Sangitaratnakara of Sarngadeva: Sanskrit text and English translation with comments.Vol. I: Chapter I
Munshiram Manoharlal Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2007; 81-215-0508-7; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New; 16.5 x 25 Cm
This monumental treatise from the 13th century sums up and organises what had gone before, and in doing so provides both master plan and basic topics for subsequent musicological work, even to the present day. The combination of Devanagari text (from the Adyar edition) running concurrently with footnotes, makes the work very convenient. Dr. Shringy's English translation, commentary, and footnotes, makes the work very convenient. Dr. Shringy's English translation and commentary, prepared under the expert supervision of Dr. (Miss) Prem Lata Sharma, is more devoted to a direct explication of Sarngadeva's verses. Its guiding principles (as evidenced in this first volume) are two. First, terms and ideas in the treatise are set in the larger general frame of Indian Sanskritic culture-as for instance a presentation of the Tantric metaphysics behind the doctrine of sound which Sarngadeva took over and elaborated from Matanga's Brhaddesi. Second, complex technical principles are explicated in full-as for instance a demonstration of how to work with the 5040 permutations of kuta-tana "note series" as Sarngadeva all too briefly set them forth. The work fulfils the urgent need for a standard and authentic work on the theory and practice of ancient Indian music in English. The translation provides English equivalents for technical terms, makes constant parenthetical reference to Sanskrit originals in transliteration. Contains a detailed word index, with multiple senses distinguished, and a glossary. Printed Pages: 500. 031729

Sangitaratnakara of Sarngadeva: Sanskrit text and English translation with comments.Vol. II: Chapters II-IV
Munshiram Manoharlal Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 1996; 812150466X; First Edition; Hardbound; New; New; 16.5 Cms x 25 Cms
The present volume of the annotated translation of Sangitratnakara contains the second, third and fourth chapters of the text dealing with raga, miscellaneous topics pertaining to vocal music and prabandha (vocal compositional forms) respectively. These chapters deal with topics that are directly related to current practice. The format of the first volume has been followed in this volume, except a small deviation in the word-index, where a glossary has not been attempted on account of the special nature of the terms contained in the chapters presented here. The vast expanse of terms which is mostly comprised of nomenclature of raga-s, varieties of melodic rendering, prabandha-s and tala-s prescribed therein has been thoroughly scanned and thus the index is a mirror of the totality of contents. While the first volume was preceded by an earlier attempt at translation (without annotation), the second volume presents the above-noted three chapters in English for the first time. This long awaited volume will be a welcome addition to the primary source-material for a study of the rich textual tradition of Indian music. Printed Pages: 416. 031730

Introduction to Human Rights
B.R. Publishing Corporation; New Delhi, India; 2014; 8190821318; Hardcover; New; New;
Human rights are almost a form of religion in today`s world. They are the great ethical yardstick that is used to measure a government`s treatment of its people. A broad consensus has emerged in the twentieth century on rhetoric that frames judgment of nations against an international moral code prescribing certain benefits and treatment for all humans simply because they are human. Within many nations political debates rage over the denial or abuse of human rights. Even in prosperous, democratic countries like Canada much public discourse is phrased in the rhetoric of rights. Legal documents to protect human rights have proliferated in Canada, culminating in the 1982 entrenchment of the Charter of Rights in the Constitution. Especially since the advent of the Charter, many Canadians have claimed that particular benefits they desire are a matter of human rights and must be provided. Indeed, the claim that the desired benefit is a human right is often meant to undercut any opposition as unprincipled or even immoral. Printed Pages: 366. 110445

National Human Rights Provisions
B.R. Publishing Corporation; New Delhi, India; 2011; 8190821326; Hardcover; New; New;
The situation of human rights in India is a complex one, as a result of the country`s large size and tremendous diversity, its status as a developing country and a sovereign, secular, democratic republic, and its history as a former colonial territory. The Constitution of India provides for Fundamental rights, which include freedom of religion. Clauses also provide for Freedom of Speech, as well as separation of executive and judiciary and freedom of movement within the country and abroad.It is often held, particularly by Indian human rights groups and activists, that members of the Dalit or Untouchable caste have suffered and continue to suffer substantial discrimination. Love and Beauty in Shakespeare
Bharatiya Vidya Prakashan; Delhi, India; 2000; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New;
'Love and Beauty in Shakespeare' symbolises fulfilment of a long-cherished desire of mine which could not materialise earlier mainly for a two-fold reason: Carrying a mingled 'culture' of both Eastern and Western Poetics in many mental make-up, I have often been persuaded to record my own perceptions, at times running contrary to those of western scholars or even to those imbibed by fellow Indian teachers of English Letters in the universities. In matters of criticism, let me confess clearly, I have always relied upon my own understanding which I have regarded as 'Intellectual Honesty' in the literary domain.As to the method of treatment, 1 have deliberately avoided narrating the story as a prelude, but have proceeded on the assumption that the plots of the plays are well-known to the learned community of readers. Shakespeare's sources have often been mentioned. As for the texts of the Poems and plays of Shakespeare, the editions of verity and other popular editors both English and Indian, available in Indian markets, have been depended upon.I am elated with sincere joy that my two long-dreamt-of works, to wit, 'A Critical History of the English Muse’, and 'Love and Beauty in Shakespeare', are both appearing before the world of scholars almost simultaneously after a long period of gathering dust where I need to say.I shall feel my labours amply rewarded, should the scholars go through the present work in a spirit of sympathy, untinctured by prejudices, and also appraise me of the shortcomings discovered by them. 103788

