The Strides of Vishnu: Hindu Culture in Historical Perspective
Oxford University Press; New York ,USA; 2008; 0195314050; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New; 16 x 24 Cm
Books about Hinduism often begin by noting the immense size and complexity of the subject. Hinduism is vast and diverse, they say. Or it doesn't exist at all -- Hinduism is merely a convenient (and foreign) term that masks a plurality of traditions. In either case, readers are discouraged by the thought that they are getting only a tiny sample or a shallow overview of something huge and uniquely difficult. This book is designed to be accessible and sophisticated, holding the reader's interest in the dynamic sequence of ideas through time and place. Each of the 12 chapters combines historical material with key religious, scientific and philosophical ideas, supported by substantial quotations from scriptures and other texts. Historic places and persons are fleshed out as actors in a narrative about the relation of the sacred to ordinary existence as it is mediated through arts, sciences, rituals, and philosophical ideas. Although many books introduce the Hindu tradition, this is the first with a broad historical and cultural focus that emphasizes archaeological as well as textual evidence. Printed Pages: 256. 025639

Shadow War: An Untold Story of Jihad in Kashmir
Vij Books India Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2009; 9789380177106; Hardcover; New; New;
A definitive and very timely history of the Kashmiri jihad by Pakistan's leading reporter. For nearly sixty years, India and Pakistan have battled over the territory of Kashmir. The two nuclear-armed states have fought three bloody wars in the region, but the countries have also fought in the shadows.Having interviewed a thousand militants in war-torn Kashmir, Arif Jamal presents a news-breaking account of Pakistan's secret battles with India. From the early 1980s, when the Kashmiri conflict lurked in the background of the CIA's proxy war in Afghanistan, to the eruption of insurgent violence in 1988, to recent Kashmiri connections to terrorist financing and training, Jamal brings much to light. Shadow Wars reveals that the Pakistani military has trained nearly half a million insurgents and, as a matter of defense policy, continued the conflict in Kashmir at great human cost. Jamal also documents how CIA money destined for the Afghan mujahideen was funneled to Kashmiri jihadis, leading to a twenty-year insurgency rarely discussed in Western media.Printed Pages: 304. 103306

Multiple Voices and Stories: Narratives of Health and Illness
Orient BlackSwan; New Delhi, India; 2013; 8125053794; Hardcover; New; New;
In the field of medical sociology/anthropology, narratives of patients are widely used as an approach to understand social reality and lived experiences. As a theoretical and methodological entry point, they contribute towards defining the scope of discipline, point out the limitations of the ‘positivist language’ of biomedicine, and highlight the role of culture and society in understanding health, illness and suffering in everyday lives. Inspired by the ‘possibilities of narratives,’ Multiple Voices and Stories is a collection of essays on the narratives of health which goes beyond the patients and their immediate families to include midwives, traditional healers, complementary and alternative medical practitioners, health workers, to name a few. The essays are arranged thematically. The first section captures the voices of the care-providers and healers in different settings. The second section narrates the voices of the self in providing accounts of doing health—whether curing an illness episode, living with a chronic illness or engaging in everyday practices of health. The third section goes further by offering two contrasting examples on mental health narratives by showing where and why a narrative approach to medicine works or does not work. The volume also raises important questions like: What functions do these narratives perform? Do they generate evidence? If yes, what kind of evidence? How does such evidence provide an ‘alternative’ to the evidence in biomedicine? Where do narratives stand in the practices of evidence-based medicine and public health? Bringing together essays by well-known scholars, this volume is an indispensable read for students and scholars of medical sociology/anthropology, sociology/anthropology of health and illness, public health, narrative theory, social work and nursing studies.Printed Pages: 336. 101766

