27601 Ramin Jahanbegloo
Talking Philosophy: Richard Sorabji in Conversation with Ramin Jahanbegloo
Oxford University Press; New Delhi, India; 2015; 0199462887; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New;
In this engaging dialogue that moves effortlessly across interdisciplinary boundaries, Richard Sorabji expounds, with astounding clarity and candidness, on a broad range of issues such as the moral philosophy behind the concepts of just war and 'humanitarian intervention', whether it is possible to be a Stoic today, and whether there is such a thing as a continuous self. He surveys the four leading ancient schools of philosophical thought—Aristotelian, Stoic, Platonist (including Neoplatonist), and Epicurean—and analyses the differences in their approach to various subjects. Talking Philosophy is as much a recollection of Sorabji's childhood and his scholarly life at Oxford as it is a philosophical reflection on issues as varied and complex as whether animals have reason or whether Gandhi could be considered an ethical role model. The seventh book in the series of Ramin Jahanbegloo's interviews of prominent intellectuals, it provides a fascinating glimpse into the life and mind of one of the most outstanding comparative philosophers of our time. It is for the first time that the eight versions of Sivasahasranamastotra are being brought out in One Volume.If we leave aside the Mahabhagavata - Deviupapurana version which appears to be of recent origin, the remaining seven versions may conveniently be divided into two groups : a). Based on the Anusasana Par-van version of MB and b). Based on the Sand Parvan version of MB. Both the Linga Purana versions and the Siva Purana version belong to the former category. The Vayu Purana and Brahma Purana versions belong to the second category. All these versions are compiled together. Nilakantha's and Ganesa Naru's Commentaries are also included. The relevant passages from the RV. and Yajurveda are also appended. A Comprehensive Introduction and Glossary of Namans as in the Anusasana Par-van version of the Critical Edition of MB add to the productivity of this volume for further research.Printed Pages: 350. 103976

Crisis, Capital Flows and FDI in Emerging Asia
Oxford University Press; New Delhi, India; 2011; 0198069723; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New; 15 x 23 Cm
The relative insulation and rapid recovery of emerging Asia from the global financial crisis has evoked considerable interest in the growth experience of the Asian region. This book offers a unique view of this phenomenon through a critical and in-depth analysis of international capital flows, FDI, and exchange rate regimes and choices. Using a combination of quantitative data and analytical rigour, the essays provide answers to a wide array of questions of contemporary relevance such as: • How has emerging Asia handled booms and busts in capital flows? • How important are worker remittances as a source of external financing? • How are FDI flows to emerging Asia from within Asia different as compared to those from OECD economies? • What are the de jure and de facto policies of foreign bank entry into emerging Asian economies? • What has been the role of bank lending in India’s robust growth? • How are emerging Asian currencies managed in the context of global imbalances? While the book covers India, China, and other sub-regions of East and South Asia, it also has valuable policy pointers for other emerging markets. Reconsidering Untouchability: Chamars and Dalit History in North India
Orient BlackSwan/Permanent Black; New Delhi, India; 2014; 8178243946; Softcover; New;
Often identified as leatherworkers or characterized as a criminal caste, the Chamars of North India have long been stigmatized as untouchables. In this pathbreaking study, Ramnarayan S. Rawat shows that in fact the majority of Chamars have always been agriculturalists, and their association with the ritually impure occupation of leatherworking has largely been constructed through Hindu, colonial, and postcolonial representations of untouchability. Rawat undertakes a comprehensive reconsideration of the history, identity, and politics of this important Dalit group. Using Dalit vernacular literature, local-level archival sources, and interviews in Dalit neighborhoods, he reveals a previously unrecognized Dalit movement which has flourished in North India from the earliest decades of the twentieth century and which has recently achieved major political successes. Indian Society is a composite society. Indian culture is a composite culture. The structure of Indian society includes Hindu, Muslim, Christian and tribal social institutions. The present study of Indian society is structural-functional. Its analysis of the Indian social institutions is holistic. It clarifies the theoretical model of each social institution alongwith its factual contents. Its approach is anthropological as well as sociological. It is the result of decades of participant observation, deep philosophical insight and subtle sociological analysis, a rare combination possible only by an author having long experience of writing both in philosophy and sociology. Thus it is a valuable interdisciplinary work, bound to evoke reflection among serious students of Indian culture, religion, philosophy, anthropology and sociology. Printed Pages: 292. 002596

