The Early Upanisads: Annotated text and Translation
Munshiram Manoharlal Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 1998; 8121508614; Reprint; Hard Cover; New; New; 16.5 Cms x 25 Cms
The Upanishads are the central scriptures of Hinduism. They represent some of the most important literary products in the history of Indian culture and religion, both because they played a critical role in the development of religious ideas in India and because they are our greatest source for the religious, social, and intellectual history of ancient India. Composed at a time of great social, economic, and religious change, the Upanisads document the transition from the archaic ritualism of the Veda into new religious ideas and institutions. In the Introduction Olivelle provides a solid background for understanding these ancient documents. He examines both the social background of the Upanisads and their literary history: authorship, chronology, and geographical provenance. He describes the ritual practices and terminology, Vedic conceptions of the cosmos and of human physiology and psychology. Finally, Olivelle examines the central Upanisadic preoccupation of finding interconnections among the diverse elements of the universe. The copious notes present some of the most present philological and historical research on this material and give the reader detailed explanations of difficult passages. The list of names identifies all the major individuals and geographical names occurring in the Upanisads. Two charts present the texts of the Vedic corpus and the plan of the Vedic sacrificial arena. A map shows the geographical areas mentioned in the Upanisads and the places where the different Upanisads may have been composed. A detailed index of subjects is also provided. The first major English translation of the ancient Upanisads for over half a century, Olivelle's work incorporates the most recent historical and philological scholarship and presents the Sanskrit text and translation on facing pages. All major variant readings and emendations suggested by scholars are given in the notes, which, together with an informative introduction and detailed explanatory notes, make this edition ideal for both specialists and students of Indian religion and culture. Renunciation in Hinduism: A Medieval Debate, 2 Vols
Motilal Banarsidass Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 1986; 3900271151; Softcover; New;
Debate was the life blood of Indian thought. It unleashed the creative insights of theologians and sharpened the logical acumen of philosophers. In Indian techniques and rules of debate were the forerunners of logic. They informed not only the conduct of live debates but also the style and argument of writing. What PHYLLIS GRANOFF says about Sri Harsa’s Khandanakhankakhadya and the commentaries on the Vedanta Sutra is applicable to much of the philosophical and theological writings of the Indian middle ages: they "maintain their strong links with the tradition of oral debate," and appear to be "debate(s) set in writing".Printed Pages: 349. 102102

Dharma: Studies in its Semantic, Cultural and Religious History
Motilal Banarsidass Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2009; 8120833384; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New;
This is the first scholarly book devoted to the study of the term dharma with in the broad scope of Indian cultural and religious history. Most generalizations about Indian culture and religion upon close scrutiny turn out to be inaccurate. An exception undoubtedly is the term dharma. This term and the notions underlying it clearly constitute the most central feature of Indian civilization down the centuries, irrespective of linguistic, sectarian, or regional differences. The nineteen papers included in this collection deal with many significant historical manifestations of the term dharma. These studies by some of the leading scholars in the respective fields will both present a more nuanced picture of the semantic history of dharma by putting contours onto the flat landscape we have inherited and spur further studies of this concept so central for understanding the cultural history of the Indian subcontinent.Printed Pages: 500. 102515

