‘When the Saints Go Marching In’: The Curious Ambivalence of Religious Sadhus in Recent Politics in India
Orient BlackSwan; New Delhi, India; 2014; 8125052690; Hardcover; New; New;
India is full of stories of yogis, bursting in saffron on photo-postcards and mundane streets. These are saints who speak in many voices: calm and wise, vitriolic and adversarial, mystical and transcendental. Their non-worldliness sets them apart from the common man. But one event showed the world another face of the quintessential sadhu—that of the political actor. When the Saints go Marching In documents the role played by sadhus in Indian national politics. They came together in 1992, to oversee the Babri-mosque demolition and propelled the BJP into national prominence. Then these sadhus splintered among themselves and with the BJP, and preferred reticence to the spotlight. What were the factors that caused the theatrical union of these highly-individualistic, strong-willed and eloquent sadhus? How did the sudden splintering in their unity come about soon after 1992?Printed Pages: 324. 101907

Tibetan Refugees in India
Kaveri Book Service; New Delhi, India; 2003; 8174790624; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New; 15 x 23 Cm
It is well known fact that the problem of Tibetan refugees is a living problem and it is bound to remain so for many years to come. Despite of constant protests made by Communist China on the issue of Tibetan refugees, the Government of India remains in a state of readiness to tackle the problem on a scale and in a manner which the magnitude and intensity of the problem demand. The grant of asylum to political and religious refugees has been the tradition of every civilized community... Repatriation is not the ultimate, real solution of the problem of Tibetan refugees. On the contrary, the immediate problems and important questions of these refugees are the three basic needs of livelihood, food, clothing and shelter. Besides this, medical aid, education, employment, settlement and finally absorption come to the forefront. These questions are not temporary or time being concerns at least in the case of Tibetan refugees. This is how the situation of Tibetan refugees in India provoked the author to undertake this study which makes an attempt to find out the action/reaction of the local people vis-a-vis Tibetan in and around the settlement camps. Contents: (1) An Introduction to the Term Refugee, (2) Historical Background of Tibetan Refugees, (3) Survival in Exile, (4) Reconstruction of Tibet in Exile, (5) Implications on India as a Host Nation, Conclusion, Appendices.Printed Pages: 156. 104247

How India Earns, Spends and Saves: Unmasking the Real India
Sage Publications; New Delhi, India; 2010; 8132104765; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New;
This book maps the earning, spending and saving profiles of Indians in the post-liberalisation era. It studies how socio-economic, religious and individual characteristics lead to inequality in the incomes of households. Among other aspects of the problematique, it reveals that while a household’s income is primarily dependent on socio-economic factors (occupation, education and age of its chief earner), its economic prosperity is impacted by factors like its spending and saving levels, sectors of employment of members, state of residence, and so on. The book is based on the results of the National Survey of Household Income and Expenditure (NSHIE) 2004–05, conducted under the aegis of the National Council for Applied Economics Research (NCAER). It not only offers valuable insights for economic analysts, policy makers, development professionals and academics, but the primary data of the survey also offers opportunities for further research. The Third Sex and Human Rights
Gyan Books Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 1999; 8121206421; Hardcover; New; New;
The hijras in India, Pakistan and Bangladesh represent a terribly marginalised Minority community, to the extent that they are even ignored by human rights activists. In this book, the author argues that their situation can be compared with that of trans-sexuals in the West, both in terms of the complications regarding marriage, Adoption and Sexual status. Whereas in the west, in the last few years, the national courts of several Countries as well as International Judicial Forums, such as the European Court of Justice and the European Court of Human Rights, have focussed on the human rights of trans-sexuals and have delivered several important judgements with respect to them, nothing has been done with respect to their South Asian counterparts, namely the hijras. In this book, the author has made a unique Comparative Study of the human rights asbuses and Legal problems faced by members of the 'third Sex in the West and India. Relevant and important documents, not available elsewhere, concerning sexual minorities have also been included in the Annexures.This book is an Essential reading for human rights activists, social scientists, those connected with the Law and all the concerned citizens.Printed Pages: 216. 105925

