27701 Shivshankar Menon
Choices: Inside the Making of India's
Penguin Books India Pvt. Ltd./Prakash Books; New Delhi, India; 0670089230; Hardcover; New; New;
"Shivshankar Menon gives an insider’s account of the negotiations, discussions and assessments that went into the making of five pivotal choices in India’s recent history. These include the decision not to use overt military force against Pakistan after 26/11; the civil nuclear deal with the United States; the border agreement with China; the response to the last months of Sri Lanka’s brutal civil war; and the thinking that underlay India’s No First Use nuclear policy. Drawing on his long and distinguished career as a diplomat holding critical positions in India’s external affairs ministry and in the prime minister’s office, Menon considers each situation against the backdrop of India’s evolving definition of her place in the changing global landscape. He brings out the history, politics and principles involved, while examining and dissecting the reasons for the outcome. Analytical, lucid and illuminating, Choices is an unmatched insight into the intellectual heft of foreign policy decision-making by one of India’s most formidable diplomatic practitioners who was actively engaged in these five defining moments." 10 Conversations You Need to Have with Yourself
Times Group Books; New Delhi, India; 2011; 8126534184; First Edition; Softcover; New;
10 Conversations You Need to Have With Yourself shows readers how to use the practice of conversation -- in this case, self-talk -- to deal with their concerns including depression, family problems, anxiety, career questions, and more. In this book, Rabbi Shmuley shows how to turn negative self-talk into positive self-talk regarding such issues as love, self-esteem, life success, and fear of aging. It includes dramatic stories from Boteach's work counseling people in need as well as practical self-improvement sample self-talk scripts. Although Boteach has written previous bestselling titles on family issues and sex, this is his first self-improvement book.Some of the most effective talk therapy is self-talk therapy-learning to connect positively with that internal voice that serves as your own personal GPS to guide you through life. Rabbi Shmuley teaches the reader to reconnect with the inner voice of conscience, the source of personal dreams and values, which has been so drowned out by the noise of a culture that emphasizes form over substance, career over calling, and consumption over conviction. Drawing on Rabbi Shmuley's extensive counseling experience, this book helps you defeat negative self-talk and strengthen your positive inner voices of inspiration, conscience, and deepest self to help you move forward and live your truest life. Filled with dramatic real-life examples and practical exercises, it guides you through the ten most important and life-changing conversations you will ever have.Printed Pages: 240. 104501

The Little Flower Girl
Times Group Books; New Delhi, India; 2013; 8192535428; First Edition; Softcover; New;
A story teller unravels the extraordinary stories of some ordinary people. On our journey through life we meet so many people--many we forget but some leave memories that refuse to fade away.This is a collection of true stories-of actual meetings and encounters that the author had with these people over the years as a journalist. The 11-year-old flower seller with her unfulfilled dreams, the gay men forced into lives of heterosexual unhappiness,the heart-wrenching stories of abandoned HIV positive children whom no-one wants to adopt. There are poignant stories of old women in old age homes.Among the exploited prostitutes there stands out Sandhya who proudly describes how being a sex-worker has enabled her to educate and marry off her siblings.Poor home-less pavement dwellers live together amicably regardless of their religion.One old lady tells the author:"here everyone has only one caste-Ezhari jaati-(the caste of the poor).” Yet what shines through these stories isn't despair but hope and triumph of the human spirit against all odds.Printed Pages: 148. 104884

Buddhist Critical Spirituality: Prajna and Sunyata
Motilal Banarsidass Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2001; 8120817982; Hard Cover; New; New;
