Christian Theological Responses: Contemporary Contextual Concerns (Christian Heritage Rediscovered: 3)
Christian World Imprints/B.R. Publishing Corporation; New Delhi, India; 2014; 8192512193; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New;
The Book provides a systematic study to understand social issues from a Christian point of view. It showcases various social concerns vis-a-vis Christian responsibilities towards them so as to prepare people to face the new challenges.To elaborate, the presentation offers research papers and articles in relation to `Subaltern Movements' and `Uniqueness of Dalits Folk Religion', among others. It also exhibits pluralistic context of India and suggest ways and means of Christian inclusive pluralistic spirituality so as to promote harmonious social relations. Also, an important aspect of human life, `disability' or being differently able - physically or mentally - has been focused, which perhaps either has been ignored or neglected so far; but Author feels that it is required as a part of theological exercises in developing "an enabling theology for disability". The focal point of Christian ecclesiological concerns since 1910, i.e., `Ecumenism' has also been covered. The Author attempts to seek ways for more "inclusive ecumenism" by shifting the goal from `unity among Christians' to `unity of all human beings' irrespective of their religion, faith, sect, denomination and caste. One of the major social concerns of `Gender Discrimination' has also been highlighted. Author also puts in an analytical attempt to understand the impact of `Globalization' on world's economic, social, and cultural life. In addition, the Book provides an in depth detail of issues that are causing ecological and environmental crisis; ethical and medical crisis in the form of `HIV/AIDS'.Thus, it fulfills the concern of Christian community by understanding the contemporary contextual issues and help building a healthier society. The Author attempts simultaneously to provide it as a text-book to theological trainees from multi-disciplinary perspective.Printed Pages: 200. 106419

The Sahityakantakoddhara
Motilal Banarsidass Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 1980; 8120827791; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New;
The Sahityakantakoddhara is expository in nature, but belongs to the field of "Grammar as an Applied Science". It is similar to the section on sabdasuddhi in Kavyalamkarasutravrtti of Vamana. The 6th chapter in Bhamaha's Kavyalamkara, the Prayogikadhikarana of Vamana, and Durghatavrtti are only a few works that have a systematic treatment pointing out the correctness or otherwise of some of the usages of Poets in Sanskrit. Compared to the bulk of works dealing with other literary aspects, the works on sabdasuddhi are very few.Printed Pages: 70. 102605

Pali-English Dictionary
Motilal Banarsidass Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2015; 8120811445; Fourth Edition; Hardcover; New; New;
The merits and demerits of the work will be sufficiently plain even from the first fasciculus. But one or two remarks are necessary to make the position of my colleague and myself clear. We have given throughout the Sanskrit roots corresponding to the Pali roots, and have omitted the latter. It may be objected that this is a strange method to use in a Pali dictionary, especially as the vernacular on which Pali is based had never passed through the stage of Sanskrit. That may be so; and it may not be possible, historically, that any Pali word in the canon could have been actually derived from the corresponding Sanskrit word. Nevertheless the Sanskrit form, though arisen quite independently, may throw light upon the Pali form; and as Pali roots have not yet been adequately studied in Europe, the plan adopted will probably, at least for the present, be more useful. Still, the work is essentially preliminary. There is a large number of words of which we do not know the derivation. There is a still larger number of which the derivation does not give the meaning, but rather the reverse. It is so in every living language. Who could guess, from the derivation, the complicated meaning of such words as ěconscienceî, ěemotionî, ědispositionî? The derivation would be as likely to mislead as to guide. We have made much progress since then. As the Pali Text Society began issuing editons and translations of the Pali Canon and Commentaries in quick succession, Rhys Davids conceived the idea of the compilation of an exhaustive dictionary of Pali, based on the voluminous basic material that was being brought to light. the work took more than twenty years of devoted labour but before his death in 1922, Rhys Davids had the satisfaction of seeing its first volume published. In four volumes issued over 1921-25 the Dictionary contains every Pali word with its sanskrit root identified and meanings given in english. Carrying over 1,50,000 textual references, the work holds the field, even today, as the best Pali-English Dictionary.Printed Pages: 753. 102579

