A Hundred Small Steps
Sage Publications; New Delhi, India; 2009; 817829950X; First Edition; Paperback; New;
While previous reports have focused solely on the ‘big’ issues like capital account convertibility, bank privatization, and priority sector norms, A Hundred Small Steps: Report of the Committee on Financial Sector Reforms goes deep into other areas where reforms are less controversial, but perhaps as important. The report argues that we need a change in mindset for the financial sector, one that recognizes that efficiency, innovation, and value for money are as important for the poor as they are for our new Indian multinationals, and these will come from improved governance, new entry and competition. Indeed the Committee believes that the road to making Mumbai an international financial centre runs through every village in India. The report is divided into separate self-contained chapters; the underlying theme behind all the proposals is the need to enhance inclusion, growth, and stability by allowing players more freedom, even while strengthening the financial and regulatory infrastructure. The role of the government is to create an enabling environment by building sound financial infrastructure. The Committee has focused primarily on broad principles and directions, without entering too much into details of implementation. It emphasizes three important reasons for financial sector reform: to include more Indians in the growth process; to foster growth itself; and to improve financial stability, flexibility, and resilience and thus protect the economy against the kind of turbulence that is affecting the world today. The Committee recognizes this is a difficult time to propose financial sector reforms in India. The near meltdown of the US financial sector seems to be proof that markets and competition do not work. This is clearly the wrong lesson to take from the debacle. The right lesson is that markets and institutions do succumb occasionally to excesses, which is why regulators have to be vigilant. The report argues for skilled regulators who encourage growth and innovation even while working harder to contain risks. Printed Pages: 208. 028558

Vikram and Vetal
Puffin; New Delhi, India; 2005; 0143334980; First Edition; Paperback; New; 13 Cms x 20 Cms Dipankar Bhattacharya
The king slashes his way through the forest, his sword cutting down the terrifying rings of leaves and branches. He climbs a tamarind tree and brings down a corpse hanging from its highest branch. Just as he turns to make his way out of the gloomy forest, an eerie voice cackles in his ear . . . Thus begins the saga of Vikramaditya, the brave and noble king, and the Vetal, his tormentor from the spirit world. As Vikramaditya trudges through the forest, the Vetal narrates stories to him, ending each with a riddle that tests the king’s famed sense of justice, his ideas of right and wrong. Many centuries later, a twelve-year-old girl, disgusted at the way her summer holiday is turning out, runs away to a dusty field where she meets a strange old man sitting under a large tree. The man tells her stories about kings and queens and people of long ago, tales of generosity, courage and wisdom as well as of treachery, deceit and great stupidity. Incredibly, each of the stories deals with ideas and issues that are being debated at home by her eccentric grandmother. She also learns that these are the ancient Vikram and Vetal stories, and that King Vikramaditya had asked for a boon wanting these tales to be handed down generations. But who is the old man? And what connects the girl to a king from ancient times? Deftly weaving together the age-old Vikram and Vetal stories with the mysterious happenings of a summer holiday, Poile Sengupta brings alive these classic tales in a new, energetic way. Funny, sad, serious and weird, this unique retelling proves how relevant these tales remain even today. Printed Pages: 163 with numerous b/w illustrations. 011595

If anyone could transform laughter to light, she did, Inga. Radiance upon radiance of laughter, chime upon bell chime of light sparkled and shone everywhere. It was as if the sky showered tiny star grains that scattered, glinting, on the hay heap we were cocooned in; they sparkled on the leaves of the jackfruit tree above and dusted my arms with gold. Who could resist such a dance of light…? I couldn’t, I never could. Almost never.Rapa is born into a Tamil Brahmin family, full of dark secrets. She is brought up in Delhi where an ‘English’ education introduces her to literature that is both fascinating and foreign. Her summer holidays are spent in the confines of the family home in Kerala, where she has for companion her cousin Inga. But as the two girls grow up, their lives change through a tortuous, pain-filled process.Forty years after her death, Rapa’s husband has her notes published, the story of her struggles against her family, her marriage and her final encounter with Inga.A tragic tale of yearning and hope, of derision and rage, of miracles and dreams, of commitment and utter rejection. 109692

