Constraints in Phonological Acquisition
Cambridge University Press; Cambridge, UK; 2004; 0521829631; First Edition; Hard Cover; New; New; 228 x 152 Mm
This outstanding volume presents a state-of-the-art overview of linguistic research into the acquisition of phonology. Bringing together well-known researchers in the field, it focuses on constraints in phonological acquisition (as opposed to rules), and offers concrete examples of the formalization of phonological development in terms of constraint ranking. The first two chapters situate the research in its broader context, with an introduction by the editors providing a brief general tutorial on Optimality Theory. Chapter two serves to highlight the history of constraints in studies of phonological development, which predates their current ascent to prominence in phonological theory. The remaining chapters address a number of partially overlapping themes: the study of child production data in terms of constraints, learnability issues, perceptual development and its relation to the development of production, and second language acquisition. • Overview of state-of-the-art research in phonological acquisition • Contributions by well-known researchers (Hayes, Jusczyk, Menn, Prince, Smolensky, Tesar) • Introduction offers a bird’s eye view of research leading up to current situation Contents List of contributors; Preface; 1. Introduction René Kager, Joe Pater and Wim Zonneveld; 2. Saving the baby: making sure that old data survive new theories Lise Menn; 3. The Shaping of Art History in Finland
Bookstore Tiedekirja; Finland; 2007; 9525533085; New;
The first major conference on the history of art historical research in Finland was arranged in October 2005. The conference committee decided to concentrate mainly on early professionals in the field and on their interpretations of art. As art research in Finland is a young field with few researchers, the result has been the marked personification of the whole field, with different generations of researchers focusing on only a few influential figures. They operated simultaneously in many different roles, shaping views on what was good art both nationally and internationally. The study and analysis of their art discourse will also shape our understanding of how and why their story of art was told to Finns and international colleagues. Printed Pages: 239. 114301

Disability and Society: A Reader
Orient BlackSwan; New Delhi, India; 2009; 8125036865; First Edition; Paperback; New; 14 x 22 Cm
In the 1980’s disabled scholars in the West began to develop a radical critique of biomedical conceptions of disability that focused exclusively on the individual body and its limitations. They also exposed the failure of the social sciences to critically address what this medical understanding of disability meant, and what it excluded from consideration. Out of their work emerged what is generally called the ‘social model’ of disability. Over the past twenty years this perspective has generated a substantial literature, much of it making use of the methods of qualitative social research. Narratives and life histories produced by disabled people themselves have a central place in the Disability Studies literature. This work has major implications for professionals in the rehabilitation field, for the social sciences, and the ultimate goal, for the full integration of disabled people into society. However almost all of if focuses on the traditions, practices and dilemmas of northern countries. In India, in Thailand and in most of Asia, the field of disability continues to be dominated by the biomedical model. Thus, ‘disability’ is understood as an incurable chronic illness and, increasingly, an object for medical diagnosis and investigation. Despite many positive developments, little convergence between disability politics and practice on the one hand, and sociology and anthropology on the other has taken place. Surveying the international literature on disability and rehabilitation, it becomes apparent that many studies carried out in Asian countries are designed to measure the extent of (unmet) need or the impact of services or attitudes to disabled people. Virtually no studies make use of the innovative, usually qualitative and often holistic approaches developed in Western countries over the past twenty years. This book introduces readers in Asian countries to the recent disability literature of the West. The editors hope that it will inspire new thinking among social scientist, rehabilitation professionals and organizations of disabled people themselves that could further the empowerment of people with disabilities. Empathy: Theory and Application in Psychotherapy
D.K. Printworld (P) Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2014; 812460729X; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New; 23 x 29 Cm