This book comprises fifteen research articles primarily based on the discipline of Indian and Buddhist Studies. The collection is designed to propose a Buddhist philosophy of religion--that the insight of Prajna and Sunyata initiates a future religion which is freed both from conflict between reasoning and believing, and from goal-oriented cycles of life. It addresses transformation from the conflict-ridden quest for a supreme being, to the search for a non-theistic nature of spirituality that provides a foundation for universal human happiness and salvation. For the discipline of Buddhist Studies, this collection also demonstrates the productive value of drawing upon cross-cultural and cross-racial literary sources and traditions. A Reference Grammar of Thai provides a clear, detailed and comprehensive guide to Thai grammar, designed for intermediate to advanced learners. Imagining the Urban: Sanskrit and the City in Early India
Permanent Black; New Delhi, India; 2010; 8178242788; First Edition; Hard Cover; New; New; 15 x 23 Cm
When you think of India’s ancient cities, you think of khaki archaeologists digging crumbling structures out of ancient mud. Urban spheres, from this perspective, often look as dull as the dust from which they emerge. But the early Indian city wasn’t like that at all, says Shonaleeka Kaul; it was certainly not only brick-and-mortar, nor merely an agglomeration of built-up space. In Sanskrit literature these cities were alive, vibrant, teeming with variety. Kaul examines Sanskrit ka-vyas over about a thousand years to see what India’s early historic cities were like as living, lived-in, entities. She looks at ideologies, attitudes, institutions, and practices in ancient urban areas, showing the ways in which they often cohered into a worldview, a mentalité. This is also a book about Sanskrit literature. Scholars have long argued for a nuanced use of literary texts to achieve a more rounded understanding of ancient history, and Kaul achieves exactly that. She takes forward the idea of a Sanskrit ‘literary culture’, arguing that genres influence methods of historical representation. Her book gives us a fresh view of the early city, showing distinctive urban ways of thought and behaviour which relate in complex ways to tradition, morality, and authority. In advocating Sanskrit ka-vyas as an important historical source, it addresses not just ancient India specialists but also scholars of literary history: the ka-vyas rework history, says Kaul, providing us with ‘transhistoricity’ rather than ‘ahistoricity’. By asking new questions about early Indian cities and ancient Indian texts, this book asks to be read by every scholar of history, urbanism, cityscapes, literary history, Sanskrit writings, and South Asian antiquity. Shakespeare and the Art of Lying
Orient BlackSwan; New Delhi, India; 2013; 812505264X; Hardcover; New; New;
Questions of truth, untruth, representation and deception were pivotal to sixteenth and seventeenth century thought. Be it Machiavelli, More or Montaigne, writers and philosophers struggled with questions of lying and truth-telling, and how truth is constructed and performed. But what view did Shakespeare subscribe to? What notions of falsehood, and, axiomatically, of truth, emerge from a reading of his works? Questions of truth, untruth, representation and deception were pivotal to sixteenth and seventeenth century thought. Be it Machiavelli, More or Montaigne, writers and philosophers struggled with questions of lying and truth-telling, and how truth is constructed and performed. But what view did Shakespeare subscribe to? What notions of falsehood, and, axiomatically, of truth, emerge from a reading of his works? This collection of essays from scholars such as Stuart Sillars, Coppélia Kahn, Supriya Chaudhuri, Bijoy Boruah, R. W. Desai, Gert Hofmann and Shormishtha Panja explores the many facets of lies, deception, truth and half-truth that feature so prominently in well-known plays such as Hamlet, King Lear, Twelfth Night and A Midsummer Night’s Dream and inShakespeare’s Sonnets and poems. From philosophy to physiognomy, from fictionality to reality, the essays are as varied as revealing. While the book explores the subversive potential of speech in the context of gender and class in Othello, there is also an analysis of ‘The Phoenix and the Turtle,’ one of Shakespeare’s lesser-known works. From examining visages of truth and deception in Hamlet, drawing on early modern discourses of face-reading, to reading Shakespeare in light of Nietzschean truth and falsehood and theories of mimesis and verisimilitude-these essays analyse how complex and textured Shakespeare’s engagement with lying is. In addition, the essayists pull into their orbit writers as varied as Plato, St. Augustine, Erasmus, Castiglione, and Franz Kafka.Printed Pages: 247. 101975

27747 Shrabani Basu (Author) M.R.D. Foot (Frwd)
Spy Princess: The Life of Noor Inayat Khan
Lotus/Roli Books; New Delhi, India; 8174366148; Softcover; New;
