The Reciprocated Silence: The Modern Individual and Religious Misunderstanding
Concept Publishing Company Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2013; 8180699242; Hardcover; New; New;
All Societies and Cultures have the idea that the supernatural exists and endures. Many people have relationships with the supernatural from which they feel and indeed know has given them personal benefits. It is a reciprocal relationship in which many invest and get a return. Many people feel that they have established a one-sided relationship with the supernatural despite the silence of the supernatural to respond. This book is a study of this reciprocal silence in which many men and women relate to the supernatural personally. They pray for some respite from misfortune and in the order of things many get what they have prayed for. Whatever the supernatural is composed of whether gods, goddess, saints, ancestors, there are in many societies a network of relationships channelled through priests and diviners who are accepted as having this ability. This study is an attempt to explain the continuation of religion for which there can be no rational explanations. Humans have created religious systems which have universally produced benign and malign consequences. for their emotional and social stability. and these change in their forms and functions along with changes in their forms and functions as individuals and their societies as these change. stability as these change their form and function. Reciprocal silence in religion is a feature as common in Manchester and Mumbai as in many less development tribal societies. Printed Pages: 440. 112119

Violence and Religion: Cross Cultural Opinions and Consequences
Concept Publishing Company Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2007; 8180693767; Hardcover; New; New;
Violence for or against those who hold a religious belief has been common enough historically but has now become commoner in Africa, Asia and Europe. The majority of this violence has been Christian with Islam less prominent but now this preponderance is seemingly reversed. Buddhism, Hinduism and Taoism have been much less violent. There is always the difficulty that religion cannot be defined and religious behaviour is never isolatable from economic, social and political factors as well as psychological and ethological aspects combined with genetic issues. There is the violence done by spreading of disease by pilgrims and by the inbreeding of exclusive religious communities. This study examines violence and religion in a wider perspective than the occasions highlighted by the mass media. There is more to religious violence than killing, physical mutilation as a religious requirement, the compulsions and anxieties required by religious conformity, the domination of male interests as well as the destruction and exclusive use of materials. There is also the prevention and reduction of violence by religious people and institutions, the support of the sick, refugees, orphans and handicapped people and the protection of animals, as well as the creation of nature reserves round religious sites and as an aftermath of inter-religious fighting the reduction of population pressure on men and animals. Violence and religion combines overt regret and covert usefulness. Printed Pages: 370. 112147

Social Behaviour of Children: A Cross Culture Assessment
Concept Publishing Company Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2007; 8180693848; Hardcover; New; New;
The behaviour of children within ages defined in most countries without regard to biological maturity or social usefulness is often concentrated on their failure and the failure of their carers to conform to what their societies expect of them. This study attempts to show that children and their carers are genetically and ethologically channeled into behaviour to support the small groups in which they live. For most of our known global history children have been seen as economic, social and status assets to these small groups and their value assessed in proportion to their eventual contribution as adults. They are not taught to behave in contributory ways but are absorbed into their need to be useful in terms of all those with whom they associate. Cross-culturally the growth of individualism and the decline of usefulness of children for their parents have led to pro-social behaviour being much reduced to immediate benefits to children and for the small group in which they spend less and less time. Teaching children to be useful to an impersonal society in which they have little interest is an industry in modern states. Perhaps our conclusion must be that children will only behave in ways that their society deems correct when they sense on their own that it is profitable to do so. The ethical values which have historically maintained the necessary unity of the small group have faded with the growth of survival through secondary employment and State welfare provisions. India in the Fifteenth Century
Asian Educational Services; New Delhi, India; 2010; 8120607686; Reprint; Hardcover; New; New; 15 x 22 Cm
A very interesting book that is about 4 travelers who visited India prior to the discovery of the sea route to India by Vasco Da Gama. The travelers noticed are Abd-er-Razzak of Herat in Afghanistan. He was sent by the king of Herat on an embassy to the king of Vijayanagar. He came into India from Hormuz to Calicut; and via Mangalore and Belloor he reached Vijayanagar. The 2nd traveler mentioned is Niclo Conti a Venatian. He came into India at Cambay and went to Vijayanagar, Pennacoda, Tellicherry, Mailapur and then goes onto Ceylon. The Russian Nikitin is next. He landed in India at Chaul and made his way to Beder and from there to Calicut. The last is the Genoese Stefano. He sailed to Calicut from Cairo and having spent time there he proceeded to Pegu via Ceylon. The book has a lengthy introduction that discusses the various travelers who have visited India down the ages from the time of Alexander to the date of this book and even mentions the tales of Sindabad in it. Abd-ar-Razzak traveled from 1442 to 1444; Nikitin form 1468 to 1474; Conti from 1419-1444 and Stefano around 1498-1499. This book is a reprint of the 1858 edition.Printed Pages: 254. 102838

