Promoting Economic Cooperation in South Asia: Beyond SAFTA
Sage Publications; New Delhi, India; 2010; 8132103114; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New;
Promoting Economic Cooperation in South Asia: Beyond SAFTA examines the distinct development dichotomy that exists in South Asia and tries to find a workable solution to bridge this gap. In spite of rapid economic growth since 1980, there is extensive poverty and inequality in South Asia. This dichotomy has two faces: one is highly urbanized and well-linked to global markets and the other is rural, isolated from the global economy and growing very slowly. The large bulk of South Asia’s poor live in the latter environment. The book brings together perspectives from academics, the private sector, civil society and policy makers. Using solid empirical evidence and sound analysis, it stresses that in addition to policy and institutional reforms aimed at removing domestic constraints to growth and job creation, market integration and regional cooperation ought to be key elements of a strategy for removing the dichotomy and eliminating poverty in the longer term. Delving into major political economic issues of the SAARC region, the book analyses SAFTA, bilateral FTAs, transportation, regional integration, regulatory mechanisms, food prices, labour and employment, and tourism. It also provides a political economic analysis of why past cooperation efforts have not worked and how better cooperation can be achieved in specific areas. It looks at the many policy and institutional constraints that contribute to the present state and have made South Asia one of the least integrated regions of the world. The book will be a very useful reference for researchers, scholars and bilateral and multilateral financial institutions and donor groups interested in South Asia’s development. Policy makers and think tanks focusing on economics, political science and international relations will also find it beneficial. Printed Pages: 472. 031071

Dasbodh: Spiritual Instruction for the Servant
Zen Publications/D.K. Printworld (P) Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 9789384363147; Softcover; New;
Dasbodh is a classic spiritual text that until recently has been largely unavailable in the West. The text was written in the late 17th Century by the great Saint, Shri Samartha Ramdas in the Marathi language. Marathi is the native language of Maharashtra State in India. The book was originally written in a poetic style and is presented in the format of a conversation between a Master and listeners. Many questions are answered and many doubts are cleared about non-duality and spiritual life.In Dasbodh, Samartha Ramdas presents the essence of many Vedic texts. This book is truly a manual for life, in the highest sense. It has been popular for many years in India and has only recently begun to receive recognition in the West. Dasbodh is somewhat unique among spiritual literature in that it not only expounds the classic themes of discrimination between the true and the untrue, detachment, devotion, and the nature of the Self that are commonly found in Vedic literature, but it also provides us with detailed instruction on how to function and excel in society from a place of deep spiritual understanding.Dasbodh is a large volume which is comprised of 20 Main Chapters, each consisting of 10 sub-chapters. Each of these sub-chapters varies in the number of stanzas, but averages around 30-35 stanzas per subchapter, with some being considerably longer. Contained within the chapters of Dasbodh, Ramdas clearly outlines and makes easy the path of liberation through Devotion and Knowledge. With his explanations, Ramdas is able to clear away doubts and give the understanding of one’s “True Self.” Ramdas also reveals the true meaning and significance of discrimination and detachment, and provides detailed explanations of many of the fundamental principles of Advaita Vedanta. 111624

The Essence of Islam
Concept Publishing Company Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2012; 8180698327; Hardcover; New; New;
In the current environment of global terrorism, Islam is more misunderstood than any other religion. The adherents of other faiths consider Islam as a religion that encourages violence, death, and destruction. True, many terrorists commit these heinous crimes in the name of Islam, but true Islam is a religion of love, devotion, and mercy. This is exactly what this book tries to highlight. It presents Islam in its true perspectives without compromising its basic principles.Books on Islam are many in practically all languages. It is difficult for a reader to chose, which of them are authentic and unbiased. Islam, like other religions, has many sects and each sect considers itself to be true to what Prophet of Islam taught. Authors belonging to various sects of Islam present picture of this faith that suites the philosophy of their respective sects. Often they contradict each other. Some missionaries too have published books not to introduce Islam as it really is but to prove the superiority of their own religion.Here is a book authored by a scholar who considers all religions to be great, Islam included and who feels that true Islam has nothing to do with death and destruction. In fact, it is religion of peace, love and human brotherhood. This book presents this true picture of Islam in English for all those in India or abroad, who are interested in knowing what Islam is and what it stands for. Printed Pages: 343. 112068

