Why We Love the Way We Do
Westland Limited; New Delhi, India; 9789385724183; Softcover; New;
Is it possible to tell if it is love or lust? How important is sex in a relationship? Why do break-ups hurt so much? How often should you message a person you fancy? How do you tell if someone is too young or too old for you?When it comes to relationships, these are the questions that most of us ponder. No matter how young or old we are, we are all looking for ways to make our relationships better. The best way to do that is to understand what makes us behave the way we do.Why We Love the Way We Do is a collection of essays on relationships based on Preeti Shenoy’s hugely popular columns in a national daily, in which the bestselling novelist discusses some of those issues and questions that people in relationships, or those hoping to be in one, face. The topics range from those particular to our modern, technology-filled world: how to move from an online relationship to a real-life one, how to find and keep love online, whether casual sex is worth the effort; to those immortal issues such as how men and women communicate differently, how to deal with a broken heart and how jealousy ruins a relationship.Filled with wonderful insights, sharp observations, humour and real-life examples, and written in her trademark lucid style, Preeti Shenoy brings to this book a perceptiveness about love and friendship that has made her the country’s highest-selling woman writer. 109747

Gender Discrimination in Land Ownership
Sage Publications; New Delhi, India; 2009; 8178299429; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New;
Contemporary India demonstrates a curious labyrinth of land ownership patterns and rights for women co-existing in various states and the inter-regional and intra-regional differences between communities and caste groups. Initiated by the Centre for Rural Studies of the Lal Bahadur Shastri National Academy of Administration, Mussoorie, this volume is a collection of essays on Land Reforms in India by social scientists across disciplines from fourteen different states. The editors offer an in-depth analysis of the laws governing access and control of land and its ownership by women in the various states of India. They examine the diverse ways in which discrimination is experienced by them in their respective states and propose ways to counter this rampant gender inequality. With the help of data the book shows the differences in land ownership patterns and land rights for women across regions, communities and castes. It understands how and why the state laws in relation to agricultural labor, tenants and other farmers, land ceilings, allocation of surplus lands, distribution of ownership titles and other land reforms have failed to accommodate women. Gender Discrimination in Land Ownership examines the dominant role played by cultural and customary practices in depriving women of legal rights which they may have had, and proposes ways, based upon extensive field work as well as interaction between legal experts, social activists and bureaucrats, to counter gender inequality in all the major zones of India. This interdisciplinary study with its wide contemporary reach will encourage debates on existing society and the augmentation/implementation of laws and rights required to establish a more just and equitable society. Press and Politics in India 1885-1905
Munshiram Manoharlal Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 1970; 8121504090; First Edition; Cloth; New; New; 14 Cms x 22 Cms
The two decades following 1885 constitute a germinal period in the history of Modern India. The general upsurge in the wake of nineteenth century renaissance began to express itself passionately in animated discussions and in the formation of political associations of which the Indian National Congress was a manifestation. The consequent release and interaction of such diverse forces as imperialism and independence, nationalism and separatism, obscurantism and enlightenment, moderation and extremism let to a strange alignment of political forces that have shaped India's political destiny. Besides depicting the variegated hues of this eventful period, the present study breaks new ground by analysing the hopes and aspirations of the people as reflected in the contemporary press. In the age of manually operated printing machines, journalism was so to say a cottage industry of the intelligentsia which had perceived the potentialities of this medium as a disseminator of views. After Ripon's repeal of the Vernacular Press Act, the development of press was so phenomenal that newspapers, more than any other institution, were reverberating the throbbing pulse of Vivekananda's age. This projection of the fourth estate adds a new dimension to the study, and, at the same time rescues from oblivion of the role of journalists (many of whom belonged to the vernacular press) who nourished nationalism at the grass roots and widened the base of freedom struggle. Events like the mass upheaval at the partition of Bengal, the Surat split in the Congress, the foundation of the All India Muslim League, legislative and constitutional reforms and the development of Paramountcy can be viewed in a new perspective. Managed Chaos: The Fragility of the Chinese Miracle
Sage Publications; New Delhi, India; 2009; 813210076X; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New;
Managed Chaos reads into the resounding events of Chinese politics and economy, ending the schizophrenia that the readers have lived with. It delves deep into both elements: the economic narrative that China has sustained a near 10 per cent growth rate for 30 years and the political narrative that China is an increasingly fragile state, trapped in an incomplete transition from a totalitarian to a democratic market economy. For the first time, in his reading of China, the author consolidates this paradox by inferring that the cause behind both the growth and the political discontent is the politics of China. The defining features of this book are: " Armed with an original application of Michal Kalecki's theory of intermediate regimes, this book provides an explanation of China's explosive growth. " It indicates the formation of a new stratum, through winding up of centralised planning, the stratum of 'proto-bourgeoisie', consisting of the local cadres of the communist party, who can counter the central cadres for capturing investible resources of the state. " It creates a single politic-economic model that explains China's economic and political development. The causal connections in the model make it possible to predict China's future, and the challenges it faces. This book makes a significant contribution to the literature on Chinese political economy over the last three decades. It is a must read for all informed and serious readers. Policy makers and those studying international relations and politics will also find it useful. Printed Pages: 204. 028134

