The Buddhist Art of Kausambi
D.K. Printworld (P) Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2003; 8124602263; First Edition; Hard Cover; New; New; 23 Cms x 29 Cms
One of the major centres of Buddhist art in ancient times, Kausambi provides evidence of an uninterrupted art tradition spanning centuries. Pointing to the scant attention Kausambi has received from scholars in the past, this work attempts to highlight its art treasures through a study of its stone sculptures. Based on scrutiny of stone sculptures found at various sites in Kausambi and its vicinity and housed in different museums, it presents perhaps the first extensive documentation of the Buddhist art of the region from the Mauryan to post-Gupta period. It examines in detail over 300 stone sculptures, paying special attention to their iconographic features, types of stone, techniques of carving, grinding and polishing and their aesthetic appeal. All this comes with a background throwing light on the history of Kausambi and its association with Buddhism, the early archaeological explorations in the region, and the individuality and uniqueness of Kausambi art as compared to Mathura and Sarnath schools. The book presents over 225 black-and-white and over 50 coloured photographs of Buddhist sculptures which are neatly classified and systematically analysed. It would prove invaluable to scholars and students of Buddhist art. Printed Pages: 364 with 2 maps, 322 b/w photos and 54 coloured illustrations. 010688

Eating God: A Book of Bhakti Poetry
Penguin Books India Pvt. Ltd.; Delhi, India; 2014; 0670087599; Softcover; New;
The seeker’s impassioned yearning for the Divine, unmediated—here and now— is the essence of bhakti. As old as time, its spirit suffused the outpourings of mystic poets across India from the eighth century onward. Their compositions—passionate, sensuous, intimate, often articulated in regional languages and dialects—spoke to cobbler and priest alike, and have embedded themselves in our collective unconscious. The two-hundred-odd poems in this volume remind us of this rich palette of human longing: from the trenchant irony of Kabir and audacious sensuality of Annamayya and Chandidas to the earthy mysticism of Tukaram and fierce lyricism of Mira and Akka Mahadevi. We travel the emotional arc of bhakti, from wild longing to liberation, through these utterances and many more. Featuring classic translations by A.K. Ramanujan and Dilip Chitre, among others, as well as new and unpublished ones by acclaimed poets, Eating God is a fabulous treat for seekers and poetry lovers alike.Printed Pages: 256. 103423

The Algebra of Infinite Justice
Penguin; New Delhi, India; 2002; 014302907X; Revised Edition; Paperback; New; 14 Cms x 22 Cms
few weeks after India detonated a thermonuclear device in 1998, Arundhati Roy wrote ‘The End of Imagination’. The essay attracted worldwide attention as the voice of a brilliant Indian writer speaking out with clarity and conscience against nuclear weapons. Over the next three and a half years, she wrote a series of political essays on a diverse range of momentous subjects: from the illusory benefits of big dams, to the downside of corporate globalization and the US Government’s war against terror. First published in 2001, The Algebra of Infinite Justice brings together all of Arundhati Roy’s political writings so far. This revised paperback edition includes two new essays, written in early 2002: ‘Democracy: Who’s She When She’s at Home’, that examines the horrific communal violence in Gujarat, and ‘War Talk: Summer Games with Nuclear Bombs’, about the threat of nuclear war in the Subcontinent. ‘Each essay is an elaborately argued thesis..simultaneously both profound and poetic.’ Newstime ‘(Arundhati Roy’s) essays glitter with sentences that remain etched in the mind-Roy's politics remains clear-voiced and fearless, large in scope, consistent in its concern for the exploited, scathing in its criticism of the state and its institutions’ he Telegraph Printed Pages: 384. 023057

The Ministry of Utmost Happiness
Penguin Books India Pvt. Ltd.; Delhi, India; 067008963X; Hardcover; New; New; 15 x 22 Cm
"How to tell a shattered story? By slowly becoming everybody. No. By slowly becoming everything.' The Ministry of Utmost Happiness takes us on a journey of many years---the story spooling outwards from the cramped neighbourhoods of Old Delhi into the burgeoning new metropolis and beyond, to the Valley of Kashmir and the forests of Central India, where war is peace and peace is war, and where, from time to time, 'normalcy' is declared. Anjum, who used to be Aftab, unrolls a threadbare carpet in a city graveyard that she calls home. A baby appears quite suddenly on a pavement, a little after midnight, in a crib of litter. The enigmatic S. Tilottama is as much of a presence as she is an absence in the lives of the three men who loved her. The Ministry of Utmost Happiness is at once an aching love story and a decisive remonstration. It is told in a whisper, in a shout, through tears and sometimes with a laugh. Its heroes are people who have been broken by the world they live in and then rescued, mended by love---and by hope. For this reason, they are as steely as they are fragile, and they never surrender. This ravishing, magnificent book reinvents what a novel can do and can be. And it demonstrates on every page the miracle of Arundhati Roy's storytelling gifts." Printed Pages: 456. 114560