Orient BlackSwan; New Delhi, India; 2016; 8125060758; Hardcover; New; New; 15 x 24 Cm
Renowned scholar Arjun Appadurai argues that the economic collapse of 2008, while indeed spurred on by greed, ignorance, weak regulation, and irresponsible risk-taking, was ultimately a failure of language. History of the World: From the Late Nineteenth to the Early Twenty-First Century
Orient BlackSwan; New Delhi, India; 2009; 8125036873; First Edition; Paperback; New; 15 Cms x 23 Cms
Lucidly written by two of India’s well-known historians, this book presents a comprehensive overview of world history from the last decade of the nineteenth century to present times. Using the two world wars as their principal focal points but without in any way being euro-or West-centric, the book chronicles the major watershed events that have shaped and defined today’s world. Beginning with the events that led to the First World War to the events of 9/11, the book comprehensively discusses various events and forces, like the Black people’s struggle for equality in the US, the anti-imperialist and nationalist movements in Asia and Africa, the formation of the United Nations, the Cold War and the construction of the unipolar world. In the entire arrangement of themes, the primary aim of the authors is to establish the interconnectedness of events and their bearing on the progress of world history. History of the World should be essential reading for undergraduate students of history. Students of international relations will also find the book useful. Printed Pages: 288. 031514

Pathways to Power: The Domestic Politics of South Asia
Orient BlackSwan; New Delhi, India; 2014; 812505457X; Hardcover; New; New;
Pathways to Power introduces the domestic politics of South Asia in broad comparative perspective, revealing the interplay between politics, cultural values, human security, and historical luck. While these are important correlations everywhere, nowhere are they more compelling than in South Asia where such dynamic interchanges loom large on a daily basis. Identity politics—not just of religion but also of caste, ethnicity, regionalism, and social class—infuses all aspects of social and political life in the sub-continent. Recognizing this complex interplay, this volume moves beyond conventional views of South Asian politics as it explicitly weaves the connections between history, culture, and social values into its examination of political life. The volume covers the five major South Asian states and includes a comprehensive grounding of the politics of modern South Asia in their shared colonial history, tracing how institutions inherited from British rule— parliament, constitutions, judicial systems, the civil service—have diverged in the context of the different social and cultural forces that shape politics in the successor states of Britain’s South Asian empire. The book examines the many factors that bring together the disparate countries of the region into important engagements with one another, forming an uneasy regional entity. South Asian readers will find useful ways of comparing the five major South Asian countries through consistent themes that enable a richer understanding of domestic politics throughout the region. Although the book is intended primarily for students of South Asian politics, it also serves as an excellent introduction to the politics of the region for the general reader.Printed Pages: 432. 101980

Kipling's India
Aryan Books International; New Delhi, India; 1994; 8173050341; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New;
Rudyard Kipling has been one of the most highly acclaimed writer-poets of the world. His works are widely read, not only in India but all cross the globe. India-its people and culture, its geography and landscapes-has been a central aspect of his creative aesthetic. The object of the present volume is to describe those bits of India which have served as a background for Kipling's songs and stories. From Bombay, the birth place of Kipling and the threshold of India from the West, the scribe will attempt to take the reader in imagination first to Simla, far up on the northeastern border among the Himalaya Mountains which separate India from mysterious Tibet; on into the heart of Himalaya; thence southwest to the Great Rajputana Desert; northward again to the Border Country; from the Border down through India to Burma; and along the haunting road to Mandalay.Printed Pages:172. 100287

Westland Limited; New Delhi, India; 9789384030506; Softcover; New;
‘Anushtup Chatterjee, I am really sorry to have to tell you this. But you have died.’ Anushtup Chatterjee is thirty-two years old. He hates his mother. His job is a dead end. And his girlfriend has left him. Then one silent moonlit night, he wakes up in a deserted field in the middle of nowhere, with no recollection of where he is or how he got there. His wallet is gone. So is his cell phone. He is not alone though. There is another man there, a stranger with a gentle voice and a humble mustache, who has something rather unbelievable to say to him. That he, Anushtup Chatterjee, has already died. Mysterious and achingly poignant, Arnab Ray’s Yatrik is a story about hope and aspiration, love and regret, of the choices we make and those that life makes for us. 109681

