Early Buddhist Monachism
Munshiram Manoharlal Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 1996; 8121501202; Reprint; Hard Cover; New; New; 14 Cms x 23 Cms
This treatise on the growth and early development of the Sangha (Buddhist Monastic Order) has often been referred to by scholars as the most complete and masterly treatment of the subject and, as such, invaluable to students of Buddhism. It has besides a peculiar importance in relation to the history of Indian culture, As the author says, "Indian culture is composite and the Buddhist contribution to it during the two millennia and a half that Buddhism was a living religion in India is so much a part and parcel of it that no true view of Indian culture is possible by ignoring the Buddhist contribution". This contribution was made through the organisation of Buddhist monkhood. The author has shown with a wealth of masterly scholarship how this organisation was established and developed in India. His chapters on the Patimokkha and Vinaya regulations of the monk community, the growth of coenobium among them, their internal polity of communal life, written from a scientific and historical point of view, are interestingly presented and will hold the general reader. First submitted anonymously as a prize-thesis to the University of Calcutta, it won the Griffith Memorial Prize in 1919. The verdict of the university examiners has been confirmed by Buddhistic scholars the world over who hailed it on its first publication as a work of exceptional originality and of great value in the study of Buddhism and Buddhist history. Fate and Fortune in the Indian Scriptures
Cambridge University Press; New Delhi, India; 2014; 9789382993889; Hardcover; New; New;
Fatalism is a philosophical doctrine which states that an individual does not have full control over the events that happen in his life. There is no trace of fatalism in the early Indian literature— Samhitas Brahmanas and Upanisads ; it surged in the succeeding period. This book argues that the predominance of the priestly class after the revival of Brahminism as an aftermath of the decline of Buddhism ushered in conspicuous changes in people’s attitude to life. The new modifications helped to entrench fate as a formidable force. It explains that the natural factors which led to the rise of fatalism were observation of the inexorability of death. The author has referred to a splendid array of scriptures ranging from the early and late Vedic literature Ramayana Mahabharata to Buddhist and Jain texts Bible and other old western texts to establish her erudite findings.Printed Pages: 328. 101475

Sage Publications; New Delhi, India; 2009; 8132101499; First Edition; Paperback; New;
India Policy Forum 2008–09 (Volume 5) comprises papers and highlights of the discussions from the fifth India Policy Forum (IPF) conference, held on July 15-16, 2008, in New Delhi. The annual examines India’s reforms and economic transition using policy-relevant empirical research. It generates theoretically rigorous and empirically informed research on important current and unfolding issues of Indian economic policy. The first paper examines the growth of private schools in India and their influence on the quality of education being imparted. It is an extension of the recent issues of this journal that have evaluated the performance of India’s education system. The second paper addresses the major question of why the growth of manufacturing output and employment in India has been disappointingly low. The final three papers share a common focus on India’s external financial relations. The third paper analyzes the process of capital account liberalization and the integration of India’s financial institutions into the global financial system. The fourth paper measures the evolution of prices in the nontradable and tradable sectors of the Indian economy and seeks explanations for the rise in the relative price of nontradables. Vishnu (With Special Reference to Epigraphy and Coins)
Sharada Publishing House; Delhi, India; 2015; 8188934925; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New; 19 x 26 Cm
Visnu is the object of worship as the Supreme Deity of Vaisnavism, which is one of the most important cult that came into existence some centuries before the Christian Era. A study of epigraphical evidence discloses a variety of names and attributes of Visnu known throughout north India. He has been called Visnu and Vasudeva in the Gujarat-Saurashtra region; Purusottama, Rajivalochana and Upendra in central India; and Narayana, Trivikrama and Chaturbhuja in eastern India. In the Upper Ganga valley region, he is addressed as Adikesava and Chandra-madhava. With the elaborate nomenclature, the attribute of the god are equally impressive in number and variety. The chakra, kaustubha, Garuda and sankha which are very often in the inscriptions described are traditionally associated with Visnu.The book is mainly concerned with the historical development and mythological associations of Visnu. Though his presence is too conspicuous in ancient Indian art and literature, but the profile of the Visnu provided by the epigraphical annals has its own importance. The accounts that follows, provide glimpses into the adoration of the God Visnu, in a somewhat chronological order, as available in the epigraphical annals from earliest times. There are almost fifteen hundred (1500) inscriptions belonging to second century BCE to twelfth century CE, cover the entire geographical limits. These inscriptions have been issued by the royal authority and private donors. Invariably they indicate the name of ruling authorities and the common people, the occasion, the purpose of the grant and also usually the date on which the record was incised.Printed Pages: Printed Pages: 210 with 45 b/w illustrations. 106089