On 13 September 1944, Noor Inayat Khan, the first female wireless operator to be flown into occupied France, was shot at Dachau. The descendant of Tipu Sultan, the Tiger of Mysore, Noor was born in Moscow and raised in the Sufi style of Islam. From this unlikely background, she became the only Asian secret agent in Europe in World War II, was one of three women in the SOE to be awarded the George Cross and the Croix de Guerre. Shrabani Basu's new book tells the full story of this extraordinarily heroic woman. Noor was brought up in France and Britain and joined the Red Cross when World War II broke out. In Britain, Noor trained as a wireless operator before being recruited by the SOE. Such was the urgent demand for radio operators that she was sent to France before her training was completed. Working under the code name of Madeleine, she joined a group that sabotaged communication lines. But disaster struck quickly and, within days, her circuit collapsed and her colleagues were arrested. Though instructed by her controller, the famous Maurice Buckmaster, to return home, she refused to abandon her post as she was the last radio operator left in Paris. For a time, she successfully dodged the Gestapo, but by late 1943 her luck had run out. She was betrayed, arrested and imprisoned at Avenue Foch. Undaunted, she made two dramatic escape attempts, but was recaptured and sent to Germany. Here she was interrogated and tortured and finally sent to Dachau, where she was shot. The Germans had learned nothing from her - not even her real name. Printed Pages: 218. 108561

Bharma's Dream
Roli Books; New Delhi, India; 2006; 818693927X; Third Impression; Paperback; New; 8.5 x 5.5 Inches
Born with a rare form of anaemia, thirteen-year-old Mohini is not expected to live beyond the age of three. Mohini's condition and her impending, inevitable death is the pivot around which the characters of Brahma's Dream live out their lives. But, instead of tragedy, it is humour, the fascinating detail of events as they unfold and, ultimately, the wry and heart-warming wisdom of the girl at the centre of the story that absorbs and envelops the reader. Set in Bombay in the forties, at the defining moment when India emerged from British rule, Brahma's Dream is as much the story of a nation on the move, as of a Maharastrian family that is forward-thinking and ready to embrace the new order, while holding on to the traditions it holds dear. Far from wallowing in self-pity, Mohini is both an astute observer and an active participant in all that goes on in the Oek household. Her parents, Keshav and Kamala, share a passionate love that is at first rent asunder and then, amazingly, healed, by their daughter's illness. Her young aunt, Vasanti, condemned to an early widowhood that no astrologer foretold, believes that there is a reason for this. Mohini's grandfather, Vishnupant, is the patriarch who rules Koleshwar Nivas with a firm and compassionate hand, a professor of history who has devoted his life to making sense of India's past so that the country may fulfil the promise of its future. And, as India surges towards independence, Mohini's family and friends look to her to help make sense and assign meaning to a rapidly changing world. A remarkable debut novel that succeeds in being hugely entertaining and immensely moving, Brahma's Dream explores the Hindu belief that birth, suffering and death are all but a part of a vast continuum in the mind of a god. 27751 Shree Govind Misra
History of Bihar 1740-1772
Munshiram Manoharlal Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 1970; 8121503825; First Edition; Hard Cover; New; New; 15 Cms x 23 Cms
During the reign of Aurangzeb, Bihar had the status of an independent administrative unit of the Mughal Empire. The Bihar governors then were in no way subordinate to the governors of Bengal. After Fakhr-ud-Dowla, its last independent governor, Bihar was, however, annexed to the Bengal Suba and it remained as an appanage of Bengal thereafter for about 200 years (1733 to 1912). The battle of Giria in 1740 made Alivardi the undisputed ruler of Bengal and Bihar, and was succeeded by Siraj-ud-Dowla in 1765. The period between 1757 and 1765 was marked by the growth of the British influence in Bengal and Bihar also was thereby exposed to the same influence. The leading officers and Zamindars of Bihar were, however, not prepared to accept the new challenge: they opposed to the English dominance over Bihar and fought single-handedly against the English before allowing Bihar to go the Bengal way. After the receipt of Clive, of the Diwani Grant over Bengal, Bihar and Orissa on August 12, 1765 from Shah Alam II, the unfortunate and shadowy Emperor of Delhi, the East India Company got a definite legal status in the system of the Mughal Empire and another phase of Bihari resistance began. During the period when Raja Shitab Roy was the Naib Nizam of Bihar the Zamindars of Seres and Cotomba and Maharajah Fatah Sahi of Husainpur, fought against the company's troops but they lost against heavy odds. The author has described these various Bihari resistances and also the company's exploits in Bihar prior to their acceptance of direct responsibility for the administration of the province in 1772 after the infamous Bengal famine of 1770. Mahayana Tantra: An Introduction
