Chanakya Mantra (in Hindi)
Westland Limited; New Delhi, India; 9789381626610; Softcover; New;
Chanakya’s Chant (Hindi) covers not only the life of Chanakya, one of the greatest political strategists in Indian history, but also that of his reincarnation, Gangasagar Mishra. Gangasagar, who lives in a lesser known small town, is in the eyes of the world an ordinary teacher, a Brahmin who lives hand to mouth. However, this is not the truth about the man, who is the reincarnation of the greatest minister to one of the most powerful rulers in the Indian subcontinent, Chanakya. The book is unique in the sense that the stories of the lives of both the protagonists run parallel and are linked by the common thread of their intellect.First, the book depicts a story set in 340 BC, when a Brahmin, in order to avenge his father’s death, plans to overthrow the ruler of his state. For this, he mentors and grooms Chandragupta Maurya, the first ruler of the Maurya dynasty. The book also tells the story of the anonymous Indian Brahmin man who grooms and trains an ambitious girl from Kanpur in Uttar Pradesh, to become the future Prime Minister of this country. It is for all to see if Gangasagar is successful in transforming an ordinary girl into the most important woman in the country.Chanakya’s Chant (Hindi) shows not only the achievements of the great strategist but also his human flaws. He is considered to be a cold, calculating and manipulative mentor. 109576

Chanakya’s Chant
Westland Limited; New Delhi, India; 9789381626818; Softcover; New;
Chanakya’s Chant is a thrilling novel that tells its readers about a sharp parallel story between two individuals. One of these individuals is the very person who brought the scattered Indian subcontinent under the reign of Chandragupta Maurya-Chanakya. Chanakya is one of the wisest political strategists to have ever lived in the history of India. The second protagonist is Gangasagar Mishra, who is a rather insignificant Brahmin teacher, who seems to be struggling to make ends meet, but is actually a reincarnation of Chanakya himself.The author gives you an intricately woven plot that is set in two parallel worlds, but is tied together by its two protagonists, namely Chanakya and Gangasagar. Chanakya’s tale, set in 340BC, is a tale of revenge that Chanakya seeks against the king and how he brings in Chandragupta Maurya to take over the throne. The second tale, based in modern-day India is that of Gangasagar grooming a young girl from Kanpur, to eventually become the prime minister of India.Will Chanakya’s ingenious ways bring about a drastic turn in the events of the nation? This captivating book answers just that, through its exploration of Chanakya’s ingenious and calculated moves that have altered the course of events in the past.Chanakya’s Chant has been published by Westland Limited, in the year 2012 and is available in paperback. 109580

The Rozabal Line
Westland Limited; New Delhi, India; 9789381626825; Softcover; New;
A complex yet interesting plot, a taste of many centuries and religions, a touch of terror and a mystery behind Jesus being alive is what goes into The Rozabal Line. Written by Ashwin Sanghi, a thriller fiction writer, this book showcases a cult of visionaries who believe that Jesus escaped crucifixion and lived somewhere in Kashmir, India. With a story well-knit, The Rozabal Line received its title from the Rozabal shrine in India.The story revolves primarily around an American priest, Father Vincent Morgan, who receives visions of Jesus’ crucifixion simultaneously getting dreams of the life he might have lived in the past. While this part of the story grows, a lady finds a box in the library in the place where Mahabharata books were supposed to be kept. And there follows a scream before the lady faints. What lies in the box is a mystery for the readers to discover. This kick-starts the chain of secrets and terror in the story that readers experience. While in one part of the world these events are taking place, on the other side evolve thirteen people forming a terror group named Lashkar-e-Talatashar. A prediction that a new messenger is coming, Egyptian myths, the Aztec prophecy and pieces of Greek mythology, all combine to make this book an intriguing connection between religions and cultures. 109581

Codes of Misconduct: Regulating Prostitution in Late Colonial Bombay
Zubaan; New Delhi, India; 8189884425; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New; 140 x 215 Mm
"This remarkable study focuses on the relationship between forms of prostitution, discourses on law making, and law enforcement practices. Across the 19th and early 20th centuries, the colonial government in Bombay city formulated laws on prostitution that were enormously repetitive. Activities such as soliciting men, pimping and procuring women and girls for prostitution were banned in identical ways in multiple eras. Across the same hundred years, commercial sex grew vast in scale, and Bombay became a node in a transnational sex trade circuit. This book argues that while the expansion of Bombay's sex trade over the past century might suggest that laws were simply ineffectual, law making was instead a productive process that sustained particular forms of prostitution. In examining this dimension of colonial governance, Tambe evaluates the uses and limits of Foucault's approach to law and sexuality. " Printed Pages: 208. 034012