There is absolutely no mumbo-jumbo serenading their extraordinaire act. The God-given sprit is in itself a boon to surmount mundane trivialities and transgress into an esoteric realm. The authors, a father-son doctor duo do a tandem act to resonate out this message to the readers. The father's life was tempered by the privation of the 1930s and the fear, then exuberance of the 1960s. From opposite sides of what we once called the generation gap, they join to present their exhilarating science of the human spirit.?This is a book about the spirit. It tells you that, your spirit can actually change the biochemistry of your body for the better. The authors recount their doctor patient interlocution to put up the sordid picture of ailments affecting our society. The authors explicate out how thoughts, words and actions get transmuted into bodily constituents chemical and electrical substances that become vanguard messengers coordinating entire gamut of bodily systems viz. immune system and circulatory system taking account of heart and cholesterol in its very ambit. Foxes make available generous doses of the best medicine one can have : Spirit. The spirit conjoins the mind and the body. They teach us that the body cannot be healthy unless the spirit is whole. So the panacea to all maladies lie ensconced in the wondrous joy, belief, love, forgiveness and prayer. The authors put down their generalised prognosis without prognostication. The authors follow diction imbued with humour, fascination and throbs with profundity of pragmatic life. To reap the maximum with optimal utilisation of our faculties remains the biggest challenge to showcase our discerning ability. And that the horde of doctors fail to realise the acumen of Good Spirit. The authors exhort the medical community to realise that prognosis can act as a stop-gag measure over diagnosis that is by all means a short-stinted measure. Scripture tells us that a merry heart is like a medicine.The Foxes prove it.Making Miracles is veritably a medical doctor's treatise to rejuvenate within a spanking fortnight. It takes its protg to a new high elevating one's spirit, churning out springing health and rendering immune system invincible. This aggrandizement in a holistic manner encompasses almost all facets of health. In situ, all walks of life would benefit its fruition, be it performance in school or workplace or better manage own-persona. And of course, bodily problems right from headaches to ulcers would be mitigated. Foxes? prescription is a time-tested, medical approved programme based on 30 years of experience as a medical doctor. The book bears a direct impact of Reverand Norman Peale's book, The power of powerful thinking that has provided people to tide over the vicissitudes of life with panache. Though the book doesn't brandish any talisman or blurt out some abracadabra, an assiduous and rigorous adherence of the prescribed regimen can steamroll a Homo sapien into a being higher up the evolutionary ladder. On the fifth day, Foxes administer a dollop of the five aspects of love. On sixth day comes the task of Taking control five basic steps, which starts with the Proverb 22 : 39 Seest thou man diligent in his business He shall stand before kings. About grabbing the buck, Foxes take a liberal stand Grabbing the buck is the best thing you can do for yourself. Quite indeed, prayer is hailed as a miraculous medicine. Then again on the eleventh day, the Foxes reveal "How to make dreams come true" Nocturnal dreams are but sound premonitions. Do they come true That largely depends on you. the authors are emphatic about it to convince their readers. On the fourteenth day, the final day the Foxes tell their readers that, the world is what you make of it.This book also prompts doctors to integrate certain faculties imperative for making medical science a success. Deprived of his esoteric philosophy, medical science has hitherto remained a lame duck with its parochialism. High spirits bolster immune system formidable enough. The authors roll down the Ten Pillars that encrypt the ten aspects of a healthy spirit. Reaping one's fullest potential physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually lays the cornerstone of a veritable miracle. Believe it or not, the author says Making miracles is the easiest programme of it's kind to follow. And indeed, all this is a scientific fact without any iota of mumbo-jumbo in it. He exhorts the reader for comprehensive perusal and not a lackadaisical trolling down the pages. And finally integrating it into daily chores would infuse a fresh lease of livelihood.Dr Arnold Fox vouches by dint of being in medical profession for the last 30 years Unhealthy germs of the spirit and mind can destroy our immune systems, weaken our hearts, turn our body chemistry upside down, bring on depression and despair and predispose us to failure in every aspect of life Dr Arnold blares out his warning too "For many of us, this tendency to self-destroy has already set in". The book splurges aphorisms from the Bible and indeed such snappy pithy cut a gnash upon the mind of readers. The maxims with Biblical tenor that have been culled in the book remain vibrant in our present society and compliant in all nook and corner of this terra firma.Printed Pages: 280. 105239

