Handbook of Agriculture in India
Oxford University Press; New Delhi, India; 2007; 019568673X; First Edition; Hard Cover; New; New;
India's agricultural growth in the twentieth century has been low compared to that in other developing countries. However, there have been some important developments in the agricultural sector in this period. Famines have all but disappeared and there is now a food surplus. The green revolution too increased yield and productivity for certain crops in specific agro-climatic zones. Having said that, a lot still needs to be done. While agricultural growth has contributed to significant decline in poverty, India still remains home to the largest number of poor. Agricultural productivity remains low in much of the rain fed areas where poverty and malnutrition are concentrated. Land productivity is also declining in areas which are over-irrigated. Agricultural growth must be restarted, and the benefits more fairly distributed. This timely handbook reviews key issues in Indian agriculture today. Individual contributors assess: The state of Indian agriculture in relation to state and central economic policies and their impact on the economic and societal environment The need to shift focus from green revolution areas to other regions and crops in the context of globalization and even distribution of the benefits achieved Food security, not only at the national but also at the regional, household, and group levels Contemporary issues relating to poverty and agricultural subsidies Emerging issue of the changing agrarian system and rural urban linkages 019715

27506 Shrabani Basu (Author) M.R.D. Foot (Frwd)
Spy Princess: The Life of Noor Inayat Khan
Lotus/Roli Books; New Delhi, India; 8174366148; Softcover; New;
On 13 September 1944, Noor Inayat Khan, the first female wireless operator to be flown into occupied France, was shot at Dachau. The descendant of Tipu Sultan, the Tiger of Mysore, Noor was born in Moscow and raised in the Sufi style of Islam. From this unlikely background, she became the only Asian secret agent in Europe in World War II, was one of three women in the SOE to be awarded the George Cross and the Croix de Guerre. Shrabani Basu's new book tells the full story of this extraordinarily heroic woman. Noor was brought up in France and Britain and joined the Red Cross when World War II broke out. In Britain, Noor trained as a wireless operator before being recruited by the SOE. Such was the urgent demand for radio operators that she was sent to France before her training was completed. Working under the code name of Madeleine, she joined a group that sabotaged communication lines. But disaster struck quickly and, within days, her circuit collapsed and her colleagues were arrested. Though instructed by her controller, the famous Maurice Buckmaster, to return home, she refused to abandon her post as she was the last radio operator left in Paris. For a time, she successfully dodged the Gestapo, but by late 1943 her luck had run out. She was betrayed, arrested and imprisoned at Avenue Foch. Undaunted, she made two dramatic escape attempts, but was recaptured and sent to Germany. Here she was interrogated and tortured and finally sent to Dachau, where she was shot. The Germans had learned nothing from her - not even her real name. Printed Pages: 218. 108561

