Bandicoots in the Moonlight
Penguin; New Delhi, India; 2008; 0143103792; First Edition; Paperback; New; 14 x 22 Cm
Teenage boy Anirban Roy grows up—not a lot wiser—in a small town in ’70s Bihar where his policeman father is posted to pick up intelligence on the looming Naxalite menace. Ganesh Nagar possesses neither village simplicity nor urban slick but observes a line of ethics that defies codification. It takes time for Anirban to learn to juggle adolescent angst and ping-pong hormones, loyal friends and part-time criminals, a bewildering succession of topsy-turvy lessons in life and lust, yet manage to keep the balls in the air. There are close encounters with animals, too: Experiments with reptiles; the sighting of bandicoots in full flight, their sleek coats gleaming in the moonlight; the hazards involved in stealing a parrot nestling; the part played by a domestic fowl in curing snakebite and predicting death; and the unusual role of donkeys in satiating adolescent lust. Rites of passage never got so down and dirty as in journalist Avijit Ghosh’s earthy account of boy-to-manhood in fictional Ganesh Nagar, an introverted district that could exist in India anytime, anywhere. Communication Technology and Human Development: Recent Experiences in the Indian Social Sector
Sage Publications; New Delhi, India; 2006; 0761934383; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New;
The role communication can play in facilitating social change and furthering the goals of development programmes is now widely acknowledged. However, what is not so well appreciated is that the application of communication technologies in social development programmes is a complex task which requires a professional approach. Based on more than 30 years of the author`s personal experience, this book provides an understanding of the practical issues that arise in the planning and implementation of communication programmes to bring about behaviour change in the Indian context. The first section of the book provides a historical background to the evolving nature of the application of communication technology in development. Case studies of innovative applications of communication technology, both in India and abroad, are described to assist a holistic understanding of the evolution of the role of development communiation. In Section II, the author presents recent and major initiatives in the design and implementation of communication strategies in three important social sectors—literacy, population issues and rural development (including poverty alleviation). In the concluding chapter, Avik Ghosh draws attention to various critical issues and concerns in the context of India`s development. He argues that the importance of communication in facilitating social change and the need to involve local communities in such initiatives is not sufficiently appreciated by policy-makers. Indian Classical Dance: Tradition in Transition
Lustre Press/Roli Books; New Delhi, India; 8174362169; Hardcover; New; New;
A sweeping look at the magnificence of Indian culture through its varied dance forms, Indian Classical Dance: Tradition in Transition is a tour de force through the forms, characteristics, challenges and changes in traditional dance. At one level, it is a compendium of classical dance, an exploration of its moods and majesty, and an ode to its sublime aesthetics. At another level, it is a stunning visual and scholarly portrayal of a pluralistic society teeming with cultural vitality. It is also a graphic appreciation of the human body, captured by the camera in moments of sheer grace, structured movement, cultivated expression and divine harmony. Bharatanatyam, Kathakali, Odissi, Kathak, Mohiniattam, Manipuri, Kuchipudi: the book is an exposition of these seven major dance forms - their history, growth, decay and renewal, right from the temple floor and kingly court to the modern stage. The future of these dance forms, their struggle for preservation, and their need to keep in step with the rhythm of today's fast-paced world are themes the author, one of India's most respected dance critics, explores and tries to resolve. Brilliant photographs captured by the lens of Avinash Pasricha, undoubtedly the master of Indian dance photography, make the book as vibrant as the dances it presents. In its range, definitive appraised and visual power. Indian Classical Dance: Tradition in Transition is the best there is in its genre. Printed Pages: 144. 108615

Vij Books India Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2012; 9789381411148; Hardcover; New; New;
This is an era of exponential growth especially in technologies. Air Forces are the most technology intensive fighting arms. An ideal Air Force would constantly embrace and adopt new technologies to retain it's cutting edge and all dominant status in battle space. Failure to do so may spell it's doom when faced with more current Air Force. Along with new technology there is a need to reorganise many aspects in the organisation. These include, but are not limited to, command and control setup, inter-service integration, HR function, organisational culture and attitude etc etc. This study focuses on the reorganisation already due and suggests ideas for the future.Printed Pages: 152. 103274

