The Philosophy of the Upanisads. A Study Based on the Evaluation of the Comments of Samkara, Ramanuja and Madhva
Munshiram Manoharlal Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2013; 8121510503; Reprint; Hardcover; New; New; 14 Cms x 22 Cms
The Upanisads which contain lofty philosophical teachings of the great seers constitute the most authoritative sourcebook for the Vedanta system of philosophy. However, there is no unanimity among the ancient exponents of Vedanta regarding the nature of the philosophy adumbrated in the Upanishads. Dr. Chari's scholarly work attempts to make a dispassionate study of the philosophical passages of the fourteen Principal Upanisads by giving due consideration to not only the comments of Samkara, Ramanuja and Madhva, but more importantly, the authoritative views of Badarayana as enshrined in his classic Vedantasutras. In the first part of the book, he presents the important passages of the Upanisads along with English rendering indicating the variations in the interpretation by the three commentators and also discusses their philosophical implications with reference to the Vedanta doctrines developed in the post-Upanisadic period. In the second part he has attempted to consolidate the variety of philosophical thoughts scattered all over the Upanisads into coherent doctrines under five broad subjects: Brahman, jivatman, jagat, sadhana, and parama-purusartha. In the final chapter he conclusively establishes on the basis of an objective evaluation of the views of the commentators that the Upanisads do not support the main tenets of Advaita such as the concept of Nirvisesa Brahman, the identity of jivatman and Brahman, the phenomenal character of the jagat and the doctrine of maya. The author maintains with sufficient textual support that the nature of the philosophy advocated by the Upanisads is Theistic Monism (savisesadvaita). This book, which is the first of its kind, presents an authentic and comprehensive exposition of the philosophy of the Upanisads. Printed Pages: 356. 014175

The Philosophy of Visistadvaita Vedanta: A Study Based on Vedanta Desika's Adhikarana-Saravali
Motilal Banarsidass Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2008; 8120831802; Hardcover; New; New;
The school of Vedanta designated as Visistadvaita was expounded by Sri Ramanuja in the classic Sri-Bhasya, which were developed by Sri Vedanta Desika in his two philosophical treatises titled Tattva-mukta-kalapa and Adhikarana-saravali. This scholarly work of Dr. S.M.S. Chari deals with the Adhikarana saravali. The variety of theories related to Vedanta which are discussed in the 156 Adhikaranas of the Vedanta-sutras are consolidated and presented in a sequential order under five major headings: the doctrine of Brahman, the doctrine of universe and Brahman, the doctrine of sadhana and the doctrine of Paramapurusartha. In the concluding chapter on General Evaluation, Dr. Chari discusses dispassionately the differing views of Samkara, Ramanuja and Madhva on the fundamental controversial theories of Vedanta. This volume along with the author's other books on Vedanta would be invaluable for a fuller understanding of Visistadvaita in all its aspects.Printed Pages: 435. 102152

26105 S.M. Srinivasa Chari with a Foreword By Mm. N.S. Ramanuja Tatacharya
The Philosophy of the Vedantasutra: A Study Based on the Evaluation of the Commentaries of Samkara, Ramanuja and Madhva
Munshiram Manoharlal Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2010; 8121508096; Reprint; Hardcover; New; New; 14 Cms x 22 Cms
The Vedantasutras of Badarayana which codifies the teachings of the Upanisads is acclaimed by all as the fundamental source-book for the system of Vedanta philosophy. Nevertheless several schools of thought such as the Advaita of Samkara, the Visistadvaita of Ramanuja and the Dvaita of Madhva have been developed from it, each one differing from the other in respect of major doctrines. This makes it difficult to determine the specific nature of the Vedanta philosophy as enunciated by Badarayana in his classic sutras apart from what is claimed by the respective commentators. Dr. Chari's scholarly work attempts to bring out the views of Badarayana on the philosophy of Vedanta as enshrined in the sutras. He discusses comprehensively and in a systematic manner with reference to the selected sutras, the five fundamental doctrines of Vedanta namely, the nature of Brahman, the nature of the individual soul and its relation to Brahman, the nature of the universe and its relation to Brahman, the nature of the means to attain Brahman and the nature of the Supreme Goal. On the basis of an objective evaluation of the comments of Samkara, Ramanuja, and Madhva, the three principal exponents of Vedanta, he has conclusively established that the Vedanta philosophy of Badarayana is theistic monism, upholding the oneness of the Ultimate Reality as organically related to the sentient souls and the non-sentient cosmic matter. The book which is the first of its kind seeks to provide a deeper insight into the Vedantasutras. Printed Pages: 227. 024592