Orient BlackSwan; New Delhi, India; 2017; 8178244942; Hardcover; New; New;
In classical times, India’s diverse groups – whether defined by family or caste, professional or religious association – settled on a concept of law. How did they reach consensus? Its breadth captures the centuries-long struggle by Indian thinkers to theorize law in a complex society.The volume includes new and accessible translations of key texts, notes that explain the significance and chronology of selections, and a comprehensive introduction that summarizes the development of various disciplines in intellectual and historical terms.With exceptional detail and historical precision, this Reader provides unique insights into the legal interactions among India’s many groups. Structural Appraisal of Traditional Buildings
Donhead Publishing Ltd; Hants, UK; 2005; 1873394683; First Edition; Hard Cover; Brand New; Brand New; 16.5 Cms x 25 Cms
This book is a comprehensive guide to the common causes of structural damage. It examines the techniques for collecting evidence including desk study, visual inspection, distortion survey, testing and ground investigation as well as offering advice on managing liability. Before damage to a building can be remedied, the investigator has to discover the cause as well as predict the possible effects of the damage. This book provides an important study of the analytical skills necessary to achieve this. Practitioners in this field have no codes of practice or standards to fall back on – there are few formulae or theories for the deduction of structural problems – but there are methods for examining and analysing the damage which will help to produce the correct appraisal. Patrick Robson gives a clear assessment of the techniques involved and provides useful advice on dealing with the problems of diagnosis. He first outlines the principles of investigating safe buildings: how to collect and interpret evidence from observation and knowledge of the common causes of structural damage. This is followed by chapters covering techniques for collecting evidence: desk study, visual inspection, distortion survey, testing and ground investigation. Effective interpretation is of course vital and many practical examples are offered including complex cases where the investigator has inadequate evidence or damage is sudden. Appraisal can benefit from a period of monitoring, so methods for measuring movement and damage progression are also included. Finally the author explains investigators’ liability for their work and how to manage that liability. Contents: Introduction Principles: safe structures Causes of damage: superstructure Causes of damage: shrinkage and expansion Causes of damage: deterioration Causes of damage: ground movement The influences of foundations Desk study Visual inspection Distortion survey Testing Ground investigation Interpretation Masonry buildings Timber frame and earth walling Inadequate information Sudden damage Monitoring Managing liability Conclusion Glossary Further reading Index Printed Pages: 224 with numerous b/w illustrations. 008296

Structural Repair of Traditional Buildings
Donhead Publishing Ltd; Dorset, UK; 1999; 1873394683; First Edition; Hard Cover; Brand New; Brand New; 18 Cms x 25 Cms
This book will be of interest to everyone involved in the repair, maintenance and refurbishment of traditional buildings. Its purpose is to promote the successful structural repair of masonry, timber and unfired earth. The book begins by explaining how traditional structures work and how they are affected by the behaviour of the soil that supports them. It goes on to explain how the structural design of buildings has to cope with uncertainty. Techniques for doing so are well established for new buildings, but the viewpoint changes when existing buildings need to be repaired or refurbished. The most common sources of structural damage are listed. The more serious and progressive ones are described in detail, as an aid to diagnosis and prognosis. An understanding of prognosis enables repairers to decide whether urgent intervention is necessary or whether the problem can be allowed to run its course. A straightforward method is proposed for arriving at the most suitable remedy. Several typical repairs are illustrated. The book covers many allied topics, including the principles of conservation, health and safety and preventative maintenance. A chapter is devoted to the special needs of insured perils. Contents: Introduction Part I Basics: Structural behaviour; Soil behaviour; Uncertainty and performance; Conservation; Health and safety; Diagnosis. Part II Defects: Causes of structural damage; Below ground defects; Ground floor defects; Loss of equilibrium; Movement; Fire; Chemical attack on concrete; Deterioration. Part III Options: Purpose of repair; Foundations; Ground floors; Timber; Masonry; Weak materials; Restraints. Part IV Management: Preventive maintenance; Planning and conducting work; Insured perils; Law; Surprises. Appendix: Risk assessment, health and safety. Secrets of the Earth: Questions and Answers on the Line of Ten Avatars of Vedic Tradition (Kalki Avatar)
Motilal Banarsidass Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2009; 0945747101; Softcover; New;
In past ages the knowledge was the possession of a small group of initiates who had opened the doors to occult and spiritual knowledge and were charged with its preservation for future generations-the few who shall see what none yet understands. But with the advent of the Supermind, the time has come at last for these mysteries to be revealed. In her Secrets of the Earth, the author has laid bare the evolutionary 'scheme of Avatarhood' and disclosed in its entirety the full face of the Cosmic Truth. With the coming of Sri Aurobindo, the 9th Avatar and the Solar Line he heads we can now follow the evolution through its incarnational stages of becoming to its final apotheosis of a Supramental Species and a Life Divine. This is a unique document. Its contents offer startling revelations which make it the only comprehensive study of Vishnu's line of Ten Avatars. The author reveals the system the ancients used to identify the the Avatar, he who comes 'from age to age'. She proves that this tradition has been with us from the Vedic Age. There is a precise time for these appearances and specific tasks each Avatar must fulfil for the Earth's evolution.Printed Pages: 122. 102105

