This volume is an attempt at a connected history of Indian Sculpture setting forth in clear terms the varied trends and artistic whole. The learned scholar has traced the history of Indian sculpture from the beginning to the mediaeval times bringing within his scope a vast field of study. Special emphasis is laid on the origin and development of the basic strains as well as fundamental characteristics of Indian plastic art in a historical perspective. Plastic art of the subcontinent found expression in many important schools and distinctive styles. It has been the endeavour of the author to interpret the changes of form through the ages as a logical, orderly and organic evolution. A Survey of Indian Sculpture, divided into seven chapters, deals with the story of the plastic art of the subcontinent as long as it remained vital and active. Aesthetics: Approaches, Concepts and Problems
D.K. Printworld (P) Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2010; 8124605556; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New; 15 x 23 Cm
This work may well be expected to serve as an introduction to the study of aesthetics, suitable alike to the needs of our students and the general reader. A fair part of it deals with some of the more difficult concepts and problems one encounters in contemporary Western philosophical discourse on art. At the same time, the book is studded with illustrative references to contemporary aesthetic practice in India. This is true of almost every individual chapter; and the close is provided by a critical and comprehensive, yet intelligible account of the Indian theory of rasa, to which some eminent Western aestheticians, such as Susanne K. Langer and Harold Osborne, have referred admiringly in some of their basic writings. What should make this book specially attractive to enquiring readers is its consistent attempt to reflect on teasing aesthetical questions with clarity. Printed Pages: 455. 100349

Hijras: The Labelled Deviants
Gyan Books Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2000; 8121202663; Hardcover; New; New;
The present study "Hijras : The Labelled Deviants" is the outcome of the help rendered to me by my teachers and friends. I, therefore, consider it my great privilege to express my deep sense of gratitude towards all of them. To begin with, it was Prof. Prakash N. Pimpley, my teacher, who suggested to me to work on Eunuchs (Hijras). Since there was hardly any work available on the subject the study seemed to be an uphill task. However, it was Prof. Pimpley's help and inspiration that the study could make steady progress. For all his help I remain indebted to him.Since the field work constituted the major and most vital aspect of the study, I wish to put on record the help and cooperation of Mr. Vijay Shandilya, my cousin, who helped me by arranging a meeting with a hijra. It is in the context of my first encounter with a hijra that I would like to mention the timely help of Prof. A. Mahajan, currently Chairman of Department of Sociology, Panjab University, Chandigarh. An unhealthy situation arose after the interview with the first case at village Kansal near Chandigarh. The contact-man, through whom the hijra was approached, was assaulted and threatened by the latter of dire consequences. Prof. Mahajan, on my request, immediately responded and with the help of police solved the problem. It was because of that further field work could be carried out. I express my sincere thanks to him.In carrying out the field work, my friend and class-fellow, Mr. S.S. Shergill, currently advocate, Punjab and Haryana High Court, Chandigarh, helped me enormously. He accompanied me to different places and even interviewed one of the most informative and important cases at Jalandhar. His constant help and encouragement was in fact the pivot of the entire field work. I thank him.It was with the help of my teachers and friends that the first report, in the form of a dissertation, could be prepared. Subsequently, two papers entitled "Eunuchs : Past and Present" (The Eastern Anthropologist, Vol. 37, and later abstracted in Sociological Abstracts of ISA) and "Hijra : A Study of An Atypical Role (with Prof. P.N. Pimpley) (Avadh Jr. of Soc. Sciences, Vol. II and later abstracted in Sociological Abstracts of ISA) were published. This renewed my interest in the. subject. It was at this time that I happened to meet Prof. Serena Nanda of John Jay College of Criminal Justice, New York (USA). My brief discussion and subsequent exchange of articles with her helped me tremendously. In fact, her comments on my already published papers helped me to make necessary amendments in my already written draft of this book. For the cooperation and useful comments, I remain grateful to Prof. Nanda. I also thank Prof. Rajeshwar Prasad, Director, Institute of Social Sciences, Agra University, Agra; Mr. Thomas Smith, with whom I could correspond through Prof. Prasad; and Prof. A.M. Shah, Department of Sociology, University of Delhi, Delhi; for sending me their respective papers. In fact, their papers were the only literature to begin with in the context of hijras. Also, I would like to make special mention of my friend, Mr. Mohinder P. Singh, for carefully going through the draft of this study and making useful comments for certain necessary modifications in the introductory chapter.I wish to mention my wife, Suman, who is a constant source of encouragement to me. She inspired me to complete this work. Her careful readings of the work helped in clarifying many ideas expressed in this book.Last but not the least, I sincerely thank Mr. Pardesi for the excellent typing of the manuscript.Printed Pages: 151. 105943

