Kaunda Bhatta's Vaiyakaranabhusanasara: An Analytical Study
Munshiram Manoharlal Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 1998; 8185636419; First Edition; Hardbound; New; New; 15 Cms x 23 Cms
Kaunda Bhatta's Vaiyakaranabhusanasara is an abridgement of his own attempt at logical systematization of Panini's Grammar. It presents an argument to show the reason for the differing interpretations of the Paninian rules by Mimamsakas and Naiyayikas on the one hand, and Grammarians on the other. Through an analysis of verbal roots, conjugational, declensional, primary and secondary affixes, compounds, prefixes and particles; and a study of sphota, it explicates Grammarians' outlook on verbal cognition. The present study is a critical examination of Kaunda Bhatta's arguments. It brings out the relevance of Paninian Grammar in understanding the modern theories of meaning, semantics and syntax. India Abroad: Diasporic Cultures of Postwar America and England
Orient BlackSwan; New Delhi, India; 2005; 8125027750; First Edition; Paperback; New; 15 Cms x 23 Cms
India Abroad analyses the development of Indian diasporas in the United States and England from 1947, the year of Indian independence, to the present. Across different spheres of culture---festivals, enterpreneurial enclaves, fiction, autobiography, newspapers, music and film---migrants have created India as a way to negotiate life in the multicultural United States and Britain. Sandhya Shukla considers how Indian diaspora has become a contact zone for various formations of identity and disclosures of nation. She suggests that carefully reading the production of a diasporic sensibility, one that is not simply an outgrowth of the nation-state, helps us to conceive of multiple imaginaries, of America, England, and India, as articulated to one another. Both the connections and disconnections among peoples who see themselves as in some way Indian are brought into focus by this comparativist approach. Printed Pages: 332. 031526

Phantasmic Anatomy of the Statues of Mathura
Munshiram Manoharlal Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2000; 8121509068; First Edition; Hard Cover; New; New; 19 Cms x 25 Cms
The specificity of the images of Mathura lies in the invention of forms which can translate the diverse personalities of the divinities of the Hindu pantheon. The creation of phantasmic anatomy in the domain of imaginaire, instead of being monstrous, accord a perfect harmony between form and signification. the human figure, the basic form, is transformed into divine form. It is one of the great inventions of Indian art. The impossible associations in the real word create a very natural universe of gods. The present monograph ends with the history of the reactions of the European travellers to icons which were so different from their classical ideal of beauty. It leads to a reflection on the problematics of perception and assimilation of form. Printed Pages: 144 with 154 line figures, 4 coloured and 16 b/w illustrations. 029148

The Essential Teachings of the Buddha
Motilal Banarsidass Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 8178222701; Softcover; New;
What is the meaning of life? How can we be truly happy? These questions are no less pressing for having been asked so many times. In Buddhism, the answer is to be found in the Dharma - a traditional term which means both 'the Truth' and 'the Path'. Guided by a lifetime's experience of Buddhist practice, Sangharakshita tackles the question: 'What is the Dharma?' from many different angles. The result is a basic starter kit of teachings and practices, which emphasizes the fundamentally practical nature of Buddhism. In turn refreshing, unsettling, and inspiring, this book lays before us the essential Dharma, timeless and universal: the Truth that addresses the deepest questions of our hearts and minds and the Path that shows us how we can renew our lives. 102358

Shyam Benegal
Roli Books; New Delhi, India; 2003; 8174362819; First Edition; Hard Cover; New; New; 14 Cms x 22 Cms
Shyam Benegal is one of the most prolific contemporary film-makers from India’s ‘New Cinema’. From his first film Ankur (1974) through to Zubeidaa (2000), he has explored the contradictions and tensions of a society in rapid transition, with a unique focus on the female protagonists. Sangeeta Dutta’s book traces a career with its beginnings in political cinema and a realist aesthetic. It shows how the struggles of women, the dispossessed and marginalized in Indian society find expression in films as diverse as Nishant, Bhumika, Mandi, Suraj Ka Satwan Ghoda and Kalyug. It traces Benegal’s work with some of the biggest names in Indian cinema—Shabana Azmi, Smita Patil, Naseeruddin Shah, Om Puri, Govind Nihalani and more recently Karishma Kapoor and A. R. Rahman—developing a style and ethos uniquely his. It also explains how the director’s work presents both a stark contrast to Bollywood and yet contains creative continuities both with commercial cinema and his distinguished predecessor Satyajit Ray. Perhaps no other director has come close to painting such a compelling and vivid portrait of modern India. Printed Pages:296. 015836