22417 Patrul Rinpoche, Khenchen Palden Sherab & Khenpo Tsewang Dongyal (Authors)
The Nature of Mind: The Dzogchen Instructions of Aro Yeshe Jungne
Snow Lion/Shambhala Publications/TBI; New Delhi, India; 1559394498; Softcover; New; 15 x 23 Cm
Patrul Rinpoche, the beloved nineteenth-century master best known for Words of My Perfect Teacher, collected the teachings of the tenth-century adept Aro Yeshe Jungne and synthesized them into the short text translated here as Clear Elucidation of True Nature. How to put these essential teachings into practice is the subject of the lively commentary by the two Khenpo brothers, the late Khenchen Palden Sherab Rinpoche and Khenpo Tsewang Dongyal Rinpoche. The Dzogchen meditation instructions of the Aro lineage are divided into nine sets, or nine levels, with specific instructions for each on how to identify the nature of the mind, how to abide in it as a way of life, and how to liberate turbulent thoughts and emotions when they arise. The commentary enfolds this instruction into a broad general teaching suitable for beginners that serves as an introduction to Dzogchen meditation, to the Nyingma tradition, and to basic Buddhism. 22418 Patrul Rinpoche, Translated By Padmakara Translation Group with a Foreword By the Dalai Lama
Words of My Perfect Teacher: A Complete Translation of a Classic Introduction to Tibetan Buddhism
Vistaar Publications; New Delhi, India; 817036812X; Sixth Reprint; Paperback; New; 16 Cms x 23 Cms
The Words of My Perfect Teacher is the classical commentary on the preliminary practices of the Longchen Nyingtin--one of the best-known cycles of teachings and a spiritual treasure of the Nyingmapa school--the oldest Tibetan Buddhist tradition. Patrul Rinpoche makes the technicalities of his subject accessible through a wealth of stories, quotations, and references to everyday life. His style of mixing broad colloquialisms, stringent irony, and poetry has all the life and atmosphere of an oral teaching. Great care has been taken by the translators to render the precise meaning of the text in English while still reflecting the vigor and insight of the original Tibetan. A preface by His Holiness the Dalai Lama, insightful introductory essays, explanatory notes, and classic illustrations enhance this quintessential introduction to Tibetan Buddhist practice. This second, revised edition is the result of a further detailed and painstaking comparison of the original Tibetan text with the English translation, carried out by the Padmakara Translation Group's lamas and translators. While no major changes in meaning have been found necessary, this has allowed some of the more subtle details to be brought eyen closer to the original Tibetan without any loss of readability. The new edition also includes translations of a postface to the text written a century ago (for the first printed edition in Tibetan) by the first Jamgon Kongtrul Rinpoche, and a new preface by the late Dilgo Khyentse Rinpoche. The notes, glossary and bibliography have been expanded and updated, Sanskrit names and terminology have been given their proper transliterated form, and the illustrations have been improved in quality and supplemented with new material Printed Pages: 504. 031293

What is Karma?
Motilal Banarsidass Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2009; 8178223317; First Edition; Softcover; New;
Karma is a household word by now. Often spoken with sarcasm or heard with scorn in intelligent circles. Especially by energetic self-actualizers, who associate it with passivity or hear it as an excuse for laziness or fear of responsibility. Sometimes sighed in real or affected resignation to "God's will." The term “karma” in its original reference includes mental actions. Karma is simply a power of the Universal Mind to effect adjustment, to restore equilibrium, and to bring about compensatory balance. In the sphere of human conduct the result is that somehow, somewhere, whatever we do is ultimately reflected back to us. No deed is exhausted in the doing of it; eventually it will bear fruit which will return enexorable to the doer. Karma is a self-moving force. Nobody, human or superhuman, has to operate it. Paul Brunton is widely recognized as one of the twentieth century's most perceptive students of ancient wisdom. This little book presents, in condensed and concentrated form, what he learned about karma from a long and richly varied lifetime: from personal research, relentless trial and error, and intimate association with wise men and women from sacred traditions throughout the world. These pithy gems are drawn from a broad span of his writing, ranging from as early as the mid- 1940s to shortly before his death in 1981. They concisely present the essence, and many of the details, of the teachings of karma as they appear throughout the world's wisdom traditions.Printed Pages: 144. 102161

