India’s National Security: Annual Review 2007
KW Publishers; New Delhi, India; 2007; 8187966734; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New;
India is moving ahead in improving its relations with the major and middle powers and availing of the opportunities being offered by strategic partnerships and economic cooperation agreements with such powers. India's relations with the United States have acquired special importance as the United States opens up to India for transfer of high technology, including that in the defence and nuclear fields, in the hope that India will be a valuable partner in maintaining international stability and countering global terrorism. However, the great debate in India pertaining to the Indo-US nuclear deal of 2005 persists with the objective of preserving India's strategic autonomy while accessing the benefits of a stronger relationship with the United States.The relationship with Russia continues to be strengthened, particularly in the field of defence cooperation. However, relations with China, despite improvement in trade, hang in the balance until the border dispute is resolved. There is still mistrust between the two countries which stands in the way of concretizing their strategic partnership. Pakistan remains a source of threat even though atmospherics have become more positive. Militancy and terrorism in J&K and other parts of India originating from Pakistan cast a dark shadow over Indo-Pak relations, with no end in sight.While such a mix of hope and despair constitutes the external security environment of India, there is nothing but despair as regards the internal security situation. These and various other aspects of India's national security, including the threats and challenges that face the country in the years ahead, have been discussed in great detail in this seventh volume of India's National Security Annual Review.Printed Pages: 674. 104448

Traditions in Motion: Religion and Society in History
Oxford University Press; New Delhi, India; 2005; 0195669150; First Edition; Hard Cover; New; New; 14 Cms x 22 Cms
This collection of original essays engages with the historical dynamics of traditions and their ways of surviving and adapting. Part of a critical and conscious task of representing and analysing tradition, these essays unravel the theoretical dimensions of the term. In doing so they also examine musical, literary, architectural, political, and historical traditions that have been crucial to South Asia. In a comprehensive introduction, the editors draw out the implications that representation and analysis of traditions have for the humanities. They demonstrate that traditions are continuously renewing themselves and can be carriers of political and cultural meaning while deriving sustenance from available social practices. The editors also point to the function of institutions -- religious, social and political -- in maintaining, negotiating, and re-creating traditions. With this analysis, Saberwal and Varma prepare the framework for the essays -- covering a wide range of themes tha t ultimately have a bearing on contemporary reality. Beginning with the challenge of locating social reality in the architectural remains of a tradition, and demonstrating that all traditions have breaks and disjunctures, these essays traverse the spectrum to assess older textual traditions for voices of authority. Varying representations of the Ramayana -- including those recently televised -- as well as oral traditions in Islam reveal the workings of cultural practices over time. This collection also covers important aspects of the evolution of religious traditions within the context of syncretic practices as well as cultural boundaries, and gender and caste divisions. The later contributions demonstrate the continuities between religious tradition, caste mobility, and political legitimacy. This collection is significant for contributions from eminent scholars as also for the insider's view through voices across disciplines. This volume will be of great interest to students and scholars of history and sociology as well as those interested in living institutions and cultural and political practices. Understanding Japjee Sahib: The Essence of Guru Granth Sahib
KW Publishers; New Delhi, India; 2014; 9789383649013; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New;
It is said that if you want to understand the whole of Guru Granth Sahib, you can do so by understanding Japjee alone because Guru Nanaks message was complete in Japjee itself. The rest of the Guru Granth Sahib is an interpretation, elaboration and explanation of Japjee Sahib. Japjee, the first composition of Guru Nanak, contains the most valuable and authentic expression of the divine experience he had when he went missing for three days. Japjee was his first utterance when he returned after his encounter with the divine. Japjee contains the gist of his entire journey through which he was transformed from a seeker to the enlightened master. It is a roadmap for those who wish to walk this path. Understanding Japjee Sahib is an attempt to capture the essence of Guru Granth Sahib. The original script is presented in three languages to cater to the readers who do not know the Gurmukhi script. The translation is given in the poetic form to highlight the meaning rather than present a word-for-word translation. In addition, it is an attempt to dive deep into some very profound concepts to make it easy for the readers to grasp them and imbibe them in their day-to-day life.Printed Pages: 148. 104280

