Inhabiting the Other: Essays on Literature and Exile
Aryan Books International; New Delhi, India; 2001; 8173052050; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New; 15 x 22 Cm
Literary Inspiration that drew impetus from a state of exile and suffering has engaged the attention of scholars in view of its overwhelming occurence in contemporary literature. Texts built around the sign of displacement have allowed readings at multiple levels of space and time leading to shifts in trends in hermeneutics. The editor's goal in this volume is to give a critical overview of certain common denominators present in texts of a similar persuasion, functioning within identical parameters, albeit at different junctures of history. Physical exile and isolation led, in many instances, to a blossoming of the creative faculties which sought to ease the numbering feeling of an inner exile. The present collection of essays, representing texts from different countries of Asia, Africa, Europe and the Americas, institute a discussion on certain issues that plagued the minds of some of the greatest writers of the world. New Life
Roli Books; New Delhi, India; 2005; 8186939210; First Edition; Hard Cover; New; New; 8.5 x 5.5 Inches
New Life is a tale of love, of a girl growing up to be a woman in Calcutta, and of her spiritual awakening across continents. It can be read as a story of complex human relationships, evocatively interspersed with metaphorical descriptions of landscapes. A passage in the novel aptly describes the author’s intention behind her writing: ‘She wrote from, not about. She attempted to create a space, a vast space where many things could dwell at the same time, and where each thing could become more than itself.’ This is not another Indian English novel written for export; a native sensibility works in English to rediscover our own ways of understanding the world. New Life is not just a tale, it is a poem. —U.R. Ananthamurthy The past comes through in New Life as so many melodic lines converging and then separating in strange yet vaguely familiar ways. These lines, I am afraid, will haunt you, because just when you will begin to think nostalgia is getting you, you will recognise in some surprise that it is not a lost world that Sharmistha Mohanty is invoking but a living world that survives in fragments, tentatively yet confidently, all around us. It is a world that has lost none of its vitality for being half-forgotten or cornered. The search is not for a lost history but for a self within which fragments of past selves will find a place. —Ashis Nandy Printed Pages: 296 illustrations. 013003

Reduplication: Doubling in Morphology
Cambridge University Press; Cambridge, UK; 2005; 0521806496; First Edition; Hard Cover; New; New; 228 x 152 Mm
This groundbreaking new study takes a novel approach to reduplication, a phenomenon whereby languages use repetition to create new words. Sharon Inkelas and Cheryl Zoll argue that the driving force in reduplication is identity at the morphosyntactic, not the phonological level, and present a new model of reduplication - Morphological Doubling Theory - that derives the full range of reduplication patterns. This approach shifts the focus away from the relatively small number of cases of phonological overapplication and underapplication, which have played a major role in earlier studies, to the larger class of cases where base and reduplicant diverge phonologically. The authors conclude by arguing for a theoretical shift in phonology, which entails more attention to word structure. As well as presenting the authors’ pioneering work, this book also provides a much-needed overview of reduplication, the study of which has become one of the most contentious in modern phonological theory. • Provides the broadest empirical coverage to date of reduplicative phenomena • Integrates phonology and morphology (previously morphology was largely ignored) • Provides a much-needed critique of current theories of reduplication Contents 1. Introduction; 2. Evidence for morphological doubling; 3. Morphologically conditioned phonology in reduplication: the daughters; 4. Morphologically conditioned phonology in reduplication: the mother node; 5. Morphologically-driven opacity in reduplication; 6. Case-studies; 7. Final issues. Printed Pages: 280. 012775

Lovingkindness: The Revolutionary Art of Happiness (Shambhala Classics)
Shambhala Publication/TBI; New Delhi, India; 2016; 1569570477; Softcover; New;
Throughout our lives we long to love ourselves more deeply and find a greater sense of connection with others. Our fear of intimacy-both with others and with ourselves-creates feelings of pain and longing. But these feelings can also awaken in us the desire for freedom and the willingness to take up the spiritual path. In this inspiring book, Sharon Salzberg, one of America's leading spiritual teachers, shows us how the Buddhist path of lovingkindness can help us discover the radiant, joyful heart within each of us. This practice of lovingkindness is revolutionary because it has the power to radically change our lives, helping us cultivate true happiness in ourselves and genuine compassion for others. The Buddha described the nature of such a spiritual path as "the liberation of the heart, which is love." The author draws on simple Buddhist teachings, wisdom stories from various traditions, guided meditation practices, and her own experience from twenty-five years of practice and teaching to illustrate how each one of us can cultivate love, compassion, joy, and equanimity-the four "heavenly abodes" of traditional Buddhism. South Asia: From Freedom to Terrorism