Perspectives: The Timeless Way of Wisdom (Volume 1: A Creative Synthesis of Eastern and Western Ideas), (The Notebooks of Paul Brunton Series)
Motilal Banarsidass Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2009; 8178223384; Softcover; New;
This is an inspiring insight into the essence of East-West spiritual philosophy. Going to the heart of virtually every aspect of the spiritual quest, it introduces a major series: The Notebooks of Paul Brnnton. It is a representative survey of more than 7,000 pages of notes withheld by Paul Brunton for posthumous publication. The stilled, introverted, and receptive mind of Paul Brunton perfectly mirrors the powers of the Divine Mind which unfold temporally as all that is true or real in our world, What the book gives us is not to be equated with the undifferentiated intelligence of the living universal consciousness, it is in truth an accurate reflection of it in terms more accessible to our spiritually younger minds.Printed Pages: 423. 102172

With the ultimate goal of transmuting "sexual" energy to its higher octave, The Body presents a sane and effective graduated sexual ethic that acknowledges individual levels of development and spiritual commitment.Printed Pages: 167. 102176

The EGO from Birth to Rebirth, Volume 6 (The Notebooks of Paul Brunton Series)
Motilal Banarsidass Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2012; 817822383X; First Edition; Softcover; New;
Part 1, The Ego, is a unique and unprecedented contribution to the literature of self-realization. It explains, at an existential rather than psychological level, what ego is, how it works, and its place and role in spiritual life and practice. Part 2, From Birth to Rebirth, shows the role of death in the ongoing cycle of life, clarifies beliefs about reincarnation, and explores the creative relationships between fate, destiny, and free will. How could anyone say he experienced the world unless he were separate from it and could interact with it? But this truth must be extended to include his body which, although less obviously so, is something likewise experienced and felt. In his error he identifies himself with his body when there must be an experiencing Principle, something that feels the world and the body as being there and the must therefore be other and apart from them. This Principle is, and can only be, the stable self, the real and permanent of a man.Printed Pages: 185. 102178

Reflections on My Life and Writings, Volume 8 (The Notebooks of Paul Brunton Series)
Motilal Banarsidass Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2014; 8178224402; First Edition; Softcover; New;
Paul Brunton was among the most eloquent inspirers of independent, individualized modern spirituality. From his early years as an effective popularizer of meditation to the masterful West-East philosophical synthesis of his maturity, he was both a debunker and a revealer-with special gifts for evoking the living presence of the heart's noblest ideals. Reflections, volume eight in The Notebooks of Paul Brunton, contains primarily PB's reflections about himself-50 years of research, practice, and writing-and the people, influences and events he considered significant in his life. Paul Brunton was an intensely private and naturally unassuming man. He continually sought for effective ways to bring his ideas to the public mind and keep his own personality at a low profile. When pressed to describe himself, he usually said that he was a researcher-which he defined as one who creates new knowledge. Maturing with a century that brought more changes than the previous thousand years, he witnessed the advent of the automobile, the airplane, radio, television, and nuclear power, and devoted his life to a path of spiritual discovery suitable for this epoch of turmoil and transition.Printed Pages: 253. 102180

