27201 Shakti M. Gupta; Foreword By Late Dr C. Sivaramamurti
Plant Myths and Traditions in India (Revised and Enlarged Edition)
Munshiram Manoharlal Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2013; 8121510074; Fourth Revised and Enlarged Edition; Hardcover; New; New; 16.5 Cms x 25 Cms
Trees and plants play an important part in the myths and customs of India. Many are considered holy, often for reasons that are lost in the mists of antiquity - they are associated and identified with Gods, planets, months, etc. - certain plants are used as protection against witchcraft and the evil eye - some plants bring luck and are offered in the temples - and others play an important part in other religious rites. These traditions and myths form an important aspect of the Indian’s mental background and Dr. Gupta, has performed a most useful service in bringing together all those are known on these subjects from the older Indian literature to modern research. The author discusses the forty-five most important trees and plants and describes the myths and customs connected with each. Specimens of Indian sculpture illustrating the various myths are reproduced on numerous plates. Hinduism: An Introduction
Vakils, Feffer and Simons Ltd; Mumbai, India; 2002; 8187111194; Twelfth Edition; Paperback; New; New; 23 Cms x 29 Cms
Hinduism is the oldest living religion in the world and is unique in its tolerance of other religions. It offers different spiritual paths to persons of different aptitudes, and places emphasis on individual spiritual experience. Yet, in view of its free thinking and lack of compulsion, educated Hindus of today and Hindus living abroad know very little of their religion. There is, therefore, a great need for a simple but comprehensive book on the subject. Likewise, tourists visiting India are often in search of a concise book which will help them understand the Hindu religion and guide them on their visits to Hindu temples and monuments. Shakunthala Jaggannathan has written this book to explain Hinduism to Indians and to visitors from abroad, so that the urban Indian can comprehend the roots of his civilisation, and the tourist can comprehend the various aspects of Hinduism and relate them to what he sees around him in India.concepts such as Karma, Dharma and reincarnation are explained in a simplified form. Nuclear Pakistan
KW Publishers; New Delhi, India; 2012; 9789381904251; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New;
Pakistan has relied for more than a quarter century on its nuclear weapons to conduct its strategy against India. The militarys grand strategy has rested on maintaining the centrality of the covert war (war through terrorism) strategy. Pakistans acquisition of nuclear weapons has been rationalised as a deterrent to Indian conventional military superiority which, its Foreign Minister had once stated, hangs like the Sword of Damocles over Pakistans head. In turn, this was used as an umbrella under which to pursue a proxy war through terrorism. Nuclear weapons have been perceived as a shield to deter an Indian aggression which possibly could be prompted in response to the provocative (sustained and/or high profile) terrorism being conducted from the Pakistani soil, sponsored by the state actors. Pakistans reliance on nuclear weapons has also grown much more with its growing instability and rising threat of failure of the state.Printed Pages: 250. 104335

Pakistan's Millitary and Its Strategy
KW Publishers; New Delhi, India; 2009; 818796684X; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New;
This book is an attempt to fill a critical void in our knowledge in understanding Pakistan’s military which on one side began to dominate the power structure of the country and at another sought a unique strategy to apply force for ideological and political goals. Most of the scholarship has focused on the former; and literature on the latter aspect is scant. This is understandable since few countries clearly spell out their military strategy. But as the victim of Pakistan’s military strategy in its myriad dimensions of building it and using it for six decades it is incumbent for us to understand its dynamics in the past to identify the pointers for the future.Pakistan army has ruled the country for the major part of six decades directly and indirectly; and this has inevitably led to its military strategy shaping the contours of Pakistan’s strategic culture if not its grand strategy. Its strategy has relied heavily on irregular guerrilla warfare conducted as a covert war (through guerrilla fighters, terrorists and religious extremists etc.) and external support for building military power. And nuclear weapons reinforced the confidence and flexibility of tactics in the operational role of covert war which more often than not has been baked at a selected time by overt military offensive.This comprehensive study of Pakistan’s military and its strategy to pursue ideological and political goals in the future military and foreign policy of Pakistan would be of immense value to the professionals as well as those interested in national defence and military strategy.Printed Pages: 320. 104435

