Headlines from the Heartland: Reinventing the Hindi Public Sphere
Sage Publications; New Delhi, India; 2007; 0761935800; First Edition; Paperback; New;
In the 1990s, a newspaper revolution began blowing across northern and central India. When literacy levels rose, communications expanded, and purchasing power climbed in these Hindi-speaking states, newspapers followed—picking up readers in small towns and villages. Even while these newspapers surged to the top of national readership charts, they localised furiously in the race for readers. But in this universe of local news, questions arose about what localisation was doing to regional identity and consciousness. Using notes from her pioneering field-study in eight states, Sevanti Ninan brilliantly brings alive India’s ongoing Hindi newspaper revolution, and its impact on politics, administration and society. Set against the socio-economic and political changes in the countryside, it is a remarkable story of how journalism flowered in unexpected and unorthodox ways, and colourful media marketing unfurled in the Hindi heartland. The Hoot Reader: Media Practice in Twenty-first Century India
Oxford University Press; New Delhi, India; 2013; 019808918X; Softcover; New;
The Hoot has held a mirror to the way journalists have practiced their craft in India. Known for flagging uncomfortable truths and raising hard-hitting questions, the site examines ways in which Indian media does (or does not) fulfil its mandate of strengthening public debate, and of providing a voice to the powerless and marginalized. The Hoot Reader archives some of the best critiques of journalism written over the past decade on topics ranging from media ethics to questions of objectivity, bias, and the implications of corporate ownership. Highlighting the Indian media`s immense political and ideological influence over our lives, this collection discusses how national issues such as communal violence, elections, terrorism, the judiciary, and corruption are shaped by it. In reporting how the media covers India, it reports on the complexity and promise of India itself. Meticulously ed and thematically organized, this oeuvre of deeply engaging, informative, and analytical pieces will serve as an eye-opener for all those who are curious and anxious about the role and future of media in this country. The Divine Master Life and Teachings of Guru Nanak Dev
Gyan Books Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 1989; 8121202493; Hardcover; New; New;
The influence and teachings of Guru Nanak Dev have swayed the soul of India for centuries. And enriched and ennobled the thoughts and lives of countless generations after him. Born in 1469 at Talwandi he engaged himself in religious devotions, and aspired to produce a religions acceptable to both the Hindus and the Muslims. He traveled with a faithful servant, preaching and composing hymns, through the lenth and breadth of the country and to far away Cylon and Mecca. Those who were motivated and followed him became his Sikhs, a Punjabi word for disciples. The Sikhs of Guru Nanak acquired a separate identity as more joined his movement to purity themselves in thought, word and deed. This biography of the great seer, savant, and social reformer describes his life and his philosophy of life as only a true Sikh like Sardar Sewaram Singh can accomplish. The Iranian Nuclear Crisis: A Memoir
KW Publishers; New Delhi, India; 2013; 9789381904817; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New;
The first detailed Iranian account of the diplomatic struggle between Iran and the international community, The Iranian Nuclear Crisis: A Memoir begins in 2002, when news about Iran’s clandestine uranium enrichment and plutonium production facilities emerged, and takes the reader into Tehran’s deliberations as its leaders wrestle with internal and external adversaries. Seyed Hossein Mousavian, previously the head of the Foreign Relations Committee of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council and spokesman for Tehran’s nuclear negotiating team, provides readers with intimate knowledge of Iran’s interactions with the International Atomic Energy Agency and global powers. Mousavian’s personal story comes alive as he vividly recounts his arrest in 2007 on charges of espionage. is and other dramatic episodes of diplomatic missions tell much about the author and the swirling dynamics of Iranian politics and diplomacy—undercurrents that must be understood now more than ever. As intense debate continues over the direction of Iran’s nuclear program, Mousavian weighs the likely efects of military strikes, covert action, sanctions, and diplomatic engagement, along with their potential to resolve the nuclear crisis.Printed Pages: 612. 104296