A History of Sufism in India: Vol. I: Early Sufism and Its History
Munshiram Manoharlal Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2012; 8121500397; Reprint; Hard Cover; New; New; 16.5 Cms x 25 Cms
This work seeks to study Sufism as a psycho-historical phenomenon. The author finds it efficacious to combat social and political upheavals which are brought about by prolonged political revolutions, associated with autocratic oppression and economic deprivation. It is divided into two volumes. The present volume outlines the history of Sufism before it was firmly established in India and then goes on to discuss the principal trends in Sufi developments therefrom the thirteenth to the beginning of the sixteenth centuries. Chronologically it is concerned with Sufi history from the establishment of the Delhi Sultanate to the beginning of the Mughal Empire. Naturally it lays great emphasis on the Chistiyya, Suhrawardiyya, Firdausiyya and Kubrawiyya orders, but the contributions made by qalandars and legendary and semi-legendary saints have also not been neglected. A detailed discussion of the interaction of medieval Hindu mystic traditions and Sufism shows a unique polarity between the intolerant rigidity of the orthodox and the flexibility of the Sufis in India. A History of Sufism in India: Vol. II: From Sixteenth Century to Modern Times
Munshiram Manoharlal Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2009; 8121500400; Fourth Impression; Hard Cover; New; New; 16.5 Cms x 25 Cms
The first volume of the History of Sufism in India outlined the history of Sufism before it was firmly established in India and then went on to discuss the principal trends in Sufi development in that country from the thirteenth to the beginning of the sixteenth century. Naturally it laid great emphasis on the Chishtiyya, Suhrawardiyya, Firdausiyya and Kubrawiyya orders, but the contributions made by Qalandars and legendary and semi-legendary saints were also discussed. The interaction of medieval Hindu mystic traditions and Sufism formed a significant chapter in that book. The present volume starts with a brief discussion of the mystical philosophy of Ibn 'Arabi, which played a pivotal role in the development of Sufic thought and practices in India, as it did in other Islamic countries. The work then deals with the Qadiriyya, Shattariyya, Naqshbandiyya and the Chishtiyya orders. It also analyses the role of Indian Sufis in the wider Islamic world, as well as Sufi perception of politics and Hinduism. Printed Pages: 548. 033810

Iran: Royalty, Religion and Revolution
Munshiram Manoharlal Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 1980; First Edition; Hard Cover; New; New; 16.5 Cms x 25 Cms
Although the history of the Iranian monarchy itself goes back 2,500 years, the periods of strong rule during important dynasties, such as the Achaemenids and the Sasanids, were very short-lived. After the Arab conquest in the reign of 'Omar (634-644), Iran was ruled first from Medina and then from Damascus and later from Baghdad. Later still, Iran was ruled largely by Turkish and Mongol invaders. The Iranian people had never, however, hesitated to resist tyrannous rule. From the time of the legendary Kaveh in Ferdowsi's Shahnama to that of Ayatollahol 'Ozma Rouhollah Khomeini, the Iranian masses have struggled to establish a just and dynamic society. There has been no dearth of counter-revolutions, demagogues and impostors either. Many revolutions designed to overthrow despotism culminated in a new tyranny leading to a fresh revolution. Although the present work describes all important rebellions, revolutions and terrorist activities in Iran, it sees revolution only in terms of those human endeavours which fulfill a crucial function in the development of society; and does not seek to pass moral judgments. The work is also designed to analyse the process of reconstruction and revolution within the framework of the political, religious, literary and artistic development of Iran. Muslim Revivalist Movements in Northern India: In the Sixteenth and Seventeenth Centuries
Munshiram Manoharlal Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2014; 8121505909; Reprint; Hardcover; New; New; 15 x 23 Cm