Amphibians of Peninsular India
Universities Press; Hyderabad, India; 2004; 8173715149; First Edition; Paperback; New; 15 x 23 Cm
Amphibians are considered to be the best indicators of environmental health. A decline in amphibian populations indicates ecosystem deterioration that might affect a wider spectrum of the earth's biological diversity. During the last 12 years there has been a great concern, worldwide, about the rapid decline in amphibian populations. Many reasons have been attributed to the loss of amphibians including habitat loss, UV-B radiation, global warming, toxic chemicals, pathogens that destroy eggs and larval stages, direct harvest and other. Of these, loss of habitat seems to be the most significant factor, at least in tropical countries. In this book, 72 species of Indian amphibians including caecilians have been described. These amphibians are common and widely distributed in peninsular India and represent about one third of all amphibian species known in India. The descriptions are simple and contain, although limited, details of other closely-related species, taking the actual number of amphibian species discussed to well over 100. The many illustrations provided throughout the species accounts and the illustrated keys should make it possible for students and amateur naturalists to identify amphibians in the field without much difficulty. To avoid any confusion that might arise from scientific names that keep changing, those names that have been the most consistently used in India names that have been retained in this book. However, all recent changes have been included as synonyms. Additionally, an appendix that lists out all the known species of Indian amphibians (at the time that the book was written) has been provided. Printed Pages: 284. 027800

The State, IT and Development
Sage Publications; New Delhi, India; 2005; 0761933980; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New; 5.5 x 8.5 Inches
Information technology (IT) has brought about a major shift in the nature and speed of knowledge processing, thereby transforming the way business and, indeed, governments, function. An integral aspect of social capital, IT can either be an empowering force for the marginalized, or be instrumental in creating a new dimension of inequality. Harnessing IT for effective socio-economic transformation into an epistemic society has created a need to revisit prevailing notions of governance and development in the country, which is confronted with resource constraints and a yawning digital divide. Conceived against this background, this volume consists of 21 chapters written by authorities responsible for planning and implementing IT in India, including the President of India, H.E. Dr A P J Abdul Kalam, senior government officials, IT professionals and scholars. The volume contains case studies of the application of IT in India, both in agriculture and in improving public service delivery systems. Printed Pages: 316. 013343

Philosophical Concept of God
Akansha Publishing House; New Delhi, India; 2002; 8187606215; Hardcover; New; New;
The idea of God is the idea of an infinite, eternal, immutable, self-subsistent, omniscient and omnipotent being. Some have urged that the idea of God is a pure Construction of the human mind, put together by raising arbitrarily to Infinity such excellences, as humanity possesses. This Book has given more attention to Descartes aim, method, methodic doubt and cogito ergo sum. It also discusses God from the standpoint of Geometry, Theology and philosophy. The causal argument for the existence of God owes its origin mainly to Aristotle in European philosophy. The first cause argument was set forth in detail by Aristotle and it was accepted by his followers particularly by the theologians in the Medireview period. An attempt is made to examine in detail about the view of Aristotle, Descartes, Hume and Kan; The Ontological argument has been regarded, as the corner stone in the scheme of things. It is the most important argument to prove the existence of God, where the existence of God is proved from the idea of God. An attempt is made to evaluate ontological argument in its various forms in the light of contemporary reflections. Problems about existence, reference and necessity are also discussed. The role of God plays a very important role in Cartesian philosophy. Like any other moderners, Descartes could not change the entire legacies, particularly the mental legacy. As a result of this, God is the central problem for him. This book will certainly helpful to all the readers, particularly the readers of philosophy, religion, and spirituality. Table of Contents Foreword Preface 1. Introduction 2. Geometry, Theology and Philosophy 3. Descartes` Philosophical Argument for the Existence of God 4. The Cosmological Argument 5. The Ontological Argument 6. Role of God in Cartesian Philosophy 7. Conclusion Printed Pages: 139. 110199