Empathy is a term much used in popular culture and professional circles. Yet it remains one of the most misunderstood tropes. Most people confuse or conflate empathy with sympathy; though related, these involve somewhat radically different affective or psychological registers. Empathy is founded on the art of understanding a living being's particular mental state or inner condition, in respect of his/her predicament, pain, suffering, anguish, fear, grief, sorrow, frustration, and anger in certain trying circumstances. There can even be comportment with another's joy and exhilaration. Its proper use makes possible a much deeper understanding of human communication, relation, intentionality, and action. As such its cognate in the Eastern or contemplative practice of compassion (karuna, metta, kripa) toward another, and also to sorge or “care” in phenomenological hermeneutics. Thus, there are cognitive, affective and ethical components in the practice of empathy. The importance of empathy whether in everyday life or as a clinical tool in therapeutic and palliative settings cannot be more emphasized. The book demonstrates the way in which using empathy as a means of diagnosis leads to different, more successful results and course of action. In so doing, the study challenges the erstwhile neglect and misconception of the role of empathy in transference and introspective processes availed in psychoanalysis. The book introduces novices in the field to the rich literature of psychoanalysis and philosophy, combining conceptual phenomenology with empirical data collected in a clinical setting. Testing the theory against clinical cases, as the book engages with, lends itself to a more solid conceptualization that can be poignantly articulated and studied further. The book will benefit students and practitioners in counselling, social work, psychiatry, psychoanalysis, psychotherapy and philosophy.Printed Pages: 135. 100321

Boundless as the Sky: His Holiness the Dalai Lama on Happiness, Faith and Love
Penguin/TBI; New Delhi, India; 0143421166; Softcover; New;
"How a person thinks, behaves and feels ultimately impacts not just their own lives, but the society they live in. If we desire to attain happiness, we must understand that the journey begins within us, and can reach out to touch millions. In this anthology, His Holiness the Dalai Lama, with characteristic wisdom, humour and kindness, directs us towards the path to a happy, healthy, peaceful life. Talking about universal themes such as compassion, peace, non-violence, secularism and the pursuit of a healthy mind and body, he reminds us that the responsibility to change our thoughts, actions and lives lies with us. Once we accept ownership of every aspect of our lives, we can then begin to catalyse change in the lives of others and, through that process, change the world. Through these speeches and dialogues, His Holiness encourages each individual to embrace the path of happiness, compassion and faith." Printed Pages: 232. 113095

The Path of the Buddha: Writings on Contemporary Buddhism
Penguin; New Delhi, India; 2004; 014303037X; First Edition; Paperback; New; New; 13 Cms x 20 Cms
So compelling is the story of Prince Siddhartha Gautama that it loses none of its sheen with a retelling. Impelled by a desire to deal with the sorrows of human existence, he renounces the world when barely twenty-nine and finds Buddhism. Giving Buddha’s spiritual journey a contemporary dimension, this anthology contains essays by spiritual leaders like His Holiness the Dalai Lama, Lama Zopa Rinpoche and Lama Thubten Yeshe on the impact of Buddhist philosophy on them. Equally poignant are the accounts of others who, dissatisfied with the present world, embark on a search for salvation. Urged by a seemingly simple notion, Donna Brown starts her quest to find a really ‘good’ person; a journey which takes her from the heart of Canada to Nepal’s remote Kopan monastery. An inexplicable restlessness takes Robina Courtin from dabbling in drugs, political activism and martial arts to finding truth as a Buddhist nun. Though born into a Sikh family, Dharmakirti grows up in Sikkim amidst Buddhist monasteries, maroon-robed monks and monastic rituals, and eventually chooses the philosophy of Tibetan Buddhism over science. For Kabir Saxena, Buddhism offers a practical path in this broken, imperfect world. Varied and meaningful, The Path of the Buddha provides a rare glimpse into Buddhism. Printed Pages: 248. 002778

World Trade Development Report 2007: Building a Development-Friendly World Trading System
Oxford University Press; New Delhi, India; 2007; 0195689682; First Edition; Hard Cover; New; New;
The recent collapse of the Doha Round talks, especially after such failures as the Ministerial Conferences in Seattle (1999) and Cancun (2003), suggests that all is not well with the present system of multilateral trade negotiations. In particular, developing countries feel that these negotiations are occasions used by industrialized countries to extract trade concessions from them and shrink their development policy space. Although the Doha Round was launched as a Development Round, the emerging patterns in the negotiations suggest that development was just the rhetoric to get a mandate for the launch of negotiations. As a result there has been little progress on developmental issues. The emerging trends and asymmetries in the multilateral trading system and the growing discontent among poor countries do not bode well for its sustainability. Research and Information System for Developing Countries (RIS), argues in this report that as weaker partners the developing countries have a stake in the multilateral rule-based trading system. However, the processes of agenda-setting and rule-making are heavily dominated by developed countries. The challenge before developing countries therefore is to seek reforms to ensure that the system serves their needs better. The report proposes an agenda for building a more development-friendly and sustainable trading system. It offers recommendations from a development perspective for revitalizing the Doha Round of trade talks in key areas of agriculture, market access for industrial goods, services, trade facilitation, intellectual property rights, and dispute settlement rules among others. It further highlights the potential of strengthening South-South Cooperation for building a development-friendly trading system. 019710

