But, two crime reporters think otherwise.Seeking redemption through this case are Prakash and Seema, ace journalists in their professional lives, but broken individuals in the darkness of their personal hells. As they dig deeper into the mystery, they are led into the ominous forests of Bandhavgarh where an eerily similar massacre had occurred eight years ago.They never see it coming what hits them next.One by one their leads start turning up in body bags and they are chased by assassins at every corner. Soon they would realize that they are pitted against evil powers pervading the business and political DNA of the country, with an unbelievably sinister agenda.Always one step ahead of them, there is no place to hide for the two journalists. The only way is to fight back. But, to do that, Prakash and Seema will first have to survive. 109721

State of Conflict and Democratic Movement in Nepal
Vij Books India Pvt. Ltd.; Mumbai, India; 2013; 9789382652199; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New;
Nepal has reached a critical phase. The new constitution is in the making, and with its promulgation, the country would enter into a new phase of democracy along with a number of structural changes. During the last two decades, many significant issues have emerged on the scene of Nepali society and polity. The process of political transition has unfolded many dimensions of considerable importance. The questions of stabilization of democracy, federalism, ethnicity, regionalism, social inclusion, gender, etc., are becoming the core issues. The demography, migration and health issues are gaining currency demanding immediate attention. The media has started acquiring a relevant role in this context. The civil society too finds itself assuming new shape and role accordingly. The present volume is thus successful in taking account of a lot of issues that happened in Nepal, especially after the advent of democracy in the 1950s. The book has tried to link the past with the present; it tries to analyse the present with the lens of historical realities. The permanent nature of transition in Nepal has been attributed to power-greedy rulers of the past who always tried to play India or China card to remain in power. Similarly, marginalization of ethnic communities, Dalits, women, etc. by the King, political parties like the Nepal Congress and the CPN (UML) has been described as the prime reason behind the rise and growth of Maoist movement in Nepal.Printed Pages: 284. 103197

Where We Come From, Where We Go: Tales from the Seven Sisters
Westland Limited; New Delhi, India; 9789384030926; Softcover; New;
Here are thirty tales that come from the seven sister states of Northeast India, tales that have been in circulation orally for generations, but never brought together in this manner. This is a first-time collation that covers the gamut of northeastern culture, vividly imagining the genesis of our world, our ideals, identities and artefacts-telling us also about what happens when it all ends and sometimes, questioning the end itself. These folk fables convey our eagerness to share the Northeast worldview with all those who populate what is often called the Indian mainland. And yet, as the tales bear out, the periphery is also its own centre, the margin its own mainland.This book, by well-known writer and journalist Uddipana Goswami and accompanied by exquisite and evocative illustrations by artist Pankaj Thapa, takes us into the heart and soul of the Northeast. For those not familiar with the region, it will act as a fascinating guide. For those who already love it, though, heres a chance to rediscover why. 109704

Human Rights and Peace: Ideas, Laws, Institutions and Movements
Sage Publications; New Delhi, India; 2009; 8178298848; First Edition; Paperback; New;
Human Rights and Peace: Ideas, Laws, Institutions and Movements redefines the ambit of peace, presenting a radically different perspective of looking at its relationship with human rights. It deals with the transformation of both the definition and practice of peace, showing how it has now taken the domain of human rights into its fold. Through experiential articles on the themes of ideas, laws, institutions, and movements, this collection reveals how people’s struggles against specific forms of institutionalised violence take the form of calls for ‘peace’. It brings together hitherto unpublished writings on peace and human rights. It also includes some rare articles extracted from landmark published pieces. This book is an insightful resource for students and researchers of Peace Studies, Human Rights, Politics, and International Relations. It is also an invaluable idea bank for activists, think tanks and policy makers who seek to understand the evolving paradigm of peace and human rights. Printed Pages: 368. 028354

