The Management and Ethics Omnibus: Management By Values Ethics in Management Values and Ethics for Organizations
Oxford University Press; New Delhi, India; 2001; 0195656237; First Edition; Hard Cover; New; New; 215 x 140 Mm
This omnibus comprises three outstanding books by Professor S.K. Chakraborty, a recognized authority on the subject of management and ethics. The books focus on the need for value-driven management and corporate ethics. The author provides here a substantive introduction on the theme. Management by Values, first published in 1991 is based on the premise that values are as germane as skills for effective management of industrial and commercial organizations. This work shifts focus from the empirical and practical to the ideal and the normative, from organizational' to individual' values, in the conviction that organizational values essetially stem from individual values rather than the other way round. Globally competitive and locally effective organizations depend ultimately on the cultivation of practical ethics and sound human values. Ethics in Management integrates western management skills and systems with a holistic home-grown cultural ethos. From an overall perspectiv e of Vedantic ethical vision and its application to managerial and corporate ethical morality, Professor Chakraborty examines what that system can teach us about individual leadership, transformation of the work ethos, ethics and productivity. Values and Ethics for Organizations in which he uses several case studies to demonstrate the practical application of Vedantic principles and ethics to the real world of business is almost a sequel to his previous works on the subject. The cases illustrate the dilemmas and choices of the modern manager -rewards, overtime, transfers, personal growth, debtors and creditors. These are all analysed using Indian theories and concepts of economic development. Printed Pages: 960. 003549

Nature and Structure of Rural Habitation
Concept Publishing Company Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 1990; 8170222532; Hardcover; New; New;
Since times immemorial man habitations has been engaging his attention. It has been an area of concern and study by a number of disciplines. But each of these disciplines has been studying only certain aspects of this multi faceted problem. Moreover, the approaches followed by all these disciplines have been lopsided, suffering from a serious physical bias. The habitation pattern of any community being the resultant of a long drawn process of interaction between its physical and social environment, a physical approach to the problem alone cannot help in unraveling the mysteries and understanding its mechanism. At the micro level, cultural geographers have been concentrating on morphological classification of the house types and description of features. Little has been done to link these forms to the culture and the way of life it shelters. Such descriptions in the sociological and anthropological literature are also mainly descriptive rather than analytical. The house itself is not merely a shell for protection, it reflects the life and culture of its inhabitants. There is an order in the house, physical spaces have social meanings. After an intensive review of the published literature, the author conducted field-work in a Haryana village and attempted to arrive at the sets and patterns of the structure of classification as embedded in the social structure of the community. The book is the outcome of theoretical as well as field-work and author long first-hand professional experiences in the rural area of Bihar, Delhi, Haryana, Punjab, Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh. This work, therefore, is a pioneering one. Printed Pages: 358. 112397

Educational Development of Scheduled Castes: Looking Ahead
Gyan Books Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2001; 8121206324; Hardcover; New; New;
Recognising the role of education as an effective instrument for bringing about changes in Scheduled Castes in their socio-economic and socio-cultural conditions in an elaborate programme of pre-Matric and post-Matric scholarships, reservations of seats in the schools and colleges, establishement of hostels and ashram schools and many other beneficial schemes are in operation for the last five decades. It is of considerable interest to find out how these facilities have been actually beneficial for them and what is the level of their progress in the field of education. This book is aimed at knowing the truth in this regard. In fact, the educational progress of the Scheduled Castes suffers from two deficiencies; first, they lag very much behind the rest of the population in their educational achievement and second, among them some group have made far more, rapid progress than others. The benefits of the special educational facilities for the Scheduled Castes have not accrued equitable to the most backward communities among them. As a result, severe interand intra-caste and intra-and intra-state differentials have given rise to a separate class among them. This study based on the data, identifies the castes and the caste-groups which have benefited due to differential utilization of the incentives and other protective programmes and suggests measures to bring about an all round educational development of the Scheduled Castes. A bold and pragmatic step is called for to give a new orientation to the present policy of educational development of the Scheduled Castes, if we are really interested in ushering in equality through education.Printed Pages: 448. 106000