Women, Social Exclusion and Inclusion
Kalpaz Publications/Gyan Books Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2015; 9789351280729; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New;
In the last couple of years there has been a spurt of growing interest in and awareness about questions of social exclusion and inclusion. While the nature of exclusion in India has centred around the caste system, other disadvantaged groups such as tribals, women and poor have also suffered from similar disabilities. Their politics of exclusion and inclusion, censure and celebration shows that they wish to be a part of the so-called mainstream academic discourse yet cannot be. The objectives of this book have been to discuss about social exclusion arising out of institutions of caste and gender in Indian society and the inclusive policies designed for them. Besides, the long history of struggle that led to the emergence of India's reservation policy as a mechanism of inclusion for the segment of the Indian population that has been subjected to social abuse , dispossession , indignity, impoverishment and discrimination for millennia demands, that is precisely what this book also tries to discuss, depicting from Jotiba Phule's contribution in the field of education to the framing of Constitution by Ambedkar. This book also attempts to address to what extent government's initiatives have been instrumental in translating the search for inclusivity into a reality.Printed Pages: 302. 106177

The Concept of War: In Indian and Western Political Thought
D.K. Printworld (P) Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2014; 812460732X; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New; 15 x 23 Cm
War makes life miserable for both the parties involved, the invader and the invaded. No war is fought without losing men and material, stripping off societal life and political order. Simultaneously it contributes to the progress of the society and preserves the liberty and honour of a state. From the Vedic period of India and the epic period of Greece, we have records of wars, and deliberations on the logic, philosophy, politics, ethics, strategies (pre- and post-war) of war, and the ways of reconstructing the war-ravaged societies, paving the way for drastic social and economic changes. This volume scans the Indian and Western views and approaches on war in the ancient and modern times. To understand the concept of war in ancient period, it analyses Rigveda, Manusmriti, Ramayana, Mahabharata and Arthashastra from the Indian parlance and the philosophies of Plato and Aristotle from the Western perspectives. It also makes an in-depth study on the war philosophies of modern Indian leaders like Mahatma Gandhi, Sri Aurobindo, Vinayak Damodar Savarkar and S. Radhakrishnan, and Western philosophers like John Locke, Immanuel Kant, Georg Friedrich Hegel and Bertrand Russell. The book also explains the nature of war, its socio-economic and political aspects, and how the moral and social ethical concepts are related pragmatically to the issue of war. The author echoes serious concerns about the ways by which the present-day global majors approach war.Printed Pages: 222. 100363

