Continuing Traditions: Les Traditions Perpetuelles
Mapin Publishing; New Delhi, India; 2015; 9789385360022; Softcover; New;
The age of exploration was one in which a confident and wealthy Europe was ready to look at the world in different ways. By this time, the emerging European imagination could see the ‘world’ as an imagined or designative concept. Textiles brought the colours of the ‘other’ lands, and its mass printing and production brought a sense of fantasy and playfulness into European homes.Continuing Traditions follows the reflections on inter-relationships between textiles, trade and non-performing visual arts in India. The volume has been brought out in conjunction with an exhibition in India called ‘Safar-nama: Journeys through a Kalamkari Hanging’, an exhibition of digital prints of an ancient painted fabric piece in the kalamkari tradition of the Coromandel Coast which is now housed at the Museum of Printed Textiles of Mulhouse in France, along with ‘Continuing Traditions’, a show of contemporary artists and designers whose works can relate to it.Continuing Traditions showcases the works of contemporary Indian artists who have used selective aspects of textile craft or textile imagery as inputs in their practice. After a long modernist interregnum in which the sole objective was to create a thing-initself, these works emerge as a postmodernist re-assertion of interrelationship between worldly phenomenon. History of Modern Political Movements
Akansha Publishing House; New Delhi, India; 2003; 8187606401; Hardcover; New; New;
The present work is an attempt to Study at the regional level the complexities of various Political Movements in the era of India?s freedom struggle. The three movements in Orissa namely - movement or the Formation of a separate province, the Congressled movements and the Anti-feudal movements in the princely states overlapping each other, dominated the period of the present study. The movement for the assertion of Oriya identity and the Demand for a separate province for the Oriya-speaking people placed under various presidencies raises questions like whether it was nationalist, whether it was contradictory, cooperative or complementary with the Indian nationalist movement? Similarly the Nature of the movement in the princely states sand its inter-relation with the other two movements raises issues like the commitment of the Congress to the democratic ideas. One may question their nationalism or even their patriotism. In contrast, it is difficult to call them non-nationalist considering the whole gamut of their contribution for the all-round development of the province.Table of Contents Preface Introduction 1. The Genesis: Birth of Modern Orissa 2. The Movement for a Separate Province of Orissa 3. The Naionalist Movement 4. The Popular Movements in the Princely States 5. Ethnic Life-Worlds in North-East India: An Analysis
Sage Publications; New Delhi, India; 2008; 0761936130; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New;
Ethnic Life-worlds in North-East India: An Analysis draws upon the phenomenological notion of the life-world to understand the culturally-embedded construction of communities, for whom the lived experience of cultural politics constitutes their identity. It analyses the cultural and political determinants of ethnic- and identity-oriented struggles in India’s North-East, as well as the cultural politics of ethnic mobilizations in the region. Such mobilizations are an attempt to construct a self-identity distinct from that constructed by the state—both colonial and post-colonial India—which becomes a source of concern for the latter with regard to its achieving legitimacy and development in the region. While both the state and insurgent groups carve out their distinct ideological and political agenda on to the life-world of the North-East, it is at the point of diversion that the struggle for establishing such agenda falls into the trappings of constitutional determinism. This book analyses the articulation of ethnic politics in North-East India that takes into account moves for integration as well as apparent differences. In doing so, it critically examines two major insurgent outfits of the region—NSCN and ULFA. It also discusses struggles launched by the Naga and Assamese people and develops a neologism of nations-from-below, arguing that one needs to take into account the concrete totality of the people’s lived experiences. It bases this analysis on a critical discussion of the colonial construction of tribal identity and its post-colonial critique. Thought-provoking and analytical, this book opens a new window to the study of India’s North-East, which will intrigue students and scholars across various disciplines of development studies, sociology, philosophy, anthropology, political science and ethnic studies, and will be of interest to policy-makers, NGOs and global humanitarian communities. Praxis Commix: The Quest for Love Across Cultures