The archaeological studies of Tamil Nadu so far are primarily based on selective excavations carried out mainly in the prehistoric and early historic sites. No doubt, various scholars attempted in reconstructing the past with help of the data is quite admirable. They took all pain in assembling together all these data but faced difficulties in framing theories due to the inadequacy of the materials which the present volume meets these lacunas. The present book is in fact, the result of the author’s seven years of field observations made in the areas ruled by the Sangam Age chieftains mainly covering the Vaigai, Maratar and Gundar river basins of the southern district of Tamil Nadu. This comprehensive study has put the geological wealth and geographical position of a particular region in a better perspective to understand the evolutionary process of the particular culture. The vast archaeological data delineates the settlement pattern of Palaeolithic, Microlithic, Neolithic also Megalithic cultures of the people. Economic Democracy Through Pro Poor Growth
Sage Publications; New Delhi, India; 2009; 817829849X; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New;
This volume addresses a central dilemma of our times from a perspective based on lessons from the ground—persistence of structural poverty after sixty years of independence amidst rapid economic growth, widening social anomie, political crisis and failing policy. . The collection presents an alternative school of thought which has been evolved by scholars and activists over decades, in which the poor are presented not as the problem but as an essential resource. Among this volume’s distinguishing ideas are: a new role for the poor, raising mass consciousness, a core methodology for transformation, restructuring the state, pro-poor partnerships for all social constituencies, insistence on holism and values, learning from the poor and new social movements, and eschewing a priori thinking. This perspective powerfully argues the validity and feasibility of sustainable and transformative societal change. . The compilation is rich in lucidly presented case studies and illustrative examples. The strategies advocated would catalyse the process of achieving political and economic democracy at the grassroots and facilitate sustainable development. They would also help in the democratization of the phase of transition and growth. This work is an excellent reference source for development economists and students, researchers and faculty studying governance, poverty and human rights, and issues of security and human rights. T-Junction: Crossing Over for Change
Times Group Books; New Delhi, India; 2011; 9789380942698; First Edition; Softcover; New;
Times of India Books’ title ‘T- Junction’ by Poonam Srivastava sketches life stories of Crossover Indian Social Innovators who have capitalized on their mainstream professional skills to start parallel experiments of change impacting many lives. The 'T' metaphor represents the total path change between left or right like at a T- Junction traffic signal.We are concerned about the common thread of unrest running through recent traumatic events in seemingly unconnected places like Egypt, Greece, streets of burning London or our own backyard of Naxalite stress zones. We cannot ignore the unifying denominators of economic depravity and free radical forces of youth that threaten to ignite the tinder box of prevalent social inequities, one of the primary reasons behind such growing global unrest. Given such turbulent times, T- Junction is not just a book but a larger idea to inspire change. The ‘T’ metaphor brings many possibilities in its fold. It becomes the Tipping point Traction moment of Transition; showing methods of Triumph over Troubles in times of Travails, resulting in scale Transformation steered by a culture of Total Team play.The book hopes to intrigue and inspire readers, especially the younger generation, about some celebrated and some less known but equally amazing tales of 'cool' 'awesome' human effort. It aims to bridge a warm connect between the readers and the documented causes.T- Junction stories can play the role of a Torchbearer for motivating many others desiring to walk the path of social impact but lacking clarity on strategy and modalities. Hence, we are keen to maximize outreach for the book to benefit greater number of interested readers. We would be very indebted for your support in achieving this goal.Printed Pages: 344. 104934

China: Confucius in The Shadows
KW Publishers; New Delhi, India; 2015; 9789383649358; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New;
Earlier this decade a statue of Confucius appears suddenly in Tiananmen Square in Beijing. It is facing Chairman Mao’s statue in front of the Forbidden City. Mysteriously, it disappears a few days later. Why was it removed overnight? Where is it now??No clear answers seem to have emerged. Most communist regimes have tried to make a break with the traditions of the past believing them to be the cause of all ills in society. But has the historical experience of Communist regimes shown that to be true? Today, Buddhist, Daoist and Confucian temples across cities and villages in China are crowded with people offering prayers. People swarm to pay their respects to their traditional sages. Like the warp and weft of a fabric, China has the mark of traditions and ancient ethos present in its society and this has come handed down over the centuries and across generations.Confucianism has been among the most well absorbed, best known and documented value systems in China. It was and still is a living tradition, a way of life and a philosophy. Propounded by Confucius (551-479 BC), this value system has had a lasting and deep seated influence on the Chinese. A philosopher and a thinker of the Spring and Autumn period, Confucius has been considered a wise and fair teacher and a shrewd strategist in war.In spite of the fact that Confucian values have been present beneath the surface in China along with Buddhist and Daoist beliefs for generations, it is interesting to study why Confucius is being talked about so much of late. Over the years in Communist China, Confucian thought had been swept under the carpet but resurrected in part depending on whether it suited the then current leadership. While Mao rejected Confucius’s ideas, he did not hesitate to use them whenever it suited him.A study of Confucius and his value systems at this moment in time makes sense and is important for a number of reasons. In the evolving socio political milieu of China, interpreting Confucian philosophy as being non confrontationist, benevolent and with values such as filial piety and harmony could help the current political regime deal with such problems as corruption and rising inequalities. In the quest for the answers relating to the psyche of the Chinese people there will always be questions. Many will be answered, many answers may change even as we attempt to write about them. However, it can be said that inspite of Marxist and Communist ideologies, regimes and political change, tradition and Confucian values in China have never been far from the surface and often above it. Through the history of China, this has held true, inspite of Communism, inspite of Mao and inspite of the current regime.Printed Pages: 282. 105040

