Integrated Water Resources Management in South and South-East Asia
Oxford University Press; New Delhi, India; 2005; 0195669320; First Edition; Paperback; New; 14 Cms x 22 Cms
The concept of integrated water resources management (IWRM) is not new: it has been around for over two generations. During the 1990s, this concept was rediscovered by some international institutions, and they have since then promoted it extensively all over the world. There is no question that IWRM has now become a mainstream idea. While it is conceptually attractive, it is still an open question as to what extent it is possible to move from the concept to the implementation phase. It is thus absolutely critical to analyse to what extent IWRM has been applied to improve water management practices and processes at the operational level. The book answers this question for South and Southeast Asia, based on a series of comprehensive case studies which were prepared by leading authorities from Bangladesh, India, Malaysia, Nepal, Thailand and Vietnam, as well as for the Mekong River as a whole. The case studies assess the status of application of IWRM in the region, what are the results of such attempts, and identify their successes, failures and constraints. Printed Pages: 300. 009034

From Village Elder to British Judge: Custom, Customary Law and Tribal Society
Orient BlackSwan; New Delhi, India; 2012; 8125045570; Hardcover; New; New;
From Village Elder to British Judge examines the definition and redefinition of custom/ law in the context of the adivasis of Jharkhand during pre-colonial and colonial times. As a significant historical account, this book engages with the contemporary assertion of indigenous identity that draws boundaries between the adivasi as a custom-governed and law-governed people.The work draws on previously untapped oral historical evidence from Village Papers, conventional archives and published sources, including details of court cases vividly depicting the adivasi ways of life in the past. Deploying jurisprudential, sociological and anthropological approaches, it offers a holistic account of social dynamics, contradictory colonial legal viewpoints, continuity and change in indigenous customs, the role of law and the court system in bringing about social change. The book presents its key arguments vis-à-vis recent advances in India as well as other Asian and African territories. While it contests the general notion that customary law, rather, the very concept of tribe, is a colonial creation, it also describes the nature of adivasi customs and their self-representation.Printed Pages: 248. 101770

Many Ramayanas: The Diversity of a Narrative Tradition in South Asia
Motilal Banarsidass Publishers Private Limited/Research India Press; New Delhi, India; 2015; 0195635183; Softcover; New;
Throughout the centuries in India, authors and performers have produced diverse tellings of Ramayana in numerous media. Even so, most studies of this epic have concentrated on a single telling : Valmiki's Sanskrit Ramayana. In this volume, distinguished scholars of South Asian literature, religion, and anthropology focus instead on the many Ramayana influential in Indian culture and on the circumstances that have shaped these varied tellings of the Rama story.Together, the essays demonstrate that the Ramayana is multivocal, encompassing tellings of Rama's story that vary with regional literary tradition, social location, gender, religious affiliation, colonial context, intended audience, and genre. Western Realism and International Relations: A Non-Western View
Foundation Books; New Delhi, India; 8175962186; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New;
This book provides an alternative perspective of International Relations from Hiroshima to 9/11, both its diplomacy and mainstream scholarship are linked by realpolitik, in a vicious circle of retrogressive symbiosis. It simultaneously undermined the UN system of collective security from its origin and the scientific credential for its scholarship. The Cold War that it spawned restricted economic prosperity, political stability, and democratic freedom within its narrow core-area of the United States and Europe at the cost of its vast periphery in the Third World. Its unpredicted collapse extended insecurity across the entire globalised system, including its core-are as events since 9/11 forcefully underscores. While the new hegemonic system has become globally more insecure for all its citizens, its scholarship is still clueless about the collapse of the bipolar system it created in the midst of the massive confidence-building exercise to stabilize it; it is even less able to creatively respond to its orderly transition. This book pleads for democracy among the states as a component of justice, as a substitute for power, as the organizing principle of the global system, within a reformed UN system as the ‘centre for harmonizing the actions of humanity’, as envisaged in the Charter. In this task, scholarship must be inspired to be the catalytic agent by reversing its present role as a policy-science of power policies to perpetuate domination and servitude, and legitimizing it as ‘interdependence’ of the ‘global village’. It must liberate itself to become the harbinger of human emancipation, as in other fields of creative scholarship Contents Preface 1 National Security and the International System 2 Emergence of the Post-War Global System of Security 3 Myths and Reality of Realism 4 Western Realism in South Asia 5 Hegemony of Realism 6 Globalisation and the Crisis of Realism 7 Justice as Realism in International Relation Bibliography Index. The Peace Dividend- Progress for India & South-Asia