Vitasta Publishing Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2013; 9789382711001; Softcover; New;
This is the story of an achiever who, right from the time he trudges to school carrying a heavy bag, asks several questions about the world and his role in it. He makes it to a prestigious engineering institute in Gujarat and then to Ireland and France for higher studies. He falls in love first with an Indian girl and then with a foreigner. As he struggles with the restrictions of culture, he wonders why an individual's happiness has to be submerged to uphold tradition. In all this, he holds a mirror to Indian society, wondering how a country can progress in this age of globalisation if it clings so strongly to age-old mores. These questions will find resonance in readers' own lives, making this much more than the gripping story of one young man's coming of age in the new millennium. Printed Pages: 176. 107234

Create, Copy, Disrupt: India’s Intellectual Property Dilemmas
Oxford University Press; New Delhi, India; 0199470669; Hardcover; New; New;
In 1947, a newly independent India was saddled with a host of intellectual property (IP) laws left behind by the British. In the following decades, India broke away from colonial IP legacies, while navigating international treaty negotiations in the light of its redefined national interests. These changes affected ordinary lives—be it through medicines, music, movies, books, food, yoga, or the Internet—but have never been narrated to a larger audience. This book unravels the development of India’s IP law and policy in modern times, in a form and style designed for the general reader. The chapters in the book centre on different industries and sectors, such as pharmaceuticals, book publishing, cinema, music, the Internet, food, yoga, and traditional knowledge. Each chapter features a lively narrative that has been constructed from various sources, including parliamentary debates, expert reports, interviews, archival research, and case law. The book’s unique focus is on the politics and history of Indian IP, rather than the black letter of the law. Printed Pages: 400. 111592

Motilal Banarsidass Publishers Private Limited/Research India Press; New Delhi, India; 2016; 8178224828; First Edition; Softcover; New;
Pranayama is a compound word meaning Prana 'Vital Energy' and Ayama 'Control and Regulation'. But it is not basically breath-control or breath-regulation. Pranayama needs a lot of study of breath usages, applications and Addressals by-on-in-with breath. This book provides a classical and traditional approach towards life by breath control with different type of asnas. This differentiates between physiology of respiration that comes in body-science and physiology of breathing that occurs in the science of yog. Gleanings in Ancient Indian Numismatics
Agam Kala Prakashan; Delhi, India; 2014; 8173201420; Hardcover; New; New; 15 x 23 Cm
The field of ancient Indian numismatics is fraught with a number of problems and debates, which make the study of the coins of ancient India, such a rewarding and interesting endeavour. These problems and debates include those of the origin and antiquity of coinage in India; introduction of the die-striking mode of fabrication of coins, and of legends on ancient Indian coins; problems of attribution; of the rarity of busts and of realistic portraiture on ancient Indian coins; and of identification of deities on coins. Then, there are some enigmatic types; the significance of monograms appearing on coins; certain coin denominations; and forgery of coins, which pose problems. The author has presented, in a summarized manner, some of these vexing problems of ancient Indian numismatics, which appear to defy solution. Scholars have been endeavouring to find solutions to these problems. The author, himself, has devoted over a quarter of a century, pondering over such problems and debates. However, at best, the solutions proposed may be termed as probable, and not final and universally accepted ones.Printed Pages: 200. 101523

The Successors of the Mauryas: A Political History Based on Coins and Inscriptions
Agam Kala Prakashan; New Delhi, India; 2017; 8173201730; Hardcover; New; New; 15 x 23 Cm