Bollywood movies and their signature song and dance spectacles are an aesthetic familiar to people around the world, and Bollywood music now provides the rhythm for ads marketing goods such as computers and a beat for remixes and underground bands. These musical numbers have inspired scenes in Western films such as Vanity Fair and Moulin Rouge. Global Bollywood shows how this currency in popular culture and among diasporic communities marks only the latest phase of the genre’s world travels. This interdisciplinary collection describes the many roots and routes of the Bollywood song and dance spectacle. Examining the reception of Bollywood music in places as diverse as Indonesia and Israel, the essays offer a stimulating redefinition of globalization, highlighting the cultural influence of Hindi film music from its origins early in the twentieth century today. Reproductive Restraints: Birth Control in India, 1877-1947
Permanent Black; New Delhi, India; 2008; 817824229X; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New; 14 Cms x 22 Cms
This book is an investigation of elitist initiatives to limit population growth in India. Reproductive Restraints traces the history of contraception use and population management in colonial India, while illuminating its connection to contemporary debates in India and birth control movements in Great Britain and the United States. Sanjam Ahluwalia draws attention to the interactive and relational history of Indian birth control by including Western activists such as Margaret Sanger and Marie Stopes alongside important Indian campaigners. In revealing the elitist politics of middle-class feminists, Indian nationalists, Western activists, colonial authorities, and the medical establishment Ahluwalia finds that they all sought to rationalize procreation and regulate women while invoking competing notions of freedom, femininity, and family. Ahluwalia’s remarkable interviews with practising midwives in rural northern India fills a gaping void in the documentary history of birth control and shows that the movement has had little appeal to non-elite groups in India. Finding that Jaunpuri women’s reproductive decisions are bound to their emotional, cultural, and economic reliance on family and community, Ahluwalia overwhelmingly demonstrates the limits of deploying universal liberal feminist categories to understand varying localized subjects. She argues that elitist birth control efforts, since colonial times, have failed to account for Indian women’s values and needs, working more to restrict reproductive rights rather than liberate subaltern Indian women. The Sound of Water
IndiaInk/Roli Books; New Delhi, India; 8186939466; Softcover; New;
'In this dark and remorseless world, there are no winners or losers. There are only survivors.'Loosely based on the disastrous flooding of the Bagdighi colliery (now in Jharkhand) in 2001, which trapped and killed dozens of miners, Sanjay Bahadur recreates the eventful hours of a disaster in the fast-paced and intriguing narrative that moves between the real and the surreal. Raimotor, an old miner, trapped hundreds of feet below the surface of the earth, struggles to save himself and his fellow miners. Meanwhile, the officials from the mining company and the government, more concerned about their careers, launch a 'rescue operation of their own. And Madho, Raimoti's brother, and his wife, Dolly, eagerly anticipate compensation. The Sound of Water is a searching fictional expose of the conditions of mining of India. The story is as much an exposition of despairing minds as it is about the high voltage drama of a mining accident. But pitted against constant fear of death, mind-numbing work, greed and the establishment's apathy is the power of spiritual strength and conviction that enables one to survive the odds. Other Lives, Other Fragments
Niyogi Books; New Delhi, India; 9789381523803; Hardcover; New; New;
Other Lives, Other Fragments is a tale of fragmented identities, of lives broken and destroyed during violent times. It looks at the human story behind cataclysmic events through the diary of Badrul Islam, dispossessed during the 1947 and 1971 riots, and the tale of Manik, a boy who is from nowhere and is going nowhere, and how their lives touch each other. Through these searing portrayals the author tries to explore the implications of acts of hate undertaken in the name of religion and politics. As the novel moves towards its thrilling conclusion, we are left wondering what a tangled web of suffering we weave when we first practise to hate. And how many barriers we can break down when we love.Printed Pages: 216. 106554

Network-Centric Warfare: How we Think, See and Fight in the Information Age
KW Publishers; New Delhi, India; 2012; 9789380502588; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New;
The present age widely referred to as the information age has changed the nature of wars not in degree but in kind. Warfare is no longer confined to the militaries or to the battlefields but has transcended into the civilian domain; today, it also involves the entire government infrastructure, the commercial and economic zones. Network Centric Warfare (NCW) is applicable to all levels of warfare and contributes to the coalescence of strategy, operations and tactics. It is transparent to the mission, force size, its composition and geography. NCW has many attributes which has enabled it to become as potent as it is today. These characteristics have been made possible mainly due to technology and rapid progress in every sphere which has ensured rapid computing and diminishing the tyranny of distances. While the Nuclear Age spawned a return to limited war, the Information Age has had its own unique impact on the conduct of military operations. This century has been characterised by the widespread impact of technology in many fields. Information, communications and data processing have profoundly influenced every significant aspect of human activity and have irrevocably transformed war-fighting methodology. The distinction between war and peace has blurred and is reaching the vanishing point with no definable battlefields or fronts. The distinction between "civilian" and "military" is fast disappearing as is evident from the number of cyber intrusions in the defence, scientific, banking and commercial sectors the world over. As a result, most states today are perpetually at war; a war of a different kind, not against tangible elements but against bits and bytes.Terrorism is a reality today; it is a growing menace in the civilised society and is here to stay. It has taken warfare into the civilian domain. It is difficult to predict where, when and what will be struck and, therefore, not possible to keep a standing force at all vulnerable points. This has led to wars of the present being more covert, with the adversaries learning to use the strengths of the Information Technology (IT) against the proponents. This information war is split between the offensive and the defensive. The advantage more often than not lies with the attacker who can choose the time and place of the attack. The blurring of offence and defence reflects the dual nature of NCW; it tends to defy and cut across standard boundaries, jurisdictions, and distinctions between state and society, public and private, war and peace, war and crime, civilian and military, police and military, and legal and illegal. This makes it difficult, if not impossible, for a government to assign responsibility to any single agency — e.g., military, police, or intelligence—to be in charge of responding. Sharing information and massing of forces becomes critical for quick and effective action. Printed Pages: 262. 104351