Development of Ladakh Himalaya: Recent Researches
Kalpaz Publications/Gyan Books Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2002; 8178350955; Hardcover; New; New;
Ladakh is one of the highest land in the world. The altitudes of the major inhabited areas in the region vary from 8,787 ft. in Kargil district to around 20,000 ft. in some places in Chang-Thang sub-division of Leh district. High altitude climate is notorious for its extremes. The raging duststorms on summer afternoons, seldom cloudy an unexpected snowfall are the uniqueness of this region.Ladakh, though, difficult part for the researches yet there is urgent need to have more pragmatic, problem oriented and field based research. The foregoing analysis gives a very dismal look for the coming years unless a new environmental ethic is involved wherein the nature of research, appraisal of the resources and the characteristic socio-economic aspects and the development measures will have to be reoriented so that these provide the basic outline for working out concrete strategies for dealing with the problems in the most appropriate manner.Printed Pages: 308. 106049

The Illustrated Premchand: Selected Short Stories
Oxford University Press; New Delhi, India; 2006; 0195684184; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New; 15 x 23 Cm
Munshi Premchand needs no introduction. In this collection, twelve stories from his oeuvre, carefully adapted and specially illustrated keeping young readers in mind, offer a vivid glimpse of life in the villages and small towns of north India. Each story is unique in its own way. ‘The Road to Salvation’ traces the theme of revenge and human folly, while ‘January Night’ is as much about the plight of Halku, a poor farmer at the mercy of the local landowner, as it is about the bond he shares with his dog Jabra. ‘A Catastrophe’ narrates the suffering of an old, destitute widow, and shows that bad deeds never go unpunished. ‘Penalty’ is a surprisingly short story about finding kindness and sympathy in a cruel world. ‘A Lesson in the Holy Life’ varies the tone of the volume with its humorous dig at fake saintliness. ‘Festival of Eid’ celebrates young Hamid’s act of love and sacrifice over the childish self-centredness of his friends. The self-appointed arbiter of correct social behaviour in ‘A Car-Splashing’ makes ‘good’ his escape in the end before himself coming to be judged. ‘The Story of Two Bullocks’ is a moving account of the close companionship shared between man and animal. ‘The Thakur’s Well’ exposes the cruelty of a caste-ridden society. ‘My Big Brother’ is a tender yet comic story about the changing relationship between two brothers. ‘The Naïve Friends’ looks at the misadventures of Keshav and Shyama as they go about trying to safeguard the eggs of a bird which has made a nest in their house. And finally, ‘The Power of a Curse’ is a dramatic tale of human deception, wrongdoing and its effects, and fear of divine retribution. The simplicity of these stories of everyday life and the accompanying visuals will delight young readers and Premchand fans alike. 027232

The Second Wife
Orient Paperbacks; New Delhi, India; 812220418X; Softcover; New;
As an example of woman-centric literature which faithfully portrays its social milieu and era, The Second Wife stands in its own class. The novel marks the progress of the literary revolution generated by Premchand whereby realism and social relevance replaced the fantasy genre as central themes in Hindi literature.Charming and cultivated, the 15-year old Nirmala is married off to a middle-aged lawyer with three children... Human emotions like suspicion, compassion, jealousy, regret, anger and insecurity interplay with each other to give the novel its own ruthless logic which carries it forward to the ultimate tragedy.This book, titled Nirmala in Hindi, is the most recommended of Premchand's novels because of its narrative force and literary quality.The translator, Dr. David Rubin, American scholar and novelist, received his Doctorate in Comparative Literature at Columbia University, USA, and later taught Hindi literature at the same university.Printed Pages: 208. 106659