Witnessing to Students: Efficacy of UESI in India (Christian Heritage Rediscovered: 16)
Christian World Imprints/B.R. Publishing Corporation; New Delhi, India; 2015; 9789351480402; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New;
The significant feature about India is that has "a wide variety of religious traditions." The Christian missions among these traditions face a great challenge. One of the observation in Indian missions is that the church has made a significant impact on `Dalits' and `Tribals', but its impact on Hindu and the Muslim communities is insignificant.The `Union of Evangelical Students of India', popularly known as UESI, has been one of the prominent ministries contributing to this end. This book meticulously evaluates the modus operandi employed by this ministry for the attainment of this objective.With a strong combination of academic as well as practical research. Author provides a wealth of information with regard to how to do effective students' ministry in India. It also reflects Author's wide experience, insights and passion for the work of evangelization. The book is meant to seek answers of some unanswered questions like: Why Christian missions in India had been stagnated among the `Dalits' and `Tribals' only? why they are not able to succeed in witnessing the Gospel to upper caste Hindus and Muslims also?This factual and figurative presentation is going to be a manual for all those who passionately follow the teachings of Lord Jesus Christ and want to share the Gospel not only to the large student population of India but also meaningfully to the South Asian individuals and communities with relevance and sensitivity so that they could undergo a spiritual rebirth and pave their way towards revealing the Divine.Printed Pages: 114. 106402

A Theological Response to Street Children: An Empirical Study (Christian Heritage Rediscovered: 19)
Christian World Imprints/B.R. Publishing Corporation; New Delhi, India; 2015; 9789351480532; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New;
This book is meant to be a squeaky wheel to bring up the issue of street children evaluating their present condition globally as well as locally. This well-explored presentation focuses on the subject which otherwise was always neglected within the social sciences especially in theological studies. Presently, several Social Work Agencies & NGOs are working to rehabilitate these street children, but still this social disease needs serious attention by the public at large and especially by the Christian community.During the Biblical times `street children' was not a serious issue as it is now, but there are instances that can help us to understand God's concern for the poor and rejected people on the streets, which includes children also. The Bible has much to say on the provision and protection of the children. Contrary to the Bible sayings, these runaway kids get involved in social crimes as well as sexual abuse and consequently develop HIV infection. The missiological research on children proves that this is the right age to help them to know God who can liberate them from all the oppressive structures.The Author carefully ties in the problem of street children around the world with the humane acts already done by Christians. But, he is also concerned with the increasing number of street children especially in India. This well-researched, compassionate, and groundbreaking book is for those who have a real concern for these special gifts of God.Printed Pages: 120. 106396

Munshiram Manoharlal Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2005; 8121511577; First Edition; Hard Cover; New; New; 14 x 22 Cm
The dearth of written material of quality and authenticity on contemporary music performance, musicians and related issues needs to be considered seriously in the context of preservation, propagation and promotion of Indian classical music. The reading material available today on Indian music is mainly by theoreticians and not practising musicians. In general one observes lack of objectivity and scientific approach in the work by Indians and the absence of cultural perspective in the work by non-Indians. A professional Indian woman performer is still a rarity in this field. 'Along the Path of Music' is not a biographical work. It is a journey in and out of a noted musician Dr Prabha Atrre who cannot dissociate herself from music even in her personal life. A first hand account of her music journey, observations, experiences, reactions, in her own words makes reading of this book interesting and engaging. The objective, scientific approach and cultural perspective bring this book credibility. Printed Pages: 221. 013091

