South Indian Neolithic Culture
Bharatiya Kala Prakashan; Delhi, India; 2007; 8180901904; Hardcover; New; New;
The book presents a systematic and scientific study of South Indian Neolithic culture in the Kadapa region of Andhra Pradesh carried out through explorations (village-to-village survey) and section-scrapings at select sites by using ecological and ethnographic analogy as parameters in order to reconstruct the cultural process of human adaptation in the Central Pennar Basin during 2nd Millennium B.C. The present region of research was a desideratum in view of the expansion of Southern Neolithic Culture with it`s distinctive characteristic features and hence has been designed with due regard to recent developments in the methodological applications in order to use the potentialities of material culture for a better understanding of the system of Neolithic settlements. The study was done oh the basis off new discoveries in the region, by using earlier finds, so as to glean the complete picture of Neolithic cultural phase. However, it not only lead to the evidence of hunter-gatherer communities, i.e., Mesolithic culture, prior to Neolithic cultural phase, but also Megalithic and Early historic cultures as a continual occupation of human populations along the banks of the existing river system. All the sites are found in a stratified, primary context which enabled the author to understand the development of ancient civilizations in the region. It is a micro regional study in view of Neolithic cultural phase where more emphasis was given to settlement and subsistence pattern besides dealing with outlines of Mesolithic, Megalithic and Early historic cultures. The distribution of Neolithic sites was done in relation to their topographical setting against the background of ecological resources and hence established the Man-Land relationship during Neolithic period. To achieve this objective an ethno-archaeological approach was adopted among Kuruba community, a local agro-pastoralists, whose settlement, subsistence and material culture served as the best analogy in view of agro-pastoral economy in the Central Pennar Basin. CONTENTS: Foreword; Preface; 1. Introduction 2. Geographical Background 3. Present Explorations and Section-Scrapings in the Region 4. Analysis of Neolithic Cultural and Biological Materials 5. The Kurubas : An Ethnoarchaeological Study 6. A settlement System Model of the Neolithic Culture of the Central Pennar Basin Printed Pages: 324. 110709

A Handsome Man
Abhinav Publications/Kaveri Books; New Delhi, India; 8170173965; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New;
"It is a brilliant novel embodying ethos of modern India, an attempt to catch the spirit of the age. Before the Independence of the country, there was a spontaneous upsurge of patriotic enthusiasm and fervour, a keenness to realise the dream of Ramrajya, of prosperity and justice for all and uplift of the poor. However, the dreams seem to vanish away in the post independence era, as self-interest dominates, corruption spreads, rat-race for gettingeasy money grows, and in the process familial relations shrink and get dried up. 107899

"As a creative artist, P.C.K. Prem has tremendous potential and vitality. In his writings, he not only offers an expose of our life in its shocking shallowness or outward show but also provides deep down a philosophical prop or basis to sustain our life. He is neither a pessimist nor an optimist. All along, his earnest endeavour is to hold mirror to life and in the process, to unravel the mystery of existence. His works, long as well as short, contain a rich element of seriousness, implicit irony and candour. 107966

China's Quest for Global Dominance: Reality or Myth
Vij Books India Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2011; 9789380177816; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New;
Today, the whole world is watching China with great interest and that includes India. China has been termed – a threat, a challenge, an opportunity, a concern, a competitor, the next superpower, a global player and many more things. It depends, who is looking at it and from where? In 2009, United Service Institution (USI) of India decided to commence a five years study programme on China. Towards that end, we held the National Security Seminar 2009 titled ‘Rising China – Opportunity or Strategic Challenge’ on 25-26 November 2009. Its proceedings have been published in the form of a book.Printed Pages: 264. 103195

