25709 Reba Som
Gandhi, Bose, Nehru and the Making of the Modern Indian Mind
Penguin; New Delhi, India; 2004; 0670058009; First Edition; Hard Cover; New; New; 15 Cms x 23 Cms
This intellectual history of twentieth-century Indian nationalist thought examines the relationship between three key figures of modern Indian history and the influence their ideas had in the shaping of society and politics in independent India. As leaders of the anti-imperialist struggle, Gandhi, Bose and Nehru not only devised various strategies to overthrow colonial rule, but also grappled with vital issues—democracy, federalism, secularism, social justice, gender equality, modernity, national identity, and international relations—regarding the future of India. In this fresh and insightful analysis, Reba Som contrasts and juxtaposes the thoughts and responses of the three leaders to changing political and social conditions—from Gandhi's faith in local self-governance and village-centric institutions to Nehru's liberal values of secularism, equity and democracy and his belief in a planned economy to Bose's struggle to project India's concerns on the international stage. She draws chiefly on their own writings and speeches to show the evolution of their thinking in all its ambivalence, complexity and contradiction. In the process, she also offers a reassessment of Bose, often seen as a challenger to Gandhi, and emphasizes that Gandhi and Bose, despite fundamental ideological and political differences, shared much in common in temperament, foundational values and beliefs and styles of functioning than perhaps even they themselves acknowledged. In showing how the intellectual and political legacy of Gandhi, Bose and Nehru contributed to the making of the modern Indian mind, Reba Som's book becomes as much an examination of our present as it is an analysis of India's fight against colonial rule and the struggle to define the country's post-independence identity as a socialist secular democratic republic. Reconstructing Tradition: Advaita Acarya and Gaudiya Vaisnavism at the Cusp of the Twentieth Century
Columbia University Press; New York, USA; 2005; 0231129548; First Edition; Hard Cover; New; New; 16 Cms x 24 Cms
Advaita Acarya was one of the leading figures in the genesis of the Bengali Vaisnava movement in the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries. Though crucial to the movement's origins, Advaita's standing among subsequent generations of Bengali Vaisnavas began to fade, only to be reestablished once again during the nineteenth century. In her groundbreaking study, Rebecca Manring examines the ways in which Advaita's followers used his life story to define, preserve, and reconstruct a political and religious movement. Manring's illuminating and detailed readings of Middle Bengali and Sanskrit texts reveal the evolving hagiographical traditions concerning Advaita. Her work also presents new perspectives on theological issues within the Bengali Vaisnava tradition, the role of sacred biography, and the religious history of South Asia. Advaita rose to prominence as the older teacher and right-hand man to Caitanya, the founder of the Vaisnava movement. As a Brahman, Advaita also helped the movement gain acceptance among the religious establishment. However, his school and its promotion of conservative brahman values began to lose adherents in the next generation as other, less tradition-bound groups came to the fore. In the late nineteenth century his followers reasserted their place in Bengali Vaisnavism by demonstrating, through their hagiographies, that they alone represented Caitanya's, and hence Advaita's, original vision and that they alone had kept it untainted despite the potential for contamination from external forces. Manring analyzes how members of Advaita's school used established imagery and techniques to sustain their claim for the religious superiority of an individual and recreated themselves in light of the changing political and social contexts of nineteenth-century Bengal. Contents Introduction The Birth of an Image Advaita crya: A New Imminence Variant Messages: Non-Hagiographical Texts Treating Advaita Acarya Revival and Return Another "Black Forgery," or Mere Play? Historic Temples in Pakistan: A Call to Conscience
Niyogi Books; New Delhi, India; 9789383098491; Softcover; New;