Roli Books; New Delhi, India; 2004; 8174363181; First Edition; Paperback; New; 9 x 11 Inches
As part of its mission to enhance and encourage the discussion and interaction among world leaders, thus creating international quality platforms aimed at solutions, the Hindustan Times, among India’s most respected newspapers, recently unveiled The Hindustan Times Leadership Initiative. The Initiative’s inaugural conference, ‘The Peace Dividend: Progress for India and South Asia? was held in New Delhi in December 2003. Key political and business leaders, strategists and thinkers—including Atal Bihari Vajpayee, Prime Minister of India, Sonia Gandhi, Congress President, Benazir Bhutto, former Prime Minister of Pakistan, Madeleine Albright, former US Secretary of State and Richard Haass, President, Council on Foreign Relations—met to discuss and map the economic, strategic and geopolitical future of India and South Asia, and suggest ways of solving South Asia’s most trying problems, from Kashmir to a general absence of trust. Here Prime Minister Vajpayee first broached the subject of a South Asia monetary union and a regional security council; Gandhi of a South Asian parliament; and Bhutto of how Pakistan must radically rethink its India policy. The conference set the tone for much that transpired a few weeks later in Islamabad: a historic meeting between Vajpayee and President Pervez Musharraf that initiated a crucial thaw in Indo-Pak relations and encouraged hopes for a progressive and productive future South Asia, home to a quarter of mankind. This volume is a record of history in the making. ‘The peace dividend for South Asia is the creation of new hope and opportunity for its billion and a half people.? Atal Bihari Vajpayee Prime Minister of India ‘We owe it to ourselves and to our people, to all of South Asia, to make every effort to strive, to seek, to pursue peaceful means for the resolution of outstanding disputes.? Benazir Bhutto Former Prime Minister of Pakistan ‘Moderates want to enhance the quality of life. Extremists need violence to give their lives meaning. Moderates are armed with words and reason; extremists with rifles and bombs. It is not a fair fight.? Madeleine K. Tradition and Modernity: Essays on Women of India
D.K. Printworld (P) Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2015; 8192611418; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New; 15 x 23 Cm
The anthology Tradition and Modernity: Essays on Women of India includes essays ranging from the philosophical and analytical to the descriptive and the explorative and the experimental perspectives. It explores the lived experiences and positioning of women in diverse Indian social, religious and cultural contexts. The essays deal with issues varying from the intricacies of the gender concepts embedded in contemporary tradition–modernity debates to detailed consideration of women currents of thought, action and life and the problem of understanding that they throw up.While a majority of the papers rightly reflect on the unequal and oppressive situation of the women in highly patriarchal and hierarchical settings, yet there are quite a few which sensitively touch upon the theme of human spirit and the beauty of love and relationships between man and woman in the midst of caste and gender hierarchies. There is reflection on the theme of the growing awareness about the women, environment and development, particularly the relationship between violence of nature and women.This collection of writings will appeal to readers of all hues as well as students and scholars of culture and religion, in particular of India, gender equality, democracy and difference and feminist theory. Women in the Ràmkathàs
Gyan Books Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2016; 8121213126; Hardcover; New; New;
Women in the Ramakathas attempts to focus on the unfavourable conditions of women in the various renderings of the Rama legends, originating from Valmiki Ramayana. Through 2000 years of Indian literary tradition and folklore, these have been moulded and reshaped, according to the beliefs and understanding of later composers. The basic concept of the role of women remains, however, more-or-less unaltered. Atreyi Biswas evaluates the status of women in the Ramakatha traditions through a historical perspective. No sacrilege or dishonour is intended in criticizing the main character Rama; the focus is exclusively on its socio-historical context, completely leaving aside religious sentiments as commonly reflected in popular literary texts. Biswas analyses the mythological stories relating to Sita's birth, including some of the Ramakathas composed outside the Brahminical-dominant Northern India, consider her to be a child of Ravana; the role of women in marriages; their subjugation, and their 'work' in society; and the exploitation of women as 'workers'. State of Vaccination: The Fight Against Smallpox in Colonial Burma
