Gitanjali: Song Offerings
UBSPD; New Delhi, India; 2003; 8174764275; First Edition; Hard Cover; New; New; 19 Cms x 25 Cms
Even though the English translation of Gitanjali bears the same name as the original Bengali edition, the poems featured in the two editions are neither identical nor the same in number. The original Bengali edition had 157 poems as against the 103 prose pieces in the English edition. These 103 ‘verses’ are again translations of 104 poems in Bengali. This is because one English verse (verse 103) is a combined translation of two Bengali poems. On the left hand pages are featured the manuscripts of the original Bengali poems. The English translations done by the poet himself appear on the right hand pages. Wherever the original Bengali manuscript is not available the Bengali version of the poem has been reproduced. This edition features Introduction to Gitanjali by W.B. Yeats. The English translation of the introduction to the French edition of Gitanjali by Andre Gide. Photographs of the medal and citation of the Nobel Prize awarded to Rabindranath Tagore. A selection of newspaper clippings reporting the award of the Nobel Prize for literature to Tagore. Rabindranath Tagore’s Nobel Prize acceptance speech. Excerpts from introductions to Gitanjali translated in several languages will give readers a taste of the impact of the work across the world. The English translations have been set against a backdrop of photographs that will bring readers closer to the ambience of the place that was the cradle to this creative mind. Farewell My Friend
Jaico Publishing House; Delhi, India; 8184951647; Softcover; New;
The original Bengali novel Shesher Kavita (lit. Last Poem) was published in 1929. The author draws an amusing picture of an ultra-modern Bengali intellectual whose Oxford education, while giving him a superiority complex, has induced in him a craze for conscious originality which results in a deliberate and frivolous contrariness to all accepted opinion and convention. His aggressive self-complacence, however, receives a shock when as the result of an accidental meeting he falls in love with, and wins in return the heart of, a quite different product of modern culture a highly educated girl of fine sensibility and deep feelings. This love being more or less genuine and different from his previous experience of coquetry, releases his own submerged depth of sincerity, which he finds hard to adjust to the habits of sophistry and pose, practised so long.In the process he manages to strike a new romantic attitude. The struggle makes of him a curiously pathetic figure one who is being worked against his grain. The tragedy is understood by the girl, who releases him from his troth and disappears from his life. The last poem which she addresses to her lover gives evidence of the depth of feeling of which she was capable.Printed Pages: 188. 105486

Rabindranath Tagore: Words of the Master (Set of 12 Books)
Niyogi Books; New Delhi, India; 9789381523094; Softcover; New;
This is a set of twelve books by Rabindranath Tagore, translated by the master himself and originally published by MacMillan, New York during the first and third decades of the twentieth century. That was the time when Europe and America were devouring everything written by Tagore and were agog with the excitement of discovering an Eastern genius. With the degradation of moral values in the Western civilization and the spectre of another world war looming large before them, they looked up at Tagore as a possible saviour and felt moved by his vision of a unified universe. Despite this topical allusion, greatness of these books remain unchanged even after the lapse of a century and their appeal remains as strong as ever. The set contains four plays, five poetry collections and two books of essays. We hope these slim volumes will mitigate the frequently heard complaint that the big rachanavalis are not portable and often even beyond the reach of the average readers. 106527

Devoid of aggression and angst, they are like a breath of fresh air, which enlightens the soul. Gitanjali’s canvas encompasses life’s experiences with an innocence and simplicity that one does not find elsewhere in literature.The great Irish poet, W.B. Yeats, was inspired to write an introduction to Gitanjali when he heard and saw women in the tea fields of rural Bengal singing Tagore’s songs and poems with great fervour.Tagore (1861-1941), achieved fame as a novelist, playwright, poet, painter, lecturer, politician and composer. His tours of friendship and amity across continents gave him the privilege of being the voice of India’s spiritual heritage. 109969

The King of The Dark Chamber
Niyogi Books; New Delhi, India; 8192091295; Softcover; New;
King of the Dark Chamber (Raja), with an Introduction by Nirmal Kanti Bhattacharjee and translated by the author—playwright, poet, painter and Nobel Laureate, Rabindranath Tagore—is one of his most iconic plays. An allegory of an individual’s spiritual and personal awakening in their quest for truth and beauty, the King of the title is invisible to his subjects, some of whom question his existence, while others are so loyal and worshipful to him that they do not even request to see him. Among many of the play’s central themes, the relationship between Sudarshana, the Queen and the King is symbolic for the relationship between man and the Divine; a romantic relationship between two equally powerful individuals. The notion of redemption is pivotal to this theme: Who is redeemed? The King or the humbled Queen? Or both?Printed Pages: 164. 106587