Aryan Books International; New Delhi, India; 2011; 8186787178; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New; 22 x 28 Cm
The Chandellas of Jejakabhukti (present Bundelkhand region of U.P. & M.P.) were great rulers, warriors and builders of their times. Their cultural achievements were more significant than their political achievements. They decorated their kingdom with forts, palaces, temples, tanks, lakes and gardens, which were mainly centered in the cities of Mahoba (U.P.)' Kalanjara (U.P.) and Ajaigarh (M.P.) and to lesser degree in towns of Dudhahi, Chandpur, Mandanpur and Deogarh, all in Uttar Pradesh. But none of these places could be compared in magnificence with Khajuraho which was adorned by the Chandellas with beautiful temples, tanks, lakes and gardens. Last Days of Ahom Monarchy: A History of Assam from 1769 to 1826
Munshiram Manoharlal Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 1993; 81-215-0462-1; First Edition; Hard Cover; New; New; 15 Cms x 23 Cms
The present work gives a critical and comprehensive account of the last phase of the Ahom sovereign rule in Assam beginning with the first popular challenge and introduction of the British rule in 1826. The study gives an introductory but clear idea of Ahom administration and socio-economic life of Assam under the Ahoms and discusses in detail the popular rebellions against the Ahom government, the court intrigues and the external aggressions of the period, all of which worked to bring about the disintegration and downfall of the Ahom kingdom. The study presents an objective study of the life and works of Purnananda Burhagohain, who had been the Premier of the Ahom kingdom from 1783-1817 and the most noted figure of the last days of Ahom rule. It clears many of the controversial points centering round that great personality. It also deals with Assam's relations with the neighbouring powers including Burma and the English East India Company with its headquarters in Bengal. The authoress makes full use of the original sources, both published and unpublished, available in different libraries in the State, including the National Archives of India, West Bengal State Archives and Assam Secretariat Records Office, Inscriptions and coins have also been consulted and interviews with the descendants of Purnananda Burhagohain and Sarbananda, a prominent Matak chief were taken. Oral history has also been utilised. Printed Pages: 316 with 2 maps. 002398

Tantu: The Loom of Life
Niyogi Books; New Delhi, India; 8189738836; Hardcover; New; New;
This epic novel examines the very fiber of contemporary Indian life – social, political and psychological – basically in terms of post-independence, post-Gandhian scene. It is panoramic in scope, moving as it does from Bangalore to a small village near Channarayapattana, to Mysore, to Banaras and Delhi. Police brutality, hooliganism at the village level, bourgeois culture, smuggling of works of art, betrayal of a great heritage for monetary benefit by mercenaries are some of the issues raised and dealt with. The ubiquitous corruption, bribery and nepotism in high places as well as in low places is portrayed with such absolute candour and honesty that the steady erosion of traditional values and the rank philistinism that has enveloped the present day life is shown as eating away the very moral fiber of India today.The true Gandhian idealist, a honest and uncompromising journalist-editor; a “liberated” career woman who sleeps around in order to gain favors in business; the academic-politician with a carefully cultivated charm seducing gullible and impressionable young women etc. All in all, it is simply a fascinating novel about modern India – surveying as it does the state of the country from Mahatma Gandhi to Indira Gandhi ending with the emergence of the “Emergency”.Printed Pages: 1236. 106557

Mandra
Niyogi Books; New Delhi, India; 9789381523360; Hardcover; New; New;
Mandra, the Saraswati Samman winner for 2010, is one of the most acclaimed epic novels of Bhyrappa. Though it takes its theme from the classical question of art versus morality, many more subtler and complex issues haunting human life are marvelously interwoven. Rooted deeply in the harsh realities of the world, the governing theme evolves like a banyan tree in all directions and pictures many home-truths that are inseparable with art, artist, art-tradition, art-criticism and the world of connoisseurs.Printed Pages: 688. 106551

