The Gold Mine Effect: Crack The Secrets of High Performance
Westland Limited; New Delhi, India; 9789385152016; Softcover; New;
Why are 137 of the world’s 500 best female golfers from South Korea? How did one athletic club in Kingston, Jamaica, manage to produce most of the world’s best sprinters? What’s the reason that the world’s best marathon runners grew up in the same village in Ethiopia? What is the secret behind Brazil’s mass production of soccer super stars? How has one tennis club in Moscow managed to develop more top tennis players in ten years than the whole of the United States?For six months, bestselling author and ex-professional footballer Rasmus Ankersen traveled around the world visiting these six talent gold mines and adapting his findings into a revolutionary business context. He talked, trained and lived with the athletes in order to discover what, if anything, they have in common and to attempt to crack the code of developing world class talent. The result is the gold mine effect, a book which questions all the misconceptions, conventional wisdom and popular theories about talent, hard work, parenting and motivation. Ankersen presents his surprising conclusions in seven lessons on how anyone-or any business, organization or team-can defy the many misconceptions of high performance and learn to build their own gold mine of real talent. 109707

Selections from Galpaguchchha, (Vol. 2: Manihara and Other Stories)
Orient BlackSwan; New Delhi, India; 2010; 8125040978; Softcover; New;
This three-volume English translation by Ratan Kumar Chattopadhyay called Selections from Galpaguchchha is a collection of sixty-one of Tagore’s short stories broadly grouped under the themes of parting of ways, the relationship between men and women, and the power within the woman, respectively. In Volume 2, we find the ever- popular ‘Ramkanai’s Folly’, ‘The Ghat’s Story’, ‘Woman Bereft of Jewels’, ‘Grandfather’, and ‘The Matronly Boy’, among other stories. The travails of a timid man of indomitable honesty who attains a tragic heroism are narrated in ‘Ramkanai’s Folly’, while the theme of ‘The Ghat’s Story’ is the unstated, forbidden love of a young woman for a hermit who may or may not be her long-lost husband. The frisson in the haunting climax of the ‘Woman Bereft of Jewels’, a horrifying morality tale of egotism and greed, is justly famous.Printed Pages: 320. 101890

Inscriptions of Mewar
B.R. Publishing Corporation; New Delhi, India; 2006; 8176465828; Hardcover; New; New;
Mewar was the first and foremost state which made valiant efforts towards the preservation of its freedom. During the earlier period the mighty Sultans of Malva and Gujrat were its chief adversaries who endeavored time and again to subjugate the land. Later on the Mughals and before them the Truks and the Pathans attacked this land on several occasions. The brave people of Mewar successfully encountered these invasions under the able and determined leadership of the Maharanas who valued and cherished freedom more than their lives. During the later times a treaty was signed with the Mughals which cannot be termed as abject surrender. The present work bring out the text and purpose of the majority of important inscriptions of Mewar in a single volume for the first time. The texts would provide greater details to the scholars and afford them an opportunity to form their own opinion about certain happenings mentioned in the epigraphs. The gist and purport would go a long way in satisfying the curiosity and need of casual readers. Printed Pages: 278. 110423

Delhi: The Built Heritage. A Listing, 2 Vols.
INTACH; New Delhi, India; 1999; 8190028197; First Edition; Hardbound; New; New; 22 Cms x 28 Cms
Delhi is a city of continuity. The excavations at purana Qila indicate that the history of Delhi goes back to the first millennium B.C. Delhi is, therefore one of the oldest inhabited cities in the world. It is a city of many layers, each with its own story, where many-a city were built, destroyed and then rebuilt. Many of Delhi’s rulers played a dual role first as destroyers and then as builders. It is ironic that even after independence, we continue to destroy our heritage in the name of ‘development’. This publication by INTACH Delhi Chapter is part of this process. In this publication, we have listed over 1200 buildings that are of archaeological, historical and architectural importance. We have surveyed the many ‘pasts’ of Delhi’s long history and found buildings that are part of that multi-faceted story: the co-existence of diverse sacred centres, educational institutions and administrative structures, homes and palaces, political strongholds, markets, pleasure gardens, memories of war and monuments to peace. This publication contains a varied sample of the multiple layers of Delhi’s ancient history, material evidence of the richness of life and human creativity. However, as listing is a continuous process, we hope to build upon this effort. Printed Pages 737. 029816