Electronic Warfare: War in the Fourth Dimension
KW Publishers; New Delhi, India; 2009; 8187966807; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New;
Land, water and air were the three dimensions in which wars were traditionally fought. The advent of electronic warfare (EW) ushered in the fourth dimension, which not only influenced the other three dimensions but also had an impact on shaping strategy and development of weapon systems and platforms. In fact, most of the systems developed since electronic warfare found its predominant place in conflicts, were inevitably intertwined with it. This book is an attempt to delve into, and analyse, the effects of electronic warfare on modern weapon systems and the subtle manner in which warfare has changed after its inception. For example the development of contemporary systems like stealth and unmanned aerial vehicles are outcomes of the need to evade the highly potent surface to air missiles and their associated radars, and the requirement to avoid human casualties. The latest victim of electronic warfare is the global positioning system (GPS). The impact of this navigational system has been stunning. Its employment in commercial and military applications has acquired gigantic proportions. However the system is highly vulnerable to jamming, a fact often ignored in the enthusiasm to climb the GPS bandwagon—something we should be wary of while developing our own systems. The author dwells on the effects of intentional and unintentional interference of electromagnetic energy on this very versatile system. Directed energy weapons (DEWs) are a new type of weapon system, never fielded before. They use electromagnetic energy (light and radio energy) to attack and destroy targets at the speed of light—years of research has made this possible. DEWs, which promise to transform what was in the realm science fiction into reality, have also been discussed. According to the author, electronic warfare in the future will metamorphose into more subtle and ingenious forms to get the better of the evolving systems like net centric warfare, cyber warfare, etc. Systems demonstrating this metamorphosis already exist. This book is a must read for all students and for the elite who exploit the electromagnetic spectrum to enable them to appreciate how this invisible weapon will affect their operations now and in the future.Printed Pages: 220. 104437

Creating Best Value Options in Defence Procurement: Application of Operations Research in Source Selection
KW Publishers; New Delhi, India; 2015; 9789383649686; First Edition; Softcover; New;
In the last two decades, the Indian capital defence procurement systems have not only undergone systematic codification, but have also been through an incremental process of continuous improvement. Each new version of the Defence Procurement Procedure (DPP) has endeavoured to bring in process efficiencies, and has attempted to solve functional problems posed by its predecessor. However, neither has the procedure lost its ‘one size fits all character’, nor has it seen induction of any of the international best practices. Above all, it is completely devoid of Operations Research methods or quantitative tools. The capital procurement procedure has not seen any dramatic change in its approach to procurement, and consequently its yield has remained more or less static.The writers of the DPP argue that the procedure addresses many concerns that include the need for faster and expeditious procurement, reducing dependence on imports, development of indigenous defence industry and, above all, avoidance of corruption. These concerns are real and undoubtedly deserve attention. However, the attention that these issues have attracted in the recent past has overshadowed and obscured, to a great degree, two of the fundamental requirements which the DPP should address—satisfaction of the end customer-soldier in the field, and ensuring that the most apt procurement processes and techniques are exploited to develop defence capability. The DPP has serious limitations when it comes to delivery of best value. Over the years, not much has been done to address this concern. The fact that the procedure relies on just a single source selection methodology, wherein price plays a dominant role, is ample proof of its limitations at delivering best value.The book offers alternative methods for source selection, with a view to ensure delivery of best value to the end customer, in all acquisition cases. It suggests Operations Research tools which can make a significant difference to our source selection processes. The author has studied the public and defence procurement regulations of the United States, the European Union, the United Kingdom, Australia, and the United Nation, and has also included in this work many of the international best practices which can be absorbed by the Indian defence procurement system.Printed Pages: 156. 105024

