Ragalaksanam of Sri Muddhuvenkatamakhi
Indira Gandhi National Centre for the Arts/MLBD; New Delhi, India; 2010; 8120834089; Hardcover; New; New;
The Ragalak?a?am was composed by Mudduve?ka?amakhin in Tanjore in the early eighteenth century CE. It is an important text of Karnataka music and appeared in an effervescent epoch in the development of this music system of which it deals only with raga.It collects, classifies, codifies and characterizes the entire music base of the Indian peninsula. The author was a musician, musicologist and music composer of high order. His contribution to the world of music is twofold; systematization of the theory of raga content of his times and creating music to crystallize the character and scope of each raga described. The author derived his inspiration from his great-grandfather, Ve?ka?makhim who revolutionized the theory and practice of Indian music through his scheme of seventy-two melas. His Caturda??iprakasika illustrates the four fun dam en tal components ( da??i of music-gita, alapa, ?haya and prabandha, which his paramaguro (teacher's teacher) Tanappa postulated and illustrated. His own guru was his father Govindadik?ita who made the first da??is in practice in his Sa?gitasudha. Thus a line of four important musicians musicologists-composer of south India - Tanappa, Govindadiik?ita, Ve?ka?amakhin and Mudduve?ka?amakhin -built up or reorganized a textual tradition which supported a living dynamic tradition of performed music in which hundreds of composers, thousands of performers and countless listeners endeavoured to continuously strengthen and nourish it. The Ragalak?a?am marks an important phase of this great evolution.Printed Pages: 393. 101614

India of Ideas: 175 Years of News Generating Views
Times Group Books; New Delhi, India; 9789382299806; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New;
India is not just the world's largest democracy, it is a cacophony of voices. There is everything that one could wish to find in this country. Yet, we cling on, not yet descending into the anarchy that we seem to outsiders. Odes can be sung about India's voice, and it still wouldn't do justice. When one part of it says "yea," another shouts "nay." Yet it is this cacophony that forms the soul of everything that is inherently Indian about out great country. In India of Ideas, Rupa Sengupta selects articles, editorials, reader's feedback and more from over 175 years of the Times of India's existence, taken right from its archives. In doing so, she lends some semblance of order to the chaos of India, and shows us that even in this disarray, we are united, and definitely proud to be what we are. Indians. 104689

Aristotle’s Philosophy of Science
Global Vision Publishing House; New Delhi, India; 2003; 8187746645; Hardcover; New; New;
Aristole was primarily an encyclopedist and with the partial exception of Democritos, he was the first one. Earlier philosopher had tired to explain the universe, but Aristotle, who shared their ambition, was the first to realize that such an explanation should be preceded by as complete an inventory and description of it as possible. He did not simply understand that need but, what is more remarkable, he satisfied it. The totality of this works represents an encyclopedia of the available knowledge, much of which was obtained by himself or because of his leadership. It is easy to find holes or errors in that encyclopaedia, but the amazing thing is that it was as good, as comprehensive and durable, as it was. This book will give various facets of Aristotle?s vast knowledge of science. Printed Pages: 302. 110078

India's Higher Defence: Organisation and Management
KW Publishers; New Delhi, India; 201; 9789380502564; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New;
Experts have repeatedly affirmed that the military debacle of 1962 is directly attributable to the failure of the Higher Defence Management. If the Indian leadership of 1947 had the resolve to establish the Higher Defence Organisation (HDO) through a Cabinet resolution within weeks of gaining independence, what went wrong in the first fifteen years? The Kargil episode was another sad reminder of the state of affairs, as brought out by the Kargil Review Committee and the Group of Ministers’ (GoM’s) report on Reforming the National Security System. This book dwells in detail on various reforms undertaken since Kargil and surveys the shortcomings that continue to plague defence decision-making in India. Almost a decade after the submission of the GoM’s report, the book is an aide memoire of the fact that the time has arrived to take a fresh look at higher defence and analyse where we stand now. Exploring the past and discovering the genesis of Indian Defence Management since the Vedic Age, the book covers a large ground in analysing the role of HDO during the inter-state conflicts since independence, issues in defence planning, post-Kargil reforms, functioning of the Chiefs of Staffs Committee, the CDS impasse and the functioning of the National Security Mechanism.Printed Pages: 322. 104384

Tribal Ecclesiology: A Critical Synthesis of Early Christian Traditions and Cultural Traditions of Northeast India
Christian World Imprints/B.R. Publishing Corporation; New Delhi, India; 2016; 9789351481072; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New;
The book is an outcome of explorati on of two great traditi ons – the early Christi an traditions and Cultural traditi ons of Northeast India with a special reference to Mizo society. The author asserts that the uncriti cal acceptance of ecclesiology that these tribal churches are inheriti ng from the Western church traditi ons has resulted in the proliferati on of tribal people in line with diff erent denominati ons. Also, uncritical rejecti on of the local cultural traditions has contributed to the superfi cial character of the church which failed to respond to peoples’ problems. The author sought to construct a contextual ecclesiology for tribal Christi ans, based on the early Christi an traditi ons and Tribal cultural traditi ons, by adopti ng a criti cal synthesis method. Cambridge University Press; New Delhi, India; 2003; 052154307X; First South Asian Edition; Paperback; New; New; 14 Cms x 22 Cms
This new edition of Richard Hudson’s widely acclaimed textbook Sociolinguistics will be welcomed by students and teachers alike. To reflect changes in the field since publication of the first edition in 1980, the author has added new sections on politeness, accommodation, and prototypes; and he has expanded discussion of sex differences, culture and general theory. There remains coverage of classic topics such as varieties of language, speech as social interaction, the quantitative study of speech, and linguistic and social inequality. Like the first, the second edition of Sociolinguistics is an exceptionally clear and helpful overview of the relationship of language and society. Printed Pages: 295. 001738