Protection, Conservation and Preservation of Indian Monuments
Aryan Books International; New Delhi, India; 1993; 8173050147; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New; 18 x 25 Cm
The present work traces the gensis and evolution of the structural conservation and chemical preservations of the vestiges of the past. The antiquarian laws prevalent in the country have also been highlighted in sufficient details. India has the pride possession of the cultural heritage in the form of temples, stupas, monoliths, monasteries, etc., some of which are over two thousand years old. These monumental edifices of the past are scattered all round the country in different and sometimes extreme climatic conditions. Being vestiges of the past they have to be protected as per the laws of protection in vogue in the country and have to be well kept and preserved to be handed down to the posterity in the reasonably well preserved conditions. The entire process required detailed examination of each and every movement taken into consideration the material used in the initial construction work. The work of conservation/preservation has to be taken up thereafter. The work while tracing the genesis and evolution of the idea of structural conservation and chemical preservation in different Silp texts, also deals with the fundamentals of such works which includes retaining the original character of the building while carrying out the repairs and renovation etc. The environmental development of the of the cultural heritage has been of considerable importance, particularly in view of the urbanization of even the remote localities in which such edifices are located. An attempt has therefore been made to deal with the subject with its historical perspective. The genesis and evolution of the antiquarian laws in the country in vogue since the advent of British Rule with their historical background have also been highlighted in sufficient details, which would make the work quite interesting and useful for all concerned. Oxford University Press; New Delhi, India; 2009; 978019806279; First Edition; Paperback; New; 14 Cms x 22 Cms
This collection of incomplete memoirs provides rare insights into the personality of an outstanding economist and well-known institution builder in India. V.K.R.V. Rao founded the Delhi School of Economics and the Institute of Economic Growth, Delhi, and later, the Institute for Social and Economic Change, Bangalore. Rao worked in close association with the key players in independent India’s politico-economic policymaking such as Pandit Nehru and P.C. Mahalanobis. Distinguished academics P.N. Dhar, C.H. Hanumantha Rao, G. Thimmaiah, Uma Datta Roy Choudhury, and Ashish Bose highlight Rao’s contribution to various fields of applied economic research. These accounts fill some of the gaps in the memoirs left by the passing away of V.K.R.V. Rao. 033997

Bhattoji Diksita on the Gajasutra (South Asian Perspectives: 1)
Aditya Prakashan; New Delhi, India; 2013; 8184701969; First Edition; Softcover; New; 16 x 24 Cm
The present volume intends to be the first of a series under the general title of Vykhynaml (A Garland of Commentaries). The purpose of this series is to illustrate and explain the genre of commentary as an integral part of Sanskrit intellectual history. The works chosen will belong to different domains: stra, that is grammatical, poetic, and other technical literature as well as kvya, the Sanskrit genre of belles lettres. In the end, this series hopes to include commentaries of different types from different regions and times. These commentaries can be on a single source text-as in the case of the present volume - or can center around the explanation of a specific topic. The criterion for “commentary” is a deep engagement with a problematic text or concept. The prerequisite for inclusion in this series is that the commentaries must be previously untranslated. The present volume offers a glimpse into early modern commentaries in the field of vykarana, the discipline of grammar. The selection at hand is comprised of three commentaries of Bhattoji Dkshita, the 17th century Mahrshtrian brahmin writing in Benares, on the stra 1.3.67 of the Astdhyy, often called the Gajastra after the elephants that feature so prominently in its examples. The present authors have chosen these specific commentaries on this particular stra since they are exemplary in regard to their subject; Bhattoji’s analysis and interpretation of the stra both takes into account much previous scholarship on the stra and leads later scholars to further discussions that take up the subtleties of Bhattoji’s position — often in critical ways. Furthermore, the method and style of his commentaries here reproduced and translated are in many ways emblematic of the style of early modern Sanskrit intellectuals. Printed Pages: 146. 100084

Various studies reveal occupational mobility among ex-untouchables, but, few studies have focused their due attention on self employment. The focus of this study is on the entry of ex-untouchables belonging to five different caste groups into the self employed jobs. In other words, this is the study of entrepreneurship among ex untouchables. The study has analysed a number of motivational factors in historical and social back ground of the respondents who have adopted modern jobs. Also, the impact of special policies and programmes of the government is identified with the entry of ex-untouchable persons into the self employed jobs. This is a multi dimensional study. Although it is sociological, it is equally of importance to scholars, administrators, planners and students of economics of growth, psyschology and history. Printed Pages: 171. 112505