Architecture of Manasara (Translated from Original Sanskrit Text), 2 Vols
New Bharatiya Book Corporation; New Delhi, India; 2010; 8183151337; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New;
Architecture of Manasara is an English version of a Sanskrit text of that name edited, with critical notes, for the first time by the writer. Except one, all other manuscripts are fragmentary and none contains any commentary, drawings, diagrams or sketches. The buildings of the time, religious, military, or residential, do not appear to exist in their entirety for a ready reference. Owing to the defective nature of the text, which has been shown elsewhere, one can hardly be perfectly sure of the interpretation. An elaborate effort, involving great expenditure of time, money, and convenience, was made to get into contact with the so-called traditional builders in the south, in the Orissan countries, in the Indian States of Rajputana, Central India, Gujarat, Bombay, in the Frontier Provinces and in the Hill States, in company with trained and experienced engineers, architects, and interpreters, in the vain hope of getting some light from salats. These salats are stated to build in accordance with an ancient tradition which, they claim, to have inherited orally in some cases, but mostly from some fragmentary manuscripts that they have frequently failed to interpret. None knows more clearly than myself what imperfections are to be found in this first attempt at translating such an imperfect text on such highly technical subjects. I owe it, therefore, to the reader to indicate the general method I have closely followed. In the translation of the Text I have endeavored to adhere as closely as possible to the language of the original. It has consistently been my aim to reproduce the bare meaning of the Manasara, and to avoid, as far as can be done, taking liberties with the language in order to bring out meaning other than what the most obvious and ordinary natural interpretation would suggest. 104025

Sacred Complex of Budhi Santani: Anthropological Approach to Study Hindu Civilization
Concept Publishing Company Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2003; 8180690490; Hardcover; New; New;
Several scholars in India and abroad have used the sacred complex model of Prof. L.P. Vidyarthi to study the nature and process of compromise and cooperation among various faiths, sects and traditions of Hindu civilization as reflected in different Hindu places of pilgrimage. This book has revealed the way the sacred complex model can be applicable to a single dominant shrine, as a nexus of ritual activities, economic cooperation and social ties, in understanding the characteristics of Hindu civilization. The author has used sacred complex as a conflux of seven elements comprising sacred geography, sacred performances, sacred specialists, sacred sacrifices, sacred sacrifices, sacred symbols and sacred beliefs, and has specifically attempted to explore the linkage of local pattern of Hindu social organization with the organization of sacred performances. The facts delineated in the book will be helpful to the researchers and educationists working on Hindu civilization. Printed Pages: 450. 112125

Goddesses in Ancient India
Abhinav Publications/Kaveri Books; New Delhi, India; 8170171849; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New;
Dr. Agrawala’s present work largely represents his Ph.D. thesis (approved by the Banaras Hindu University) in a revised up-to-date form. He has brought out a most comprehensive and thorough analysis of the material on the worship of goddesses in the proto-historic and Vedic periods of India. A vast amount of archaeological evidence is carefully sifted and analysed by him in a truer cultic perspective as throwing new light on the role of mother-goddesses in the protohistoric cultures ranging from small agricultural communities of Baluchistan foothills to the highly developed Harappans. Dr. Agrawala has also identified and discussed in a systematic manner varied motifs and concepts of fertility cultus in the Rgveda and later Vedic texts which were subsequently formulated into definite images, personifications and attributes. He has marshalled in a fully objective treatment all those references in the Vedic literature that go now to reveal numerous fresh aspects of this hitherto unexplored subject. One is able indeed to see through the present work how the Rgvedic goddesses,mostly abstractions, later on assumed mythical definitions in the pantheon and how the folk culture of India exercised its far-reaching influences on higher priestly religion not only by contributing its own share of goddesses but also through their more concrete identification with the already existing ones in myths and cult rituals. Historical Geography of Madhya Pradesh: From Early Records (Second Edition)
Motilal Banarsidass Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2010; 8120833945; Second Edition; Hardcover; New; New;
Historical Geography of Madhya Pradesh presents some complicated problems which require a systematic study. Sri Bhattacharyya has not only utilised geographical materials contained in the epics, the Puranas and Buddhist and Jaina literature but has also judiciously used inscriptional evidences and the accounts left by travellers. He has further supplemented his information by co-ordinating with the present day topography of the land. Divided into seven chapters, in a systematic manner-the Historical Background, The Central Provinces and Madhya Pradesh, The Mountain System, The River System, Territories and Districts, Capitals, Cities and Towns, Villages and Routes-the work gives a clear picture of the early historical geography of Madhya Pradesh. Copious documentation of references to primary and modern sources, bibliography, index and Maps enhance the value of the book.Printed Pages:318. 102520

