Panorama of Proverbs (Hindi-Sanskrit-English-Urdu-Arabic-Persian)
Nag Publishers; Delhi, India; 1984; 817081023X; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New;
Like motherland, the mother-tongue is the image of The Mother of the universe. No improvement of a nation can be rendered wholly perfect, unless the mother-tongue is improved. Nay, Religion of a nation cannot be fully developed prosperity cannot quickly crown a nation knowledge cannot fully manifest itself in the country, national sentiments cannot be preserved intact, the glory of native land cannot be magnified, man cannot attain the full stature of humanity, originality of a nation cannot be preserved, nor can he speedily attain temporal advancement, spiritual elevation as well as redemption, unless the mother tongue be preserved and improved. As the Sutras (aphorisms) of the Holy Scriptures are intimately connected with the intellect, so are the popular sayings (proverbs) of language closely associated with the mind. As many profound ideas relating to domain of intellect are expressed by the small aphorisms, so are the profound ideas relating to the domain of mind expressed by proverbs current in the language.This work 'Kahawat Ratnakar', first part of Panorama of Proverbs has been published with a view to serve the mother-tongue. Hindi. These sayings have been collected through the assistance of many savants. Sayings in Hindi (our mother-tongue) as well National language are the main factor in this work; and as matters of subsidiary importance sayings have likewise been culled from Sanskrit (the father-tongue) or rendered into Sanskrit in several instances. For the sake of convenience, sayings have also been culled from English or Urdu or translated in either of these languages. Care has been taken to gleen, as far as possible, corresponding proverbs from the Arabic and Persian also.Printed Pages: 222. 103917

Hinduism and Buddhism: An Historical Sketch, 3 Vols.
Munshiram Manoharlal Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2003; 8121510937; Reprint; Hard Cover; New; New; 14 Cms x 22 Cms
First published in 1921, when the author was the British Ambassador in Tokyo, Hinduism and Buddhism provides a vivid historical sketch of the Hindu and Buddhist religions, an immense subject. In his introduction Sir Charles Eliot points to the real foundation of Indian thought: ‘Here more than in any other country the national mind finds its favourite occupation and full expression in religion. This quality is geographical rather than racial, for it is possessed by Dravidians as much as by Aryans. From the raja to the peasant most Hindus have an interest in theology and often a passion for it. Few works of art and literature are purely secular: the intellectual and aesthetic efforts of India, long, continuous and distinguished as they are almost all the expression of some religious phase.’ The reissue of this eminent book is an important event which will be welcomed by all who are concerned with Hindu and Buddhist religion and thought. The Buddhist Art of Gandhara: The story of the early school, it's birth, growth and Decline
Munshiram Manoharlal Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2016; 812150967X; Reprint; Hard Cover; New; New; 19 x 25 Cm
About two thousand years ago, the land named Gandhara on the west banks of the Indus fell successively under the Greeks, the Sakas and the Parthians. This book gives an account of the school of art which formed itself under these widely divergent cultures. The early Gandhara school is chiefly notable in providing the earliest works of art in which the Buddha was represented in bodily form. Before this, he had always been shown symbolically; the characteristic and now familiar Buddha image was developed from the work of the early Gandhara sculptors. Sir John Marshall begins by analysing the formative influences of Gandhara art, its relationship to the early svhool of Central India and Hindustand, and the extent of its debt to the Greeks. He then traces the history of its development, in a remarkable and carefully chosen series of illustrations. The text is in the form of a commentary on these illustrations; the reader can thus share the author's extensive knowledge of the Gandhara school while observing for himself its growth and decline. Since it deals with the birth of their religious art as it exists today, this book must be of interest to a great many people in Buddhist countries. It will also be of value to oriental historians and those concerned with Eastern art in general. Printed Pages: 136 with 152 b/w illustrations. 039772

The Garland of Letters: Essays on Tantra/ Mantra Sastra (The Selected Works of Sir John Woodroffe)
Motilal Banarsidass Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2013; 8178224003; First Edition; Softcover; New;
This book is an attempt to explain to an English knowing reader an undoubtedly difficult subject. It is natural that, given the difficulty and the mystery which surrounds the subjects that strangers to India have failed to understand Mantra. They jumped to the conclusion that it is “meaningless superstition.” This is the familiar argument of the lower mind which says “what I cannot understand can have no sense at all.” Mantra is, it is true, meaningless to those who do not know its meaning. But there are others who do, and to them it is not "superstition." The Mantra-Sastra is worthy of a close study which, when undertaken, will disclose elements of value to minds free from superstition, of metaphysical bent and subtle-seeing (Suksmadarsin). A profound doctrine, ingeniously though guardedly set forth, is contained in the Tantras of Mantra-Sastra or Agama.Printed Pages: 319. 102320