Shahjahanabad: A City of Delhi 1638 1857
Munshiram Manoharlal Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, Indias; 2015; 8121508029; Reprint; Hardcover; New; New; 14 Cms x 22 Cms
Shahjahanabad was inhabited in the seventeenth century as the capital city of the Mughal Empire, in the geographical region of Delhi. This work focuses on the structure of the city, its subsequent growth and the numerous functions if came to assume in a period of two hundred years. This study examines the theoretical formulations applied to understand Indian cities which have obfuscated their real form rather than reveal their true images. In order to project a clearer image of Shahjahanabad, historical evidences that may be gleaned from numerous sources have been highlighted here. The society that evolved in contemporary India was a consequence of the natural process of assimilation at the cultural level and a conscious act of state policy. The urban spaces created by this society were analogous to its development. The experience of inhabiting Shahjahanabad was not a ubiquitous feature duplicated in the other capital cities of Asia and the "Islamic World". The fortunes of Shahjahanabad were not linked solely with the centripetal tendencies of the Empire, but had an identity outside it. That is why the city retained its prominence and economic viability even after the Mughal rulers had lost their de facto powers. On the other hand, the cross-section of society who had contributed towards the inhabiting of its urbanspace, had many things in common and had created a distinct, urban culture. A conjunction of several factors inhibited the growth of the city in the late eighteenth century. The officials of the English East India Company assumed power over Shahjahanabad in 1803 and reinforced the peace process that had already begun. Certain dichotomies of this period were translated in the urban fabric of urban life and space even before the show of cultural belligerence by the British. Creating a Transparent Democracy: A New Model (Fourth Edition)
Motilal Banarsidass Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2010; 8178223104; Fourth Edition; Softcover; New;
It is generally believed that democracy, though not perfect, is yet the best form of government created by man. However, with all its merits, democracy leaves scope for betterment. The present book is an attempt to point out and remove the defects of democracy. Political power and authority, to be effective, must be decentralised. Decentralisation is necessary for social justice and people's participation in decision making. People must be provided political literacy. It is unrealistic to expect illiterate and ill-informed people to understand political literacy. It is unrealistic to expect illiterate and ill-informed people to understand political and economic issues rationally and comprehensively. Further, democracy without accountability means little. As such all those who exercise political power, must be accountable for their decisions. Among freedoms, the freedom of expression is of fundamental importance.Printed Pages: 64. 102539

The second Gulf War can be considered as a turning point in this epoch making development. The eventual dissolution of the Ussr not only removed. The rival superpower from the international arena but also left the United States as the sole manager of the course of international Politics according to its own vision. The collapse of the USSR created a situation of bonhomie in the Western Camp, particularly in the United States and United Kingdom. There was a mass hysteria for demanding Peace dividend. New Theories about the withering away of state sovereignty, the Globalisation of economy, the End of History, the control and Prevention of weapons of mass destruction in the developing Countries and the clash of civilizations were propagated. Impact of these developments on the Policies and response of developing countries has been the subject of analysis and discussion in this volume.Printed Pages: 348. 105801

A young Rajput orphaned by the revolt of 1857, Beni Madho Ruswa travels many years later from Cawnpore to Delhi to get the divan of Mirza Asadullah Khan Ghalib autographed by the great poet himself. Young Mir Taqi Mir, a rising star in the world of poetry, meets the first great love of his life, Nurus Saadat, an exquisite beauty from Isfahan. A tumultuous love affair follows, accompanied by ravishing verse. Aspiring poet and wealthy businessman Darbari Mal Vafa pays a visit to Lucknow and learns of the life and work of the poet Shaikh Mushafi through the stories told by his widow. Poets—historical figures ranging from Ghalib, Mirza Jan-e Janan, Budh Singh Qalandar, Amir Khan Anjam, Mir, Kishan Chand Ikhlas, Haidar Ali Atash and Mushafi—and poetry occupy centre stage in the fabulous stories of The Sun that Rose from the Earth, set in the great cities of north India and spanning the glittering age of the Mughals.Printed Pages: 600. 103378