Focussing on the controversy surrounding the Wahdat-ul-Wujud (Unity of Being, All is He) of Ibn 'Arabi (1165-1240) and the Wahdat-ush-Shuhud (Unity of Appearance, All is from Him) of Shaikh 'Alaud-Dawla Simnani (1261-1336), the work goes on to analyse the impact of the above ideologies on the teachings of early Chishtiyas, Suhrawardiyas, Firdausiyas and Shattariyas. It then discusses the impact of the Islamic millennium and the messianic movements on the body-politic of Islam in India, culminating with the Mahdawi movement in the realm of religion and the Sulh-i-Kul (Universal peace and concord) of Akbar the Great in the realm of politics and government. The study of Muslim revivalist movements in Northern India that emerged as a reaction to the pressure of the movements mentioned above, is the principal objective of the present book. Their pioneers such as Shaikh 'Abdul Haq Muhaddis Dehlawi (1515-1642) and Mujaddid Alf-i-Sani Shaikh Ahmad Sirhindi (1564-1624) differed widely in their ideologies and practices. Shaikh 'Abdul Haq proceeded cautiously, while Mujaddid made strenuous efforts to convert the Mughal noblemen to his puritanically Islamic teachings. Naturally such a study is bound to be studded with controversial judgements but the author’s presentation of the vast source material on the subject has aroused considerable interest among the independent and objective thinkers, in the Muslim religious movements of India. India-Pakistan Composite Dialogue Process: Issues and Action
Kalpaz Publications/Gyan Books Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2015; 9789351280866; Hardcover; New; New;
India and Pakistan started the Composite Dialogue Process (CDP) in 1997 when at Male, the capital of the Maldives, the then Indian Prime Minister Inder Kumar Gujral and his Pakistani counterpart Nawaz Sharif proposed the idea of a structured dialogue. Initially the dialogue process became the casualty of the 1999 Kargil war and the subsequent attack on the Indian Parliament in 2001.However, since April 2003 it has progressed steadily till the November 26, 2008 Mumbai terror attacks when the dialogue process was suspended for a long time. This book dwells upon the history of the peace process since its inception in 1997 and examines the progress made in the eight baskets of issues namely, Peace and Security including Confidence Building Measures (CBMs); Jammu and Kashmir (J&K); Siachen; Wullar Barrage/Tulbul Navigation Project; Sir Creek; Economic and Commercial Cooperation; Terrorism and Drug Trafficking; and, Promotion of Friendly Exchanges in Various Fields. Amongst the major achievements of Composite Dialogue can be cited a number of Confidence Building Measures related to peace and security; enhanced people to people contacts through bus and train services; continuation of ceasefire along the LoC since 2003; setting up of the Judicial Committee to look into the humanitarian issue of civilian prisoners/fishermen held in each other's jails and substantial growth on the trade front.Printed Pages: 178. 106170

Beyond Humanism: Philosophical Essays on Environmental Ethics
Concept Publishing Company Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2014; 9789351251064; Hardcover; New; New;
All the major ethical theories in the Western philosophical tradition-from Socrates and Plato, through Aristotelian virtue ethics and Kantian deontology, to utilitarianism-have disagreed about two related ideas: what it means to be human and what it means to relate morally to the other. However, all of these traditions have shared the basic assumption that the morally significant other is human: family, friends, fellow citizens, or fellow human beings. This is true even when these moral relationships are established or supported by God. Given this tradition, any deep shift in our relationship to nature will require a new understanding of what it means for human beings to relate to the natural world and to live a moral life as part of that world. The present volume, a conglomerate of number of historical and Philosophical essays from Scholars of different regions of India, do present varieties of perspectives on environment. It is a comprehensive attempt to understand the ethical response humans ought to have towards nature. The pernicious degradation on the environment results in a threat to the existence of life itself on the earth. The ‘wakeup call’, though late, is an effort to let the world know about the need to create an awareness among the so called ‘rationales’ of the moral values attached to various ingredients of the nature of which he is a part. Perspectives on Mughal India: Rulers, Historians, 'Ulma and Sufis'
Oxford University Press; New Delhi, India; 2012; 0195476433; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New; 15 x 23 Cm
This collection aims to demonstrate that rigorous historical analysis should lead to a better understanding of socio-political developments in their respective historical contexts. Beginning with an overview of the expansion of Islam in the Indo-Pakistan subcontinent, it goes on to discover the pearls of wisdom on the art of governance through a perceptive study of historical works and didactic literature, and Islamic "Mirrors for Princes. " It then introduces the reader to the spiritual life of the Naqshbandi Sufis and provides glimpses of their lives, as they lived. Against the backdrop of political crises and social disorder during the later period of Mughal rule, it adeptly portrays the role of Naqshbandi Sufis and 'ulama ' in spearheading the revitalization and genuine understanding of the practices of Islam. The ascendancy of Shi 'ism in Emperor Jahangir 's administration (1606-1627), is amply demonstrated in an account of the rise of Baqir Najm-i Sani, a Shi 'i migr from Iran to India - a man of sword and pen - who rose to become a powerful noble in Jahangir 's administration (1605-1627). Over hundred years later, as the Mughal Empire declined, sectarian squabbles between Shi 'is and Sunnis are succinctly captured in an analysis of the discourses of Naqshbandi Sufis and Sunni 'ulama 's. Bhagavad-Gita: The Ambrosial ‘Sat-Song’ of Sri Krishna