Indian labour law refers to law regulating employment in Indian. There are over fifty laws and many more state-level laws. Thaditionally Indian government at federal and state level have sought to ensure a high degree of protection for workers. So for instance, a permanent worker can be terminated only for proven misconduct or for habitual absence. Moreover, it took two decades to complete the legal process. In 2008, the World Bank has criticized the complexity, lack of mordernisation and flexibility in Indian regulations. India can boast of the world workforce by 2025, provided the country harnesses the potential of its young and productive population. It also ranked that states on the basis of improvement in their labour ecosystems in terms of State efforts in various areas like education and training, infrastructure, governance and the legal/regulatory structure. When Shiva Smiles
Wisdom Tree; New Delhi, India; 8183283322; Softcover; New;
Om, the handsome son of the head-priest of an almost unreachable hilltop Shiva temple, has been yearning to see the world below. The brief visit of the beautiful mountaineer, Anjali, sets his heart on fire, acting as a catalyst to his journey. One night, he runs away from the temple to catch up with Anjali in her city, but not before asking Shiva to forgive him. And Shiva smiles! Om's journey is eventful as he interacts with various performances on the world stage, experiencing every facet of human emotion. Om meets Anjali and the narrative unfolds into a melodramatic love triangle, where Girish, the over possessive lover is determined to keep them apart in every which way. Does Om find his true love in Anjali? Or, does the glamorous city life lure Om away from her, and even Shiva? Or, does all this bring him closer to his inner self? Karl Marx and Babasaheb Ambedkar: A Comparative Study
Kalpaz Publications/Gyan Books Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2015; 9789351280989; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New;
This book reveals the thought of Karl Marx and Babasaheb Ambedkar in their real perspective and attempts to compare their thoughts rationally and judiciously . It is, however based on original text by Karl Marx and Babasaheb Ambedkar and learned commentaries by renowned authors on their thoughts. The present generation is presumably in great dilemma as to which philosophy would liberate them from the precarious situation cropped up due to advancing globalization and privatization, at one hand and grinding poverty , and fast spreading terrorism, at the other . People are in search of a viable philosophy for obliterating injustice and availing sustainable peace, progress and justice. This study would certainly help them in coming to the right decision. However , there seems to be acute dearth of comparative study of their thoughts, which is required for proper comprehension, In this situation, this book would certainly serve the purpose.Printed Pages: 238. 106161

The Distorted Mirror
Penguin; New Delhi, India; 2004; 0143031333; First Edition; Paperback; New; New; 13 Cms x 20 Cms
R.K. Laxman, cartoonist par excellence, is also one of the country’s most entertaining writers. The Distorted Mirror brings together some of his best short stories, essays and travelogues. The collection begins with ‘An Accident’, a most unusual mystery story where the murder weapon is a newspaper. In other stories, we are introduced to Gopal, a schoolboy in an ordinary small town that is transformed one day when the Viceroy visits; Shantha, a little girl who makes an interesting discovery in the midst of a wedding; and Bhasker, a writer who is suddenly confronted by his past. Each story is marked by Laxman’s ability to delineate a character or a moment with a few deft strokes and imbued with his trademark wit. No less fascinating are the travelogues about the United States, Australia, the Andamans, Darjeeling, Mauritius and Kathmandu which are brought to life by Laxman’s vivid descriptions and his inimitable way of looking at the world around him. The collection is rounded off with a few rare and delightful anecdotes about Laxman’s cartooning career, a subject on which he is usually reticent. Accompanied by Laxman’s illustrations, the pieces in The Distorted Mirror will amuse and entertain every fan of R.K. Laxman’s. Printed Pages: 176. 002768

An Uncommon Man
Times Group Books; New Delhi, India; 2015; 9789384038670; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New;
RK Laxman was born and educated in Mysore but lived the better part of his life in Mumbai as the cartoonist of The Times of India. For half a century, his ‘Common Man’, that silent but eloquent sum of all that is India, faithfully kept his early morning date with readers. On the rare occasion that Laxman either forgot to include him in the ‘You Said It’ cartoon or allowed him a day’s casual leave, letters would flood the Times office, demanding an explanation for the lapse. The cartoonist soon had to accept, with a dry paternal pride, that ‘this fellow’ had taken on a life of his own, and that his legion protectors had a very decided idea on what he should wear and how he should travel — the aeroplane was frowned on as decadent. The reader-cartoonist bond over these tumultuous decades can be compared to the rock-steady, if demanding, marriage that the ‘Common Man’ has with his talkative wife, who Laxman once complained, thinks nothing of briefing the American President on foreign policy while her husband stands by with the look of one who had to quote PG Wodehouse, “swallowed an east wind”. Although representative of his long career, selecting these cartoons from his vast trove was, to put it mildly, an exercise in separating the wheat from the wheat. RK Laxman left for his heavenly abode on 26 January, 2015, at Pune.Printed Pages: 154. 104990

Gayatri is a profound prayer. It is an authentic prayer that elevates, exhilarates and nlightens. According to Hindu scriptures, a prayer in its real sense is not just chanting of a few verses. V & S Publishers; New Delhi, India; 9789381384763; Softcover; New;
Humorous Middles is a fine collection of humorous middles, published in major newspapers and magazines. What is it that makes the middle stand apart? The middle is a short composition, hardly ever more than 600 to 800 words. It draws strength from its in-built humour that skips and romps with the deftness of a mountain goat. It thus turns into a sort of mirror, at times, concave, at times, convex, (never does it remain a plain mirror), and manages to see what lies behind the even contours, that people, events or encounters present. The 120 odd middles compiled in this book were written over a period of about 40 years. They have enough power to evoke laughter at every turn. All of them are distinctly individualistic and are powered by what one may say, the ability to tickle the funny bone. Printed Pages: 100. 108749