Gun Running and The Indian North-West Forontier
Gyan Books Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 1987; 8121201160; Hardcover; New; New;
The Interest of the British public had been centred on the internal problems of the Indian Empire, and chiefly those connected with the Hindu portion of the population. As a result of the alarming Wave of sedition that swept over Bengal, accompanied by Brahmanical revivals in the two Presidencies, the affairs of the North-West Frontier, together with the problems connected with the Mahommedan subjects of the King-Emperor, had gradually been relegated to a hazardous obscurity, and had not received the attention they deserved. The crisis on the frontier in the autumn of 1910, as a direct result of the suppression of the arms traffic in the Persian Gulf, had the effect of switching the limelight once again on to this most interesting quarter. People were at last Beginning to realize that if the arming of the Pathan belt continued a frontier rising in the future would bean affair of infinitely more gravity than thereto fore. But in spite of this the operations of the blockading squadron in the Persian Gulf were not sufficiently recognized as an integral part of frontier policy, and had attracted attention more from the hazardous Nature of the undertaking than from any bearing that the ultimate suppression of the traffic might have on the tranquillity of the frontier. It was with this object., namely, of emphasizing the connection between the operations of the blockading squadron and the preservation of Peace on the Pathan border, that the author ventured on the publication of this book. Though the book hardly brings the History of the frontier comprehensively and updated, it had proved to be of vital significance due to dearth of literature on the subject.Printed Pages: 228. 105671

Mumbai De-Intellectualised: Rise and Decline of a Culture of Thinking
Promilla & Co., Publishers; New Delhi, India; 2009; 8185002975; First Edition; Paperback; New; 5 x 7.5 Inches
Mumbai in the first decade of the 21st century is evidently on the threshold of a new and prosperous era. Having understood the city's strategic importance, economists are predicting a greater international role for it, while town-planners are working overnight for its make over, expecting in-flow of unforeseen wealth. Paradoxically, however, intellectualism that this progressive, multi-cultural city had inherited is conspicuously on the decline. Whether in social reform or in cultural renaissance, in literature or in performing arts, Mumbai had enjoyed an undisputed position of leadership for well over a century. Today it suffers from intellectual insolvency and cultural slide down. Once known as the most progressive city of India, Mumbai appears to have abandoned the path of enlightenment. The author, in a severe indictment of academicians, media persons, writers and culture bearers, holds failure of intellectuals responsible for this malaise. Printed pages: 206. 029244