Indian Secularism: A Social and Intellectual History, 1890-1950
Permanent Black; New Delhi, India; 2008; 8178242125; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New; 14 Cms x 22 Cms
Secularism has been the subject of much debate. Scholars have argued that recent Hindu nationalism is the symptom of a crisis of Indian secularism and have blamed this on a resurgence of religion or communalism. Shabnum Tejani argues here for a more complex and historically informed understanding. Her book is a history of how the idea of secularism emerged in India. She shows that the study of secularism in India has been circumscribed by the opposition in which it exists with communalism. Scholars have treated these categories as reified wholes. Consequently, analyses of secularism have obscured more than they have revealed. Indian Secularism approaches this question from a wholly new perspective. Beginning in the late nineteenth century and ending with the ratification of the constitution in 1950, it examines the social, political, and intellectual genealogies of secularism and communalism. The book examines how secularism came to be bound up with what it meant to legitimately call oneself ‘Indian’ and shows why this concept’s genealogy is so imbued with the language of religion. It argues that the emergence of the category of secularism in India had less to do with creating an ethics of tolerance than with a formulation of nationalism that provided a counterpoint to challenges posed by Muslim and Untouchable communities. Through a detailed reconstruction of six historical moments, which include the emergence of religious movements and key constitutional debates, Tejani shows that the ideology of secularism that emerged in 1950 had its conceptual preconditions in histories of nationalism, communalism, and British colonial discourses. She also argues that the distinction between religion and caste that has characterized debates on Indian secularism is false. Rather than being distinct from community and caste, nationalism and communalism, liberalism and democracy, Indian secularism was a relational category that emerged at the nexus of all these. This book will interest students of Indian democracy, politics, and history, as well as of political philosophy and the sociology of caste. Printed Pages: 320. 031532

Conquest and Community: The Afterlife of Warrior Saint (Ghazi Miyan)
Orient BlackSwan/Permanent Black; New Delhi, India; 2015; 8125059679; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New; 14 x 22 Cm
Conquest and Community tells the story of the Indo-Turkic warrior saint Ghazi Miyan and his influential cult in the Gangetic plains. A purported nephew of Mahmud of Ghazni, Ghazi Miyan was supposedly martyred in holy war against Hindu kings near Bahraich in modern-day Uttar Pradesh in 1034 CE. Conspicuously absent from contemporary Persian chronicles about his famous uncle, he is, nevertheless, the subject of glowing hagiographies from the seventeenth century onwards, as well as an oral folkloric tradition, which thrives to this day. His cult continues draw pilgrims of varying castes, both Muslim and Hindu, from all over northern India to his shrine in Bahraich. Shahid Amin studies the history and growth of this cult and its manifestations in the tales people tell, the ballads they sing, the shrines they visit and the hagiographies they have written. He also addresses the disquiet and criticism the cult has provoked in both orthodox Hindu and Muslim quarters, for Ghazi Miyan is a complex, sometimes troubling figure, an amalgam of different traditions and tropes that do not always coexist easily. He features in text and folklore both as a pious iconoclast, who smashes Hindu idols and also as a staunch protector of cows and cowherds, a putative brother to Hindu women, and a connoisseur of things Indic from pan to the humble mahua tree.Printed Pages: 348 with b/w illustrations & Tables. 102278