Gyan Books Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 1998; 8121205808; Hardcover; New; New;
At the Beginning of the momentous 20th century," says the author, "the Indian sub-continent was the coveted paradise of the world's imperial regime. In a relatively short time span of about 50 years since the Empire folded up, it has turned into a land of unceasing turbulence, Terror and blood-spilling." How came what was once the 'Jewel in the crown' of Britain, the most peaceful Colonial territory in the World has turned into the sub-continent of violence, blood and tears par excellence? The book tells the tale of this sordid Transformation of South Asia steadily, inexorably, bit by bit, with gripping accounts of Events and happenings in course of the last half century. It also seeks to explore the reasons.Touching briefly upon the true story of the 'Quit India' Movement of August 1942, in which the author himself was a Young participant, the book goes on to narrate in a capsule the marathon negotiations among the Congress, Muslim League and the British, with illuminating characterization of the Principal dramatis personae, which brought about the independence of India and Pakistan on 15th August, 1947. In the process, it vividly captures the varying moods, aspirations, Dreams and nightmares of the people of the sub-continent during those tempestuous years in the run up to independence and immediately after its attainment. As such it becomes a compulsory reading for the post-independence generations of readers who were not around in those stirring times.The book ends with a new Vision and a stirring call to the people of South Asia. Says the author: "India, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka are Natural allies. They cannot wish away Geography even if they wanted to. They have already wasted 50 precious years beating about the bush, seeing Enemies in friends, fighting phantoms and ghosts... the incoming century beckons them to make a new start, to embark on a new course based on Peace not conflict, Dialogue not confrontation, and whole-hearted economic cooperation to bring up their people in the modern age.Printed Pages: 308. 105880

Collected Stories, Volume I
Penguin; New Delhi, India; 2004; 0143029525; First Edition; Paperback; New; New; 13 Cms x 20 Cms
Not many readers of Shashi Deshpande may be aware that her first experiments in writing fiction started with the short story. Over the years, she has published about a hundred stories in literary journals, magazines and newspapers, in between writing her immensely popular novels which are now read all over the world, and taught in universities wherever Indian writing has an audience. In this collection we find Shashi Deshpande at her best, writing with subtlety and a rare sensitivity about men and women trapped in relationships and situations often not of their making. The wife of a successful politician who must look to a long-lost past in order to keep up the pretence of contentment; a little girl who cannot comprehend why the very fact of her being born is a curse; a young man whose fantasy of love drives him to murder; a newly-wed couple with dramatically differing views on what it means to get to know each other every one of the characters here is delineated with lucidity and compassion. Written over the past three decades, the stories in this volume provide an insight into often forgotten aspects of human feelings and relationships, weaving a magical web of emotions that is testimony to the unusual depth and range of Shashi Deshpande’s writing. ‘Shashi Deshpande takes us into realms of the female psyche which no writer of the previous generation had dared put into words as candidly’ Dieter Riemenschneider in The Story Must Be Told ‘Deshpande’s finely honed sensibility infuses the delicate interplay of human relationships with a realistic ambience which serves to crystallize our thoughts, and all at once we see in her a natural extension of our own cognitive parameters’ The Times of India Printed Pages: 240. 026505

In the Country of Deceit
Penguin/Viking; New Delhi, India; 2008; 0670081981; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New; 15 x 23 Cm
Devayani chooses to live alone in the small town of Rajnur after her parents’ death, ignoring the gently voiced disapproval of her family and friends. Teaching English, creating a garden and making friends with Rani, a former actress who settles in the town with her husband and three children, Devayani’s life is tranquil, imbued with a hardwon independence. Then she meets Ashok Chinappa, Rajnur’s new District Superintendent of Police, and they fall in love despite the fact that Ashok is much older, married, and—as both painfully acknowledge from the very beginning—it is a relationship without a future. Deshpande’s unflinching gaze tracks the suffering, evasions and lies that overtake those caught in the web of subterfuge. There are no hostages taken in the country of deceit; no victors; only scarred lives. This understated yet compassionate examination of the nature of love, loyalty and deception establishes yet again Deshpande’s position as one of India’s most formidable writers of fiction. The Last Durbar