Irrigation Management Transfer: Strategies and Best Practices
Sage Publications; New Delhi, India; 2008; 8178298171; First Edition; Paperback; New;
Over the years, various factors like increased competition for water, fiscal constraints faced by the government in continued subsidies for irrigation management, the demonstrated improvement in water use equity and efficiency when managed by the users, have led to the devolution of irrigation management to users. Irrigation Management Transfer (IMT), that is, the relocation of responsibility and authority for irrigation management from government agencies to the users, such as water users’ associations, has been adopted in more than 25 countries across the world. However, its implementation and adaptation across and within countries has been varied and is at different stages of development. This work, supported by the Asian Development Bank (ADB), New Delhi, is a synthesis of strategies and best practices adopted by various countries with respect to IMT. It identifies key concerns such as the structure and functions of water users’ associations, financial mobilization and constraints, repair and maintenance of physical structures, operation of canal systems and capacity building and monitoring mechanisms. It also identifies enabling environments, including regulatory mechanisms and the role of non-governmental organizations. The last section of this volume distils critical issues and strategic options and suggests a way forward. It is largely based on secondary sources, although some field-based studies and visits were carried out across various states in India. Printed Pages: 248. 028838

Macroeconomic Management and Government Finances
Oxford University Press; New Delhi, India; 2009; 0195699475; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New; 14 Cms x 22 Cms
India’s growth performance has been impressive in the last five years, averaging close to 9 per cent. However, the vulnerability of the Indian economy to external shocks has raised concerns about sustaining this impressive performance. High inflation has led to monetary tightening and disrupted the process of fiscal consolidation. Financial crises and weakening capital account due to a reversal in portfolio investment have further worsened the prospects of immediate economic recovery. In this environment, issues pertaining to capital flows, volatility of the exchange rate, improved fiscal management for sustaining high growth, and financial sector reforms have gained immense importance. This volume deals with some of these critical areas concerning macroeconomic management in India. Written by the leading experts in this field, it provides a bird’s eye view of the growth experience in recent years. It explores the trends, problems, and prospects of the Indian economy. The essays reiterate that the pursuit of growth should be combined with due attention to stability and an inclusive process of development. 027914

Energy Infrastructure: Priorities, Constraints, and Strategies in India
Oxford University Press; New Delhi, India; 2008; 0195692101; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New; 14 Cms x 22 Cms
To sustain India’s growth graph in the medium and long-run requires commensurate increase in the supply of alternative forms of energy—electricity, nuclear, coal, oil, gas, as well as other fuels. Therefore, issues pertaining to energy security will continue to remain critical in India’s journey to attain development, prosperity, and equity. The term energy security essentially implies that (i) energy systems should be geared to meet the demand of households—both urban and rural—and commercial users at all times; (ii) availability of all forms of energy required for the smooth functioning of the economy should be ensured; and (iii) energy should be available at a reasonable price. A related and critical issue is that any future policy has to promote cleaner and more efficient technologies, adequate pollution control mechanisms, and explore cleaner sources of energy, so as to minimize costs to society associated with producing or consuming energy. The volume focuses on policy issues aimed at ensuring continuous availability of different forms of energy at an appropriate price reflecting social costs as opposed to private costs. 024743

Trade Policy, Industrial Peformance, and Private Sector Development in India
Oxford University Press; New Delhi, India; 2008; 0195694279; First Edition; Hardbound; New; New; 14 Cms x 22 Cms
The services and manufacturing sectors were the key drivers of India’s recent impressive growth performance, with major contribution from growing domestic demand. Consequently, issues pertaining to the role of trade and private sector in sustaining growth momentum and facilitating infrastructure development in India have come to the forefront. This volume deals with critical issues concerning trade policy, industrial performance, and private sector development in India. It discusses the infrastructure bottlenecks that have constrained high growth in manufacturing and in the services sector and highlights that inadequate infrastructure impedes growth of exports and that the public sector alone cannot meet investment requirements. Hence, there is an urgent need to provide an enabling environment to promote the private sector. The volume also addresses urgent issues constraining manufacturing growth and exports. These include the role of small scale sectors in supporting growth and exports and non-tariff barriers in India’s export destinations. Finally, it underlines the ongoing debate to understand the link between trade and income distribution. This is an important issue in India because the Eleventh Five Year Plan emphasizes not just high growth but inclusive growth. 021564