Ayesha Siddiqui, 31 and independent, has just proposed to the man she loves. His silence makes her crash through the windshield of her car. In her comatose state, Ayesha floats between Time Past and Time Present. The narrative meanders through Ayesha's life, throwing up startling facts about her immediate family, relatives and friends. It brings to the fore her anguish, her love-hate relationship with her mother and her failed relationships with men, as she struggles to survive and build a career and an identity in a male-dominated society. The story is set against the backdrop of Karachi - a city where the past, present and future battle it out on billboards, TV and the backs of rickshaws. The throes of flux, fluidity and transition being witnessed by the country provide a parallel to Ayesha's own angst. Printed Pages: 288. 108503

India After the Global Crisis
Orient BlackSwan; New Delhi, India; 2012; 8125045090; Hardcover; New; New;
India after the Global Crisis assesses India’s resilience in the face of the global financial crisis but then shows how the global crisis and our domestic policy failures have taken a toll on India’s economic performance: growth has slowed significantly, inflation has remained high, the external current account deficit has more than doubled, and the rate of domestic investment has fallen. Drawing upon four decades of experience in the World Bank, the Central Government, academia and India Inc., Shankar Acharya probes deep into the daunting challenges that lie ahead for India. This volume is written against the backdrop of renewed global economic turmoil—stalled economic revival in 2011, mounting problems of sovereign fiscal stress and banking fragility in Europe and US—and clear signs of economic slowdown amid political weakness and indecision in India. The author also outlines the priorities that the government must focus on to overcome these challenges, and debunks several myths that weaken current policies.Printed Pages: 240. 101817

Waging: A Silent War
Times Group Books; New Delhi, India; 2012; 9789380828718; First Edition; Softcover; New;
"Waging a Silent War" covers the heroic story of a family caught up in the grip of revolutionary fevour that overtakes pre independent India in the 1940s. The story, a throwback to the past, is narrated by members of the Talukdar family, each episode dealt with by one of them, the prime discovery having been unfolded by the surviving matriarch, Julie Talukdar, who makes a final trip to the Ballygunj ancestral home along with her three children, Tanu Tara and Abhi, before it is put up for sale.A Virtual Pandora's box opens up when they discover the 'shinduk', an iron box, which lies abandoned in the house with its mysterious contents. It is an eye opener for the three: from its contents - sepia tinted letters, notes and a diary whose pages are rusted with age - they discover an astonishing world, a bygone era, where loyalty, treachery, courage, war and romance all take centre stage.Printed Pages: 240. 104518

Satyadev Dubey: A Fifty-year Journey Through Theatre
Niyogi Books; New Delhi, India; 8189738992; Hardcover; New; New;
Satyadev Dubey: A Life Lived Through Theatre documents the work of Satyadev Dubey—director, actor, teacher and playwright. Dubey has been passionately involved in theatre full time since the early sixties. Along with the late Shyamanand Jalan in Kolkata and Rajinder Paul, publisher-printer of the theatre magazine Enact in Delhi, Dubey was responsible for the great exchange of plays that happened between Hindi, Bengali, Kannada and Marathi theatre in the sixties and seventies. Amongst the playwrights who came to national recognition during this energetic exchange were Vijay Tendulkar, Mohan Rakesh, Badal Sircar and Girish Karnad.This book brings together essays, interviews and reviews by playwrights, actors and theatre critics as well as a selection from amongst Dubey’s prolific output of articles in the Mumbai press. It brings to light the phases of Dubey’s work, his style and method of direction, his system for actor training, the furious debates about theatre and the freedom of expression that he was involved with, the manner in which he managed his economics without ever applying for government or corporate funding to put on the boards over a hundred plays in a career spanning over 50 years.Along the way, the book reveals what a theatre practitioner must give up when he commits his life to doing non-mainstream, non-spectacular plays in a theatre world that was once led by idealism but has since moved on to a more pragmatic approach to life and work. It also reveals the creative energy that drives Satyadev Dubey, propelling him to continue finding ways to do theatre, regardless of the circumstances.Printed Pages: 312 with 35 b/w photographs. 106610