Understanding Guru Granth Sahib: The Living Guru
KW Publishers; New Delhi, India; 2010; 9789380502342; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New;
Guru Granth Sahib, the holy book of the Sikhs, is considered the living guru. When the tenth master, Guru Gobind Singh declared that after him there will be no human guru, he instructed his followers to seek guidance from the eleventh and eternal guru, the Guru Granth Sahib. Guru Granth Sahib is unique in more ways than one. First of all, the entire voluminous scripture of 1430 pages is composed in poetry and can be sung with full-throated ease. Almost all of it has been set to music based on 31 ragas. It contains verses composed not only by the Gurus but also by Hindu and Muslim bhagats. Understanding Guru Granth Sahib by Satjit Wadva is a beginner's guide to approach and understand Guru Granth Sahib. It gives a glimpse of what it contains and outlines the context of how it came to be revered as the living guru. While it summarises the essence of the Guru Granth Sahib in simple and easy-to-understand language, it highlights the beauty of the poetic diction, the economy of words, the depth of thought and its rendition in the prescribed ragas— all this to awaken a thirst in the seekers' hearts so that they approach their guru directly without depending on interpreters or intermediaries.Printed Pages: 204. 104401

Understanding The Spiritual Dialogue: Siddha Goshti
KW Publishers; New Delhi, India; 2015; 9789383649587; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New;
The Siddha Goshti is Guru Nanak’s dialogues with some sages. These sages had renounced the world and were living in caves in the Himalayas. They were yogis who believed in practising physical and mental exercises for the attainment of spiritual powers (siddhis), which would ultimately lead to moksha (liberation). These dialogues are a summary of Guru Nanak’s views on life in general and spirituality in particular.While these ascetics asserted that one must withdraw from society and family to attain detachment, Guru Nanak said that attachment and detachment were a state of mind. You don’t have to give up anything; you can achieve detachment right in the middle of the marketplace. In fact, true detachment is that which can remain unruffled even in the thick of temptations. The ascetics live away from society but are dependent on the men and women of the world for their survival. Guru Nanak said that all human beings must perform their duties and fulfill their responsibilities so as not to be a burden on society.Printed Pages: 134. 105035

Three Basics of Sikh Religious Thought: Faith, Grace and Prayer (Second Edition)
Pragati Publications; New Delhi, India; 2004; 817307044X; Second Edition; Hardcover; New; New;
In all probability, this is the first ever-critical study of faith, grace and prayer in Sikh religious thought from the viewpoint of present day philosophy.Dr. Satnam Kaur all along avails of the two major approaches in philosophy today, namely, those of Phenomenology and linguistic analysis. Thus, care has been taken to unravel the fabric of the (Sikh gurus') living experience of faith, grace and prayer-with minimal damage to its intricate singleness; and, at many a place, meticulous attention to the literal and suggested meanings of Gurbani has enabled the authoress to improve upon the current translations of the Adi Granth.Printed Pages: 342. 101215

Guru Nanak's Japuji: A Look Anew
D.K. Printworld (P) Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2013; 812460701X; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New; 15 x 23 Cm
The ultimate reality, God or Brahman, may well be said to outstrip the reach of thought; but if we do not try, as thoughtfully as we possibly can, to get at what Guru Nanak really says in this seminal work Japuji — a daily prayer book — how will we be able to benefit from his teaching, as he surely wanted fervently? In the entire history of mankind very few men have been so acutely sensitive to our multifarious suffering, and so keen to show us the way to transcend it for good, as Guru Nanak was. This makes the authors approach this holy work in a new perspective. This volume tries to interpret Mul Mantra in such a way that the celestial attributes listed in it come to be interrelated, as they must be taken to be. It also attempts wherever possible to explain the order of Guru's prolific utterances, be they invocatory or just eulogistic. However ebullient the Guru's utterances may seem to be, they are always significant vehicles of some profound meaning; and also warranted by the running context. Guru Nanak's Japuji is a great work, yet this volume is expected to do some good to every thoughtful reader. At the end, the entire text of Japuji in Punjabi, Devnagari with Roman transliteration is given, making the text accessible to the masses who live outside India and need this prayer to be read in English.Printed Pages: 147. 100399