Yash Chopra: Fifty Years in Indian Cinema
Lotus/Roli Books; New Delhi, India; 8174362347; Hardcover; New; New;
Yash Chopra: Fifty Years in Indian Cinema looks at one of the most charismatic and powerful figures within the Indian film industry - his name being synonymous with romantic glamour and a certain style within Indian culture. From his directorial debut in 1959 with Dhool ka Phool, the book spans his four decades as a director, describing some memorable classics, including Deewar and Kabhi Kabhie. It journeys with him to his advent as producer in 1973, enumerating his enormous box-office hits during the nineties, including Dilwale Dulhania le Jayenge. It encompasses the other genres he successfully delved into with films such as Darr and Mashaal. The author examines how Chopra has transformed the look of popular Indian cinema through tireless innovation within a mainstream tradition; his professional relationship with megastar Amitabh Bachchan; the influence of others, particularly Raj Kapoor, on his cinema; and his legacy as being developed by his son, Aditya Chopra. These analyses are complemented with insights and comments on the man and his oeuvre, through interviews with his family, his colleagues, his stars, his contemporaries and his critics. Encountering Kali: In the Margins, at the Center in the West
Motilal Banarsidass Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2004; 812082041X; Softcover; New;
Encountering Kali explores one of the most ramarkable divinities the world has seen. The Hindu goddess Kali is simultaneously understood as a blood thirsty warrior a deity of ritual possession a tantric sexual partner and an all loving compassionate mothe. Popular and scholarly interest in her has been on the rise in the west in recent years. Responding to this phenomenon McDermott and Kripal`s volume focuses on the complexities involved in interpreting Kali in both her indigenous south Asian settings and her more recent Western incarnation. Through the shifting lenses of scriptural history temple architecture political reflection and the goddess`s recent guises on the Internet the contributors pose questions that illuminate our understanding of Kali while addressing the problems and promises inherent in every act of cross cultural interpretation.Printed Pages: 102057

Marketing Reproduction: Political Rhetoric and Gender Policy in India
Zubaan; New Delhi, India; 8189013025; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New;
The Reproductive and Child Health Policy (RCH) in India has been in force since 1995. Coming after the Cairo Conference, 1994, the RCH was expected to usher in a 'paradigm shift' in India's population policy. From a family welfare programme that has historically been top-down, even coercive, the Indian government projected the RCH to be a participatory, women-centred reproductive health service. Ironically, the policy was devised barely four years after the start of the Indian State's tryst with market development, and was launched into a political environment in ideological transition. This book provides a political analysis of the RCH policy, tracking how neo-liberal and purportedly, women-centred reproductive health discourses are positioned against each other. Making Peace with Partition
Penguin; New Delhi, India; 2005; 0143033492; First Edition; Flexiback; New; 13 Cms x 20 Cms
The Partition of the Indian subcontinent in 1947 left a legacy of hostility and bitterness that has bedevilled relations between India and Pakistan for over fifty-five years. The two countries, both nuclear powers now, have fought three wars since Independence and have twice come to the brink of war in recent years. Each of their attempts to make peace has failed, and each failure has added a new layer of anger and mistrust to existing animosities. So what will it take for India and Pakistan to put the long shadows of Partition behind them, once and for all? Reviewing the turbulent history of their past relationship, Radha Kumar analyses the chief obstacles the two countries face and looks afresh, in particular, at the Kashmir conflict, in the light of the new opportunities and challenges that the twenty-first century presents. Kumar’s comparisons with partition-related peace processes in Bosnia, Ireland, Cyprus and Israel-Palestine offer a radically different perspective on the prospects for peace between India and Pakistan, and illuminate the key elements that go into a successful peace process. Lucid, incisive and optimistic, Radha Kumar’s essay, written at a time when a new peace process between India and Pakistan has begun to unfold, challenges received wisdom as it argues persuasively that the South Asian neighbours are today better placed to make peace than ever before. Negotiating Peace in Deeply Divided Societies: A Set of Simulations
Sage Publications; New Delhi, India; 2009; 8178298821; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New;
This first-of-its-kind book approaches peacemaking in a unique way. It makes an innovative application of simulation—as training exercises for peacemaking—and puts readers in the role of key actors during conflict and conflict resolution processes, giving them a nuanced understanding of the risk, opportunity and cost of making peace. These simulations are also aimed at helping would-be negotiators and/or mediators prepare better. The six exercises included in the book are mostly based on actual or potential negotiations in ongoing peace processes. They cover the following aspects of negotiating peace in deeply divided societies: preventing escalation of the conflict (also called conflict management), initiating Confidence Building Measures (CBMs) that pave the way for political resolution, addressing the root causes of conflict, arriving at a comprehensive agreement to end the conflict and post-conflict peace-building. As a set of exercises, the six simulations in this book will be useful for administrators, negotiators and peacekeeping forces. This book will also be an important source of information for students and academics studying Politics, International Relations and Peace Studies. Printed Pages: 424. 028352