Conservation of Buddhist Monuments in Central India
Sharada Publishing House; Delhi, India; 2015; 9789383221059; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New; 23 x 29 Cm
The Buddhist site of Sanchi was discovered by General Taylor in 1818 for the educated world. But the memory of Sanchi as a Buddhist establishment was alive till 1728 when Dost Mohammad founder of Bhopal dynasty admonished his brother Aqil for desecrating a Buddhist statue in Sanchi. This emphasises that the memory of Sanchi did not die but survived. In spite of desertion of the site by the Buddhist monks towards the end of seventeenth century and movement of monks towards western side of Malwa, Sanchi was in know of the people. The authentic description of Sanchi appeared in 1819 and it became known to the western world. From 1818-1851 no substantial investigations were carried out. In 1852, unsystematic excavations were carried out by Alexander Cunningham at Sanchi and other sites (Sonari, Satdhara, Bhojpur-Pipaliya and Andher), but no initiative was taken for the preservation till 1912. Between this period of half a century, more damage was caused to the Sanchi in the name of restoration and other sites suffered. John Marshall initiated conservation at the request of Bhopal state and the results of these operations were published in 1940. The fate of other sites in terms of survey, excavation and conservation remained neglected. In 1991 efforts were made to survey these Buddhist sites again along with Sanchi, which thrived more than fifteen hundred years. The survey of Satdhara and Bhojpur-Pipaliya revealed many facets of these establishments which had remained in oblivion for one and a half century. The present study deals with the survey, excavation and conservation. Much more work needed to be done around these sites. Hope future archaeologists will take it forward what has been done in the last fifteen years.Printed Pages: 180 with 62 colours & 126 b/w illustrations. 102716

Buddhist Monasteries of Ladakh
Sharada Publishing House; Delhi, India; 2014; 8192698300; Hardcover; New; New; 23 x 29 Cm
Government of India opened Ladakh for foreign tourist in 1975. This initiative of the Government attracted European scholars and tourists and gave a boost to economic activities. From 1975-85, large number of tourists visited Ladakh and created an inquisitiveness and interest in the Tibetan art and artifacts. Dozens of Kashmiris and locals opened kiosks and started selling local handicrafts. In the process replicas of thang-kas and ritual objects were also sold in the market. This period of ten years of commercial activity in the art objects started posing a threat and it was felt necessary by the government to support the monasteries financially and other institutions to undertake the safety and protection measures for the cultural heritage of Ladakh. For quite a considerable period this endeavour of government did not yield any tangible results, but definitely laid the beginning of a dialogue between monasteries and government. Government institutions initiated study and preservation of various monasteries and inculcated a sense of significance in the minds of Lamas and other concerned.The present study is a molecule attempt in understanding the monasteries and the objects housed therein. Much more remains to be done in different parts of Ladakh to assess the enormous wealth of art, architecture and literature. Hope future scholars may take forward what has been done in the present study.Printed Pages: 331 with 26 figures, 131 colour & 95 b/w illustrations. 102721

Suvarnadvipa: Ancient Indian Colonies in the Far East, 2 Vols
Gyan Books Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 1986; 8121200407; Hardcover; New; New;
Suvarnadvipa comprises Malay Penninsula and Sumatra, Java, Borneo and Bali islands. These places came under the influence of Indian civilization, in remote past and gradually flourished into powerful empires, rich both in material attainments and cultural refinements. The history and culture of these places are both interesting and culture of these places are both interesting and instructive. Apart from the importance of these regions in themselves, the study of Indian civilization must be regarded imperfect as long as the achievements of Indians and local people who imbibed Indian culture in the Far East, are not taken into account. But very little about these regions was known till Dr. R.C. Majumdar drew our attention to this field of research through his pioneering works in India. Suvarnadvipa in two volumes is the fruit of one of his painstaking researches. The author has used all the available material brought to light by the Dutch savants and all native and foreign sources, viz. accounts of Chinese travellers and Arab historians and geographers. He has interpreted various stories that throw light on the spread of Hinduism and Buddhism in Java, Bali, and Borneo and studied and used local inscriptions as source materials. He deals with the Sailendra Empire and later Indo-Javanese empires with fullness and care. It is an interesting theme told in an interesting manner. The first volume is devoted to the study of the political history upto the downfall of the Hindu kingdoms in Suvarnadvipa, while the second volume deals with the cultural history. Subjects covered by the second volume are law and socio-economic conditions, literature, religions, use of Sanskrit, art and architecture in different ancient sites, etc. The value of the work has been enhanced by seventy-five plates of illustrations.Printed Pages: 1004. 105645