Is ‘Indian Civilization’ a Myth?: Fictions and Histories
Permanent Black; New Delhi, India; 2015; 8178244616; First Edition; Paperback; New; 15 x 23 Cm
In the title essay of this enthralling collection, Sanjay Subrahmanyam sets a provocative ball rolling: ‘At the heart of the matter’, he says, ‘is the notion that at some distant point in the past, say about AD 500, the concept of “Indian civilization” had already been perfected. Everything of any importance was in place: social structure, philosophy, the major literary works … The central idea here is of India-as-civilization, and it very soon becomes the same as a notion of closed India.’ Demolishing some of the myths which sustain the notion of ‘the wonder that was India’, he shows us a region that was always more a crossroads, a rendezvous for concepts, cultures, and worldviews. Subrahmanyam’s book is itself a meeting point for a dazzling variety of ideas. It provides the cosmopolitan perspective of a multilingual world scholar who, having begun life in New Delhi, has gone on to live in several thought-provoking cities, including Paris, Lisbon, and Oxford. He is witty, debunking, iconoclastic, and polemically entertaining in all that he anatomizes here—Indian history and fiction, South Asian cultural forms, imperialism and imperialists, secularism and Hindu nationalism, travel writing, and the central conceits in Hemingway, Rushdie, Naipaul, and Marquez. Subrahmanyam is renowned as a historian and biographer. This book, which makes us rethink India and the world around it, is the first to reveal that he is also a writer of accessible and delightful English prose. Printed Pages: 276. 038341

Land, Politics and Trade in South Asia
Oxford University Press; New Delhi, India; 2004; 0195667077; First Edition; Hard Cover; New; New; 14 Cms x 22 Cms
Originally planned as a festschrift for Dharma Kumar, this collection of outstanding essays has recently appeared as a special issue of IESHR. The essays represent a diversity of views and methods, all of which are brought to bear on issues concerning various aspects of the economy, society and culture of colonial India. Particular topics focused on include the agrarian history of South India, common lands in western India, the nexus between trade and production, the textile trade in twentieth-century South India, the nature of collaboration and conflict between the Dutch East India Company and private Portuguese traders in the Indian Ocean, adventurers who accompanied and participated in the colonial transition in South India and the rise of the coffee house in colonial Tamil Nadu. In the Introduction Sanjay Subrahmanyam attempts to carry out the difficult exercise of making sense of Indian historiography . For the book version, the editor has expanded on this Introduction, an d he has also added two more essays: Ravi Ahuja s State Formation and Famine Policy in Early Colonial India', and Thomas Trautmann's 'Dr Johnson and the Pandits: Imaging the Perfect Dictionary in Colonial Madras'.Eminent historians have contributed to this volume in memory of Dharma Kumar, whose intellectual contribution as an economic historian and editor is undisputed. This collection of outstanding essays represents the dynamic aspect of the history writing about the colonial period, with one eye always trained on its effects on understanding contemporary India. Sanjay Subrahmanyam s lucid introduction fulfils the task of making sense of Indian historiography and its evolving profile. Among the range of areas addressed by these essays, issues relating to south Indian agrarian history are covered by David Ludden and Tsukasa Mizushima, and the regional-language documentation regarding common lands in western India by Sumit Guha. Ravi Ahuja analyses the famine policy of the ea rly East India Company, and John Richards, Tirthankar Roy and Om Prakash address different aspects of the issue of trade in colonial India. Subrahmanyam uses a set of biographical instances to map colonial transitions in South India. Thomas Trautmann s essay looks at early colonial dictionaries in Madras to better understand the nature of early colonial cultural policy. A. R. Venkatachalapathy describes the rise of the coffee house in Tamil Nadu through an engaging combination of social and cultural history. Printed Pages: 336. 033290

The Raj Lives India in Nepal
Vitasta Publishing Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2008; 8189766732; Hardcover; New; New;
History, geography, religion and culture have bound Nepal and India into an extraordinary relationship. While many Nepalis actively participated in India’s Independence movement, New Delhi too has played an important role in the political evolution of its landlocked northern neighbour. These elements of affinity, exacerbated by asymmetries in area and population are, however, responsible for the rancour underlying the uneven relationship. Many Indians, like most Nepalis, are also exasperated by the resentment this proximity has produced. Preconceived notions and outright prejudices have tightened this embrace of estrangement.New Delhi’s ‘big brother act’ has been stifling for many Nepalis. This was more pronounced when Nepal got painted red with the incessant battering of the Maoist rebels and was split between monarchy and republicanism. This book takes an unconventional approach to India-Nepal relations. Devoid of the abstractions of the academic tomes that fill up bookshelves, this volume also steers clear of the detachment of a historical account. The book draws from a plethora of documents in the public record though it also relies on the author’s personal experience.The provocative title encapsulates the crisp message: How independent India has virtually adopted British colonial policies towards Nepal. By elucidating the misgivings and follies that have long constrained the relationship, the book sets out to explore the inherent possibilities. 107264