Zen Publications/D.K. Printworld (P) Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 8188071978; Softcover; New;
Although Pandu’s son Arjuna was widely known as one who in combat could single-handedly fight and defeat 1,000 opposing warriors simultaneously, he was twice traumatized and brought to his knees on the battlefield of Kurukshetra. The first time was upon seeing countless loved ones eager for bloodshed on both sides of the impending fray. The second was upon discovering that his own charioteer, a bosom friend since adolescence, could not only speak about the experience of awakening to one’s true nature, but could also provide the experience of beholding the infinite form of the one universal Self. Complete with word-for-word transliteration, this new presentation of India’s timeless spiritual classic illuminates many subtle details which readers may find themselves either relishing for the very first time, or revisiting with a new level of penetration and appreciation. “More than just beautifully translating the Gita, Sajohn Daverly sublimely transmits the mystery of awakened life in human circumstances. We can read his translation of this ancient, divine text and find it alive in our own hearts, here, today.”- Gangaji, spiritual teacher and author of The Diamond In Your Pocket “This Gita is a real gem because it builds a bridge between the traditional approach and the very contemporary one, bringing the ancient teaching to life and making it relevant to the modern reader.”- Adyashanti, spiritual teacher and author of Falling Into Grace“ Sajohn’s direct knowing and immersion in the unknown gives him the unique authority to explain and clarify in scholarly terms the profound understanding linking the essential truth and alignment between Vedanta and Zen Buddhism.”- Jon Bernie, contemporary Zen teacher and author of Ordinary Freedom. The Shambhala Principle: Discovering Humanity`s Hidden Treasure
Shambhala Publication/TBI; New Delhi, India; 0804140227; Softcover; New;
The book revolves around a dialogue with my father, the legendary Chögyam Trungpa. Whether his responses were direct or mystical, he continuously returned to the topics of basic goodness and enlightened society. Not only did he show me how I could become confident in their existence through awareness and meditation, he also taught me how basic goodness is a socially viable standard that could stabilize and transform our world. However, this book is not a memoir, or even a message. It is an invitation to readers to reflect on their own basic goodness and the basic goodness of society, and then contemplate the question, Can we rouse our energy and confidence to create a good world that is founded on this principle? Darfur and the Crisis of Governance in Sudan: A Critical Reader
Cornell University Press; Ithaca, New York, USA; 2009; 0801475945; First Edition; Paperback; New; 18 x 24 Cm
The ongoing conflict in the western Sudanese region of Darfur has received unprecedented attention from the international media and human rights organizations, and it has captured the attention of millions of people around the world. Those seeking to learn about the conflict, as well as those who have reported on it, often rely on information produced by the various organizations that are addressing the humanitarian crises spawned by the conflict. In turn, most coverage of the Darfur crisis provides only a cursory understanding of the historical, economic, political, sociological, and environmental factors that contribute to the conflict. Moreover, the perspectives of the people of Darfur and the Sudan have not been adequately heard. As a result, Sudanese civil society’s active engagement in resolving the country’s problems goes unrecognized. Darfur and the Crisis of Governance in Sudan remedies this situation by bringing together a diverse group of contributors from Sudan and beyond—scholars, activists, NGO and aid workers, members of government and the Darfurian rebel movements, and artists—who share a deep knowledge of the situation in Darfur and Sudan. Together, they provide the most comprehensive, balanced, and nuanced account yet published of the conflict’s roots and the contemporary realities that shape the experiences of those living in the region. The cross-disciplinary dialogue fostered by Salah M. Hassan and Carina E. Ray yields a comprehensive understanding of the causes, manifestations, and implications of the ongoing conflict. Many of the contributors emphasize that despite the international attention Darfur has received, it is those within Darfur and Sudan—both in preexisting organizations and in newly formed alliances—who have taken the lead in seeking local solutions. This book features a portfolio of affecting full-color photographs of daily life in Darfur by the acclaimed photographer Issam A. Abdelhafiez and, significantly, an extensive appendix of official local and international documents about the conflict—laws, decrees, resolutions, reports, and governmental statements—that have shaped both the crisis and its global perception. Collected here for the first time, these documents are invaluable as primary sources for researchers, students, activists, NGOs, and anyone else trying to understand the complexities of the crisis. A Dictionary of Muslim Names