Westland Limited; New Delhi, India; 9789383260287; Softcover; New;
In the lush forests of Sakleshpura, a tribal man dies under mysterious circumstances, his body branded with words in an ancient Kannada script and only the eerie silhouette of a young woman to be seen. Nearby, in modern-day Bangalore’s concrete jungle, Neel, young, handsome and till now carefree, uneasily wonders if his friends on the party circuit are playing a prank on him, his penthouse reeks of charred flesh and he thought he saw a young woman out of the corner of his eye. Meanwhile, at the other end of the Sakleshpura forest reserve, newly-married Shivaranjini experiences a devastating seizure, emerging with a terrifying new personality. What are the mysterious forces at work here and how are all these things related? How does an audacious kidnapping investigated by a svelte police officer fit in? Princely Palaces in New Delhi
Niyogi Books; New Delhi, India; 9789383098910; Hardcover; New; New;
Rajas and maharajas from all over the British Indian Empire congregated in Delhi to attend the great Delhi Durbar of 1911. A new capital city was born—New Delhi. Soon after, the princely states came up with elaborate palaces in the “new” Imperial capital—Hyderabad House, Baroda House, Jaipur House, Bikaner House, Patiala House, to name a few.Why did the British government allot prime land to the princely states and how? How did the construction come up and under whose architectural design? Who occupied these palaces and what were the events held? What happened to these palatial buildings after the integration of the states with the Indian Republic?This book delineates the story behind the story, documenting history through archival research, interviews with royalty and unpublished photographs from royal private collections.These princely palaces form an integral part of New Delhi’s urban topography. Built about a century ago for purposes that may not be of relevance anymore, these palaces are the relics of the past passed on to posterity, speaking of a time that was part of the continual process of knitting an unstitched destiny.A colourful procession in full regalia, uniformed men guarding the palaces, fluttering flags of myriad hues, saxophones regaling the guests, the tinkling of wine glasses… slip into a time-warp till you encounter the modern.Printed Pages: 264 with 140 colour photographs. 106571