Inside Gayland
Kalpaz Publications/Gyan Books Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2001; 8178350157; Hardcover; New; New;
Inside Gayland is a crazy satirical Play on the Law criminalising Homosexuality in India. The absurdity of this outdated law comes out forcefully when seen together with a similar law criminalising heterosexuality in Gayland. The mind-searing trauma of gays and Lesbians in India shunned by Society and criminalised by The Law can be better appreciated in the light of the pathetic plight of heterosexuals in Gayland. The intention of the playwright is aimed at Creating awareness in society in general and the taw makers in particular to the grossly unfair and unethical Laws to which homosexuals in India are subjected. Talwar's Inside Gayland is a pointer to the long path that India has yet to traverse to guarantee basic rights to all its citizens.Printed Pages: 232. 106007

Clashing Titans: Military Strategy and Insecurity Among Asia Great Powers
KW Publishers; New Delhi, India; 2012; 9789381904374; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New;
Asian inter-state relations are in flux. As Asian states grow richer and more developed, they are accumulating military power as a way of securing themselves. China has one of the most dynamic economies in the world today. But Chinas military power is also growing. Chinese military modernization has had cascading effects not just in Asia but also in global terms. This has serious consequences for Asian stability. Chinas military modernisation would directly impact on the region, particularly on countries like India, Japan, South Korea and Taiwan. Similarly, as India modernises its forces, there would be almost simultaneous enhancement of defense capabilities by Pakistan. In addition, there are external powers such as the US whose military power also impacts on the region. This book addresses the increasingly tense strategic situation in Asia as these major powers interact and react to each other.Printed Pages: 382. 104333

The Indian Army and the Making of Punjab
Orient BlackSwan/Permanent Black; New Delhi, India; 2011; 8178243156; Softcover; New;
A handful of Englishmen controlled the vast British Indian empire for nearly two hundred years. Throughout this period, the colonials who ran the empire (viceroys, bureaucrats, military men, police officers) constituted a minuscule minority of the Indian population. That a few thousand British men dominated so many million Indians for so long via ‘native’ collaborators (feudal princes, educated babus, peasant recruits) has long been known. This book looks closely at the Indian army in order to show precisely how collaboration worked to sustain a national empire and a local economy. The British Indian army was the mightiest pillar of the empire. It protected the state from internal danger and external aggression, and it helped fulfill global imperial objectives. The bulk of this British Indian army was made up of Indian regiments, and, after 1857, the largest recruitment into this army was from Punjab. Rajit Mazumder investigates the social, economic and political consequences of the creation and existence of this native army. He argues that Punjab’s military significance resulted in a uniquely interdependent relationship between the colonial state and dominant elements within Punjab. Two-fifths of the Indian army comprised Punjabi peasant recruits. The pay and pensions of these soldiers enabled the recruited classes to live better than their non-recruited counterparts. Punjab was favoured with other benefits: the creation of a vast transport and communications network to protect the north-west frontier grew into the infrastructure on which Punjab’s massive agricultural expansion took place.Printed Pages: 325. 101965

Army Aviation in Modern Warfare
KW Publishers; New Delhi, India; 2011; 9789380502403; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New;
The nation’s general environment comprises men and women with high intellect and the wisdom to evaluate the change that is continuously taking place at a frenetic pace. The nation and the armed forces also need to act accordingly, keeping the national interests uppermost. This book commences with a canvas indicating the present combat environment and the changes that are expected to occur, in which Army Aviation will be expected to function. Subsequent chapters unfold the link Army Aviation will be providing to the management of conflict and combat challenges in the process of crafting solutions for war-time situations. This has already been preceded by an environment in which the soldiers in the sky are preparing to fight the next battle. History and present developments have indicated that there would be an intermix of combat situations wherein there is no war but there is no peace either. There will also be a blurring of lines which transcends the generations in warfare and the means used. The unprecedented range of missions will dictate the expanding and modified roles and responsibilities of aviation, ranging from kinetic delivery to non-kinetic applications of air power. The Army fulfills this responsibility even when constrained in resources. In a shapeless and seemingly troubled future in dealing with modern warfare, this book urges the reader to give thought to the issues dealt with, and beyond.Printed Pages: 312. 104388