A Comprehensive History of Jainism, 2 vols. Vol. I: From the Earliest Beginning to AD 1000, Vol II: AD 1000-1600
Munshiram Manoharlal Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2000; 8121509300; Second Revised Edition; Hardbound; New; New; 14 Cms x 22 Cms
In this book an attempt has been made to write to a comprehensive and connected account about Jainism from 800 BC to the time of Mughal Emperor, Akbar. Jainism is older than Buddhism and first to protest against Brahmanical Hinduism, though most of the authorities on Jainism were Brahmins by birth and a few Ksatriyas also took part in the propagation. Parsvanatha, who was the real founder the penultimate tirthamkara of the religious system, lived 250 years before Gautama Buddha, Vardhamana Mahavira a contemporary of Buddha was the twenty-fourth and the last Tirthamakara of this religious system whereas Rsabhanatha was the first Tirthamkara. Mahavira made Jainism vastly popular with the masses of northern India. Afterwards from first century BC Jainism became popular in south India. Inspite of systematic vilification by Buddhist and the Brahmins, Jainism still continues to be a dominant religious system in India. Printed Pages: 305. 016353

Sañjhi was originally a ritual worship undertaken by unmarried girls throughout northern India to obtain a suitable husband. It became a temple tradition in the seventeenth century when the devotional bhakti movement linked it to the games played by Radha and K???a as children in Vraja, the cowherd camp where God was pleased to reside as Sri Krsna a in the previous era. The devotional verses of the next two centuries describe these games and evoke Sañjhi as a ritual design made with forest flowers in the autumn, after the rains. Thus, Radha, Krsna's ahladini sakti or joygoing potency, who is also prak?ti (nature), is engaged in her own beautification.Printed Pages: 63. 101663

Integrated Water Resources Management in South and South-East Asia
Oxford University Press; New Delhi, India; 2005; 0195669320; First Edition; Paperback; New; 14 Cms x 22 Cms
The concept of integrated water resources management (IWRM) is not new: it has been around for over two generations. During the 1990s, this concept was rediscovered by some international institutions, and they have since then promoted it extensively all over the world. There is no question that IWRM has now become a mainstream idea. While it is conceptually attractive, it is still an open question as to what extent it is possible to move from the concept to the implementation phase. It is thus absolutely critical to analyse to what extent IWRM has been applied to improve water management practices and processes at the operational level. The book answers this question for South and Southeast Asia, based on a series of comprehensive case studies which were prepared by leading authorities from Bangladesh, India, Malaysia, Nepal, Thailand and Vietnam, as well as for the Mekong River as a whole. The case studies assess the status of application of IWRM in the region, what are the results of such attempts, and identify their successes, failures and constraints. Printed Pages: 300. 009034

From Village Elder to British Judge: Custom, Customary Law and Tribal Society
Orient BlackSwan; New Delhi, India; 2012; 8125045570; Hardcover; New; New;
From Village Elder to British Judge examines the definition and redefinition of custom/ law in the context of the adivasis of Jharkhand during pre-colonial and colonial times. As a significant historical account, this book engages with the contemporary assertion of indigenous identity that draws boundaries between the adivasi as a custom-governed and law-governed people.The work draws on previously untapped oral historical evidence from Village Papers, conventional archives and published sources, including details of court cases vividly depicting the adivasi ways of life in the past. Deploying jurisprudential, sociological and anthropological approaches, it offers a holistic account of social dynamics, contradictory colonial legal viewpoints, continuity and change in indigenous customs, the role of law and the court system in bringing about social change. The book presents its key arguments vis-à-vis recent advances in India as well as other Asian and African territories. While it contests the general notion that customary law, rather, the very concept of tribe, is a colonial creation, it also describes the nature of adivasi customs and their self-representation.Printed Pages: 248. 101770