27509 Shree Ghatage
Bharma's Dream
Roli Books; New Delhi, India; 2006; 818693927X; Third Impression; Paperback; New; 8.5 x 5.5 Inches
Born with a rare form of anaemia, thirteen-year-old Mohini is not expected to live beyond the age of three. Mohini's condition and her impending, inevitable death is the pivot around which the characters of Brahma's Dream live out their lives. But, instead of tragedy, it is humour, the fascinating detail of events as they unfold and, ultimately, the wry and heart-warming wisdom of the girl at the centre of the story that absorbs and envelops the reader. Set in Bombay in the forties, at the defining moment when India emerged from British rule, Brahma's Dream is as much the story of a nation on the move, as of a Maharastrian family that is forward-thinking and ready to embrace the new order, while holding on to the traditions it holds dear. Far from wallowing in self-pity, Mohini is both an astute observer and an active participant in all that goes on in the Oek household. Her parents, Keshav and Kamala, share a passionate love that is at first rent asunder and then, amazingly, healed, by their daughter's illness. Her young aunt, Vasanti, condemned to an early widowhood that no astrologer foretold, believes that there is a reason for this. Mohini's grandfather, Vishnupant, is the patriarch who rules Koleshwar Nivas with a firm and compassionate hand, a professor of history who has devoted his life to making sense of India's past so that the country may fulfil the promise of its future. And, as India surges towards independence, Mohini's family and friends look to her to help make sense and assign meaning to a rapidly changing world. A remarkable debut novel that succeeds in being hugely entertaining and immensely moving, Brahma's Dream explores the Hindu belief that birth, suffering and death are all but a part of a vast continuum in the mind of a god. History of Bihar 1740-1772
Munshiram Manoharlal Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 1970; 8121503825; First Edition; Hard Cover; New; New; 15 Cms x 23 Cms
During the reign of Aurangzeb, Bihar had the status of an independent administrative unit of the Mughal Empire. The Bihar governors then were in no way subordinate to the governors of Bengal. After Fakhr-ud-Dowla, its last independent governor, Bihar was, however, annexed to the Bengal Suba and it remained as an appanage of Bengal thereafter for about 200 years (1733 to 1912). The battle of Giria in 1740 made Alivardi the undisputed ruler of Bengal and Bihar, and was succeeded by Siraj-ud-Dowla in 1765. The period between 1757 and 1765 was marked by the growth of the British influence in Bengal and Bihar also was thereby exposed to the same influence. The leading officers and Zamindars of Bihar were, however, not prepared to accept the new challenge: they opposed to the English dominance over Bihar and fought single-handedly against the English before allowing Bihar to go the Bengal way. After the receipt of Clive, of the Diwani Grant over Bengal, Bihar and Orissa on August 12, 1765 from Shah Alam II, the unfortunate and shadowy Emperor of Delhi, the East India Company got a definite legal status in the system of the Mughal Empire and another phase of Bihari resistance began. During the period when Raja Shitab Roy was the Naib Nizam of Bihar the Zamindars of Seres and Cotomba and Maharajah Fatah Sahi of Husainpur, fought against the company's troops but they lost against heavy odds. The author has described these various Bihari resistances and also the company's exploits in Bihar prior to their acceptance of direct responsibility for the administration of the province in 1772 after the infamous Bengal famine of 1770. Mahayana Tantra: An Introduction
Penguin; New Delhi, India; 2002; 0143028537; First Edition; Paperback; New; New; 13 Cms x 20 Cms
Tantra, considered by many as a dangerous and secret path, invariably generates a tremendous amount of curiosity. In this, the first comprehensive book of its kind, Shri Dharmakirti gives us a rare glimpse into the fascinating nature of Tantra. A practitioner of the Mahayana Buddhist Tantra uses his intellect and moral discipline to attain Buddha-hood, the highest state of existence. How to achieve this state was first shown by the Buddha and, after him, by various incarnations of Indian and Tibetan gurus such as the Dalai Lama. The author gives us a detailed account of the moral, ethical and philosophical basis of Buddhist Tantra. He also shows how the Buddhist Tantric Path of the Highest Secret Mantra decisively addresses the three crucial problems that every genuine spiritual warrior must resolve¾ problems of death, sexuality and the true nature of reality. The author discusses various facets of the Buddhist Tantric Path: its history, its harnessing of sexual energy to access subtle levels of reality, the doctrine of Karma, the concept of profound emptiness that is the philosophical core of the Buddha Dharma, and the Wheel of Existence or the Bhava-Chakra. Narrated simply and enriched with visual representations of the author’s vision of Tantra, this is an invaluable guide for those seeking a meaningful spiritual path. Printed Pages: 198. 014108

The Shabdajyotsna of Pandit Bhiksharam: A New Sahskrit Grammer
D.K. Printworld (P) Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2013; 8124606625; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New; 15 x 23 Cm
Pt. Bihiksharam (1887–1975) composed the Shabdajyotsna with a view to teach Sanskrit grammar to an ordinary student in a simple style. The author adopts pratyahara, anuvritti, anubandha, etc. in his work to impart the abridgement on the pattern of Ashtadhyayi and Pratishakhyas. For this purpose, the author tries his best to simplify the tough process of learning Sanskrit grammar. The sutras of the Shabdajyotsna are composed subject wise (according to prakarana) on the pattern of prakriya works. Only samjna- and sandhi-prakaranas of this work were published in 1958. The rest of the text in Devanagari remained in the form of manuscript lying unattended. The script, whatever traced, was made available to Prof. Shri Krishan Sharma for the editing purposes by his grandson. However, the samasa-prakarana and some portions of taddhita-prakarana still remain untraceable. In spite of some minor gaps, the work deserves recognition and appreciation in the academic circle. The author of the Shabdajyotsna aimed at and indeed succeeded in fully exposing the rules of Sanskrit grammar in lucid and clear diction. The work, a pioneering attempt of its kind, may very well be considered as a significant contribution to the tradition of Sanskrit grammar, benefiting students, teachers and researchers alike.Printed Pages: 127. 100489