The Hidden Teaching Beyond Yoga: The Path to Self-Realization and Philosophic Insight
North Atlantic Books/TBI; New Delhi, India; 2015; 1583949100; Softcover; New; 15 x 23 Cm
Inspired by his time spent with wise sages in Asia in the 1930s, Paul Brunton (1898-1981) wrote The Hidden Teaching Beyond Yoga (and its companion volume The Wisdom of the Overself) at the request of these remarkable teachers, who recognized that he had a significant role to play in the transmission of Hindu Vedanta and Buddhism to the West. Brunton's books are a profound re-creation of the teachings of those two philosophical schools of thought, informed by the insights of deep meditation. Clearly written without the specialized vocabulary found in those traditions, the books speak directly to the contemporary spiritual seeker.The Hidden Teaching Beyond Yoga is a step-by-step guide to actually experiencing the spiritual truth that reality is formed within our consciousness rather than outside us in the world of material things. Brunton's expert analysis of perception, grounded in science, is designed to awaken us to our sacred foundation and to transform our personality into a mirror of that reality. Brunton prepares us for this journey by describing the attitudes, mental disciplines, and character traits that are beneficial for success in this quest.This new edition has been updated to incorporate the author's final revisions and includes an introduction by the Paul Brunton Philosophic Foundation. The Quest of the Overself
Rider Books/TBI; New Delhi, India; 184413041X; Softcover; New;
The Quest of the Overself shows Western readers how to achieve serenity of mind, control of thought and desire, and the power to use higher forces by means of simple exercises. These include breathing and visualization as well as mental control through meditation. These ideas, which the author gained by extensive travel in India, are as relevant to us today as they were when first published in 1937. Paul Brunton was a British philosopher, mystic and traveller. He left a successful journalistic career to live among yogis and holy men and studied a wide variety of Eastern and Western esoteric traditions. As he explains in the still fresh and fascinating The Quest of the Overself meditation and the inward quest are by no means exclusively for monks and hermits but also support those living everyday, active lives in the West. 112823

The Religious Urge Reverential Life: The Notebooks of Paul Brunton, Volume 12
Motilal Banarsidass Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2017; 8178224925; Softcover; New;
This twelfth volume emphasizes the importance of veneration for the source of Life at all levels of human development. It focuses in detail on The Religious Urge and The Reverential Life, categories seventeen and eighteen (of twenty-eight) in the personal notebooks Dr. Paul Brunton reserved for posthumous publication. With broad tolerance and critical insight, The Religious Urge speaks directly to the individuating modern mentality. It welcomes the diversity in religion and acknowledges, with profound gratitude the invaluable services of inspired spiritual teachers throughout the worldís history and in the contemporary scene; but at the same time it fully sympathizes with those for whom institutional religion has become an oppressive cause of fruitless conflict. Part 2, The Reverential Life, focuses on the development of our relationship to the divine through the feeling function. It gives an individualized, practical approach to honest communion with the sacred through intelligent prayer, rational devotion, and informed, mature humility. A wonderful resource of aspirations, devotions, and practical techniques for reducing the ego's obstructive arrogance, it is first a section to be drawn upon for inspiration and only secondarily a text to be studied. 113512

The Cambridge Illustrated History of Ancient Greece
Cambridge University Press; Cambridge, UK; 2002; 0-521-52100-6; First Edition; Paperback; Brand New; 22 Cms x 27 Cms
Sumptuously illustrated in colour and packed with fascinating information, The Cambridge Illustrated History of Ancient Greece is now available for the first time in a revised paperback edition. Offering fresh interpretations of classical Greek culture, the book devotes as much attention to social, economic, sexual and intellectual aspects as to politics and war. Paul Cartledge and his team ask what it was like for an ordinary person to partake in ‘the glory that was Greece’. They examine the influences of the environment and economy; the effect of interstate tensions; the implications of sexuality; the experience of workers, soldiers, slaves, peasants and women; and the roles of myth and religion, art and culture, and science and education. This is a cultural history which reveals the far-reaching linguistic, literary, artistic and political legacy of ancient Greece, and seeks justification for Shelley’s claim that ‘we are all Greeks’. The Philosophy of the Upanishads
Munshiram Manoharlal Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 1979; 8170691044; Reprint; Cloth; New; New; 14 Cms x 22 Cms
What is that by knowing which everything in this vast universe is known? This question has sometime or other agitated all thinking persons. The hoary sages of ancient India, after deep and prolonged meditation, discovered the answer that by knowing Atman, the sole reality that sustains the universe, all is known; for the atman creates this universe and enters into it as soul. Atman also termed Brahman, the creator is the supreme soul; atman the created is the individual soul. The entire esoteric fabric of the Upanishads, which number more than a hundred, is woven around two concepts-that of the Brahman and the atman. They urge the earnest seeker to strive for Brahma-atma-aikyam (unity of the Brahman and the Atman). As the path to this knowledge is beset with perils and sharp as a razor's edge, the adept teachers commencing from such an insignificant trifle as a fig take their pupils through theology, cosmology, psychology and eschatology to that destination where all illusions vanish and the purport of laconic but profound statements like tat tvam asi (that art thou), aham brahma asmi (I am Brahman) are realized. Countless philosophers, notable being Badarayana the author of Brahma-sutras, have sought inspiration from the upanishads for their systems of philosophy. The unabating popularity of Paul Deussen's The Philosophy of the Upanishads ever since its first publication in 1906 attests to the quality of its contents. This second edition is brought out to reach a wider circle of readers who desire to have a close acquaintance with the philosophy of the Upanishads. Printed Pages: 444. 026736