Pathways of Empire: Circulation, Public Works and Social Space in Colonial Orissa, C. 17801-1914
Orient BlackSwan; New Delhi, India; 2009; 8125035273; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New;
More and ‘improved’ roads, railways and canals—are they ‘in the public interest’ under all circumstances? Phrases like ‘public works’ or ‘infrastructure’ are rarely subjected to historical reflection. Colonial, nationalist and postcolonial operators have presented their transport policies as if they were informed by the needs of a ‘general public’ and not shaped according to preferences of particularistic forces. Pathways of Empire moves beyond the technocratic progressivism of earlier writings on the history of transport. For the first time theories of ‘produced social space’ are concretised in order to open a new perspective on India’s social history of circulation and infrastructure. Moreover, the prevalent and narrow focus on railways is overcome. The effects of the ‘steam revolution’ are thus located in the wider context of existent South Asian regimes of circulation. Part I of this book develops a conceptual framework of social space that is applied in Part II to the specific historical contexts of the British-ruled districts and princely states of Orissa in the long nineteenth century. It reconstructs the slow transformation of an ancien régime of circulation that largely survived the colonial annexation of coastal Orissa by half century into a new regime of circulation that was well tuned in to the exigencies of colonial capitalism by World War I. Drawing upon extensive and unexplored archival materials, Ravi Ahuja discusses a wide range of issues including caravan and river trade, rural resistance against roads and canals, the effects of the 1866 famine, pilgrimage and migration, the commercialisation of princely states and the modernisation of forced labour. Interesting features of this book are eight historical maps grouped towards the end of the book and a 20 x 30 pull out map which shows in great detail the uneven terrain of Orissa and the feudatory states. The latter is folded and tucked into a pocket on the inside of the back cover. Printed Pages: 376. 031665

Brain Teasers
Jaico Publishing House; Delhi, India; 8172240317; Softcover; New;
Although it is known that God is not equally kind to all of us while allotting to us our share of the dirty looking substance called grey matter, it is equally well-known that it is the environment in which one grows, the way one is taught to use one's brain and adequate brain exercise that have a greater impact on its development.So here is the chance to catch up with others because here in your hands lies the book that will offer you a large variety of thinkers of ticklers and teasers, of squeezers and strangers, that will turn and burst your brain, churn it around and kick it about till all the space in your skull is filled with it.Laid out in this book are twenty one chapters, each having six problems. Moreover the title of each chapter, a well known proverb, is connected with one of the six problems therein and it is left to you to find this connection. You would find great variety in these problems and sparkled amongst these are the odd ones to add a touch of humour and to catch you from the wrong end. Midway through this book lies a page that reads "the Grass is Greener on the other side of the Fence and when you are stuck with a problem just cross over the fence and have a peep at the answer". You would find in this book a good friend by the bedside, and while travelling. Although a great companion when you are alone, this book would not be out of place even on your honeymoon and what is more, it is good as gold whether you are sixteen or sixty.Printed Pages: 228. 105454

India's Foreign Policy in 21st Century
Raj Publications; New Delhi, India; 2013; 9789381234136; Softcover; New;
India's Foreign Policy has always regared the concept of neighborhood as one of widening concentric circles, around a cental axis of historical and cultural commonalities. The guiding principles of India's Foreign Policy have been founded on Panchsheel, pragmatism and pursuit of national interest. In a period of rapid and continuing change, foreign policy must be capable of responding optimally to new challenges and opportunities. It has to be an integral part of the larger effort of building the nations capabilities through economic development, strengthening social fabric and well-being of the people and protecting India's sovereignty and territorial integrity.Printed Pages: 360. 106336