Hurst & Company; London, UK; 1850653577; First Edition; Paperback; New;
The resurgence and revitalisation of Mulsim culture have created a growing interest in the sudy of Muslim names. Throughout the world Muslims share similar names, be they in the Middle East, the Indian subcontinent, South-East Asia or new migrants in the West. And it should not be forgotten that the first thing Allah taught Adam was names. The predominant language in Muslim names is Arabic, followed by Persian (Farsi), the two major languages which transmitted Muslim culture in its early stages and later expansion. An important source of Mulsim names consists of the ninety-nine attributes of Allah mentioned in the Qur'an and the hadith. According to Islamic belief, the relationship between man and his Creator is that of servant and master, and therefore a Muslim feels gratified to be named as a servant of one of the attributes of Allah. The purpose of this dictionary is to give the meaning or bearing on Islamic heritage of the words, Arabic or Persian, which form parts of Muslim names. By way of illustration, it gives references to Muslims who left their mark on history in different ages, in different fields, and in various parts of the world. Where appropriate, The Qur'an is cited. Therefore it is not merely a compilation of Mulsim names but a reference work pertaining to the broad field of Islam. For most people, a name appears more significant when it is identified as having been borne by an Imam, a Khalifa, a Mujahid (fighter for the cause of Islam), a Sultan, a saint, an author or a jurist who shaped the history of Islam. Many Muslims with names that comprise Arabic or Persian words are unaware of their meaning or bearing on Islamic heritage, particularly if they are unfamiliar with these languages. It is important for parents and guardians to devote time to selecting suitable names for children by consulting authentic books on manes and re-checking them from standard Arabic-English and/or Perian-English dictionaries. This dictionary simplifies this process. Contents Introduction Male Names Female Names Bibliography. Printed Pages: 367. 027166

Management Development: A Psychological Approach
Gyan Books Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 1993; 8121204445; Hardcover; New; New;
This book presents a Framework which facilitates Designing need-based, result oriented Management Development interventions. The Human Resource Development may be optimized in Organizations in General and public sector organizations in particular on the Recommendations made in the book. The HRD may be optimized in public sector organizations especially the loss-incurring sick organizations units through strategies and approaches suggested in the book. The latest Humanistic Organism perspective offered by management researchers and practitioners has vital global applicability potential. Based on this perspective a Research Study was carried out and the Results strongly support the Humanistic organismic perspective. Perceptions of training experience of managers is found to be influenced crucially by psychological correlates, personality variables, individual differences and attitudes. Unfortunately, the psychological Bases to behaviour have not been given due Importance and therefore interventions in Management Development need to be given adequate importance to these bases. The study strongly support the hypothesis that Perception of training experience of managers can be predicted by psychological correlates. The book provides an interesting reading and an insight into design of meaningful and enriching Management Development interventions for managers who are responsible to bring about total HRD in an organization. The study thus becomes an important hallmark to bring about HRD and its Optimization in public sector organizations especially the sick public sector units which are presently causing greater concern to the government.Printed Pages: 214. 105768

A Narrative of Communal Politics: Uttar Pradesh 1937-39
Sage Publications; New Delhi, India; 2001; 0761995056; First Edition; Cloth; New; New; 5.5" x 8.5"