Indo-Pacific Region: Political and Strategic Prospects
Vij Books India Pvt. Ltd.; Mumbai, India; 2014; 9789382652632; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New;
The geographic constructs and the geo-political imaginations have dictated the formation of informal dialogue mechanisms and multilateral structures. During Cold War, the power bloc politics have subsumed these geographical definitions and have transcended national sovereign boundaries. In the contemporary discourse, new formulations like Asia-Pacific, East Asia and Indian Ocean have defined new politico-security thinking. The concept of Indo-Pacific is an over-arching geopolitical imagination which addresses new challenges in political, economic and maritime domains. This book addresses this new concept and debates its viability.Printed Pages: 202. 103196

Right from the Himalayan hermit kingdoms of Nepal and Bhutan to the island and archipelago countries of Sri Lanka and the Maldives, the sheer variety of South Asia not only in geographic terms but also in terms of culture, language and tradition is unparalleled. A wide array of religious beliefs existing in the region alongside distinctive mind-sets, tend to differentiate the countries that make up South Asia. The divisions however of the region among countries are not the same as the divisions among cultures/religions. This book titled: Transforming South Asia: Imperatives for Action is the outcome of serious deliberations among well-known scholars, diplomats and policymakers at the Third Conference of the Asian Relations Conference Series organized by Indian Council of World Affairs in collaboration with Association of Asia Scholars in March 2012. Papers presented in the conference were thoroughly revised before publication and editors acknowledge with gratitude these insightful contributions. Most contributors to this volume believe in the pertinence of regional integration amongst various South Asian nations. Specifically, the volume sheds considerable light on the issue of regionalization and co-operation as tools to achieve the much longed for transformation in South Asia. Experts do not shy away from examining issues of conflict and how border disputes have often marred the positive spirit of regionalization as also other mechanisms of SAARC in its day-to-day functioning. Therefore an effort to present the complex reality objectively is visible. Contributors also underscore Indias role in regionalization of South Asia as being far more pragmatic since it has strengthened local synergies, especially at the level of their civil societies.Printed Pages: 258. 104281

Academic Hinduphobia: A Critique of Wendy Doniger’s Erotic School of Indology
Aditya Prakashan; New Delhi, India; 2016; 9789385485015; Softcover; New;
The departments for the study of ancient India (Indology) and South Asian Studies in the West are the last bastions of colonialism today. In the name of scholarship, which is often hatred and racism in disguise, Hindus are routinely characterized as misogynists, oppressive, anti-minority, irrational, violent and debauched. The author terms this mass-produced hate-mongering literature as `Atrocity Literature'. Indian culture, he says, is reduced to `cows, caste, curry, sati and dowry.' If these scholars are to be believed, several sections of Hindu society are apparently in need of being `saved' by those bearing the white (wo)man's burden even today. This volume is a compilation of several path-breaking essays, most of which were published online at the turn of the century. Printed Pages: 440 with 14 b/w illustrations & maps. 109478

The Battle for Sanskrit: Is Sanskrit Political or Sacred? Oppressive or Liberating? Dead or Alive?
Harpercollins India Publishers Ltd./Prakash Books; New Delhi, India; 9789351775386; Hardcover; New; New;
The book explores the battle between Western and traditional approaches to Sanskrit and sanskriti (Civilization). It exposes the dominant Western scholarship, in particular its subversive allegation that the Sanskrit heritage has been a political weapon for social oppression. Without adequate critical inquiry, Indian English-language elites have internalized such lopsided ideas and enshrined them in various mainstream institutions. Controversial and thought-provoking, the book proposes a set of debates for the intellectual kurukshetra (battlefield) pertaining to the social, political, historical and contemporary dimensions of Indian sanskriti. It is intended as a wake-up call to the traditionalists and seeks to inspire a home team to pursue such debates.Printed Pages: 488. 106446