God's Own Untouchable
Times Group Books; New Delhi, India; 2012; 9789380828725; First Edition; Softcover; New; ]
Aaron Micah is elevated to a bishop. His origin is shockingly traced back to the Pulaya (Untouchable) community. In a brilliant narration, which goes back and forth, the author keeps the reader firmly engrossed in the twists and turns which occur in Micah's life and in the lives of his ancestors. This book attempts to bring to the fore the below-the-surface caste tensions prevalent among the Syrian Christians of Kerala. Christianity preaches equality among all but its followers do not follow the tenants. A real edge of the seat narration,especially when it comes to the conflict between Rome and the local church authorities to designating the Bishop.Printed Pages: 312. 104664

Empowered Masters: Tibetan Wall Paintings of Mahasiddhas at Gyantse
Serindia Publications; Chicago, USA; 2006; 1932476245; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New; 230 x 280 Mm
Some of the most important Tibetan Buddhist monuments to have survived the ravages of history are the temples and chapels at Gyantse in Southern Tibet. In a chapel on the upper floor of the Palkhor Tsuglagkhang there exist superb wall paintings of the legendary eighty-four mah?siddhas – tantric adepts who, through effort and practice, have attained perfection and are endowed with extraordinary powers. These 15th-century images are the most splendid extant painted representations of mah?siddhas in Tibet, yet they have never been published as an entire cycle until now. This has largely been due to the exceedingly difficult task of identification. Empowered Masters: Tibetan Wall Paintings of Mah?siddhas at Gyantse illustrates and describes these important murals. Each of the vivid masters is wonderfully presented; each has a name inscribed in Tibetan script. The stories of the mah?siddhas depict unorthodox, existential lives that encompass all of human experience, and provide insight into a wide range of tantric practice. This book introduces the monastic complex of Gyantse, then guides the reader through every wall painting of this magnificent chapel. Each mah?siddha image is illustrated in a full colour plate, with an accompanying description on the opposite page. The text briefly describes stylistic elements as well, and the introduction and appendices provide fascinating further information. Printed Pages: 224 with 100 colour illustrations. 036671

108 Buddhist Statues in Tibet: Evolution of Tibetan Sculptures
Serindia Publications; London, UK; 2008; 1932476385; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New; 240 x 345 Mm
Mostly unknown to the outside world, the temples and storerooms of Tibet’s monasteries shelter a great number of ancient Buddhist objects. Not only are there a great number of Buddhist sculptures and paintings produced by Tibetan artists, but included also are rare examples originating from India, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Nepal, Burma, and China. These images have withstood sometimes more than one thousand years of warfare and other calamities. Despite a growing number of books dealing with various aspects of Tibetan culture and religion, most publications have the shortcoming that they are almost exclusively illustrated with objects scattered worldwide in private and public collections. A notable exception is the two-volume chronicle Buddhist Sculptures in Tibet, published in 2001 by this author. However, it is monumental in scale and there is a need for a more affordable condensed edition. 108 Buddhist Statues in Tibet not only fills the need for such a volume, but also provides additional research and recently photographed discoveries. It is a comprehensive yet accessible guide to the stylistic development of Buddhist sculptures in Tibet. By using existing examples in monasteries, it also acts as a catalogue record of these objects that helps to ensure these objects remain there in the foreseeable future. This will enable future generations of scholars to do additional research with the same objects, unlike objects in private collections that are usually sold after some years. The book also includes a DVD of digital photographs of the 108 statues illustrated in this book and of the 419 most important Buddhist sculptures in the collection of the Jo khang / Lhasa gTsug lag khang. Some 311 of them were previously published in Buddhist Sculptures in Tibet. The remaining 108 sculptures will be illustrated in Jokhang Tibet’s Most Sacred Temple, edited by Gyurme Dorje (to be published by Thames & Hudson). These 527 digital photographs can be downloaded free of charge by anyone, regardless whether for personal use or for publication. It is the hope of the author that other scholars will take use of this opportunity to publish some of these wonderful Buddhist sculptures. Printed Pages: 212 with 120 colour illustrations. 027808