Penguin Books India Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2015; 0143424726; Softcover; New; 13 x 20 Cm
Even in ancient India, money is always a good thing and everyone wants it. The stories in The Mouse Merchant selected from the Sanskrit universe, from the period of the late Rig Veda to the twelfth century tells us how money was dealt with in everyday life in ancient and medieval Indian society. At the heart of these tales is the merchant. Sometimes gullible, sometimes greedy ingenious at some moments, dim-witted at others and hopelessly in love with courtesans but also loyal to their wives, our merchant heroes show how innovation in business is sometimes more important than capital. The Mouse Merchant puts these stories into the context of Indian business history, giving not only rare insights into the romance of the ancient seafaring life but also great wisdom about money. A History of Sanskrit Literature
Motilal Banarsidass Publishers Private Limited/Research India Press; New Delhi, India; 2016; 8120800958; Softcover; New;
It is undoubtedly a surprising fact that down to the publication of this book, the history of Sanskrit literature as a whole has been written in English. For not only does that literature possess much intrinsic merit, but the light it sheds on the life and thought of the population of which were of a peculiar interest for the British nation. Owing chiefly to the lack of an adequate account of the subject, few, even of the young men who left Britain every year to be its future rulers, required connected information about the literature in which the civilisation of Modern India can be traced to its sources, and without which that civilisation cannot be fully understood. The work presents a complete history of Sanskrit literature in a condensed and succinct form. It embodies a general study of the Vedic, Epic Puranic, Classical and Philosophical Literature. It sheds light on the life and thought of Ancient and Medieval India as reflected in the literary productions of those periods. Through the brief epitome given in the Appendix on Technical Literature including Law, Science and Arts it and instructive. The bibliographical notes and index appended at the end add to the value and render the work most useful to the reader. Even in this even the outstanding researches of eminent antiquarians have become outdated, the utility of this small work has not diminished by the passing away of the three quarters of a century. Tantrabhidhana: With Vija-Nighantu and Mudra-Nighantu
Chaukhambha Publications; New Delhi, India; 2004; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New;
This work formed the first volume if the famous Tantrik Texts series edited and published by Arthur Avalon (Sir John Woodroffe). The work belongs to the Dictionary Class. The Matrikanighantu and Vijanighantu or Mantra-Kosha by Bhairava Rishi are Dictionaries of the single vowels and consonants of the Sanskrit language. Both, published from ancient and rare (in some cases extinct) manuscripts for the first time comprise the main body of this book. They give the Tantrik meaning of the vowels and then of the consonants with a view to facilitate the understanding of the Tantrika vijas or mantras of that name. Karpura Distotra
Chaukhambha Publications; New Delhi, India; 2004; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New;
The celebrated Kaula Stotra "Lord of Hymns", which is now translated from the Sanskrit for the first time, is attributed to Mahakala Himself. One of the chief features of the Stotra is that it gives the mantroddhara of the Shri Shri Dakshina Kalika. It not only gives the Dhyana, Yantra, Sadhana and Svarupa-varnana of the Mahadevi, but it also contains the Chief Mantras of Dakshina-Kalika. In order that the Hymn may be understood in its various aspects Arthur Avalon has extensive Notes and explanations in respect of its gross meaning. This is followed by the invaluable Commentary by Vimalananda Swami which provides the subtle or the esoteric meaning, according to the teachings of his revered Guru Mahamaopadhyaya Ramananda Swami Siddhanta-panchanana.Printed Pages: 107. 100651

A Constitutional History of India (1600-1935)
Low Price Publications/D.K. Publishers Distributors Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2012; 8175360682; Hardcover; New; New;
In the book The Constitutional History of India<-i><-b> the author has made the necessarily concentrated attention on these matters which appeared to be of special significance as bearing on the evolution of self-government. After the earlier periods administrative and judicial details have, therefore, been passed over.The Indian Civil Service, however, brought with it British political ideas and made English the official language of the higher funations of government. The result was inevitable, with steadily increasing strength the Indian intelligentsia has demanded the fulfilment of self-government in form of British parliamentary institutions.The vital change betweenthe Act of 1935 and 1919 is thus formerly attested; if it was possible to fit the changes then made as amendments into the substance of the old system that was out of the question with the Act of 1935.The new arrangements are obviously suited only for a brief transitional period. It is hoped that the necessary delimitation of constituencies under the Act of 1935 and the investigations of final conditions will be carried out in time to permit in inaugurating provincial autonomy being Part III of the Act into operation in 1937. In the changed conditions there was hardly any chance of Members of the Indian Civil Service attaining governorships and as such there was a further decline in the attractiveness of a service which has conferred great benefits on India but which inevitably must lose authority under the new regime. Our Life After Death or the Teaching of the Bible Concerning the Unseen World (Christian Classics Revived: 11)
Christian World Imprints/B.R. Publishing Corporation; New Delhi, India; 2015; 9789351480693; Reprinted; Hardcover; New; New;
The book outshines an Intermediate or Hades life, a life in which every person enters at the moment of death, in a physically unclothed or disembodied state. It is a mid way existence between the Earth-life and the future Heaven-life. According to the Author, many Christian teachers and writers have barely mentioned the existence of this Intermediate life. And, those who have, enshroud it such, it seems that this life has vague, and unreal existence, i.e., it is a veritable "world of shadows". But, this book shows that Hades life is a real phase of human existence, as is the present Earth-life and as will be the Heaven-life.The sermons embodied in this Treatise, make the exposition more exhaustive and connected. The book is not mere few months' reflection but it is the result of convictions that were maturing within the author for a period of more than twenty years.This intellectual presentation, away from insensible speculations, brings out the real truth of `life after death' from a Biblical perspective thus scaring away those ugly shadows which overhung so much of the theology of the past. It will be helpful to those who are earnest students of God's truth, those who want to delve deeper into the subject including Christian Laity, Church Clergies, Researchers and Students, alike.Printed Pages: 278. 106410