Understanding Physical-Pharmaceutical Industry Interactions: A Concise Guide
Cambridge University Press; New Delhi, India; 2007; 0521688663; First Edition; Paperback; New; 150 x 230 Mm
Physician-pharmaceutical industry interactions continue to generate heated debate in academic and public domains, both in the United States and abroad. Despite this, recent research suggests that physicians and physicians-in-training remain uninformed of the core issues and are ill-prepared to understand pharmaceutical industry promotion. Furthermore, few medical curricula address this issue, despite warnings of the imperative need to address this gap in the education of tomorrow's physicians. There is a vast medical literature on this topic, but no single, concise resource. This book aims to fill that gap by providing a resource that explains the essential elements of this subject. The text makes the reader more aware of the key ethical issues and allows the reader to be a more savvy interpreter of industry promotion, have a heightened awareness of the public and medical legal consequences of some physician-pharmaceutical industry interactions, and be better equipped to handle real-life encounters with industry. • Multiple clinical vignettes are included with the factual text, allowing the reader to see the clinical relevance • Book includes internet resources and copies of actual medical society policies • Includes extensive references Contents 1. Gifts from the pharmaceutical industry to physicians: do they influence prescribing?; 2. Ethical considerations of receiving gifts from the pharmaceutical industry; 3. One on one: an analysis of the physician-pharmaceutical company representative detailing interaction; 4. Medical academia and the pharmaceutical industry; 5. Teaching physicians-in-training about pharmaceutical industry promotion; 6. Continuing medical education: how to separate continuing medical education from pharmaceutical industry promotion; 7. Professional policies on physician-pharmaceutical industry interactions; 8. Preserving professionalism: patients' perceptions of physicians' acceptance of gifts from the pharmaceutical industry; 9. Jashn-e-Khusrau: A Collection
Lustre Press/Roli Books; New Delhi, India; 2012; 8174368752; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New; 11 x 11 Inches
This collection compiles the events of Jashn-e-Khusrau, a festival illuminating the genius of Amir Khusrau, held at Hazrat Nizamuddin Basti and India International Centre, Delhi in March 2010. The festival was organized and produced by Aga Khan Trust for Culture in collaboration with Archaeological Survey of India and India International Centre. It was funded by the Ford Foundation. Jashn-e-Khusrau celebrates the sufiana kalam (mystical poetry of Islam) of Amir Khusrau (1253 – 1325). Rendered in the khanaqah (shrine) of his beloved pir, Hazrat Nizamuddin Auliya (1238 – 1325), the kalam has been kept alive for over 750 years by the qawwali singers in the shrines of the Chistiya silsila. The festival puts together an exclusive assembly of selected khanaqahi qawwal with different dargah affiliations – each with distinctive style and repertoire. In that way it is singularly unique. It includes several other related events such as lectures on the poetry of Amir Khusrau and its contribution to qawwali tradition; a discussion with the qawwal on the development of the qawwali styles and contents; heritage walks in Nizamuddin Basti where Amir Khusrau lies buried next to Hazrat Nizamuddin Auliya; film screenings on sufi music and on Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan – one of the greatest exponent of qawwali of our time; and an exhibition displaying Humayun’s Tomb, Sunder Nursery and Hazrat Nizamuddin Basti area urban renewal initiatives. Jashn-e-Khusrau: A Collection presents three music discs exemplifying the vast repertoire of khanaqah iqawwali and Amir Khusrau’skalam. The book presents, in the first section, three essays with an introduction articulating the history, tradition, and literature of khanaqahiqawwali as attributed to Amir Khusrau. The second section compiles the kalam of the qawwalis included in the discs with transliterations and translations. Printed Pages: 224. 037111

Plant Myths and Traditions in India (Revised and Enlarged Edition)
Munshiram Manoharlal Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2013; 8121510074; Fourth Revised and Enlarged Edition; Hardcover; New; New; 16.5 Cms x 25 Cms
Trees and plants play an important part in the myths and customs of India. Many are considered holy, often for reasons that are lost in the mists of antiquity - they are associated and identified with Gods, planets, months, etc. - certain plants are used as protection against witchcraft and the evil eye - some plants bring luck and are offered in the temples - and others play an important part in other religious rites. These traditions and myths form an important aspect of the Indian’s mental background and Dr. Gupta, has performed a most useful service in bringing together all those are known on these subjects from the older Indian literature to modern research. The author discusses the forty-five most important trees and plants and describes the myths and customs connected with each. Specimens of Indian sculpture illustrating the various myths are reproduced on numerous plates. Vakils, Feffer and Simons Ltd; Mumbai, India; 2002; 8187111194; Twelfth Edition; Paperback; New; New; 23 Cms x 29 Cms
Hinduism is the oldest living religion in the world and is unique in its tolerance of other religions. It offers different spiritual paths to persons of different aptitudes, and places emphasis on individual spiritual experience. Yet, in view of its free thinking and lack of compulsion, educated Hindus of today and Hindus living abroad know very little of their religion. There is, therefore, a great need for a simple but comprehensive book on the subject. Likewise, tourists visiting India are often in search of a concise book which will help them understand the Hindu religion and guide them on their visits to Hindu temples and monuments. Shakunthala Jaggannathan has written this book to explain Hinduism to Indians and to visitors from abroad, so that the urban Indian can comprehend the roots of his civilisation, and the tourist can comprehend the various aspects of Hinduism and relate them to what he sees around him in India.concepts such as Karma, Dharma and reincarnation are explained in a simplified form. Nuclear Pakistan
KW Publishers; New Delhi, India; 2012; 9789381904251; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New;
Pakistan has relied for more than a quarter century on its nuclear weapons to conduct its strategy against India. The militarys grand strategy has rested on maintaining the centrality of the covert war (war through terrorism) strategy. Pakistans acquisition of nuclear weapons has been rationalised as a deterrent to Indian conventional military superiority which, its Foreign Minister had once stated, hangs like the Sword of Damocles over Pakistans head. In turn, this was used as an umbrella under which to pursue a proxy war through terrorism. Nuclear weapons have been perceived as a shield to deter an Indian aggression which possibly could be prompted in response to the provocative (sustained and/or high profile) terrorism being conducted from the Pakistani soil, sponsored by the state actors. Pakistans reliance on nuclear weapons has also grown much more with its growing instability and rising threat of failure of the state.Printed Pages: 250. 104335

