The Sansis of Punjab: A Gypsy and Denotified Tribe of Rajput Origin
Munshiram Manoharlal Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 1965; 8121504198; First Edition; Hardcover; New; 15 x 23 Cm
The Sansis of Punjab-whose gift the famous Ranjit Singh was to Indian History-are one of the most important tribes of North India, mistakenly branded as 'aborigines' by ill-informed anthropologists in the past and classed under "Criminal Tribes" by the British administrators during their regime. A proper anthropological study of their life was till now a desideratum. For the first time now, this book which is the result of deep concern and painstaking research of its author, gives an authentic and exhaustive account of this sadly neglected ethnic group. The Sansis being one of the Indo-Aryan people who settled in Punjab, this book describes as a whole, the social customs, manners, beliefs and practices of the peoples of the land of the five rivers. The author proves in it that the Sansis are no aborigines but of Rajput origin, dispossessed of their homeland by Muslim invasion in the 13th century and scattered over in the Punjab. It contains original chapters on their dialect, demography, their relations with the gypsies, found outside India and other Indo-Aryans peoples, and their socio-economic and cultural life including the present and future of their socio-economic and political life. High Religion: A Cultural and Political History of Sherpa Buddhism
Motilal Banarsidass Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2012; 8120809491; Second Reprint; Hardcover; New; New;
An eminent anthropologist examines the foundings of the first celibate Buddhist monasteries among the Sherpas of Nepal in the early twentieth century--a religious development that was a major departure from "folk" or "popular" Buddhism. Sherry Ortner is the first to integrate social scientific and historical modes of analysis in a study of the Sherpa monasteries and one of the very few to attempt such an account for Buddhist monasteries anywhere. Combining ethnographic and oral historical methods, she scrutinizes the interplay of political and cultural factors in the events culminating in the foundings. Her work constitutes a major advance both in our knowledge of Sherpa Buddhism and in the integration of anthropological and historical modes of analysis. At the theoretical level, the book contributes to an emerging theory of "practice", an explanation of the relationship between human intentions and actions on the one hand, and the structures of society and culture that emerge from and feed back upon those intentions and actions on the other. It will appeal not only to the increasing number of anthropologists working on similar problems but also to historians anxious to discover what anthropology has to offer to historical analysis. In addition, it will be essential reading for those interested in Nepal, Tibet, the Sherpa, or Buddhism in general.Printed Pages: 259. 102367

Human Reason and Its Enemies: A Rigorous Critique of Postmodernism
Promilla & Co., Publishers; New Delhi, India; 2009; 8185002940; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New; 15 x 23 Cm
This book is the result of a two-year research project under a National Fellowship of the Indian Council of Philosophical Research. It is an uncompromising expose of postmodernism-a philosophy which seeks to destroy philosophy; challenges and objectivity, universality and impartiality of reason; and which swears by 'situated' knowledge. The views of many postmoderns, particularly those of Cohen, Foucault, Lyotard, MacIntyre and Taylor, are shown to be superficial, sophisticated, confused, fallacious and even ridiculous. Postmodernism believes truth to be culture-relative and therefore believes that intercultural comparison and critical appraisal must require an 'Archimedean point' to make this possible. Since, they say there is no such point, cultures are incommensurable. This argument as well as the incommensurability thesis are shown to be based on messy thinking and prejudice. The postmodern reliance on the concept of 'language games' and its love hate relationship to Western science, are examined in depth. The pronouncements of thinkers like Feyerabend and Kuhn are thoroughly exposed as mistaken and even laughable. An attempt is made to disclose the true nature and salient features of human reason and thinking. A full chapter is devoted to the arch-postmodernist Richard Rorty, and another to feminist writers like Fox Keller, Harding, Irigary and Tiles, who are powerfully drawn to postmodern ideas. 28435 Shevantibai Nikambe, Edited By Chandani Lokuge
Ratanbai: A High-Caste Child-Wife
Oxford University Press; New Delhi, India; 2004; 019566311X; First Edition; Hard Cover; New; New; 14 Cms x 22 Cms