The Secret Red Book of Leadership
Wisdom Tree; New Delhi, India; 8183283861; Softcover; New;
The hidden truths of leadership—bitter or sweet—revealed like never before! Great leaders are like icebergs. They conceal more than they reveal. Indeed, mystery, and the art of retaining it, is integral to leadership. Leadership, then, is more an art than a science. It is not a reality that you can touch, feel and measure, but an illusion that is created by many tricks, which you should be able to learn and practise in a way that others are not able to grasp. This book, written by a serving officer of government, is an eye-opener for anybody who aspires to be a leader, at whatever level—nation, community or a small social group; and in whatever sphere—business, politics or administration. Bon voyage!Printed Pages: 240. 106747

Practising Spiritual Intelligence: For Innovetion, Leadership and Happiness
Wisdom Tree; New Delhi, India; 978-81-8328-324; Softcover; New;
Spiritual Intelligence refers to the intuitive knowledge of the self, others, situations and techniques to achieve the desired objectives. Hence it can be called the soul of all intelligences. Spiritual Intelligence enhances our power to inspire others by transforming their souls in such a way that their desires and aspirations are aligned in a single direction. Soul is beyond all reason and intellect. It is, in fact, the source of mind and intellect. One who knows his soul knows the universe, since soul is nothing but the microcosm of the universe. This book explains this body-soul continuum and suggests practical steps to evolve through the body-senses-mind-intellect to reach our soul. Welcome to this new path of spiritual evolution.Printed Pages: 216. 106857

Virat Kohli: Reliable Rebel
Jaico Publishing House; Delhi, India; 8184955243; Softcover; New;
In many ways, Kohli epitomizes the New Age Indian aggressive, sometimes brash, but also a go-getter with great clarity about what he wants.After making his mark at the junior level, when he led the Under-19 team to victory in the World Cup, Virat Kohli graduated into the senior ranks quite seamlessly and is now considered a pivotal player in the Indian team.He played a significant role in the 2011 World Cup triumph and has since matured into a consistent match-winner in limited overs cricket and a highly reliable batsman in the longer version of the game. His brilliant fielding enhances manifold his value to the team.Rated among the best young players in the world today, Kohli’s filmstar looks and dashing approach on the field make him hugely popular with both fans and brands. Not quite 25, he is sound on tactics, strong on fellow-player management and is already seen as the future captain of India.Ayaz Memon, one of India’s most prolific journalists, brings with him 33 years of experience in sports writing. Yuvraj Singh: Powerful Elegance
Jaico Publishing House; Delhi, India; 818495526X; Softcover; New;
At the Under-19 level, Yuvraj Singh was touted as the most gifted Indian cricketer since Sachin Tendulkar.Yuvraj had flair, power and a dazzling range of strokes that had critics and fans heaping encomiums on him. While he may not have quite lived up to early expectations, especially in Test cricket, Yuvraj has been brilliantly devastating in limited overs cricket, winning countless matches on his own.But, there is more to the Yuvraj story than just his exploits on the pitch. There has been no more stirring saga in modern Indian sport than his comeback to international cricket after a year-long fight with cancer that had threatened to finish his career prematurely. His six sixes in one over, off Stuart Broad in the 2007 T20 World Championship, is testimony to Yuvraj’s innate batting prowess, though this comes with a vexing poser just why could he not replicate such form in Tests too? Perhaps, considering his new vigour, that time is now.Ayaz Memon, one of India’s most prolific journalists, brings with him 33 years of experience in sports writing. The Challenge of Democracy: Citizenship, Rights, and Ethnic Conflicts in India and Israel
Cambridge University Press; New Delhi, India; 2012; 9789382264576; Hardcover; New; New;
This book analyzes public policy and governmental features in procedurally democratic states that govern deeply divided societies. It traces the political formula that enables such states to survive while sustaining a democratic process in the face of religious ethnic and national conflicts. It investigates citizenship discourses analyzes the mechanisms political regimes use to give rights to minorities while simultaneously limiting their power and illustrates how this unique political formula can be applied in two case studies of vastly different countries – Israel and India. The analogous conflicts in India and Israel that threaten the survival of democracy – the ethno-religious conflict between Hindus and Muslims in India and the ethno-national conflict between Jews and Arab-Palestinians in Israel – are analyzed in depth. In addition the core cases of India and Israel states in which democracy has survived for over sixty years are compared with two additional countries where democracy was short-lived.Printed Pages: 514. 101456

