India in 1858: A Summary of the Existing Administration Political, Fiscal and Judicial of British India Together with Laws and Public Documents Relating There to From the Earlist to the Present Time
Gyan Books Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 1986; 8121200237; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New;
After the Sepoy Mutiny of 1857, the Indian Empire of The East India Company was taken over by the British Crown for direct administration. The Mutiny and its causes and impacts riveted interest of all communities of England on India. Obviously the Civil Government and Military Defence had to be reorganized and it was necessary that all concerned people should know what the actually existing system on which India had been depending was. At that moment, Indian taxation, law, and judicial procedure were the subjects of controversy in and outside the British Parliament. Many facts related to those subjects had to be made accessible to all concerned. These documents and facts are buried in the folios which contain the minutes of evidence obtained by the Parliamentary Committees and contemporary histories of India, interwoven with opinions, criticisms and suggestions. The purpose of the volume, originally published within a year of the Mutiny, is to disentangle the facts from opinions and to extricate the information from the mass of criticism and controversies. The Author aimed at simply presenting, as faithfully and as concisely as possible, the mechinary of the Anglo-Indian Government as existed immediately before and after the Mutiny. The revenue map along with a table included in the volume is intended to offer data for a fair comparison of the various systems under which the Land Revenue of India was then collected. The facts and documents contained in this work are still very valuable source material to the students of British India and Indian politics., About the author:- , Content:- Chapters I. Introduction Sketch of the Political History of British India II. Existing Government of British India III. The Instruments of Indian Government IV. Administration of Justice in British India V. Existing Revenue System of British India VI. Administration of Native States VII. Existing Government Institutions and Public Works in British India VIII. The Mind of Ramana Maharshi
Jaico Publishing House; Delhi, India; 8172242115; Softcover; New;
Sri Ramana Maharshi (1879-1950) was still in his teens when he attained enlightenment through a remarkable experience, as if undergoing death of the physical body, while remaining in full consciousness. He left home for the sacred hill of Arunachala where he taught the purest form of Advaita Vedanta (non-duality) through the simple discipline of self-inquiry. His teaching, his principal instruction to all his devotees was always to meditate on the question Who am I?In this book Arthur Osborne gives an account of the life and teachings of Sri Ramana Maharshi. It has a special relevance to our age with its outlines of a religion based on the Indian scriptures which is essentially spiritual, without ceasing to be rational and ethical.Printed Pages: 276. 105371

Greater India
Munshiram Manoharlal Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 1981; 8121502209; First Edition; Cloth; New; New; 15 Cms x 22.5 Cms
The concept of a world-community where a nation's interest is to be subordinated to the general welfare of the mankind has, of late, been driven home by the UNO. It may be puzzling novelty to pronounce that this gospel of the UNO has been a time-honoured facet of India's foreign policy in the distant past. Thus while the west stood for "my country, right or wrong." India forged ahead to harness permanent benefits for the universe. No wonder, the umbrella of Indian cultural influence got inside it far-flung lands and islands both in the east and the west that came to be rightly named "Greater India." India has been the king-pin in this cultural knot. A large number of standard books in French and Dutch languages held the field to begin with. Works in English came rather late. There has always been the need for a quick survey of the entire subject in a brief compass and within an easy reach. The present study is rather a gamut that couches the entire field and material in a systematic, easy and balanced historical narration to cater to the needs of the students and the general readers alike. The Foreigner
Orient Paperbacks; New Delhi, India; 8122201466; Softcover; New;
A Foreigner is the story of a young man who is detached, almost estranged, a man who sees himself as a stranger, an alien wherever he goes or lives- in Kenya where he was born, in UK and USA where he was a student and in India where he finally settles down. His detachment transcends barriers of geography, nationality and culture. It propels him from one predicament to another, sucking in the wake several people, including June; an attractive American with whom he had a short lived but passionate affair.The transitoriness associated with the word 'foreigner' permeates the novel and is handled with remarkable maturity reminding the reader of epoch-making The Outsider by Albert Camus. The protagonist's anguish at the meaninglessness of the human condition and the eventual release from the anxieties of life through karmayoga, the principle of action without attachment, add to the aesthetics of the work.Printed Pages: 192. 106643