Many Ramayanas: The Diversity of a Narrative Tradition in South Asia
Motilal Banarsidass Publishers Private Limited/Research India Press; New Delhi, India; 2015; 0195635183; Softcover; New;
Throughout the centuries in India, authors and performers have produced diverse tellings of Ramayana in numerous media. Even so, most studies of this epic have concentrated on a single telling : Valmiki's Sanskrit Ramayana. In this volume, distinguished scholars of South Asian literature, religion, and anthropology focus instead on the many Ramayana influential in Indian culture and on the circumstances that have shaped these varied tellings of the Rama story.Together, the essays demonstrate that the Ramayana is multivocal, encompassing tellings of Rama's story that vary with regional literary tradition, social location, gender, religious affiliation, colonial context, intended audience, and genre. Western Realism and International Relations: A Non-Western View
Foundation Books; New Delhi, India; 8175962186; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New;
This book provides an alternative perspective of International Relations from Hiroshima to 9/11, both its diplomacy and mainstream scholarship are linked by realpolitik, in a vicious circle of retrogressive symbiosis. It simultaneously undermined the UN system of collective security from its origin and the scientific credential for its scholarship. The Cold War that it spawned restricted economic prosperity, political stability, and democratic freedom within its narrow core-area of the United States and Europe at the cost of its vast periphery in the Third World. Its unpredicted collapse extended insecurity across the entire globalised system, including its core-are as events since 9/11 forcefully underscores. While the new hegemonic system has become globally more insecure for all its citizens, its scholarship is still clueless about the collapse of the bipolar system it created in the midst of the massive confidence-building exercise to stabilize it; it is even less able to creatively respond to its orderly transition. This book pleads for democracy among the states as a component of justice, as a substitute for power, as the organizing principle of the global system, within a reformed UN system as the ‘centre for harmonizing the actions of humanity’, as envisaged in the Charter. In this task, scholarship must be inspired to be the catalytic agent by reversing its present role as a policy-science of power policies to perpetuate domination and servitude, and legitimizing it as ‘interdependence’ of the ‘global village’. It must liberate itself to become the harbinger of human emancipation, as in other fields of creative scholarship Contents Preface 1 National Security and the International System 2 Emergence of the Post-War Global System of Security 3 Myths and Reality of Realism 4 Western Realism in South Asia 5 Hegemony of Realism 6 Globalisation and the Crisis of Realism 7 Justice as Realism in International Relation Bibliography Index. The Peace Dividend- Progress for India & South-Asia
Roli Books; New Delhi, India; 2004; 8174363181; First Edition; Paperback; New; 9 x 11 Inches
As part of its mission to enhance and encourage the discussion and interaction among world leaders, thus creating international quality platforms aimed at solutions, the Hindustan Times, among India’s most respected newspapers, recently unveiled The Hindustan Times Leadership Initiative. The Initiative’s inaugural conference, ‘The Peace Dividend: Progress for India and South Asia? was held in New Delhi in December 2003. Key political and business leaders, strategists and thinkers—including Atal Bihari Vajpayee, Prime Minister of India, Sonia Gandhi, Congress President, Benazir Bhutto, former Prime Minister of Pakistan, Madeleine Albright, former US Secretary of State and Richard Haass, President, Council on Foreign Relations—met to discuss and map the economic, strategic and geopolitical future of India and South Asia, and suggest ways of solving South Asia’s most trying problems, from Kashmir to a general absence of trust. Here Prime Minister Vajpayee first broached the subject of a South Asia monetary union and a regional security council; Gandhi of a South Asian parliament; and Bhutto of how Pakistan must radically rethink its India policy. The conference set the tone for much that transpired a few weeks later in Islamabad: a historic meeting between Vajpayee and President Pervez Musharraf that initiated a crucial thaw in Indo-Pak relations and encouraged hopes for a progressive and productive future South Asia, home to a quarter of mankind. This volume is a record of history in the making. ‘The peace dividend for South Asia is the creation of new hope and opportunity for its billion and a half people.? Tradition and Modernity: Essays on Women of India
D.K. Printworld (P) Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2015; 8192611418; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New; 15 x 23 Cm
The anthology Tradition and Modernity: Essays on Women of India includes essays ranging from the philosophical and analytical to the descriptive and the explorative and the experimental perspectives. It explores the lived experiences and positioning of women in diverse Indian social, religious and cultural contexts. The essays deal with issues varying from the intricacies of the gender concepts embedded in contemporary tradition–modernity debates to detailed consideration of women currents of thought, action and life and the problem of understanding that they throw up.While a majority of the papers rightly reflect on the unequal and oppressive situation of the women in highly patriarchal and hierarchical settings, yet there are quite a few which sensitively touch upon the theme of human spirit and the beauty of love and relationships between man and woman in the midst of caste and gender hierarchies. There is reflection on the theme of the growing awareness about the women, environment and development, particularly the relationship between violence of nature and women.This collection of writings will appeal to readers of all hues as well as students and scholars of culture and religion, in particular of India, gender equality, democracy and difference and feminist theory. Indian music despite its limited popularity is not a spent force, but has still a great role to play in the firmament of world music is the siren song of this book, The Music of India by Atiya Begum Fyzee-Rahamin. Its hoary origin, gradual evolution, the impact of foreign influences, the two principal schools-the Karnataka (southern) and the Hindustani (northern)-and the glorious periods, when some of its illustrious exponents enriched it with their immortal compositions and elevated it to dizzy heights of perfection are brought into sharp focus. The mysteries and misconceptions engulfing it are dispelled by an elucidation of four important parts (angas): Sur Adhaya (Law of Tones), Tala Adhaya (Law of Rhythm), Ast Adhaya (Law of Musical Instruments) and Raga Adhaya (Law of Tunes). Its connexion with astrology and the exploits of some of its legendary masters are narrated to reveal the power of the Ragas and Raginis to transport the listeners to that haven of enchantment where nature and time stand still. The illustrations serve as foils to the text. All those interested in Indian Music will find this book an excellent introduction for further study.