Blue Dust
IndiaInk/Roli Books; New Delhi, India; 8186939644; Softcover; New;
Blue Dust is an emotional, philosophical and cultural journey that maps the relationships, dreams, hopes and fears of three generations of a family in Pakistan and the Middle East. The central character is a highly volatile and loving girl/woman who struggles largely with her own insecurities in her relationships with her father, husband and sister and the world she is born into (from a social and religious point of view ultimately blurring her sense of identity). A significant thread of the narrative is the impact her relationship with her sister has on her life and personality - and the strength of that bond is one of the most enduring forces. Her daughter also plays a pivotal role in encapsulating the emotional mood and tone of the book- particularly in exploring dichotomies of reality and perception - and the power of memory and dreams in articulating how these people respond to the events of their lives.Through the story of this family the author also explores issues in Pakistan relevant to class, religious and social distinctions and the barriers caused by these, and a society which perpetuates and at the same time ignores issues of paedophilia and sexual repression. Blue Dust is a misty, dream-like, touching but often bloody portrayal of intensely self reflexive dramas of these individual people but relevant to the wider issues and concerns of Pakistani society as well.'A narrative of passionate characters and many strands, skillfully woven together in this engaging debut novel. Blue Dust is a surreal, poetic and complex work that handles difficult issues with courage.' Bapsi Sidhwa'With her poetic debut novel, Blue Dust, unfolds love's many moods. Ayesha Salman joins the list of exciting new novelists from Pakistan.' Maniza Naqvi Printed Pages: 216. 108479

The formation of middle class in colonial India was the result of long historical process. Its beginning could be traced since arrival of industrialization and trading economy, but concrete observation could be made after 1857 revolution. The formation of middle class could be explained by understanding the nature of national movement. The historical context of the development of middle classes in India is quite different from those in western world. In Europe, it came through industrial revolution. In case of India, it was 19th century under the patronage of British colonial rule that the middle classes beginning to emerge. There were two layers of economic system in rural and urban India. In urban area, the middle class was the product of new economy introduced by the British while rural middle class was still based on the land distribution system. It also has been noticed that there were uneven growths in middle class. Under the British rule there was a rise of a middle class in India. Administration, education, business and occupation played a significant role in providing Indians the jobs and in creating a middle class at that time. This book describes the rise of a middle class in colonial India. 111156

Bhuj: Art, Architecture, History
Mapin Publishing; New Delhi, India; 2006; 8188204536; Softcover; New;
When a horrifying earthquake in 2001 reduced large parts of the 16th-century city of Bhuj in western Gujarat, to rubble, there was little hope of reconstruction. This book, written five years after that fateful morning, narrates the city’s story of urban development over 450 tumultuous years, revisiting the work of potentates and commoners as they went about shaping its charming, if idiosyncratic outline.Illustrated with pictures and stories obtained from residents, museums, and local organisations in Bhuj, the book combines ethnography, a comment on the relationship between craft and city-building, and a thought-provoking critique of present-day development trends. Rare photographs from the 19th and early-20th century complement the book’s narrative. The book explores the role that the arts have played in city-building, and the prospects ahead to marshall them as instruments of future development. It is a book for citizens and visitors wanting an uncoventional introduction to Bhuj, and a portofolio of evidence for city planners, policy-makers and investors in the city. Tibetan Buddhism from the Ground Up: A Practical Approach to Modern Life
Wisdom Publications; Boston, USA; 1993; 0861710754; First Edition; Paperback; Brand New; 6 x 9 Inches
As long as our minds are dominated by the conditions of the external world, we are bound to remain in a state of dissatisfaction, always vulnerable to grief and fear. How then can we develop an inner sense of well-being and redefine our relationship to a world that seems unavoidably painful and unkind? Many have found a practical answer to that question in the 2,500-year-old teachings of Tibetan Buddhism. Here at last is an organized overview of these teachings, beginning with the basic themes of the sutras—;the general discourses of the Buddha—;and continuing through the esoteric concepts and advanced practices of Tantra. Unlike other introductions to Tibetan Buddhism, this accessible, enjoyable work doesn't stop with theory and history, but relates timeless spiritual principles to the pressing issues of modern life, both in terms of our daily experience and our uniquely Western world view. This fascinating, highly readable book asks neither unquestioning faith nor blind obedience to abstract concepts or religious beliefs. Rather, it challenges us to question and investigate life's issues for ourselves in the light of an ancient and effective approach to the sufferings and joys of the human condition. Navigation Environment of Ancient and Mediaeval Ports of Tamilaham
KW Publishers; New Delhi, India; 2008; 8187966785; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New;
In recent decades, marine archaeologists working in near-shore underwater areas have brought to light new find of enormous value. Scholars, working in their respective discipline areas concerning specific ports, have not been able to build a holistic perspective on the ports of the past, and their rise and decline. This is, to an extent, due to a lack of sea-perspective of the ports and their navigational environment. To fill this gap, through an interdisciplinary and integrative approach, the present work on navigational environment of the old and mediaeval ports of Tamilaham has been attempted. The book incorporates all available knowledge gathered till date.Printed Pages: 122. 104441