Historic Temples in Pakistan: A Call to Conscience makes a case for keeping ancient emblems of faith alive and for pluralism in a land of irony that has been home to multiple ancient faiths yet stands besieged by unpalatable extremism. It also aspires to enshrine the ideal of liberty.By framing an all-inclusive piety, this book sets out to ignite a discourse and the collective conscience of a nation numbed into silence, fear or the false conviction of the supremacy of a singular religion—to institutionalise the fundamental right of will.Elaborately embellished with evocative photographs of antiquated and exquisite Hindu shrines, opulent rituals and festivals and regional populace, the chronicle has extensive research and exceptional pilgrimage sites—Hinglaj, Katas Raj, Kalka Cave Temple, Panchmukhi Hanuman Mandir and Shivala Mandir, to name a few.While vivid introductions and sweeping images present the landscape and the social fabric of a territory, the redolence of celebrations spread passion and fervour. A special article introduces the extraordinary Fakira, last of the human hands behind idols in Pakistan.Humanity is cast as the oldest of creeds and as the reason for faiths. Therefore, devotion cannot be reserved for a sole Call to Prayer.Printed Pages: 296 with 429 colour & 3 b/w photographs. 106596

Ajmer Sharif: Awakening of Sufism in South Asia
Niyogi Books; New Delhi, India; 2017; 9789385285646; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New;
Ajmer Sharif, the heart of homage for thousands of all faiths, welcomes a tidal wave of humanity for the saint known as Gharib Nawaz (Benefactor of the Poor), whose spiritual order is the most lyrical and inclusive. This book showcases the absolute necessity of Khwaja Muinuddin Chishti in our conflicted times. Today, he is a signpost of unity; a reminder of the relevance of Sufism as a conduit of harmony and justice. These pages narrate the story of the founder of the Chishti Sufi Order in South Asia-who knew that hunger supersedes doctrines-and of his movement, which began in a mud hut over eight centuries ago. Muinuddin Chishti brought qawwali, the genre of Sufi devotional recitals, and the ideal of acceptance to the world. He discouraged religious supremacy and patriarchy by example-his wife was a central leader and his only daughter became a caliph-an aspect practised at his seat, but cast off by other shrines of his lineage. An elaborately researched oeuvre on the history, spiritual journey, mystical power and legacy of the 12th century Sufi giant-rich with accounts of Mughal devotees, monuments, rituals and over 200 unique, evocative photographs-Ajmer Sharif traces the life of the saint and reveals the living force of his shrine. Practicing Greatness: 7 Disciplines of Extraordinary Spiritual Leaders
Times Group Books; New Delhi, India; 2010; 8126525029; First Edition; Softcover; New;
Spiritual leaders--clergy, lay, seminary, higher education--typically do not aspire to greatness, for fear of seeming to lack humility or seeming to presume to know God's plan for their lives. Yet greatness is just what churches, seminaries, and institutions of higher education need, just as much if not more so than secular corporations and organizations. Leaders need to know the ingredients of greatness, the 7 central disciplines they must cultivate if they are to move from good enough to truly great.Printed Pages: 192. 104785

The Awakening Body: Somatic Meditation for Discovering Our Deepest Life
Shambhala Publication/TBI; New Delhi, India; 1611803713; Softcover; New;
Joy and freedom are the essence of who we are—yet our conceptual filters keep us from connecting to this wonderful inherent truth about ourselves. But the solution to the problem is literally right at our fingertips (and feet, head, and ears): the body. When we learn to see through the mind-body dichotomy we also see through the unreality of the painful knots we tend to tie ourselves in.Reggie Ray presents here six fundamental practices that enable us to use the body itself as a supremely powerful tool for connecting us to the joyful reality of who we really are. These practices allow us to bypass the mental fabrications that keep us from experiencing our world and lead us directly to the richness of living a fully present, embodied human life. Secret of the Vajra World: The Tantric Buddhism of Tibet (The World of Tibetan Buddhism: Volume Two)
Shambhala; Boston, USA; 2002; 157062917X; First Edition; Paperback; New; 15.5 Cms x 23 Cms