Sixty Upanisads of the Veda, 2 Vols
Motilal Banarsidass Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2010; 8120814673; Seventh Edition; Softcover; New;
The Upanisads from the concluding of the Vedas and are, therefore, called the Vedanta or the end of the Veda. The number of the Upanisads is not fixed. The collection of Upanisads translated by Darashikoh into Persian contained 50 Upanisads. The Muktika Upanisads gives a list of 108 Upanisads. There are about 112 Upanisads published by Nirnaya Sagar Press. But only ten Upanisads which were commented upon by Sankaracarya are taken to be genuine and most authoritative. The Upanisads, which teach that life and death are only different forms of one and the same being and which aim at the release from mundane existence by the merging of the individual soul in the world soul through correct knowledge, have been hailed as the inspired utterances of the mystics for centuries. In them the whole of the later philosophy of the Indians is rooted.Printed Pages: 1029. 102109

Sanskrit and the Advaitic View of Truth
Motilal Banarsidass Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2013; 8120835352; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New;
The aim in this book is to explore what relationship there may be between language and truth. That deceptively simple word 'truth', can be understood in various ways, but for the purpose of this book, it is taken as understood in the philosophy of advaita (non-dualism. More particularly, a good part of the book discusses ways in which one language, Sanskrit, can be seen as embodying the principles of advaita. In the last century Western philosophers have treated the subject of language and truth on the basis that either truth is uncertain and language is incapable of expressing it, or that the philosopher's task is simply to show how language can express meaning clearly and unequivocally.Printed Pages: 124. 102154