The Last Labyrinth
Orient Paperbacks; New Delhi, India; 8122205062; Softcover; New;
The Last Labyrinth is a splendid novel — serious, disturbing, lyrical and irresistibly readable, a fascinating exploration into the turbulent inner world of a successful urban India.Som Bhaskar is a millionaire-industrialist, married to a woman of his choice who has borne him two children, yet relentlessly driven by undefined hunger which he unsuccessfully seeks to satisfy by possession — of an object, a business enterprise, a woman. Much like Saul Bellow's Henderson he is always crying, 'I want, I want, I want.' His search taken him from Bombay to Benares, at once holy and repellent — with its narrow, dirty lanes, dancing girls and a mystical aura.Amidst this contrasting juxtaposition of locales, the novel explores the meaning of life and death, illusion and reality, desire and resignation.Here is an eternally contemporary theme with all its complexities; the story's spiritual and sensuous dimensions are interwoven with great finesse making this novel a rare, unforgettable treat.Printed Pages: 208. 106644

It was dubbed as an election nobody wanted. Yet more people came out to vote than they ever did in amid-term poll. And in voting the fourth hung house in as many elections, they again altered the complexion of the Indian polity as more then half the seats changed hands. If 1996 was a turning-point signaling the end of singly party dominance, 1998 truly launched India on a coalition course. This book tells it all relating the unfolding Events from the day Kesri pulled the plug on Gujral pushing India into another election. Besides an overview of the outcome, it brings home the Battle in various states and Regions as the election carnival got rolling in the world's largest democracy. The issues that exercised the voters mind and the strategies and the stratagems adopted by the contenders to win them over too are touched upon. Best of PTI pictures bring alive the election scene, while Graphics and Computer analysis on the fluctuating Political fortunes complete the story. Looking beyond Cold statistics, it answers all the questions one-voter, politician or pollster-want to ask about the fractured verdict of 1998.Printed Pages: 208. 105874

Elections in India: Nehru to Vajpayee
Gyan Books Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2001; 8121207681; Hardcover; New; New;
From Nehru to Vajpayee, it has been a roller-coaster ride for the world's largest democracy. A charismatic leader and a stable Phase in the heady years after freedom. A great split in the country's oldest Political party. A strong willed Woman leader who turned autocratic. A "Second Azadi" that did not last. The return of the political 'Dynasty' and its great fall. A mindless assassination bringing an era to an end.From a virtual single party Monopoly to an age of hung houses and uneasy coalitions and their inevitable coming apart. From a strong central Authority to a truly federal policy, the Indian Union has seen it all.Taking a long Look back at the elections in India since independence, this book traces the ups and downs witnessed by the Indian polity under a dozen Prime Ministers in the fifty years of independence. With Graphics and charts on the fluctuating fortunes of the major contenders in each state, it focuses on the last poll of the Millennium that appeared to put years of uncertainty behind. Relating the story of how the voter put India, hopefully, back on the road to stability, it also provides a flavour of the campaign, contenders and the issues that exercised the voters' mind in an election that the Country could do without. A complete Computer analysis of the shifting voting patterns, makes the Account complete.Printed Pages: 328. 106002

Wah Dhoni!
Times Group Books; New Delhi, India; 2011; 9789380828527; First Edition; Softcover; New;
When Dhoni made his debut in ODI in Chittagong (Bangladesh), he was run out without opening his account. At the next ODI, he was caught while playing a pull shot. In the three-match series, he scored only 19 runs. But those who reposed trust in him knew that once he got going he would outshine all his colleagues. This was proved during the match against Pakistan at Vishakhapatnam in 2005. He made Pakistani bowlers look like club rookies and announced his arrival with 148 off 123 balls. It was Mahi all over.The book attempts a peek into Mahendra Singh Dhoni's persona that makes him an outstanding cricketer and a captain. Coming from Ranchi, a town not associated with cricket, to make it big at the international level was not an easy task. With quiet determination, he overcame one hurdle after another and achieved the captaincy of Team India in all three formats of the game. The book keeps the statistical details to a bare minimum and tries to present to Dhoni's fans several hitherto unknown or unpublicized facts related to his younger and struggling days, his temperament, his family, his beliefs and the changes he has brought to the dressing room atmosphere…. His story proves the axiom that champions do not depend on ideal conditions to reach to the top, they rather adapt themselves and overcome the conditions made available to them…. Indeed! this is the story of a local boy, who quietly dreamt big and went on to realize his dream…so that he has earned a permanent place in the history of Indian cricket, that too within such a short span.Printed Pages: 180. 104951