Southern Postcolonialisms: The Global South and 'New' Literary Representations
Routledge; New Delhi, India; 2008; 0415484472; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New; 15 x 23 Cm
Southern Postcolonialisms is an anthology of critical essays on new literary representations from the Global South that seeks to re-invent/reorient the ideological, disciplinary, aesthetic, and pedagogical thrust of Postcolonial Studies in accordance with the new and shifting politico-economic realities/transactions between the North and the South, as well as within the Global South, in an era of globalization. Since the emergence of Postcolonial Theory in the 1980s, the shape of the world has changed dramatically. Old Cold War boundaries have shifted in the wake of the collapse of communism, Globalization, on an unprecedented scale, has dramatically changed the meaning of time and space. The rise of the US as a new imperial power has profound implications for the world order. In the South, new emerging markets have challenged the older division of industrial ‘first world’ and non-industrial ‘third world’. In most parts of the world, the academy is struggling to keep up with these developments. One result has been a major transnational turn in the humanities and social sciences. Terms like ‘world history’, ‘globalization’, ‘glocalization’ and ‘transnationalism’ now dominate academic agendas worldwide. These changing circumstances raise far-reaching questions. What does the new emerging world order mean for established models of postcolonial theory? Is postcolonialism as a field of study being overtaken by models of globalization and transnationalism? What implications do the new configurations in the South have for postcolonial theory? This volume, drawn from a major literary conference at Delhi University, provides a set of perspectives on these questions. With a majority of contributions by scholars from the South, these research articles have a dual focus – they revisit older debates on postcolonial theory, while suggesting new perspectives and directions. Zubaan/Atlantic Publishers & Distributors Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2011; 8189884999; Softcover; New;
Making the case for a new kind of visual history, The Goddess and the Nation charts the pictorial life and career of Bharat Mata, ?Mother India,? the Indian nation imagined as mother/goddess, embodiment of national territory, and unifying symbol for the country?s diverse communities. Soon after her appearance in the late nineteenth century, artists began to picture her in various media, incorporating the map of India into her visual persona. Passions of the Tongue: Language Devotion in Tamil India, 1891-1970
Munshiram Manoharlal Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 1998; 8121508525; First Indian Edition; Hardbound; New; New; 16.5 Cms x 25 Cms
Why would love for their language lead several men in southern India to burn themselves alive in its name? Passions of the Tongue analyzes the discourses of love, labor, and life that transformed Tamil into an object of such passionate attachment, producing in the process one of modern India's most intense movements for linguistic revival and separatism. Sumathi Ramaswamy suggests that these discourses cannot be contained within a singular metanarrative of linguistic nationalism and instead proposes a new analytic: "language devotion." She uses this concept to track the many ways in which Tamil was imagined by its speakers and connects these multiple imaginings to their experience of colonial and post-colonial modernity. Focusing in particular on the transformation of the language into a goddess, mother, and maiden, Ramaswamy explores the pious, filial, and erotic aspects of Tamil devotion; she considers why, as its speakers sought political and social empowerment, metaphors of motherhood eventually came to dominate representations of the language. In vigorously arguing for a cultural history that reveals the structures of sentiments and the ideologies of love that emerge around a language, Passions of the Tongue allows us to understand how languages can inspire their speakers to devote themselves zealously to their cause. Incredible Ascents to Everest
Lustre Press/Roli Books; New Delhi, India; 8174367624; Hardcover; New; New;
Standing 8848 metres above sea level, Mt Everest is a geographical giant. Ever since it was established that the mountain is indeed the tallest in the world humans have tried to taming it. The terrain is treacherous, the weather unpredictable and the atmospheric conditions extreme; danger of injury, illness, delirium and even death is ever present. Despite this, over the last 90 years, hundreds of men and women have attempted this perilous journey to the peak, and many have lived not only to tell the tale, but bask in the warm glory of the fame that this achievement naturally brings with it. But it is more than a quest for fame, that drives ordinary people to undertake this most extraordinary challenge of all. For people like George Leigh Mallory and the men of his generation the challenge was not just personal, they were attempting to scale the mountain on behalf of humanity. It was 29 years after Mallory’s disappearance that Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay became the first people to stand on the peak of Mt Everest. The mountain, it seemed, could be tamed. Those who came after were driven by a variety of reasons, but whatever their motivation, each of the climbers included in this book overcame extraordinary odds to reach the top of the world’s tallest mountain. In the process not only did they create history, they also shattered stereotypes to redefine the limits of possibility. Printed Pages: 224. 108611