Durable Disorder: Understanding the Politics of Northeast India
Oxford University Press; New Delhi, India; 2005; 0195669819; First Edition; Hard Cover; New; New; 14 Cms x 22 Cms
For decades states in India's Northeast have experienced ethnic conflict and suffered human and material losses due to insurgency and counter-insurgency operations. This book analyses the causes and seeks to comprehend the political me aning and significance of persisting political violence. The author argues that prolonged counter-insurgency operations have eroded the democratic fabric of the region and institutionalized authoritarian practices. There is a growing dissonance between the idea of ethnic homelands and the actually existing political economy of the region that makes ethnic violence and internal displacements quite predictable. The book explores the economic incorporation of the region into the global capitalist economy in the 19th century and the resultant conflict between global and local resource use regimes. It delves into the historical roots of the region's oldest armed conflict--the Naga insurgency, and carries a detailed analysis of the United Liberation Front of Assam (ULFA) during different phases of its power and influence. The author argues for a reorientation of India's policy towards the Northeast and for linking it to a new foreign policy towards Southeast Asia. India should ta ke advantage of the cultural and spatial proximity of the Northeastern states to the ASEAN region. The economic integration of the region with Southeast Asia through the pursuit of a dynamic 'Look East'policy could go a long way in bringing about stability, peace, and prosperity. Beyond Counter-Insurgency: Breaking the Imasse in Northeast India
Oxford University Press; New Delhi, India; 2009; 0195698762; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New; 15 x 23 Cm
Northeast India has endured decades of conflicts that have kept much of the region militarized, subject to restrictions on civil rights, and economically underdeveloped. In this volume, contributors from diverse fields - ranging from the social sciences, philosophy, and cultural studies, to journalism and the civil services - reflect on new ways of approaching and resolving these conflicts. Dissatisfaction with conditions on the ground and with standard policy prescriptions is the common thread that runs through the book. The essays provide analyses of the conflicts at three levels: structural determinants like poverty and underdevelopment; the nature and politics of the postcolonial state; and the agency of multiple actors with diverse motives. The authors argue that neither a development nor a military fix can achieve peace in the region. Only concerted efforts to establish the rule of law, a system of accountability, and faith in the institutions of government can break the cycle of violence. Conveying a sense of Northeast India's rich and vibrant public discourse, this book will be useful to all those interested in armed conflicts, the state of Indian democracy, civil liberties, and Northeast India. Dilip Kumar: The Last Emperor
Rupa & Co.; New Delhi, India; 2004; 8129103613; First Edition; Hard Cover; New; New; 24 Cms x 24 Cms
This is the story of a man with humble beginnings yet, one who reached out and came away with a fistful of magical stardust. From being dismissed for being a non-actor in his debut film Jwarbhata to creating a small oeuvre that is admired by critics and repeatedly studied by actors to this day, Dilip Kumar has become a legend in his own lifetime. His tumultuous early years saw him crave for love with a yearning bordering on passion but it was as if fate conspired to deny it to him, till the time he found it in Saira Banu, the woman he married. He translated his real life angst into screen melodrama with such success that it brought him innumerable fans and the sobriquet of 'Tragedy King'. Although accused of being repetitive in his roles, he ensured that each of his characters was well delineated right down to the last nuance. Printed Pages: 152 001980