Firepower 2030
KW Publishers; New Delhi, India; 2013; 9789381904800; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New;
Warfare quintessentially comprises Firepower and Manoeuvre. Terrain and the nuclear overhang restrict manoeuvre in our theatre of operations.The constituents of Firepower are platforms with ammunition, which can deliver from five dimensions; Land, Air, Surface of the sea, below the surface of the sea and possibly in times to come Outer Space. These are Small Arms, Guns, Mortars, Rockets of Artillery, Tanks, Aircrafts, Missiles, Unmanned Combat Aerial Vehicles (UCAVs), Armed Helicopters, Submarines and in future possibly stations in Outer Space. The ammunition which is the payload is the most important element of Firepower. Combination of platforms with ammunition results in devastating Firepower which paves the way for victory.The constituents enable us in a full spectrum conflict to undertake net centric operations. The conflicts visualised could be Land operations in a Counter Insurgency situation against non state actors, Air Land operations in a counter insurgency operation or a conventional conflict, Air operations for Counter Air, Air Defence, Sea operations for sea control or denial, Sea Land operations to undertake Amphibious operations, Air Sea operations between two opposing naval task forces and possibly by 2030 operations involving Outer Space. In these conflicts victory would be attained by ensuring Asymmetries of Firepower.Printed Pages: 140. 104299

The reader will find here an account of how the genesis of the monsoon was traced with constant level balloons during the Monsoon Experiment of 1979: how weather satellites are used to locate cyclonic storms over the Indian ocean, and, finally, how the climate of the Rajasthan desert may be made more friendly. Understanding Indian Art
Aryan Books International; New Delhi, India; 2014; 817305519X; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New; 22 x 28 Cm
The present volume generates a liaison between the past and present. It reveals a dignified unity in Indian art which regulates its future. An appraisal of the art of India since ancient times with a case study of S.P. Verma's innovations and experiments, is a novel introduction to an ingenious artist-a very controlled creative painter and one of the India's senior scholars of Mughal painting. The book illumines the values and concerns that shaped attitudes to creative activity and provides an accessible unfolding of valuable Indian traditions. It entrusts the real ferment of contemporary art in India which seems to lie in its diversity and vitality. Here worthiness of art works is interpreted in terms of an aesthetic and ingenuity. Verma's collage-cum-graphic art generates a distinct feasible technique with a typical mode of communication which imprints his addition to the contemporaneous art. Indian art embedded with respect for spirituality is infused with ideas and abstractions. Modern Indian art, too, is occupied with it, and Verma is not an exception to it. The present book illuminated with 160 plates in colour and black-and-white is a sumptuous work of art-an endowment for all of us. The textual outlines conserve the essential contours of the historical evolution of Indian art and familiarize the reader with the masterpieces of the heritage which have been illustrated to the maximum extent possible. The selection of illustrations, like the richest cream at the top of the milk, is the intense essence of their culture, to be savoured slowly and completely. Everyone can enjoy their virtuosity and naturalism; but the more one learns about India, the more nourishing the paintings. In this book, Ghosh has tried to open wide the Indian door. The volume will be of great value to anyone who wishes to understand the composite cultural history of India-a matter of immediate importance. This book is significant for the wide appeal it commands-it will not only interest students of cultural studies, but also art historians and connoisseurs of art, as well as by anyone interested in Indian art. Ethics and Society: An Essay in Applied Ethics
Concept Publishing Company Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2008; 8180695239; Hardcover; New; New;
The book examines the nature of relation between ethics and society. It shows how ethical theories can be fruitfully applied to practical life and can effectively deal with social problems like those concerning rights and justice, ethical issues in business and the professions as well as matters relating to the environment. Sketching the nature of applied ethics, it goes on to address to the theoretical issue of objectivity of ethical theories and moral reasons. Its distinctive contention that ethical theories and moral principles are necessary but defeasible runs consistently throughout the book and helps clarify the described problems and solutions thereof. Defeasibility of ethical theories goes hand in hand with the author`s plea for justified violations of ethical theories by a reasoned balance of the spirit of the principles and the demands of the situation. The author`s unique conception of moral personhood and his use of various strands of scholarship go a long way to buttress his argued contention of the relation of ethics to society. Ethics and Society will benefit teachers, students, researchers and all those interested in moral philosophy, social and political philosophy and practical ethics. Printed Pages: 246. 112071