Vedas: The Source of Ultimate Science
Nag Publishers; Delhi, India; 2005; 8170816181; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New;
The purpose of this Book is to propagate Vedic thoughts throughout the world and improving the image of modern Science by showing that there is an essential harmony the spirit of Vedic WISDOM and Modern Science. This book is An Introduction to the studies of Vedic Literature in light of scientific approach. All the new truths emerging out of 20'h century through scientific discoveries have pushed science from the domain of matter to the realm of philosophy and specially the philosophy of consciousness as discovered by Vedic Rishis. Parallelism in Vedic thoughts and Modern Science has been shown in this book. The intention of drawing parallelism in Vedic thoughts and Modern Science is not to show that every thing of modern science has been understood in the past by intutions, but just to indicate that there are other methods of thinking to arrive at generalities in much the same way.This book in its eleven chapters aims at the latest explorations in different branches of science to show how science is increasingly .approaching the conclusions of the Vedic Literature. The central idea of this book is to interconnect between the picture of universe as viewed by a modern physicist and by a practitioner of Indian philosophical system and a Vedic scholar.Vedas are like a deep ocean, full of precious jewels; and whosoever dares to plunge deep into it brings out his/her wants. Everything is available here, but in concise form. The Author believes that religions of the world play a positive role for establishing world peace through inter-faith dialogue and science-religion dialogue, which is the need of the hour.Printed Pages: 480. 103944

Perspectives on Maharashtra: Cultural-Intellectual Contributions (History of Science, Philosophy and Culture in Indian Civilization, Volume VI, Part 8)
Munshiram Manoharlal Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2013; 8187586621; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New; 23 x 29 Cm
The volumes of the PROJECT ON THE HISTORY OF SCIENCE, PHILOSOPHY AND CULTURE IN INDIAN CIVILIZATION aim at discovering the main aspects of India's heritage and present them in an interrelated way. These volumes in spite of their unitary look recognize the difference between the areas of material civilization and those of ideational culture. The Project is not being executed by a single group of thinkers and writers who are methodologically uniform or ideologically identical in their commitments. In fact contributions are made by different scholars with different ideological persuasions and methodological approaches. The Project is marked by what may be called 'methodological pluralism'. In spite of its primarily historical character, this Project, both in its conceptualization and execution, has been shaped by scholars drawn from different disciplines. It is for the first time that an endeavour of such a unique and comprehensive character has been undertaken to study critically a major world civilization like India. Maharashtra, as the present State, came into existence on 1 May 1960. This volume presents the story of glorious past, going back to nearly two thousand years, and the vibrant present. During the ancient period Maharashtra was ruled by important dynasties like the Mauryas, Satavahanas (when Indo-Roman trade flourished), Vakatakas, Chalukyas, Rashtrakutas (known for contributing to art and architecture), Kalachuris, Shilaharas and Yadavas. The medieval period witnessed the arrival of the Khiljis, other Muslims dynasties and the spread of Islam, the rise of Shivaji and his fight for Hinadavi Svaraja, and the rule of the Peshwas. It was the end of the rule of the Peshwas by the British and the arrival of other Europeans that heralds the 'modern period'. The volume also covers in detail accounts of socio-religious activities and reforms, including movements for the emancipation of the 'depressed' classes and the Dalits, spearheaded by Babasaheb Ambedkar and Mahatma Gandhi. The volume is divided into six parts: I. Geography and History; II. Culture, Art and Architecture; III. Impact of other Languages on the Culture of Maharashtra; IV. Impact of other Religions on the Culture of Maharashtra; V. Education, Society, Language and Literature; VI. Philosophy. The various contributions in this volume by eminent scholars explore the interface of heterogeneous influences that have contributed to a unique synthesis of cultures that is the face of Maharashtra today. Presidential Legislation in India: The Law and Practice of Ordinances
Cambridge University Press; New Delhi, India; 2013; 1107444349; Softcover; New;
India has a parliamentary system. Yet the president has authority to occasionally enact legislation (or ordinances) without involving parliament. This book is a study of ordinances at the national level in India centered around three themes. Firstly how an artifact of British constitutional history over time became part of India's legislative system. Secondly how when and why presidents resorted to ordinances in post-independent India. Thirdly it analyzes a range of ordinance-related questions including some that are yet to be judicially adjudicated. In the process it explains why much of the Indian Supreme Court's analyses are mistaken and what should take its place. The book explains why the fate of parliamentary reforms may be tied to the reform of this provision for ordinances. Standing at the intersection of constitutional law and political science Presidential Legislation in India offers a new frame through which to understand executive's legislative powers both in parliamentary and presidential systems.Printed Pages: 278. 101449