The ancient Chinese art of feng shui is increasingly being adopted by many in their quest for personal peace and prosperity. Literally meaning `wind' and `water', it is a system of laws governing spatial arrangement and orientation in relation to the flow of positive and negative energies (chi). Although an elaborate art, it is not difficult to grasp when presented systematically. 80 Ways to Prosperity with Feng Shui sets out the principles and rules of feng shui, step-by-step, with practical applications and relevant examples focussed on the current time cycle (Period 8) which began in February 2004. The Inheritors
Penguin; New Delhi, India; 2004; 014303216X; First Edition; Paperback; New; New; 234 x 153 Mm
From the ritual-bound household of an orthodox scholar in a small village in Bengal in 1897 to Germany and Mumbai at the turn of the new millennium, The Inheritors follows the shifting life patterns of a family through a melange of narratives, memories and characters. The unrelenting puritanism of Nyayaratna Bishnupada Deb Sharma drives his daughter Radharani to insanity and throws into sharp relief his grandson Shibkali's feeble attempt to break free. Giribala voices her resentment against her circumstances through a lifetime of silence, her destiny finding an echo in her daughter Alo, tragic victim of her husband's sexual perversions. And Pramatha's depraved radicalism is set against Shashishekhar's progressive outlook which symbolizes the most significant departure from the stifling constraints of his community. Even as it inherits the deadwood of the past, each generation strives to liberate itself, setting the stage for the eternal conflict between tradition and change, between a legacy and its inheritors. Aruna Chakravarti draws upon history and myth, religion and folklore, rituals and culinary practices to create a vivid portrait of a community of Vaidic Kulin Brahmins. The narrative, oscillating back and forth in time, weaves a vibrant tapestry of life—differing ideologies and sensibilities, suicides and desertions, marriages and infidelities, bigotry and liberalism—set in the larger context of a nation's inexorable march towards independence and a society caught on the cusp of conservatism and modernity. Mango Cheeks, Metal Teeth
Westland Limited; New Delhi, India; 9789383260546; Softcover; New;
A playful coming-of-age story that gently explores the themes of growing up, loss of innocence and the intimate yet aloof nature of upstairs-downstairs relationships. It is a different time. Sridevi rules the box office and Kapil Dev is yet to retire. Geetha, elevenish, is off for the annual family vacation in Kerala and is looking forward to all the fun with her cousins , visits to the beach and trips to the market to buy glass bangles and kites and shuttlecocks, evenings in the veranda listening to her grandfather’s ridiculous ghost stories which he swears are all true, marathon card games and ferocious boys-versus-girls battles with the bristles of brooms made from coconut fibreBut as the summer unfolds, Geetha finds herself spending more time instead at the back of the house with the free-spirited cook, the hypochondriac cleaner, the virile gardener, a cheeky helper girl and Babu, son of Koovait Kannan, the bumbling plumber who made good. Babu’s family is immersed in the wedding preparations for Babu’s sister, who is marrying the most eligible bachelor in the neighbourhood Constable Venu, an expert thrasher of suspects and son of that wealthy black-marketer of supplies, Ration Raaman. But Babu’s mind is otherwise occupied. With thoughts of a face as rounded as a Malgova mango of an oiled plait as thick as the ropes used to tie the fishing boats, of eyes that sparkle like the sea on a sunlit morn. As Geetha and Babu’s closely linked but widely divergent lives intersect, both are about to lose some of the blissful ignorance and innocence of childhood. Charmingly quirky and often laugh-out-loud hilarious, Mango Cheeks, Metal Teeth is a playful coming-of-age story that gently explores the themes of growing up, loss of innocence and the intimate yet aloof nature of upstairs-downstairs relationships. 109625

Women Empowerment in India: Processes and Inter-Linkages
Om Publications; New Delhi, India; 2010; 8190676660; Hardcover; New; New;
The Book is the outcome of an intensive research undertaken in three villages of Bhojpur Block of sub division ModiNagar of district Ghaziabad in western Uttar Pradesh under the 'Research Award Scheme of University Grants Commission to understand the complex and inextricably woven interactions and inter-linkages between the essential proxies or elements of women empowerment and the prevailing formal and informal social and cultural institutions. This microscopic study projecting panoramic view of the status of women in India aimed at testing the hypothesis that "Focusing only on the elements like improving females3 education and skills and Health care; providing employment for cash income as well as credit to individual woman or group of women; allowing them in political process of decision making and participation etc; will not result in visible improvement in the status unless challenges are also posed to discriminatory institutions". The book extensively reviews literature on the status of women in pre independent India as well as the major studies on the concept of 'Empowerment' in general and 'Empowering Women; in particular and the development efforts made by .the government since independence for emancipation of women in various fields and how far these efforts have been successful in main streaming of women and practicing the gender justice in the society. A 'women empowerment index' is constructed to assess the women's situation over a period of time as well as across the regions. An analytical framework for examining the gender inequalities generated by key institutions through which development takes place occupies a central place in the book. This study identified the strategic or critical areas requiring attention for the women's empowerment and essentially focuses on the institutionalization of the process of women empowerment at various levels. The findings of the study will be useful for the planners, policy makers or those involved in implementation and practicing of the women empowerment at the grass root level across the country.Printed Pages: 384. 103187