Saivism and the Phallic World, 2 Vols.
Munshiram Manoharlal Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 1993; 81-215-0618-7; Reprint; Hardcover; New; New; 16.5 Cms x 23 Cms
The present work deals exclusively with an area of profound mystic enquiry of perpetual interest. The secrets of the sacred East which had so far succeeded in drawing only limited interest along interested scholars appears to have, of late, exploded a popular interest. Naturally, a study of the actual bases of Saivism involves a close study of man's preoccupation with the subject of sex on the one hand, and of divine inspiration on the other. Religions of East and West of the ancients and moderns which have left us absorbing and interesting records of man's dive into the ocean of divine mystery and which have never been found missing in claiming the supreme intellectual and spiritual application of the human mind, have been placed under a scholarly scrutiny, which makes this work a remarkable contribution to the library of comparative religion. In fact to deal with Saivism is to deal with Hinduism in all its aspects; and to deal with the vexed subject of the worship of sex-organs is to enter into the very complex arena of primitive religions, and their traditional cultural forms. This popular misconception of equating Saivism with Phallicism compels us to make a thorough study of the subject on the basis of comparative religion. The World of Tantra
Munshiram Manoharlal Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2014; 8121509688; Reprint; Paperback; New; 15 x 23 Cm
It is a faithful presentation of personal experiences of a devoted man who has been throughout his life of 76 years searching for receiving an answer, an understandable logic behind those mystic events before which logic stands spell bound. These personal records-secret, mind boggling, enigmatic-none the less reserve for the reader an unfailing touch of reliance. Man stands here face to face with the mystery which takes the mind above matter, and wonderful gasps although the Hamlet like assurance comes in time to point out confidently to 'more things between heaven and earth'. Chapter by chapter, the author unfolds layer after layer the secrets of the tantra world, as he has found himself in, at times to satisfy his quest, at times as just a beam of blessing. The personal note of these pages, together with the lessons in Tantric practices, some sweet and startling, some horrid and blood-curdling, make this book an addition to the authentic report of his much maligned but equally intimate world. Those who want to profit and learn of and about what is and what could be held in store by tantra will find The World of Tantra a secret mind of relevant information at first hand. Varanasi Rediscovered
Munshiram Manoharlal Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 1999; 8121508606; First Edition; Hard Cover; New; New; 14.5 Cms x 22.5 Cms
Varanasi has been a subject of perennial interest eversince the days of Hiuen Tsang, Al-Biruni, Fitch, Coleman, Prinsep, etc. Interest in Varanasi has not in any way faded even in the modern days of electronics and computers. Travellers in India, and from the outside world have been equally keen about learning of this mysterious city, the oldest on earth, and yet the most vibrant for historians, scholars, antiquarians, travelers, sight-seers and pilgrims. In true and appropriate response to the theme hundreds of books in many do credit to the lore of Varanasi, a connoisseur's caravanserai. It takes courage to add to the vast literature existing on Varanasi, unless an author has something definitely new and a first-time hit on the age old fascinating subject. And this book, Varanasi Rediscovered, precisely proposes to hit a ground never before tried by scholars. It questions the very geography, topography, structural existence of the city so names, and accepted as a matter of fact, unchallenged, and unquestioned. Varanasi Rediscovered questions to this. Does the present city really represent the Varanasi of the Buddha, or for the people even before him? For the Harappan encroachers, or for the later Aryans? Has the city changed its site? Where could have been the original real Varanasi, so much praised in the scriptures, held so dear by the millions of Hindu devotees> Who or what caused such catastrophic changes for a city which still draws travelers and devotees from all over the world? The author's submission is bound to be a fundamental addition to the vast Varanasiad, although the thesis proposed could understandably raise a volume of controversy. It is new light thrown on an ancient subject. Printed Pages: 40 b/w illustrations and 12 maps. 015253