Afghanistan: A Role for India
KW Publishers; New Delhi, India; 2011; 9789380502526; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New;
The Af-Pak region is perceived as the base of global and regional terrorism, with the presence of international terrorist groups such as the Al Qaeda, Taliban, Lashkar-e-Taiyyaba, Jaish-e-Mohammad and other UN proscribed non-state actors as Jamaat-ud Dawa. Hence, stability in the Af-Pak region is of vital interest to India. A stable Afghanistan also relates to India’s immediate foreign policy goals of a peaceful periphery, good relations with neighbours, transformation of relations with the major powers and working with the international community to see a rapid recovery of the world economy. In the past, growing hostility between India and Pakistan placed Afghanistan in the centre of confrontation in a wider dyad of mutual hostility. However, now there is greater acceptability by the international community for a role for India in Afghanistan. As a major stakeholder in regional stability, India’s engagement will remain crucial. India’s growing economic footprint provides it enough leverage to support Kabul in many ways, while the potential for aid and development remains largely untapped. This book is a collection of essays on the situation in Afghanistan from the Indian perspective by a task force of well-qualified experts assembled by the Centre for Land Warfare Studies. The authors’ views reflect India’s interests and priorities, which often differ from the Western perspective. The panorama covers the situation in Afghanistan today, foreign interventions and state building, the emerging strategic environment, US’ Af-Pak strategy, alternative futures, the Pakistani factor in Afghanistan’s stability, and India’s role in nation-building. This work will be a valuable contribution to understanding the extremely complex situation in Afghanistan, from which India cannot disengage itself.Printed Pages: 212. 104385

The Village of Widows
Penguin; New Delhi, India; 2004; 0143031759; First Edition; Paperback; New; New; 13 Cms x 20 Cms
When a diplomat at the Madagascan embassy in Delhi is stabbed to death in mysterious and quite possibly scandalous circumstances, the ambassador calls upon his old friend Jay Samorin to help find the murderer as quickly and discreetly as possible. In his somewhat unorthodox approach to solving crimes, Samorin crosses swords with the police officer in charge of the investigation, Deputy Commissioner Anna Khan, recently transferred from Kashmir where her zealous pursuit of suspected terrorists had threatened to cause an uproar. But it transpires that each has an intensely personal reason for their obsession with murder: Samorin's father, a pilot and war hero, was hanged for the murder of his mother, while Anna Khan's husband was killed by the Kashmiri Mujahadeen. Forming an uneasy alliance, the gifted amateur and the jaded professional start to untangle a shocking web of corruption, prostitution and callous medical malpractice. It is a trail fraught with danger, tainted by the older, deeper mysteries that lie outside the more tangible boundaries of a criminal investigation—a trail leading back through the darkest recesses of their own lives to that elusive, haunted place known as the Village of Widows Printed Pages: 368. 003319

Learning and Teaching English in India
Sage Publications; New Delhi, India; 2006; 0761934650; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New;
This book presents empirical studies on the various factors that influence English language learning and teaching in India. In particular, the author examines whether and to what extent the variables which have been shown to influence second language learning in monolingual countries also apply to the Indian situation which is characterized by multilingualism and multiculturalism. Among the various aspects discussed in this book are Indian students` (and their teachers`) ‘theories’ about learning English; their preferences or styles for language learning; the learning and reading strategies they use to enhance their competence in English; the degree of language learning anxiety they experience; and their attitudes toward, and motivation for, learning English. Ravi Sheorey also explores Indian teachers` judgments of the errors they come across in the writings of their students. The results are compared to studies with subjects from other countries and the implications for the learning and teaching of English are discussed in each chapter. Printed Pages: 226. 028653