The Legacy of Yoga in Bhagawad Geeta: The Classical Text of Srimad Bhagawad Geeta in Sanskrit, Its Romanized Transliteration, Eng Translation, Lucid Commentary and Indexes
Motilal Banarsidass Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2014; 812083688X; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New;
The Geeta is an intimate dialogue between God and man. The God-incarnate is Lord Krishna and man is represented by the Mahabharata hero Arjuna. It is intimate because the esoteric wisdom imparted therein, says the Lords, is "is more secret than secrecy itself" (XVII. 63). A great battle is to ensue between the two royal clans of Kauravas and Pandavas. Arjuna requests Krishna, who is acting as his charioteer, to take him between the two standing armies so that he may have a look at those who have gathered to fight with him. There Arjuna is overcome with grief and refuses to raise his bow against his respected gurus and elders, and other kith and kin. At this critical juncture Lord Krishna explains to him what is right and what is wrong, and how by adhering to dharma a person can earn the highest virtue. Every human heart is like a battlefield of good and evil forces. At times a person is not able to decide the right course of action. He is deluded and confused. When confronted with such a situation, he can turn to the Geeta, it will not fail him. The book therefore is of universal appeal which offers satisfactory solution to basic human problems. Whatever page you turn, and whichever verse you read, it is bound to elevate and inspire. It is not the book of a particular race or religion but the common heritage of the entire mankind. Integrated Maritime Security: Governing the Ghost Protocol
Vij Books India Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2014; 9789382652670; Hardcover; New; New;
This book is unique in the way that it looks at the much talked about maritime security through the perspective of national security, without disconnect, in the terrain specific mode of the ocean. The uniqueness is not in the treatment of the concept of maritime security but that of national security in a manner that is different from the beaten notion of physical security of a nation and its people from external and internal threats. National security, according to the author, is more than just military security or the conditions of what is often termed as internal security. It is complex according to his studied findings. The book provides a warning to governments that any approach to national governance without integrated maritime security can be defeating in the overall objective of maximising national security even for landlocked countries in the modern world. The book provides a comprehensive review and analysis of integrated maritime security providing ample scope for further research on many of the concepts and terminologies inculcated as findings of research. The interesting aspect is that the author views maritime security as a ghost protocol to hammer his ideas into the earnest listener.Printed Pages: 478. 103231

Marine Environment: Management and People's Participation
KW Publishers; New Delhi, India; 2009; 8187966858; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New;
Life on earth is sustained by the ocean. The ocean that has been treated as a universal sink by human habitation can give up the ghost one day. We do not know for sure, though. But the end, if it is there, will be slow and painful. Everything around the ocean will go along with it. The only life form that could prevent such happening is the human being. Therefore, people's participation is the key for managing the marine environment. In this context, it is important to understand that the marine environment comprises not only the ocean but also the part influenced by it over the land and the air above. It is possible to handle the marine environment better through people and appreciating it as a continuum, not fragmenting it by impulse. The book is about it. It looks at marine environment management differently.The book is a researched publication. The intention is to identify a variety of measures to manage the marine environment. Towards this objective, the study delves into new concepts and recommends additional findings in a manner that is useful for people involved in the management of marine environment at individual, local, national and international level. Throughout the study, the author maintains the stasis of marine environment as one that is continuous. The study also identifies the centre of gravity of marine environment lies not exactly in the ocean, but within the interfacial marine environment (IFME) that is the part of the ocean-land-air continuum. The IFME is a new concept identified in this research. The book highlights the fact that people's participation is vital in managing marine environment, because no human on the planet can afford to shun away from the responsibility towards environment. Constitutions acclaim it. The book is expected to be useful to the practitioners, governments, administrators, researchers, scholars, media, students and the public in general. The key words are highlighted for better understanding along with diagrams and tables. Glossary, appendices and bibliography supplements the reading for research and understanding.Printed Pages: 350. 104425