Expunging Variola: The Control and Eradication of Smallpox in India, 1947-1977
Orient BlackSwan; New Delhi, India; 2006; 8125030182; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New;
As a crucial component of the global smallpox eradication programme, which has been widely hailed as one of the greatest public health successes in the twentieth century, the Indian experience has some important stories to tell. Expunging Variola reveals these as it chronicles the last three decades of the anti-smallpox campaigns in India. This wide-ranging study, based on extensive archival research in India, Britain, Switzerland and the United States of America, assesses the many complexities in the formulation and implementation of the smallpox eradication programme in the subcontinent. Rather than merely cataloguing the developments of this extremely complex exercise within the World Health Organisation headquarters in Geneva and the Indian central government in New Delhi, this book adopts a much broader perspective: it makes a conscious effort to provide a detailed view by including the accounts of WHO, governmental and nongovernmental personnel on the ground. In this manner, nuanced descriptions of important – and often controversial – situations are provided. Thus, apart from acknowledging the influence of national-, state- and district-level political, economic and social structures in continually reshaping the contours of the smallpox campaigns, this work also emphasises the crucial role played by field workers in implementing and often reinterpreting health strategies proposed by Geneva and New Delhi. Original not only in perspective but in material, based as it is on a wide range of sources which have never been exploited by academics before, Expunging Variola breaks new ground in the historiography of smallpox eradication in the subcontinent. The book serves as a companion volume to Fractured States which covers the period 1800-1947. Printed Pages: 344. 031659

The Global Eradication of Smallpox (New Perspectives in South Asian History)
Orient BlackSwan; New Delhi, India; 2010; 8125039813; Softcover; New;
The Global Eradication of Smallpox is a product of two series of lectures presented at the Wellcome Trust Centre for the History of Medicine at UCL, London, in 2007 and 2008. The book contextualises the global programme and the many factors contributing to the certification of smallpox eradication worldwide in 1980. The volume contains first-hand stories of the "warriors" involved in eradicating smallpox (a goal considered by many to be impossible), the difficulties faced by them and the strategies adopted to overcome these difficulties. These contributions will, therefore, be of interest to teachers and students of public health, as well as those involved in designing and managing current and future disease elimination and eradication programmes. All the articles in the volume also highlight the importance of recognising the human factor in all major global health programmes-campaign managers of global health programmes and the members of target populations interacting in a complexity of ways. This volume delves into this important element of the global smallpox eradication programmes, whilst recognising that they cannot be easily quantified or made the subject of overarching generalisations.Printed Pages: 206. 101928

Fragments of Inequality (Social, Spatial, and Evolutionary Analyses of Income Distribution Series)
Routledge; London, UK; 2007; 0415952964; First Edition; Paperback; New; 150 x 225 Mm
Fragments of Inequality merges sociological, geospatial, and economic explanations of global inequality into a grand synthesis of the subject that breaks new ground by stressing the phenomenon's spatial foundations. Concentrating on inequality within and between regions, the book demonstrates that spatial inequality has increased in recent years. It employs modified evolutionary principles (i.e., punctuated equilibrium; not entirely smooth and linear in terms of chronological development) rather than the more abstract ones of rationality and self-interest that economists use, and on a fragmented rather than abstract conception of space. Global in its empirical coverage, it also addresses the current impact of economic globalization. Printed Pages: 280. 020839

Conflicts in the Northeast: Internal and External Effects
Vij Books India Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2011; 9789381411124; Hardcover; New; New;
Northeast India comprises of seven states – Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland and Tripura. This region has been the theatre of insurgency and ethnic-based armed conflicts for more than half a century making the region one of South Asia’s most disturbed areas. The instability in Northeast India is characterized by two distinct factors – ethnic clashes among the indigenous groups and political movement against the Union Government. The conflicting dynamics in the Northeast ranges from insurgency for secession to insurgency for autonomy, from terrorism to ethnic clashes, to problems of continuous inflow of migrants and the fight over resources. Moreover, vested interests and inter tribal and inter factional rivalry have led militant groups to continually clash among themselves, plunging the region in a vicious cycle of militancy, social violence and lack of economic growth. These armed conflicts have given impetus to small arms proliferation, narcotics trade and a parallel economy. The democratic deficits and how the Central Government and the states have addressed these concerns are of interest. The location of the region, politically and geographically, has a fundamental bearing on it and its people who aspire for different goals and how they try to reach these goals. The region shares borders with four countries: Myanmar, Bhutan, Bangladesh and Tibet/China and is connected to the Indian mainland by a narrow stretch of land. This adds to the trans – border ramifications to the conflicts.Printed Pages: 128. 103298