No Limits: Media Studies from India (Oxford India Studies in Contemporary Society)
Oxford University Press; New Delhi, India; 2013; 019808398X; Hardcover; New; New;
India after globalization is an increasingly mediatized society. Today, media experiences, desires, dream worlds, and fears have enveloped our time with force that was unimagined before. The blurring of the private and the public is now dramatically visible. The `power of media` is a core explanatory category in public and academic common sense. No Limits maps the emergence of this mediatized world, and reflects on its wideranging consequences. The volume approaches this transformation of India from the prism of media studies. With essays authored by well-known scholars in the fields of cinema, television, radio, music, print, and the Internet, it presents a wide ranging and fresh perspective on our mediamodernity. From media in the colonial era to contemporary experiences after globalization, it provides a long-term, comparative perspective to the present transformations. No Limits maps new connections between old and new media, and sets up questions for addressing past and present. Presenting the media in India as a prism through which millions access the world, this volume will be indispensable to common citizens, students and scholars of sociology, social anthropology, media and cultural studies, mass communication, political science, and history Printed Pages: 440. 110243

The Melodramatic Public: Film Form and Spectatorship in Indian Cinema
Permanent Black; New Delhi, India; 2010; 8178242621; First Indian Edition; Hardcover; New; New; 15 x 23 Cm
What role has Indian cinema played in the history of Indian cultural and political transformations? How have Indian films addressed notions of nationhood, ideas about nation and region, matters of social difference, and conflicts over caste and religion? What cultural visions can be traced through the history of Indian cinema, and how have their co-ordinates changed? What new vistas have emerged—of national territory, new lifestyles, and urban cultures—as India has moved from the early days of state formation, through the unravelling of national consensus, down to contemporary globalization? The Melodramatic Public explores these issues as they play out in different historical moments, and in response to larger theoretical formulations—for example, vis-à-vis the place of film in discourses of secularism and citizenship. At the same time, it deploys the category of melodrama to navigate this variegated field. Drawing on debates in film studies, it reveals how melodrama relates the public and the private, as well as modes of aesthetic expression, in different historical and cultural settings. Vasudevan explores significant crossovers and comparative registers in Indian and American cinema, as well as changes in the nature of Indian cinema and melodramatic form, especially between the ‘classical’ 1950s and the contemporary period. Several features make this a work of seminal importance in film studies. First, it moves away from generalities about the ways in which film represents or contributes to large political and cultural issues: it does so by attending to the specifics of cultural address, film style, and film technology. Second, it analyses the transformation of the film industry since the 1990s in terms of the changing location of cinema in a new globalized environment. Third, it considers the impact of digitization, both in terms of film form and audience engagement, and through the new circuits of distribution and delivery. Vasudevan lays great emphasis on film analysis to explore significant practices and changes in the realm of cinema and the world around it. While primarily focused on popular cinema, his book also devotes attention to the work of Satyajit Ray, as well as to the practices of art cinema and documentarists in present times. Shipbuilding in India: Challenges and Strategies
KW Publishers; New Delhi, India; 2009; 8190743147; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New;
As a maritime nation, warship-building is an essential element of the India's national security strategy construct. India produces world class warships but still lags behind the world leaders in the production of large commercial vessels. Even so, warshipbuilding processes and practices need to be improved further, so that the industry does not impose increasingly high opportunity costs on scarce national security resources. This volume highlights the challenges that bear upon the shipbuilding industry in India, and the response strategies and mechanisms that need to be resorted to, in order to overcome the challenges. It consists of contributions by renowned experts from across the shipbuilding community, be it the yards or their customers, from India as also from abroad. A brief but succinct overview of the industry in the international context is followed by a detailed examination of the state of the industry in India. The chapters that follow then delve deeper into specific issues like infrastructure constraints in Indian shipyards as also material management issues, capacity limitations and the path to indigenous warship building. The volume also highlights best practices and lessons learned from the design, production and procurement processes of some leading European yards. Efficient shipbuilding is not merely a production issue, particularly for warships wherein stringent government specified acquisition procedures often apply. Not surprisingly, many new developments have taken place worldwide in acquisition processes and procedures as well. The warship acquisition process in the United Kingdom and the US Navy’s ship acquisition procedure have also been dealt with in detail, so that appropriate lessons emerge.The volume will, thus, be very useful for policy makers, shipbuilding industry personnel both from the technical and non-technical streams, study groups and individual scholars, both from within and outside the shipbuilding community.Printed Pages: 222. 104432