The probability of non-state actors acquiring and using weapons of mass destruction against vulnerable non-combatants have remained a worrisome threat since the turn of the century. Folk-Tales of Kashmir
Low Price Publications/D.K. Publishers Distributors Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2004; 8175363460; Hardcover; New; New;
Folk-tale is a subject which requires the most dainty treatment and the careful analysis. Most folk-lorists find it as a source to analysis the practices, ideas and beliefs of the people of ancient and middle ages. In those days fables was popular as it was adopted as medium of instruction. It is believed that an apposite or well-told story would arouse attention where logical arguement or abstract reasoning would fail to produce the slightest effect. These fictitious narratives with their moral and religious applications had a very considerable influence upon the literature of those days.Some folk-lorists believe that several tales must be attributed to a mythological origin, but some others believe that many tales must be attributed to historical origin. However, whatsoever the nature of treating the folk-lores, India has abundance of popular folk-lores in its credit, among which the stature of Kashmir is unparallel. Perhaps, Kashmir has not been surpassed in fertility by any other country in the world. But, for centuries the great treasure of these fairy tales of Kashmir had remained unknown to the rest of the world due to its isolated position and difficulty of language.This book attempts to unveil the treasure of fairy-tales that was very popular among the natives of the country. As the author points out, many of the tales in this collection are purely Kashmiri in origin, while others are undoubtedly variants of popular tales current in India and other parts of the world, which have been adopted and modified to suit the language, style of thought and social usage of the country.Indeed, it's a book of rare-kind that will draw the attention of all readers of all age group. Settlements in the Yamuna-Hindon Doab: An Archaeological Perspective
B.R. Publishing Corporation; New Delhi, India; 2003; 8176463582; Hardcover; New; New;
The Book Settlements in the Yamuna-Hindon Doab : An Archaeological Perspective reveals the settlement pattern of the Yamuna-Hindon Doab : From the protohistoric to the early historic period. However, the Gupta, post-Gupta and medieval sites that were brought to light during the study have also been given adequate consideration and significance. The present work fills some of the gaps that are faced in the reconstruction of ancient past created by the absence of horizontal excavations. Against a background of the history of the area, the study meticulously weaves together evidences from ancient mounds pottery, sculpture, monuments, references in literature, legend, and folklore to reconstruct a comprehensive and lively historical narrative. This work, written in a lucid and expressive style, is accompanied by several maps, analytical data, a large number of pottery illustrations and photographs, References, Appendix and Index. The book will be of special interest to scholars and students of Ancient Indian History, Culture and Archaeology. Contents:- Preface 1. Introduction 2. The Ecological Settings of the Yamuna-Hindon Doab 3. A Survey of Archaeological Research in the Yamuna-Hindon Doab 4. Yamuna-Hindon Doab ? A Micro Settlement Assessment 5. The World of the Ploughwoman: Folklore and Reality in Matriarchal Northwest Spain (Folklore Fellows Communications 254)
Suomalainen Tiedeakatemia (Academia Scientiarum Fennica)/Bookstore Tiedekirja; Helsinki, Finland; 1994; 9514107462; Hardcover; New; New;
This study is a contribution to the discussion of folklore as a mirror of society. Spanish Galicia offers a special opportunity for examining wellknown folktales in a different context because of the cultural and economic dominance of women and the matriarchal life style which characterized the region until recently. That matriarchy was deeprooted in Galicia and did not result from male migration in modern times, is demonstrated in the historical chapters of the book, while the anthropological chapters (on family systems, work patterns, matriarchal ideology, sexual behaviour, religion and magic) tend to show that all aspects of Galician culture have been “canonized” in folklore; folklore therefore must have gone through radical changes in order to conform with the local ideology. While the women in Galician folktales almost always appear in active and aggressive hero roles, this has nothing to do with “wishful thinking” or “poetic fiction”, for according to the matriarchal concept it is just the natural order of things. Surely the correlation demonstrated here between the social structure, gender roles, and ideology may also be observed in male-dominated societes, once we learn to disengage from the patriarchal concept of the “natural order of things”. Gods in Chains