Copper-Plate Inscriptions: Belonging to the Sri Sankaracharya of the Kamakoti-Pitha
Gyan Books Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 1986; 8121200652; Hardcover; New; New;
An authetic work that contains the Epigraphical records, preserved in the Kamakotipeetha, which provides authoritative information about the origin and development of the Monastery as well as the Religious inclinations of the kings of Tanjore and Vijayanagar.Sankaracarya, the chief exponent of Advaita philosophy, developed the unique monastic orders of the Dasanamis, ten Classes of the Vedantic sannyasins. For the Purpose of management and organization, he established, as is known from the traditional lores, four Mathas, i.e. monasteries: Sarada Math at Dwarka, Sringeri Math at Karnataka, Govardhana Math at Puri and Joshi Math at Badrinath. Having Sringeri at the lead, they played the key role in Hindu monastricism and religious orders. Apart from these four, some other monateries also came into existence; Kamakotipeeth at Kumbhaghonam is the foremost among them. This Math also has made great contribution in the furtherance of the Advaita Philosophy and claims an equal status with the Srinageri Math. The present work contains the epigraphical records, preserved in the Kama-Kotipeeth, which provide authoritative informations about the origin and development of the Math as well as the religious inclinations of the then kings of Tanjore and Vujayanagara. It comprises the edited texts, with English, translation, of the 15th-17th centuries copper-plate inscriptions belonging to the reigns of Vijaya gopaladeva, Vira Narasimhadeva, Krishnadevaraya, etc. and of the Karnata Dynasty of Vijavanagara, Vijaya Raghunatha Tondainar of Pudukkottai, vijayanagar Chokkanatha Nayanayyavaru, etc. the work also contains a firman of one of the late Mughal Emperors of Delhi and records from the contemporary Portuguese accounts, both of which are of great historical importance.Printed Pages: 136. 105629

The Meitheis
Low Price Publications/D.K. Publishers Distributors Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2015; 8175364300; Softcover; New;
The valley of Manipur in several respects resemble in miniature of India. In both the civilized people who occupy the central region of the State settled and organised the area are nearly akin to the wild folk who inhabit the hills which enclose the alluvial plain. But while its neighbour, Burma has accepted the mild and gentle religion of Buddha, and thus profoundly modified the original animistic cult, Manipur has been taken into the pale of Hinduism, and has imposed upon itself burdensome restrictions of caste and ritual from which Burma is happily free. Since the advent of orthodox Hinduism, the Meitheis, dominant race of Manipur are claiming descent from Arjuna, one of the Pandavas.Manipur was once a princely State and later became one of the 26 States of the Union of India. It remains economically backward and politically unstable due to lack of political maturity and poor relationship between the hills and the valleys. Manipur remains an unknown area to most Indians and one reason for this may well be the absence of good books about the people and problems of Manipur. This book has filled the void. Winning India's Next War: The Role of Aerospace Power
KW Publishers; New Delhi, India; 2008; 8187966742; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New;
Within a century from its inception, air power (and now increasingly aerospace power) has acquired a dominant role in the foreign policy of nations in wars and use of force not necessarily leading to war. In spite of some enthusiasts claiming otherwise, aerospace power can-not win a war by itself; but it is also true that no modern war can be won without it. Wars that we are likely to be faced with would be limited in nature, whether they are sub-conventional (employing irregular strategies like terrorism, etc.), or conventional. Aerospace power would remain the core of credible nuclear deterrence for defence. Aerospace power would tilt the balance even more effectively in limited wars than it does in full-scale classical wars. It is in this context that the author has examined the role of aerospace power in winning our wars in the future.Printed Pages: 282. 104447

Penguin Books India Pvt. Ltd.; Delhi, India; 2014; 0143421085; Softcover; New;
Only too often, we falter when it comes to completing a task properly and on time. They genuinely believe in delivering a great customer experience, the thinking that accompanies this belief makes all the difference.The last ten per cent shows us how to go that extra mile.Printed Pages: 240. 103409

The WTO: A Discordant Orchestra
Sage Publications; New Delhi, India; 2006; 0761935053; First Edition; Paperback; New;
Potentially one of the most powerful of all multilateral institutions in terms of ensuring smooth and free trade flows globally, the World Trade Organisation (WTO) is also one of the most controversial. Its achievements notwithstanding, what significantly plagues the WTO are the conflicting objectives of its constituent members which act as a deterrent to progress. Therefore, it is time to conduct a stock-taking exercise and review the developments in the WTO since its establishment. This book takes stock of the WTO and reviews its functioning since its establishment in 1995. It narrates the story of the WTO with a view to finding a solution to the unproductive conflicts hampering its functioning. The author ably captures the tensions within the WTO as also the developments which have given rise to these complex conflicts. While the author maintains that the biggest challenge facing the WTO is the North-South discord, he also highlights the frequent emergence of South-South and North-North conflicts. The book presents a chronological description of developments within the WTO (till the most recent ministerial round at Hong Kong in December 2005) which have been shaped by the tug-of-war between various interest groups. The book concludes by summing up the key issues and stresses that need to be addressed and resolved in order to ensure effective multilateralism and a stronger WTO regime. Printed Pages: 252. 028566