Coins of the Great Kushanas
Parimal Publications; Delhi, India; 1996; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New;
The Great Kushanas, a branch of Yue-Chin tribe, ruled over a wide spread area stretching from part of the territory now in Soviet Central Asia to the interior of the Indian subcontinent. They issued different types of COINS in gold, silver and copper which are an important source to know about them. Its study begins in 1830 with the discoveries of coins from Manikiyala Tope (Punjab) by Gen. Ventura, an army officer in the service of Ranjit Singh. After that several coins of the Kushanas have been discovered and the studies of scholars contributed much in the field of the Kushana numismatics. The scope of the present work is to compile and present in a systematic manner the varied evidence of the Kushana Coinage in regard to the representation of king, deities, headdress and clothing, legend, script, symbol, technique and to list the coin-types of the Great Kushanas. The survey will be useful for the student to study them with interest alongwith their detailed description and illustration.Printed Pages: 119. 103181

Collected Poems (1969-2014)
Penguin Books India Pvt. Ltd.; Delhi, India; 2014; 0143420844; Hardcover; New;
Gathering the work of a lifetime, spanning four books of poetry, and including thirty-four new poems, Collected Poems is the first comprehensive collection of the work of one of India’s most influential English language poets. Arvind Krishna Mehrotra’s poetry has long been known for its mixing of the commonplace and the strange, the autobiographical and the fabulous, in which the insignificant details of everyday life-whether contemporary or historical-bring larger patterns into focus. Mehrotra’s celebrated translations from Indian languages (Prakrit, Hindi, Gujarati, Bengali) take up a third of Collected Poems. Selections from The Absent Traveller and Songs of Kabir are followed by those of Nirala, Vinod Kumar Shukla, Mangalesh Dabral, Pavankumar Jain and Shakti Chattopadhyay. Together they tell the story of Indian poetry over two millennia.Printed Pages: 240. 103456

The Absent Traveller: Prakrit Love Poetry from the Gathasaptasati of Satavahana Hala
Penguin; New Delhi, India; 2008; 0143100807; First Edition; Paperback; New; 15 x 23 Cm
‘They read beautifully. The translations are witty, terse, spare, memorable. At last the Ga-tha-saptas'ati- has found a translator.’—A.K. Ramanujan The Ga-tha-saptas'ati- is perhaps the oldest extant anthology of poetry from South Asia, containing our very earliest examples of secular verse. Reputed to have been compiled by the Sa-tava-hana king Ha-la in the second century CE, it is a celebrated collection of 700 verses in Maharashtri Pra-krit, composed in the compact, distilled ga-tha- form. The anthology has attracted several learned commentaries and now, through Arvind Krishna Mehrotra’s acclaimed translation of 207 verses from the anthology, readers of English at last have access to its poems. The speakers are mostly women and, whether young or old, married or single, they touch on the subject of sexuality with frankness, sensitivity and, every once in a while, humour, which never ceases to surprise. The Absent Traveller includes an elegant and stimulating translator’s note and an afterword by Martha Ann Selby that provides an admirable introduction to Pra-krit literature in general and the Ga-tha-saptas'ati- in particular. The story of queer people in India has, so far, been written and lived along the fault lines and margins of Indian history, but now the search for another moment of assertion is gaining momentum, and this anthology represents precisely that moment. The essays in this volume are a celebration, a defiant political resistance, and introspective reflection and a conceptual space. They talk of the past, present and future of queer lives, and share stories of pain, joy, struggle and victory in equal measure. They are the voice of a community that refuses to be silenced. Complemented by an illustrated documentation section, this unique anthology will be of great interest to students and scholars of gender studies, sexuality studies, and sociology, NGOs and voluntary organizations working with issues of sexuality and AIDS, as well as every informed lay reader who believes in difference rather than uniformity. Arvind Narrain graduated from the National Law School of India University, and did his LLM from Warwick University. He is currently working as a part of a collective of lawyers at the Alternative Law Forum based in Bangalore, a young group working on a critical practice of law. He is the author of Queer: Despised Sexuality, Law and Social Change. Gautam Bhan is a queer rights activist and writer based in New Delhi who writes extensively on queer issues and social movements. Gandhi: A Spiritual Biography
Hachette; New Delhi, India; 2013; 9789350097144; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New; 15 x 23 Cm
In his Autobiography, Gandhi wrote, What I want to achieve what I have been striving and pining to achieve these thirty years is self-realization, to see God face to face. All that I do by way of speaking and writing and all my ventures in the political field are directed to this same end.' While hundreds of biographies and histories have been written about Gandhi (1869 - 1948), nearly all of them have focused on the national, political, social, economic, educational, ecological or familial dimensions of his life. Very few in recounting how Gandhi led his country to political freedom, have viewed his struggle primarily as a search for spiritual liberation. Shifting the focus to the understudied subject of Gandhis spiritual life, Arvind Sharma retells the story of Gandhis life through this lens. Illuminating unsuspected dimensions of Gandhis inner world and uncovering their surprising connections with his outward actions, Sharma explores the eclectic religious atmosphere in which Gandhi was raised, his belief in karma and rebirth, his conviction that morality and religion are synonymous, his attitudes toward tyranny and freedom and perhaps most important, the mysterious source of his power to establish new norms of human conduct. This book enlarges our understanding of one of historys most profoundly influential figures, a man whose trust in the power of the spirit helped liberate millions. Printed Pages: 264. 037710