Marrying in South Asia: Shifting Concepts, Changing Practices in a Globalising World
Orient BlackSwan; New Delhi, India; 2014; 8125053557; Hardcover; New; New;
Marriage has long been central to the study of kinship and family and to imaginings of culture, identity and citizenship. If the deeply gendered nature of marriage has been critiqued by feminist researchers, the conjugal contract has been the subject of debate in the legal domain and the economics of marriage and of the wedding ceremony figure in the discourse on development.Engaging with these and other strands is Marrying in South Asia, a volume which looks closely at Bangladeshi, Pakistani and south Indian Muslims, Bhutanese ethnic groups, Nepali widows, the Sri Lankan Tamil diaspora, south Asian gays and lesbians, middle class and urban, working class communities and many other groups. With the globalising world as the backdrop, the essays trace the encounters with changing notions and practices of marriage. The book examines processes that make a marriage, the implications of non-marriage or its end and the acknowledgement of multiple sexualities, as well as the contestations and conflicts, including in the law courts, that are part of the institution. The integration of the larger economic and political contexts in understandings of personal relations around marriage is significant. The diverse ethnographic accounts, demographic analyses and economic investigations provide a wider window to marriage than is usually available in a single volume.Printed Pages: 440. 101757

Religion, Violence and Political Mobilisation in South Asia
Sage Publications; New Delhi, India; 2005; 0761934308; First Edition; Paperback; New;
An oft-neglected theme in studies on communal violence is the role of the state, particularly of its institutions of law enforcement and policing. Recent experience with religion-based violence in South Asia—particularly, the 2002 riots in Gujarat—has brought into sharp focus this relationship between communal violence and partisan state institutions. The seven essays in this anthology—written by eminent authors from diverse traditions of anthropology, history, politics and sociology—critically re-examine the symbolism, scale and nature of communal violence in South Asia in view of the state’s changing image. Moving beyond cliched explanations of riots, the contributors: - Map the contemporary discourse on Hindu-Muslim violence and focus on the causes of communal violence as well as its long-term consequences - Situate the nation-state within the incidents of violence—variously termed ethnic, communal and everyday violence—that simultaneously frame and challenge the authority of the state - Locate the current discussion on violence and the state in Pakistan, and provide a general thematic overview of religion and state institutions in Pakistan - Expand various categories of violence to present a South Asian perspective vis-a-vis the current western discourse on `global terrorism`. Too Many Men, Too Few Women: Social Consequences of Gender Imbalance in India and China
Orient BlackSwan; New Delhi, India; 2016; 8125062491; Hardcover; New; New;
The gender balance in Asia is significantly shaped by the male-biased sex ratios of two of its most populous countries, China and India. The rapid fertility declines in the two countries, resulting from China's one-child policy and India's two-child norm, combined with the advent of sex determination technologies, has contributed to the birth of fewer girls. As a result of these factors, both countries now have an excess of males and a shortage of females.There is increasing concern over the likely adverse consequences of such highly masculine populations. Most work on adverse sex ratios has dealt with the identification, patterns and causes of skewed sex ratios; Too Many Men, Too Few Women is the first book to focus specifically on the social consequences of the skewed sex ratio in both India and China. Well-known sociologists, economists and demographers come together to explore the social consequences of a skewed sex ratio from varied perspectives: the position of women in communities with fewer women; the likely increase in incidents of crime and violence; the impact on cultural practices such as dowry and bride price, as well as on domestic violence; and possible policy and reform measures that governments can undertake to correct the gender imbalance.Based on new empirical work and ethnographical accounts, this book takes a critical look at demographic approaches and policies in both India and China. It will be essential reading for students and scholars of sociology, as well as researchers, policymakers, and funding agencies involved in population studies and problems related to male-biased sex ratios. Kundalini and Self-Realization: The Journey Back to Our True Home Through Spiritual Energy
Motilal Banarsidass Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2014; 8178224232; First Edition; Softcover; New;
Every human being has spiritual Energy which is asleep below the base of the spine. This Energy, which is responsible for involution and later for evolution, is known as Kundalini in the East, where its related theory is developed to the highest extent. Almost all religions and faiths have their own practices to awaken this Energy, which leads to liberation from falsehood and Self-Realization. The purpose of this book is to show that Kundalini is the common denominator in most religions. It is shown that householders have greater chances of success and lesser problems than celibates. The awakening takes place when the masculine and feminine aspects in the aspirant have come to a balance, and this brings an overall change in the personality, as a result of rebirth. Normally we have a fixed destiny. The "psychic sense" flashes some important events which could be turning points. The exercise of "free will" can change the course of events. Over several life-times the Soul develops a separate personality, called Psychic Being or High-Self, which connects the Soul to God. A person with awakened Kundalini becomes the master of his own destiny, the cycle of death and rebirth is broken and the ultimate reality "Existence-Knowledge-Bliss" is realized.Printed Pages: 253. 102246

