Political Theory and Power (2nd Edition)
Foundation Books; New Delhi, India; 8175962038; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New;
This book draws attention to certain significant changes in the way in which power has been defined and it also examines some of the critical responses which those changes have evoked. The objective is not to try and evolve a universally acceptable and comprehensive definition of power, and of realted terms like authority and influence. The argument of the book is that, that would be an impossible project since social and political theories themselves constitute an intervention into political discourse of a society and they may implicitly or explicitly embody a political perspective. Aging and the Indian Diaspora: Cosmopolitan Families in India and Abroad
Orient BlackSwan; New Delhi, India; 2012; 8125045147; Hardcover; New; New;
The proliferation of old age homes and increasing numbers of elderly living alone are remarkable new phenomena in India. These trends are related to extensive overseas migration, the transnational dispersal of families amidst global labor markets and the rise of a new Indian middle class. Sarah Lamb's moving and insightful account—based on nearly fifteen years of fieldwork in India and the United States, with a focus on Kolkata—takes us inside India’s emerging old age homes and into the households of elders living alone in India and with US-settled children abroad. Lamb also investigates recent state efforts to legally mandate parental care in India, and scrutinizes the ways senior Indian Americans make use of and critically reflect upon forms of state-supported elder care prevalent in the United States.Aging and the Indian Diaspora provides an engrossing and vivid portrayal of the innovative and ambivalent ways older Indians and their communities are reworking aging as they confront—both embracing and challenging—processes they associate with modern, Western and global living. Lamb's study probes debates and cultural assumptions in both India and the United States regarding how best to age; the proper social-moral relationship among individuals, genders, families, the market, and the state; and ways of finding meaning in the human life course. In Search of Yamuna: Reflection on a River Lost
Times Group Books; New Delhi, India; 2011; 9789380828091; First Edition; Softcover; New;
The crisis of river Yamuna is pronounced by a deep sense of loss afflicting the lives of riverfront people who were crucial in shaping the river's many rhythms and cultures. In the present mood of transience and conflict, amidst the emerging riverfront politics, these communities seem to be caught in the eye of the storm. This book makes an effort to encapsulate this present conflict. Deconstructing the nature of claims and stakes that riverine communities have on the riverbanks today, it is an attempt to describe the current processes of marginalisation of certain groups, and disengagement with nature for the sake of 'development'. The author makes an attempt to capture this current reality of India by discussing it in the framework of one of its holiest rivers trapped in a modern city. It aims to respond to a mood of confusion about what Delhi symbolizes today and what the Yamuna has come to mean to this modern, yet historic city. Tracing the river from Yamunotri to Allahabad, the book delves into her cultural essence and the various meanings she symbolizes across time and space. The Yamuna comes out as a versatile fluid, a cultural mosaic and an emotional power that comprises infinite realities. The book describes the multiple ways in which communities have engaged with the river—religion and mythology, livelihood, recreation, and now, technology and economics. It discusses the ideologies behind these different notions of the Yamuna and how these conceptions have come in conflict with each other and are now leading to contests over her terrains. The crisis of riverfront communities in Delhi is meticulously illustrated. Alongside, a debate on ecological democracy is unfurled with the lingering question of 'how does one engage with nature today?' Shedding new light on controversies that envelop the river today, this book is a sharp critique of the way the Indian government and economy have dealt with this situation in particular and the larger case of the environment and communities in general. While rooted in current and tangible realities, the narrative transcends that element and engages in a form of philosophical rumination. A personalised narrative with many poetic musings, it is an academic discussion laid out in a lyrical format.Printed Pages: 290. 104687

A Critical Study of Hinduism