Challenge and Strategy: Rethinking India's Foreign Policy
Sage Publications; New Delhi, India; 2009; 8132100808; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New;
The book examines India’s current and looming foreign policy challenges from a strategic and policy-oriented perspective. It analyzes the long-term factors and trends that should determine the country’s foreign policy formulation. The author urges a reappraisal of India’s approach if it is to become a major player in the complex and rapidly evolving 21st century world. Challenge and Strategy: Rethinking India’s Foreign Policy focuses on India’s immediate and strategic neighbourhood. It also looks at important issues like energy security, economic diplomacy, the interaction between defence and diplomacy, and foreign policy institutions. A unique feature of the book is that it combines the perspectives of a historian, a diplomat and a scholar. With many new out-of-the-box ideas and policy suggestions, it makes a valuable contribution to the ongoing debate on foreign policy within India’s strategic community. This lucid and succinct book is a must-read for policy-makers, diplomats and foreign policy analysts. The corporate and business community too will find it professionally relevant. It is also an important knowledge resource for students of Indian politics, international relations, and defence and strategic studies, and others who are interested in India’s foreign policy. Politics in India (Second Edition)
Orient BlackSwan; New Delhi, India; 2012; 8125042814; Second Edition; Softcover; New;
In this pioneering study of India as a vibrant and politically sustainable polity, Rajni Kothari covers considerable basic ground. Politics in India was first published in 1970 and marks a turning point in the evolution of the author’s intellectual contributions. From the theoretical, historical, socio-cultural, and comparative matrices of Indian polity, this book ranges through strategies, concerns, and issues that strengthen and support India’s tried and tested political institutions and the agencies that promote the country’s national integration. Kothari’s superiority as a theorist and teacher is evident in this book. Its detailed analyses and commentary cover existing and emergent paradigms of Indian political life and action. It also deals with the politics of party system and coalitions, social infrastructure and balanced growth options, including India’s challenges and the greater role it envisages in subcontinental and international politics. The concluding chapter on "Future Perspectives" is Kothari’s helpful pointer towards this prospect.Printed Pages: 504. 101985

Caste in Indian Politics (Second Edition)
Orient BlackSwan; New Delhi, India; 2010; 8125040137; Second Edition; Softcover; New;
Rejecting the prevailing dichotomy between traditional society and modern polity, Caste in Indian Politics examines their interaction in given community and territorial settings. A critical introduction by Rajni Kothari provides the analytical framework. Of the nine studies that follow, four are based on detailed investigation of individual caste movements and structures and their induction into the political process. The other five focus on the macro dimensions of the political involvement of caste. Each essay tries to bring out the substantial change that has taken place in the inter-relationship between the antecedent social structure of Indian and democratic politics and underlies the emerging idiom of social-political behaviour. This second edition has an extended prologue by eminent political scientist James Manor. Manor’s ‘Caste and Politics in Recent Times’ is an optimistic account of the changes and developments in the interplay of caste and politics over the past four decades. He shows how the diminishing influence of caste hierarchies has had widespread implications for the voting patterns of the ‘jati-clusters’ (caste groups.Printed Pages:424. 102005