The Great Liberation: Mahanirvana Tantra (The Selected Works of Sir John Woodroffe)
Motilal Banarsidass Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2013; 8178224224; First Edition; Softcover; New;
The Indian Tantras, which are numerous, constitute the scripture (Sastra) of the Kaliyuga, and as such are a voluminous source of present and practical orthodox "Hinduism". The Tantra Sastra is, in fact, whatever be its historial origin, a development of the Karmakanda (using that term in the general sense of ritual section of the scripture), promulgated to meet the needs of that age. Siva says: "For the benefit of men of the Kali age, men bereft of energy and dependent for existence on the food they eat, the Kaula doctrine, O auspicious one! is given" (Ch. IX, verse 12). To the Tantras we must therefore look if we would understand aright both ritual, yoga, and sadhana of all kinds as they exist to-day, as also the general principles of which these practices are but the objective expression.Printed Pages: 472. 102321

The World as Power (The Selected Works of Sir John Woodroffe)
Motilal Banarsidass Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2013; 8178224216; First Edition; Softcover; New;
There is a Supreme Reality which is Eternal and Indefinable. It is an Absolute, inconceivable and ineffable- the Brahman. Unknowable in its utterness, this Reality presents itself to us in three supreme terms of its Truth: an absolute Existence, Sat; an absolute Consciousness, Cit; and an absolute Bliss, Ananda. This is the poise of Brahman turned towards self-revelation. It perceives itself as an infinite Existence; not a mere existence but a Being with a full awareness of all that It is, an infinite Consciousness. This Consciousness inherent in the supreme Being is no static awareness it is instinct with a Power, a Force dynamic with all the content of the Consciousness. And the nature of this selfconscient Existence is an inalienable Delight. All is a manifestation out of this triune status of the Eternal, Sat-Cit-Ananda.Printed Pages: 484. 102322

Principles of Tantra, Part I and II (The Selected Works of Sir John Woodroffe)
Motilal Banarsidass Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2014; 8178224542; First Edition; Softcover; New;
The present work is a defence of the Tantra, of which Sastra the author is an adherent and a polemic, undertaken in the interests of Hindu orthodoxy in its Sakta and Tantrika form against secularism on the one hand, and on the other the religious eclecticism and various reforming movements, of which, when the book was first written, the Brahmasamaj was a leading type. In fact, in parts the book reads like an orthodox Catholic protest against modernism and is thus interesting as showing how many fundamental principles are common to all orthdox forms of belief, whether of West or of East.The author of the Tantratattva (on which this translation is based)is a well-known Tantrik Pandit, preacher, and secretary of the Sarvamgalasabha of Benares, who knew no English. His work, which is written in Bengali, may therefore be taken to be an accurate popular statement of modern orthodox views on the subject treated by him. The word Tattva is a very comprehensive one, which is by no means always easy to translate. The author has rendered the title of the book as Principles of Tantra, though, may be, it should be Subjects of Tantra. The work deals with chosen topics of Tantra. This, however, also involves a statement of certain fundamental principles which govern Sastrik teaching on the subjects dealt with, and this as well as the contents of possible future volumes must be the justification for giving the book ambitious title.Printed Pages: 512. 102323

Hymns to the Goddess and Hymns to Kali:: Karpuradi Stotra (The Selected Works of Sir John Woodroffe)
Motilal Banarsidass Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2014; 8178224488; First Edition; Softcover; New;
The hymns to the Devi in this volume (introduced by a stotra to Her Spouse, the Kalabhairava) are taken from the Tantra, Purana, Mahabharata, and Sankaracarya, who was "the incarnation of devotion" (bhaktavatara) as well as a great philosopher; a fact which is sometimes ignored by those who do not wish to be reminded that he, whose speculative genius they extol, was also the protagonist of the so-called "idolatrous Hinduism." As his great example amongst many others of differing race and creed tell us, it is not, from the view of religion, the mark of discernment (even though it be the mode) to neglect or disparage the ritual practice which all orthodoxies have prescribed for their adherents. Of the Hymns now published, those from the Mahabharata and Candi have already been translated; Adyakalisvarupastotra has also been previously published as part of a rendering of the Mahanirvana Tantra. It is necessary to study the Hindu commentators and to seek the oral aid of those who possess the traditional interpretation of the Sastra. Without this and an understanding of what Hindu worship is and means, absurd mistakes are likely to be made. The author has therefore availed himself of the Commentaries of Nilakantha on the Mahabharata, of Gopala Chakravarti and Nagogi Bhatta on Candi, and of Nilakantha on the Devibhagavata.Printed Pages: 347. 102324