Foundation Books; New Delhi, India; 8175962852; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New;
The book hopes to highlight the conditions of captive elephants, as they are currently used and kept in India. Initially started as an informal documentation, Gods in Chains later expanded to become a ‘handbook of sorts’, for anyone wanting to know more of the reality behind the veil of glamour and majesty of the captive pachyderm, especially in temple rituals and festival processions. The often troubled and complex relationship with their only companion, the ‘mahout’, is also a story of pathos and heartbreak for a deeply social and community-minded animal. Key features * This book hopes to open a chapter in the process of devising and implementing better management and welfare practices for captive elephants. * It is an easy guide for students, policymakers, animal welfarists, beaurocrats and every individual who would like to make a difference in the lives of these great wild creatures, with whom humans have forged a deep and abiding relationship. * This book was commissioned by the Wildlife Rescue and Rehabilitation Centre (WRRC) and Compassion Unlimited Plus Action (CUPA) in an attempt to encapsulate the ‘living and training conditions of captive elephants’. It offers an insight into the inherent problems of the existing system. The WRRC is an Indian wildlife conservation group and CUPA is an animal welfare charity, both located in Bangalore, Karnataka. * The book has given various practical recommendations that need to be strictly implemented by all the agencies if this goal is to be achieved. The WRRC’s dream would be to assist the Government in the formation of an elephant sanctuary someday, where these magnificent animals could roam in protected areas set aside for them. Enriching the Sociological Imagination
Aakar Books; New Delhi, India; 9789350024362; Softcover; New;
This book presents classical articles influencing the field that appeared in The Insurgent Sociologist, along with current reflections by the original authors. These selections reflect radical sociology's continuing interest in capitalist development, class, race, gender, and power. The Introduction contextualizes the role of The Insurgent Sociologist in the development of a radical sociology and its impact on the discipline. The conclusion provides an agenda for how the next version of critical sociology should relate to and strengthen the heterogeneous world of civil society. Never have so many prominent sociologists provided such a rare intellectual treat by being so frank about their own past work, and then suggest how we can do better in the future to provide frameworks for a critical and relevant sociology. An Interreligious Approach to a Social Ethic for Christian Audiences
Christian World Imprints/B.R. Publishing Corporation; New Delhi, India; 2017; 9789351481881; Hardcover; New; New;
Through the lens of a Christian minister, immersed in the global interfaith movement and trained in the discipline of religious philosophy, this book develops a social ethic that is based on function. By using the concept of a functional paradigm, the book explores the way religious language works to create subjective mental states. These mental states represent various degrees of truth for the adherents, but due to their subjective nature, the truths cannot be objectively verified. This results in conflicting truth claims by religious adherents from different religious traditions. However, because the truth claims function in the various traditions to teach social values, function and morality are areas in which common ground can be found and explored. 27476 Richard B. Eaton; Introduction By Jonathan David, Normal England, and John Keenan
Building Construction Drawing
Donhead Publishing Ltd; Dorset, UK; 2004; 1873394713; First Edition; Hard Cover; Brand New; 19 x 28 Cm
First published in six parts in the period 1914 to 1921 this volume has now been reprinted to provide a useful sourcebook for architects and other conservation specialists working on traditional buildings. This was one of the first books to include specifications and working drawings of joinery details, drawn on a large scale, which complemented the earlier better known construction ‘pattern books ’ of the nineteenth and early twentieth century. The book covers a wide range of details, with particular emphasis on joinery, including windows, doors, staircases, panelling, picture and chair rails, and architraves but also covering brick and tile floors, chimney heads, yard gates, and an example of a roof for a small house. These will be of particular relevance to the maintenance of buildings constructed between 1900 and 1939. The Bhakti Sect of Vallabhacarya
Munshiram Manoharlal Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 1986; 81-215-0576-1; Second Edition; Cloth; New; New; 14 Cms x 22 Cms