Musical Instruments of India: Their History and Development
Munshiram Manoharlal Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2014; 8121500486; Reprint; Hardcover; New; New; 15 x 23 Cm
Since the commencement of the pioneering studies in Indology in the late eighteenth century there has been a sustained interest in our musicology. Great amount of research has been carried out in this area of knowledge. Surprisingly enough in spite of so much work done; no systematic study of musical instruments has been produced. This book is an attempt to collect comprehensive data about Indian musical instruments, classify them, relate them to the generally ethnic movements in the country and present a critical study of the whole. All efforts have been made to collect information from as many sources as possible, viz., music texts, literature, scriptures, painting and also by personal surveys all over the country including the interiormost parts and tribals. We hope this present study will fill in the desideratum. Printed Pages: 176 with 107 b/w illustrations. 016670

The Music of India: A Scientific Study
Munshiram Manoharlal Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2011; 8121501954; Reprint; Hardcover; New; New; 15 x 23 Cm
This is an attempt to bring, to bear a 'scientific' attitude to Indian musicological problems. Tools and methods of modern science have been employed to probe into musical phenomena and Indian music history. No other term is perhaps so operatively basic as the tonic-drone in melodic music and today the tambura is the most important drone in Indian music. The physical and auditory tonal spectra of this instrument have been studied. Further, the immense importance of the emergence of the drone in Indian music history has been discussed at length, in terms of neuro-physiological dynamics. Musical sites-particularly the sruti-have posted enormous problems. It is posited herein that this is due to the confusion of two systems-one of harps and the other of fingerboard instruments. Detailed of experiments on the measurements of sruti-s have also been given. So also studies in gamaka and its psychological significance have been discussed. A fundamental theory in Indian aesthetics is that of rasa. Profound as it is, its scope in relation to music has to be evaluated. The results of experiments carried out show that this theory may not fit into musical aesthetics, in toto and it is now adumbrated; similarly the time theory of raga-s also seems to be of questionable application. Concepts of the information theory and other statistical methods have been applied to study the classification and the forms of raga-s with very promising results. The book, thus, spans across questions of methodology, dynamics of history, musical scales, non-conscious elements in music, raga-rasa, raga-rupa and musical perception. It is an invitation to an "adventure of ideas" and a reorientation to Indian musicology. Printed Pages: 288. 021037

Sociological Constraints to Industrial Development in North East India
Concept Publishing Company Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 1998; 817022733X; Hardcover; New; New;
North-East India is struggling with the problems of ecomomics development. The entire Norh-East India is caught up in a low producivity and low income syndrome in all sectors of Economic development. The value system of the societies of the different ethinic and cultural group of North-East India are mostly grounded to fatalism based on continuity and traditions, customs and usage. The potentialities created by modern science and technology are either not really known or not readily available or bot systematically applied owing to the advice to preserve the tradiotin and geritage. The population is growing markets are expanding and consumerism has caught imaginaion of the expanding middle class. There is an urgent need to identify the factors inhibiting the emergence of local entrepreneurship in different sectors among the ethnic groups of North-East India societies. Is the quantum of capital made available since 1950 for industrialisation adquate? Or are the non-economic factors like the traditional soft-life style and the attitude of the bulk of the indugenous people, their surrender of fatalism responsible for this lack of economic development of North-East India? The papers presented to the seminar analyse the issue in a social perspective based on field data of the contemporary divergent socienties in North-East India. Sociological constrainsts to economic development are not insurmountable. North-East India should learn from the success and failures of industrial development especially from the developing countries. Printed Pages: 273. 112435