Ratanbai traces the poignant life story of a Marathi Brahmin girl from early childhood, through to child-marriage and into maturity. As the daughter of a westernized lawyer father and a deeply traditional mother, young Ratanbai is caught in the grips of the East-West encounter within the precincts of her own home. The novel serves as a socio-historic document offering insights into the domestic routine and distinctive familial and religious customs of Marathi Brahmin women in late nineteenth-century Bombay, as well as a feminist text about the intellectual and emotional awakening of its female protagonist. Intimate and moving, Ratanbai includes eloquent photographs of child-wives which tell a narrative of their own. Very little is known about the author, Shevantibai Nikambe, except that she was the Head of a school for young wives, widows, and grown-up girls from the high-caste Hindu community. This novel is a rare contribution to Indian fiction written in English, and to wom en s studies. Printed Pages: 148. 001055

Concept Publishing Company Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2014; 8180699978; Hardcover; New; New;
The Indian family has traditionally provided natural social security to the old people. However, in more recent times, institutions such as old age homes are sharing the traditional role of family due to some factors like increased urbanization, migration of younger adults of the family to towns and in some case to foreign countries and increased participation of women in paid employment outside the homes. As the proportion of elder people in the Indian population continues to increase, there are demand for increased in number of old age homes in India and consequent to these, there is need to ensure safety. Until recent times, ergonomics have tried to improve industrial situation by improving the condition of work but workstations and furniture in residential buildings particularly in old age homes have been neglected to a greater extent. As mass media becomes the most prominent site of public deliberation over science, multiple voices—both expert and non-expert—have begun to emerge, rewriting the social contract of science. In the new millennium, the Indian state of Kerala saw a number of scientific controversies being discussed in the regional newspapers. Set against the backdrop of case studies of three major public controversies, Contested Knowledge explores how these mediated disputes brought the otherwise hidden dynamics of scientific knowledge production into full public view. It examines critical questions about ‘medialized science’, such as: What is a scientific-citizenry? How did a ‘scientific public sphere’ develop in Kerala? How does public contestation of knowledge contribute to deliberative democracy by re-instilling politics into science? Are there limits to such a democratization of science? A fascinating commentary on the relation between science and society, this volume is a pioneering work that analyses the science–media–public interaction in a non-Western context. The City Palace at Udaipur is part of an exemplary living cultural heritage that has survived in an unbroken line of custodianship from medieval kingship to modern democracy. Mastering the Lens: Before and After Cartier-Bresson in Pondicherry
Mapin Publishing; New Delhi, India; 2013; 8189995731; Hardcover; New; New;
For many centuries, artists had been travelling to Pondicherry to document its serene vistas—an amalgamation of Christian and local elements in architecture, as well as the urban sprawl. Antiquarian maps from the 18th and 19th centuries reveal an intricately Europeanised Indian town, featuring a shared use of motifs and style. The arrival of commercial photographers Bourne and Shepherd, or indeed the mysterious French photographer C. (possibly Charles) Moyne, brings forth an expansive city of citadels and churches, with broadening boulevards lined with trees. The visual material is further complimented by some extraordinary images taken by Indian practitioners from the same period such as Tara Jauhar and Venkatesh Shirodkar at Aurobindo Ashram, published here for the first time.This publication emanates from an exhibition by the same title held in September 2012 in New Delhi. Drawn exclusively from The Alkazi Collection of Photography, at the core of this initiative is the unpublished album by renowned photographer Henri Cartier-Bresson, co-founder of Magnum Photos, who visited the Aurobindo Ashram in April 1950. He took the last pictures of Sri Aurobindo Ghosh in the company of his spiritual companion, ‘the Mother’. In addition, he meticulously penned his observations, creating a meta-text around the images, which presents a biographical and anecdotal supplement to his photographic endeavour. Over six decades after his death, Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi continues to play a role in inspiring the lives, thought and philosophy of nations and their leaders. Democracy in the Shadow of Civil Military Relations in Pakistan
KW Publishers; New Delhi, India; 2015; 9789383649327; First Edition; Softcover; New;