Indigo and the Raj: Peasant Protests in Bihar 1780-1917
Pragati Publications; New Delhi, India; 1993; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New;
The Book makes an attempt to study indigo plantation in Bihar and discusses how the raiyats posed resistance to it. It traces the development of European interests during the eighteenth, nineteenth and twentieth centuries. The demand for the raw material in foreign markets forced the cultivators to grow indigo in colonial India, especially when Bihar was ravaged by recurrent famines. The East India Company's encouragement, patronage and protection to the planters against the raiyats not only earned enormous profit for the "mother country" but also sustained the Raj from below through the planters who established over four hundred indigo kothis in the Gangetic plain of rural Bihar. Forced to grow indigo by the systems of contract and satta, the raiyats fled to Nepal terai in Search of earning their livelihood. The work explains how the collaboration between the zamindars, planters, landlords and the colonial administration proved ruinous to the tenants. But the tenants, although poor, illiterate, backward and ignorant, were not docile and meek enough to surrender before the oppressive masters. Irrespective of caste and community consciousness, the tenants resisted the planters and threatened the social and political base of the Raj. Thus began the tradition of mass protests in Bihar which paved the way for Gandhiji's Champaran movement in 1917.The main thrust of the study lies in the tact that the tenants of Bihar never compromised either with the Zamindars or the' planters or the alien rulers. They gave stiff resistance to the exploiters. Their main contribution was that they showed their combined strength and thus proved their potentiality for a mass political action.Printed Pages: 210. 101201

Tibet: Perspective and Prospects
Aryan Books International; New Delhi, India; 2013; 817305472X; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New; 15 x 22 Cm
In recent years, there has been considerable interest among the scholars, human right activists, strategic thinkers and the wider public about Tibet. The present volume focuses on different aspects of the Tibetan problem. Some noted experts and professionals with long experience have contributed to this work. The articles cover a wide range of issues providing comprehensive perspectives as also an analysis of contemporary developments. The book reflects the views of an institution, and individuals, who are deeply concerned about Tibet. This concern ranges from the past, especially the recent tragic past, to the future. As to the past, there is a sense of concern that India and, before 1947, British India did not play fair by that unfortunate country. More specifically, the contributions reflect the anguish felt by a growing number of people around the world that the history of Tibet is not adequately known, and hence the tragedy continues–away from the glare of publicity. Spiritual Life and Liberation
Parimal Publications; Delhi, India; 2011; 8171103820; Hardcover; New; New;
Indian School of Spirituality (Adyatmavada) is the beacon light in this materialistic age. The Vedas are the foundation of all the orthodox Schools of Indian Spirituality. The School of Vedanta (Uttara Mimamsa), which is affiliated to the end portion of the Vedas, is now widely accepted by the spiritual seekers. There are three schools of Vedanta viz., Dvaita (Dualism), Vishista Dvaita (Qualified non-Dualism) and Advaita (Non-dualism). Advaita Vedanta is the culmination of all philosophy. The goal of spiritual life is liberation of the soul. Spiritual life manifests the divinity of the soul in the mortal body. Liberation is possible only through purification of inner being and not through rational analysis of science. Spirituality is beyond the sense and therefore its approach is intuitive and not analytical. The goal of spiritual life is liberation of the soul. Parimal Publications; Delhi, India; 2010; 8171103618; Hardcover; New; New;
The intellect (Buddhi) is the most important instrument in self-evolution of the soul. Intellect is the discriminative faculty which reveals the ephemeral nature of things around and brings faith in the eternal nature of the soul. The one, whose intellect has been carried away by the violent sense-organs, quickly perishes. Therefore, purification and enlightenment of the intellect is the prime means for self-protection. Sandhya Vandanam of body, life and mind and then enlightens the intellect through Gayatri Upasana. This Book presents the theory and practice of Sandhya Vandanam and Gayatri Vidya which facilitates the entry of the soul into the plane of Vijnana. The purpose of this book is to reveal the various planes of soul-existence and not merely a mechanical performance of rituals. This book brings about a synthesis of Karma, Upasana and Jnana by rendering English translation of three minor Upanishads dealing with Gayatri Vidya. The ultimate aim is to eliminate all desires from the intellect and confer Brahma Vidya on the seekers of liberation. Thanjavur: A Cultural History
Niyogi Books; New Delhi, India; 2011; 8189738623; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New; 8.5 x 11 Inches
In this fascinating study in words and images Pradeep Chakravarthy and Vikram Sathyanathan narrate the cultural history of Thanjavur starting from its early days of grandeur in the Chola empire when the Chola king Raja Raja I built the Rajarajeswaram Temple now known as Brihadeeswara temple which celebrates its 1000th year of consecration in 2010.They weave together known and unknown histories of various rulers of Thanjavur - the Cholas, the Nayaks, the Marathas and the British, into a rich tapestry of cultural heritage that is Thanjavur. They reveal to the reader the treasure house that is Sarasvathi Mahal Library, lead the reader into the narrow lanes or sandhus where the painters who created the now famous Thanjavur style lived along with bangle-sellers, the textile merchants, perfumers and the devadasis, They also take the reader along a trip on the fertile river banks of Kaveri where Carnatic music and Bharatanatyam as we know them today were created and flourished alongside drama forms like the bhagavata mela and yakshagana. The temples, the palace, the bronzes, the paintings, the frescoes, cuisine, the weapons of war, ivory dolls, the kalamkaris, and literary genres like the abhyudayamu, prabandham and kuravanji are all brushstrokes that make up a colourful painting that tells the story of the city of Thanjavur. Kodaikanal: Vanishing Heritage of an Island in the Sky
Niyogi Books; New Delhi, India; 9789383098569; Hardcover; New; New;
The Palni Hills, including Kodaikanal and the surrounding villages, is a very special part of the Western Ghats, with its own distinctive flora and bird life, especially in the upper plateau. The climate of the area is as effective a barrier to species’ migration as the waters of the ocean are to an island. That is why we refer to these hills as an ‘island in the sky’. The rare and precious natural heritage of this ‘island’ needs to be preserved and nurtured. The Palni Hills receive the heaviest rainfall in southern Tamil Nadu. Water supplies from the Palnis are thus crucial for farmers down below, and we highlight the need to safeguard this vital catchment. The heritage buildings in Kodaikanal have been built with local material–stone quarried from the hills, red clay from the mountains as mortar, and local wood. The ground-hugging elevations of the old buildings blend beautifully with the hill landscape, and carry the much needed message of a nature friendly architecture. The only way to preserve the heritage is to educate and sensitise residents and visitors to appreciate the delicate balance and understand the symbiotic nature of its existence–flora, fauna, and human. Only such an awareness will ensure that development efforts are environmentally suitable and sustainable. The contributors, representing INTACH, Kodaikanal Chapter, hope that this book will contribute to enlightened management of this ecologically vulnerable and beautiful part of India.Printed Pages: 236 with 197 colour & 7 b/w photographs. 106570