This book provides an entrée into the Tantric (or Vajrayana) Buddhism of Tibet, as conveyed by Tibetan masters teaching in the West, and as received by their Western students. The Tantric tradition is a unique collection of lesser-known texts, concepts, and meditation practices that are usually made available only to experienced and specially initiated practitioners. The "Vajra World" (vajradhatu in Sanskrit) is a realm of indestructibility, the level of reality beyond all thought and imagination, all impermanence and change, which a fully realized person knows and inhabits. Used metaphorically, "Vajra World" refers to the traditional culture of Tibet and the unique spirituality that is its secret strength. Topics include: The tantric view of human nature and the external world The special role of the guru, or tantric mentor The preliminary practices that prepare the student for full initiation The major dimensions of Vajrayana practice, including visualizations, liturgies, and inner yogas The tradition of the tulku, or incarnate lama The lore surrounding the death of ordinary people and of saints The practice of solitary retreat, the epitome of traditional Tibetan Buddhism Secret of the Vajra World is the companion volume to the author's earlier book, Indestructible Truth: The Living Spirituality of Tibetan Buddhism. While that book focuses on the history, cosmology, philosophy, and practice of the more public, exoteric side of Tibetan Buddhism, this work treats its more hidden and esoteric aspects as they take shape in Vajrayana. Together, the two volumes provide a broad introduction to the major traditions of Tibetan Buddhism. Printed Pages: 540. 022675

Buddhist Art in South-east Asia: The Indian Influence on the Art of Thailand
Aryan Books International; New Delhi, India; 2004; 8173052603; Reprint; Hard Cover; New; New; 22 Cms x 28 Cms
The aim of this volume is to present a connected history of different forms of Buddhist art which flourished in South-East Asia, especially Thailand, from the early years of Christian era up to the end of the sixteenth century. The book thus furnishes for the first time, a connected and comprehensive account of the art of Thailand (or Siam, as previously known) and also intimately connected arts of India, Burma, Cambodia, Indonesia and other neighbouring countries. In spite of the obscure history of Thailand and the dependence of its art on the other countries for inspiration, Dr. Le May has succeeded in putting together a reasoned and convincing account of over a period of 1500 years. As the origin of all the forms of Buddhist art found in South-East Asia are to be sought in India, it is essential to obtain a thorough knowledge of Indian Buddhist art as groundwork, which always had the remarkable capacity to adapt itself to the needs of every country, race and religion. Also, as the art of each and every one of these countries in South-East Asia is complimentary to the rest and a knowledge of each, such as this book provides, is indispensable to our understanding of the whole. The book also contains over 200 photographs selected to illustrate the different phases through which various art forms in Thailand have passed and also examples from India, Sri Lanka, Burma, Cambodia and Indonesia for comparison. It, thus not only interprets thoughts, theories, meanings and views on the origin, history, diffusion, structure and inter-relation, but also provides a guiding thread among the various styles and periods while giving an adequate and correct idea of the various schools and works of Buddhist art. Kathak- the style that grew, took shape and flourished in the northern regions of the subcontinent-has been misunderstood and misinterpreted on account of ignorance and prejudice from various quarters. This book sets out, therefore, to rectify incorrect perceptions by presenting historical facts and placing Kathak dance in its proper cultural context. 107908

Sung in a Sensual Style
KW Publishers; New Delhi, India; 2014; 9789383649266; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New;
Hindustani light classical music primarily encompasses Thumri, Dadra, Kajri, Jhoola, Hori, Chaiti, Sawan and Ghazal. Once associated only with courtesan–singers, this genre of music has a mystical dimension, enabling the absorption of Sufi poetry.Contemporary ideas seep into traditional genres, like leaves from trees on a river-bank fall and float on the river to become with it. This document chronicles such changes within the genre and illuminates all its facets, taking the reader through its history, philosophy and practical aspects.“Rekha Surya’s writing is like her singing—captivating and intense yet touchingly simple. She writes about her musical genre with familiarity, ease and authority in a lucid, succinct style. This book serves to help the reader understand the genre’s intrinsic connection to Sufi poetry and is a pleasure to read for all lovers of Indian classical and semi-classical music.Printed Pages: 102. 104256

Early Meitei History: Religion, Society and The Manipur Puyas
Akansha Publishing House; New Delhi, India; 2009; 8183701639; Hardcover; New; New;