I am big So What!?
Fingerprint/Prakash Books; New Delhi, India; 2016; 817599343X; Softcover; New;
Is it only in India where people don’t realize that starting a conversation with, “Oh, you’ve put on weight!” is incredibly rude? Perhaps I should respond with “Oh, you’ve become uglier!” so they get the point. From stores that do not stock clothes my size to unsolicited advice from neighbourhood aunties, my life—quite annoyingly—is ruled by the numbers on the scale. What’s the big deal about being big? You may wonder. Well, quite a lot, actually. For starters, you get dumped by the only man you’ve ever loved, social situations go from awkward to embarrassing within seconds, and don’t even get me started on the family’s never-ending search for a suitable groom. They just don’t make men my size these days! Nevertheless, here I am, about to meet Suitor No. 7. Begrudgingly, of course. Ride along as I navigate the crazy arranged marriage market. And trust me, it’s crazier when you’re more than a little curvy. Printed Pages: 200. 107594

Political Thought in Action: The Bhagavad Gita and Modern India
Cambridge University Press; New Delhi, India; 2013; 1107033950; Hardcover; New; New;
This volume brings together a group of intellectual and social historians to discuss the way in which modern interpretations of the Gita have focused on war and violence rather than peace and stability as a site for thinking about politics. The essays gathered here look at the Gita as a philosophical and ethical text both within South Asia and also on its ‘outward journey’ into western political debate. Though part of an ancient epic tradition the Gita did not achieve its current eminence until very recently. Its resurgence and reinterpretation in short is coterminous with the formation of modern life and politics. But if modern commentaries on the Bhagavad Gita cannot be described simply as participating in some ancient and continuing tradition neither should they be seen merely as the epiphenomena of an abstraction like capitalism that supposedly constitutes the true reality of Indian society. This set of essays seeks to intervene in current debates within political thought and intellectual history and to offer new perspectives on both. They do so with the presumption that the place of India and its political thought is instructive for and foundational in the making of the national and post-national global order. The book would be of interest to academic researchers as well as general readers interested in South Asian History Indian philosophy and religion.Printed Pages: 220. 101433

Munshiram Manoharlal Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2002; 8121510562; Reprint; Paperback; New; New; 14 Cms x 22 Cms
This book portrays the Hindu view of life in its totality-Its origin, its growth, its decay, its eternity. It surveys the different schools of thought in East and West-beginning with human belief in the Unseen, down to religious rites and the birth of materialism. It analyses over 500 ancient texts (each translated into lucid prose) to justify the Hindu cults of immortality, karma, transmigration of souls and image-worship. It underlines the fundamentals of physical science as found delineated in the early Vedic texts, and projects the Hindu concept of cosmic and bio-consciousness, their relation to Space-Time Continuum and the Supreme. Late Shyam Ghosh had a deep study of Hindu Sastras. He translated several ancient texts including a few relating to yoga. His expose of Patanjala Yogasutra is widely commended. His other published books are The Original Yoga (1989, 1999) and the Rgveda for the Layman (Satasuktaparidarsanam). Printed Pages: 288. 000116

Preventive Environmental Management: An Indian Perspective
Foundation Books in association with Centre for Environment Education; New Delhi, India; 8175963131; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New;
The link between business, production, commerce and environmental imperatives is becoming more and more obvious. Industry, the world over, is under pressure, like never before, from an unprecedented set of environmental laws. But, the fact is that only a few crusaders have managed to influence policy makers and opinion makers to devise the ""command and control regime"". It became increasingly clear during the latter part of the twentieth century that current development models would not help create an appropriate milieu for progress that would maintain a desirable environment and ensure sustainable development. To bridge this gap, a proactive movement emerged in governing systems, including industry and community. This has entailed a paradigm shift in approach, popularly known as PEM, i.e. Preventive Environmental Management. Implicit in this paradigm is the twining of economic and environmental benefits. This book highlights the need for incorporating PEM approaches, characterized by community action at all levels of implementation. At the company level, PEM means adopting a holistic approach that includes diagnosing processes and systems for pollution hot-spots, interventions to reduce wastes at source, improving product quality and yield, enhancing waste treatment and value addition and integrating economic and environmental concerns of the stakeholders. What the book attempts is an interpretation of the present status of India’s environment with special reference to municipal and industrial operations. Layayoga: The Definitive Guide to the Chakras and Kundalini
Motilal Banarsidass Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2011; 8120835166; First Edition; Softcover; New;
Tantra-a spiritual tradition centered on the use of the body to find enlightenment-has become extremely popular in the West, but at the heart of Tantra is the little-known practice of Layayoga. Layayoga focuses on the Tantric process of transforming the ordinary human body into a divine body in which every cell is awakened with consciousness. The fundamental aspect of Layayoga is the concentration and breath exercises, and the movement of this energy through the chakras. In Layayoga the adept learns not only to raise kundalini power from the base of the spine up through each chakra to the crown of the head, but also to then skillfully guide this power back to its home at the base of the spine. In the process the body becomes suffused with consciousness in a way not found in other types of Yoga. The result of the author's lifetime of yogic experimentation and Sanskrit scholarship, Layayoga corrects many misconceptions about the chakras and nadis. Complete with meditations and mantras to accompany each chakra, it will allow serious students of Yoga to realize a previously unimagined level of enlightenment in which they are one with the supreme consciousness.Printed Pages: 342. 102248