Kailash is the only place of pilgrimage in the world where four mighty religious communities-Hindus, Buddhists, Jains, and Tibetan Bonpas perform their religious rites. For Shaivites, the worshippers of Lord Shiva, Kailash is the most sacred of all the Hindu pilgrimages. Lake Manasarovar was formed from the mind of Lord Brahma, and hence called Manasa-sarovar. Niyogi Books; New Delhi, India; 2012; 819209121X; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New; 30 x 30 Cm
A master painter, a colourful persona, a filmmaker with a difference, a lover of the most expensive cars on earth, a painter who preferred to walk barefoot—Maqbool Fida Husain was an enigma even to those who knew him best. M.F. Husain’s was an inspiring story of rags-to-riches. Through it all, he remained a true artist, whether painting hoardings, designing furniture or making films. That Husain was one of the greatest artists in the world is beyond doubt. His expression of creativity can be seen not only in his paintings but also in the love he had for the places and people that shaped his legendary status. In this richly photographed book, Pradeep Chandra pays tribute to M.F. Husain, an artist who he has been photographing for decades. Chandra paints a picture of the man behind the artist in an attempt to understand the legendary painter through his work, installations, cinema, family, friends, the women who inspired him and his undying love of art. Abhishek Bachchan: Style and Substance
Niyogi Books; New Delhi, India; 2016; 9789385285295; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New;
This book contains some fascinating anecdotes and a wonderful collection of photographs, spanning several decades. The story of Abhishek, the only son of Amitabh and Jaya Bachchan, is captured in great depth and detail by the author-cum-photographer, Pradeep Chandra. 'The urge to know more about a person like him propelled me to write this book,' shares Chandra. 'But, along with me, my camera, too, is equally drawn to Abhishek. He is an interesting subject because he displays a plethora of emotions without any hesitation. I have been clicking him since he was a kid.'This special pictorial biography brings to life the many facets of the actor, highlighting the different roles he plays. Rugged masculine looks, style and charm are part of the persona of a star, an actor, a celebrity. Yet Abhishek is a man of many milestones, in areas as diverse as movies, sports and business. Borderlands: Travels Across India's Boundaries
Hachette India/Prakash Books; New Delhi, India; 2017; 9789351950233; Hardcover; New; New; 13 x 22 Cm
For most residents of India'’s bustling metros and big towns, nationality and citizenship are privileges that are often taken for granted. The country’s periphery, however, is dotted with sleepy towns and desolate villages whose people, simply by having more in common with citizens of neighbouring nations than with their own, have to prove their Indian identity every day. It is these specks on the country's map that Pradeep Damodaran rediscovers as he travels across India’s borders for a little more than a year, experiencing life in far-flung areas that rarely feature in mainstream conversations. In Borderlands, he recounts his encounters with the war-weary fishermen of Dhanushkodi at the southernmost tip of Tamil Nadu, who live in fear both of the Indian Coast Guard and the Sri Lankan navy; farmers in Hussainiwala, a village on Punjab’s border with Pakistan, who are unwilling to build concrete houses for fear of them being destroyed in the ever looming war; Tamil traders of Moreh, a town straddling the Manipur-Myanmar border, who pay bribes to at least ten different militant organizations so they can safely conduct their business; and ex-servicemen in Campbell Bay who were resettled there three generations ago and have long been forgotten by the mainland.From Minicoy in Lakshadweep to Taki in West Bengal, Tawang in Arunachal Pradesh to Raxaul in Bihar, Damodaran’s compelling narrative reinforces the idea that, in India, a land of contrasts and contradictions, beauty and diversity, conflict comes in many forms. Indian Ocean Challenges: A Quest for Cooperative Solutions
KW Publishers; New Delhi, India; 2013; 9789381904657; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New;
The Indian Ocean Region (IOR) is of immense strategic significance on the global maritime map – not just on account of its centrality to the current trade and energy flows, but also because of the extreme disparities and inherent volatility of the region. The region faces an array of security challenges, both traditional and non-traditional. These include security of SLOCs, the problem of piracy, the possibility of renewed terrorism at and from the sea and the pervasive smuggling of people, narcotics and arms. The narrative of regional maritime security is also characterized by oscillating economic growth, growing military presence and a rapidly deteriorating ecological balance in the Indian Ocean.A stand-out feature of the IOR is the lack of correspondence between nations on issues concerning ‘security’. While using the high seas for trade, transportation of energy, major powers have tended to neglect the impact of the economic activities on the sea itself. In contrast, smaller regional countries and island states with developing economies have, at best, been able to use only those resources of the sea which are vital to their survival.A stand-out feature of the IOR is the lack of correspondence between nations on issues concerning ‘security’. Geopolitics of the Indo-Pacific
KW Publishers; New Delhi, India; 2014; 9789383649099; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New;
In recent years, the descriptive term ‘Indo-Pacific’ has entered the geo-strategic lexicon as a substitute for the more established expression ‘Asia-Pacific’. Defined as an integrated strategic system that best captures the shift in power and influence from the West to the East, the concept has dominated strategic debates and discussions, gaining rapidly in currency and acceptance. Popular though the term has become, its strategic context and underlying logic are still sharply contested. While proponents of the ‘Indo-Pacific’ advance compelling arguments in its favour, the debate over whether it is a valid construct, is not quite settled. Consequently, it is yet to gain full acceptance among regional analysts and policy makers who appear unsure about embracing the idea without any qualifying caveats. Even so, the Indo-Pacific has emerged as a significant strategic space and a theatre of great-power competition. From a maritime security perspective, its importance as a geo-economic hub is accentuated by the growing presence of non-traditional threats. Piracy, terrorism, gun running, illegal fishing, trafficking, global warming and natural disasters represent challenges to maritime security that are inherently transnational in nature – where dynamics in one part of the system influence events in another, necessitating coordinated security operations by maritime forces and strategic relationships between stakeholder states. Papers put together in this book seek to appraise the Indo-Pacific, by examining the concept holistically, deciphering the trends that impact maritime security in the region and identifying its emerging patterns. Apart from examining the inherent logic underpinning the concept, these provide perspectives on security in the Indo-Pacific region, evaluate the strategic implications of competition, conflict and instability in the region, and bring out the operational implications of using a frame of reference that combines two contiguous albeit disparate maritime theatres.Printed Pages: 158. 104270

