A Treatise on Advaita Vedanta: English Translation of Vicaracandrodaya of Pandit Pitambar
D.K. Printworld (P) Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2013; 8124607079; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New; 15 x 23 Cm
A prakarana in old Hindi (one of the regional mixed dialects), Vicaracandrodaya elucidates the basic concepts of Advaita Vedanta in the form of questions and answers. Pandit Pitambar, the author of the text, presents this work as a dialogue between a guru and his disciple. This book is an English translation of Vicaracandrodaya, by S. Bhuvaneshwari. It is spread across 249 questions and their answers, and takes the reader into the essence of the entire Vedantashastra. It also has a Laghu-vedanta-kosha explaining the basic Vedantic terms and a chapter as “index” providing quick reference to the basic concepts of Advaita Vedanta. The author enunciates that a true knowledge seeker who studies this text under a brahmanishtha guru will get to know the “secrete knowledge” of Vedanta. And this knowledge will dispel darkness from his mind as the rising moon dispels darkness from the world. However, he insists that it should be studied from a guru with shraddha as Vedanta cannot be grasped without the guidance of an enlightened teacher. Also, this book serves as a ready reference to the basic concepts as discussed in Pancadashi of Vidyaranya and Vicarasagara of Nishcaladasa. This volume is both a guide to the beginners in Vedanta and a text for nididhyasana. It will benefit all the people who dwell in the domain of Vedanta.Printed Pages: 221. 100419

The Pedagogical Concern: An Analysis of the Sanskrit Vicarasagara of Vasudeva Brahmendra Sarasvati
D.K. Printworld (P) Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2015; 8124608180; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New; 15 x 23 Cm
This book is a critical study of the Sanskrit trans-creation of Vicharasagara — by Vasudeva Brahmendra Sarasvati — of Nishcaladasa in one of the dialects of Hindi and its tippani by Pitambar, again in the same dialect, imparting a unique teaching technique of Advaita to different types of aspirants. The book thus unfolds the teaching of Advaita depending on the need of different types of seekers — uttama, madhyama and kanishtha adhikaris. The volume focuses on two layers of concerns: first, of the appropriate modifications made by the trans-creator using simple Sanskrit and second, in the dialogue between the guru and the different adhikaris. This critical study introduces us to: (i) the life and works of Nishcaladasa, Pitambar and Vasudeva Brahmendra; (ii) emergence of adhikari-based pedagogy system; and (iii) the employment of pedagogical tools by the guru, depending upon the character and needs of the seeker. The related questions and discussions found in different tarangas of Vicarasagara are pooled in and presented in a cohesive manner to arrive at the core of Nishcaladasa’s work. It also delves deep into topics such as meditation and its efficacy as a means to gradual liberation, and the nature of liberation. The book, therefore, introduces the well-defined concepts of Vedanta in a simple pedagogical way as a dialogue between the preceptor and the student, helping even a layman to understand the nuances of Advaita, otherwise a hard subject to digest and grasp.Printed Pages: 384. 100537

The Joy of Thoughts
Indiana Publishing House; New Delhi, India; 8184083858; Softcover; New;
“Let noble thoughts come from all corners” ----Rig Veda. The Holy Quran also emphasizes to learn wisdom from cradle to grave. Prophet Mohammad supporting the above views said, “Knowledge is your lost jewel, pick it up wherever you find it lying.” In today’s materialistic world, there is no dearth of people who strive hard to earn wealth at the cost of their health. Whereas, there are a few wise men, who find solace in learning wisdom and for achieving this objective they go out hunting the treasure of learning.One such hunter is S. Chander, whose scrupulous thirst for seeking the light of knowledge always remains un-satiated. As Imam Ali once said, “There is enough light for one who wants to see…” Chander has collected the illuminating quotes of wisdom from Abraham Lincoln, Albert Einstein, Jawaharlal Nehru, Mahatma Gandhi, Martin Luther King Jr., Mother Teresa, Nelson Mandela, Rabindranath Tagore, Swami Vivekananda and compiled the same as Edition de luxe, captioned, “The Joy of Thoughts” it is a goblet of knowledge and zephyr of virtues, an edyth to be given to helluo librorum, who ought to say after reading it, Eureka! 109756