Fundamental of Hinduism
D.K. Printworld (P) Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2012; 8124606072; First Edition; Softcover; New; 15 x 22 Cm
The book is one of the earliest authoritative works on the fundamental nature of Hinduism, authored by a noted Western scholar, Sir Monier Monier-Williams. The scholarly work deals with the fundamental aspects of Hinduism: the nature of its beliefs, philosophy and practice. It provides precious details on the principal works of Hinduism: the Vedas, the Upanishads and the Dharmashastras. It discusses the essence of the Vedic hymns, the Brahmanas and the sacrificial system, the Upanishadic philosophy, the doctrine of triple manifestations, and the development of sectarian beliefs — Shaivism, Vaisnavism and later Shaktism. The in-depth study delves objectively into the major concepts and doctrines associated with Hinduism, such as, the doctrine of incarnation, doctrine of devotion and idol-worship as well as the caste system. It presents a discussion on the famous places held sacred by the Hindus which are the major centres of pilgrimage: the city of Benares, Allahabad, Gaya, Nashik and Haridwar, among others. A Sanskrit-English Dictionary
Sharada Publishing House; Delhi, India; 2005; 8188934267; Hardcover; New; New; 23 x 29 Cm
The present work is a milestone in the history of Sanskrit scholarship in general and of the Sanskrit lexicography in particular. This dictionary had only two predecessors. Indian kosa-s, all written in Sanskrit, were but thesauri of synonyms and antonyms, the concept of arranging words in alphabetical order being conspicuously absent. It contained several features with special reference to ‘cognate Indo-European language.’ The first edition of the Dictionary was published in 1872 and soon became out of print and the revised second edition contains words and derivatives culled from more than four hundred Sanskrit texts. The author, has taken the meanings given by Indian lexicographers Kosa-karas and the development of meanings have been shown in chronological order.Printed Pages: 1367. 102739

India: Eternal Cycle
Aryan Books International; New Delhi, India; 1998; 8173050171; First Edition; Softcover; New;
India's history dates back to several millennia. Between the Indus Valley civilization and today in India there are many gaps and periods about which little is known. The links joining one period to another are not always evident and a very great deal has happened and innumerable changes have taken place. But there is always a underlying sense of continuity which joins modern India to the far distant period of thousands of years ago. It is this presentation of India's past which is the guiding line of INDIA: THE ETERNAL CYCLE, and which artist and historian have tried to potray with as much fidelity as possible. The illustrated book is a unique attempt to analyse and visually represent the history of India. The splendid legacies of a great antiquity and an ancient religion are beautifully potrayed through a fascinating panorama of paintings connected with India's history and done specially for this work. The book thus affords a unique opportunity to present to the reader sumptuous and varied representations of India's past which are rarely if ever on public view. Printed Pages: 106. 100289

Sarat Chandra Bose: Remembering My Father
Niyogi Books; New Delhi, India; 9789383098507; Hardcover; New; New;
This biography is the story of two exceptional brothers – one a well-known barrister and public figure who was a dominant force to reckon with in British India and the other a revolutionary and national hero of this country who set a portion of British dominated India free before 15 August 1947, remembered and revered by the world as Netaji. The brothers – Sarat Chandra and Subhas Chandra Bose (Netaji) hailed from the Bose family of Mahinagar in West Bengal. The family has a long lineage, a rich social and political heritage and an eventful past. The author Sisir Kumar Bose – Sarat Chandra’s son and Netaji’s nephew – offers a first person account and an insider’s view of the dynamics of and the upheavals in the family during the tumultuous days of the Raj in early and mid-20th century. The rise of Sarat Chandra Bose as one of the most eminent barristers and public figures of the times has been deftly yet sensitively traced by his son, supported by priceless photographs, letters, pages from diaries and other documents from the family archives and the Netaji Research Bureau. On the 125th birth anniversary of Sarat Chandra Bose, this book is an insightful contribution to the annals of the socio-political history of pre- Independence India.Printed Pages: 244 with 122 b/w photographs. 106518

The Shadow of the Cross: Christianity and Hinduism in a Colonial Situation
Munshiram Manoharlal Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 1974; 8121503205; First Edition; Hard Cover; New; New; 14 Cms x 22 Cms
The challenge of Christianity played a very significant role in the resurgence of Bengal in the nineteenth century. The Hindu intellectuals had to reinterpret his theological position to meet this new challenge which also made him aware of his own religious heritage. It thus helped the growth of a religious nationalism which culminated into a political nationalism towards the close of that century. The nature of this confrontation between Christianity and Hinduism is the subject of this book. Christianity appeared in Bengal as a western religion-the religion of her new ruler, and it posed a threat to the very way of life of a Bengali Hindu. The religious movements which grew out of its challenge did not remain confined to theological debates only, but had a wider area of operation and were associated with all other social movements which constituted and regulated the currents of the so called Bengal Renaissance. This book traces the history of the Hindu response to Christianity in its various stages and describes the nature of Hindu religious movements which reflect the complexities and confusions, the aspirations and failures of the Bengali mind in search of a new ethics and a new set of values. The book thus provides a general model of the study of religious confrontation in a colonial situation. (Winner of Tagore Prize 1975) Printed Pages: 193 001439