Periodisation of History: Arunchal Pradesh
Kalpaz Publications/Gyan Books Pvt. Ltd; New Delhi, India; 2017; 9789351282198; Hardcover; New; New;
Periodisation in history has been the attempt to categorise historical time into discrete blocks. Historians broadly periodise Indian history into Hindu, Muslim and British or more appropriately Ancient, Medieval and Modern basically on the history of the Northern India with its geographical thrust on the Ganges valley. Such rigors of periodisation hardly justify within their fold the movement of regional history.The present investigation has been an attempt to carry out research on how best the regional history with reference to Arunachal Pradesh stands justified to such historical narratives. It focuses on a sketchy description of history of the origin of the inhabitant-tribes; history seen through social and political development; Ahom and British colonial interests over the areas; sources-led history; periodisation vs. history of Arunachal Pradesh citing conjectures and justifying their relevant reference and non-reference to such historical blocks. This work is expected to throw new light on periodisation- issue of the history of Arunachal Pradesh and ask readers to benefit. Printed Pages: 196. 111551

The Growth of the Novel in India
Abhinav Publications/Kaveri Books; New Delhi, India; 8170172594; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New;
"This collection of essays is meant to be a survey of the Novel in twelve major Indian languages during the period 1950 to 1980. While seeking to bring into focus the major trends and tendencies that characterise the growth of the Novel in these languages, the book atempts to explore the traditions being established in Indian Novel today and the new directions the Novel is likely to take in our languages. Gobinda Prasad Sarma convincingly shows how the Assamese Novel reflects the Assamese society and how experimentation with new techniques has widened the horizons of Assamese Novel: and K. Sivathamby, through a brilliant analysis of the interconnection between the societal factors and development of the Novel, portrays the rise of the Tamil Novel to new heights during the period. While I. K. Sharma shows how Hindi Novel has passed imperceptibly from the wonderland of fancy to the hinterland of society and the borderland of psyche’, Shyamala A. Narayan predicts a bright future for Indian English Novel on the basis of her assessment of such writers as Mulk Raj Anand, R. K. Narayan, Raja Rao, Manohar Malgonkar, Anita Desai and Arun Joshi. Jatindra Kumar Nayak brings out the tension in post-independent Oriya Novel between the idealism of the freedom struggle and the values of a commercial society; K. M. Tharakan describes the rich complexity hints at the possibility of a blend of post-modernist and leftist trends: and Ila Pathak shows how in Gujrati the traditional novel and the experimental novel are growing side by side. To Lila Ray, who traces the diverse trends in Bengali Novel, the most remarkable change is in the political novel; but to Prabhakar Rao, who describes the ‘wide range of exploration’ in Telugu Novel, the Telugu novelist ‘appears unable to rise above the mediocre’. Narinder Singh sees Punjabi Novel ‘at the take -off stage but gives a word of caution against the increasing use of colloquial dialect by the novelists; Seshagiri Rao traces the traditions established in Kannada Novel by the writers of the Navodaya period, Navya period and the Progressive Movement. Finally, Balachandra Nemade, in his inimitable style, anatomizes the positive and negative trends in the growth of Marathi Novel and gives a passionate call to revolutionise criticism and ‘cure Marathi of its present poverty of taste’. 107997

Personality: Issues In Assessments and the Projective Inventory Approach (Advances in Psychological Research in India Series No.5)
Concept Publishing Company Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2001; 8170229278; Hardcover; New; New;
This book is ostensible about psychological testing especially about personality testing. It is a critique of traditional thinking involved in is a critique of traditional thinking involved in the development of psychological testing. There has been attempts to start a rethink about fundamental issues such as the psychometric requirements, the social desirability effect, etc. There has also been a lot of use of statistics without trying to understand that, by itself, no statistics can even answer questions that are essentially psychological in nature. These are all analysed to develop a better alternative. A tentative of personality has been proposed to understand the social desirability effect. The concept of error (of fluctuation) has been construed as dynamism and has been used as providing an index of personality. Finally, the Projective Inventory as a better alternative to the measures available. This book is meant to challenge, provoke and force psychologists to think about these problems which is so very essential for this discipline to grow. Printed Pages: 170. 112558