Reservation and Affirmative Action: Models of Social Integration in India and the United States
Sage Publications; New Delhi, India; 2008; 8178298589; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New;
This book examines the principles underlining the policies of reservation and affirmative action adopted by two non-homogeneous and multi-ethnic societies—India and the USA. Despite the fact that the governments of both countries have, for over fifty years now, applied these measures to overcome discrimination based on caste and race respectively, the author maintains that there is no comprehensive account of the grounds on which either reservations or affirmative action can be intellectually justified. Addressing the key question—What is being affirmed through affirmative action?—the author seeks the answer along four lines: - What is the religious component of such an affirmation, if any? - Is there a moral principle (or principles) underlying this affirmation? - Is this affirmation being advocated on the basis of ethical principles with which modern liberal thought is imbued? - Is the doctrine of human rights invoked in such an affirmation? Hinduism and Its Sense of History
Oxford University Press; New Delhi, India; 2003; 0195665317; First Edition; Hard Cover; New; New; 15 Cms x 23 Cms
It is virtually an axiom in the study of Hindu religion and culture that the Hindus lived in a mythic universe and lacked a sense of history. This book, which is in four parts, examines this proposition in detail. The book begins by considering the emergence of the axiom itself, and goes on to explore the pervasive role this axiom has played in virtually all fields of Indian studies, from historiography to literature studies. The author then catalogues and examines the various responses this alleged absence of a historcal sense on the part of the Hindus has evoked. He concludes, however, that despite its pervasiveness, the assumption cannot be sustained in the light of historical evidence, and contends that the proposition that the Hindus lacked a sense of history is misleading in the extreme and should be abandoned. Convincingly argued, eminently readable, and bearing Sharma's signature style, this compact study will attract scholars and students of Indian religions, compa rative religion, Indian history, and Indic civilization, as well as general readers interested in Hinduism. Advaita Vedanta: An Introduction
Motilal Banarsidass Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2007; 8120820274; Second Reprint; Hardcover; New; New;
The novelty of this book consists of the fact that it introduces the reader to the basic tenets of Advaita Vedanta in three independent but complementary ways: scripturally, rationally and experientially. All the three elements are usually found intertwined in accounts of Advaita Vedanta. They are presented distinctly here in the hope that each perspective will enrich one`s understanding of Advaita Vedanta as a whole and also allow the reader to form his or her own opinion about the relative merits of each approach.Printed Pages: 125. 102126