The Philosophy of the Bhagavadgita: A Study Based on the Evaluation of the Commentaries of Samkara, Ramanuja and Madhva
Munshiram Manoharlal Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2014; 8121511011; Reprint; Hardcover; New; New; 15 x 23 Cm
This scholarly work presents a comprehensive and authentic exposition of the philosophy of the Bhagavadgita as enshrined in the original text by according due consideration to the commentaries of Samkara, Ramanuja and Madhva. In the first part of the book, Dr Chari makes an indepth study of the selected verses from each adhyaya and discusses their philosophical implications with particular reference to the Vedanta doctrines and connected issues advanced by the commentators while interpreting the crucial verses. This analytical and comparative study helps to understand how some of the basic tenets of Vedanta embedded in the Gita are explained differently by the commentators and also to assess the extent to which these are actually reflected in the original text. In the second part, the author has attempted to consolidate the various philosophical, theological and ethical ideas scattered all over the Gita and reconstruct them into coherent doctrines under three broad headings: Tattvas covering Paramatman, jivatman, and jagat, sadhana comprising karma-yoga, jnana-yoga and bhakti-yoga, and parama-purusartha. In the final chapter, Dr Chari examines dispassionately the views of the commentators on these theories and comes to the conclusion with sufficient textual authority that some of the tenets of Samskara and also Madhva do not fully conform to the teachings of the Gita. This book, which is the first of its kind, throws new light on the philosophy of the Gita. Printed Pages: 325. 013482

Universal History of Music: Compiled from Diverse Sources Together with Various Original Notes on Hindu Music
Chaukhamba Sanskrit Studies/Chaukhamba Amarabharati Prakshan; Varanasi, India; 2005; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New;
Music pervades all nature. It is co-eval with the creation. There is nothing in nature that arouses our attention or affects our feelings so quickly as a sound. The murmuring of water, the sighs of the zephyrs, the whispers of the evening breeze, the roar of the storms, the chirpings of the birds, the cries of the animals, the hum of distant multitudes, and the concussion of sonorous bodies, excite in our minds feeling of pleasure, pain, or fear, and contain in them the germs of music. A musical sound is a noise no doubt, by every noise is not a musical sound. There is marked difference between the two. Noise is a confused combination of sounds resulting from the concussion of non-elastic bodies; musical sound is a pure harmonious effect, produced from a simple elastic body, such as the tone of a bell. It flies further and is heard at a greater distance then a noise. The musical instruments played at a gathering may be heard at a distance of a mile, but the noise made by the people at the gathering, however overpowering it may be on the spot, is scarcely audible at a similar distance. Sound (Sanskrit, Nada) has been described as either inarticulate (Dhanyatmaka), or articulate (Varnatmaka). Instrumental music is considered inarticulate, and vocal music articulate by the curious structure of the vocal organs, man is capable of making a greater variety of tones than any other animal, and has at his disposal the power of giving expression to every emotion. The human voice, in its tone and accent is undoubtedly the purest and most sonorous of any which distinguishes the vocal animals. In those countries where man may be said, like a plant, to grow and flourish, the voice expands, and colder regions, where the mouth is more constantly kept closed, the voice is restricted and escapes with difficulty. Hence it is that the Afghan, Dutch and similar other languages are so guttural that in the delivery of some of their words, the speakers seem As If they are choked; and hence it is that in India, Greece, Italy and other Southern Countries, the climate of which is noted so much for its beauty and mildness, the vocal art has risen to so much fame.Printed Pages: 386. 100962