Journey to Lhasa and Central Tibet
Paljor Publications/Library of Tibetan Works & Archives; New Delhi, India; 2001; 8186230173; Hardcover; New; New;
Sarat Chandra Das is among the greatest pioneers of explorer and discoverer who ever entered Tibet. Born in 1849, in Eastern Bengal, in A Hindu Family of the vaidya, he received his education from the Presidency College at Calcutta, where he became favourably known to Sir Alfred Croft, who ever since has been his friend and guide in his geographical and literary work, and by whose representations to the Indian Government it became possible for him to perform his important journeys into Tibet.Mr. Das made his first journey into Tibet in 1879 at the invitation of the Tashi Lhunpo Monastery. His second journey was made in the late 1881. In both the journey, Lama Ugyen Gyatso, a Tibetan lama from Sikkim and connected with the reigning family of the State, acted as his guide and companion.In his journeys to Tibet, beginning with Tashi Lhunpo, a great centre of learning, Sarat Chandra Das explored the valley of Yarlung, where Tibetan civilization is said to have first made its appearance. The report of his journeys were printed in two separate publications by order of the Government of Bengal. They are entitled "Narrative of a Journey to Lhasa", and "Narrative of a Journey Round Lake Yamdok, and in Lhokha, Yarlung, and Sakya". For various reasons these reports were kept as strictly confidential documents by the Indian Government until about 1890.The amount of literary work accomplished by Sarat Chandra Das since his return from Tibet in 1883 is enormous. He brought back with him over two hundred volumes, manuscripts or block-prints, obtained from the great libraries in Tibet, a number of them in Sanskrit, and for past many centuries lost in India. For his achievements, he was awarded the title of Rai Bahadur by the Government of India, and in 1887 the Royal Geographical Society awarded him the "Back Premium" for his geographical researches.Printed Pages: 307. 103658

Vishnu: a step toward the infinite...
Munshiram Manoharlal Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2015; 8121512662; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New; 15 x 23 Cm
Indian culture is rich and its philosophy is robust, deep and capable of providing convincing answers to all questions. Since explaining the details of advanced philosophy to a layman is very difficult, our ancestors have devised the method of cultivating rituals. Among such rituals is the process of worship. Images, charts of mystic diagrams, paintings, stones and gems have been prescribed for daily worship to the common man. This book is an attempt to explain various forms of Vishnu and iconographical details of such images and also tries to bridge the gap between ritualistic approach to religion and the philosophical background of society. It is a guide to iconographic descriptions for the philosopher and a philosophical account for the simple devotee. This book is also a window into the evergreen forest of Indian narratives and is full of narratives related to Vishnu’s avataras as well as popular tales associated with popular temples. Individual chapters have been dedicated to every form listed in the Shrimadbhagavata. Details of iconographical proportions, interpretations of mudras, ayudhas, and bhangimas have been researched out of authoritative texts of Agamashastras and Shilpashastras. Many unknown forms of Vishnu like Badarayana, Shimshumara, and Gandabherunda have been included to widen readers’ intellect. Besides these, Appendices II and III deal with Vishnu ayudhas and Vishnu parivaara, respectively. As the title suggests, the book, however is small, but definitely, is a step toward the infinite. Ganesha Hora Shastram: Bhava Analysis, 2 Parts
Alpha Publications; New Delhi, India; 2003; 8179480712; First Edition; Hardbound; New; New; 19 Cms x 25 Cms
If someone were to ask what was the advantage of elaborating the indications and promises of different bhavas in such a detailed way as S. Ganesh has done in this book, the answers will be many. The same planetary placement and combination with its variegated meanings, is suspectible of positive and negative meaning, depressing sometimes and uplifting others times. To be able to do it, interpretative skill should be developed and no conclusion clinching formulae should be collected because astrology is both art and science, mathematics and interpretation. This book will answer a need. Primarily, American and Western readers will feel that they have now armed themselves with lot of predictive firepower which their own astrology never provides. It is only the Hindu astrology that is predictive - prodigiously, precariously and even prevaricatingly. Inherent in predictions are motivations and actions which is why Hindu astrology, without claiming or pretending to be psychological, is superbly psychological as western astrology never can be. The great merit of this book is that it is illustrative and interpretative where navamsha too has been used. The book had to become very bulky unavoidably. In seeing the illustrations given in this book always look at the navamsha also to understand the scheme of interpretation. It is because a uniform approach is followed in trying to standardize an interpretative method. This book is very brilliant, very stimulating. It is a sumptuous meal that will whet the appetites of many and help some hard working astrologer with a gift for synthesis to become a brilliant predictor. If you miss that you will people your world with ghosts and fears, instead of learning astrology properly, you will be gripped with fear psychosis. It should be kept in the mind that astrology offers an insight into the meaning and purpose of life and its predictable pattern of events and destiny. Printed Pages: 704. 000906