Penguin; New Delhi, India; 2002; 0143028537; First Edition; Paperback; New; New; 13 Cms x 20 Cms
Tantra, considered by many as a dangerous and secret path, invariably generates a tremendous amount of curiosity. In this, the first comprehensive book of its kind, Shri Dharmakirti gives us a rare glimpse into the fascinating nature of Tantra. A practitioner of the Mahayana Buddhist Tantra uses his intellect and moral discipline to attain Buddha-hood, the highest state of existence. How to achieve this state was first shown by the Buddha and, after him, by various incarnations of Indian and Tibetan gurus such as the Dalai Lama. The author gives us a detailed account of the moral, ethical and philosophical basis of Buddhist Tantra. He also shows how the Buddhist Tantric Path of the Highest Secret Mantra decisively addresses the three crucial problems that every genuine spiritual warrior must resolve¾ problems of death, sexuality and the true nature of reality. The author discusses various facets of the Buddhist Tantric Path: its history, its harnessing of sexual energy to access subtle levels of reality, the doctrine of Karma, the concept of profound emptiness that is the philosophical core of the Buddha Dharma, and the Wheel of Existence or the Bhava-Chakra. Narrated simply and enriched with visual representations of the author’s vision of Tantra, this is an invaluable guide for those seeking a meaningful spiritual path. Printed Pages: 198. 014108

27759 Shri Krishna Sharma (Ed.)
The Shabdajyotsna of Pandit Bhiksharam: A New Sanskrit Grammer
D.K. Printworld (P) Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2013; 8124606625; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New; 15 x 23 Cm
Pt. Bihiksharam (1887–1975) composed the Shabdajyotsna with a view to teach Sanskrit grammar to an ordinary student in a simple style. The author adopts pratyahara, anuvritti, anubandha, etc. in his work to impart the abridgement on the pattern of Ashtadhyayi and Pratishakhyas. For this purpose, the author tries his best to simplify the tough process of learning Sanskrit grammar. The sutras of the Shabdajyotsna are composed subject wise (according to prakarana) on the pattern of prakriya works. Only samjna- and sandhi-prakaranas of this work were published in 1958. The rest of the text in Devanagari remained in the form of manuscript lying unattended. The script, whatever traced, was made available to Prof. Shri Krishan Sharma for the editing purposes by his grandson. However, the samasa-prakarana and some portions of taddhita-prakarana still remain untraceable. In spite of some minor gaps, the work deserves recognition and appreciation in the academic circle. The author of the Shabdajyotsna aimed at and indeed succeeded in fully exposing the rules of Sanskrit grammar in lucid and clear diction. The work, a pioneering attempt of its kind, may very well be considered as a significant contribution to the tradition of Sanskrit grammar, benefiting students, teachers and researchers alike.Printed Pages: 127. 100489

Vedas: The Source of Ultimate Science
Nag Publishers; Delhi, India; 2005; 8170816181; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New;
The purpose of this Book is to propagate Vedic thoughts throughout the world and improving the image of modern Science by showing that there is an essential harmony the spirit of Vedic WISDOM and Modern Science. This book is An Introduction to the studies of Vedic Literature in light of scientific approach. All the new truths emerging out of 20'h century through scientific discoveries have pushed science from the domain of matter to the realm of philosophy and specially the philosophy of consciousness as discovered by Vedic Rishis. Parallelism in Vedic thoughts and Modern Science has been shown in this book. The intention of drawing parallelism in Vedic thoughts and Modern Science is not to show that every thing of modern science has been understood in the past by intutions, but just to indicate that there are other methods of thinking