The Social Dimensions of Early Buddhism
Munshiram Manoharlal Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2015; 8121507499; Reprint; Hardcover; New; New; 15 x 23 Cm
The book examines the relationship of Buddhism to its locus, the expanding agrarian economy of the Ganga valley during the period 600-300 BC. It outlines the contours of the major social and economic groups that were the dramatic personae in this dynamic process, especially the gahapati, who entrepreneurial role in the economy has not received the attention it deserves. The work explores the emergence of sharp differentiation between those in control of the means of production, who dominated the agrarian scene, and those marginalized groups whose labour was essential to the expanding economy but who remained vulnerable, being excluded from both economic and social power. It also examines the changing political environment and the gradual collapse of the gana-sanghas in the face of the expanding monarchial formations of the Ganga valley. Buddhism's complex response to this changing economic, social and political context is the central concern of this book. It argues that Buddhism responded in a dialectical manner to the economy, society and power, conceptualizing in a more humane, if not 'radical', way the direction in which a changing society could re-order social and political relations. Rewriting History: The Life and Times of Pandita Ramabai
Zubaan; New Delhi, India; 8185107793; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New;
This book outlines the reconstitution of patriarchies in nieneteenth century Maharashtra through an exploration of the life, work and times of Pandita Ramabai, one of India's earliest feminists. It examines the manner in which the colonial state's new institutional structures, caste contestations, class formation and nationalism transformed and reorganised gender relations. It also explores the nature of the new agendas being set for women, how these were received by them and in what ways and to what extent their consent to these reconstructed patriarchies was produced. The author shows that while many women were ready to act as willing reproducers of caste, class and gender norms, there were others who withheld consent to the dominant model of patriarchy emerging in the nineteenth century. She argues that certain processes in nineteenth century Maharashtra created the conditions for a fairly sharp critique of patriarchy to emerge, a unique feature for its time. This new edition comes with a fresh introduction that details recent discussions on issues of patriarchy, class and gender particularly in the context of Maharashtra; it also addresses issues raised in some new books on the life of Ramabai. Contents Prologue 1. Caste, Gender and the State in Eighteenth Century Maharashtra 2. Caste Contestation, Class Formation, Nationalism and Gender 3. Law, Colonial State and Gender 4. Men, Women and the Embattled Family 5. On Widowhood: The Critique of Cultural Practices in Women's Writing 6. Structure and Agency: A Life and a Time Bibliography Index. Printed Pages: 418. 027149

Thinking Gender, Doing Gender: Feminist Scholarship and Practice Today
Orient BlackSwan; New Delhi, India; 2016; 8125062394; Hardcover; New; New; 15 x 23 Cm
In the 1980s, gender was acknowledged as a useful and necessary category of analysis. The first generation of feminist scholars defined the new field and provided a rich corpus of works; later generations of scholars and activists then expanded it through their writings on culture, film and media, and sexuality.Thinking Gender, Doing Gender focuses on these issues, as well as on pedagogy and classroom practice, theoretical obstacles created by disciplinary constraints, and practices in the performing arts from a gender perspective. This volume focuses more on doing gender rather thinking gender: in classrooms, in the making of curricula, in the writing and recall of history, in reading literature and cinema, and in the practice of culture in theatre and urban spaces. Faultless to a Fault: Gangesa on Upamana in Indian Epistemology
D.K. Printworld (P) Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2015; 8124608172; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New; 15 x 23 Cm
The present volume is a sequel to the author’s previous work entitled Dishonoured by Philosophers: Upamana in Indian Epistemology (2009) where she introduced the notion of upamana, its definition, process and also its status in Indian epistemology in general and the Nyaya school in particular. The book ended with an exposition of Udayanacarya, an eleventh-century Nyaya philosopher. But the debate did not end there. Many Indian philosophers took the hard task of reducing upamana to other pramanas, and there were other objections as well. The sequel volume is a logical and historical extension of the arguments made in defence of upamana in the previous work. An interesting feature of the continuing debate is that a large number of Indian philosophers including the Bauddhas, Jainas, Samkhyas, Vaisheshikas, Mimamsakas, Carvakas and even individual Naiyayikas such as Bhasarvajna were still doubtful of the status of upamana. Over and above all, there was the question of logical economy in a scheme of pramanas. The present work for the first time provides an intensive study of how the Indian philosopher Gangesha Upadhyaya took up the challenge in the twelfth century to give upamana a definite, irreducible place in the scheme of pramanas. Based on Gangesha’s monumental work Upamanacintamani along with Pragalbhacarya’s celebrated commentary on it, the author reopens the question of upamana in a dialogical method and tries to measure the perfection of Gangesha’s arguments. She upholds Gangesha’s standpoint as the height of perfection, the most vigorous defence of upamana in a series of defences and objections in a long course, and titles this task of Gangesha Faultless to a Fault in her book.Printed Pages: 126. 100544