Orient BlackSwan; New Delhi, India; 2001; 812503546X; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New;
Researched in both London and Burma, State of Vaccination examines how a colonial medical establishment attempted to cope with the neglect that came from being on the periphery of British India. In Burma, local medical officers often doubled up as field officers, laboratory scientists, veterinarians, and teachers to compensate for the weak reach of the colonial state and the chronic shortages of funding and staff. More autonomy was surrendered to local colonial medical officers and the success of the vaccination effort was more vulnerable than in the presidencies to the limitations of transportation, preservation, and legislation, on the one hand, and the challenges of large-scale immigration, local inoculation, and indigenous resistance, on the other. By emphasizing the importance of the colonial medical sub-terrain on the periphery of British India, Atsuko Naono profiles the civil surgeon and his interactions with the local landscape. This book makes an important contribution to our understanding of the history of colonial medicine in Asia. This study begins in the nineteenth century, when Burma came under British rule after three successive wars, and ends with the constitutional separation from India in 1937. Compared to other areas that were a part of British India, Burma rarely figures in studies of colonial health in the British Empire. As a useful countervailing example of medicine under the Raj, incongruities between the colonial medicine practiced on the subcontinent and its periphery Burma are highlighted. Asian Security: The Great Debate
Gyan Books Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 1987; 8121200776; Hardcover; New; New;
Mankind is waging a struggle for survival. It is precisely in these terms that one shall interpret the Attar Chandextension by the Soviet Union of the unilateral moratorium and the fresh Peace initiatives put foreword by the Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev. The fresh Soviet initiatives concerning the vast Asian Pacific Region are an important part of the concept of a comprehensive international security system, which was put forward by the Soviet Union earlier. It is necessary to resolve a number of vital problems for peaceful cooperation of states, for military, and consequently for Political détente in the Asian-Pacific region. The Soviet Union proposes that a Search be conducted for the Settlement of regional problems, and a reliable barrier by put up in the way of proliferation and build-up of Nuclear weapons there, that talks be started on a Reduction of the activity of the navies (in the first place of ships equipped with nuclear munitions), that the discussion of confidence building Measures and non-use of force be placed on a practical footing. To improve the situation in the region, it is necessary in the first place to ensure a cut in the nuclear potentials of the states situated in it, resolve the problem of local conflicts. A great role in that could be played by outlining new forms of economic cooperation and the Adoption of a code sealing the principles of conduct of the Countries belonging to it, so as to ensure their security.Printed Pages: 306. 105663

Poverty and Under Development: New Challenge; A Global Survey
Gyan Books Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 1987; 8121201489; Hardcover; New; New;
Poverty and underdevelopment is of utmost Importance as far the subject is concerned. In the past few years, there have been tremendous discussions on the mass poverty and underdevelopment problems and what should be done about them. Poverty and underdevelopment have most crucial problems, not only for some but for all nations. We in India believe that our poverty, the abysmal poverty of Asia, is a Product of the 19th century colonialization. A huge amount of resources went out of this part of Asia in the last century and helped to Finance the Industrial Revolution in the North World. Asia thus exported Wealth to West European Nations in the last century, and imported poverty in turn. Poverty is not only always with us but everywhere with us. It is an inter-related condition of deprivation. Eradication of poverty can ultimately be achieved by economic development and more equal distribution of income. However, there is no other method of relieving poverty immediately except by a net transfer of Income from the rich Classes to the poorer people. We must remember that our most precious resources are our human resources. The author has proposed a new GNP. Instead of Gross National Product, with its materialistic implications, author suggests that we all establish as our goal the development of a new GNP-that is each government should try to make its Country a Genuine Nesting-place of Prosperity.Printed Pages: 526. 105676