Early Meitei History : Religion, Society and the Manipur Puyas is a concerted attempt towards presenting an objective reconstruction of the Religion and society in early Meitei history. Studies undertaken so far have been inadequate in terms of handling the mass of manuscripts called Puyas which are the only major written source for the study. Notwithstanding the existence of reliable historical Material alongside mythical narrative, the problem has been the treatment of the Puyas by majority of the scholars as authentic historical records per se. This Book offers a fresh approach to the treatment of the subject. It integrates critical Study of the Puyas, experiences of the living Tradition archaeological evidence and secondary data sources to comprehend the subject from a wider perspective. The study focuses on ancestor worship; a critical study of which is crucial for understanding other aspects of Manipur history. The traditional religion passed through a long process of evolution and survived even after Vaisnavism was declared the State religion of Manipur in the eighteenth century A.D. The book will serve its purpose if it contributes towards a meaningful interpretation of the history of the Meiteis. The work is also aimed at stimulating discourses on issues such as identity, Ethnicity and nationality affecting contemporary Manipur society. This study will provide a more perceptive understanding of the past, which is essential in order to understand the present and subsequent periods of Meitei history. The Civilizations of the East: India
Munshiram Manoharlal Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 1969; 8121503620; Reprint; Cloth; New; New; 16.5 Cms x 25 Cms
Rene Grousset's The Civilizations of the East: India is regarded to be the most valuable introduction to the history of civilization and art of India. The area of study, in the present volume, has been divided into three main chapters, Buddhist and Brahman India, Farther India, and the Malay Archipelago and Muslim India, thus covering a diverse area over an immense time. In the first chapter, beginning with the Indus Valley Civilization, followed by a brief background of the Aryans, Grousset turns his attention to Buddhist art and discusses its genesis and efflorescence. In dealing with the Gandhara or the Greco-Buddhist school of art, Grousset out of its exceptional importance in the general history of art calls it to be the easternmost school of Greco-Roman art of Asia, working in the cause of Buddhism. Particularly illuminating in the book are the portions dealing with the stucco figures from Hadda, near Jalalabad, datable between the third and the fifth centuries. The next important chapter in the history of Indian art is the Gupta school which, in Grousset's view, marks the birth of a new aesthetic ideal of India. Grousset thus succeeds in presenting the evolving themes of Indian art through successive periods while also discussing the Indian art traditions in sculptures, paintings, bronzes, etc. In the chapter on extra-Indian influences, Grousset discusses and describes the homogeneity in art forms during the sixth and twelfth centuries in the areas which are considered to be forming part of the 'Greater India', and covers the entire range of art in Java, Cambodia, Siam and western and southern Indo-China. In this context the important schools of art viz., Khmer art, Cham art and the Siamese art are also analyzed. In the final chapter, on Muslim India, after sketching briefly the Indo-Muslim architecture, Grousset proceeds on to describe in detail the Mogul and the Rajput painting and shows how the letter was stimulated and influenced by the former. In this episodic work, Grousset has succeeded in conveying the spirit of Indian art in its various ramifications. The text, with 249 illustrations include some of the finest examples of Indian art in the European collections, is marked by an intimacy of style and lucidity of expression. Constraints in Phonological Acquisition
Cambridge University Press; Cambridge, UK; 2004; 0521829631; First Edition; Hard Cover; New; New; 228 x 152 Mm
This outstanding volume presents a state-of-the-art overview of linguistic research into the acquisition of phonology. Bringing together well-known researchers in the field, it focuses on constraints in phonological acquisition (as opposed to rules), and offers concrete examples of the formalization of phonological development in terms of constraint ranking. The first two chapters situate the research in its broader context, with an introduction by the editors providing a brief general tutorial on Optimality Theory. Chapter two serves to highlight the history of constraints in studies of phonological development, which predates their current ascent to prominence in phonological theory. The remaining chapters address a number of partially overlapping themes: the study of child production data in terms of constraints, learnability issues, perceptual development and its relation to the development of production, and second language acquisition. • Overview of state-of-the-art research in phonological acquisition • Contributions by well-known researchers (Hayes, Jusczyk, Menn, Prince, Smolensky, Tesar) • Introduction offers a bird’s eye view of research leading up to current situation Contents List of contributors; Preface; 1. Disability and Society: A Reader