Indian Philosophical Systems: A Critical Review Based on Vedanta Desika's Paramata-bhanga
Munshiram Manoharlal Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2011; 8121511992; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New; 15 x 23 Cm
This scholarly work of Dr S.M.S. Chari's deals with the critical review of seventeen philosophical systems as presented in an important philosophical treatise of the thirteenth century titled Paramata-bhanga contributed by Vedanta Desika, an illustrious successor to Ramanuja, who is the chief exponent of Visistadvaita Vedanta. The main objective of Paramata-bhanga is to establish that Visistadvaita is a sound system of philosophy as compared to the several other Non-Vedic as well as Vedic schools and also Vedanta schools developed by Samkara, Yadavaprakasa, Bhaskara, and other exponents of the post-Ramanuja period. The original text written in Manipravala (a mixture of Tamil and Sanskrit) language contains, besides a brief account of the fundamental doctrines of Visistadvaita. The schools covered are Carvaka, Buddhism, Jainism, Sankhya, Yoga, Vaisesika, Nyaya, Purvamimamsa, Pasupata, Sabdabrahma-vivartavada, and Advaita Vedanta. Among the extant philosophical classics, Paramata-bhanga is a unique work. Realizing the importance of the Paramata-bhanga for the comparative study of Indian philosophy, late Dr Chari tried to give a lucid exposition of this treatise in English. This volume, which is the first of its kind, would be invaluable for students of Indian philosophy in general and Visistadvaita in particular. Printed Pages: 265. 036464

Yoga as Philosophy and Religion
Motilal Banarsidass Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2007; Hardcover; New; New;
Yoga is the steadiness of the mind, with the annihilation of the mental states, into a particular type of graduated state leading to Self-realization. The earliest exponent of this system called Rajayoga, the highest of all yogas as distinguished from Hathayoga and Mantrayoga was Patanjali who wrote Aphorisms on Yoga in 150 B.C. The present treatise relates to the system of Rajayoga as enunciated by Patanjali and explained by his commentators Vyasa, Vacaspati, Vijnanabhiksu and others. It deals with the foundation of the yoga practices their philosophical, psychological, cosmological, ethical and religious doctrines. It compares the essential features of the yoga system with other systems of philosophical thought and establishes, in particular, its affinity to the system of Samkhya. The work consists of fifteen chapters divided into two parts bound in one volume. Part I (Chapters I-VII) deals with Yoga Metaphysics, delineating mainly the characteristics and functions of Prakrti and Purusa, the reality of the external world and the process of Evolution. Part II (Chapters VIII-XV) expounds Yoga Ethics and Practice with emphasis on Yoga method stages of Samadhi and kindred topics. Impact of Defence Offsets on Military Industry Capability and Self-Reliance: The Road Ahead
KW Publishers; New Delhi, India; 2012; 9789381904084; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New;
India embarked upon the liberalisation path in1991 by dismantling the Licence, Quota, Permit Raj. A decade later, the defence sector allowed100 percent private sector participation with 26percent Foreign Direct Investment (FDI). The offset policy in 2005 and its subsequent refinements aimed at leveraging India’s big ticket acquisitions to bring in substantial FDI, Joint Ventures (JVs) and outsourcing arrangements, thereby improving the self-reliance quotient. Despite such policy initiatives, India’s military industry capability and self-reliance remain at a low ebb. There is considerable unease over the implementation of defence offsets, due to the meagre inflow of FDI into manufacturing and the R&D sector, lukewarm long term investment interest of foreign arms majors in Indian industry and outsourcing arrangements predominantly for low end products, services and Maintenance, Repair Overhaul (MRO) so far. To galvanise the process, the government needs to develop a comprehensive industrialization strategy for the manufacturing sector and dovetail defence industry capability as part of this larger policy mosaic. Use of offsets can be a critical facilitator of this strategy. Social Change and Public Administration in India
Gyan Books Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2016; 9789351281993; Hardcover; New; New;
Independent India opted for a parliamentary form of democracy for its governance. It was to be a polity based on the principles of democracy, socialism and secularism enshrined in the Preamble of the Constitution. It was a polity to further the norms of equality, freedom and fraternity. It claimed for the establishment of an egalitarian social order committed to social justice and brings about social change in the fractional social set up. Since the system has been in operation for the last six decades or so, it is pertinent to look into as to how far we have been able to achieve the desired goals. The present book makes an attempt to provide the readers the broad framework on the concerned issues. The book covers the theme through the articles contributed by eminent academies on the question of social change particularly with focus on Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes and the weaker sections of the society. It provides a critical appraisal of policy interventions as to how far they have been able to address the issue in question. It is hoped that this will gives the readers a realistic assessment of the prevailing scenario. Printed Pages: 365. 111017