Cosmic Dance in Stone
Niyogi Books; New Delhi, India; 2017; 9789385285547; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New;
The intention of this book is to explore, through photographs and illustrations, the architectural spaces that were conceived to transcend space and time. Historians have traced their origins as also the rulers who helped build them while photographers have presented them in beautiful imagery. It was necessary, however, to understand the architectural nuances of these fine monuments, and the quality of light and space the designers were trying to achieve. It was also the discovery of James Fergusson's original version of Illustrations of the Rock-cut Temples of India, published in 1845 when he and his team had to travel around the subcontinent without the railways, proper places to stay, or even medical help. He captured in his lithographs the essence of such architecture and maintains that there is an expression of grandeur, and of quasi eternity, in a temple cut in the rock, which is far greater than can be produced by any structural building of the same dimensions.In Cosmic Dance in Stone, there is an attempt to rediscover the quest for eternity and the relationship with the cosmos through the creation of stone structures that give a glimpse of a world beyond this one. The designers, artists, and craftsmen of a bygone age manifested qualities in a building that are rarely seen today. Printed Pages: 228. 112634

Speaking Havoc: Social Suffering and South Asian Narratives
Oxford University Press; New Delhi, India; 2007; 0195692470; First Edition; Hard Cover; New; New; 15 x 23 Cm
This book investigates the possibilities for the intervention of literary and cinematic fictions into the politics and reception of social suffering. The term ‘social suffering’ here refers to a broader set of traumatic phenomena in South Asia. It covers a realm of experience—from the beginning of the twentieth century—consequential to the loss and distress of social and political crises. Focusing on central events such as the Partition of 1947, the assassination of Indira Gandhi in 1984, and more recent conflicts between India and Pakistan, Nagappan demonstrates the differing ways that narratives engage the political violence that has marked the last fifty years of South Asian history. The author discusses Amitav Ghosh’s modernist novel The Shadow Lines, Rohinton Mistry’s A Fine Balance, the short stories of Saadat Hasan Manto, Salman Rushdie’s postmodernist novel Shame, and the films of Mani Ratnam. These works confront the ethical dilemmas posed by representations of the catastrophes and innumerable tragedies that arise from clashes among religious and ethnic communities. In his compassionate engagement with these concerns, he establishes the relevance of literature and literary studies to fundamental sociological, anthropological, and political issues. 020920

The Pakistan Army: Composition, Character and Compulsions
KW Publishers; New Delhi, India; 2014; 9789381904992; First Edition; Softcover; New;
The Pakistan Army has always occupied a dominant position in Pakistan. It has been customary to refer to the 3 A's governing power equations in Pakistan - Allah, America & Army, of which certainly the Army has proved most omnipotent. This monograph traces the historical influences which shaped the Armys functioning. It delineates how the Army is adapting its doctrinal moorings to new priorities, both in respect of its arch-enemy - India and newly emerging domestic terrorism threats. A critical view is taken of how the Army has tried to balance peace negotiations with selected Good Taliban in the Federally Administered Tribal Areas with use of newly learnt military tactics of counter-terror operations. It studies ethnic factors which influenced initial recruitment, imparting a predominantly Punjabi character and more recent efforts to change the Armys ethnic profile. It also examines the impact of Islamic conservative ideas as the Army grappled with the war against terror after 9/11. An effort has been made to examine mistakes made in domestic and foreign policies while the Army remained at the helm, the ISIs evolution to its dominant position seen through the Afghanistan prism, the setback to the Armys image after Osama bin Ladens killing by American special forces in Abbottabad in May 2011, which cumulatively dimmed its luster in the perceptions of people in Pakistan. The monograph also looks at compulsions of the civil-military relationship even as Pakistan seems poised for the next phase of a democratic political makeover, which if allowed to happen smoothly, may well herald a process of gradually sending the Army back into the barracks. Even if this happens, the Army is unlikely to easily relinquish control over key areas of geo-strategic policy-making extending to India, Afghanistan and the nuclear policy. It may not, however, be averse to let the civilian political transition proceed as long as it is allowed to have a controlling veto over these issues from behind the scene.Printed Pages: 96. 104278