The promulgation of the Government of India Act of 1935 not only reinforced the phenomenon of separate electorates on the basis of religion but led to a dramatic change in the nature of communalism in the Indian subcontinent. This is the story of how the different political forces in Uttar Pradesh—the Congress, the Muslim League, the landlords and the Hindu Mahasabha—responded to the new context, and how they strove to establish control over the available political space. This seminal work is a significant departure from other studies of the period, in that it addresses communalism as an independent force, acutely conscious of its interests and very keen on preserving itself, and not allied to either the Congress or the British. Westland Limited; New Delhi, India; 9789385152924; Softcover; New;
When Salil Tripathi began writing a travel column for a well known newspaper, he consciously decided to veer off the beaten track and not showcase the food and drink or the fabulous hotels and world class restaurants of a country. Instead, it was his insights into a place that defined a country and its people when viewed from the prism of history, culture and literature.Culled from his extensive travel writings, Detours: Songs of the Open Road is split into three parts, the first section called, War & After is a riveting account of places that were shattered due to terrible wars or human rights violations; the second titled, Words & Images, about places he visualised better because certain writers or artists made those places fascinating; and the third called Loss & Remembrance, is a wonderful personal journey about countries he visited with his wife who died in 2006 and which he later revisited with his sons as remembrance to a beloved.Detours: Songs of the Open Road is a remarkable travel diary of a man who holds your hand and takes you through fascinating journeys which you make your own by the end of his travel. 109741

The Illustrated Salim Ali: The Fall of a Sparrow
Oxford University Press; New Delhi, India; 2007; 0195687477; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New; 15 x 23 Cm
The Fall of a Sparrow tells the real life story of adventure and self-discovery of Sálim Ali, India’s original bird man. Chronicling an era gone by and vividly describing forgotten landscapes, this engaging tale describes how a childhood curiosity for nature and an intrepid adventuring spirit led to an unusual career choice. Eighty-seven at the time of writing and an internationally renowned figure, Ali vividly describes his childhood adventures in the wild and subsequent expeditions to almost every part of the Indian subcontinent. The birdwatching stories are interspersed with lively details of family life and youthful adventuring. The more than 100 visuals—comprising photographs, line drawings, and paintings of birds by past masters like G.M. Henry, J.P. Irani, and C.J.F. Coombs—are an unusual feature of this adapted edition. These paintings were originally prepared for the ten-volume Handbook of the Birds of India and Pakistan (OUP, 1971) which continues to be in print even today. The colour plate section, featuring some of these paintings in their original avatar, makes this illustrated edition a delight both for young readers and for collectors. 027229

The Book of Indian Birds 13th Edition
Oxford University Press; New Delhi, India; 2003; 0195665236; Thirteenth Edition; Hard Cover; New; New;
This much-awaited revised edition includes the extensive changes in the scientific and common bird names that have taken place since the last revision in 1996. Following the publication, in 2001, of the list of Standardized Common and Scientific Names of the Birds of the Indian Subcontinent in the Buceros 6 (1), the common and scientific names have been modified based on this list. It is expected that this will provide uniformity in the names used throughout the Subcontinent and outside, and help birdwatchers to communicate better while exchanging their observations. The Alternate Common Names given in the earlier edition have been removed. The Index of common names of species, giving plate and serial numbers, has been replaced with separate Indexes of Scientific and Common names according to page numbers. Minor errors that were overlooked in the earlier edition have also been rectified. Dr. Salim Ali last revised and enlarged the BOOK OF INDIAN BIRDS in 1979 when the eleventh edition was published. This edition described and illustrated 296 species, and was last published in 1992. Thereafter, it was decided that the Book should be enlarged to cover the common and interesting birds of all biogeographic zones in India to make the book a useful field guide for the Subcontinent. This revised and enlarged edition of the book is being brought out to commemorate the centenary of Dr. Salim Ali and his seminal contribution to the popularisation of the study of birds in India, which began with the publication of the 1st edition of the BOOK OF INDIAN BIRDS fifty-four years ago, in 1941. The edition covers 538 species, the descriptions of which have been compiled from Dr. Salim Ali s writings to maintain the same style and format. The illustrations are new and have been specially prepared for this edition by the noted bird artist Carl D Silva except for one plate on the mynas which was prepared by Dr. Salim Ali s favourite bird illustrator Mr. J. P. Irani. The 538 species have been accommodated in 64 plates. Each of the species illustrated in the plates has been provided with brief captions giving status, whether resident or migratory, size and form, key identification characters, habitat and distribution. The book ends, as did the earlier editions, with Dr. Salim Ali s notes on nesting, migration, bird watching, etc. The book remains a guide to the beginner and a handy reference for the serious amateur as well as for the professional ornithologists. The Kama Sutra Diaries: Intimate Journeys Through Modern India
