Surrender
Yogi Impressions; Mumbai, India; 8188479128; First Indian Edition; Paperback; New; 16 Cms x 23 Cms
Medals or stripes proclaiming your designation are of little consequence when you are cornered by a hardened criminal. Viewed from this perspective alone, life 'on the beat' for top-cop Aftab Ahmed Khan has been no safer than that of any ordinary policeman patrolling the mean streets. What made a man who dreamt of doing a doctorate in literature don the uniform and storm into a world of crime and violence? What was it like playing a game where all the rules apply only to you, and never to your desperate opponent? How did it feel to be constantly stalked by danger, never knowing whether you would return home for dinner, ever? You may not be living 'on the edge' like Khan did for many, many years, but you may still welcome a tip or two on how to switch on the sunshine when darkness descends without warning. And, of course: If you are a person whose professional life is under constant public scrutiny... If you are in charge of a team whose efficiency, morale and loyalty depend upon your leadership qualities and ability to make split-second decisions to prevent major disasters... If you have to frequently compromise on personal joys like spending 'quality time' with your family because you have to be on-the-job at unearthly hours... Plus, If you too have woken up one morning to find the carpet has been suddenly whisked away from under your feet... Printed Pages: 152. 011003

Fundamentals of Islamic Culture
Discovery Publishing House Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2014; 8183567681; Hardcover; New; New;
Islam is the only religion, under the sun, which encompasses a whole of the life of man in this world and the world hereafter. Complete as per the natural needs of man, Islam was introduced in this world, over one thousand and four hundred years ago. Prophet Muhammad (Pbuh), who is the last and final prophet in the line of about one lakh and twenty-four thousand prophets, and messengers, was endowed with the Holy Quran by Allah, the Almighty for the benefit of mankind, in general. Prophet Muhammad (Pbuh) was sent to this world as mercy for all the worlds--Rahmat-ul-lil-Aalamin. The period when Prophet Muhammad (Pbuh) came to this world was very much under the blanket of ignorance and inhuman practices. Idol-worship was rampant and there were numerous idols of Gods in Mecca and the surrounding areas. With the arrival of Prophet Muhammad (Pbuh) on the scene, a sea change came in the world of Arabs. And gradually, an Islamic culture came on the scene. Islam discarded all Gods, besides Allah, the Almighty and urged to worship Him only. People were asked to accept whole-heartedly that Prophet Muhammad (Pbuh) was His Prophet and Messenger. Similarly, prayers five times a day, fasts in the month of Ramadan, poor-due or charity generously, pilgrimage to Mecca, once in life, respect for parents, rights of neighbours without any distinction of faith, marrying widows, payment of dower to wives, without delay, loving kids and respecting elders etc. became some of the distinguishing features, Islamic culture stood for. No doubt, there are a number of books on the subject, already in the market, yet there was being felt a need for such a comprehensive and all-encompassing encyclpaedic work, which may cover most of all aspects of this subject between its covers. Thanks Allah, we have succeeded in bringing out the dream encyclpaedic work in your service. This painstaking work is the fruition of toilsome, labour by the undersigned. Rightly, it must prove to be beneficial for all the concerned, alike. Positive comments are always welcome. Vedic Grammar was published in 1910 in the important series Grundriss der Indo-arischen Philologie und Alter tumskunde (Encyclopaedia of Indo-Aryan Research), edited by Georg Buhler. There is in fact a much stronger and more convincing reason for reprinting this work, and this is the fact that it has not really been supplanted until the present day, at least not by a handbook written in English. Vedic Grammar is the greatest work of Professor Macdonell, a work by which he has taken his place among the greatest of orientalists. Printed Pages: 456. 029097

A Vedic Grammar for Students
D.K. Printworld (P) Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2010; 8124601275; Softcover; New; 14 x 19 Cm
Here is a key to unlock the oldest treasury of mankind's wisdom: Vedic literature -- not just the metrical language of its hymns, but also the prose pieces of the Brahmanas/Brah-mana-like writings: whether from the Atharva or the Yujurveda. Setting forth a comprehensive phonetic survey of Vedic sounds, the author: an eminent Orientalist of yester years, offers lucid explanatory accounts of Vedic sandhi-system (euphonic combination), declension, conjugation, indeclinable words, nominal stem formation and, finally, of its syntax -- with numerous illustrations. At the base of Macdonell's Grammar is the first ever, yet the most authentic, linguistic material of the Rigveda -- supplemented, though, it is from other Samhitas as well. Also marked here are the grammatical forms of the Brahmanas where they differ from those of the later-day classical Sanskrit. Now 'reprinted' afresh in an innovative format, this book has sustained its decades-long worldwide importance as an undisputed, systematically organised aid to the study of Vedic literature. And, for sure, retains its indispensablity to scholars even today!Printed Pages: 527. 100492