Chandragomin's Twenty Verses on the Bodhisattva Vow
Paljor Publications/Library of Tibetan Works & Archives; New Delhi, India; 1997; 8186470115; Softcover; New;
Candragomin's Twenty Verses on the Bodhisattva Vow is short, clear and simple. Acharya Candragomin himself was a great Indian lay practitioner (upasaka) of the 7th century, famous for his extensive learning and practice. The commentary to the Twenty Verses was also by a learned Tibetan lay practitioner of the Sakya School of Tibetan Buddhism. He was Sakya Dragpa Gyaltsen ("1147-1216), the third son of Jetsun Kunga Nyingpo, and is believed to have been a direct disciple of Manjushri for seven lifetimes.Famous for his mastery of both sutra and Tantra traditions, Dragpa Gyaltsen's commentary to the Twenty Verses on the Bodkisattva Vow is lucid and very popular within the Sakya School of Tibetan Buddhism. It covers not only a discussion of the basic vow, but also explains the arrangement of the ceremony and provides guidelines for taking the vow. Both the root text and its commentary have been able translated by Dr. Mark Tatz according to an oral commentary given by Khenpo A-pad of the Sakya College.Printed Pages: 80. 103545

Apad - Dharma in the Mahabharata: How to Face Calamities at Personal, State, and Global Levels (When people's Lives Everywhere are Endangered by too much Violence, how can you say, "This is not my problem"? - Mahabharata 12.175.7)
Motilal Banarsidass Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2010; 8178223619; First Edition; Softcover; New;
The literal meaning of the Sanskrit word "Apaddharma" is "dharma appropriate at the time of calamity". The Mahabharata's use of this expression implies that, in the opinion of the author of this epic, the traditional varnashramadharma would not prove to be strong enough to protect the society, if and when there is a calamity. Therefore, Vedic scholars ought to have welcomed the messages of Apad-dharma when the society was actually attacked by external forces during the premodern period. The historical background of the present study poses an important, academic question: "How could the Indian society have protected itself against external attacks during the pre-modern period?" Research-based answers to such Indiarelated questions occupy the initial part of this book to which a global dimension has been added by digging deep into Mahabharata's innumerable stories. Results of innovative investiga-tions into the general question "How to face calamities at personal, state and global levels", are presented here in terms of a modern, scientific framework, and expressed in a non-denominational.Printed Pages: 220. 102043

The Social Message of Mahayana Buddhism (Bodhicaryavatara 4.40 Why Shall I not Persevere, Whole-Heartedly, in Working for the Good of the World, Undeterred by Difficulties?)
Motilal Banarsidass Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2012; 8178223848; First Edition; Softcover; New;
The conceptual origin of this book is linked with the study and research that the authors did in USA from 1953 onward in association with Alan Watts who laid open vast field of research opportunities connected with Buddhism.The research on 'Lokasamgraha' (Good of the world) - which has similarities with Sarvodaya - picked up steam in 1987. Their first book on Lokasamgraha was published in 1993, under the title The Social Role of the Gita: How and Why. The main finding of that book, viz. that the social message of 'Bhagavad-Gita', was 'Lokasamgraha', which received strong support from Gandhian scholars as well as university professors. This prompted them to extend the coverage of research to books which have been influenced by Bhagavad-Gita.While looking for other texts that could be included in the research program, the authors came across Dr. Radhakrishnan's remark (made in 1948) that the most important Mahayana text (The Lotus Sutra) is indebted to Bhagavad-Gita. In fact, quite independently of this remark, their research inevitably meant taking a close look at the important phenomenon of 'Engaged Buddhism'. In this process, they discovered that, while many of the engaged Buddhists had been inspired by the Lotus Sutra, some of them had been inspired by Shantideva's Bodhicaryavatara. The outcome of the consequent enlargement of the scope of the research is presented in this book.Printed Pages: 190. 102409