Searching for Non-Western Roots of Conflict Resolution Discourses, Norms, and Case Studies
KW Publishers; New Delhi, India; 2013; 9789381904718; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New;
Conflict resolution, as a defined field of study, has been facing stiff challenges in the post Cold War world. The multipolar setting of the globalised world with rising incidence of intra-state conflicts and growing convergence between security and development issues have generated fresh as well as severely mutated old challenges which most often do not fit well within traditional theoretical explanatory categories evolved within Peace and Conflict Studies. This disjunction is often generated by the fact that the modern conflict zones are mostly located in the developing and underdeveloped parts of the global South whereas the discourses of Conflict resolution continue to be largely western in origin and focus. Dissatisfaction with this process led to the search for alternative values in non-western discourses either philosophical such as Buddhism, or Gandhian methodology of peaceful satyagraha. Attempts made by Peace and Conflict resolution theorists to borrow and integrate non-western concepts within the paradigm, however important, are but small steps which indicate the growing complexities associated with the process as well as academic analyses and discussions related to conflict resolution. More micro-level studies of attempts towards conflict resolution from primarily non-western conflict zones as well as alternative theorisations about no-western norms(if any) and discourses would be necessary to ascertain whether a non-western alternative paradigm for conflict resolution is possible, desirable, and whether it could be integrated and absorbed successfully within the already established theoretical models of conflict. The present edited volume represents some of these viewpoints. It includes nine essays which try to look into the process of conflict resolution from various angles, the primary aim being to discover whether it could be done through non-western prism and would be of interest to both practitioners and academics and, ofcourse, students.Printed Pages: 230. 104306

Reappraising India's Look East Policy: Time for a Human Security Oriented Agenda
KW Publishers; New Delhi, India; 2011; 9789380502663; First Edition; Softcover; New;
India’s expanding links with the countries located in Southeast Asia and East Asia along with her burgeoning influence in the Asia-Pacific and Indian Ocean zones since the 1990s have come under the collective analytical framework of ‘Look East Policy,’ and have been scrutinized and analyzed from every possible scholarly dimension over the years. The purpose of this paper is to attempt a reappraisal of India’s Look East as it has evolved through these various twists and turns trying to find out whether it has developed a degree of strategic coherence and whether it would be appropriate to recast and project it within an alternative ‘human security’ oriented paradigm.Printed Pages: 30. 104377

Issues and Perspective in the Securitisation Process: Perceptionsfrom the India and Europe
KW Publishers; New Delhi, India; 2012; 9789381904091; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New;
The present volume of essays has come out of an international conference organised by the Institute of Foreign Policy Studies (IFPS), University of Calcutta, as a part of its United Nations Academic Programme (UNAI) on Peace and Conflict Studies. As a part of the UNAI initiative, the IFPS held a one day international conference on January 19, 2012, on the theme Issues and Perspectives in the Securitisation Process: Perceptions from India and Europe for research scholars from the IFPS and the University of Warsaw. The theme was found to be relevant and appropriate as a part of the UNAI initiative particularly because the IFPS is engaged in the task of acting as the global hub for Peace and Conflict studies as a part of the UNAI initiative. In the essays compiled in this volume, the contributors have tried to grapple with the securitisation process and its impact, by looking at various aspects of both traditional and non-traditional security issues.Printed Pages: 120. 104343