Lotus/Roli Books; New Delhi, India; 8174365834; Softcover; New;
The existing histories of the Partition of British India have very little chance of capturing the moods and mindsets, the helplessness and the frustration of those who steered the course. The histories written thus far have either focused on political narratives or on the ideological analysis. More recently, the spotlight has turned towards the madness and pathology of hatred and mass murders. The Last Durbar tells it as it was - without the epic quality of conventional writing filled with the rhetoric of freedom and greatness, and without the legalese and constitution-making vocabulary of the Transfer of Power. The personal and political meet and separate at the last durbar, with Louis Mountbatten on the throne, and the modern, constitutional 'durbars'hail the advent of freedom and bid farewell to each other. The play is based on private papers of Mountbatten, including verbatim records, testimonies, and discussions of the leading political figures. It is a nuanced and multi-layered account of the months and days that eventually led to the independent nations of India and Pakistan. Drama is the only genre of written history that allows us to fully portray the complexity of such a process and frame the atmosphere to the concentrated moment. The history of Partition has never before been told in this way. Printed Pages: 194. 108571

Women in Agriculture: A Socio-Economic Analysis
Concept Publishing Company Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 1992; 8170223636; Hardcover; New; New;
There is hardly any activity in agricultural production except ploughing in which women are not actively involved. The crucial role of women in agriculture, allied occupations and household activities have, however, been underestimated and valued. There is hardly any appreciation and recognition of their extensive contribution. By and large, they have remained as "invisible workers". This study investigates the nature and extent of involvement of rural women and men in agriculture and home activities as well as the extent of exposure of modern crop technology to farm women. It prepares a comparative drudgery index for agriculture operations and examines the impact of employment, displacement, work load and income. The author has also studied the income. The author has also studied the extent of contribution of women in cultivation of major crops, role of women in decision-making in farming and the utilization pattern of savings in the family. Providing an insight into a typical agrarian profile of farm women, the study suggests several far-reaching implications to the planners, policy makers, administrators, scientists and change agents for transforming an agricultural based rural society. The Prithviwallahs
Roli Books; New Delhi, India; 2004; 8174363483; First Edition; Hard Cover; New; New; 10 x 10 Inches
On 15 January 1944, Prithviraj Kapoor, already a film star, realized a long-cherished dream, and Prithvi Theatres was born. Over the next 16 years, Prithviraj Kapoor’s repertory toured the country, giving one remarkable performance after another: Shakuntala (1944), Pathan (1947) and Paisa (1953) among them—a total of 2662 performances over 5982 days in 112 places! This was theatre history in the making, as stars were born and legends created. Uzra Mumtaz, her sister, Zohra Segal, Prithviraj’s cousins, Premnath, Rajindernath, Sajjan and Mohan Saigal, L.V. Prasad, and the young Kapoors—Raj, Shammi and Shashi, made sterling appearances on the Prithvi stage. It remained for Shashi, his wife Jennifer and their children, Kunal and Sanjna, to fulfil Prithviraj’s last dream and give Prithvi Theatres a home of its own. On 5 November 1978, the curtain rose on G.P. Deshpande’s Uddhwasta Dharmashala, directed by Om Puri, and Prithvi Theatres, the travelling theatre company, was reborn as Prithvi Theatre, the building that has become a landmark in Mumbai. The passion that drove Prithviraj continues to inspire one hallmark performance after another from actors and directors like Naseeruddin Shah, Nadira Zaheer Babbar, Feroz Khan, Dinesh Thakur, Makarand Deshpande and a host of others who form the galaxy of stars in the world of theatre. This book is the story of a theatre that has become a living legend, and the men and women who made it happen. Printed Pages: 153. 007305

Riot: A Novel
Penguin; New Delhi, India; 2001; 0143030906; First Edition; Paperback; New; New; 14 Cms x 21 Cms
Who killed twenty-four year old Priscilla Hart? And why would anyone want to murder this idealistic American student who had come to India to volunteer in a women’s health programme? In this novel, the author experiments brilliantly with narrative form, chronicling the mystery of Priscilla’s death through the often contradictory accounts of a dozen or more characters. Intellectually provocative and emotionally charged, Riot is a novel about the ownership of history, about love, hate, cultural collision, religious fanaticism, and the impossibility of knowing the truth. India: From Midnight to the Millennium and Beyond
Penguin; New Delhi, India; 2007; 0143103245; Revised Edition; Paperback; New; 14 Cms x 21 Cms