Practical Vedanta Movement: Prasthanatraya widened to "Panch-Shastra"
Motilal Banarsidass Publishers Private Limited/Research India Press; New Delhi, India; 2016; 8178224771; Softcover; New;
While performing the last rites of his mother (in the face of opposition from other Vedantins), Shankaracharya must have realized that some of the Vedantic messages were not ìpracticalî. In 1823, Rammohun Roy was deeply hurt to see Vedantic scholars promoting ìescapismî. In 1896, Swami Vivekananda gave talks on his vision of Practical Vedanta, to fulfil which he established, in 1897, Ramakrishna Mission as a non-political organization. The scope of Practical Vedanta was widened in the 20th century, by the contributions of TilakAurobindo-Tagore-Gandhi. The whole world admired this great Vedantic movement. In the beginning of the 21st century, Western scholars and activists (drawing inspiration from Vedanta and other philosophies) have taken the lead in further updating of Vedanta, by attaching high priority to the welfare of non-human beings. This pioneering book studies, not only these five contributions, but also three later ones, the most recent being the campaign for ìLiving Vedantaî (presented by Will Tuttle in his own words). Finally, specific suggestions are put forward to answer the question: What does Practical Vedanta mean today? 110015

The Social Role of the Gita: How and Why
Motilal Banarsidass Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 1998; 8120815246; First Edition; Softcover; New;
Although the Bhagavad-gita has traditionally been regarded as a poem of primarily religious significance, Dr. Agarwal shows that with the proper interpretation its message may be ransformed into a set of practical ethical guidelines. This practical aspect of the Gita’s teaching, its insistence that involvement with the world is an ethically correct function of human behaviour, is the focus of this book. That involvement with the world’s is expressed by the term 'Lokasamgraha'. The term covers a multitude of social and political forms of behaviour and attitudes of mind and is perhaps more central to the meaning the Gita should have for modern man than its traditional other-worldly interpretation.Printed Pages: 488. 102217

Vedic Vision of Consciousness and Reality (History of Science, Philosophy and Culture in Indian Perspective: Volume XII, Part 3)
Munshiram Manoharlal Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2004; 8187586184; First Edition; Hard Cover; New; New; 23 Cms x 29 Cms
The volumes of the PROJECT ON THE HISTORY OF SCIENCE, PHILOSOPHY AND CULTURE IN INDIAN CIVILIZATION aim at discovering the main aspects of India's heritage and present them in an interrelated way. These volumes, in spite of their unitary look, recognise the difference between the areas of material civilization and those of ideational culture. The Project is not being executed by a single group of thinkers and writers whore are methodologically uniform or ideologically identical in their commitments. In fact contributions are made by different scholars with different ideological persuasions and methodological approaches. The Project is marked by what may be called 'methodological pluralism'. In spite of its primary historical character, this Project, both in its conceptualization and execution, has been shaped by many scholars drawn from different disciplines. It is for the first time that an endeavour of such a unique and comprehensive character has been undertaken to study critically a major world civilization like India.Vedic Vision of Consciousness and Reality is an attempt at a systematic presentation of the visions of Vedic seers concerning consciousness in relationship to reality. The relevance of this attempt has got enhanced today due to latest discoveries in quantum physics tending to accord some sort of substantiality to consciousness. This is the position Vedic seers held long ago as is evident from the Vedanta. The Vedanta, however, has ignored the Vedic Samhitas on metaphysical issues including consciousness. The present work has come in fulfillment of this lacuna in the tradition of Vedic thought. It has been shown here strictly on the basis of textual evidence how the Vedic seers were involved in the search for consciousness in its purest form coinciding with Reality. The coincidence of the modern science in its latest developments with the Vedic viewpoint in this regard, suggests the necessity of a paradigmatic shift in the human thinking at this juncture from matter to consciousness as the most fundamental reality. These issues have been discussed here from various viewpoints including scientific, philosophical, psychological, theological and epistemological. Printed Pages: 530. 006977