The period c 187 BC to 319 AD, that is the period beginning with the decline and downfall of the Mauryas and ending with the rise of the Imperial Guptas, sandwiched as it is between these two great dynasties of ancient India, was,till very recent times, called the first dark age of ancient Indian history. However, it is one of the most interesting periods of ancient Indian history, and has received the attention of historians, most of them numismatists and epigraphists, as coins and inscriptions are the two major sources for the study of the political history of the period. This work is meant as a textbook on the political history of the successors of the Mauryas, for the use of undergraduate and postgraduate students of ancient Indian history, particularly those students, who have opted for courses in ancient Indian numismatics and epigraphy. I hope that it shall equip them to appreciate the historical importance of coins and inscriptions, and locate them in their true historical perspective. As always, the drafts of the work were read by Prof K K Thaplyal, and by my father, Shri Priyonath Srivastava; sadly, I lost the latter, while the work was in progress. My sincere thanks to both of them, for their appreciation, criticism, and valuable suggestions. My mother, Mrs Pushplata Srivastava, has been a constant source of inspiration. Thanks are also due to my wife, and my daughters, Pratichi and Purvi, and my nephews, Ayush and Raxit, for their untiring support during the progress of this book. The Tagore Library, University of Lucknow, Lucknow; the State Museum, Lucknow; the Archaeological Survey of India, Lucknow Circle, Lucknow; the Central Library, Archaeological Survey of India, New Delhi; and the National Museum, New Delhi, provided facilities of study, for which I owe thanks to their respective librarians and staff.The photographs of coins published have been provided by the State Museum, Lucknow, and the IIRNS, Nashik, for which I thank both the institutions. Dr. Agam Prasad, of Agam Kala Prakashan, Delhi, promptly took up the book for publication; my thanks to him and his staff, especially Shri Ashok Kumar Pandey, for the care they have put in in the publication of the book. 18 November 2016 Prashant Srivastava Prashant Srivastava. The Jain Art from India: The Peaceful Liberators
Motilal Banarsidass Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 1996; 0500278709; Softcover; New;
This book was published in conjunction with the exhibition The Peaceful Liberators: Jain Art from India, which was organised by the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. It is the most comprehensive presentation to date of the art-work emerging from the Jain religion. The Jains, despite their rigorous ideal of non-attachment to the physical world, have produced a cultural heritage paradoxically regal in its imaginative splendor and its physical realization. The approximately 120 works in this volume, spanning nearly two millennia and displaying an astonishing variety of modes and styles reveal the presence of a major artistic tradition. Jain manuscript illuminations have heretofore received the most attention in art historical books. Created between the eleventh and sixteenth centuries, they fill a large gap in the history of Indian painting. The other form of Jain cultural expression that has been generally noted is the group of extraordinary marble temples created between the eleventh and thirteenth centuries at Mount Abu, in Rajasthan. Otherwise, except for a few individual objects, such as first-and second-century votice tablets known as ayagapata, or the colossal statue of Bahubali in Sravana Belgola, few Jain objects are discussed in art books. This volume provides for the first time a wide-ranging survey of Jain art, showing its enormous variety in all artistic media and forms.Printed Pages: 276. 102504

Decoding Intolerance: Riots and the Emergence of Terrorism In India
Lotus/Roli Books; New Delhi, India; 8174367438; Hardcover; New; New;
The rioting in Jabalpur, Madhya Pradesh, in 1961 was a watershed event for India. After the Partition, it was the first time such large-scale communal violence had taken place. The author, Prateep K. Lahiri, on his first posting, was involved in bringing the situation under control. Some time later in 1969, as district magistrate of Indore, Lahiri played a key role in dealing with the outbreak of communal violence in that city. While the violence in both instances appeared to have been spontaneously provoked by an incident - just like in Gujarat in 2002 - the reasons that later emerged for the rioting revealed the deeper malaise that continues to affect our social system. Decoding Intolerance: Riots and the Emergence of Terrorism in India is a significant book by an administrator, who has observed the minutiae of the crisis from close quarters and scrutinized the role of the police and the state administration. The author synthesizes various dimensions of the issue, including the changing perceptions of Indian Muslims in the recent past, the history of religious fundamentalism and how it manifests as communal unrest, both in India and elsewhere. The phenomenon of terrorism, which has reared its ugly head over India and the world, is also touched upon to understand the implications it has had on the shifting political scenario. Decoding Intolerance critically analyzes the recurrence of communal violence and offers a persuasive argument about the problem, with a focus on its prevention in the future. Economic Security Dimensions in Central Asia: Role of India