India: From Midnight to the Millennium and Beyond is an eloquent argument for the importance of India to the future of the industrialized world. Shashi Tharoor shows compellingly that India stands at the intersection of the most significant questions facing the world today. If democracy leads to inefficient political infighting, should it be sacrificed in the interest of economic well-being? Does religious fundamentalism provide a way for countries in the developing world to assert their identity in the face of Western hegemony, or is there a case for pluralism and diversity amid cultural and religious traditions? Does the entry of Western consumer goods threaten a country’s economic self-sufficiency, and is protectionism the only guarantee of independence? The answers to such questions will determine what the nature of our world is in the twenty-first century. And since Indians account for almost one-sixth of the world’s population today, their choices will resonate throughout the globe. Shashi Tharoor deals with this vast theme in a work of remarkable depth and startling originality, combining elements of political scholarship, personal reflection, memoir, fiction, and polemic, all illuminated in vivid and compelling prose. Bookless in Baghdad: And Other Writings About Reading
Viking; New Delhi, India; 2005; 0670058203; First Edition; Hard Cover; New; New;
Shashi Tharoor began reading books—Enid Blyton’s Noddy series—when he was three. By the time he was ten, he had published his first work of fiction, Operation Bellows, a credulity-stretching saga of an Anglo-Indian fighter pilot. In between were years when he read a book a day. And in the years since, he has published eight books and written for many Indian and foreign publications. Bookless in Baghdad brings together pieces written over the past decade by this compulsive reader and prolific writer on the subject closest to his heart: reading. In these essays on books, authors, reviews, critics, literary festivals, literary aspirants, Empire, and India, Tharoor takes us on a delightful journey of discovery. He wanders the ‘book souk’ in a Baghdad under sanctions where the middle-class are selling their volumes so that they can afford to live; analyses the Indianness of Salman Rushdie; discusses P.G. Wodehouse’s enduring popularity in India; and drives around Huesca looking to pay an idiosyncratic tribute to George Orwell. There are excursions into the pitfalls of reviewing, explorations of the ‘anxiety of audience’ of Indian English writers, and a wicked account of how Norman Mailer dealt with a negative review. Nehru: The Invention of India
Penguin; New Delhi, India; 2007; 0143104047; First Edition; Paperback; New; New;
This short biography examines a great figure of twentieth-century nationalism from the vantage point of the beginning of the twenty-first. Deftly weaving personal facets with historical happenings, it tells the fascinating story of Jawaharlal Nehru's life. Finely portrayed is the unremarkable youth who found his calling in politics and followed Gandhi into British jails; the aristocrat born to privilege who was moved by the plight of peasants because of his socialist convictions; the cosmopolitan who became the hero of the nationalist youth; the die-hard secularist who confronted Hindu mobs, trying to stop the Partition violence; and the Prime Minister who desired to educate the poor, illiterate and idolizing Indian masses in democracy by his own personal example. The book also analyses the principal pillars of Nehru's legacy to India: democratic institution building, staunch pan-Indian secularism, socialist economics at home and a foreign policy of non-alignment. Tharoor sees the first two as having been indispensable to the survival of our pluralism, and non-alignment to preserving our self-respect, though socialist economics, he believes, was disastrous—boosting poverty, stagnation and widespread corruption. All of these, however, were integral to a vision of Indianness that is fundamentally contested today. Beautifully written and sparkling with fresh insights, full of anecdotes retold with a novelist's pen, this book offers us a reinterpretation of an extraordinary man and his times. The Homecoming
Penguin; New Delhi, India; 2008; 0143065017; First Edition; Paperback; New; 13 x 20 Cm
Javed Sharif returns home to Srinagar for his father’s eighty-fourth birthday. He returns with a sense of well-being, despite troubles, the violence and the bitterly cold weather. Unexpectedly, his dreams of retiring and settling in Kashmir again are shattered by a knock on the door on the day of the birthday party and, as he watches his life unravel, his world will never be the same again. The Homecoming is the story of one family, but also of the many families in Kashmir whose lives have been destroyed by decades of violence and uncertainty. Deeply moving and disturbingly honest, this is a haunting tale that is political yet profoundly personal, and tells of the pain and suffering that is a result of the cruelty—and ultimately the indifference—of the state. Kumarajiva: Philosopher and Seer
Indira Gandhi National Centre for the Arts/D.K. Printworld (P) Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2015; 9789380935614; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New; 23 x 29 Cm