Meaning and Language
D.K. Printworld (P) Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2016; 8124608547; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New; 15 x 23 Cm
Preface. 1. Two conceptions of meaning. 2. Frege and atomistic theory of meaning. 3. Early Wittgenstein and atomistic theory of meaning. 4. Logical positivistism and atomistic theory of meaning. 5. The untenability of atomistic theory of meaning. 6. Quine and meaning holism. 7. Davidson and meaning holism. 8. Later Wittgenstein and meaning holism. 9. Conclusion: towards an idea of a moderate meaning holism. Bibliography. Index.This volume explores the nature of meaning and the way it functions in language. Philosophers such as Aristotle, Thomas Acquinas, John Locke, Immanuel Kant and David Hume had keen interest in the study of meaning, though it was not central to their philosophical inquiry. But the contemporary philosophy takes a radical twist towards language which is characterized as linguistic turn in philosophy. Meaning and its correct characterization are the foremost concerns of contemporary philosophy.Study of two semantic perspectives - meaning atomism and meaning holism - is the core content of this book and it mainly focuses on contrasting these two perspectives or models of meaning and evaluates them with a view to arrive at an explicit conception of meaning that will correctly reveal the semantics of natural language.In doing so, it vividly discusses the two perspectives of meaning along with the atomistic theory of Gottlob Frege, Wittgenstein’s approach to meaning, logical positivists’ conception of meaning, why meaning atomism fails to capture the uniqueness of meaning, Quinian theory of meaning holism, Davidson’s approach to meaning holism, and Later Wittgenstein’s view on meaning holism, thus covering a wide gamut of the topic. The Ramayana: A Linguistic Study
Munshiram Manoharlal Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 1964; 8121504112; First Edition; Hardbound; New; New; 14 Cms x 22 Cms
The Ramayana is always a fascinating study. This Adi Kavya coming from the pen of one of India's greatest poets has exercised a very powerful influence on the life and thought of millions of people of India over the ages. A voluminous work like the Ramayana can certainly be expected to be a good repertory of all kinds of information, historical, social, religious and cultural. So can it be a good index of the language as it obtained in contemporary society. The present study is the first attempt of its kind analysing and critically evaluating the language of the Ramayana in all its varied aspects and, therefore, fulfils a long-felt desideratum. The twenty-four thousand verses of this great epic of India have been given here the most searching treatment and fresh ground broken in more ways than one. The study of the Ramayana synonyms, phonetic tendencies, onomatopoeia, prepositional verbs, usage, etymologies and un-Paninian forms, to mention only a few of the many topics dealt with exhaustively here, is bound to interest students of Sanskrit language in general and Linguistics in particular. The treatment of the subject is scientific throughout. The work is well-documented. Printed Pages: 314. 000427

The Age of Stagnation: Why Perpetual Growth is Unattainable and the Global Economy is in Peril
Westland Limited; New Delhi, India; 9789385724268; Softcover; New;
Essential reading for anyone interested in the future of the global economy and their own prospects, The Age of Stagnation incisively explains the problems confronting us, how we’re making those problems worse, and what the real solutions are. For ordinary individuals, the goal of a steady job, a home of one’s own, a comfortable retirement and a good life for our children is receding. In this brilliantly clear-eyed account, Satyajit Das links past, present and future to show that it’s not just unrealistic expectations, but the poor performance of those governing us that are to blame. The strategies and policies deployed to promote economic growth after the Great Recession have failed, not least because such growth cannot continue indefinitely. The solution – structural change – is electorally unpopular and therefore ignored. The Age of Stagnation explains why the ultimate adjustment, whetherstretched out over time or in the form of another sudden crash, will be life-changing.An internationally respected commentator on financial markets, credited with predicting the Global Financial crisis and featured in the 2010 Oscar-winning documentary Inside Job, Satyajit Das is our finest writer about money and the global economy. Informed, impassioned, lively and witty, The Age of Stagnation is the only book you need to understand what the future will bring. 109750