Karmabhumi
Oxford University Press; New Delhi, India; 2006; 0195676416; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New; 14 x 22 Cm
Premchand s Karmabhumi is set in the Uttar Pradesh of the 1930s. By the beginning of the 20th century, Islam and Hinduism had coexisted in India for over a thousand years, and barring the occasional outbursts of violence, the two religious communities had lived together peacefully and shared strong social bonds except marriage. English education, however, drove a wedge between these two communities. India of the early 1930s consisted of a great mass of poor and illiterate people who were exploited by the rich and powerful, irrespective of eithers caste or religion. The author s sympathy for these poor and toiling masses are clearly reflected in his writings. It is against this backdrop that Premchand wrote Karmabhumi. Being greatly influenced by Gandhiji s satyagraha movement, Premchand weaves this novel around the social goals championed by this movement. Human life is portrayed as a field of action in which the character and destinies of individuals are formed and revealed t hrough their actions. Some of these actions, which might seem melodramatic in ordinary realistic fiction, gain resonance in Karmabhumi, placed as they are within this symbolic and philosophical framework. Each character (or group) is depicted as coming to a point of moral awakening where he, she, or they must act on their convictions. The climax of the novel takes place in an assembly of the poor and dispossessed, where they voice their demand for land. The youngest of the speakers is put to death by a policeman s bullet but this incident eventually leads to victory of the cause of land for the poor. Printed Pages: 448. 014138

Celluloid Deities: The Visual Culture of Cinema and Politics in South India
Orient BlackSwan; New Delhi, India; 2010; 8125040080; Softcover; New; New;
Towering billboards featuring photorealistic portraits of popular cinema stars and political leaders dominated the cityscape of Chennai, throughout the second half of the twentieth century. Studying the manufacture and reception of these billboards—known locally as banners and cutouts—within the context of the entwined histories of the cinema industry and political parties in Tamil Nadu, Preminda Jacob reveals the broader significance of these fragments of visual culture beyond their immediate function as pretty pieces of advertising. The author analyses the juxtaposition of cinematic and political imagery in the extra-cinematic terrain of Chennai’s city streets and how this placement was pivotal to the elevation of regional celebrities to cult status. When interpreting these images and discussing their political and cultural resonance within the Tamil Nadu community, Jacob draws upon multiple perspectives to give appropriate context to this fascinating form of visual media.Printed Pages: 320. 101868

Noblemen and Kinsmen: History of a Sikh Family
Munshiram Manoharlal Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 1999; 8121509149; First Edition; Hardbound; New; New; 14 Cms x 22 Cms
Noblemen and Kinsmen is a rich and illuminating family history. Preminder Singh Sandhawalia cats his eye over the personalities and life-style of members of his family from various generations, dating back to the seventeenth century and beyond. He introduces us to noblemen in Maharaja Ranjit Singh's court, to conspirators against the British Government in their quixotic attempt to recover the throne of Punjab for their collateral Maharaja Dalip Singh and to the present generation of kinsmen who are judges, soldiers and engineers and also claimants to the 'Kohinoor', a priceless 186 carat gem of dazzling beauty. This is the history of a remarkable family recounted in a pithy, engaging and thoroughly readable style. The author's prose remains sharp and fresh from cover to cover, and his manuscript exudes a powerful and highly infectious energy. The observations, characters and situations portrayed are relayed in vivid detail, so that each moment has a kind of living authenticity. The book's fluidity and natural tone belie its intricate construction, yet there can be no doubt that Mr. Sandhawalia took a great deal of time selecting and ordering his material with the requirements of the modern reader very much in mind. Brhaddesi of Sri Matanga Muni, Vol. I
Indira Gandhi National Centre for the Arts/MLBD; New Delhi, India; 1992; 8120810317; Hardcover; New; New;
The B?haddesi ascribed to Mata?ga Muni, and most probably belonging to the sixth century CE, is a landmark in Sa?gitasastra for more than one reason. It is the solitary text that forges a link between Na?yasastra and Dattilam on one hand and Abhinavabharati on the other, the gap extending over more than 500 years. Its direct influence on later texts like Sa?gitaratnakara and its commentaries is obvious in various ways, be it nada from the tantric stream or the etymology of various terms or the description of ragas. Speaking of sa?gita, the B?haddesi is the first extant text to describe Raga, to introduce sa ri ga ma notation, to usher in a fresh approach towards sruti, svara, grama, murcchana, etc. and to introduce prabandha, the compositional form independent on drama, to establish the concept of desi and its counterpart marga and to mention ethnic groups like sabara, pulinda and naga in the context of bha?as (varieties) of grama-ragas. The volumes present the first critical edition of this well- known, but almost inaccessible text, along with variant readings, an English translation, textual notes and annotations.Printed Pages: 211. 101604