KW Publishers; New Delhi, India; 2012; 9789380502885; First Edition; Softcover; New;
In the light of India emerging as a leader in the IT and communication fields, efforts must be made to optimally exploit available expertise to develop an appropriate C4I2SR system with innovative technology to the Indian Army. Courting Destiny: A Memori
Penguin/Viking; New Delhi, India; 2008; 067008218X; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New; 15 x 23 Cm
"Born in 1925, Shanti Bhushan was witness to the formative years of the Indian republic. Courting Destiny traces the remarkable story of his life—the family’s origins in the town of Bijnor in the United Provinces, the experience of growing up in a joint family in Allahabad, initial encounters with the law when the Constitution of India was being framed, the distinguished career as a lawyer and law minister, culminating in the campaign for judicial accountability. These memoirs provide a participant’s account of some of the most interesting and seminal cases that laid the foundations of India’s constitutional history. They include the Keshav Singh case of 1964 which led to the first standoff between the executive and the judiciary; Indira Gandhi’s election case which unseated her as prime minister, leading to the imposition of the Emergency; the habeas corpus case where the Supreme Court declared that during an emergency there is no right to life or liberty and hence no recourse against illegal detention; and the parliament attack case in which the Supreme Court, while acquitting Shaukat Guru of all charges of conspiracy, convicted him on a charge for which he was never accused. Together, they offer a broad perspective of the evolution of Indian law and the interpretation of the Constitution. Courting Destiny affords us a glimpse of the many fundamental and far-reaching political and constitutional changes that took place in the decades following independence. The descriptions of Shanti Bhushan’s brief involvement in party politics and his time as law minister in the post-Emergency Janata government make for a fascinating insider’s account of an important phase of the nation’s life. In this narration of the author’s life and work, the personal, the professional and the public unfold seamlessly, never at the cost of one or the other. Written in a direct and engaging style, laced with gentle humour, Courting Destiny will appeal to all those interested in India’s legal, constitutional and political history. At a time when both the Bar and the Bench are under a cloud, the illustrious sixty-year career of Shanti Bhushan will be a source of inspiration for young advocates. Gandhi Meets Primetime: Globalization and Nationalism in Indian Television
University of Illinois Press; Urbana and Chicago, USA; 2006; 0252072448; First Edition; Paperback; New; 15 x 23 Cm
Shanti Kumar's Ghandi Meets Primetime examines how cultural imaginations of national identity have been transformed by the rapid growth of satellite and cable television in postcolonial India. To evaluate the growing influence of foreign and domestic satellite and cable channels since 1991, the book considers a wide range of materials including contemporary television programming, historical archives, legal documents, policy statements, academic writings and journalistic accounts. Kumar argues that India's hybrid national identity is manifested in the discourses found in this variety of empirical sources. He deconstructs representations of Mahatma Gandhi as the Father of the Nation on the state-sponsored network Doordarshan and those found on Rupert Murdoch's STAR TV network. The book closely analyzes print advertisements to trace the changing status of the television set as a cultural commodity in postcolonial India and examines publicity brochures, promotional materials and programming schedules of Indian-language networks to outline the role of vernacular media in the discourse of electronic capitalism. The empirical evidence is illuminated by theoretical analyses that combine diverse approaches such as cultural studies, poststructuralism and postcolonial criticism. Though the scholars in the country have tried to trace the genesis of the Ramayana from the Vedic and post-Vedic literature, with the fragments of the story of Rama found scattered in these texts, but the most important job in the composition of the story of Rama was done by the sage Valmiki, who happened to be the foremost of the Indian Sanskrit poets. He composed the work on the basis of the brief of Rama's story provided to him by the sage Narada, as well as the fragments of the story collected by him with the extensive travelling of the country which immensely added to its popularity with the masses. After the sage Valmiki, several subsequent poets brought out Ramayana texts in Sanskrit as well as in the regional languages. The work composed by Madhava Kandali in Assamese language happens to be one of the earliest works of medieval period, having been composed in the fourteenth century AD. The Ramayana of Krttivasa was composed in the fifteenth century, while the Ramacaritamanasa by Tulasidasa in the sixteenth century AD. The work of Madhava Kandali was composed on the basis of the Valmiki Ramayana, though some variations are noticed here and there. The present work is an English translation of the Madhava Kandali Ramayana in Assamese. Printed Pages: 600. 022163
