Buddhist Heritage in India and Sri Lanka: Rediscovery and Restoration
Kaveri Book Service; Delhi, India; 8174792031; Hardcover; New; New;
Though large numbers of tourists and pilgrims visit the Buddhist sites in India and the ancient cities in Sri Lanka today, few are aware that, before the arrival of the British, the locations of the Indian sites were mostly unknown. The Sri Lankan historical cities had been abandoned and overrun by jungle. The story of how, firstly, amateur British Orientalists and then the colonial authorities rediscovered and restored these sites is a remarkable one and is the subject of this book.The first part considers the legacy of the British for Buddhism in India. It describes the achievements of the Archaeological Survey of India during the directorships of Sir Alexander Cunningham and Sir John Marshall. It then considers the rediscovery and restoration of the important Buddhist sites. The third part considers the British legacy in Sri Lanka. It describes how after an initial difficult period, Buddhism revived. It details the restoration of the ancient sites, in particular the work of the Archaeological Survey of Ceylon under the leadership of H C P Bell. The next section discusses the British contributions to the study of Pali texts. 111745

Motilal Banarsidass Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2014; 8120800397; Eighth Reprint; Hardcover; New; New;
The Kautiliya Arthasastra is the oldest and most exhaustive treatise on the governance and administration of a state. Starting with the bringing up and education of the young prince, it proceeds to the appintment of ministers and the organisation and functioning of various state departments, including the setting up of a secret service. It then sets forth a code of civil and criminal law. In the matter of foreign relations, it puts before the ruler the ideal of a vijigisu (would-be world conqueror) and discusses in great detail the various situations he may have to face in his dealings with foreign states, whether friendly or inimical, and points out how he should conduct himself in every case so as to achieve his goal. The present edition comprises three parts. Part I is a new critical edition of the text based on all manuscript evidences available so far as well as on portions of ancient commentaries that have been published. It also takes into account the new commentary on the entire text by T. Ganapati Sastri. Part II is a new English translation of the text; the critical and explanatory notes consider the various readings in the text as well as the different interpretations found in the commentaries or offered by modern scholars. Part III is a study of the text and deals with all problems that are likely to arise in connection with its study, such as the origin of the Arthasastra as a science, the authorship and date of the work, social conditions reflected in it, the economy of the state visualised in it, the administrative setup recommended, law and its administration, foreign policy and so on. Environmental Ethics: A Dialogue of Cultures
Concept Publishing Company Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 1995; 8170225701; Hardcover; New; New;
This volume is the outcome of the National Symposium on Environmental Ethics organized by the SDF. It contains papers on the ethical values prevalent in different cultures and societies and the potentials of these values to ward off the emerging environmental crisis in the world. All ancient cultures and civilization are founded on creative human-nature relations with a built-in mechanism to correct minor ecological disturbances. Rapid industrialization, urbanization and population growth have given rise to the imbalances which cannot be corrected through self-correcting processes. Unless people seek meaning in life and living beyond the narrow ends of consumerism and exploitation of nature and fellow human beings, new technology will bring only new and more miseries. This dialogue calls for a more austere style of life laying emphasis on cultural enrichment and less on the amount of goods consumed. Such a life style requires a new system of ethics where in the concern for life in whatever form it exists in nature is the uppermost. Science and technology cannot be blamed for all the ills of the society. Much depends on how we use them. How we use them depends on our values system, which in turn determines the ethical code. Instead of trying to look for scapegoats in science and technology, we should introspect and change our values. Thus alone can a pollution and poverty free society be ensured and ill-effects of science and technology removed. Environmental ethics cannot be imposed by law. It has to be articulated, systematized, codified and followed by each and every individual. This needs comprehensive environment sensitive education policy in each and every country of the world. Philosophical Foundations of Hinduism. The Veda, the Upanishads and the Bhagavadgita: A Reinterpretation and Critical Appraisal
Munshiram Manoharlal Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2002; 8121509912; First Edition; Hard Cover; New; New; 14 Cms x 22 Cms
Philosophy and religion were never kept apart from each other in Indian philosophical tradition. The Vedas, the Upanisads and the Bhagavadgita provide a strong and unshakable philosophical foundation to Hinduism. In the present book, Dr. Misra has made a reinterpretation of the religious and philosophical thought of these sacred and immortal works. It has been found necessary in order to dispel the misinterpretation of Hinduism and meet the challenges that confront it today at the ideological and practical levels. The concepts of the Absolute, Brahman, of man and the world, the destiny of man and other fundamental issues have been discussed with great clarity, thoroughness and depth. The author has brought into clear focus the unique features of Hinduism and its intellectual depth and spiritual grandeur. A distinguishing feature of the present work is that the fundamental ideas of Hinduism have been compared with that of other religions, specially, Christianity and with the great idealistic tradition of the West. The author has also made a critical analysis and evaluation of some current ideas of contemporary Western thought. The present work provides ample evidence of the author's conceptual ability, originality and intellectual integrity. Printed Pages: 646. 000145