Recent years have witnessed a renewed interest in the historical studies of labour in India and other parts of the world. Apart from the study of the industrial workforce, labour history has been enriched by the scholarly attention to migratory mobile labour, lives of artisans, women and peasant migrants to plantations within India and overseas. Earlier the major emphasis of labour history research was on the core countries such as US, Canada, Europe and Japan. Now research on the labour history of the capitalist peripheries is growing and is increasingly attracting international scholarship. An urgent need is felt for reconstituting the older frameworks which had revolved around fixed binaries of space, time and social relations. MD Publications/Prints Publications; New Delhi, India; 2009; 8175331631; Hardcover; New; New;
Aesthetics is commonly known as the study of sensory or sensori-emotional values, sometimes called judgments of sentiment and taste. More broadly, scholars in the field define aesthetics as "critical reflection on art, culture and nature". Aesthetics is a subdiscipline of axiology, a branch of philosophy, and is closely associated with the philosophy of art. Aesthetics studies new ways of seeing and of perceiving the world. Aesthetics includes many things together like art, music, poetry, literature etc., so it becomes very important and easy to understand these very facets of aesthetics in a proper way. This book starts with the introductory chapter aesthetics, followed by defining the concept of art, history of aesthetics, philosophy of aesthetics and aesthetics of music, poetry, literature and paintings. Eastern and western aesthetics and aesthetics in Indian architecture, art, literature and science have been defined as a separate chapter. This book concludes with a chapter on some of the great aestheticians which is very important to know as they are the persons who have contributed immensely towards the development of aesthetics over the years. Encyclopaedia of Mysticism
MD Publications/Prints Publications; New Delhi, India; 2009; 817533164X; Hardcover; New; New;
Mysticism is used to refer the beliefs and practices which go beyond the liturgical and devotional forms of worships of mainstream faith. Mysticism may make use of canonical and non-canonical religious texts, and will generally interpret them hermeneutically, developing a philosophical perspective distinct from conventional religious interpretations. Many forms of mysticism in the modern world will adapt or adopt texts from entirely different faiths-Vivekananda in Vedanta for instance is noted for his assertions that all religions are one. As a rule, mysticisms are less concerned with religious differnces and more concerned with social or individual development. Mysticism is defined in this book and many important topics related to mysticism have been covered here. The Characterstics of Mysticism, Mysticism and Theology, Mysticism and Psychology, Mysticsim and Symbolism, Mysticism and Magic, Mysticsim and Vitalism, The Mystic way, Hindu Mysticism, The Mysticism of the Upanishads, The Mysticism of Yoga, Buddhist Mysticism, Devotional Mysticism and their Classical Forms, Mysticism in Sufism,Mysticism in Christianity and Jain Mysticism are chpters which have been covered in this book. A City in the Making: Aspects of Calcutta's Early Growth
Niyogi Books; New Delhi, India; 2016; 9789385285288; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New;
When Job Charnock landed at Sutanati in 1690 the place was no more than an ordinary Bengal village on the banks of the Hooghly. Yet, by the middle of the nineteenth century, it was being described as the second city of the British Empire. With the help of archival records, this volume plots the various stages of the journey on the part of the three villages of Sutanati, Kalikata and Gobindapur which collectively came to be called Calcutta (renamed Kolkata).The story is broken up into three sections the first of which deals with the unplanned growth of the place till the town fell to the forces led by the nawab, Shiraj-ud-Daula, in 1756. During this time the main effort on the part of the authorities was directed at cleaning up the place and setting up essential facilities such as a hospital, a jail, a mayor's court, strengthening the banks of the river, etc. The second period, which extended till the end of the eighteenth century, saw the expansion of Calcutta southward and eastward which kept the authorities busy with issues such as compensation for acquired land, the formation of today's Maidan, the building of the arterial Circular Road, the setting up of bazars, and improving the drainage system. The third period marked the advent of the town-planning era set in motion by Lord Wellesley. The volume takes the story to the point where the Lottery Committee was formed in 1817. Issues of Social Justice (State of Justice in India Series: Vols. I-IV)
Sage Publications; New Delhi, India; 2009; 8132100646; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New;
This set presents a comprehensive analytical study of the state of social justice in India. The four volumes undertake theoretical and empirical inquiry into the various spheres of justice, collectively creating what can be termed a ‘report card’ of the regime of social justice in the country. Authored by some of the finest ethnographers and analysts in the country, the works approach the issue of justice in the broader context of post-colonial democracy, and look at the limits within which democracy permits justice, social justice in particular. The volumes, which are part of the series State of Justice in India: Issues of Social Justice, reveal that the issues pertaining to social justice are extremely contentious, and hence, dynamic. The ethnographic-historical studies are cast in an archaeological mode of inquiry. They highlight how time, place, history, perceptions, arrangements or apparatuses (such as legal, judicial, constitutional and administrative apparatuses) play significant roles in influencing social justice. This set will be a rich resource for students and researchers working in the fields of justice, sociology, law, political theory and Indian democracy. It will also be immensely useful for policy makers, policy analysts, human rights activists and NGOs. Printed Pages: 1276. 028602