The Early History of Gold in India
Munshiram Manoharlal Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 1992; 81-215-0548-6; First Edition; Cloth; New; New; 15 Cms x 23 Cms
Despite the magnitude of the discovery, there has never been a full scale study of the gold artifacts uncovered from a number of sites in India. An attempt has been made to reveal the importance of these archaeological discoveries through proper investigation and research. Besides a general discussion on the types of gold objects found, observations have been made on the techniques of gold ornaments in prehistoric and early historic India. The discoveries of the Indo-Greek, Kushan, Roman, and Gupta gold coins indicate the extensive use of the metal in the early historic period. The literary data suggest an abundance, and a wide diversity of gold and gold objects, which is not even remotely matched by the archaeological data. The present work analyses the relevant literary data and emphasizes virtually all important aspects of the Indian and foreign literary allusions to Indian gold. The geology of gold has been exhaustively presented. A detailed consideration of the geological data throws interesting light on the number of areas and ways in which the metal concerned could be obtained. Thus, the present work is an attempt at integration of data of all kinds on the early history of gold in India. The author has tried to bring out a basic history pattern by a systematic and critical evaluation of the available geological, archaeological and literary data. Marriage, Migration and Gender
Sage Publications; New Delhi, India; 2008; 0761936750; First Edition; Paperback; New;
Marriage, Migration and Gender brings a gender-sensitive and comparative perspective to bear on Asian peoples` migration experiences, both within and across national borders. It seeks to examine how the institution of marriage may affect or enable women`s and men`s migration, as well as the impact of migration, state laws and immigration procedures on the marriage, family and kinship networks of Asian migrants. Migration and marriage strategies are discussed through detailed case studies, whether of Filipina (allegedly `mail-order`) brides, transnational Tamil Brahmins, Pakistani grooms in the UK, or Malayali women in Italy, illustrating how marriage migration reflects individual as well as family aspirations for spatial and social mobility. The fluid boundaries between matchmaking and trafficking, as of Bangladeshi or Chinese migrant women, and the political economy of marriage transactions among a range of `economic` migrants—from the Punjab, Andhra Pradesh, and other parts of India—are drawn out. The chapters question conventional dichotomous constructions of emotional versus material considerations in the choice of marriage partner. The implications of migration for conjugal and inter-generational relations, including the increasing distance between natal and marital homes, the intensification of pre-existing socio-cultural faultlines, shifts in culturally normative familial and work roles and the transformation of familial relations have also been addressed. The chapters in the volume highlight the varied forms of women`s agency in marriage and migration strategies. These range from passive to active resistance and the ability to work for change in normative structures. Simultaneously, attention is drawn to the constraints on and opportunities for women`s and men`s exercise of agency, including politico-economic processes, historical and symbolic determinations, cultural constructs, and the social embeddedness of personhood. The contributors are from a variety of disciplines, mostly sociology and social anthropology. Several of them have been activists on the issues that they write about. The volume will be of interest to sociologists, social anthropologists, scholars interested in migration, gender and labour studies, as well as social workers and activists. Competing with the Best: Strategic Management of Indian Companies in a Globalizing Arena
Penguin Portfolio; New Delhi, India; 2008; 0670081787; First Edition; Hard Cover; New; New; 15 x 23 Cm
When after forty years of licence-permit-raj India opened up its markets and took its first tentative steps in the global economy, no one could have imagined that in less than two decades Indian companies would be in a position to shape the global marketplace. With a sea change in their capabilities, beliefs and aspirations, Indian companies today come across as confident, aggressive and world class as they self-assuredly take over multinational giants like Corus. The closest analogy would be to Japanese companies of the early 1970s, and their potential impact on the world of business in coming decades could be as much, if not more. For this, Indian companies need to evolve original approaches, rather than depend on borrowed ideas, to engender inimitable and sustainable advantages in the global marketplace. Rajnish Karki, with over ten years’ experience in research and advisory work on the strategic management of Indian organizations, has evolved strategic management approaches for Indian companies, which are original and are grounded in the Indian economic and sociocultural context. In this book he shows how breakthrough strategic management results from seeing the big picture and aspiring high, conceiving well-aligned business and organizational components, and moving on with clarity, commitment and conviction. Competing with the Best bridges the theory and the practice of strategic management, focusing on under-explored yet globally significant aspects of Indian companies. Using the narrow-angle of eight case studies and the wide-angle of patterns and trends at aggregate level, it identifies four viable and effective configurations for Indian companies and describes the process of transformational and incremental changes. Competing with the Best is perhaps the first world-class book on the strategic management of Indian companies—an important constituent of emerging markets—and will prove indispensable for senior and top corporate executives, as well as researchers and students of management Printed Pages: 256. 022593