Kumarajiva, (Jiumóluóshi in Chinese), a philosopher and seer, had a long cherished mission: propagation of the true spirit of Buddhism. He broke political, geographical, cultural and linguistic barriers; travelled through barren lands and rivers, mountains and forbidding terrains to bequeath to us a casket of sacred sutras as the most authoritative presentations by translating them from Sanskrit into Chinese. He created pure, boundless and unthinkable versions of the sutras as an obeisance to the sacred voice so that one could bathe in the pure pond of the Dharma. “Kumarajiva: Philosopher and Seer” is a compendium of recent researches on the brilliance that ushers through his legacy, enshrined in thousands of monasteries in China, Korea and Japan, preserving the heritage - his translations of the sacred Sanskrit texts copied over the last sixteen centuries. The life of Kumarajiva was unique in every aspect. His works inspired members of Imperial houses, Emperors, writers and artists, pilgrims and philosophers. His angelic presence can still be felt in the monastic establishments, in the sound of recitation of sutras and in the lives of the people that have been inspired over the centuries by his translations. The researches done by scholars from world academia are included in the present volume on his date of birth, the towns and villages where he spent his life from childhood to nirvana, historically important events of his life, his contemporaries, his contribution to the cultural sphere of East Asia especially defining a new road for Mahayana Buddhism, philosophical theories and vision, comparative studies of his translations and echoes of his translations in Chinese literature.Printed Pages: 361. 100548

Insurgent Sepoys: Europe views the Revolt of 1857
Routledge; London, UK; 2011; 0415597994; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New; 15 x 23 Cm
The Revolt of 1857 in India has been seen primarily as an event that had repercussions in Britain and the Indian subcontinent. Little attention has been paid to its impact in other parts of the world. This path-breaking volume offers an insight into how the Revolt was viewed in non-English speaking Europe, where it was followed with keen interest. While liberals and conservatives defended or criticised British policies, emerging nationalist movements felt compelled to position themselves vis-ť-vis this tumultuous event in distant Asia. Arguing about whether it was a mere 'mutiny' or a nationalist 'revolt', whether it was justified or an execrable outburst of a barbaric people, they all saw the Revolt as a threat to Britain's future and dominance not only in India but also in Europe. The Revolt continued to engage the interest of European readers long after its suppression, appearing in various kinds of writings. This volume introduces this significant and till now neglected strand of Europe's encounter with India, including the extensive coverage of the Revolt in newspapers and journals in several European languages (French, German, Italian, Spanish, Portuguese, Hungarian, Czech and Bulgarian), as well as its numerous fictional representations. About the Author Shaswati Mazumdar is Professor of German Studies at the Department of Germanic and Romance Studies, University of Delhi. Table of Contents 1. Introduction Part I: News and Views 2. Chandigarh Revealed: Le Corbusier's City Today
Mapin Publishing; New Delhi, India; 9789385360138; Hardcover; New; New;
The unlikely story of Le Corbusier and Chandigarh has proven itself to be one of modernism’s boldest experiments. Born of a vision of a modern India, Chandigarh—designed by Le Corbusier—was created as a statement for an emerging modern nation–state. Its Capitol Complex, considered by many as Le Corbusier’s masterpiece, was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2016.Like all visionaries, Le Corbusier was adept at taking the iconic and symbolic and using them to fashion his own unique vocabulary. This volume explores the way in which his ideas created fertile grounds for architecture and urban planning.in Chandigarh, and in India, that encapsulated the visions of the post-war and post-colonial era.With insightful analyses of buildings across Chandigarh, the author illuminates the compositional poetry evident in Le Corbusier’s structures and the ways in which the patina of time has changed the city. A visceral journey through a remarkable modernist landscape using the photographic medium, Chandigarh Revealed pays homage to the works of a master with reflective observations of a living city. "Whenever illness is associated with loss of soul," writes Shaun McNiff, "the arts emerge spontaneously as remedies, soul medicine." The medicine of the artist, like that of the shaman, arises from his or her relationship to "familiars"—the themes, methods, and materials that interact with the artist through the creative process. Art as Medicine demonstrates how the imagination heals and renews itself through this natural process. The author describes his pioneering methods of art therapy—including interpretation through performance and storytelling, creative collaboration, and dialoguing with images—and the ways in which they can revitalize both psychotherapy and art itself. The Tiger Claw: A Novel
Penguin; New Delhi, India; 2005; 0143032895; First Edition; Paperback; New; 14 x 22 Cm