Orient BlackSwan; New Delhi, India; 2009; 8125036865; First Edition; Paperback; New; 14 x 22 Cm
In the 1980’s disabled scholars in the West began to develop a radical critique of biomedical conceptions of disability that focused exclusively on the individual body and its limitations. They also exposed the failure of the social sciences to critically address what this medical understanding of disability meant, and what it excluded from consideration. Out of their work emerged what is generally called the ‘social model’ of disability. Over the past twenty years this perspective has generated a substantial literature, much of it making use of the methods of qualitative social research. Narratives and life histories produced by disabled people themselves have a central place in the Disability Studies literature. This work has major implications for professionals in the rehabilitation field, for the social sciences, and the ultimate goal, for the full integration of disabled people into society. However almost all of if focuses on the traditions, practices and dilemmas of northern countries. In India, in Thailand and in most of Asia, the field of disability continues to be dominated by the biomedical model. Thus, ‘disability’ is understood as an incurable chronic illness and, increasingly, an object for medical diagnosis and investigation. Despite many positive developments, little convergence between disability politics and practice on the one hand, and sociology and anthropology on the other has taken place. Surveying the international literature on disability and rehabilitation, it becomes apparent that many studies carried out in Asian countries are designed to measure the extent of (unmet) need or the impact of services or attitudes to disabled people. Virtually no studies make use of the innovative, usually qualitative and often holistic approaches developed in Western countries over the past twenty years. This book introduces readers in Asian countries to the recent disability literature of the West. The editors hope that it will inspire new thinking among social scientist, rehabilitation professionals and organizations of disabled people themselves that could further the empowerment of people with disabilities. Empathy: Theory and Application in Psychotherapy
D.K. Printworld (P) Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2014; 812460729X; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New; 23 x 29 Cm
Empathy is a term much used in popular culture and professional circles. Yet it remains one of the most misunderstood tropes. Most people confuse or conflate empathy with sympathy; though related, these involve somewhat radically different affective or psychological registers. Empathy is founded on the art of understanding a living being's particular mental state or inner condition, in respect of his/her predicament, pain, suffering, anguish, fear, grief, sorrow, frustration, and anger in certain trying circumstances. There can even be comportment with another's joy and exhilaration. Its proper use makes possible a much deeper understanding of human communication, relation, intentionality, and action. As such its cognate in the Eastern or contemplative practice of compassion (karuna, metta, kripa) toward another, and also to sorge or “care” in phenomenological hermeneutics. Thus, there are cognitive, affective and ethical components in the practice of empathy. The importance of empathy whether in everyday life or as a clinical tool in therapeutic and palliative settings cannot be more emphasized. The book demonstrates the way in which using empathy as a means of diagnosis leads to different, more successful results and course of action. In so doing, the study challenges the erstwhile neglect and misconception of the role of empathy in transference and introspective processes availed in psychoanalysis. The book introduces novices in the field to the rich literature of psychoanalysis and philosophy, combining conceptual phenomenology with empirical data collected in a clinical setting. Testing the theory against clinical cases, as the book engages with, lends itself to a more solid conceptualization that can be poignantly articulated and studied further. The book will benefit students and practitioners in counselling, social work, psychiatry, psychoanalysis, psychotherapy and philosophy.Printed Pages: 135. 100321