Old China's New Economy: The Conquest by a Billion Paupers
Sage Publications; New Delhi, India; 2009; 8178298627; First Edition; Paperback; New;
A new China was born in 1949. After thousands of years of feudalism, in six decades the economy has undergone a change from Mao (read socialist economy) to market (socialist market economy). Old China's New Economy: The Conquest of a Billion Paupers, presents a comprehensive analysis of the rise and growth of the Chinese economy since the beginning of the country's transition to a socialist market economy, highlighting the critical role of two major change agents - the government and the people. While the credit goes to the former for successful transition to a high growth economy, there is an equally important role played by the latter, the Chinese people, as displayed in their hard work, tenacity and struggle for a better standard of living. The book analyses the key drivers of high growth, delves into the much debated and discussed issue of sustainability and the numerous challenges that high growth has thrown up for the people and the government. The book also argues that China is likely to see its high growth continuing for many years to come, as it has already secured a strategic position in the global economy. Printed Pages: 328. 028136

Horse in Early Indian Art
Munshiram Manoharlal Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 1987; 812150046X; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New; 29 x 23 Cm
Horse has been one of the noblest animals whose use came quite handy to man at very early age. For its nobility, energy and power horse was very soon universally acknowledged for the progress of human civilization. In its tremendous energy and power, man discovered something unusual and something divine and as such all over the ancient world some sort of divine flavour came to be attached to it by countries evolving different civilizations. The usefulness of this animal was also felt by our ancestors who attributed it to a high position and allowed the same to be symbolic theriomorphically of some of their very important gods and goddesses. Religious recognition which the horse received from the early Indians had also inspired Indian artists to compose meaningful and fascinating themes in stone, terracotta and in colour with horse as the pivotal character. Only a few books and articles have so far been written on animals in Indian art and in each case the studies have been very summarily undertaken. The present work for the first time studies exhaustively a single animal viz., the horse. Various aspects of horse including its history, its place and position in Indian mythology and its depictions in early Indian art have been dealt with utter devotion and affectionate sympathy. Agricultural Growth and Non-Agricultural Growth: Dynamics of National Development
Gyan Books Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 1989; 8121202728; Hardcover; New; New;
The work is a distinguished contribution to the literature of growth and development. It seeks to synchronise the micro and macro approaches towards understanding the development process in Agricultural and non-agricultural sectors of the economy. The inter-relationship and interaction among different sectors have been highlighted in individual as well as aggregate perspectives, through inter-sectoral linkages, inter-industry dependence, international trade and Environmental sustenance and balance. As the Author avers the Balance between Agriculture and industry has to be global and equitable in its operations but also within the national boundaries. Development must outgrow the short-term perspectives and personal and group selfish interests to cover the broader field and harmonise the personal and the social interests. It must deal with the quality of life rather than merely with material goods and needs. These and a host of other intricate and intriguing issues have been thoroughly and authoritatively dealt within this commendable Exploring work.Printed Pages: 168. 105709

Knowledge and Society: Situating Sociology and Social Anthropology
Oxford University Press; New Delhi, India; 2007; 0195687752; First Edition; Hard Cover; New; New;
This collection of essays by T.K. Oommen emphasizes the importance of contextualization in the production and dissemination of knowledge, and discusses the controversy regarding data collection techniques among sociologists and social anthropologists. It argues that there is an organic relationship between the nature of the themes studied and the methods invoked; the nature and characteristics of the universe studied and the methods employed; and that no method is inherently superior or inferior but they are contextually relevant or irrelevant. When the two cognate disciplines of sociology and social anthropology emerged to meet the needs and aspirations of Europe, the former investigated European societies and the latter studied those societies Europe colonized. What changes occurred to these western transplants outside Europe, particularly in India, is a principal concern of this volume. Divided into two parts, the first looks into problems faced in adapting western concepts, theories, methods, and techniques of research to the Indian situation. Abandoning both universalization and indigenization, the book opts for contextualization to meet the specific challenges in apprehending social reality in India. The second part deals with the different avatars of sociology and social anthropology during colonialism, cold war, and the current global age. The implications of internationalization of sociology and 'sociology for one world' are examined. The shifting frontiers of the two disciplines between the Old Worlds of Europe, Asia, and Africa and the New World 'Americas and Australia' are identified and their implications analysed. 021301