Student's Sanskrit-English-Hindi and English-Sanskrit-Hindi Dictionary (Second Edition)
New Bharatiya Book Corporation; New Delhi, India; 2007; 818315056X; Second Edition; Softcover; New;
A Dictionary needs no preface: but it become necessary, at the outset, to explain why a work of this type was undertaken when there are already some Dictionaries in Sanskrit. There is not a single work in existence giving both Sanskrit-English Hindi and English-Sanskrit Hindi Dictionaries in one volume. There are separate volumes in each, prepared by great scholars of Sanskrit; but their cost is too much for the pockets of a student of moderate means. My chief object, therefore, in compiling this dictionary has been to produce a volume of small size, giving all that students in High schools and at Colleges ordinarily require during their study of Sanskrit works, and at the same time to make it so cheap that even a poor student can easily afford to buy it. This Dictionary is divided into two parts. In the first part I have given Sanskrit words with their meaning in English, and in the second part English words with their equivalents in Sanskrit Hindi. While lecturing to Sanskrit classes of standard VII, and while coaching up private pupils for higher University Examinations, it was often brought to my notice that students cannot easily make feminines of adjectives and participles, and very few of them know the correct past passive participles of verbs, I have, therefore, given feminines of adjectives and also past passive participles of verbs which will be found printed in small brackets by the side of words. This is not done in the second part, as a student can easily find it out by referring to the same word in the first part.Printed Pages: 272. 104095

Method and Metaphysical Meditations
New Bharatiya Book Corporation; New Delhi, India; 2004; 8187418850; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New;
I have already touched upon these two questions of God and of the human soul, in the French discourse, upon the method of rightly conducting the reason and seeking truth in the sciences-not with the intention of treating them exhaustively, but merely in passing, in order to learn by the judgement that should be passed upon them, in what way I ought to treat them subsequently for they have always seemed to me to be of such importance, that I thought it proper to speak of them more than once. And the path which I take to explain them is so little trodden, and so far from the common road, that I did not believe it would be useful to indicate it in French, and in a treatise which could be read by everyone, for fear that feeble minds would believe that it was permissible for them also to attempt it.Now having begged, in this Method and Metaphysical Meditations, all those who should find in my writings anything worthy of censure, to do me the favour of informing me thereof, I have been offered no noticeable I objections except two things concerning what I said on these two heads, to which I wish to reply here in A Few words before undertaking their more exact explanation. Now after having sufficiently recognised the sentiments of men, I undertake over again the treatise of God, and of the human soul, and at the same time to lay the foundations of the first philosophy; but without expecting for it any praise from the vulgar, or hoping that my Book will be seen by many. On the contrary, I should never counsel any to read it, except those who wish, with me, to meditate seriously, and who shall be able to cut off their minds from communication with their senses, and deliver them entirely from all kinds of prejudices, - whom I know too well to be in very small number.Printed Pages: 192. 104067

A Broader Understanding of Yoga’
Bharatiya Kala Prakashan; Delhi, India; 2013; 8180903303; Softcover; New;
A Broader Understanding of Yoga is an outcome of sincere effort made by the author to delineate the true meaning and purpose of yoga by referring to ancient scriptures as well as by citing life histories and teachings of few great yogis and spritual personalities in brief. The book has dwelt on all the main streams of yoga in the light of their historical and philosophical backgrounds as well as on the basis of the fact that each yoga balances and strengthens the others. Students and teachers of yoga particularly, from the West are familiar with Hatha-Yoga, AEGA-Yoga, KuALalin-Yoga etc. as there are many books on these streams of yoga. On the other hand, reading materials on Karma-yoga, Jana-Yoga, Bhakti-Yoga, Vedanta etc. are not readily available to them. This book will therefore, contribute toward filling this void to some extent. Selected Vedic mantras are incorporated occasionally in some chapters especially, in the chapters pertaining to Bhakti-yoga. Further, Appendix-I of the book is exclusively assigned to few selected Sun mantras. It is hoped that the students of yoga will be greatly benefitted by integrating some of these mantras into their yoga practice. A Sanskrit Pronunciation Guide is also incorporated in the book so that the students of yoga can acquaint themselves with the exact pronunciation of the original Sanskrit terms. 110618