KW Publishers; New Delhi, India; 2012; 9789380502922; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New;
With the dawn of the twenty first century, the debate on the classical formulation of national security versus human security or comprehensive security gained momentum amongst think tanks. The forces of globalisation and regionalisation have reshaped the contours of the existing international economy order and have brought new challenges to the forefront. India is no different story. Economic integration has both historical and modern dimensions, and quite rightly, attracts the attention of politicians and experts worldwide; consequently, the geostrategic, political and economic importance of Central Asian Region cannot for much longer remain excluded from Indian concerns and strategies. The five Central Asian States – Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan are richly endowed with commodities such as crude oil, natural gas, cotton, gold, copper, aluminum and iron, still struggling with the transition to free market economies. The Annual Report of India’s Ministry of Defence stressed the five Central Asian States as an area of vital importance not only because of its geographical proximity and India’s historical and cultural links but also because of the common challenge they all face from extremism and terrorism. In spite of common interests, the altitude of trade involving the two sides is abysmally low. However, in recent times, trade and investment relations between India and Central Asia have been a cause of concern for policymakers, analysts, academicians, media and the businesspersons. Essential objective of our nation’s national security strategy is to promote India’s prosperity through efforts both at home and abroad and our affluence at home depends on engaging vigorously abroad. The strength of our diplomacy, our ability to maintain an unrivalled military and the attractiveness of our values depend in part on the strength of our economy. The challenge, therefore, is to keep the engines of growth running through trade, commerce and every other form of human endeavour, whilst at the same time keeping disruptive forces at bay. This book aims to generate ideas of discussion, research and a mechanism to march towards exploring the possibilities of using economic interests as a positive force for bilateral and multilateral relationship.Printed Pages: 448. 104356

The Paramaras C. 700-1305 A.D.)
Munshiram Manoharlal Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 1970; 8121504104; First Edition; Hard Cover; New; New; 15 Cms x 23 Cms
The present work is the history of the Paramaras and the territories ruled over by them. Coming from somewhere in the vicinity of Mt. Abu of which the Agnikula myth may be a distant echo, the Paramaras established a number of kingdoms in Malwa and the adjacent districts, Arbudamandala, Vagada, Bhimal-Kiradu and Jalore. During the course of nearly five hundred years of their political existence (c. 800-1305 A.D.) they ruled over extensive territories, the combined strength of which was more than that of any other contemporary Hindu dynasty of Northern India. Among all the Paramara kingdoms that of Malwa rose to great heights. Founded by Upendra sometime in the last decade of the 8th Century A.D. it became the strongest kingdom in central and western India under its ambitious and imperial rulers Vakpati-Munja (974-994 A.D.) and Bhoja (1010-1055 A.D.). Thereafter, passing through varying fortunes it continued its existence till the early years of the 14th century A.D. when it finally succumbed before the Khalji Sultans of Delhi. The greatest contribution of the Paramaras seems to be in the spheres of literature, arts and architecture. The names of Munja and Bhoja have become a legend. Their capital cities Dhara and Ujjain became centres of literary and artistic activities where scholars and artists gathered from all over the country. An attempt has been made for the first time into the investigation of the administrative system, religion, social and economic conditions in the Paramaras' kingdoms. A brief survey of the literary and artistic achievements, accompanied with a number of illustrations has been added in order to give some completeness to the picture of life as it was lived in those days. In reconstructing the history of the Paramara kingdoms the author has made a critical and judicious use of information scattered through a wide range source-material-epigraphs, literary works of the Brahmanas and the Jainas and the archaeological evidence. She has taken cognizance of the recently published monographs based on research done into the history of all the contemporary dynasties..