The Buddhist Art of Kausambi
D.K. Printworld (P) Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2003; 8124602263; First Edition; Hard Cover; New; New; 23 Cms x 29 Cms
One of the major centres of Buddhist art in ancient times, Kausambi provides evidence of an uninterrupted art tradition spanning centuries. Pointing to the scant attention Kausambi has received from scholars in the past, this work attempts to highlight its art treasures through a study of its stone sculptures. Based on scrutiny of stone sculptures found at various sites in Kausambi and its vicinity and housed in different museums, it presents perhaps the first extensive documentation of the Buddhist art of the region from the Mauryan to post-Gupta period. It examines in detail over 300 stone sculptures, paying special attention to their iconographic features, types of stone, techniques of carving, grinding and polishing and their aesthetic appeal. All this comes with a background throwing light on the history of Kausambi and its association with Buddhism, the early archaeological explorations in the region, and the individuality and uniqueness of Kausambi art as compared to Mathura and Sarnath schools. The book presents over 225 black-and-white and over 50 coloured photographs of Buddhist sculptures which are neatly classified and systematically analysed. It would prove invaluable to scholars and students of Buddhist art. Printed Pages: 364 with 2 maps, 322 b/w photos and 54 coloured illustrations. 010688

Eating God: A Book of Bhakti Poetry
Penguin Books India Pvt. Ltd.; Delhi, India; 2014; 0670087599; Softcover; New;
The seeker’s impassioned yearning for the Divine, unmediated—here and now— is the essence of bhakti. As old as time, its spirit suffused the outpourings of mystic poets across India from the eighth century onward. Their compositions—passionate, sensuous, intimate, often articulated in regional languages and dialects—spoke to cobbler and priest alike, and have embedded themselves in our collective unconscious. The two-hundred-odd poems in this volume remind us of this rich palette of human longing: from the trenchant irony of Kabir and audacious sensuality of Annamayya and Chandidas to the earthy mysticism of Tukaram and fierce lyricism of Mira and Akka Mahadevi. We travel the emotional arc of bhakti, from wild longing to liberation, through these utterances and many more. Featuring classic translations by A.K. Ramanujan and Dilip Chitre, among others, as well as new and unpublished ones by acclaimed poets, Eating God is a fabulous treat for seekers and poetry lovers alike.Printed Pages: 256. 103423

The Algebra of Infinite Justice
Penguin; New Delhi, India; 2002; 014302907X; Revised Edition; Paperback; New; New; 14 Cms x 22 Cms
few weeks after India detonated a thermonuclear device in 1998, Arundhati Roy wrote ‘The End of Imagination’. The essay attracted worldwide attention as the voice of a brilliant Indian writer speaking out with clarity and conscience against nuclear weapons. Over the next three and a half years, she wrote a series of political essays on a diverse range of momentous subjects: from the illusory benefits of big dams, to the downside of corporate globalization and the US Government’s war against terror. First published in 2001, The Algebra of Infinite Justice brings together all of Arundhati Roy’s political writings so far. This revised paperback edition includes two new essays, written in early 2002: ‘Democracy: Who’s She When She’s at Home’, that examines the horrific communal violence in Gujarat, and ‘War Talk: Summer Games with Nuclear Bombs’, about the threat of nuclear war in the Subcontinent. ‘Each essay is an elaborately argued thesis..simultaneously both profound and poetic.’ Newstime ‘(Arundhati Roy’s) essays glitter with sentences that remain etched in the mind-Roy's politics remains clear-voiced and fearless, large in scope, consistent in its concern for the exploited, scathing in its criticism of the state and its institutions’ he Telegraph Printed Pages: 384. 023057