Vedic Mythology
Motilal Banarsidass Publishers Private Limited/Research India Press; New Delhi, India; 8120811135; Hardcover; New; New;
Religion in its widest sense includes on the one hand the conception which men entertain of the divine or supernatural powers and, on the other, that sense of the dependence of human welfare on those powers which finds its expression in various forms of worship. Mythology is connected with the former side of religion as furnishing the whole body of myths or stories which are told about gods and heroes and which describe their character and origin, their actions and surroundings. Such myths have their source in the attempt of the human mind,in a primitive and unscientific age, to explain the various forces and phenomena of nature with which man is confronted.Vedic Mythology presents the earliest stage in the evolution of beliefs which constitute the source of religious concepts of the majority of Indian people. The book is divided into seven Chapters. Chapter I is intro-ductory. It deals primarily with the sources and traits of Vedic Mythology. Chapter II states the Vedic concepts of the world and its origin. Chapter III classifies deities into different categories: celestial, atmospheric, terrestrial, abstract, dual and tutelary. Chapter IV relates to mythical priests and heroes. Chapter V details the lower species, birds and animals as well as inanimate objects and describes their general traits. Chapter VI treats of aerial and terrestrial demons and fiends, asuras, paƒis, raksasas,pisacas, etc. Chapter VII deals with heaven, hell, yama, pitrs and the life to come. Documented with Sanskrit and General Index, this work consti-tutes a valuable contribution in the field of Vedic mythology. Printed Pages: 189. 110031

The Sanskrit Drama: In its Origin, Development Theory and Practice
Motilal Banarsidass Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2015; 8120815300; Third Reprint; Softcover; New;
Since the appearance of Sylvain Levi's admirable treatise, Le theatre Indian, the first adequate sketch of the origin and development of the Indian drama and of Indian dramatic theory, in the last decade of the nineteenth century, the discovery of important fragments of the dramas of Asvaghosa and Bhasa had thrown unexpected light on the early history of the drama in India, which necessitated a fresh investigation of the origin and development of the drama in the light of the new materials available, resulting in the publication of the present work by Prof. A.B. Keith in 1924. The Indian tradition, preserved in the Natyasastra of Bharata, the oldest of the texts of the theory of drama, claims for drama divine origin. It is said that the god Brahma created a new form of literature by taking from the Rgveda the element of recitation, from the Samaveda song, from the Yajurveda the mimetic art and from the Atharvaveda sentiment; then he bade Visvakarman, the divine architect, build a play-house in which the sage Bharata was instructed to carry into practice the art thus created. Anyway, in tracing the development of the drama, Prof. Keith, in this work, has laid stress only on the great writers and on dramatists who wrote before the end of the first millennium. of later works he has selected few typical specimens for description. Combat Support Operations: AWACS in Air Warfare
KW Publishers; New Delhi, India; 2012; 9789381904039; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New;
India received the first of its contracted Airborne Warning and Control System (AWACS) on May 25, 2009, which was formally inducted by Defence Minister A.K. Antony on May 28, 2009. With the induction of the AWACS, India joined a club of only six other nations—the US, Russia, Britain, Japan, Australia and Turkey—that operate such a sophisticated system. ?e induction of AWACS was eagerly awaited mainly because of its capability to support the nation’s politico military strategy in more ways than one.The dominant role of AWACS in air defence operations needs no emphasis, but in addition to air defence, its importance lies in the strategic capabilities that it engenders for national security. That, perhaps, is the reason for an increasing number of nations evaluating and acquiring different versions of airborne early warning systems to meet their national security requirements. The importance of AWACS for national security stems from its capability to provide strategic, operational and tactical solutions, and battlefield intelligence—all from one platform. In addition to typical air defence operations, AWACS have been utilised as for ‘power projection, ‘peace enforcement, ‘instruments of coercive diplomacy’, ‘strategic C4I and battle management platform’, etc.There are many issues related to AWACS beyond air defence. Where does the operational role finish and strategic importance begin to take over? Are there areas of overlap and do both roles overshadow each other? What would be the effectiveness of AWACS in mountainous terrain? Will it be able to effectively support battlefield air interdiction missions, close air support missions and provide extensive early warning as is expected from AWACS? The next question could be, “If the adversary also acquires AWACS, what would be the implications for a nation in conditions of AWACS symmetry?Printed Pages: 206. 104347

Philosophy of Religion
Chaukhambha Publications; New Delhi, India; 2010; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New;
The book is distinctive in three readily discernible respects. In the first place, Professor Garnett, develops his ideas of religion according to a methodology which gives the entire presentation clarity, unity, authenticity, and practicality. In the second place, the author’s interpretation of the nature and function of religion emerges from novel fundamental theses which find its origin in empirical knowledge. In the third place, the author avoids an extreme empiricism by passing from the factual datum of his investigation to a normative, trans-centennial, and universal view of religious reality; his argument leads to legitimate faith in the logical possibility of God, freedom, immortality, and reflects, with frankness and conviction, the author’s own belief in the moral significance of these great religious affirmations. In his views of knowledge, values, and the physical world, Professor Garnett is very definitely a realist. The book for these reasons makes for compulsive reading for the students of Religion and Philosophy. 100655