When her father, the Sufi mystic and musician Hazrat Inayat Khan, dies, Noor is forced to bow to her uncle’s religious literalism and ideas of feminine propriety. Yet, while at the Sorbonne, she falls in love with Armand, a Jewish pianist and composer, and when her uncle forbids her to see him, continues their relationship in secret. As the Germans invade France in 1940, Armand persuades Noor to leave him for her own safety. Noor flees with her family to England, but volunteers to serve in a special intelligence agency. Trained as a radio operator for a group that, in Churchill’s words, will “set Europe ablaze” with acts of sabotage, she is sent back to Occupied France. Unwavering courage is what Noor requires for her assignment, and for her deeply personal mission—to unite with her beloved again. As her talisman, she carries her grandmother’s gift, an heirloom tiger claw encased in gold… In its portrayal of intolerance, The Tiger Claw eerily mirrors our own times, and progresses with moments of great beauty and tension towards a moving and unforgettable denouement. Print and Power: Confucianism, Communism, and Buddhism in the Making of Modern Vietnam
Munshiram Manoharlal Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2010; 8121512166; First Indian Edition; Hardcover; New; New; 16 x 24 Cm
In this ambitious and path-breaking book, Shawn McHale challenges long held views that define modern Vietnamese history in terms of anticolonial nationalism and revolution. McHale argues instead for a historiography that does not overstress either the role of politics in general or Communism in particular. Using a wide range of sources from Vietnam, France, and the United States, many of them previously unexploited, he shows how the use of printed matter soared between 1920 and 1945 and in the process transformed Vietnamese public life and shaped the modern Vietnamese consciousness. Print and Power begins with an overview of Vietnam's lively public spheres, bringing debates from Europe and the rest of Asia to Vietnamese studies with nuance and sophistication. It examines the impact of the French colonial state on Vietnamese society as well as Vietnamese and East Asian understandings of public discourse and public space. Popular taste, rather than revolutionary or national ideology, determined to a large extent what was published, with limited intervention by the French authorities. A vibrant but hierarchical public realm of debate existed in Vietnam under authoritarian colonial rule. The work goes on to contest the impact of Confucianism on premodern and modern Vietnam and, based on materials never before used, provides a radically new perspective on the rise of Vietnamese communism from 1929 to 1945. Novel interpretations of the Nghe Tinh soviets (1930-1931), the first major communist uprising in Vietnam, and Vietnamese communist successes in World War II built an audience for their views and made an extremely alien ideology comprehensible to growing numbers of Vietnamese. In what is by far the most thorough examination in English of modern Vietnamese Buddhism and its transformations, McHale argues that, contrary to received wisdom, Buddhism was not in decline during the 1920-1945 period; in fact, more Buddhist texts were produced in Vietnam at that time than at any other in its history. This finding suggests that the heritage of the Vietnamese past played a crucial role in the late colonial period. Print and Power makes a significant contribution to Vietnamese and Asian studies and will be of compelling interest to those in the fields of comparative religion and European colonialism. Vajra Wisdom : Deity Practice in Tibetan Buddhism
Snow Lion Publications; Ithaca, New York, USA; 2013; 1559393971; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New; 16 x 24 Cm
Vajra Wisdom presents the commentaries of two great nineteenth-century Nyingma masters that guide practitioners engaged in development stage practice through a series of straightforward instructions. The rarity of this kind of material in English makes it indispensable for practitioners and scholars alike. The goal of development stage meditation in the Tibetan Buddhist tradition is to directly realize the inseparability of phenomena and emptiness. Preceded by initiation and oral instructions, the practitioner arrives at this view through the profound methods of deity visualization, mantra recitation, and meditative absorption. Feminist Thought. Androcentrism, Communication and Objectivity
Munshiram Manoharlal Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2002; 8121510546; First Edition; Hardbound; New; New; 14 Cms x 22 Cms
Feminist Thought situates the gender debate inside philosophy. The perceived gender neutrality of philosophy has been critiqued. Consequently the implications of radicalizing philosophy from a gender perspective are assessed. This book introduces the notion of gender and its relation to androcentrism or male-centred virtues. An exposition of the various ways in which gender may enter conceptual schemes, logic and objectivity is given. In the course of providing an overview of contemporary debates the author has made seminal contributions. Her imaginative account of an alternative mode of communication deserves serious attention. This book will be indispensable to students and teachers who are eager to know the locations of gender in philosophy and also for those who want to ponder upon possible ways of eradicating gender bias from theory.