Talk at Work: Interaction in Institutional Settings
Cambridge University Press; Cambridge, UK; 1992; 0521374898; First Edition; Hard Cover; Brand New; 16 Cms x 24 Cms
In the first collection of its kind, Paul Drew and John Heritage bring together the latest advances in the application of conversation analysis to the study of language and interaction in institutional settings. Leading American and European scholars contribute to Talk at Work original empirical research into the interactions between professionals and ‘clients’ in a wide variety of settings, including doctor-patient consultations, legal hearings, news interviews, visits by health visitors, psychiatric interviews, and calls to the emergency services. Taken together, their reports are an illuminating exploration of how key aspects of an organisations’ work are managed through talk and of the distinctively asymmetric character of institutional discourse. The use of a method at the forefront of research, on recordings of naturally occurring interactions in the settings under scrutiny, uncovers the relationships between social contexts and social actions and offers invaluable insight into the traditional concerns of the sociology and ethnography of organisations, sociolinguistics and pragmatics. Entries include: three separate preliminary sections—Location, Description, Site Office. This introduction is followed by a 3,000-4,000 word essay in two parts. Part one is a description of the "condition" of the site, what may be seen there currently. Part two, the main portion of the essay, is the history of the place, the events that happened there and their significance. "Entries conclude with an annotated Bibliography of books/articles pertaining to the site. Each entry is illustrated with a current or historic photograph, a plan, or an artist’s rendering of the site as it was, whatever is most appropriate to the subject. Out of the East: Spices and the Medieval Imagination
Orient BlackSwan; New Delhi, India; 2009; 8125036857; First Edition; Paperback; New; 15 Cms x 23 Cms
The demand for spices in medieval Europe was extravagant and was reflected in the pursuit of fashion, the formation of taste, and the growth of luxury trade. It is inspired geographical and commercial exploration, as traders pursued such common spices as pepper and cinnamon and rarer aromatic products, including ambergris and musk. Ultimately, the spice quest led to imperial missions that were to change world history. This engaging book explores the demand for spices: why were they so popular, and why so expensive? Paul Freedman surveys the history, geography, economics, and culinary tastes of the Middle Ages to uncover the surprisingly varied ways that spices were put to use- in elaborate medieval cuisine, in the treatment of disease, for the promotion of well-being, and to perfume important ceremonies of the Church. Spices became symbols of beauty, affluence, taste, and grace, Freedman shows, and their expense and fragrance drove the engines of commerce and conquest at the dawn of the modern era. When Breath Becomes Air
Bodley Head/TBI; New Delhi, India; 2016; 1847923674; Hardcover; New; New;
At the age of thirty-six, on the verge of completing a decade’s worth of training as a neurosurgeon, Paul Kalanithi was diagnosed with stage IV lung cancer. One day he was a doctor treating the dying, and the next he was a patient struggling to live. And just like that, the future he and his wife had imagined evaporated. When Breath Becomes Air chronicles Kalanithi’s transformation from a naïve medical student “possessed,” as he wrote, “by the question of what, given that all organisms die, makes a virtuous and meaningful life” into a neurosurgeon at Stanford working in the brain, the most critical place for human identity, and finally into a patient and new father confronting his own mortality. What makes life worth living in the face of death? What do you do when the future, no longer a ladder toward your goals in life, flattens out into a perpetual present? What does it mean to have a child, to nurture a new life as another fades away? These are some of the questions Kalanithi wrestles with in this profoundly moving, exquisitely observed memoir.Paul Kalanithi died in March 2015, while working on this book, yet his words live on as a guide and a gift to us all. “I began to realize that coming face to face with my own mortality, in a sense, had changed nothing and everything,” he wrote. “Seven words from Samuel Beckett began to repeat in my head: ‘I can’t go on. I’ll go on.’” When Breath Becomes Air is an unforgettable, life-affirming reflection on the challenge of facing death and on the relationship between doctor and patient, from a brilliant writer who became both. By Force of Arms: Armed Ethnic Groups in Burma
Vij Books India Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2013; 9789382652212; Hardcover; New; New;
Burma has been racked by extensive ethnic conflict. As numerous groups sought to secure their individual ethnic rights, successive Burmese governments sought to destroy them through numerous counter-insurgency measures, negotiated ceasefires, and by integrating them into Burma Army controlled Border Guard Forces or militias.‘By Force of Arms' provides background information on the numerous armed ethnic groups that have emerged in the country since independence. It highlights the various reasons for conflict and argues that while military force has been successfully used in preserving ethnic rights, as the country moves forward, new methods have to be explored. It states that for genuine peace to be attained, armed ethnic groups need to reassess their methodologies and motivations and both the Government and Non-State Armed Actors need to hold substantive political dialogue before there can be genuine peace.Printed Pages: 272. 103297

Lenin and the Revolutionary Party
Aakar Books; New Delhi, India; 9789350024188; Softcover; New;
For generations, historians of the right, left, and center have all debated the best way to understand V. I. Lenin’s role in shaping the Bolshevik party in the years leading up to the Russian Revolution. At their worst, these studies locate his influence in the forcefulness of his personality. At their best, they show how Lenin moved other Bolsheviks through patient argument and political debate. Yet remarkably few have attempted to document the ways his ideas changed, or how they were in turn shaped by the party he played such a central role in building.In this thorough, concise, and accessible introduction to Lenin’s theory and practice of revolutionary politics, Paul Le Blanc gives a vibrant sense of the historical context of the socialist movement (in Russia and abroad) from which Lenin’s ideas about revolutionary organization spring. What emerges from Le Blanc’s partisan yet measured account is an image of a collaborative, ever adaptive, and dynamically engaged network of revolutionary activists who formed the core of the Bolshevik party.