Women's Livelihood Rights: Recasting Citizenship for Development
Sage Publications; New Delhi, India; 2007; 0761936009; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New;
This interdisciplinary book brings together different dimensions of women's livelihood, citizenship and development. It unravels the patriarchal structure of natural resource policy in India and argues that the context of citizenship needs to be extended to include the right to recognition of ways of living and livelihood, so that women take their legitimate space as productive human beings, entitled to dignity as a political right, and not merely to protection and welfare. The chapters in the book reflect the interrelatedness of several complex themes: the need to recognize resource rights together with livelihood strategies; the challenges of democratic governance and of restructuring institutional systems; the role of women's collective agency in development and the lessons that emerge from women's struggle for dignity and livelihood. India Since 1980
Cambridge University Press; New Delhi, India; 2011; 1107020271; Hardcover; New; New;
This book considers the remarkable transformations that have taken place in India since 1980 a period that began with the assassination of the formidable Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. Her death and that of her son Rajiv seven years later marked the end of the Nehru-Gandhi era. Although the country remains one of the few democracies in the developing world many of the policies instigated by these earlier regimes have been swept away to make room for dramatic alterations in the political economic and social landscape. Sumit Ganguly and Rahul Mukherji two leading political scientists of South Asia chart these developments with particular reference to social and political mobilization the rise of the BJP and its challenge to Nehruvian secularism and the changes to foreign policy that in combination with its meteoric economic development have ensured India a significant place on the world stage. Asian Rivalries: Conflict, Escalation and Limitations on Two-level Games
Cambridge University Press; New Delhi, India; 2012; 9789382264095; Hardcover; New; New;
The most typical treatment of international relations is to conceive it as a battle between two antagonistic states volleying back and forth. In reality interstate relations are often at least two-level games in which decision-makers operate not only in an international environment but also in a competitive domestic context. Given that interstate rivalries are responsible for a disproportionate share of discord in world politics this book sets out to explain just how these two-level rivalries really work. By reference to specific cases specialists on Asian rivalries examine three related questions: what is the mix of internal (domestic politics) and external (interstate politics) stimuli in the dynamics of their rivalries; in what types of circumstances do domestic politics become the predominant influence on rivalry dynamics; when domestic politics become predominant is their effect more likely to lead to the escalation or de-escalation of rivalry hostility? By pulling together the threads laid out by each contributor the editors create a ‘grounded theory’ for interstate rivalries that breaks new ground in international relations theory.Printed Pages: 268. 101470

India's Late, Late Industrial Revolution: Democratizing Entrepreneurship
Cambridge University Press; New Delhi, India; 1107032997; Hardcover; New; New;
There is a paradox at the heart of the Indian economy. Indian businessmen and traders are highly industrious and ingenious people yet for many years Indian industry was sluggish and slow to develop. One of the major factors in this sluggish development was the command and control regime known as the License Raj. This regime has gradually been removed and after two decades of reform India is now awakening from its slumber and is experiencing a late late industrial revolution. This important new book catalogues and explains this revolution through a combination of rigorous analysis and entertaining anecdotes about India's entrepreneurs Indian firms' strategies and the changing role of government in Indian industry. This analysis shows that there is a strong case for a manufacturing focus so that India can replicate the success stories of Asian countries such as Japan South Korea and China.Printed Pages: 452 with 32 b/w illustrations & 44 tables. 101418

Beyond Nationalism Frames: Relocating Postmodernism, Hindutva, History
Permanent Black; New Delhi, India; 2010; 8178240866; Fourth Impression; Paperback; New; 14 x 22 Cm
The political context in which the historian of India finds himself today, says Sumit Sarkar, is dominated by the advance of the Hindu Right and globalised forms of capitalism. Simultaneously, the historian’s intellectual context is now dominated by the marginalisation of all varieties of Marxism and an academic shift to cultural studies and postmodern critiques. In this scenario, how may a thinking historian who retains an unfashionable commitment to socialist-feminist values, alongside a democratic political vision formulated within Indian conditions of skewed social development, practice the craft of history? This excellent set of essays collectively constitutes Sumit Sarkar’s answer to this central question. The ‘Hindu Bomb’, the history of relations between communities, the issue of religious propagation and conversion, ideas of nation and woman in Tagore’s fiction, and the relationship of left-wing historiography to postmodern ideas are some of the themes critically analysed in this major collection. Modern Times: India 1880s-1950s (Environment, Economy, Culture)
Orient BlackSwan/Permanent Black; New Delhi, India; 2014; 8178244705; First Edition; Softcover; New; 14 x 22 Cm
Much has changed in the world of South Asian history-writing since Sumit Sarkar’s renowned classic, Modern India (1983). “The passage of thirty years having rendered that work thoroughly dated, the futility of any attempt to revise it became increasingly clear to me, especially as over this period my own historical perspectives took new and unexpected directions”, says the author. The present work is an entirely fresh view of the same period. Focusing on three huge areas — Economy, Environment, and Culture — Professor Sarkar offers his magisterial perspective on these.Scientific discourses, laws, forest administration, peasants and adivasis, irrigation, and conflicts over land-use are examined, as are agrarian relations, commercialization, indebtedness, and famine. Trade, finance, and industry are other major focus areas.Modern urban India is scrutinized via the literature on its big cities. Sociabilities, caste configurations, and public culture (theatre, cinema, and sports) are discussed, as are literature, dance, music, and painting. In conclusion, says Professor Sarkar, "I have within each chapter incorporated the relevant historiographical developments, changes, and debates. Separate bibliographical sections will I hope facilitate the work of teachers and students." Printed Pages: 478. 102267