One of the foremost leaders of the devotional revolution which swept through Hindu society in the 15th and 16th centuries was Vallabhacarya. In terms of religion, Vallabhacarya's main contribution was his demonstration of the way in which a human being can shed his or her limited, mortal ego in order to rediscover an eternal individual participation in an unlimited divine being. With regard to literature, some of the earliest prose writing in any form of Hindi was produced by Vallabhacarya's followers in the Caurasi Vaisnavan ki Varta, a collection of accounts of personal efforts to apply the teachings of Vallabhacarya to everyday life. The first part of the Bhakti Sect of Vallabhacarya deals with Vallabhacarya's life and with his establishment of an organisation for his followers, a philosophical system to explain his view of the world and a spiritual method for putting his teachings into practice. The second part of the book is made up of an English translation of the sections of the Caurasi Vaisnavan ki Varta describing the lives of four early disciples of Vallabhacarya, one of whom was the poet Suradasa. Democracy and Decentralisation in South Asia and West Africa: Participation, Accountability and Performance
Cambridge University Press; New Delhi, India; 0521636477; First Edition; Paperback; New;
This book is a study of whether setting up democratic local councils in four developing countries (Ghana, Cote d`Ivoire, Bangladesh and India) actually makes any difference to the popularity, responsiveness and effectiveness of local government and administration. The authors make an important contribution to current debates about `good governance` and whether decentralisation can provide better services for the mass of the population - the poor and the disadvantaged in rural areas. The book is comparative, and based on detailed local fieldwork and popular surveys. Contents 1. Introduction 2. India (Karnataka) 3. Bangladesh 4. Cote d`Ivoire 5. Ghana 6. Conclusions. Munshiram Manoharlal Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 1997; 8121507715; Reprint; Cloth; New; New; 14 Cms x 22 Cms
Sind Revisited is an account of Sind and is a unique work by the indefatigable Richard Burton. Having visited Sind more than once and with his keen observation, Richard Burton has provided much useful information about this very ancient land in his own inimitable style. The description of places and people inhabiting the "Young Egypt"-the nick name applied to Sind-the legends and myths, history, society and social mores, religious beliefs, politics and of course, the ruins which Sind abounds in, food habits, the Anglo-Indian army, railroads and several other subjects are narrated in the distinctive style of the author. His remarks on the character of the inhabitants and their peculiar traits as well as idiosyncrasies make interesting reading. The incidents recorded in the book are marked by wit and humor so very characteristics of Richard Burton, the versatile raconteur. Conveniently bound together, the two volumes of Sind Revisited should interest students of history as well as those who are fond of travelling in the past. Printed pages: 692. 022782

Sindh and the Races that Inhabit the Valley of the Indus: with notices of the topography and history of the Province
Munshiram Manoharlal Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 1998; 8121508231; Reprint; Cloth; New; New; 14 Cms x 22 Cms
The present work is the culmination of Richard Burton's five-years stay in Sindh, where he had the opportunity to learn the manner and customs, the domestic details, and the religious opinions and language of the people among, and with whom, he lived. He found the previous descriptions of Sindh and its inhabitants of little use; they were either too popular in nature, or written with a view of imparting a superficial knowledge of the language. Richard Burton has narrated in this work long descriptions of the studies, religion and ceremonies peculiar to the race inhabiting Sindh, the first specimens of language, and notices of the literature ever printed, and also the first detailed account of native habits and customs, manner and ceremonies. This work would be useful to not only linguists, ethnographers, and historians but also general readers who are fond of travelling in the past. Printed Pages: 430 with 1 map. 029207

How Buddhism Began: The Conditioned Genesis of the Early Teachings
Munshiram Manoharlal Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2014; 8121508126; Reprint; Hardcover; New; New; 15 x 23
This book takes a fresh look at the earliest Buddhist texts and offers various suggestions how the teachings in them had developed. Two themes predominate; firstly, it argues that we cannot understand the Buddha unless we understand that he was debating with other religious teachers, notably Brahmins. For example, he denied the existence of a "soul"; but what exactly was he denying? Another chapter suggests that the canonical story of the Buddha's encounter with a brigand who wore a garland of his victims' fingers probably reflects an encounter with a form of ecstatic religion. The other main theme concerns metaphor, allegory and literalism. By taking the words of the texts literally-despite the Buddha's warning not to-successive generations of his disciples created distinctions and developed doctrines far beyond his original intention. One chapter shows how this led to a scholastic categorisation of meditation. Failure to understand a basic metaphor also gave rise to the later argument between the Mahayana and the older tradition. Perhaps most important of all, a combination of literalism with ignorance of the Buddha's allusions to Brahmanism led Buddhists to forget that the Buddha had preached that love, like Christian charity, could itself be directly salvific.