Indian and American Perspectives on Technological Developments in the Maritime Domain and Their Strategic Implications in the Indian Ocean Region
KW Publishers; New Delhi, India; 2013; 9789381904770; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New;
The maritime domain, hosting the highways of global prosperity—through trade, industrial raw material and energy links—rates high in its potential for conflict. As the global pendulum of economic vibrancy swings eastwards, the Indian Ocean Region (IOR) has been receiving increasing attention from all actors, state as well as non-state ones, and now presents itself in sharp focus as one of the volatile seascapes on this earth. The navies operating in the region will, therefore, need to depend on high technology and associated doctrines and procedures, so as to effectively deal with the wide spectrum of challenges therein. It will also become incumbent upon such littoral states as can afford the high cost of technology, to catch up so as to maintain their relevance in the great game being played out in their very own backyard.The United States as a leader in inventing and exploiting technology sets its own benchmarks in internalization of advanced technologies to undertake maritime missions at and from the sea in support of its military operations ashore. China, on the other hand, has been striving towards achieving asymmetric war-fighting capabilities, supported by other developing technologies as well as core capabilities like the Beidou position-fixing system, which would be central to network-centric operations, including missile guidance systems. As the IOR increasingly transforms into an arena of extra-regional power play, the implications of technologically enabled confrontations and their impact on resident states are poised to weigh in on a scale never imagined before. There is thus, a greater need for India to gain in-depth knowledge of and develop a perspective on advanced technology sensors, weapons, supporting infrastructures, doctrines and futuristic concepts in the maritime domain and their potential as strategic game changers in the IOR.Printed Pages: 176. 104304