Munshiram Manoharlal Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 1998; 8121508215; Third Revised and Enlarged Edition; Hardbound; New; New; 14 Cms x 22 Cms
Hinduism is not a revealed religion like Christianity or Islam. There was no First Prophet. It is a loosely knit pattern of ideological faith having its roots in dharma and satya. It is a sociological and ethical pattern of life that goes by the name of Hinduism. Through centuries, it has undergone a variety of changes. In ancient India, fundamental truths were taught with the help of myths and fables. As time passed, the truths were forgotten, myths and fables remained. Many a reformer has tried to restore Hinduism to its pristine glory, but the outcome, for all practical purposes, has been very short-lived. It has not reached the common masses and, therefore, has not left any imprint on their faith. The ingrained habit of the philosopher in India to consider and identify his philosophic goals with those of the religious ideals has led the common man to shun any religious thinking on the ground that it is beyond his reach. The common man has so far found satisfaction in confronting to the externalities of the religion. In A Critical Study of Hinduism, the author has made a critical study of the externalities of the religion as they exist today. It is a kind of development study of what is euphemistically known as Hindu religion, from its beginnings to its modern state. In this book, a viable definition of Hinduism is sought, and allied matters are dealt with in a general manner. In that context, the author discusses the natural religion of the Vedic people and the sophisticated Upanisadic ideas of the later days. This is followed by a systematic exposition of the theistic trends during the past centuries. She has also analysed the extent of the influence of the epics on the theistic strains in the early Indian thought. While evolving an ideal pattern of ethical tenets in the contemporary situation, she has evaluated the contribution of some important reformers and made a lucid study of the significance of their lives and works in the twentieth century. That a change in outlook is essential, the author concludes, cannot be denied. Till such time as when we can reform our own people and draw them to appreciate the truths and ideals of our religion, the author feels, we have no right to think of changing the people of other countries and of other religions. Bhuiyas, numbering around two million, are the aboriginal tribes of Central Hill Belt of India. These primitive Pauri or Hill Bhuiyas of Keonjhar, Bonai and Pal Lehera states, and the Hinduized Bhuiyas of Himgir and Nagra of Gangpur State of Orissa in British India are the subject of this study, delineating their various stages of cultural development over a period of time. These Bhuiyas are comparatively more primitive in their customs and manners than the other sections of the tribe. But their contacts with the Hindu society and its culture have to a minimal extent modified their primitive culture. With the advent of cultural growth, some sections of these Bhuiyas have given up their honorific titles and adopted some Hinduized titles, to elevate themselves in the social hierarchy. This book, a gold mine of socio-anthropological studies, offers much-needed details about the Pauri Bhuiyas’ affinities and population, habitat, physical and mental characteristics, economic life, social and kinship organizations, and customs of birth, childhood, puberty, marriage, inheritance and death. This volume also delves deep into their folklore, religious faith, superstitions and magic practices. A significant work of economic developments of a backward district on a former princely state. Various factors bearing on the Economics development, such as Political and administrative conditions, education, health, tribal and Urban development have highlighted by the author. With a total area of 82,700 sq. miles and a Population of 181/2 millions, Hyderabad formed one of the premier Native States of pre-Independent India. Of the four Subas or Revenue Divisions into which it was divided administratively, Warangal was one Forest and tribal Infested, and predominantly Telugu-speaking Districts of Warangal, Karimnagar and Adilabad. This was very much in the forefront in responding to the political, social and economic awakening and activity of the times. This work which is very much pioneering in its nature, and fully covers the comprehensive, significant and varied economic developments that donned the reign of the last and VII Nizan, Mir Osman Ali Khan, has, for the first time, fully explored and brought to light the Wealth of information that was contained in more than 10,000 Warangal Subedari Files of H.E.H. the Nizam's Government Departments of Agriculture, Finance, Revenue, Supply, Industries, Rural Reconstruction and Social Welfare. The economic resources of the Region vis-Ã -vis the actual development that has been achieved over the period under study, the reasons for the much below average performance in all the key sectors and the resultant situation that has ultimately emerged, have all been examined at macro as well as micro level. Strange Meeting and Other Stories