Decolonizing Indian Studies
D.K. Printworld (P) Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2015; 8124608326; Hardcover; New; New; 15 x 23 Cm
The present Indian academic self-understanding of its history and culture is largely Western in origin. This Western intellectual enterprise, however, went hand in hand with a Western political enterprise, i.e. the colonization of India. This raises the question: To what extent, if any, did the two developments influence each other? It also raises another question: To what extent did West’s cultural presuppositions influence its understanding of Indian civilization?The central epistemological issue which these questions raise is the following: What significance does the fact that the self-understanding of a culture is mediated by that of another culture, over which it was culturally and politically dominant, possess for the votaries of the culture whose self-understanding has thus been mediated in this fashion?This question is not merely of historical but also of contemporary interest, for in an increasingly globalizing world, in which power is unevenly distributed at various levels, the self-understanding of all cultures is likely to be influenced by how they are being presented by other cultures. Furthermore, in such a world, shifting political alliances may generate new intellectual configurations, whose legitimacy may require constant examination. The essays in this book address these and similar issues. Printed Pages: 306. 107443

Hinduism on its Own Terms
D.K. Printworld (P) Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2016; 8124608393; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New; 15 x 23 Cm
Hinduism, due to its proteanness, is more a way of life rather than a creed. The Hindu tradition recognizes the Vedas as its foundational scripture, Hinduism itself being indigenously known as Vaidika Dharma. Shruti and Smriti are the primary sources of Hinduism, where the former connotes the Vedas that stand for the revealed wisdom and the latter stands for tradition. Smriti texts include law books like the Manusmriti, epics (Itihasa) like the Ramayana and Mahabharata, Puranas, Agamas, Darshana literature (philosophical systems), sometimes Buddhist and Jaina works, other than the numerous religious works in regional languages.Hinduism was challenged by the rise of heterodox movements in the sixth century bce, especially Jainism and Buddhism. Their prolonged encounter and interaction led to the development of the philosophical schools of Hinduism. The advent of Islam and Christianity, and the origin of Sikhism, led to further developments in the Hindu thought system. This book defines and surveys Hinduism, and elaborates its keywords. It consists of two parts. The first part is a general survey of Hinduism. It describes its primary sources of information and the historical trends within its study; the Great Tradition with its basic teaching and practices; the Little Tradition; and modern developments. Many terms which appear in the first part are elaborated in the second part, along with some additional terms.This volume enables readers to grasp the fundamentals of Hinduism. Goddesses and Women in the Indic Religious Tradition
Brill; Leiden, The Netherlands; 2004; 9004124667; First Edition; Hard Cover; Brand New; 16.5 x 25 Cm
Goddesses and Women in the Indic Religious Tradition goes beyond the traditional sources that lie at the basis for determining the position of goddesses and women in India. Following the lead of a “hermeneutics of surprise” the book identifies, indeed, surprising new material – and conclusions; for example the analysis of Vedic Srauta ritual. Or by offering surprising conclusions, when the location is obviously one involving women and goddesses, or anthropology discovers that the worship of the Great Goddess temporarily elevates the position of women. Other examples of the effectivity of the “hermeneutics of surprise” are seen when applied to the role of ?akinis, Sakti worship, the Marathi Sant tradition,and to Sa?kara’s commentaries. Public-Interest Journalism: A Guide for Students
Orient BlackSwan; New Delhi, India; 2014; 8125056726; Hardcover; New; New;
In the context of increasing corporatisation of the media, this volume shows why public-interest journalism is crucial to a healthy democracy. It also introduces aspiring journalists to the main methods of the craft. Those methods are sorely needed in the contemporary news media, and will be be a considerable an asset for those interested in public-interest writing or broadcasting. The author begins by setting the context in the English-speaking countries. Pressures on the media to reduce public-interest work stem from governments, from the increasingly corporatised and cartelised news media, and from journalists’ own professional techniques. Furthermore, media organisations in the public and the private sector often cut staff to save money or increase profits, but that makes the news media progressively more dependent on official and corporate sources and press releases. One consequence is that the news media severely reduce their coverage of significant public issues, such as global warming, mass poverty, policy failures, corporate illegalities and corruption. The second chapter focuses on the Indian news media, and includes selected examples from other South Asian countries. It also addresses some of the questions raised by proposed broadcasting regulations in India. The analysis moves on to journalists’ professional self-conceptions, with examples showing among other things that the process whereby issues are selected for coverage goes largely unexamined within the media.Printed Pages: 232. 101855