Ramacharitmanasa: Eng. Trans. (Complete Works of Goswami Tulsidas, Vol. I)
Munshiram Manoharlal Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2008; 8121506352; Reprint; Hard Cover; New; New; 14 Cms x 22 Cms
Ramacharitmanasa is the magnum opus of Tulsidas. It has the distinction of being the only work in Hindi which is widely accepted as a Scripture. Translation of Ramacharitmanasa is difficult, because its simple verses contain, as it were between lines, theological expositions of the Rama symbol. The literal equivalent is sometimes unsuited to the theological intent. An attempt has been made in this translation to preserve the original without impairing the theological content. The serialization of dohas in the translation is according to Ramacharitmanasa published by Gita Press. Some parts of the original text not connected with the deeds of Rama have been abridged. Such dohas have not been serialized. It is hoped that this volume will stimulate in some measure devotion to Rama which Tulsi desired to convey. Printed Pages: 444. 031753

Minor Works: Baravai Ramayana, Janaki Mangal, Ramalala Nahachhu, Ramajna Prashna, Parvati Mangal, Krishna Gitavali, Hanuman Bahuka, Hanuman Chalisa, Sankata Mochana, and Vairagya Sandipini: Eng. Trans. ( Complete Works of Goswami Tulsidas, Vol. VI )
Munshiram Manoharlal Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 1998; 8121507057; Reprint; Hardbound; New; New; 14 Cms x 22 Cms
In ten short works contained in this volume, Tulsi composes verses on themes which evaluate his religious perspectives. Only three of these works are based on the deeds of Rama: In Baravai Ramayana, the rapture of devotion in the Name of Rama is brought out; in Ramalala Nahachhu Tulsi reiterates his faith in the Saguna form of Rama; in Ramajna Prashna, he ostensibly reads omens from the Deeds of Rama but concludes that all welfare depends on the devotion of Rama. Three of the works: Sankata Mochana, Hanuman Bahuka and Hanuman Chalisa are dedicated to Sri Hanuman. Tulsi's avowed principle was 'greater than Lord, the Lord's devotee take to be.' In the long poem Janaki Mangal Tulsi sings of the wedding ceremony of adi-shakti Sita to Rama. In Parvati Mangal, he departs from the story of Rama and sings on the wedding ceremony of adarsha-nari Parvati to Lord Shiva. In Vairagya Sandipini Tulsi observes that vairagya is not renunciation of the worldly duties but of Ego and bonds of 'I and mine.' Krishna Gitavali is a work totally unconnected with the story of Rama, the only common link between them being the supremacy of devotion and bhakti which is the reason for this work finding place in this anthology. Munshiram Manoharlal Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 1996; 8121506697; Reprint; Hardbound; New; New; 14 Cms x 22 Cms
Gitavali is of special significance to a devotee of Lord Rama. The Lord declared both in Ramacharitmanasa (VII.46) and in Srimad Bhagavadgita (IX.14) that by chanting His Glories one attains His Divine Bliss. Tulsi sings of the glory of the Saguna Form of Rama in highest ecstasy. He depicts the entire Creation: birds, beasts, Blossoms, trees, skies, clouds, fragrant breezes, day, night, Sun, Moon and stars paying obeisance to Rama, the Incarnated Lord of the Universe. Tulsi's love for Ayodhya is apparent in Gitavali. He sings of many events from the Deeds of Rama pertaining to Ayodhya. His songs of Holi, Diwali and jhoola (swing) festivals are unique. Dohavali: Eng.trans. An anthology of verses on Dharma and Morality (Complete Works of Goswami Tulsidas, Vol. IV)
Munshiram Manoharlal Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 1997; 812150709X; Reprint; Hardbound; New; New; 14 Cms x 22 Cms
Dohavali contains 573 Dohas (couplets) based on dharma and morality. Dharma is a corollary of religion and morality is a corollary of dharma. All religions enjoin moral codes of living for human beings. Tulsidas commences Dohavali by reiterating his faith in Saguna Rama, designating him to be the Divine Author of Morality. He describes illusions and emotions of earthly life. He compares the Glory of Love to the chaatak bird's legendary unswerving devotion to a few drops of autumn's rain to allay its thirst. In this background of religion and dharma, Tulsidas enumerates specific moral qualities relevant to social life, individual behaviours and collective moralities concerning responsibilities of the state towards its citizens and duties to the state. The work concludes with a short epilogue. Printed Pages: 167. 000390