Devdasis in South India: A Journey from Sacred to a Profane Spaces
Kalpaz Publications/Gyan Books Pvt. Ltd; New Delhi, India; 9789351282105; Hardcover; New; New;
This book traces the gradual transition of the devadasi system from the early medieval to the modern society from sacred to profane spaces. In early medieval period these were women with a lot of wealth and standing dedicated to temples. The intervention of the colonial power introduced new economic patterns that influenced new kinds of social structure. The nation building process of the 19 century C.E. was largely constructed on female sexuality that brought concepts such as 'social purity', 'good women', and 'motherhood' to the forefront. This further weakened the social acceptance of the devadasi women. In the early 20 century C.E., devadasi lost both their social and economic base and became common prostitutes and eventually the devadasi institution faded away. This study uses qualitative methods, especially the methodologies of History and Gender Studies. Besides archival research, this research also carried out unstructured interviews with the last surviving devadasis. This book would be a very valuable resource for students and researchers of History, Women's history, Women's studies and Religion. Printed Pages: 322. 111549

Begum Akhtar: Loves Own Voice
Lustre Press/Roli Books; New Delhi, India; 8174365958; Hardcover; New; New;
Akhtaribai Faizabadi, or Begum Akhtar as she was later called, was a much loved classical diva of twentieth century India. The last of the great female singers from the courtesan (tawaif) community, Begum Akhtar effortlessly transcended that label to marry Barrister Ishtiaq Ahmed Abbassi of Lucknow. Witty, vibrant, and engaging with the world at various levels, here was a remarkable woman who took life head-on, and by many accounts, perhaps a bit recklessly. As a tawaif, she was trained to charm the system and subvert narrow patriarchal practices by means of highly sophisticated seduction. At another level, she was a hapless victim, constantly tormented by the twists and turns of her own destiny. She trudged on regardless, driven by a deep inner quest to pursue love in its purest form, as an end in itself; be it in music or in life. Begum Akhtar: Love's Own Voice documents her troubled and tempestuous life through the narratives of some of her closest friends and associates. Printed Pages: 84. 108594

Indian Alchemy: Soma in the Veda
Munshiram Manoharlal Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2004; 8121508800; First Edition; Cloth; New; New; 15 Cms x 23 Cms
The book is an epoch-making work-a paradigm-shift in Vedic studies-which identifies soma as electrum (gold-silver metallic compound). Soma is referred to in the Rgveda as the soul of the yajna (atmayajnasya). The path-breaking identification is based on textual evidence and a penetrating analysis of the Indian alchemical tradition, spanning nearly five millennia. The author is also the discoverer of the integrating role played by the mighty Sarasvati river adored in the Rgveda as the best of mothers, best of rivers and best of goddesses. Sarasvati and soma are no longer mythology but relevant to present-day children, respectively, as the repository of groundwater sanctuaries in north-west India and the metallurgical tradition starting with the Bronze Age Civilization, c. 3000 BC. Sarasvati and soma are the symbols of the great Indian traditions of devi worship and personification and deification of natural, material phenomena. The tirthas along the rivers are reminders of the critical nature of water management problems all over India and soma as an integral part of the yajna process, is the embodiment of the scientific, technological and materialist temper of ancient India. Indus Script Cipher (Hieroglyphs of Indian Linguistic Area)
Pratibha Prakashan; Delhi, India; 2010; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New;
For nearly130 years, the Indus script has remained a chalenging enigma to scholars of languages, writing systems and civilization studies. The script was invented and used over an extensive area of what is called the Indus or Sindhu-Sarasvati civilization. Over 2000 or 80% of archaeological sites are found on the Sarasvati River basin, a river adored in a very old human document called the Rigveda and which dried up due to tectonic and resulting river migration causes. In 1822, history was made when Egyptian hieroglyphs were deciphered by Jean-Francois Champollion from parts of the Rosetta Stone. Champollion showed that the Egyptian writing system, c.3000 BCE was a combination of phonetic and ideographic glyphs. The Rosetta Stone is dated196 BCE and had a decree in three versions: one in ancient Egyptian hieroglyphs, one in the Egyptian demotic script, and one in ancient Greek. Since alphabets of ancient Greek were known, Champollion used the trilingual inscription to validate his historic decipherment. Indus Script Cipher makes history recording hundreds of hieroglyphs of India. Absence of a Rosetta Stone which has been the principal impediment in validating any decryption of Indus script cipher is thus overcome. Further validation comes from evidences of the historical periods in India from c. 600 BCE showing continued use of Indus script hieroglyphs which evolved from c. 3300 BCE. This book details a decipherment.of the Indus script using the same rebus method used by Champollion to read ancient phonetic hieroglyphs of India.Printed Pages: 468. 101306