The Kangra Valley Rail
Niyogi Books; New Delhi, India; 2016; 9789385285417; Softcover; New;
The Kangra Valley Rail is a wonderful way to explore the rustic charms of Kangra in Himachal Pradesh. The journey from Pathankot to Joginder Nagar takes almost 8 hours, following the line of the snow-clad Dhauladhars through landscapes that move from the sub-tropical to the alpine, through time and history. The book is a travelogue/guide that introduces the reader to the variety one encounters from the pilgrimage sites, the forts and ruined palaces of kings immortalised by the local bards and miniature painters, people, local architecture, cuisine and the story of Himalayan tea, and the exiled world of Tibet. The Female Supernatural Being in Contemporary Gothic Literature and Film
KW Publishers; New Delhi, India; 2014; 9789383649273; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New;
This paper was originally prepared in partial fulfillment of the requirements for an MA degree in contemporary English literatures from Leeds Metropolitan University. The work is heavily focused on supernatural elements in the relevant texts examined here, with an emphasis on the female supernatural being and her evolution in both literature and film. Psychoanalytic examination and a close analysis of the relationships between supernatural elements and the current social scenario, are used to provide a few possible explanations for both the purpose and need for the changing role of the female supernatural being in contemporary fiction. One example is the analysis of the eponymous and possibly spectral character in Toni Morrison’s Beloved. Whilst the treatment of race and racism has been studied by a number of critics, this paper is an attempt to bring focus on the portrayal of the feminine and masculine, mother–daughter duality and the fading boundaries between past and present through a feminine form. Other works examined in this paper include Kim Harrison’s Dead Witch Walking, Stephen King’s Carrie and the films The Exorcist and An American Haunting.This paper is in no way a complete and a thorough study of the female supernatural in contemporary fiction. It is an attempt to study and speculate on the female occult in the selected texts and films, with the aim of providing a few ideas on the purpose behind the changing roles and image of a popular group of fictional characters.Printed Pages: 94. 104255

The Shepherd Lies
KW Publishers; New Delhi, India; 2010; 9789380502212; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New;
Betrayal flavours all. There is nothing more to be said about the one who walks our darkest alleys, that each of these poems don’t already whisper of. They’re near-silent, but listen to their dark hues that spread light on every form of this ever-black atrocity. We try to forget that it lurks: a mist that weakens, takes and breaks parts of us into shards sharp enough to tear away the rest. Broken promises, wrong directions, purple lies, soiled signs and shattered crayon-dreams. Love is always a victim, you see, she likes attention, so her pain is well known. But there are those that dwell in the intricacies of our minds that also fall prey to the dark. Friendship: has he never been bruised? Or even hope, whose wings tempt the liar, the thief and the mother of doubt? Courage can soon enough be proven a fool, and joy: an idiot. But the one who bleeds more often than not, is the mirror’s portrait. Think about it: how often have you lied to you? The Shepherd Lies. Oh yes he does, and we know it. Someone is to bleed, and though we know that too, we forget that we are all soft bleating lambs in masquerade. No one is safe and the axe strikes fast, each time carving away a precious piece that only then we realise we needed. Each poem has a story to tell. How you taste the words is for you to decide. I can only hope that the muse is satisfied with what she writes through my insignificance. But do tell: Do they speak to you? Can you see it too? Or has the Shepherd tainted your canvas, little lamb?Printed Pages: 88. 104408

Jack Welch is a legend in American business. After rising to become General Electric's youngest CEO ever at the age of 45, Welch embarked on a massive transformation of GE, making it leaner, less bureaucratic, and much more competitive. Although he was harshly criticized at the time, his policies propelled GE on a tremendous path, rising from a market value of $14 billion in 1980 to $410 billion in 2004. In the process, he turned an aging, slow-moving American business behemoth into a nimble, resilient, and entrepreneurial enterprise, leading many observers to conclude that GE is now the best-managed company in the world. Moreover, as the success of Welch's approach became evident, his policies began to be adopted by other CEOs across corporate America. Welch is particularly famed for demanding measurable results from his subordinates and for having a policy of firing the bottom 10% of his managers every year; while, at the same time, providing lucrative bonuses and stock options to the top 20% of performers. During his tenure, GE made hundreds of acquisitions, many of which helped GE to dominate markets outside the U.S., and also helped to diversify GE from a purely manufacturing company to a mixture of manufacturing, finance, and services. Since leaving GE, Welch has remained very visible through writings, media appearances, consulting, and teaching. As a result of his powerful presence on the business scene, a new phrase has emerged in regard to CEO decision-making: What Would Jack Do? In 1999, Welch was named Manager of the Century by Fortune magazine.Printed Pages: 304. 104737