Analysis of Kanjur (Second Edition)
Sri Satguru Publications; Delhi, India; 1982; 8170300398; Second Edition; Hardcover; New; New;
Alexander Csoma de Koros studied the two great collections of Tibetan translations of Buddhist texts the Kanjur and the bstan-gyur. The great compilations of the Tibetan Sacred Books is styled as Kanjur or bKagyur. These books contains the doctrine of Shakya, the Buddha. The Kanjur collecetions comprises the seven great divisions. 1. Dul-va (Sans.-Vinaya), 2. Seaphyin (Sans.-Praj Maparamita), 3. Phal-chen (Sans.-Buddha vata sangha), 4. dKon-brtsegs (Sans.-Ratankuta), 5. mDo-sde (Sans.-Sutranta), 6. Myan-das (Sans.-Niravana), 7. r Gud (Sans.-Tantra). The present Book Analysis of Kanjur is divided into four chapters. Chapter I contains analysis of the Dul-va division of the Kanjur. This division of the Kanjur generally deals on the religious discipline of the religious persons. Chapter II describes the life of the Buddha according to the Tibetan translation of the Lalita-vistara and of the Abhiniskramanasutra. This is an important analysis because no Sanskrit original of the two works has been preserved. Chapter III contains an analysis of the two to seven divisions of the Kanjur - Ses-phyin, Phalchen, dKon-brtsegs, mDo-sde, Myen-das and rGud. Chapter IV contains list of the works of the bstan gyur along with the Tibetan translation of the titles. Of particulars interest is the list of the twenty four sections of the Tantra section. Scholars and research students interested in Tibetan, Buddhist, Central and South Asian Studies will find this work highly useful for their studies and research.Printed Pages: 287. 101136

Srimad Bhagavata: The Message Divine
Aditya Prakashan; New Delhi, India; 2010; 8188643319; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New; 15 x 23 Cm
Srimad Bhagavata : The Message Divine is only drop of nectar from the ocean of nectar Srimad Bhagavata Mahapurana. It is expected that the nectar shall lead the readers to the land of immortality to experience divine bliss in this life only. About the Author: Sri Ramakrishna devotee Arun Deva Bhattacharya (born in 1942 at Allahabad) had a love for spiritualism and music from an early age enabling him to come in contact with the profoundly wise people frequently. The double (Electrical and Mechanical) Engineer had his Electrical Engineering qualification form I.I.T. Kharagpur and had slowly gone to the position of a senior level technocrat in his service carrier. He took to the writing work in his matured life only. With the advantage of knowing different languages (English, Hindi, Bengali, Sanskrit etc.) it was easier for the chartered Engineer to peep into spiritualism and divinity. Advaita Ashram was the first publisher which brought out his book Swami Premchanda in Hindu. The Bengali books were published by Gita Press, Gorakhpur which included translations of Srimad Bhagavata and Ramacaritamanasa and two more books authored by him (viz. Bhagavater Monimukto and Bhagavata Ratnavali). Recently a Delhi publisher has published in English The Immortal Tales by the same author. Printed Pages: 200. 100034

Bhasa: A Study
Munshiram Manoharlal Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 1968; 8121503558; Second Revised Edition; Hard Cover; New; New; 15 Cms x 23 Cms
In the field of Sanskrit literature, no other event has probably been of as great significance as the discovery, in 1909 by Mm. Dr. T. Ganapati Sastri, of the thirteen plays ascribed to Bhasa. With that discovery, Bhasa, who was till then a mere name mentioned in passing by poets, dramatists and anthologists, became not only a reality but one of the most luminous stars in the Sanskrit literary galaxy. In this little over half a century, hundreds of critiques, big and small, have poured forth on the works of Bhasa, but it would be admitted on all hands that the present work, Bhasa-A Study, by Dr. A.D. Pusalker, is the most detailed and comprehensive, written with understanding and authority. First published in 1940, this work has come to be considered as almost the last word on the subject. That such an eminent scholar as Dr. A.B. Keith has contributed the Foreword to it is in itself a testimony to the high quality of the book. The book is divided into two sections: The first is concerned with the Bhasa Problem and discusses at length the question of authenticity, authorship and date, besides examining and estimating the literary excellence of each of the plays. The second, bigger than the first, takes a yet different line of research. It paints the social conditions of the time of Bhasa as revealed from his works and would, therefore, be of absorbing interest even to those whose concern transcends literature. In addition, the present second edition is brought up to date being supplemented by two new chapters, one of which surveys the recent material on Bhasa and the other is on the Yajnaphala. In short, the book is a beacon-light to the students of Bhasa in particular and Sanskrit literature and drama in general. Printed Pages: 640. 023459