Vijayanagara: History and Legacy
Aryan Books International; New Delhi, India; 2000; 8173051682; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New; 18 x 25 Cm
The Vijayanagara Empire represents an important phase in Indian history. During its three hundred years of existence, it held sway over large parts of peninsular India from coast to coast covering Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Goa and substantial areas of Andhra Pradesh and Kerala. The greatness of the Vijayanagara Empire was however due not merely to its political strength but to the allround contribution that it made and its rich religious and cultural legacy. The object of the present volume is to pay tribute to the rich cultural legacy which the Vijayanagara Empire has bequeathed. The volume has been so devised so as to bring out the political, literary, artistic and religious aspects of the History of the Empire. It is hoped that this seminal work will enable the reader to have some glimpses of the rich cultural achievements of the Vijayanagara Empire and will also provide the necessary background to the ongoing researches on the different aspects of Vijayanagara.Printed Pages: 396 with 45 halftone illustrations. 100214

Socio-Economic Development of Tamil Nadu
Sharada Publishing House; Delhi, India; 2014; 8192698351; Hardcover; New; New; 19 x 25 Cm
The book deals with the social effort consisting of agriculture, social education, employment, health care, village industries and housing to rural people. In ancient days, the village committee helped in the functions and responsibilities of local bodies. The Madras Panchayat Act of 1958 and the Panchayat Raj System in 1959 introduced to raise the standard of living of the rural people by undertaking comprehensive measures to increase the production of food progressively from year to year and improve the living conditions. But the Panchayat Raj did not bring relief to the weaker sections of the community. The author points out that education is the most important single factor in achieving rapid development in economic as well as in technological fields. He tries to bring out the measures taken by the Government of Tamil Nadu to educate the rural masses and schemes adopted for women and child welfare. In detail the book deals with the government programmes of eradicating poverty in rural areas of Tamil Nadu. This book could be very useful in knowing the regional history and its development.Printed Pages: 199. 102728

Suburban Sahibs: Three Immigrant Families and Their Passage from India to America
Penguin; New Delhi, India; 2004; 0143031570; First Edition; Paperback; New; New; 13 Cms x 20 Cms
American-Born Confused Desi, Emigrated From Gujarat, Housed In Jersey, Keeping Lotsa Motels, Named Omkarnath Patel . . . Most Indians know that thousands of their compatriots live in New Jersey, USA, but the realities of these immigrants' lives are often obscured by the glamorous image of the wealthy NRI. In this pioneering profile of one of America's most dynamic ethnic communities, S. Mitra Kalita, an award-winning journalist at the Washington Post, enters the lives of three families—the Kotharis, Patels and Sarmas—and shows how diverse the Indian experience can be in one American locality. Increasingly moving straight to the suburbs rather than `paying their dues' in a city, New Jersey's Indians soon face issues of transportation, affordable housing and, on occasion, resentful reactions to their growing success. The fates of those on professional visas are tied to the economy, but others have continual difficulty finding jobs. Yet while parents struggle, their children often excel in school, and they all have plenty of company: the largest celebration of Navratri outside India now takes place in Edison, New Jersey. `Whiz kids Sankumani and Shravani Sarma,' says Kalita, `left a rapidly Americanizing India only to find a rapidly Indianizing America.' Lucid and compelling, Suburban Sahibs puts a human face on India's massive diaspora. Printed Pages: 216. 014123