The Voyage of John Huyghen Van Linschoten to the East Indies: from the Old English Translation of 1598, 2 vols.
Munshiram Manoharlal Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 1997; 812150788X; Reprint; Hardcover; New; New; 14 Cms x 22 Cms
Present work narrates with exhaustive notes, the travels of John Huyghen Van Linschoten to East Indies and is based on the English translation (1598) of the first part of his Dutch work Itinerario (1592), which contained the Itinerary proper. Itinerario when originally published in Dutch was considered a revelation. After its publication, everyone learned that the colonial empire of Portuguese was rotten, and that an energetic rival would have every chance of supplanting them. Its importance met with speedy and extensive recognition. English, German and Latin translations were quickly brought out. For long the book was constantly quoted as authority; and as picture of Portuguese India at the end of the sixteenth century, still retains interest. Printed Pages: 728. 016464

Leadership: Lessons From The Ancient World (How Learning from the Past Can Win You the Future)
Times Group Books; New Delhi, India; 2009; 8126520965; First Edition; Softcover; New;
The study of ancient events from a business perspective offers a unique way of observing how leadership actually works. The leaders presented and discussed in this book are significant figures in their own right. Many of the things they did were extremely successful, and the consequences of their failures were just as spectacular. These leaders decided on courses of action within the context of their times, aware of the range of possibilities that were open to them. This allows us to note how they responded in different contexts and how temperament, intelligence, experience and advice came into play as they dealt with pressing problems. The actual methods they used to implement their decisions are also instructive, since they illustrate a choice of approaches still faced by managers as leaders today.Printed Pages: 352. 104713

Sufi Heirs of the Prophet: The Indian Naqshbandiyya and the Rise of the Mediating Sufi Shaykh
Munshiram Manoharlal Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2015; 8121512832; First Indian Edition; Hardcover; New; New; 16 x 24 Cm
Sufi Heirs of the Prophet explores the multifaceted development of personal authority in Islamic societies by tracing the transformation of one mystical sufi lineage in colonial India, the Naqshbandiyya. Arthur F. Buehler isolates four sources of personal authority evident in the practices of the Naqshbandiyya—lineage, spiritual traveling, status as a Prophetic exemplar, and the transmission of religious knowledge—to demonstrate how Muslim religious leaders have exercised charismatic leadership through their association with the most compelling of personal Islamic symbols, the prophet Muhammad. Buehler clarifies the institutional structure of sufism, analyzes overlapping configurations of personal sufi authority, and details how and why revivalist Indian Naqshbandis abandoned spiritual practices that had sustained their predecessors for more than five centuries. He looks specifically at the role of Jama’at ‘Ali Shah (d. 1951) to explain current Naqshbandi practices. Printed Pages: 339. 037922
