Chittorgadh Kirti: Stambha of Maharana Kumbha: The Idea and the Form (1440-50 A.D.)
Abhinav Publications/Kaveri Books; New Delhi, India; 8170173582; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New;
Maharana Kumbha of Mewar, who was the preceptor of Medieval Indian Renaissance, built his greatest monument, the Kirttistambha in the fort of Chittorgadh (Rajasthan) between 1440 and 1460 A.D. It is generally known by the misnomer ‘Vijaya Stambha’ (The Tower of Victory), though it was not built to commemorate a military event. The author has examined here the fundamental question : what was the ‘idea’ which led to its incarnation in such a beautiful ‘form’, under such headings as ‘Mahameru’, ‘Vedic Skambha’, ‘Trailokya-Mahagrha’, and ‘Garuda and Janardana Dhvaja Stambha’; enumerated the classical background of this thought and philosophy; and traced the various stages of its development, and representation thereof in stone. It has been architecturally studied and the sculptures of Hindu gods and goddesses which make it an ‘Illustrated Dictionary of Hindu Mythology’ and a unique work on medieval Iconography, as much as on Architecture, have been identified, Texts and translation of epigraphs including the Kirttistambha-Prasasti (which was carved on four stone-slabs); colophon-prasastis of his literary works; and Vastu-texts on Kirttistambhas have been given in 12 appendices. The text is adequately illustrated by 16 figures and 48 b&w plates. Printed Pages: 254. 107907

B.R. Publishing Corporation; New Delhi, India; 2010; 8176467170; Hardcover; New; New;
It studies such distinctive features and monuments of Medieval Indian Architecture as `Chittorgadh Kirtti-Stambha`; `Gujari-Mahal of Gwalior Fort`; `Kushk-Mahal of Chanderi`; `Design of the Tombs of Sasaram`; `Navgraha` (Nine-House) Plan of Mughal Buildings; `Meaning and Purpose of Minar`; `Fauna and Flora`; `Kashikari (art of glazed-tiling); and temples of Sri-Govinda-Devaji. They belong to different architectural styles and sub-styles, and they are both `Hindu` id `Muslim`. `Medieval` architecture ;s not mean `Muslim` architecture alone. Such Hindu buildings as the Kirtti-Stambha of Maharana Kumbha at Chittorgadh (1440-60 A.D.); The Gujari-Mahal of Gwalior Fort (1486-16) and temples of Sri-Govinda-Devaji (from Vrindaban to Jaipur, c. 1534-1727 A.D.) which have been studied here, were built during the medieval period, and these too constitute Medieval Indian Architecture, and represent the main trends and currents of Medieval Indian Civilization, as do the typical Sultanate and Mughal monuments. The last chapter full Monograph on the itinerary of Sri-Govinda-Devaji, and his nine temples built on the way, from Vrindaban to Jaipur, from c. 1534 to 1727 A.D. when the deity was fleeing from the iconoclastic decree of Aurangzeb and, in a greater degree, it also deals with the metamorphosis of the Hindu Temple, and the deity, from the classical to folk. The Kachhwahas of Amer-Jaipur played an extremely important role in this temple movement, which has been highlighted in this work, for the first time. Printed Pages: 299. 110279

Whistling in the Dark: Twenty-One Queer Interviews
Sage Publications; New Delhi, India; 2009; 8178299216; First Edition; Paperback; New;
Whistling in the Dark: Twenty One Queer Interviews is a book on gay narratives from India and other countries in the form of 20 interviews with homosexual/bi-sexual men and a lone interview with a woman. The interviewees represent a cross section of society ranging from university professors, gay rights activists and students on the one hand to working class men such as office boys, autorickshaw drivers, and even undertrials who have served prison sentences on the other, conducted in the manner of a sting operation. They shed light on major issues in the field of sexuality studies such as sexual identity, sexual politics, the institution of marriage, hetero-patriarchy and hetero-normativity, homosociality and the segregation of sexes, masculinity, women's rights, section 377 of the Indian Penal Code, police atrocities against gays, gay bashing, sex in jails, sex tourism, and so on. The narratives are queer, not just in the sense of being with persons who posses a queer sexuality but also because they go beyond the conventionally decorous questions put to interviewees by their interviewers, and enter the very private lives of the respondents and the private spaces they inhabit. Urbanization and Urban Systems in India
Oxford University Press; New Delhi, India; 1997; 0195629590; First Edition; Paperback; New;
This substantive and original contribution to the study of urbanization in India critically analyses the strengths and weaknesses of the Indian urban system and provides new insights into contemporary urban problems. The author's perspective of urban development in India interrelates the geographical dimension with historical and socio-economic aspects. The book focuses on the processes of urbanization and the nature of interdependence among urban centres and between urban centres and their hinterlands. The approach is at the macro level. The first chapter provides an overview of studies of urbanization in India, and a detailed chapter on the history of urbanization follows. These provide the necessary background to the chapter on urbanization processes. The locational aspects of urbanization are covered in the next five chapters which discuss the problem of defining an urban place, spatial patterns of urbanization, classification of cities, theories of settlement location and the analysis of settlement systems. The relationships between a city and its surrounding area are then studied at two levels - the larger area of city dominance and the city fringe area. Finally, the author examines the fundamental issues involved in framing a national urbanization policy, and expresses the hope that the development of smaller cities and towns may provide some relief from the problems of overcrowding and unplanned growth. Hindu Nationalism and the Indian Church: Towards an Ecclesiology in Conversation with Martin Luther (Interfaith Treasures Uncovered: 1)
Christian World Imprints/B.R. Publishing Corporation; New Delhi, India; 2013; 8192512169; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New;
In this book, the author attempts to re-construe an Indian ecclesiology vis-a-vis the narrowly defined ideals of Hindu nationalism in contemporary India by analyzing and investigating the ecclesiological thoughts of Martin Luther, the 16th century Protestant Reformer. The book brilliantly places the teachings of the Reformer within `the social and historical travails of that time and brings them to bear on the ongoing constructive task of living into a relevant and appropriate Indian ecclesiology (and thereby, Indian Christian theology) today'.In this process, it is being maintained that the Indian Church must transform itself into a "Perichoretic Communion", in which the diverse Christian ethnic groups and the plurality of cultures of India must interpenetrate in order to form one unit, while keeping their respective ethnic, linguistic and cultural identities intact. The author draws his insights from Luther's fundamental theological/ ecclesiological principle: unity of the opposites or distinction and integration, and passionately proposes that it must be the principle of the Indian Church today. This theological writing presents an important and pioneering opus. It clearly focuses on contemporary contextual issues, concerns and challenges, and offers insights of general validity, not only for the Indian world but also from a global perspective. It is a timely volume and is well advised for the worldwide Church and the public at large.Printed Pages: 490. 106421