Reorganisation of North-East India Since 1947
Concept Publishing Company Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 1996; 8170225779; Hardcover; New; New;
No region in India has undergone such fragmentation as North East has in the four decades after independence. What remains of the old province of Assam after the last reorganization in 1972 are virtually the districts of the Brahmaputra and barak valleys where British rule in the north east began after the first Anglo Burmese War (1824-26). The hill regions that were brought under the administrative control of Assam as the eastern frontier of the empire extended, now formed as separate states. While the process of expansion and integration was spread over a century, the disintegration and territorial reorganisation has occurred with in relatively short time. The volume is planned to go into the historical background of the problem with special reference to the fragile nature of the administrative unity given to the erstwhile province of Assam by the British; the partition at Independence and the Question of ethnic identity including the role of language and the demand for reorganisation. It further examines the consequences of partition and reorganization particularly on the social end economic developmental process in the region and the political fall out. Agenda for North East India
Concept Publishing Company Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2002; 8170229383; Hardcover; New; New;
North East India with its large untapped hydel power, mineral resources, virgin forests, sturdy people and vast water resources remain in the backyard of development. In the twenty-first century the crucial challenge facing North East India is how to achieve a balance between economy and ecology in order to ensure sustainable social and economic development preserving the basic cultural matrix, ethical values and equalitarian ethos. This calls for a truly democratic society that seeks to achieve economic efficiency and ecological harmony for the eradication of poverty and promotion of total human welfare. It is being increasingly realized that the pluralistic society has a significant role to play in counterbalancing the tendency to state absolutism. These are some of the crucial areas of social science research to which the papers included in this volume are directed. Research and analysis of population, environment, land, food and food security are issues of vital interest of the problem of qualitative demo-graphic development. For this we need the formulation of the appropriate development paradigm of North East India. The papers included in this volume depict the emerging social milieu of North East India and suggest areas of research for the promotion of the welfare of the people in a strategically vital area, known as North East India. Population Poverty and Environment in North East India
Concept Publishing Company Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2000; 8170227704; Hardcover; New; New;
The papers in this volume deal with the population dynamics, poverty and environment in North East India which are inter-linked. All processes of social and economical development planning must take into account, the demographic dimension, levels of poverty and the physical and social environment in which the people live. The right size of population and the human quality are important factors for social and economic development. The quality of life in terms of infrastructure like road, potable water, health services, education etc. is determined by the assured and required income level. Even in North-East India Tribal areas, the inbuilt environmental defiance mechanism is fast breaking down. The volume analyses and suggests remedies for countering the degrading social situation. The towns are fortresses of wealth surrounded by hungry people, the victims of poverty. The poverty is due to low land-man ratio, dependence of the poor on wage income and their inability to find wage employment throughout the year in the villages. The papers included in this volume are an attempt to study the issues. Printed Pages: 412. 112404

Linguistic Introduction to Sanskrit
Chaukhamba Publications; New Delhi, India; 2006; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New;
This book presents all information related to Vedic Sanskrit and Comparative Philology in very clear terms being largely guided by the author’s own experience at teaching at the Dacca and Calcutta Universities. At present in India the mediaeval commentaries are taught in the name of the Vedas and hardly ant attention is paid to the texts themselves. The students thus, the author believes, go away with the idea that the Vedic Rsis were either ignorant of grammar or did not care to follow the rules. This boo shows how much more complex than Panini’s was the grammar followed by the Rsis, and how much we have to depend on the evidence of other cognate languages for an adequate comprehension of the forms and structure of the Vedic language. The students of Comparative Philology will find in this book a dependable guide to the science through the medium of the Sanskrit language.Printed Pages: 173. 100652