The Oxford India Tagore: Selected Writings on Education and Nationalism
Oxford University Press; New Delhi, India; 2009; 0195677072; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New; 15 x 23 Cm
Poet, playwright, novelist, short story writer, essayist, composer, and painter, Rabindranath Tagore was a visionary nationalist, an internationalist, and a committed educationist. Tagore experimented with novel methods of teaching and pioneered comprehensive rural development at his university in Santiniketan as an experiment for the whole country. The goals were a revitalized peasantry, village self-reliance through small scale enterprises, cottage industries, and cooperative values. The Oxford India Tagore focuses on Tagore’s views on nationalism, internationalism, and his work on education. Including essays, letters, lectures, addresses, poetry, and his novel Four Chapters (Char Adhyaya), the selections bring to light how persistently Tagore sought a solution to the problems of his times in a new and creative education, in scholarly exchange between East and West, and in national self-respect. The writings—given as substantial excerpts or as full texts—make it clear that in many ways Tagore’s educational work and his nationalism deviated from both the colonialist historiography and the nationalist ideology of those times. The Introduction by Uma Das Gupta locates the author in his times, while the Notes provide additional information. The detailed chronology of Tagore’s life and times—a special feature of this volume—helps to link events in Tagore’s life with world events, and also provides a broad framework within which his work can be appreciated. The photographs, prefacing each section, vivify the life of one who wanted to bring the West on equal terms to an India of his aspiration: an India of multiple cultures; an India where the impoverished village is given education and dignity of life; an India building its strength and self-respect by uniting castes and communities under an enlightened leadership. Part of the prestigious ‘Oxford India Collection’, The Oxford India Tagore is as much for those who admire Tagore generally as for scholars of Indian history and culture. Foreign Elements in Ancient Indian Society
Munshiram Manoharlal Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 1979; 8121502365; First Edition; Cloth; New; New; 14 Cms x 22 Cms
In Indian history the decline of the Mauryan empire synchronised with large scale invasions leading to foreign occupation of northern India and parts of the Deccan. This also resulted in the infiltration of sizable foreign population. The political consequences of these invasions were indeed great and these have been adequately dealt with by scholars. The social consequences of foreign invasions have not, however, attracted the attention of scholars in the same measure. This book is an attempt to analyse and interpret these political upheavals in cultural terms. Food and drinks, dress ornaments and toilet, cults and cult objects, social organization and the caste system and social entertainments are primary to a society where the influence, if any, is most fundamental. These are, therefore, the aspects which have been taken up for studying the social impact of foreign invasions. Printed Pages: 210. 015153

Oxford University Press; New Delhi, India; 2005; 0195678451; First Edition; Hard Cover; New; New;
Five years after signing the Millennium Declaration, and at the star t of the 10-year countdown to the 2015 target date for the Millennium Development Goals, the world's governments are at a crossroads. If they continue with business as usual, 2005 will be the year in which the pledge of the Millennium Declaration is broken. If they act now to deliver on their pledges to the world's poorest people, they can make 2005 the start of a decade for development, helping countries to get back on track for achieving the Millennium Development Goals by 2015 and forging a new, more equitable pattern of globalization. This year's Human Development Report takes stock of human development, including progress towards the MDGs. Looking beyond statistics, it highlights the human costs of missed targets and broken promises. Extreme inequality between countries and within countries is identified as one of the main barriers to human development--and as a powerful brake on accelerated progress towards the MDGs. New approaches to international cooperation are vital if the promise of the Millennium Declaration is to be realized. Practical action is needed to make the next 10 years a "decade for development". Focusing on aid, trade and security--three of the central pillars of international cooperation-- Human Development Report 2005 sets out a bold analysis of the problems and identifies solutions. It argues that rich countries need to move beyond encouraging words to align their policies with the commitments made in the Millennium Declaration. Readership. 019678