It also critically surveys the obscure political history of northern India and gives a vivid account of the social and cultural life of the period. The work for the first time treats at length the ancestry and date of Yasovarman, the identification of the king of Gauda killed by him, the date of Yasovarman's battle with Lalitaditya and also most tantalizing problem of the successors of the Kanauj king. The Philosophy of the Upanisads. A Study Based on the Evaluation of the Comments of Samkara, Ramanuja and Madhva
Munshiram Manoharlal Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2013; 8121510503; Reprint; Hardcover; New; New; 14 Cms x 22 Cms
The Upanisads which contain lofty philosophical teachings of the great seers constitute the most authoritative sourcebook for the Vedanta system of philosophy. However, there is no unanimity among the ancient exponents of Vedanta regarding the nature of the philosophy adumbrated in the Upanishads. Dr. Chari's scholarly work attempts to make a dispassionate study of the philosophical passages of the fourteen Principal Upanisads by giving due consideration to not only the comments of Samkara, Ramanuja and Madhva, but more importantly, the authoritative views of Badarayana as enshrined in his classic Vedantasutras. In the first part of the book, he presents the important passages of the Upanisads along with English rendering indicating the variations in the interpretation by the three commentators and also discusses their philosophical implications with reference to the Vedanta doctrines developed in the post-Upanisadic period. In the second part he has attempted to consolidate the variety of philosophical thoughts scattered all over the Upanisads into coherent doctrines under five broad subjects: Brahman, jivatman, jagat, sadhana, and parama-purusartha. In the final chapter he conclusively establishes on the basis of an objective evaluation of the views of the commentators that the Upanisads do not support the main tenets of Advaita such as the concept of Nirvisesa Brahman, the identity of jivatman and Brahman, the phenomenal character of the jagat and the doctrine of maya. The author maintains with sufficient textual support that the nature of the philosophy advocated by the Upanisads is Theistic Monism (savisesadvaita). This book, which is the first of its kind, presents an authentic and comprehensive exposition of the philosophy of the Upanisads. Printed Pages: 356. 014175

The Philosophy of Visistadvaita Vedanta: A Study Based on Vedanta Desika's Adhikarana-Saravali
Motilal Banarsidass Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2008; 8120831802; Hardcover; New; New;
The school of Vedanta designated as Visistadvaita was expounded by Sri Ramanuja in the classic Sri-Bhasya, which were developed by Sri Vedanta Desika in his two philosophical treatises titled Tattva-mukta-kalapa and Adhikarana-saravali. This scholarly work of Dr. S.M.S. Chari deals with the Adhikarana saravali. The variety of theories related to Vedanta which are discussed in the 156 Adhikaranas of the Vedanta-sutras are consolidated and presented in a sequential order under five major headings: the doctrine of Brahman, the doctrine of universe and Brahman, the doctrine of sadhana and the doctrine of Paramapurusartha. In the concluding chapter on General Evaluation, Dr. Chari discusses dispassionately the differing views of Samkara, Ramanuja and Madhva on the fundamental controversial theories of Vedanta. This volume along with the author's other books on Vedanta would be invaluable for a fuller understanding of Visistadvaita in all its aspects.Printed Pages: 435. 102152

27293 S.M. Srinivasa Chari with a Foreword By Mm. N.S. Ramanuja Tatacharya
The Philosophy of the Vedantasutra: A Study Based on the Evaluation of the Commentaries of Samkara, Ramanuja and Madhva
Munshiram Manoharlal Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2010; 8121508096; Reprint; Hardcover; New; New; 14 Cms x 22 Cms
The Vedantasutras of Badarayana which codifies the teachings of the Upanisads is acclaimed by all as the fundamental source-book for the system of Vedanta philosophy. Nevertheless several schools of thought such as the Advaita of Samkara, the Visistadvaita of Ramanuja and the Dvaita of Madhva have been developed from it, each one differing from the other in respect of major doctrines. This makes it difficult to determine the specific nature of the Vedanta philosophy as enunciated by Badarayana in his classic sutras apart from what is claimed by the respective commentators. Dr. Chari's scholarly work attempts to bring out the views of Badarayana on the philosophy of Vedanta as enshrined in the sutras. He discusses comprehensively and in a systematic manner with reference to the selected sutras, the five fundamental doctrines of Vedanta namely, the nature of Brahman, the nature of the individual soul and its relation to Brahman, the nature of the universe and its relation to Brahman, the nature of the means to attain Brahman and the nature of the Supreme Goal. On the basis of an objective evaluation of the comments of Samkara, Ramanuja, and Madhva, the three principal exponents of Vedanta, he has conclusively established that the Vedanta philosophy of Badarayana is theistic monism, upholding the oneness of the Ultimate Reality as organically related to the sentient souls and the non-sentient cosmic matter. The book which is the first of its kind seeks to provide a deeper insight into the Vedantasutras. Printed Pages: 227. 024592