Lokayata/Carvaka: A Philosophical Inquiry
Oxford University Press; New Delhi, India; 2015; 0199460639; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New;
Philosophy in the Indian tradition is often believed to be essentially religious in character. Even schools like Nyaya and Buddhism correlate their logic and epistemology with a transcendent religious goal. Yet, there exists a purely secular and rational exercise within the Indian philosophical traditions—the Lokayata/Carvaka school of philosophy. Owing to a lack of substantial literary sources, Lokayata has received only scant attention from scholars till now. This book is the first attempt to examine the philosophical energies inherent in the scattered Lokayata/Carvaka literature. Through a critical analysis firmly grounded in textual evidence, the author presents a systematic philosophical development of the pluralistic interpretation of this school. Claiming that the diversity in the Lokayata school is greater and much more complex than generally imagined, the book explores the cognitive scepticism of Jayarasi, the extreme empiricism popularly attributed to Carvaka, and the mitigated empiricism in its two versions: positivist and common-sense-oriented. It discusses these in a wider philosophical perspective in terms of their implications and their Western parallels. Printed Pages: 240. 104495

Foundation of Indian Musicology
Abhinav Publications/Kaveri Books; New Delhi, India; 817017273X; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New;
"This book is an attempt at a rational reconstruction of the fundamental principles of Indian Musicology and tries to indicate how the basic aesthetic appeal of the Ragas could be best interpreted. Challenging the idea that Indian music is a closed orthodox set of so-called rigid rules and principles, it treats Indian music as rooted in man’s spiritual vision. Music unfolds this vision spontaneously through proportionate note-sequences and it is the unending pilgrimage of man, which opens richer and greater horizons where man can find his home to be a hernmitage of abiding peace and blissful joy. 107985

History of Science and Philosophy of Science: A Historical Perspective of the Evolution of Ideas in Science (History of Science, Philosophy, and Culture in Indian Civilization: Vol. XIII, Part 6)
Munshiram Manoharlal Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 8131719308; First Edition; Hard Cover; New; New; 23 x 29 Cm
History of Science and Philosophy of Science, a primarily interdisciplinary study, deals with the historical and philosophical perspectives of science and explores the mutuality of the relations between the two disciplines. To present the study in a reader-friendly format, it has been divided into two parts, with the first volume (Part 6) dedicated to the ‘history’ of science and the second volume (Part 7) to the ‘philosophy’ of science. The first volume, History of Science and Philosophy of Science: A Historical Perspective of the Evolution of Ideas in Science, seeks to present a history of science where science is believed to proceed along with the operation of a number of mechanisms that are instrumental to its growth, thus making science a part of a creative culture. This part works out the relation not between history and the history of science, but between science and the history of science. Though the volume focuses mainly on physics and mathematics, it also includes essays on life sciences and consciousness studies. The order of essays is guided not by chronology but by a philosophical interpretation of the development of major reforms and revisions in the field of science both in India and abroad. Some authors have paid full attention to Indian science and its logic, while some others have preferred to deal with Western science. Presented in a fairly non-technical language and readily accessible even to non-specialists, these volumes will be of interest to researchers and well-informed general readers.