Crisis and Contention in Indian Society
Sage Publications; New Delhi, India; 2005; 076193359X; First Edition; Paperback; New;
This book analyses those contentious issues currently confronting India's society and polity and which are threatening to assume crisis proportions if not tackled properly. Its central thrust is to problematize the societal dimensions that shape these issues and cause crises, and suggests solutions to these difficult problems. The author identifies seven 'internal threats' which are in opposition to the democratic ethos. These are: " Secessionist movements that question the legitimacy of the Indian state; " Irredentist movements that do not accept the artificial vivisection of tribal or linguistic communities across different states; " Inadequate autonomy conceded to the states by the central government; " Threats faced by inhabitants in certain regions where a disproportionate number of immigrants tend to dominate them; " Threats posed by Hindu fundamentalists to minority religious communities labelled as cultural aliens; " Discrimination against traditionally oppressed castes; " Elite hegemony and patriarchal hegemony which between them subordinate women and the less well off. The author maintains that these threats can be contained by providing appropriate political and cultural autonomy within the federal framework. He advocates the endorsement of a set of democratic values that incorporates a shared vision of the nation and its polity and society. Printed Pages: 256. 028126

Hidden Treasures of Yoga

In this book, it has been my endeavours to set out in simple language, A Few processes of yogic development, which have not so far been available to the readers of Book on Yoga. I have described in some detail the fundamental concepts on which the practice is based. The subject being one of universal interest, entirely free from religious and geographical limitations. ! have freely quoted the parallel experiences of western adepts and scientists. I have adhered as far as possible closely to the literal wording of the various texts on the subject, even to the extent of allowing the language to appear "queer" in places. I have given a fairly full list of the various publications to which 1 have made reference. I hope this will assist my readers in their further studies of the subject.Printed Pages: 220. 104042

Blissful Experience Bhakti: Quintessence of Indian Philosophy
D.K. Printworld (P) Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2012; 8124606145; First Edition; Softcover; New; 15 x 23 Cm
Bhakti-yoga is seen as the direct path to perfection that leads to the very heart of religious consciousness. Ramanuja's concept of bhakti (devotion) emphasised the practice of self-surrender through which a person realises his personality, strengths and weaknesses, and hidden powers. Bhakti, for him, acts as a link between mortals and the Ultimate Reality. This book examines the views of Vishishtadvaita of Ramanuja on bhakti and prapatti (self-surrender). It studies in-depth the meaning of God, the soul and the Supreme Soul, and the world; the concept of bhakti; the different stages of bhakti referring to numerous sources that include the Vedas, the Bhagavad-Gita, the Upanishads and the Puranas. It focuses on Ramanuja's teaching of bhakti, examining his philosophy in general and his sevenfold practice, Sadhana Saptaka to generate bhakti that expounds the qualities and significance of discrimination for viveka, freedom from sensual attachment or anger for securing vimoka, repeated reflection of God, performance of religious duty for inner mental strength, development of ethical virtues, freedom from despair and freedom from excessive joy. It understands the relevance of symbols in devotion and examines nature and use of symbols in Buddhism and Hinduism. The scholarly study discusses the importance and cultivation of peaceful emotions, and need for prayer and dietary regulations in devotion. The volume will prove an indispensable work for scholars of Indian philosophy and religious studies. Printed Pages: 360 with 10 b/w illustrations. 100406

From Devotion to Total Surrender Saranagati Yoga: In the Light of Indian Philosophy
D.K. Printworld (P) Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2013; 8124606374; First Edition; Softcover; New; 15 x 22 Cm
The volume is a comprehensive work on bhakti yoga or bhakti marga, seen as the direct path to perfection, the principal means to the progressive perfection of the soul. The book begins with a detailed study of the origin of bhakti in the Vedas and its understanding in the Brahmanas, Aranyakas, the Upanishads and the Puranas, and other works. It attempts to approach bhakti as a representation of God in the created world and devotion without religious convictions. It throws light on man's need to develop such devotion through absolute self-surrender to God. The bhakti concept in Vedanta is explored in-depth by referring to Vedanta schools of Adi Shankara, Bhaskara Bhatta, Ramanuja, Caitanya Mahaprabhu, the Alvar Saints of south India and the concept of devotion of Andal. Quoting from the thoughts of diverse bhakti saints of India, it explores the bhakti devotion in Shaivism referring to Shiva as the Supreme God and the concept of Shakti, aspects relating to moral responsibilities, bondage and liberation, and the doctrine of Shatstha. The emphasis is on Ramanuja’s teachings on bhakti: his understanding of the Absolute, jnana and consciousness, jiva and atma, time and spiritual consciousness. There is a chapter that provides a practical approach to bhakti thought, for instance, ways of developing consciousness of it and non-meditative forms of bhakti.Printed Pages: 375 with 2 b/w illustrations. 100410