Women and Social Reform in Modern India, 2 Vols
Orient BlackSwan; New Delhi, India; 2011; 817824327X; Softcover; New;
The subject of social reforms has routinely formed a part of Indian history texts. The word 'reforms' conjures up the names of a few great individuals: always Hindu, always upper-caste and educated, always from cities, and always--apart from one or two memorable exceptions--men. These are the icons around whom the story of social change is written. The editors of the present work argue the need to understand the history of social reforms from a much wider array of perspectives: for example, the connections between specific social abuses on the one hand, and, on the other, systems or traditions of gender practices across times, classes, castes, and regions. For instance, when we look at widow immolation or widow remarriage practices, we need to look also at the larger domain of gender relations which sanctified immolation or which outlawed widow remarriage. What arguments were used? What aspects of these practices did the reformers ignore? How did the orthodox practitioners defend such traditions? There are also, say Sumit and Tanika Sarkar, other curious omissions in the existing literature: 'Most reforms passed through the grid of state legislation. Yet, there is little engagement even with the law-making machinery ... and far less with the judicial courts that enforced the laws and dealt with disputes around the new laws.' Such omissions are addressed, and many interesting questions raised and discussed, in this impressive collection of writings.Printed Pages: 870. 101882

Unfreedom and Waged Work: Labour in India's Manufacturing Industry
Sage Publications; New Delhi, India; 2009; 8178299402; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New;
Unfreedom and Waged Work: Labour in India’s Manufacturing Industry provides an update on the debates relating to the work and welfare of industrial labour in India. Concentrating on factory workers in India’s organized manufacturing industry, the study analyses, on the basis of official statistics as well as field survey data, the poor status of workers even in this relatively regulated sector, in terms of jobs and the related absence of ‘security’ that provides the content of ‘unfreedom of waged labour’ as discussed in this book. The key features of the book are as follows: - A critical survey of the neo-liberal theories relating to wages, employment and labour flexibility. - A three-digit classification of industry data in India to explain the recent phase of ‘job-less growth’ including casualization. - Firm-level data to test the impact of opening up of economy on output and employment. - A large body of primary field-survey data on work, education, age, skill, casualization and living conditions of workers, presented through reader-friendly tables and figures. - A labour security index for different categories of workers which shows the declining levels of various forms of labour security in terms of income, work, financial status, etc. - A critical look at the recommendations of the National Commission of Labour with its advocacy of labour market flexibility and an undermining of the role of trade unions. The book will attract a wide readership amongst students and researchers in social sciences and social activists and policy makers within the country and overseas. Printed Pages: 248. 028534