to arrive at generalities in much the same way.This book in its eleven chapters aims at the latest explorations in different branches of science to show how science is increasingly .approaching the conclusions of the Vedic Literature. The central idea of this book is to interconnect between the picture of universe as viewed by a modern physicist and by a practitioner of Indian philosophical system and a Vedic scholar.Vedas are like a deep ocean, full of precious jewels; and whosoever dares to plunge deep into it brings out his/her wants. Everything is available here, but in concise form. The Author believes that religions of the world play a positive role for establishing world peace through inter-faith dialogue and science-religion dialogue, which is the need of the hour.Printed Pages: 480. 103944

27770 Shri Sadguru Siddharameshwar Maharaj
Master of Self-Realization
Zen Publications/D.K. Printworld (P) Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 9789384363130; Softcover; New;
His Holiness Shri Siddharameshwar Maharaj, the Spiritual Master of Shri Nisargadatta Maharaj and Shri Ranjit Maharaj gave very informal, instructional, and thought-provoking discourses on spiritual wisdom during the period from 1934 to 1936. They were based not only on scriptural texts like Dasbodh of Samartha Ramdas, Yogavasishtha, etc. but also based on his own realization. During that time while attending these discourses, Shri Nisargadatta Maharaj used to take handwritten notes. Much later in 1961-62 Nisargadatta Maharaj with the help of Shri Khanderao Sabnis, alias Bhainath Maharaj, got them published for the benefit of devotees and other interested readers. This edition was soon out of print and the publication was not available for many years. A new edition was therefore published in 2001 at the insistence of Shri Ranjit Maharaj.These 130 discourses were originally published in two volumes in Marathi, the language in which they were delivered. Shri Nisargadatta Maharaj and Shri Ranjit Maharaj, both disciples of Shri Siddharameshwar Maharaj became prominently known to non-Marathi Indian, and Western spiritual aspirants through the books I Am That (Shri Nisargadatta Maharaj) and Illusion vs. Reality (Shri Ranjit Maharaj), which were published in English. Readers of these books became therefore keen to know more about Shri Siddharameshwar Maharaj and his teaching and often requested for publication of an English translation of these discourses. We have therefore thought it fit to accede to these requests and to publish an English translation of these two volumes and thereby acquaint the non-Marathi Indian and Western aspirants with the teachings of Shri Siddharameshwar Maharaj as well. Shri Diwakar Ghaisas offered to undertake the task of English translation in the spirit of service without any reservation. Shri Diwakar Ghaisas is an accomplished author as well as translator of a number of religious and spiritual publications. He had the good fortune to listen to late Shri J. Krishnamurti for over thirty years and to translate several of Shri J. Krishnamurthi’s books into Marathi. He has also translated Dasbodh of Samarth Ramdas into lucid English. He is also well known in spiritual circles because of his own accomplishments in that field. We have therefore, entrusted this English translation to his experienced and able hands.This book contains 130 discourses of Shri Siddharameshwar Maharaj, based on scriptural texts and Self-Realization. These discourses are unique and incomparable in their sweep, clarity, directness, and instruction. Being results oriented, they are a valuable aid to devoted seekers and will help accelerate their progress towards Self-Realization. There are many references to Indian scriptures, mythological and historical characters and events, traditions and practices in these discourses, with which the non Indian reader may not be familiar. Necessary notes have therefore been provided separately to clarify the context and aid understanding and appreciation. We hope that the devotees and other readers will welcome this effort and like it. We crave their indulgence for possible errors through oversight although every effort has been made to present a flawless translation. Printed Pages: 411. 111641

The Rigveda: A Historical Analysis
Aditya Prakashan; New Delhi, India; 2015; 8177421492; Softcover; New;