Pakistan was not born as a military state but the military has ruled the country more than the civilians in its short history. After partition, the military shaped the politics of Pakistan in several ways. Set of causes – historical, institutional and societal – are attributed to the decline of democratic institutions and the rise of military as the dominant political institution in Pakistan. Due to the ascent of military regimes, Pakistan did not follow the dominant paradigm of separation of civil-military institutions where the military plays a subservient role to the civilian authority. Rather the military became the supreme authority. This study attempts to explain the phenomena of civil-military relations in Pakistan vis-a-vis its implications for democracy. In this perspective, the study examines the causes of military dominance, the nature of civil-military relations and its implications for democracy. The study attempts to provide explanations based on the three principle axis: the first axis is historical and explores how different societies were formed in pre-colonial history, how colonial experience and post-Partition politics shaped civil-military relations the way it is in Pakistan. The second axis is analytical which explains the philosophy, composition and organisation of the military. Further, it also explains the nature and evolution of civil-military relations and the use of religion in legitimising authoritarianism in Pakistan. The final axis analyses, through empirical evidence, the impact of civil-military relations on democratic institutions in Pakistan. Even though democracy in Pakistan remained hostage to the confluence of negative forces, Pakistan’s citizens had the experience of engaging in electoral processes, however rigged. Given the history of sporadic progress of democracy in Pakistan, the last six years were exceptions as Pakistan witnessed the completion of the first civilian tenure and a successful democratic transition of power. Amid these changes, the study attempts to examine the recalibration of civil-military equations under the new civilian regime.Printed Pages: 80. 105053

Population and Reproductive Health in India: An Assessment of the Current Situation and Future Needs
Oxford University Press; New Delhi, India; 2014; 0198096232; Hardcover; New; New;
India has made great strides in improving the well-being of its population. Enrolment in primary school is almost universal, life expectancy has increased, maternal and infant mortality have declined, more couples have exercised their right to bear the children they want, and HIV rates have fallen. There exist policies, laws, and programmes that intend to advance general welfare and the exercise of informed choice and reproductive rights of women, men, and adolescents. Progress has, however, been uneven. Notwithstanding policy and programme commitments to meet the health and development needs of India`s population, their translation at the community and grassroots level is far from comprehensive and the most vulnerable populations remain unaware about their reproductive rights or are unable to exercise them. Child marriage continues to prevail, women continue to experience physical and sexual violence at home and outside of it, gender-biased sex selection is evident, and access to sexual and reproductive health services, including safe abortion, is compromised for many. Synthesizing both qualitative and quantitative data on youth, gender, reproductive health and rights, and population, from a variety of sources, this volume presents a composite assessment of the situation and provides directions for government strategies and programmes. The Economy of the Mughal Empire c. 1595: A Statistical Study (Second Edition)
Oxford University Press; New Delhi, India; 2015; 0199450544; Second Edition; Softcover; New;
Exploring the rich statistical material present in the earliest manuscripts of the A'in-i Akbari—the great official compilation of the Mughal empire—this book challenges and revises widely held views on the economic conditions of the day. It breaks new ground by subjecting the Indian economy c. 1595 to the same kind of quantitative analysis as is employed in the case of contemporary economics. First published in 1987, this seminal work on the economy of the Mughal empire now appears in its second revised and updated edition, with the addition of a new chapter on GDP. In its extensively revised form, the work is indispensable for anyone interested in the functioning of the economy of the Mughal Empire and its possible capacities for growth. It also provides a basis of comparison with the structure of India's colonial economy in the late nineteenth century, when a comparable range of statistics becomes available.Printed Pages: 496. 104494

The Scout: The Definitive Account of David Headley and the Mumbai Attacks
Bloomsbury Publishing India Pvt Ltd/Prakash Books; New Delhi, India; 9789385436666; Softcover; New;