The Trends of Philosophical Thought in Mahabharata
Bharatiya Kala Prakashan; Delhi, India; 2011; 8180902749; Hardcover; New; New;
Foreword. Preface. 1. Introduction. 2. The Vedanta philosophy in the Mahabharata. 3. The Samkhya philosophy in the Mahabharata. 4. The Yoga philosophy as reflected in the Mahabharata. 5. Miscellaneous. 6. Conclusion. Bibliography. Index.The Mahabharata is a rich mine of philosophical speculations and the source of many inchoate systems of philosophy. As an encyclopaedia of Indian culture, it has accommodated the important thought ferments of that period. If philosophy is reflection upon varieties of human experience, or rational, methodological and systematic consideration of these topics which are of great concern to man, the great epic, the Mahabharata is really a book of philosophy. Its vast canvas encompass all aspects of human life in the early age of Indian culture which were later on crystallized into various Darsanas of Indian philosophy. They were mainly six and practically incorporated the Indian thinking of those days. The Mahabhrata has given respectable place to almost all of them and consequently has become encyclopaedic in nature. Mrs. Joshi has taken an excellent survey of all those thoughts in her book entitled The Trends of Philosophical Thought in the Mahabharata. Printed Pages: 354. 110676

Sarasvatikanthabharanam, Vol. I
Indira Gandhi National Centre for the Arts/MLBD; New Delhi, India; 2009; Hardcover; New; New;
The Sarasvatika??habhara?am is a work on poetics (Bhoja has another work on grammar under the same name). This encyclopaedic compilation is a record of the wide range of human experience and knowledge that interested Bhoja. It discusses the usual topics of poetics in an unusual manner- do?a, gu?a, do?agu?a, ala?kara, rasa, d?sya and sravya kavya. There are many earlier editions of this work, some with even two commentaries. But this alone has an English translation. The text has been exhaustively and incisively edited, without obscuring Bhoja's thought and intent.Poetry cannot be fitted into rigid classes either of matter or of manner. Rightfully is Bhoja unfettered by the terms and definitions, armed with which writers try to study "great poetry". Bhoja has a practical approach and does not involve in the speculation on the soul of poetry. He holds rasa to be the crux of poetry. S??gara is the foremost which can gather into itself all the other rasas. Bhoja uses Abhimana and aha?ara as synonymous with rasa. It is, hence, inferred that the identification with the action and with the chief character, on the part of the reader, brings about this delight. The self-transcending state of aesthetic delight, spoken of by Abhinavagupta may be a more advanced stage of this joy.Printed Pages: 466. 101618

Voice of the Void: Aesthetics of the Buddhist Mandala on the Basis of the Doctrine of Vak in Trika Saivism
D.K. Printworld (P) Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2015; 8124607567; First Edition; Hardcover; New; Nerw; 15 x 23 Cm
The research undertaken here about Buddhist mandalas is basically designed under the philosophical question how the visible dimensions of forms are related to their invisible contents. The textual sources in reference to Buddhist mandalas teach that the essence of mandalas is shunya (void) and their forms are the reflective images (pratibimba) of shunya. This volume investigates how the colourful form of Buddhist mandalas represents the prime concept of shunya, and what makes these mandalas visually powerful, leaving the impression of "spiritual enhancement" in the heart of people who do not even know about the Buddhist doctrines. The mandalas permanently represented in the monastic complexes of Tabo and Alchi in the Western Himalayas have been focused in order to examine a prominent role of visual dimensions of mandalas. In order to comprehend mandalas in the context of Buddhist philosophy, the texts of the Yoga-Tantra class have been looked up. Especially, the references to the tantric visualization-practice throw light on the internal experiences with mandalas. Considering the fact that the Buddhist mandalas have been developed as a method of Mantrayana, being always combined with mantras and mudras, this volume presents the concept of vak (word, subtle sound, voice) as a key to explain how the ultimate state of shunya and perceptible forms of mandalas are related to each other. The doctrine of vak developed in the tradition of Trika Shaivism in Kashmir provides us with a systematic way to explain the non-dualism between all phenomenal objects and the Supreme Divine. The doctrine of four levels of vak is examined in the book for the purpose of interpreting the aesthetic phenomena and structuring the different levels of meanings of mandalas from the aesthetic perspective. On the basis of the vak theory, the external forms of mandalas have been explored and their visual principles have been technically analysed, in attempt to answer the question: how do the colourful forms of Buddhist mandalas resemble the formless shunya?