Pakistan's Millitary and Its Strategy
KW Publishers; New Delhi, India; 2009; 818796684X; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New;
This book is an attempt to fill a critical void in our knowledge in understanding Pakistan’s military which on one side began to dominate the power structure of the country and at another sought a unique strategy to apply force for ideological and political goals. Most of the scholarship has focused on the former; and literature on the latter aspect is scant. This is understandable since few countries clearly spell out their military strategy. But as the victim of Pakistan’s military strategy in its myriad dimensions of building it and using it for six decades it is incumbent for us to understand its dynamics in the past to identify the pointers for the future.Pakistan army has ruled the country for the major part of six decades directly and indirectly; and this has inevitably led to its military strategy shaping the contours of Pakistan’s strategic culture if not its grand strategy. Its strategy has relied heavily on irregular guerrilla warfare conducted as a covert war (through guerrilla fighters, terrorists and religious extremists etc.) and external support for building military power. And nuclear weapons reinforced the confidence and flexibility of tactics in the operational role of covert war which more often than not has been baked at a selected time by overt military offensive.This comprehensive study of Pakistan’s military and its strategy to pursue ideological and political goals in the future military and foreign policy of Pakistan would be of immense value to the professionals as well as those interested in national defence and military strategy.Printed Pages: 320. 104435

Shahjahanabad: A City of Delhi 1638 1857
Munshiram Manoharlal Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, Indias; 2015; 8121508029; Reprint; Hardcover; New; New; 14 Cms x 22 Cms
Shahjahanabad was inhabited in the seventeenth century as the capital city of the Mughal Empire, in the geographical region of Delhi. This work focuses on the structure of the city, its subsequent growth and the numerous functions if came to assume in a period of two hundred years. This study examines the theoretical formulations applied to understand Indian cities which have obfuscated their real form rather than reveal their true images. In order to project a clearer image of Shahjahanabad, historical evidences that may be gleaned from numerous sources have been highlighted here. The society that evolved in contemporary India was a consequence of the natural process of assimilation at the cultural level and a conscious act of state policy. The urban spaces created by this society were analogous to its development. The experience of inhabiting Shahjahanabad was not a ubiquitous feature duplicated in the other capital cities of Asia and the "Islamic World". The fortunes of Shahjahanabad were not linked solely with the centripetal tendencies of the Empire, but had an identity outside it. That is why the city retained its prominence and economic viability even after the Mughal rulers had lost their de facto powers. On the other hand, the cross-section of society who had contributed towards the inhabiting of its urbanspace, had many things in common and had created a distinct, urban culture. A conjunction of several factors inhibited the growth of the city in the late eighteenth century. The officials of the English East India Company assumed power over Shahjahanabad in 1803 and reinforced the peace process that had already begun. Certain dichotomies of this period were translated in the urban fabric of urban life and space even before the show of cultural belligerence by the British. Creating a Transparent Democracy: A New Model (Fourth Edition)
Motilal Banarsidass Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2010; 8178223104; Fourth Edition; Softcover; New;
It is generally believed that democracy, though not perfect, is yet the best form of government created by man. However, with all its merits, democracy leaves scope for betterment. The present book is an attempt to point out and remove the defects of democracy. Political power and authority, to be effective, must be decentralised. Decentralisation is necessary for social justice and people's participation in decision making. People must be provided political literacy. It is unrealistic to expect illiterate and ill-informed people to understand political literacy. It is unrealistic to expect illiterate and ill-informed people to understand political and economic issues rationally and comprehensively. Further, democracy without accountability means little. As such all those who exercise political power, must be accountable for their decisions. Among freedoms, the freedom of expression is of fundamental importance.Printed Pages: 64. 102539

The second Gulf War can be considered as a turning point in this epoch making development. The eventual dissolution of the Ussr not only removed. The rival superpower from the international arena but also left the United States as the sole manager of the course of international Politics according to its own vision. The collapse of the USSR created a situation of bonhomie in the Western Camp, particularly in the United States and United Kingdom. There was a mass hysteria for demanding Peace dividend. New Theories about the withering away of state sovereignty, the Globalisation of economy, the End of History, the control and Prevention of weapons of mass destruction in the developing Countries and the clash of civilizations were propagated.