Westland Limited; New Delhi, India; 9789383260942; Softcover; New;
Sally Howard, a self-confessed child of the Western Sexual Revolution, sets out on a ‘Sexploration’ through modern India by train, plane and auto-rickshaw. From the heat of anti-rape protest on the streets of New Delhi to the cool hills of Shimla, playground of the Raj from a Gujarati retirement home for gay men and eunuchs to a busy sex clinic in Chennai from patriarchs to matriarchs, GIGs (Good Indian Girls), BIGs (Bad Indian Girls) and the fleshpots of Bombay, she accompanied by feisty Delhi girl Dimple lifts the bed sheets on India’s sexual revolution. And it’s a revolution that’s full of fascinating surprises and contrasts for India – the land that gave us the exuberant guide to sexual pleasure, the Kama Sutra is also a land where women remain cloistered in purdah while teenage girls check out porn online where families bow down to a conjoined phallus and vagina, the ‘Shivaling’, while couples fear to hold hands in public and where the loveless arranged marriage is still the norm. Colourful, compelling, confounding, The Kama Sutra Diaries reveals what India has to tell us about modern-day love, sex and sexuality.‘Absolutely riveting. I could not put it down. Everything you wanted to know about sex in India, but never dared to ask.’ – Mark Shand, author of Travels on my Elephant and winner of the Travel Writer of the Year award. 109650

Cutting Free: The Extraordinary Memoir of a Pakistani Women
Lotus/Roli Books; New Delhi, India; 8174365044; Softcover; New;
Beginning with a privileged childhood in an elite family of pre-partition India, to a troubled youth in Pakistan, this is the inspiring story of Salma Ahmed - a woman who surmounted formidable odds to achieve extraordinary success in business and politics. In this strikingly honest and candid account, Salma talks of her three marriages - to a naval officer, a scion of a leading feudal family, and a cricketing star; her conflicts as a mother as she makes the agonising decision to give up two of her six children; and her efforts to build a career as an entrepreneur and political figure in an emerging Pakistan. As she recounts the events of a life filled with dramatic highs and equally painful lows, she does not spare herself any more than she does other players in her story.This is a book that unabashedly reveals many of the hidden taboos of contemporary Pakistani society, bringing into question customs that are an integral, if unpleasant, part of subcontinental culture. Salma Ahmed's gripping narration of her political career is fast-paced and often amusing. The book relates events of the 1985 Assembly, which no other author has yet commented on. Her interaction with the late President Zia-ul-Haq and Prime Minister Mohammad Khan Junejo, MQM leader Altaf Hussain, the charismatic Pir Sahib Pagaro, and several others, gave her a unique opportunity to witness first-hand the intrigue, power plays and unfolding drama of Pakistani politics. Her frequent visits to India brought her into contact with Indira Gandhi, her son Rajiv, and many other leading figures of the sub-continent. This is the absorbing tale of a woman who was a pampered child, an unhappy wife, a repentant mother - but one who emerged triumphant as a woman of substance, in business and politics. The Syntax of Chichewa
Cambridge University Press; Cambridge, UK; 2004; 0521573785; First Edition; Hard Cover; New; New; 228 x 152 Mm
This comprehensive book provides a detailed description of the major syntactic structures of Chichewa. Assuming no prior knowledge of current theory, it covers topics such as relative clause and question formation, interactions between tone and syntactic structure, aspects of clause structure such as complementation, and phonetics and phonology. It also provides a detailed account of argument structure, in which the role of verbal suffixation is examined. Sam Mchombo’s description is supplemented by observations about how the study of African languages, specifically Bantu languages, has contributed to progress in grammatical theory, including the debates that have raged within linguistic theory about the relationship between syntax and the lexicon, and the contributions of African linguistic structure to the evaluation of competing grammatical theories. Clearly organised and accessible, The Syntax of Chichewa will be an invaluable resource for students interested in linguistic theory and how it can be applied to a specific language. • Clearly written and accessible • Author has unparalleled expertise on Chichewa, with good balance of coverage and depth • Includes rich referencing of contemporary African literature on Bantu Contents 1. Development Under Stress: Sri Lankan Economy in Transition