The Rigveda is the oldest and most important source of material for India, Indo-Aryan, and even Indo-European history. It is a text which has been part of a hoary and widespread living tradition thousands of years old. Naturally, a text which has remained alive, as part of a living tradition, for so long cannot and should not be analysed without reference to what that tradition has to say about it. In the present volume, the author has confirmed emphatically that India was also the original homeland not only of the Indo-Aryans but also of the Indo-Iranians and the Indo-Europeans.;The author has gone directly to the primary sources without any preconceived notions, and examined as well analysed the available information with the help of traditional tools of interpretation. In this present study, he has elaborated a historical analysis of the Rigveda on the basis of genealogies of composers of the hymns preserved in the Anukramanis or indices of the Rigveda. Perspectives on Maharashtra: Cultural-Intellectual Contributions (History of Science, Philosophy and Culture in Indian Civilization, Volume VI, Part 8)
Munshiram Manoharlal Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2013; 8187586621; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New; 23 x 29 Cm
The volumes of the PROJECT ON THE HISTORY OF SCIENCE, PHILOSOPHY AND CULTURE IN INDIAN CIVILIZATION aim at discovering the main aspects of India's heritage and present them in an interrelated way. These volumes in spite of their unitary look recognize the difference between the areas of material civilization and those of ideational culture. The Project is not being executed by a single group of thinkers and writers who are methodologically uniform or ideologically identical in their commitments. In fact contributions are made by different scholars with different ideological persuasions and methodological approaches. The Project is marked by what may be called 'methodological pluralism'. In spite of its primarily historical character, this Project, both in its conceptualization and execution, has been shaped by scholars drawn from different disciplines. It is for the first time that an endeavour of such a unique and comprehensive character has been undertaken to study critically a major world civilization like India. Maharashtra, as the present State, came into existence on 1 May 1960. This volume presents the story of glorious past, going back to nearly two thousand years, and the vibrant present. During the ancient period Maharashtra was ruled by important dynasties like the Mauryas, Satavahanas (when Indo-Roman trade flourished), Vakatakas, Chalukyas, Rashtrakutas (known for contributing to art and architecture), Kalachuris, Shilaharas and Yadavas. The medieval period witnessed the arrival of the Khiljis, other Muslims dynasties and the spread of Islam, the rise of Shivaji and his fight for Hinadavi Svaraja, and the rule of the Peshwas. It was the end of the rule of the Peshwas by the British and the arrival of other Europeans that heralds the 'modern period'. The volume also covers in detail accounts of socio-religious activities and reforms, including movements for the emancipation of the 'depressed' classes and the Dalits, spearheaded by Babasaheb Ambedkar and Mahatma Gandhi. The volume is divided into six parts: I. Geography and History; II. Culture, Art and Architecture; III. Impact of other Languages on the Culture of Maharashtra; IV. Impact of other Religions on the Culture of Maharashtra; V. Education, Society, Language and Literature; VI. Philosophy. The various contributions in this volume by eminent scholars explore the interface of heterogeneous influences that have contributed to a unique synthesis of cultures that is the face of Maharashtra today. Presidential Legislation in India: The Law and Practice of Ordinances
Cambridge University Press; New Delhi, India; 2013; 1107444349; Softcover; New;
India has a parliamentary system. Yet the president has authority to occasionally enact legislation (or ordinances) without involving parliament. This book is a study of ordinances at the national level in India centered around three themes. Firstly how an artifact of British constitutional history over time became part of India's legislative system. Secondly how when and why presidents resorted to ordinances in post-independent India. Thirdly it analyzes a range of ordinance-related questions including some that are yet to be judicially adjudicated. In the process it explains why much of the Indian Supreme Court's analyses are mistaken and what should take its place. The book explains why the fate of parliamentary reforms may be tied to the reform of this provision for ordinances. Standing at the intersection of constitutional law and political science Presidential Legislation in India offers a new frame through which to understand executive's legislative powers both in parliamentary and presidential systems.Printed Pages: 278. 101449