India's Turn: Understanding the Economic Transformation
Oxford University Press; New Delhi, India; 2008; 019569354X; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New; 15 x 23 Cm
India’s economic turnaround is now well known. However many questions still remain. When did the economy start turning around and why? What is so special about India’s pattern of economic development and what are the consequences? Are India’s public institutions deteriorating or improving? What is India’s economic future? These essays, both analytical and prescriptive, offer fresh and unconventional answers to questions relating to the turning point of India’s economy, its pattern of economic development, the status of its public institutions, and its economic future. Two broad themes underlie the volume. The first cluster relating to India’s current and future growth analyses the Indian experience in the last three decades. The second dealing with the integration of India into the world economy describes the global trading context and the opportunities and constraints that India faced, and how quickly these change. 028513

2791 Arya Asanga (Author) & Artemus B. Engle (Tr.)
The Bodhisattva Path to Unsurpassed Enlightenment: A Complete Translation of the Bodhisattvabhumi
Snow Lion/TBI; New Delhi, India; 2016; 1559394293; Hardcover; New; New;
Arya Asanga’s Bodhisattvabhumi, or The Stage of a Bodhisattva, is the Mahayana tradition’s most comprehensive manual on the practice and training of bodhisattvas—by the author’s own account, a compilation of the full range of instructions contained in the entire collection of Mahayana sutras. A classic work of the Yogacara school, it has been cherished in Tibet by all the historical Buddhist lineages as a primary source of instruction on bodhisattva ethics, vows, and practices, as well as for its summary of the ultimate goal of the bodhisattva path—supreme enlightenment.Despite the text’s seminal importance in the Tibetan traditions, it has remained unavailable in English except in fragments. Engle’s translation, made from the Sanskrit original with reference to the Tibetan translation and commentaries, will enable English readers to understand more fully and clearly what it means to be a bodhisattva and practitioner of the Mahayana tradition. 2792 Arya Maitreya; Translated By Rosemarie Fuchs
Buddha Nature: The Mahayana Uttaratantra Shastra with Commentary
Snow Lion Publications; Boston, USA; 1559391286; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New; 16 Cms x 24 Cms
All sentient beings without exception have buddha nature?the inherent purity and perfection of the mind, untouched by changing mental states. Thus there is neither any reason for conceit in deeming oneself better than others nor any reason for self-contempt, thinking of oneself as inferior and unable to reach enlightenment. This seeing is obscured by veils which are removable and do not touch the inherent purity and perfection of the nature of the mind as such. The Mahayana Uttaratantra Shastra, one of the Five Treatises said to have been dictated to Asanga by the Bodhisattva Maitreya, presents the Buddha's definitive teachings on how we should understand this ground of enlightenment and clarifies the nature and qualities of buddhahood. Jamgön Kongtrül Lodro Thaye (1813?1899), the profoundly learned and realized master who compiled what are known as the "Five Great Treasures," wrote the outstanding commentary to the Mahayana Uttaratantra Shastra translated here. Called The Unassailable Lion's Roar, it presents Maitreya's text as a background for the Mahamudra teachings in a way that is especially clear and easy to understand. Khenpo Tsultrim Gyamtso Rinpoche provided the annotations and the explanations on which the present translation is based. A renowned scholar and highly accomplished yogi, he is a living example of the ongoing tradition of oral transmission. He first visited the West in 1977 at the request of H.H. the Sixteenth Karmapa. Rosemarie Fuchs has been a student of Khen Rinpoche since 1978, and this translation was done upon his advice. Printed Pages: 416. 037313

2793 Aryaman Dalmia
Graham Buffett and Me
Times Group Books; New Delhi, India; 2011; 9789380942254; First Edition; Softcover; New;
This book outlines with real-world examples the basic tenets of investing, as enunciated by Benjamin Graham, the father of scientific investing. It further analyses how his master student Warren Buffett has navigated through the complexities of the investment world by following a few simple but extremely effective guidelines and become one of the three richest men in the world. It demonstrates how detailed analysis, independent thinking, and discipline can reap rewards and how one should control emotions and ignore market sentiment. It deals with examples from the Indian markets and goes through case studies of extraordinarily successful investors like Ashish Dhawan, founder of Chrys Capital; Madhav Dhar, former head of Emerging Markets at Morgan Stanley; Chaitanya Dalmia, whose own in-house performance beats that of most investment funds; and Sanjay Bakshi, who teaches value investing and runs an India-specific hedge fund. These examples demonstrate how the investors have followed Graham's and Buffett's approaches and made extraordinary profits from rational thought in a seemingly irrational world.Printed Pages: 126. 104666