The Scout traces the journey of David Headley, son of a Pakistani aristocrat and an American mother who easily straddled both the Islamic and the western worlds. It is a tale of deception and deceit, of audacity and ingenuity and a detailed account of a man who coldly and systematically conducted a series of reconnaissance missions that perfected the deadliest terrorist attack ever on Indian soil and left some of Mumbai?s signature destinations scarred forever.Set against the backdrop of the 2008 Mumbai terror attacks, which killed173 people and wounded hundreds more, the book follows the trail of a drug addict turned trafficker and DEA informant who then joined the ranks of the Lashkar-e-Taiba, after being inspired by an LeT poster he saw in Pakistan appealing for funds to help take the jihad to India. From there he played a key role in orchestrating the 26/11 attacks.Investigated by two professionals in the field of anti-terrorist operations,The Scout is a painstakingly researched and authentic account of the life and times of David Headley right until the time of his arrest whilst collaborating with the al-Qaeda and planning a public massacre in Denmark. Not only did Upal have such a dream, it was something he actually believed in and wished to accomplish someday. From a meagre background of almost non-existent means, Upal was plagued by unremitting and unpredictable hunger pangs. They drove him to abandon his scruples and grasp any and every opportunity which so much as flickered with the promise of money.He trampled his self-respect and clung like a parasite to childhood friend Subinoy’s household … all for a square meal a day.He slunk into the role of middleman in Subinoy’s extra-marital affair with sister-in-law, Preeti. Upon Subinoy’s orders, Upal romanced his friend’s wife to prepare the ground for Subinoy’s escape from wed- lock, all for the crunch of crisp notes in his pocket.From time to time, his conscience did attempt to awaken the human in him; but it was no match for the combined drive of Upal’s need and greed.Yet, was it worth? Ayurveda Indian System of Medicine
Chaukhamba Publications; New Delhi, India; 2004; First Edition; Softcover; New;
India has a large and well-trained force of practitioners of modern medicine. In addition, it has several types of traditional medicine, the largest of which is called Ayurvedic medicine. The ancestry of this type can be traced back 3,000 years or so, but it evolved into its current form from about 500 BC to AD 500. Based on Sanskrit texts, it has a wide following at every level of society. It is governmentally supported, has a defined curriculum, and has schools that grant degrees. Some of these schools are part of universities that may also have a modern Medical school. Like other major types of Asian traditional medicine, Ayurvedic medicine is based on humoral theories. That is, the human body is considered a microcosm of the universe. The seven body substances-bone, flesh, fat, blood, semen, marrow, and chyle-are the product of three humors : kapha, or phlegm, pitta, or bile; and vata, or wind. Health depends on the equilibrium of these humors, and sickness is a disequilibrium. The point of equilibrium depends on age, sex, temperament, climate, nutrition, and the nature of daily activities. Ayurvedic medicine is considered to be the Science of living to a great age, and emphasis is placed on Diet and the conduct of life. This introductory Book offers to demystify the concepts of this unique system of medicine and its methods of treatment in a simple language.Printed Pages: 206. 100639

Issues in Ethics and Applied Ethics Series: Socio-Political Ethics, Volume 3
Concept Publishing Company Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2017; 818069979X; Hardcover; New; New;
This volume raises some specific issues related to Socio-Political fields. The book raises a plethora problems of eminent Socio-Political urgency and at the same time offers best recipes which can cure the all-round crises: at the top stands moral crisis, as the mother of all crises and if it is at once brought to right positioning–would en-culture man and society, inspire mankind to live as one humanity rather run rough-shod in endless ‘divides’, which the same man is every moment spinning like spider’s cobwebs that encages, entraps all to vicious suffocation, to lose life even before death has come to the door steps. With moral canons at each one’s fists, a glittering dawn will not remain a distant, hoary, misty, phantasmagoria, but a stark handy reality. It is time to arise, awake and allow nobility to come through all sides stepping in divinization of human culture. Light is not absence of darkness but a positive gain, which will kill all evils–fanaticism, fundamentalism, Socio-religious economic and mental divide and will help usher in era of welfare, justice, human integration, goodwill, perpetual peace.