Speaking of Film
Penguin; New Delhi, India; 2005; 0144000261; First Edition; Paperback; New; 13 x 20 Cm
Exactly fifty years ago, in 1955, the release of Pather Panchali heralded the arrival of a master in the world of cinema. Over the next forty years, Satyajit Ray came to be regarded as one of the world’s finest film-makers ever. Today, more than a decade after his death, he continues to be India’s most respected name in international film circles. Apart from his achievements as a director, Ray was also a prolific writer of novels, short stories, and essays on cinema. Speaking of Films brings together some of Ray’s most memorable writings on film and film-making. With the masterly precision and clarity that characterize his films, Ray discusses a wide array of subjects: the structure and language of cinema with special reference to his adaptations of Tagore and Bibhuti Bhushan Bandopadhyay, the appropriate use of background music and dialogue in films, the relationship between a film-maker and a film critic, and important developments in cinema like the advent of sound and colour. He also writes about his own experiences, the challenges of working with rank amateurs, and the innovations called for when making a film in the face of technological, financial and logistical constraints. In the process, Ray provides fascinating behind-the-scenes glimpses of the people who worked with him—the intricacies of getting Chhabi Biswas, who had no ear for music, to play a patron of classical music in Jalsaghar; the incredible memory of the seventy-five-year-old Chunibala Devi, Indir Thakrun of Pather Panchali, and her remarkable attention to details. This first-ever translation of Bishay Chalachitra, a seminal collection of essays on cinema, Speaking of Films retains the lucidity and simplicity that is a hallmark of Ray’s writing, and gives an invaluable insight into the mind of a genius. Companion to North Indian Classical Music
Munshiram Manoharlal Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2013; 8121510902; Second Revised and Enlarged Edition; Hardcover; New; New; 16 x 24 Cm
With growing interest in North Indian classical music, both in India and abroad, and inspite of several books on specific topics which have appeared in recent times, there was a need for a comprehensive reference book in English which would give adequate and precise information on various aspects of North Indian or Hindustani classical music at one place. For general readers, students, and practising musicians, the Companion to North Indian Classical Music has served to fill this gap. With more than 1200 entries, this book gives, in an intelligible and straightforward manner, information about various ragas of Hindustani classical music and their scales and performance times, tals used, their structure and ethos, nomenclature and terms in currency; historical background and development of forms, and various genres and gharanas: biographical notes about outstanding artists and performers, both vocalists and instrumentalists of the twentieth century along with performers ascending with the twenty-first century. It also includes musicologists of note, and information about various musical instruments and their evolution. Some notations used in this book have been revised. The Appendices include a comprehensive list of ragas and their scales, etc. and the Discography (App. D) gives details of cassettes and CDs to facilitate listening to good music, and performances by maestros. Besides correcting some errors and providing for omissions, this second revised edition of the Companion includes new material. Printed Pages: 542. 037325

Energy Opportunities and Social Responsibility
Jaico Publishing House; Delhi, India; 8184950004; Softcover; New;
Energy is an indispensable resource that is required to run the economy and sustain the well being of people. The rapidly developing economies of Third World countries like China and India need to generate increasing amounts of energy as they grow. However, the situation has become complicated after discovery of the functional linkages between CO2 emission from fossil fuels like coal and petroleum. Hence, there is a global search for carbon free energy technology.Generation of energy is both a technological issue as well as a social commitment. The author has addressed these issues covering all major methods of energy generation. He believes that without social support, the technologists cannot derive effective gains from their discoveries. While dealing with each type of technology for generation, the reciprocity between theory and social response has been maintained throughout the book.Key Features Primary focus is on India and China, their research for increasing amounts of energy resources to meet the domestic demands Presents detailed discussion both on the conventional non-renewable sources, as well as on renewable sources of energy.Printed Pages: 388. 105592

Three Sides of Life: Short Stories from Bengali Women Sisters
Oxford University Press; New Delhi, India; 2007; 0195685857; First Edition; Hard Cover; New; New;
This selection of fifteen stories by five exceptional Bengali women writers looks at the lives of women who are neither stars nor martyrs in the feminist cause. They are voices, individual and particular, of women leading their everyday lives, nursing their joys and sorrows. These women write out of their bodies and the intimate spaces around them; they write the history and mathematics of their lives; they compose a deeper reality; they give us an atmosphere, a sky, and a house with many doorways helping us to reclaim their original energy and wonderful clarity. The manushi created by the woman writer speaks in several voices and addresses issues, emotional and psychological, that affect their lives and control their decisions: from the low-caste woman of Mahasweta Devi's story to the teenage immigrant in America of Nabaneeta Dev Sen's, from the girl child battling humiliation in Bani Basu's to the victim of marital exploitation in Ashapurna Devi's, and the women of the old-age home in Suchitra Bhattacharya's tale. These women form a small strong chorus, which testifies that women's writing is more than a literary act it is imagining a world into being. It is through the battles that they must fight daily that the women explore their emotional, social, and economic selfhood. The stories, at once linear and circular, offer fewer closures than the work of male writers, and carry with them the echoes of loss. 019709