The Philosophy of the Bhagavadgita: A Study Based on the Evaluation of the Commentaries of Samkara, Ramanuja and Madhva
Munshiram Manoharlal Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2014; 8121511011; Reprint; Hardcover; New; New; 15 x 23 Cm
This scholarly work presents a comprehensive and authentic exposition of the philosophy of the Bhagavadgita as enshrined in the original text by according due consideration to the commentaries of Samkara, Ramanuja and Madhva. In the first part of the book, Dr Chari makes an indepth study of the selected verses from each adhyaya and discusses their philosophical implications with particular reference to the Vedanta doctrines and connected issues advanced by the commentators while interpreting the crucial verses. This analytical and comparative study helps to understand how some of the basic tenets of Vedanta embedded in the Gita are explained differently by the commentators and also to assess the extent to which these are actually reflected in the original text. In the second part, the author has attempted to consolidate the various philosophical, theological and ethical ideas scattered all over the Gita and reconstruct them into coherent doctrines under three broad headings: Tattvas covering Paramatman, jivatman, and jagat, sadhana comprising karma-yoga, jnana-yoga and bhakti-yoga, and parama-purusartha. In the final chapter, Dr Chari examines dispassionately the views of the commentators on these theories and comes to the conclusion with sufficient textual authority that some of the tenets of Samskara and also Madhva do not fully conform to the teachings of the Gita. This book, which is the first of its kind, throws new light on the philosophy of the Gita. Printed Pages: 325. 013482

Universal History of Music: Compiled from Diverse Sources Together with Various Original Notes on Hindu Music
Chaukhamba Sanskrit Studies/Chaukhamba Amarabharati Prakshan; Varanasi, India; 2005; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New;
Music pervades all nature. It is co-eval with the creation. There is nothing in nature that arouses our attention or affects our feelings so quickly as a sound. The murmuring of water, the sighs of the zephyrs, the whispers of the evening breeze, the roar of the storms, the chirpings of the birds, the cries of the animals, the hum of distant multitudes, and the concussion of sonorous bodies, excite in our minds feeling of pleasure, pain, or fear, and contain in them the germs of music. A musical sound is a noise no doubt, by every noise is not a musical sound. There is marked difference between the two. Noise is a confused combination of sounds resulting from the concussion of non-elastic bodies; musical sound is a pure harmonious effect, produced from a simple elastic body, such as the tone of a bell. It flies further and is heard at a greater distance then a noise. The musical instruments played at a gathering may be heard at a distance of a mile, but the noise made by the people at the gathering, however overpowering it may be on the spot, is scarcely audible at a similar distance. Sound (Sanskrit, Nada) has been described as either inarticulate (Dhanyatmaka), or articulate (Varnatmaka). Instrumental music is considered inarticulate, and vocal music articulate by the curious structure of the vocal organs, man is capable of making a greater variety of tones than any other animal, and has at his disposal the power of giving expression to every emotion. The human voice, in its tone and accent is undoubtedly the purest and most sonorous of any which distinguishes the vocal animals. In those countries where man may be said, like a plant, to grow and flourish, the voice expands, and colder regions, where the mouth is more constantly kept closed, the voice is restricted and escapes with difficulty. Hence it is that the Afghan, Dutch and similar other languages are so guttural that in the delivery of some of their words, the speakers seem As If they are choked; and hence it is that in India, Greece, Italy and other Southern Countries, the climate of which is noted so much for its beauty and mildness, the vocal art has risen to so much fame.Printed Pages: 386. 100962

It flies further and is heard at a greater distance than a noise. The musical instruments played at a gathering may be heard at a distance of a mile, but the noise made by the people at the gathering, however overpowering it may be on the spot, is scarcely audible at a similar distance. Sound (Sanskrit, Nada) has been described as either inarticulate (Dhanyatmaka) or articulate (Varnatmaka). Instrumental music is considered inarticulate and vocal music articulate. By the curious structure of the vocal organs, man is capable of making a greater variety of tones than any other animal and has at his disposal the power of giving expression to every emotion. The human voice, in its tone and accent, is undoubtedly the purest and most sonorous of any which distinguishes the vocal animals.Printed Pages: 342. 104046
