This is the first of seven volumes that will present a complete and fully annotated translation of the Valmiki Ramayana. The Ramayana of Valmiki: An Epic of Ancient India: Vol. VI: Yuddhakanda
Princeton University Press; Princeton, New Jersey, USA; 2009; 0691066639; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New; 15 x 23 Cm
The sixth book of the Ramayana of Valmiki, the Yuddhakanda, recounts the final dramatic war between the forces of good led by the exiled prince Rama, and the forces of evil commanded by the arch demon Ravana. The hero Rama's primary purpose in the battle is to rescue the abducted princess Sita and destroy the demon king. However, the confrontation also marks the turning point for the divine mission of the Ramavatara, the incarnation of Lord Visnu as a human prince, who will restore righteousness to a world on the brink of chaos. The book ends with the gods' revelation to Rama of his true divine nature, his emotional reunion with his beloved wife, his long-delayed consecration as king of Kosala, and his restoration of a utopian age. The Yuddhakanda contains some of the most extraordinary events and larger-than-life characters to be found anywhere in world literature. This sixth volume in the critical edition and translation of the Valmiki Ramayana includes an extensive introduction, exhaustive notes, and a comprehensive bibliography. Printed Pages: 1632. 030646

Command Failure in War: Psychology and Leadership
KW Publishers; New Delhi, India; 2011; 9789380502786; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New;
Why do Military Commanders, most of them usually quite capable, fail at crucial moments of their careers? Robert Pois and Philip Langer—one a historian, the other an educational psychologist—study seven cases of military command failures, from Frederick the Great at Kunersdorf to Hitler’s invasion of Russia. While Pois and Langer recognize the value of psychological theorizing, they do not believe that one method can cover all the individuals, battles, or campaigns under examination. Instead, they judiciously apply a number of psycho-historical approaches in hope of shedding light on the behaviors of commanders of commanders during war. Rather than adhering to theoretical uniformity, the most parsimonious explanations drive their applications of psychological theory. Their goal is to provide plausible explanations for the failures of command discussed within. The other battles and commanders studies here are Napoleon in Russia, George B. McClellan’s Peninsular campaign, Robert E. Lee and Pickett’s Charge at Gettysburg, John Bell Hood at the Battle of Franklin, Douglas Haig and the British command during World War I, “Bomber” Harris and the strategic bombing of Germany, and Stalingrad.Printed Pages: 302. 104369

Beyond Religion: Meditations on Our True Nature
Motilal Banarsidass Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2002; 817822139X; First Edition; Softcover; New;
What are "meditations"? Numerous meditations are possible and helpful, but there is only one of supreme importance; it is the meditation on the theme "Who am I?" This leads eventually to the recognition that one is the Unicity, the Totality or the Consciousness Itself, beyond all limitations and divisions.It essentially consists in eternal watchfulness, the witnessing of the consciousness everlastingly falling back into seeing events as variations on the theme of body-mind identification.Printed Pages: 224. 102223

Islamic Sufism Unbound: Politics and Piety in Twenty-First Century Pakistan
Palgrave Macmillan; Delhi, India; 0230618960; Softcover; New; 15 x 23 Cm
Against the backdrop of the turbulent social and political landscape of today's Pakistan, Robert Rozehnal traces the ritual practices and identity politics of a contemporary Sufi order: the Chishti Sabiris. He does so from multiple perspectives: from the rich Urdu writings of twentieth century Sufi masters, to the complex spiritual life of contemporary disciples and the order's growing transnational networks. Drawing on new textual and ethnographic research, this multi-dimensional and interdisciplinary study of the Sufi tradition challenges the prevailing models of academic scholarship. Rock and Roll Jihad: A Muslim Rock Star's Revolution
Jaico Publishing House; Delhi, India; 8184951183; Softcover; New;
With 30 million record sales under his belt, and with fans including Bono and Deepak Chopra, Pakistan-born Salman Ahmad, the leader of the band Junoon, is renowned for being the first rock & roll star to destroy the wall that divides the West and the Muslim world. His hits such as Bheegi Yadein, Azadi, and Sayonee made rock history in India. Rock and Roll Jihad is the story of his incredible journey.Facing down angry mullahs and oppressive dictators who wanted all music to be banned from Pakistan, Salman Ahmad rocketed to the top of the music charts, bringing Western-style rock and pop to Pakistani teenagers for the first time. His band became the U2 of Asia, a sufi-rock group that broke boundaries and sold a record number of albums.As his music climbed the charts, Salman found himself the target of religious fanatics and power-mad politicians desperate to take him and his band down. Undeterred, Salman created his own underground jihad: his mission was to bring his beloved rock music to an enthusiastic new audience in South Asia and beyond. In the center of a new generation of young Pakistanis who go to mosques as well as McDonald’s, whose religion gives them compassion for and not fear of the West, and who see modern music as a rainbow bridge that links their lives to the rest of the world, nothing could stop Salman’s star from rising.Printed Pages: 248 with CD. 105431

Changing India (2nd edition)
Cambridge University Press; Cambridge, UK; 2003; 052154081X; Second Edition; Paperback; New;
The revised edition of Robert Stern’s book brings India’s story up to date. Since its original publication in 1993, much has altered and yet central to the author’s argument remains his belief in the remarkable continuity and vitality of India’s social systems and its resilience in the face of change. This is a colourful, readable and comprehensive introduction to modern India. In a journey through its family households and villages, the author explains its long-lived and little understood caste and class systems, its venerable faiths and extraordinary ethnic diversity, its history as ‘the jewel in the crown’ of British imperialism and its post-Independence career as a major agricultural and industrial nation. While paradoxes abound in an India which is constantly transforming, Stern demonstrates how and why it remains the largest and most enduring democracy in the developing world. Contents Introduction: Change, the societies of India and Indian society; Part I . The changing countryside:1. Families and villages; 2. Varna, jati and caste, Muslim quasi castes and untouchability; 3. Class: primordial group representation, stimuli-response and patron-client relationships; 4. Homelands, ‘linguistic,’ ‘tribal’ and ‘regional’ states: nation provinces and bourgeois revolution; Part II. Change from above: 5. British imperialism, Indian nationalism and Muslim separatism; 6. Political and economic development in the Indian Union and its international politics Printed Pages: 268 with 4 tables and 3 maps. 008686

Peter Drucker was widely considered to be the father of modern management. His 39 books and countless scholarly and popular articles explored how humans are organized across all sectors of society-in business, government and the nonprofit world. His writings predicted many of the major developments of the late twentieth century, including privatization and decentralization; the rise of Japan to economic world power; the decisive importance of marketing; and the emergence of the information society with its necessity of lifelong learning. In 1959, Drucker coined the term knowledge worker.Printed Pages: 324. 104905

Chef Roberta has lived in India for seventeen years, working in restaurants in Manali where she quickly became the stuff of legend amongst travellers to the region. Now, in Cooking Italian Food in India, Roberta has put together the recipes that make her restaurant such a success. The book combines a range of appetisers, soups, sauces, main dishes and desserts.