Vision Books/Orient Paperbacks; New Delhi, India; 8170946522; Softcover; New;
OLD AND NEW, here is a selection from Saros Cowasjee’s short fiction written over the years. It includes his very first short story, ‘My Shikari’s Wife’, which touches the heart with its tenderness, and his most recent, ‘The Dog Who Died’, about an animal’s sacrifice which recalls that of the Saviour. In between these two are other unforgettable stories: ‘His Father’s Medals’, a poignant reminder of the world of the untouchables; ‘Another Train to Pakistan’, about people who find themselves homeless through absence of roots and loyalties; and ‘The Sentry’, in which two brothers meet in the jungles of Burma as enemies belonging to different camps.Cowasjee is a cosmopolitan who is equally at home in London and Dublin as he is in Agra or Regina. His ‘Sunday on a Soapbox’ is a delightful portrayal of speakers who frequent Hyde Park Corner, while his Dublin pieces show how much of the Irish he has absorbed into himself. But at heart he is Indian, as the chance encounter with another Indian reveals in ‘Strange Meeting’, among the most memorable of his stories.Printed Pages: 152. 106637

100 Poems by Faiz Ahmed Faiz
Abhinav Publications/Kaveri Books; New Delhi, India; 817017399X; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New;
"Faiz Ahmed Faiz (1911-1984) was one of the leading, if not the foremost, poet of the Indian subcontinent during the greater part of the last century. Listed four times for the Nobel Prize of Poetry, he was often compared to his friend Pablo Neruda, revolutionary poet and Nobel prize winner, of Chile. Of Faiz's multifaceted personality, which led him to become, amongst other things, an activist for human rights and liberties, a famous journalist and editor of liter. ary magazines (Urdu & others), trade unionist, and film songwriter, it is his poetry which will, no doubt, best survive the test of time. His very firit volume of poetry, published in 1941 from Lucknow, brought him instant celebrity. ""Naqsh- e-Faryadi"" or ""Imprints"" has since haunted more than one generation of Urdu lovers. Its combi- nation of classical and elegant Indo-Persian dic- tion with modern sentiment and sensibility still touches the heart of the reader. Apart from inventing the modern Urdu love poem, Faiz revolutionised the classical form of Urdu poetry, the Ghazal, giving it a powerful socio-political resonance. He used ancient forms of poetry, such as the Qawwali and the Geet, to convey his message of humanism without reference to caste, colour or creed. He suffered prison and exile for this in his homeland of Pakistan, where he was, for long years, denied access to the media. The musicality of his verse has continued to haunt many a younger poet, even though it is difficult to attain his unforgettable summits. 107893

Imperialists, Nationalists, Democrats: The Collected Essays
Orient BlackSwan/Permanent Black; New Delhi, India; 2014; 8178243873; Softcover; New;
The present book gathers together thirty pieces from scattered and relatively inaccessible sources. It is remarkable equally for the quality of the writing within it, reminiscent of the virtues that made Gopal’s reputation. ‘The English prose of most Indian academics is wooden’, say Ramachandra Guha and Sunil Khilnani in their preface to this collection. ‘Gopal, who had immersed himself in the literature of the language, was by contrast a stylist with a wry turn of phrase. Though his mother tongue was Telugu and he spoke Tamil fairly well—as well as an Oxford-educated Brahmin could—he wrote almost entirely in English, crafting his sentences fastidiously …’ This is everywhere apparent in the essays here.They range from analyses of imperialists such as Curzon and Churchill, to nationalists such as Nehru, Gandhi, Ambedkar, and Patel, to novelist-democrats such as E.M. Forster and Rabindranath Tagore. The Suez Crisis, cricketers and cricket-writing, secularism and Hindutva, women and Indian law, and the English language in South Asia are among the varied subjects that they are about.Printed Pages: 444. 101955

Capital and its Discontents: Conversations with Radical Thinkers in a Time of Tumult
Aakar Books; New Delhi, India; 9789350024560; Softcover; New;