The Hindu Widow in Indian Literature
Oxford University Press; New Delhi, India; 2002; 0195658442; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New;
This book examines the theme of widowhood, over the last 150 years, in novels as different as Indira Goswami’ s Neelkanthi Braj Bankimchandra’ s Vishavriksha and Krisnakanter Uil Rabindranath Tagore’ s Chokher Bali and Gora Saratchandra’ s Bada Didi and Charitraheeen Premchand’ s Prema and Vardaan Mohan Rakesh’ s Antaral and Rajinder Singh Bedi’ s Ik Chadder Maili Si. The author shows how these novels written in eight Indian languages— Assamese, Bengali, Gujarati, Hindi, Marathi, Oriya, Punjabi and Urdu— reveal attitudes, often contradictory, towards widows in upper-caste Hindu society. Social Movements in India: Poverty, Power, and Politics
Oxford University Press; New Delhi, India; 2006; 0195678389; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New; 14 x 22 Cm
The role of social movements in Indian politics has always been important, even before independence from colonial rule in 1947. During the Nehruvian era, poverty alleviation was a foundational standard against which policy proposals and political claims were measured. At that time, movement activism was directly accountable to this state discourse. Today, however, the nature of social movements have undergone a transformation. In this volume--the first to focus on poverty and class in its analysis of social movements--a group of leading India scholars shows how they have had to change because poverty reduction no longer serves its earlier role as a political template. With key cases from across states and sectors, the book analyses their role in the constantly changing political landscape. It has distinctive chapters on gender, lower c astes, environment, the Hindu Right, Kerala, labor, farmers, and biotechnology mirroring change and social movements in a comprehensive fashion. With contributions from renowned academics, this informed, accessible, and analytical anthology will be of immense importance to students and researchers in political science, sociology, and history. It will be indispensable for postgraduate courses on social movements. Policy planners and an informed general audience will also find it useful. Printed Pages: 320. 013587

The Origins of the Kashmir Dispute and Pakistan
KW Publishers; New Delhi, India; 2015; 9789383649419; First Edition; Softcover; New;
India and Pakistan have disputed over many ‘facts’ related to their 1947-49 conflict over Jammu & Kashmir but none so heavily as India’s conviction that the government of Pakistan was involved in the tribal invasion of Jammu & Kashmir in October 1947. This study is a re-examination of that conflict, its immediate background and aftermath, against the twin backdrops of de-colonisation and the early Cold War. Simultaneously, it attempts to go beyond and cover the comparatively less written about British interests and initiatives in Kashmir. Covering the early history and the historiography of the dispute, it is a chronologically arranged narrative from the events in Poonch and Gilgit over August-September 1947, through the action-packed months of October-December, the diplomacy around the war, to the summer and winter battles of 1948 and ceasefire of January 1949. It is a story of individuals, issues, the times in which they emerged and their inter-connectedness with the fears and hopes of others who shared that time and space. It is a story of the sub-continental desires and the international within which the dispute evolved in its first two years. It traces a diverse and dynamic geo-political context of the conflict and shows the elements of continuity and change from the historical understanding of the defence of the Indian sub-continent, in the aftermath of its independence and partition. Based on considerable primary and published sources, this study takes a re-look at the hopes, fears and desires of India, Pakistan and Britain from the 1947-49 Kashmir conflict. Emerging alongside the embers of partition of British India in 1947, the dispute continues to smoulder. In this case too, as Ilan Pappe demonstrated elsewhere, the deeply involved British offer the ‘best vantage point’ for describing conflicts in the wake of empire. These can be helpfully understood by situating them in their wider context and by examining the inter-linkages between their local, regional and international dimensions.Printed Pages: 78. 105048