27658 Ranajit Guha; Edited, with an Introduction By Partha Chatterjee
The Small Voice of History: Collected Essays
Permanent Black; New Delhi, India; 2010; 8178242915; First Paperback Edition; Paperback; New; 15 x 23 Cm
Ranajit Guha is arguably the Indian historian whose writings have had a massive and formative impact on contemporary scholarship in several disciplines throughout the world: on postcolonial studies in literature, in anthropology, in history, in cultural studies, in art history. Guha first became known as the practitioner of a critical Marxism that ran parallel to the work of British and French Marxist historians of the 1960s and 1970s but which, instead of recreating a ‘history from below’, sought active political engagement with the present by deploying insights drawn from Gramsci and Mao. More recently, Guha’s writings have drawn attention to the phenomenological and the everyday, and been noticed for their sustained critique of the disciplinary practices of history-writing. Guha’s reputation rests most famously on his international role as founder and guiding spirit of Subaltern Studies, the series of essays and monographs that have, over the past three decades, critiqued colonialist and nationalist historiographies. While spawning new ways of thinking about history in Europe, Latin America, and the USA, these have created a ferment richer than anything else emerging out of modern South Asia, even as they have unsettled many existing frameworks of thought. Guha’s fascinatingly diverse historical and political writings, dating from the 1950s and tucked away in obscure journals and collections, have been virtually inaccessible: they are brought together for the first time in the present volume, which comprises his Collected Essays in English, forty-four in number. These writings have been put together by Partha Chatterjee, whose long association with Guha as a founder-member of the Subaltern Studies editorial board is complemented by his own international stature as a historian, political theorist, and public intellectual. Chatterjee’s Introduction sketches the professional life and intellectual trajectory of India’s most profoundly influential modern historian. Every serious student of South Asian history, politics, and anthropology will be enriched by the astonishing diversity of insights and learning within this book. Printed Pages: 676. 032738

Strangers on the Shore
Niyogi Books; New Delhi, India; 9789383098613; Softcover; New;
Old Arnie, son of a long dead possessive mother keeps the memory of her alive, fighting her, loving her, afraid of her. His half-sister Chrissie frets and fusses over her son Luke and the choices he makes or doesn’t make. Luke resists his mother’s tendency to control and leaves her in order to discover himself. Melissa’s life-journey is shaped by the influence of a dominant, perverted grandfather. Sabby isn’t able to come to terms with his son’s preferences. Their paths cross and re-cross, dramatically negotiating each other and the myriad lives who touch them, weaving an intensely emotional and psychological story about people who find themselves and lose themselves in an effort to discover who they really are. Strangers on the Shore reveals the dark underbelly of so-called sacrosanct relationships and filial ties and draws the reader into exploring realities that are most often brushed under the carpet or scrupulously avoided in ‘polite’ society. Randhir Khare’s robust and and compelling fictional narrative expressed through brilliantly created voices will touch a chord deep within those who pick up this book and read.Printed Pages: 344. 106556