The Divine Songs of Sage Poet Ramprasad
Munshiram Manoharlal Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2004; 8121510856; First Edition; Cloth; New; New; 14 Cms x 21 Cms
Ramprasad Sen was born in the second decade of the eighteenth century in Halishahar in (then) Bengal. He was a great saint in Shakta cult. But, he was too natural a poet and composer. The songs are hymns to Goddess Mother Kali couched in rustic words and symbols of everyday life. Yet, most of this symbolism is a rare mosaic of the occult mystery of Tantrashastra and carry a double meaning. Thus, flying kites, the blind ox trudging routine endless circles of the village oil-machine (ghaani), the small town courtroom, the sailing craft of life-are all symbols of the highest mystic Shakta worship of Goddess Durga or Kali (Mahashakti). The English rendering aims to echo the nuances of the original in its threefold uniqueness: (a) simplicity and rustic symbols, (b) their inner spiritual mystique, and (c) muse and rhymes. The volumes will treat the English speaking world to a taste of this rare Indian spiritual songs and poetry. Printed Pages: 299. 011920

The Practice of Marketing: Science or Superstition?
Roli Books; New Delhi, India; 2005; 8174363432; First Edition; Paperback; New; 7.75 x 5.25 Inches
This book offers a comprehensive introduction to the methodology and applications of marketing models, starting with building blocks for models. This is then followed by the design of measurement instruments for the model and field experiments, and then the art (and science!) of drawing conclusions from the field studies. All this is achieved in a cohesive and concise manner with the overall strategy providing the link between these sections. A ‘how-to” book that is not burdened by indecipherable theory, it is also extremely easy to read with short, distinct chapters. In short, a must-read for marketing practitioners who believe there is more to marketing than ‘gut feel’!! Printed Pages: 276. 009625

Economic Organisation in Ancient India
Munshiram Manoharlal Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 1975; 8121502926; First Edition; Hardcover; New; 15 Cms x 23 Cms
This book is refreshing study of some of the basic issues in the current historical debate on early Indian economy and society. It identifies major trends in the writings on early Indian economic history , and analyses the increasingly oppressive nature of ancient Indian land revenue system and the economic role of early medieval south Indian temples. The author not only makes an assessment of the growing literature on the classical phase of Indian feudalism but also provides a critique of recent studies which claim to demolish the theory of Indian feudalism and seek to replace it by the fragile Chayanovian model of peasant economy and society. Battling Corruption: Has NREGA Reached India's Rural Poor?
Oxford University Press; New Delhi, India; 0198085001; Hardcover; New; New;
An ambitious workfare scheme, the National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (NREGA), was launched by the Indian government in 2005 to respond to the needs of the country`s poor. The scheme guarantees hundred days of employment in unskilled manual labour at a minimum wage to any rural household in a year.The statistics, however, reveal a bleak picture, and it has been observed that money has continually been siphoned off from the scheme. How can the state become more responsive to its citizens? How can citizens, especially the poor and less privileged, in turn ensure such responsiveness on the part of the state so as to reduce poverty and corruption? In Battling Corruption, the authors, using qualitative and quantitative analysis, measure the effectiveness of formal and informal mechanisms?political decentralization, community social audits, access to information, membership in networks, political competition?in reducing corrupt practices and enhancing poor people`s welfare,thereby enabling NREGA to reach its intended beneficiaries in the Indian states of Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Madhya Pradesh, and Rajasthan. The book also tries to understand the reasons why these mechanisms worked or failed in changing the dominant structure of institutional and social interactions, and transforming the ability of the poor to take advantage of these changes. The book will be invaluable to those studying economics, public administration, political science, and development studies. Policymakers, NGOs, and various bilateral and multilateral donor agencies will also find it resourceful. Printed Pages: 288. 108820