Being Mortal: Medicine and What Matters in the End
Penguin Books India Pvt. Ltd.; Delhi, India; 2014; 0670086061; Hardcover; New; New;
Doctors are trained to keep their patients alive as long as possible. But they are never taught how to prepare people to die. And yet for many patients, particularly the old and terminally ill, death is a question of when, not if. Should the medical profession rethink its approach to them? And in what way? With aging populations and hospital costs rising globally, these questions have become increasingly relevant. In his new book, Atul Gawande argues that an acceptance of mortality must lie at the center of the way we treat the dying. Using his experiences (and missteps) as a surgeon, comparing attitudes towards aging and death in the West and in India and drawing a powerful portrait of his father’s final years-a doctor who chose how he should go – Gawande has produced a work that is not only an extraordinary account of loss but one whose ideas are truly important. Questioning, profound and deeply moving, Being Mortal is a masterpiece.Printed Pages: 288. 103392

The Success of India's Democracy
Cambridge University Press; New Delhi, India; 8175961074; First Edition; Paperback; New;
How has democracy taken root in India in the face of a low-income economy, widespread poverty, illiteracy, and immense ethnic diversity? Atul Kohli brings together some of the worlds leading scholars of Indian politics to consider this intriguing anomaly. They do so by focusing not so much on socioeconomic factors, but rather on the ways in which power is distributed in India. Two processes have guided the negotiation of power conflicts. First, a delicate balance has been struck between the forces of centralization and decentralization and, second, the interests of the powerful in society have been served without fully excluding those on the margins. These and related themes are addressed by the editor in his introduction, which is followed by an essay on the historical origins of Indian democracy, and two further sections, one on the consolidation of democratic institutions, and the other on the forces which motivate or inhibit democratic growth. While the book offers a clear and coherent approach to the subject, individual authors have their particular take on the subject. It is this combination that will entice a wide variety of readers, from students on the one hand, as a guide to one of the worlds largest democracies, to scholars on the other, who are looking for a new approach to this controversial and much-debated subject. Now it struggles to develop, improve and clean up its systems in order to maximise its potential. Through first-hand accounts, this work attempts to describe how India handled the trauma of Partition and progressed further with radical changes in its socio-economic and political order. Hidden Identity of Women in Church and Society: A Re-reading of the Book of Esther
Christian World Imprints/B.R. Publishing Corporation; New Delhi, India; 2016; 9789351481478; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New;
This book meticulously addresses the issue of ‘Feminist/Womanist Identities’ & ’Biblical Hermeneutics’; and their mutual impact on each other. It serves as a humble attempt to understand the story of the Vashti and Esther in the Book of Esther, without any ‘patriarchal’ bias; to bring forward the true identity of Vashti and Esther; and to seek in depth the contribution of women in terms of the various roles they played in the society of their own times; and subsequently, to examine how these reinterpretations will enable a broader understanding of women in the society today. Culture of Encounters: Sanskrit at the Mughal Court
Allen Lane/Penguin Books; New Delhi, India; 0670088943; Hardcover; New; New;
Told by the authority on the subject, Culture of Encounters gives us insight into how and why the Mughals?one of the most powerful imperial powers?poured immense energy into drawing Sanskrit thinkers to their courts, adopted and adapted Sanskrit-based practices, translated dozens of Sanskrit texts into Persian, and composed Persian accounts of Indian philosophy. Beginning with the invitation of Brahman and Jain intellectuals to King Akbar's court, this incisive work details the numerous, Mughal-backed texts they produced under emperors Akbar, Jahangir, and Shah Jahan. These cross-cultural encounters created a dynamic idea of Mughal rule essential to the empire's survival. Many works, including Sanskrit epics and historical texts, were translated into Persian, elevating the political position of Brahmans and Jains and cultivating a voracious appetite for Indian writings throughout the Mughal world. The first book to read these Sanskrit and Persian works in tandem, Culture of Encounters recasts the Mughal Empire as a multi-lingual state that collaborated with its Indian subjects to establish its role as an Indian empire. Revisiting a forgotten part of India?s history, Audrey Truschke certifies the critical role of the sociology of empire in building the Mughal polity, which came to shape the literary and ruling cultures of early modern India forever.