Way to Liberation Moksa-Marga: An Itinerary in Indian Philosophy
D.K. Printworld (P) Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2011; 8124605998; First Edition; Softcover; New; 15 x 23 Cm
The way to liberation or moksha needs perfect knowledge, perfect action and perfect surrender to the Lord. The bhakta becomes a bhagavata as he not only knows and sees but also lives as a servant of God. Moksha is the final approach to the purity and perfection of the human soul. This volume attempts an in-depth study of the concept of liberation or moksha and the way to attain it. The book begins with the meaning of love, devotion, religion, the body-soul relation and the three yogas, an understanding of which is essential to understand the concept of moksha. In this context, it delves into the meaning of the Brahman, the Absolute, as conveyed in the Vedas and other religious works like the Upanishads and the Bhagavad-Gita, the concept of the universal spiritual entity of Sarveshvara, concepts of sin and virtue, and even the principles of monotheism and polytheism in Hinduism. Quoting from the scriptures and other relevant texts, it emphasises on the notion of devotion and its benefits to examine the means to self-realisation and liberation and includes a study of the concept of contemplation and meditation, including meditation techniques and practices, which is central to the attainment of moksha. With interesting illustrations, the volume will be useful to religious scholars and students and seekers on the path of spiritual fulfilment.Printed Pages: 322. 100431

Glorious Indian Diamonds
D.K. Printworld (P) Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2015; 8124607362; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New; 15 x 23 Cm
India, for many millennia, was the diamond capital of the world and controlled the global diamond business. Indians were the first to discover, mine, curate and market diamonds in the world, and were the first to discover that diamond can be cut only by diamond, and can be polished with its own powder. Vedas, Upanishads and epics stand testimony to it. Diamonds were the quintessential luxury of the Indian royalty. Kohinoor, (Mountain of Light), Hope, Great Moghul, Orloff, Sansi, Hastings, Pigott and Akbar Shah-Jahangir Shah had unparalleled place in the annals of Indian and world history. Till the seventeenth century, the Golconda Fort City in south India was the World Trade Centre of diamonds and was a dream destination for "who is who" in the diamond business. Though at present, diamond business is about $ 72 billion plus worldwide, India has very little to offer to this market size. New nations/countries are on the block and India has become a trivial entity in diamond production from the colonial period due to the monopolistic policy pursued by the British in favour of the new discoveries made in South Africa, and the socialistic policies of Independent India. Even the environmental concerns stood as stumbling blocks against the growth of Indian diamond mining industry. The present study explores exhaustive data, based on a decade-long serious research, targeting common man. It brilliantly attempts to make one aware about the birth, history, glory, places of concentration, applications of diamond and about the present Indian diamond cutting and polishing industry. The book also introduces the readers into the reality of imitations, artificial diamonds, and discusses such products in detail. It delves deep into the identification and valuation techniques of diamond, and the tools used for the same. Efforts are also made to present many a superstition associated with diamonds, and to brief those diamonds that have some bearing on history. After decades of Independence, India has failed to regain its lost splendour and leadership position. There is a need to bring changes in its approach to this industry to put it back on track and compete with the present world leaders. The author has given special attention to analyse the present diamond scenario in India and suggests remedies. Printed Pages: 372. 100317

Top Tips in Aneasthesia
Cambridge University Press; New Delhi, India; 2005; 1841101710; First Edition; Paperback; Brand New; 186 x 123 Mm
What we have sought in this collection of ‘Top Tips’ (how to do it) and ‘Caveats’ (how not to do it) is to compile the Pearls of Wisdom that have been passed down from colleagues all around the world. These are the small details of practice which we have come to rely on when the going gets tough. Most of them are too obscure or even downright strange to make the main stream text books. Many are not ‘evidence based’. We are not seeking to rival the Cochrane database but do believe that, worthy as the scholarly collection may be, there is still a place in medicine for skill, artistry and individualism. We are merely trying to spread the word slightly further and perhaps add another string to a few bows, for those times when the available options seem a little limited. Printed Pages: 80. 018550
