction; 1. The synagogue of Satan: anti-catholicism, false doctrine and the construction of contrariety; 2. Temptation: the protestant dynamic of diabolic agency and the resurgence of clerical mediation; 3. Satan and the godly in early modern England; 4. Incarnate devils: crime narratives, demonization and audience empathy; 5. 'What concord hath Christ with Belial': de facto satanism and the temptation of the body politic, 1570–1640; 6. 'Grand Pluto's progress through Great Britaine': the civil war and the zenith of satanic politics; 7. 'The Devil's Alpha and Omega': Temptation at the cutting edge of faith in the civil war and the interregnum. Printed Pages: 350. 018629

An Imperial Idyll: Finland in Russian Travelogues (1810-1860)
Bookstore Tiedekirja; Finland; 2016; 9516534139; New;
At the beginning of the nineteenth century, the Russian nobility discovered the pristine landscapes of Finland. Travelling from St. Petersburg, they described the territory newly annexed to the Empire as a Northern Arcadia, a rural haven for their body and soul, while Finns were seen as peaceful “children of nature”, humble and honest. How did these idyllic images of Finland develop? More particularly, what was the value of these perceptions in the Russian imperial context? Based on published travel accounts, this An Imperial Idyll investigates the process through which Russians came to describe and depict Finland as part of their Empire. As a historical survey of the construction of Russian representations of Finland, it sheds new light on familiar places such as Imatra, Helsinki, or the Saimaa Canal by analyzing their creation as remarkable sites as a component of Russian imperialism.