Sage Publications; New Delhi, India; 2007; 0761935363; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New;
Sri Lanka is credited with being the pioneer of economic liberalisation in South Asia. Why, then, is economic progress painfully slow with the outcome being far below the country’s potential? This book examines the process of development and the implementation of reforms in Sri Lanka after the economic liberalisation of 1977. The author shows that while part of the story lies in the ongoing conflict in the North-East, which has lasted over 20 years, there are a number of other factors which have impeded economic progress, thereby, designating it development under stress The book describes the key features of the Sri Lankan socio-political and economic system that prevented the country from achieving higher levels of economic growth. It explains why the country could not match the economic achievements of South Korea and Malaysia— countries that had similar per capita income levels to that of Sri Lanka in the 1950s. The author focuses on five core themes: - Economic development since Independence - The debate on economic liberalisation - Macroeconomic management - Sectoral policy - Employment and poverty. South Asia in the WTO
Sage Publications; New Delhi, India; 2008; 0761936149; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New;
South Asia, with its large population, has emerged as an important player in the WTO and the current negotiations under the Doha Round. Nevertheless, the countries in the region face a formidable challenge in analyzing and synthesizing proposals and submissions made by other WTO members. Previous studies have looked at the subject from a WTO issues-based perspective but not necessarily from the country capacity perspective. In this book the contributors examine the position of each South Asian country in the multilateral trading system as defined by the WTO and highlight various concerns they have on key WTO issues in agriculture, industry, services and development. The possibility of South Asian countries formulating a common position in the WTO negotiations is also explored in detail. This book is useful for academics, policy makers, civil society activists, undergraduate students of Development Economics and anyone with an interest in the WTO vis-a-vis South Asia. Trade in Services in South Asia: Opportunities and Risks of Liberalization
Sage Publications; New Delhi, India; 2009; 8178299372; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New;
This collection of essays explores the opportunities and risks of the liberalization of trade in services in South Asia. It offers an overview of the entire region on market access and regulatory issues as defined by the GATS framework of the WTO and exposes areas for regional and bilateral liberalization. It provides policymakers and other stakeholders in the region with better comprehension of the problems pertaining to these, and consequently, shows them a clearer vision of how to overcome them. The compilation provides insight into the offensive and defensive interests in trade in services of the whole region. The essays survey the formidable challenges that South Asia faces—cost implications, “policy space” restrictions, stakeholder managing—while trying to comply with the GATS regulations on the one hand, and the often inadequate legal provisions and regulatory structures of the individual countries, on the other. It will hold great value for students, researchers, and faculty working in the fields of Economics and Development Studies and South Asia Studies, besides being a useful resource for policy makers. This Divided Island: Stories from the Sri Lankan War
Penguin Books India Pvt. Ltd.; Delhi, India; 2014; 0670086037; Hardcover; New; New;
In the summer of 2009, the leader of the dreaded Tamil Tiger guerrillas was killed, bringing to a bloody end the stubborn and complicated civil war in Sri Lanka. For nearly thirty years, the war’s fingers had reached everywhere: into the bustle of Colombo, the Buddhist monasteries scattered across the island, the soft hills of central Sri Lanka, the curves of the eastern coast near Batticaloa and Trincomalee, and the stark, hot north. With its genius for brutality, the war left few places, and fewer people, untouched.What happens to the texture of life in a country that endures such bitter conflict? What happens to the country’s soul? Samanth Subramanian gives us an extraordinary account of the Sri Lankan war and the lives it changed. Taking us to the ghosts of summers past, and to other battles from other times, he draws out the story of Sri Lanka today—an exhausted, disturbed society, still hot from the embers of the war. Through travels and conversations, he examines how people reconcile themselves to violence, how religion and state conspire, how the powerful become cruel, and how victory can be put to the task of reshaping memory and burying histories.Printed Pages: 336. 103395