Towards a Nonviolent Mind
Paljor Publications/Library of Tibetan Works & Archives; New Delhi, India; 2012; 9789380359618; Softcover; New;
How can we reduce the violence going on around us and lead happier more meaningful lives? What can we do to change a fearful or anxious state of mind into one that is relaxed, happy and compassionate in order to benefit ourselves and others?. In this book, the authors provide impressive answers and practical solutions to these questions. By bringing forward the combined 20-year work of Western Scientists and Tibetan Meditators (including the Mind & Life group led by H. H. the Dalai Lama) Cutting edge research is offered for transforming the mind from a negative to a positive state. The seamless span of History for the past four thousand years of nonviolence practice across major religious, spiritual and secular groups is examined to compliment the wave of success for nonviolent people movements over the past 100 years (included are the Tunisian and Egyptian Revolutions of 2011 as well as the Occupy Wall Street Movement of 2011/12). The authors provide an engaging picture of the problems facing us in today's society like the fear and threat of terrorism, and the broader social concerns of damage to the Environment and declining standards of living. They offer advice to the seven billionth human who has just arrived on the planet and urge the building blocks of universal human values, a global Ethics and a more compassionate way of life which is required if the human species is to survive. We no longer have the luxury of choice between violence and nonviolence. It is now nonviolence or nonexistence.Printed Pages: 312. 103609

Empire in the Age of Globalisation: US Hegemony and Neoliberal Disorder
Orient BlackSwan; New Delhi, India; 2007; 8125031952; First Edition; Paperback; New; 14 x 22 Cm
Empire in the Age of Globalisation is perfect for students of globalisation and international studies. It is a comprehensive critical introduction to the relationship between US hegemony and contemporary globalisation. Many introductory textbooks on globalisation tend to be simplistic and conservative. This book moves things forward, providing a critical review of the globalisation debate. Kiely argues that we can only approach a proper understanding of the contemporary world order by linking globalisation to debates on capitalism, imperialism and universal human rights. He explores US hegemony in this light, showing how ‘liberal internationalism’ cannot be separated from capitalism, neo-liberalism and US empire building. Covering all the major issues, from globalisation theory to international economics, cultural imperialism and global governance, this will be of interest to anyone looking for a refreshing analytical approach.