Capitalism is stumbling, empire is faltering, and the planet is thawing. Yet many people are still grasping to understand these multiple crises and to find a way forward to a just future. Into the breach come the essential insights of Capital and Its Discontents, which cut through the gristle to get to the heart of capitalism and neoliberalism, capitalism’s vulnerabilities at this conjuncture—and what can we do to hasten its demise. Through a series of incisive conversations with some of the most eminent thinkers and political economists on the Left—including David Harvey, Ellen Meiksins Wood, Mike Davis, Leo Panitch, Tariq Ali, and Noam Chomsky—Capital and Its Discontents illuminates the dynamic contradictions undergirding capitalism. The left luminaries in Capital and Its Discontents look at potential avenues out of the mess—as well as wring turns and neeless detours—drawing lessons from the inner workings of capitalism, the history of postcolonial states in the Global South, struggles against imperialism past and present, the eternal pendulum swing of radicalism, the corrosive legacy of postmodernsim, and the potentialities of the radical tradition. When economics professor Krishna decides to move for a few months to Goa from the US, he hopes to be able to do some research and perhaps try and recover from the death of his wife. But in the house he rents, he finds a roll of papers which he discovers is the diary of a ten-year-old girl, Suchitra. Through the heartrending entries, he discovers that she is one of several young children brought to Goa as part of a paedophile ring run by someone clearly influential.Krishna’s decision to try and find the girl propels him into a web of intrigues and machinations. As he tries to grapple his way in a world far outside his field of experience, he must decide who to trust, what secrets to keep and most of all, how he can bring some justice to a little girl. 109711

Living with Siva: Hinduism's Contemporary Culture
Motilal Banarsidass Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2013; 8120832647; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New;
365 daily lessons based on ancient Vedic laws, disclosing how to approach family, money, relationships, technology, food, worship, yoga and karma to live a truly spiritual life. You will find in this book the deepest truths and insights of Indian spirituality, some of it never published before, all of it relevant to your personal awakening on the path to merging with God. Drawn from fifty years of yogic realizations and sharing the Hindu mystical teachings with aspirants, Dancing with Siva is the first book of a remarkable trilogy called The Master Course. The trilogy is a detailed summary of astanga yoga also called raja yoga, which contains eight successive steps, each one dependent upon the one that precedes it. These eight steps are yama (restraint), niyama (observance), asana (posture), pranayama (breath control), pratyahara (sense withdrawal), dharana (concentration), dhyana (meditation) and samadhi (contemplation). Merging with Siva, the third book of the trilogy, encompasses steps five, six and seven, leading to eight-the deeper realizations, samadhis, yogic experiences and mystical encounters, such as the inner light and nada-nadi sakti-all of which we begin to experience once we learn to dance with Siva and live with Siva. Upon a solid foundation of understanding, the yogic and metaphysical experiences described in Merging with Siva come naturally and are sustainable.Living with Siva, the second book of the trilogy, explores Saivite lifestyle, culture, family life character-building and the overcoming of uncomplimentary habits. If focuses on yama, niyama and, in a lesser way, asana and pranayama (hatha yoga).Printed Pages: 998. 102087

Motilal Banarsidass Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2011; 8120815068; Second Reprint; Hardcover; New; New;
"In an excellent, clear and cultivated style, with simple words and a refreshing, subtle sense of humor the Great Genesa is introduced to the reader. Each and every aspect, relation, symbol and meaning of Lord Genesa has been explained and detailed skillfully, along with mantras, prayers and pujas to pay reverence to the merciful elephant-faced God. Many may think of Lord Genesa as a little-overweight, pompous, elephant-headed Deity who belongs somehow to the Hindu pantheon, but with whom he never really has gotten acquainted. If this has been your case, then Loving Genesa has come to you at just the right time to get the right answers to all your questions and bring you closer to the magnificent and charming Ganapati, the Treasurer of all Knowledge and Great Ruler of the Universe. "I express my heartiest thanks to Satguruji Subramuniyaswami for this wonderful book from which pours forth an abundance of divine nectar, wisdom and bliss.