Ragalaksanam of Sri Muddhuvenkatamakhi
Indira Gandhi National Centre for the Arts/MLBD; New Delhi, India; 2010; 8120834089; Hardcover; New; New;
The Ragalak?a?am was composed by Mudduve?ka?amakhin in Tanjore in the early eighteenth century CE. It is an important text of Karnataka music and appeared in an effervescent epoch in the development of this music system of which it deals only with raga.It collects, classifies, codifies and characterizes the entire music base of the Indian peninsula. The author was a musician, musicologist and music composer of high order. His contribution to the world of music is twofold; systematization of the theory of raga content of his times and creating music to crystallize the character and scope of each raga described. The author derived his inspiration from his great-grandfather, Ve?ka?makhim who revolutionized the theory and practice of Indian music through his scheme of seventy-two melas. His Caturda??iprakasika illustrates the four fun dam en tal components ( da??i of music-gita, alapa, ?haya and prabandha, which his paramaguro (teacher's teacher) Tanappa postulated and illustrated. His own guru was his father Govindadik?ita who made the first da??is in practice in his Sa?gitasudha. Thus a line of four important musicians musicologists-composer of south India - Tanappa, Govindadiik?ita, Ve?ka?amakhin and Mudduve?ka?amakhin -built up or reorganized a textual tradition which supported a living dynamic tradition of performed music in which hundreds of composers, thousands of performers and countless listeners endeavoured to continuously strengthen and nourish it. The Ragalak?a?am marks an important phase of this great evolution.Printed Pages: 393. 101614

Zero Waste Economy: Theological Insights for Urban Sustainable Waste Management
Christian World Imprints/B.R. Publishing Corporation; New Delhi, India; 2016; 9789351481454; Hardcover; New; New;
One of the major concerns of the present society is the rampant consumerism and the malignant throw away culture, which has resulted in the accumulation of waste. Regardless of urban or rural area, nobody wants rubbish in their backyard. The theology that emerges from the present research is garbology which states that whatever God has created is `good' and `holy'. The `good' is considered sacred and useful; and the useless is waste and therefore must be thrown out. The author asserts that the management of waste is required so as to keep our environment `good' and `holy'.The book outshines various means of managing waste such as reducing usage, recycling or reusing and making the waste organic/degradable and thus returning it to nature so that nature can easily assimilate it.The present research brings out the scenario of solid waste disposal in Vilappilsala, a typical Kerala village in Thiruvananthapuram District. The village having experienced the garbage imperialism from the city dwellers, resisted dumping and finally succeeded.The book seeks to find an alternative and proposes a theology of zero waste which will ultimately lead to a zero waste economy. God has created everything `good' and `holy' and the book pinpoints the human responsibility to address the waste situation. Printed Pages: 181. 113689

Aristotle’s Philosophy of Science
Global Vision Publishing House; New Delhi, India; 2003; 8187746645; Hardcover; New; New;
Aristole was primarily an encyclopedist and with the partial exception of Democritos, he was the first one. Earlier philosopher had tired to explain the universe, but Aristotle, who shared their ambition, was the first to realize that such an explanation should be preceded by as complete an inventory and description of it as possible. He did not simply understand that need but, what is more remarkable, he satisfied it. The totality of this works represents an encyclopedia of the available knowledge, much of which was obtained by himself or because of his leadership. It is easy to find holes or errors in that encyclopaedia, but the amazing thing is that it was as good, as comprehensive and durable, as it was. This book will give various facets of Aristotle?s vast knowledge of science. Printed Pages: 302. 110078