Minaksi-Sundaresvara: ‘Tiruvilaiyatar Puranam’ in Letters, Design and Art
Sharada Publishing House; Delhi, India; 2014; 8192698327; Hardcover; New; New; 23 x 29 Cm
The present book deals with the tiruvilaiyatal (Sanskrit lila) myths from the most ancient to the 18th century AD. It is the self-financed report of Dr R.K.K. Rajarajan and Dr Jeyapriya. The reflections of the theme in the art of the Pandya country is cogently traced and illustrated with 140 photographic illustrations. Two chapters deal with the artistic potentiality of theme in Maturai and Greater Maturai. The literary sources are summarized in two chapters. Few western scholars have written on Minaksi, “marriage” and Alakar heading to Vaikai from the literary point of view. The present works brings out the artistic dimension of theme. A chapter on Pandyas deals with their history purely from a literary point of view cursorily reflecting on epigraphical sources. An annexure deals with the Sanskritic sources. Another annexure examines the sculptures in the “New Pavilion” with due reference to the myths that support such illustrations. The work represents a new trekking in art historical scholar-ship, based on Tamil sources. The tiruvilaiyatals as literary motifs have been traced from the ancient (Cilappatikaram 5th century) to the Nayaka period. The photographic illustrations in colour are unpublished and add immensely to visually enjoy the theme. The study shows how a regional theme has acquired national and international recognition by virtue of its many-fold expression in art, thought and literature.Printed Pages: 220 with 7 Plans, 50 Colour & 90 b/w illustrations. 102724

A Comparative Dictionary of the Indo-Aryan Languages, 4 Vols
Motilal Banarsidass Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2008; 812081665X; Hardcover; New; New;
Indo-Aryan is the term applied to that branch of the Indo-European languages which was brought into India by the Aryans and of which the oldest recorded form is to be found in the hymns of the Rgveda. From this there developed on the one hand a literary medium, called sanskrit which has been the vehicle down almost to the present day of a vast literature and on the other hand a great range of spoken forms which used by hundreds of millions have emerged as the chief language (excluding the Dravidian of southern India) of the whole of Pakistan, India, Nepal and Ceylon: Sindhi, Lahnda or Western Panjabi, Nepali, Assamese, Bengali, Oriya, Bihari, Maithilli, Awadhi, Hindi and Urdu, Rajasthani dialects Gujarati, Marathi, Konkani, Sinhalese. Indo-Aryan languages with many archaic features-the Kafiri and Dardic dialects-are still spoken in the valleys of the Hindukush on both sides of the Afghan-Pakistan border, while the Gypsies of Europe and Asia, like the Doms of Hunza, still use forms of the Indo-Aryan dialect they brought out of India. In the far south Sinhalese was carried from Ceylon out into the Indian Ocean to the Maldive Islands. In this book, originally planned to be a volume of the Linguistic Survey of India, the author has tried to do for these languages in their development from Sanskrit something of what Meyer-Lubke in his Romanisches Etymologisches Worterbuch did for the Romance Languages and Latin. Under some 15000 Sanskrit head-words are set out forms each has assumed both in Middle Indo-Aryan (Pali, Sanskrit, etc.) and in the modern languages, thus presenting a picture of linguistic development over some three millennia. The words quoted in this way number about 140000. This volume, compiled by Lady Turner, contains indexes, arranged language by language, of all these words.Printed Pages: 1652. 102571

The Creation of Wealth: The Tatas from the 19th to the 21st Century
Penguin; New Delhi, India; 2004; 0670057746; First Edition; Hard Cover; New; New; 13 Cms x 20 Cms
When Jamsetji Tata started a trading firm in 1868 few could have guessed that he was also opening an important chapter in the making of modern India. Jamsetji saw that the three keys to India's industrial development were steel, hydroelectric power, and technical education and research. A century and a half later, the Tatas can claim with justice to have lived up to the vision of their founder. But the road to success has never been smooth. Appearing for the first time in this edition is the story of how the Tatas, with Ratan Tata at the helm, have had to grapple with change in the post-1992 era of economic reforms. In a frank afterword Ratan Tata talks about the difficulties he faced in implementing change, including resistance from his colleagues. The Creation of Wealth is R.M. Lala's best-selling account of how the Tatas have been at the forefront in the making of the Indian nation not just by their phenomenal achievements as industrialists and entrepreneurs but also by their signal contributions in the field of social welfare. Aboriginal people have been in Australia for at least 40,000 years, speaking about 250 languages. The areal distribution of most features is illustrated with more than 30 maps, showing that the languages tend to move in cyclic fashion with respect to many of the parameters. There is also an index of languages and language groups. Professor Dixon, a pioneering scholar in the field, brings a unique perspective to this diverse and complex material. Contents 1. Vedic Bibliography, Vol. II (Governemnt Oriental Series)
Bhandarkar Oriental Research Institute; Pune, India; 1978; Reprint; Hardcover; New; New;
An attempt is made to present through this second volume of my Vedic Bibliography a more or less comprehensive and critical register of all significant writings dealing, directly or indirectly, with the Veda and allied antiquities including the Indus Valley Civilization, which have been published since 1946, that is, since the year in which the first volume was published. The scope and extent of this volume are similar to those of the first volume, but, with a view to enhancing its usability, I have found it advisable to arrange the material in this volume according to a slightly different plan. The Present volume contains nearly 6000 entries which are classified subject-wise in 20 chapters, these chapters in their turn being divided in 93 sections.Printed Pages: 784. 103022