Becoming Hindus and Muslims: Reading the Cultural Encounter in Bengal: 1342-1905
Munshiram Manoharlal Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2015; 8121512905; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New; 15 x 23 Cm
This book begins by interrogating the assumption that coherent religious identities emerged in the Indian subcontinent only in the nineteenth century, when the colonial state initiated the census and made it necessary for Indians determinately to identify themselves as Hindus or Muslims. The author studies the medieval Bengali kavyas and discerns the beginnings of religious identities in them. The kavyas, thus, he argues, formed an emotional inheritance which impacted the literature and sense of history which emerged in colonial Bengal under European influence. In the second-half of the nineteenth century, this new literature, teamed with a freshly acquired historical consciousness, demonstrated the various ways in which the contemporary Hindu and Muslim intelligentsia tried to make sense of each other. In the process, the literature of the period, the book suggests, both reflected and aided the gradual ‘becoming’ of Hindus and Muslims as political communities. Printed Pages: 313. 038553

Daughter of a Drunkard Monk
Omji Publishing House Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2015; 9789384028138; First Edition; Softcover; New;
"Daughter of a Drunkard Monk" is Saumya Kaushiksdebut novel, being a hard-core feminist the writer has penned down the adversities faced by women in a male patriarchal society The book picks out those issues which prevail in the society and are forgotten down in the papers and news. "DODM" is the story of the protagonist which can be any ordinary girl in similar situation. What, however, appears extraordinary is the grit and courage and confidence with which the protagonist faces all verities of adversities, many of which are simply reflections of her 'gender' and the societal/ patriarchal attitude towards girls in 'such/ similar' situations. 107043

Stitches on Time: Colonial Textures and Postcolonial Tangles
Oxford University Press; New Delhi, India; 2004; 0195668375; First Indian Edition; Hard Cover; New; New; 16.5 Cms x 25 Cms
"Modernity has defined itself against enchantment, yet continually produced new enchantments. Saurabh Dube helpfully establishes this pattern, and especially sheds light on the ways in which colonial and postcolonial power relationships are interwoven with spriritual meanings. He rightly and persuasively brings such apparently marginal actors as evangelical missionaries and native Indian Christians onto center stage, and he does so with grace, lucidity, and insight." -- Craid Calhoun, President, Social Science Research Council "Saurabh Dube's book will make a signal contribution to the political and theoretical legacy of South Asian subaltern studies. Based at he Colegio de Mexico and in conversation with scholars and intellectuals based in Latin America, Dube's book will enhance the dialogue between Latin American critical social thought and subaltern studies already underway. Historically grounded and theoretically sophisticated, Stitches on Time conveys the felling of a new gaze in the tradition of subaltern studies, an awareness of a daily life out of place in relation to the subject of scholarly pursuit." -- Walter D. Mignolo, Duke University Destined to become a key work of subaltern studies and a crucial intervention in postcolonial scholarship, Stitches on Time probes the relationships between empire and modernity, nation and history, the colonial and the postcolonial, and power and difference. Saurabh Dube combines history and anthropology to provide critical understandings of the theory and practice of historical ethnography and contemporary historiography. Drawing on extensive archival research and innovative fieldwork as well as political economy and social theory--including considerations of gender--he unpacks the implications of specific Indian pasts from the middle of the nineteenth century through the end of the twentieth century. Dube provides incisive accounts of the interactions between North American evangelical missio naries and Christian converts of central India, and between colonial legal systems and the Indian popular laws. He reflects on the difficulties of history writing by considering the production and reception of recent Hindu nationalist histories. Assessing the work of the South Asian Subaltern Studies Collective, he offers substantial critical readings of major writings by Ranajit Guha, Dipesh Chakrabarty, Partha Chatterjee, and others. Dube develops the concept and practice of a "history without warranty" as a means of rigorously rethinking categories such as modernity, colonialism, the West, the postcolonial, and the nation.