Selected Writings of Randhir Singh
Aakar Books; New Delhi, India; 2017; 9789350023488; First Edition; Softcover; New;
This volume has three parts. Part One consists of Randhir Singh’s seminal philosophical work, Reason, Revolution and Political Theory which was written not just as a response, as he claimed it was- to the British political theorist, Michael Oakeshott’s book, Rationalism in Politics and Other Essays, but as an alternative theoretical treatise on social enquiry. The questions raised by Randhir Singh in the 1960s have acquired even more significance today as the debates on similar questions on science and philosophy, facts and values, ideology and practice unfold vigorously in the twenty first century. Part Two contains some of his well known essays on Marxism giving his non-determinist, dialectical materialist interpretation and how Marxist approach could be applied to concrete situations of the time. In Part Three we have the essays and lectures on some major aspects of Indian Politics dealing with the state of democratic rights in India and other extremely serious and live issues such as terrorism and reservation. On these issues his analysis and positions stand out conspicuously as distinct from not only familiar debates in the media, but also from the formulations by the mainstream left parties. This selection does not carry his magnum opus, the tome of thousand odd pages—Crisis of Socialism: Notes in Defence of a Commitment which is a detailed examination of the process of collapse of the Soviet Union and capitalist transformation of societies such as China where he presents sharp critiques of some of the policies these regimes pursued and puts out suggestions to read Marxist classics and historical developments with fresh understanding. That important work is not reproduced here mainly for reasons of space and the book in six parts is available separately also from Aakar Books. But the approach governing that analysis is very much there in this volume as well, especially in Part Two and Part Three. The publication of this volume was planned for presentation to him in his 95th year. But unfortunately he did not live to see that. Now we put it out in his memory. Randhir Singh (1922-2016) was a distinguished teacher and former Professor of Political Theory, University of Delhi. He had been associated with the communist movement since 1939. Of his writings, Harry Magdoff, editor, Monthly Review, has said: ‘I admire the solidity of your analysis as well as the firmness of your commitment’. Printed Pages: 472. 111681

A Talent for War: The Military Biography of Lt Gen Sagat Singh
Vij Books India Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2013; 9789382652236; Hardcover; New; New;
Lt Gen Sagat Singh is unarguably the only military genius post independence India has produced. He commenced his military career through humble beginnings in the Bikaner State Forces with only a smattering knowledge of English. At the outbreak of World War 2 he was commissioned as an officer and served in the Middle East with his Battalion and on staff. By the time the War was over he was the only officer to have done two staff courses, including the prestigious course at Quetta. On being absorbed into the Indian Army after Independence, he was transferred to 3rd Gorkha Rifles, where he commanded two battalions. He was given command of the Para Brigade on promotion and led it in the Goa Operations with aplomb. He was primarily responsible for liberating this Portuguese Colony. Sagat's drive and energy stood out. On promotion as Major General, he commanded 17 Mountain Division in Sikkim, where in 1967, in a bloody skirmish which lasted several days, he gave the Chinese a bloody nose, proving that the Indian Army was no pushover. That year he was transferred to Shillong and tasked to curb the Mizo Insurgency. In two years he succeeded in doing so effectively. In 1970, he was promoted to Lt Gen and given command of 4 Corps. It seemed his whole life was geared to leading a Corps into battle. In 1971, in a major logistic achievement he moved and staged his Corps at Agartala. When operations commenced to liberate Bangladesh, his Corps relentlessly attacked and defeated Pakistan forces, crossed river lines and terrain considered impassable. His innovative use of helicopters has never been repeated. His is the only example in the Indian Army of a successful corps level campaign, which can stand out historically. His knowledge of the operational art was perhaps without parallel. He retired in Dec 1974 and settled down in Jaipur, where till his death in 2001, he tried to ameliorate the lives of ex-servicemen and his people. His achievements were recognised by the Government of Bangladesh, when the President, publicly and formally honoured his son and daughter-in-law in Mar 2013.Printed Pages: 332. 103260

In Search of Sticks
Zen Publications/D.K. Printworld (P) Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 1927559200; Softcover; New;
In Search of Sticks simultaneously challenges the intellect while surfacing raw emotional response. James, by the standards one generally uses to measure a life, is accomplished. Still, he twists. What if, in the final analysis, it ends up being as much about that which wasn't done rather than just what was acted upon? Paths are chosen. Steps are taken.A compelling parallel story unfolds - Hope's African existence. It was emphatically stated that "God does not have favourites." But is this true? A picture is painted and its canvas is littered with the likenesses of disease and poverty and the images of those trapped in the geography of violence. Despite the forms of tragedy that present themselves, this story is full of hope. The victories are told in the small tales and the sheer numbers who do not sell their souls.