Times Group Books; New Delhi, India; 2012; 9789380828985; First Edition; Softcover; New;
The book charts a journey around the globe. While the first part covers the exciting destinations of India, the second part tries to cover a wider canvas. The coup de maitre reads like a backpacker's fantasy. From almost climbing the Mount Everest to encountering the indigenous people of Andaman and Nicobar Islands, from paying obeisance at various popular and lesser known temples and shrines in Himachal Pradesh and Garhwal to wandering in the deserts of Ladakh, the author endeavours to give a taste of everything Indian. His unquenchable thirst for adventure takes him further. Metaphorically thawing the ice sheet between the contemporary people and the Inunits in Greenland, the author gives you a world view of his experiences facing inhospitable weather in the icy Patagonia, getting lost in the romanticism of the Wadi Rum and Petra, and watching in awe the mighty lguassu Falls.Printed Pages: 294. 104526

On the Theory of Karma
Vitasta Publishing Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2009; 8189766384; Hardcover; New; New;
The theory of karma harps on the Newtonian principle that every action produces an equal and opposite reaction. Every time we think or do something, we create a cause, which in time will bear its corresponding effects. And this cyclical cause and effect generates the concepts of birth and reincarnation. 107260

Urban Decay in India (c. 300-c. 1000)
Munshiram Manoharlal Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 1987; 8121500451; First Edition; Hard Cover; New; New; 16.5 Cms x 25 Cms
The book focuses on the decline of the towns and their desertion in late ancient and early medieval India on the basis of archaeological evidence. The author has material remains to study crafts, commerce and coinage, and identifies and illustrates signs of growth and decay for more than 130 excavated sites. The strata with poor remains are taken to indicate decrease in construction, manufacturing and commercial activities, and are hence associated with de-urbanization. The reasons for the urban eclipse are sought not only in the fall of empires but also in social disorder and the loss of long-distance trade. The disintegration of the town life is seen not as social regression but as part of the social transformation which generated classical feudalism and promoted rural expansion. The book explores the link between urban decay and land grants to officials, priests, temples and monasteries. It shows how the landed elements collected surplus and services directly from the peasants, and remunerated artisan servicing castes through land grants and grain supply. The monograph should interest students of pre-modern urban history and those who study processes of change in economy and society in Gupta and post-Gupta times. It may also provide basic information on the urban horizons of excavated sites during the second half of the first millennium BC and the following six centuries AD. Printed Pages: 251 with 2 maps and 23 line drawings. 028985

Rethinking India's Past
Oxford University Press; New Delhi, India; 2009; 0195697871; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New; 15 x 23 Cm
Rethinking India’s Past presents a comprehensive and accessible account of the history of early India. Covering a long time span—from the Vedic period to twelfth century ad—it explores the linkages between social formations and modes of production. The essays challenge and critique several stereotypes about early India. The book looks at key aspects of early Indian history — political ideas and institutions; economic patterns and developments; and social orders and practices. It also examines the transition from ancient to medieval, underlining the accompanying socio-economic changes and characteristics of the early medieval period. The author provides an incisive account of ancient social formations underscoring themes like oriental despotism, position of sudras, feudalism, urban decay, and sati. Discussing various approaches to history writing in India, R.S. Sharma cautions against the uncritical use of models and theories. He surveys the various ideological frameworks of exploring the past including the colonialist, nationalist, and materialist schools. 026192