Making the Poor Free: India's Unique Identification Number
Oxford University Press; New Delhi, India; 0199453292; Hardcover; New; New;
The proposed monograph evaluates the impact of Unique Identification (UID) number programme (also called the Aadhar programme) initiated by the Government of India. The UID programme is aimed at making it easier for Indian citizens to avail the benefits of government-sponsored services and development schemes. The author examines how the UID can help the masses of India, especially the rural poor, by reducing corruption and promoting greater financial inclusivity. Positing the theoretical framework of `governmentality` by the French philosopher Michel Foucault, the author critically analyses the current Indian scenario and maintains that while the Aadhaar programme`s contribution in the implementation of several schemes, such as the public distribution system, The Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme, or other initiatives in education or public health sectors could only be modest, it will indeed create a platform for `financial inclusion` of the poor-providing them easy access to the formal financial mechanism.In fifteen chapters covering the evolution of different schemes of the Indian government that have, over the years, sought to provide identification; enrolment to and functioning of Aadhar; the Unique Identification Authority of India; and the legal framework involved in the process, this volume is an in-depth analysis of this unique and controversial programme in India. Psychology of Meditations: A Contexual Approach
Concept Publishing Company Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2002; 8170229324; Hardcover; New; New;
Scientific studies on the nature effects of meditation have steadily increased in the last four decades. Most of them have focused on the healing potential of meditative practices. Meditation as a way of exploring different states of consciousness has also been investigated. Yet, controversy surrounds regarding the approach and strategies followed in meditation purely as a psychological technique that can be put into use to achieve any intended goal is dissented. It is forcefully argued that such an approach has done injustice to the original meaning and significance of meditation. To put it metaphorically, contemporary thrust on meditation is like using a space ship to lift cargo across a ten kilometer distance Need for examining meditative phenomena contextually is emphasised. This book examines some of the above issues and reports a research study conducted from a contextual viewpoint. The findings of the study suggest that the understanding of the phenomenon of meditation depends on the meditator, or the person, as a context. The findings also indicate that the process of meditation is dynamic. That means as the meditator undergoes changes in one belief system, values, expectations, and perceptions one meditation practice changes. Several properties discussed under the three categories interact simultaneously to determine the phenomenon. Thus, to conceptualise meditation as a univariate phenomenon may be grossly erroneous. It is, therefore, more appropriate to treat it as a multivariate phenomenon. The findings have implications for the research strategies to be adopted. Printed Pages: 84. 112116

The Sawants of Wadi and the Portuguese: Coastal Politics in 18th and 19th Centuries
Concept Publishing Company Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 1984; 8170221315; Hardcover; New; New;
Awantwadi is an integral part of the Konkan region which is in the mid-western coast of India. Geographically adjacent to Goa. it is a fertile region with a variety of crops and abundant flora and fauna. Sawantwadi had a chequered history from the time of its inclusion in the Chalukya dominions during the reign of Pulakesin ll's son Chandraditya. Khem Sawant's rule from 1701 to 1709 was all too brief but its importance lies in the fact that it was during this period that the foundation of the state were laid on a sound footing. Dr. Mhamai makes a fascinating narrative of Khem Sawant's role in the history of this state. Dr. Mhamai's is the first comprehensive and authentic account of the activites of the Sawants of Wadi in the context of coastal politics in the 18th and 19th centuries. The only earlier publication in this area was Vital Sitaram Pingulkar's History of Sawanwadi in 1911. The author has made maximum use of archival material and has greatly enhanced the value of his monograph He has appended Portuguese and Marathi documents in support of his study. A summary of Marathi documents, an exhaustive glossary of Marathi words, an excellent bibliography and an index that will satisfy the most discerning of critics, make this a welcome addition to the small but growing literature on Indo-Portuguese history. Cultural Heritage of Ancient India
Abhinav Publications/Kaveri Books; New Delhi, India; 8170171709; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New;
"India has a long continuous history extending over five thousand years. Besides, it had a population which, with the sole exception of China, is the largest single aggregation of humanity in the whole course of world’s history. It has also had a way of life and culture, no doubt modified continuously by outside contacts, but essentially Indian, based on doctrines and ideas developed indigenously. This way of life has found noble expression in classical and modern literature, in art and architecture, which display and unbounded creative energy and which have had a lasting influence on most Asian countries, in philosophies, religions and religious systems which continue to be vital forces even in the world today, when civilization is so extensive in space and time. 108040

In moving words, he recounted incidents from the last days of Maharaj, and the indelible impact the great sage left upon anyone who came into contact with him.To commemorate the 25th anniversary of Maharaj’s ‘Mahasamadhi’, we bring you the evocative speech made by Mullarpattan. One that recreates the magnetism of Sri Nisargadatta Maharaj; the dramatic turn events took during this time; the loving and attentive care which his family and followers always provided; and, above all, Maharaj’s own detached attitude towards his final days, till he breathed his last.Printed Pages: 40. 103494

Visnu Kosha

Ramachandra Rao has completed the Devata Panchayatana which consists of Ambika (covered by Durga Kosha), Ganesha (covered by Ganesha Kosha), Surya (covered by Navagraha Kosha in two volumes), Siva (covered by Siva Kosha in two volumes) and Vishnu (the present volume). As in the other volumes, the treatment of the subject matter is also encyclopaedic in character, and fully illustrated with line drawings and photographs. Relevant textual references have also been given. Vishnu is a popular Devata all over the country and the antiquity of the worship of this god goes back to the vedic corpus. There are several Vishnu Suktas in Rg Veda Samhita. It was a work of love to offer this volume at the sacred feet of this great god who has been Prof. Rao's Kula Devata as well as Ishta Devata. This volume incorporates not only the general details of this godhead, but also the celebrated forms like the twenty four Murtis and the ten Avataras. Also included in the volume are details of Parivara Devatas of Vishnu like Lakshmi, Garuda, Ananta, Sudarshana, Hanuman and Vishvakscna.Printed Pages: 398. 101168