Vinaya Patrika: A Letter of Plaint: Eng. Trans. (Complete Works of Goswami Tulsidas, vol. II)
Munshiram Manoharlal Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 1995; 8121506344; Reprint; Hardbound; New; New; 14 Cms x 22 Cms
In Vinaya Patrika Tulsi submits a mercy petition in the court of Rama. Ostensibly he is the plaintiff but evidently he represents humanity. His complaint is against Kaliyuga who has abetted with maya to cause turbulence on earth driving mankind inexorably in the net of delusion and inevitable life-death cycles. In such times discernment through knowledge, yoga, renunciation have receded and bounty of Rama's causeless mercy is the only recourse for redemption. Ramacharitmanasa is a scripture of the Rama, Symbol of Divinity, Vinaya Patrika is a scripture of devotion in the Rama tradition. It is an important work for evaluating Tulsi's religious viewpoint. His hymns analysing onslaught of 'adversaries of virtue'. helplessness of mankind in withstanding passions, fervent prayers in the vinaya mode of devotion, cannot fail to reveal the infallibility of divine love, of which Tulsi was one of the most ardent exponents. Vinaya Patrika has no thematic content but has many mythological references. Asterisks (*) against verses in the text indicates availability of more information on these references in Explanatory Notes contained in the volume. Printed Pages: 355. 000393

D.K. Printworld (P) Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2002; 8124602131; First Edition; Hard Cover; New; New; 19 Cms x 25 Cms
The book is a study of the fundamental principles of ancient Indian art and architecture, dealing with essentials of Hindu thinking and practice of art like the Hindu view of Godhead, iconography and iconometry, and symbols and symbolism in Hindu art. Referring to major classical Indian literary works shedding light on art and architecture, it undertakes a survey of Indian art and temple architecture from the 3 century BC through the medieval period, highlighting the directional changes that marked the history of art, specifically sculpture and painting. It elaborately views the various terms and concepts associated with the field of art and iconography like mudras, asanas, pithas, explaining the nature of Buddhist and Jain deities as well as those of Hindu sects like Saivism, Vaisnavism and Saktism. Pointing out the importance of studying Hindu temple architecture in order to fully appreciate Hindu art which was meant for propagation of dharma, it analyses the basic features of the temple architecture and its regional variants. Tracing the differences in conception and delineation of a Hindu temple, a Muslim mosque and a Christian church, the research focuses particularly on the principles of visualisation of symbols and signs in Hinduism and Christianity. It also reveals how the West has viewed Indian literature and art, exposing the inner contradictions of some European thinkers who while praising literary works of Kalidasa and others condemned the Hindu images. The work contains more than 300 illustrations, half-tone and line drawings, that make the discussion easy to comprehend for a range of readers and scholars, students as well as laymen Printed Pages: 160 with maps and illustrations. 000552