Munshiram Manoharlal Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 1975; 8121502888; First Edition; Cloth; New; New; 19 Cms x 25 Cms
This volume is an attempt at a connected history of Indian Sculpture setting forth in clear terms the varied trends and artistic whole. The learned scholar has traced the history of Indian sculpture from the beginning to the mediaeval times bringing within his scope a vast field of study. Special emphasis is laid on the origin and development of the basic strains as well as fundamental characteristics of Indian plastic art in a historical perspective. Plastic art of the subcontinent found expression in many important schools and distinctive styles. It has been the endeavour of the author to interpret the changes of form through the ages as a logical, orderly and organic evolution. A Survey of Indian Sculpture, divided into seven chapters, deals with the story of the plastic art of the subcontinent as long as it remained vital and active. The book will immensely help the interested reader to understand and comprehend clearly this rich legacy of Indian genius and mind. Printed Pages: 256 with 181 b/w illustrations. 032702

Aesthetics: Approaches, Concepts and Problems
D.K. Printworld (P) Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2010; 8124605556; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New; 15 x 23 Cm
This work may well be expected to serve as an introduction to the study of aesthetics, suitable alike to the needs of our students and the general reader. A fair part of it deals with some of the more difficult concepts and problems one encounters in contemporary Western philosophical discourse on art. At the same time, the book is studded with illustrative references to contemporary aesthetic practice in India. This is true of almost every individual chapter; and the close is provided by a critical and comprehensive, yet intelligible account of the Indian theory of rasa, to which some eminent Western aestheticians, such as Susanne K. Langer and Harold Osborne, have referred admiringly in some of their basic writings. What should make this book specially attractive to enquiring readers is its consistent attempt to reflect on teasing aesthetical questions with clarity. Printed Pages: 455. 100349

Hijras: The Labelled Deviants
Gyan Books Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2000; 8121202663; Hardcover; New; New;
The present study "Hijras : The Labelled Deviants" is the outcome of the help rendered to me by my teachers and friends. I, therefore, consider it my great privilege to express my deep sense of gratitude towards all of them. To begin with, it was Prof. Prakash N. Pimpley, my teacher, who suggested to me to work on Eunuchs (Hijras). Since there was hardly any work available on the subject the study seemed to be an uphill task. However, it was Prof. Pimpley's help and inspiration that the study could make steady progress. For all his help I remain indebted to him.Since the field work constituted the major and most vital aspect of the study, I wish to put on record the help and cooperation of Mr. Vijay Shandilya, my cousin, who helped me by arranging a meeting with a hijra. It is in the context of my first encounter with a hijra that I would like to mention the timely help of Prof. A. Mahajan, currently Chairman of Department of Sociology, Panjab University, Chandigarh. An unhealthy situation arose after the interview with the first case at village Kansal near Chandigarh. The contact-man, through whom the hijra was approached, was assaulted and threatened by the latter of dire consequences. Prof. Mahajan, on my request, immediately responded and with the help of police solved the problem. It was because of that further field work could be carried out. I express my sincere thanks to him.In carrying out the field work, my friend and class-fellow, Mr. S.S. Shergill, currently advocate, Punjab and Haryana High Court, Chandigarh, helped me enormously. He accompanied me to different places and even interviewed one of the most informative and important cases at Jalandhar. His constant help and encouragement was in fact the pivot of the entire field work. I thank him.It was with the help of my teachers and friends that the first report, in the form of a dissertation, could be prepared. Subsequently, two papers entitled "Eunuchs : Past and Present" (The Eastern Anthropologist, Vol. 37, and later abstracted in Sociological Abstracts of ISA) and "Hijra : A Study of An Atypical Role (with Prof. P.N. Pimpley) (Avadh Jr. of Soc. Sciences, Vol. II and later abstracted in Sociological Abstracts of ISA) were published. This renewed my interest in the. subject. It was at this time that I happened to meet Prof. Serena Nanda of John Jay College of Criminal Justice, New York (USA). My brief discussion and subsequent exchange of articles with her helped me tremendously. In fact, her comments on my already published papers helped me to make necessary amendments in my already written draft of this book. For the cooperation and useful comments, I remain grateful to Prof. Nanda. I also thank Prof. Rajeshwar Prasad, Director, Institute of Social Sciences, Agra University, Agra; Mr. Thomas Smith, with whom I could correspond through Prof. Prasad; and Prof. A.M. Shah, Department of Sociology, University of Delhi, Delhi; for sending me their respective papers. In fact, their papers were the only literature to begin with in the context of hijras. Also, I would like to make special mention of my friend, Mr. Mohinder P. Singh, for carefully going through the draft of this study and making useful comments for certain necessary modifications in the introductory chapter.I wish to mention my wife, Suman, who is a constant source of encouragement to me. She inspired me to complete this work. Her careful readings of the work helped in clarifying many ideas expressed in this book.Last but not the least, I sincerely thank Mr. Pardesi for the excellent typing of the manuscript.Printed Pages: 151. 105943
