Towards Personal Excellence: Psychometric Tests and Self-Improvement Techniques for Managers
Response Books; New Delhi, India; 2007; 0761935045; Second Edition; Paperback; New;
From the Foreword by Udai Pareek, ‘Even though the need for self-development and increasing the level of excellence and effectiveness is high, people do not have enough time for self-study, nor for attending courses being offered. Moreover, people may like to go at their own pace, select the time they can find to devote to self-development, and choose the areas more relevant to them at that time. The present volume seems to fulfil these needs—to help the readers to pick up the areas they are more concerned with…. Seema Sanghi has simplified the various concepts and theories in the form of practical hints for increasing excellence of various personal and interpersonal skills. Howsoever busy an individual may be, he or she can use the book to review his/her level of effectiveness, and use the tips to enhance it.’ The second edition of this enormously successful book is packed with more ways to maximize your potential with added sections on self-evaluation. This edition contains more ‘mirror image’ questionnaires covering a wider scope of multiple managerial competencies, including creativity and innovation. The book contains six pilot-tested modules each with a cluster of skills and a self-assessment questionnaire (with response sheets), which enables the reader/user to record individual strengths and weaknesses to keep track of the process of learning. The author covers the following areas: – Managerial Skills – Communication Skills – Group Dynamics Skills – Environment Management Skills – Self-enhancement Powers – Career Planning. Gender, Conflict and Peace in Kashmir: Invisible Stakeholders
Cambridge University Press; New Delhi, India; 2013; 1107041872; Hardcover; New; New;
This book demonstrates that gender is a key component of conflict and peace discourse. The marginalization of women in conflict and peace is all pervasive. Kashmir is a mirror image of this global scenario. Kashmiri women aided the militant movement in significant ways though they did not take part in direct combat. They played key roles to sustain and nourish the movement – as protestors protectors and motivators and facilitators. Their experiences of participation in the conflict however remain subdued by the dominant masculinist discourse. Kashmiri women are excluded from the militancy discourse as contributors as well as from peacemaking discourse as stakeholders. The study interrogates theory and practice of women’s participation in conflict and argues that changed gender-roles during conflict do not necessarily revolutionize socially ascribed norms. The book also examines the experiences of women in sustaining conflict to make a case for their due place in negotiating formal peace.Printed Pages: 196. 101495

Jain Temples of Rajasthan
Indira Gandhi National Centre for the Arts/Abhinav Publications; New Delhi, India; 2001; 8170173485; Hardcover; New; New;
The Jain temples at Dilwa?a in Mount Abu evoke a sense of awe for their sculptural artistry. Unnamed artists who had, for years, created exquisite pieces in ivory, now worked with marble, sculpting ceiling and domes, columns and walls, creating works of unparalleled beauty. They carried forward, and deepened, a rich tradition of temple building in India, with their plethora of images from Indian myths and legends. The most outstanding feature of these temples are the thousand-petalled lotuses that decorate the domes in the ra?gama??apas, signifying a very highly evolved technical and artistic achievement.Some 200 km away from the Mount Abu, in Ranakpur, the Adisvara Temple is an achievement of a different kind. It is renowned for its architectural splendour; a thousand columns that define its wondrous spaces are all unique, as no two are alike.Printed Pages: 221. 101640

On Zhang-Zhung
Paljor Publications/Library of Tibetan Works & Archives; New Delhi, India; 2000; 8186470247; Softcover; New;
The country of Zhang-zhung, the stronghold of the ancient Bon religion, is generally believed to have been situated at the western end of Tibet, in the region around Mount Kailasa. Religious Bon texts handed down to us in Tibetan translations mention the fact that these texts were originally written in the language of Zhang-zhung, but due to the scarcity of material in this language, many scholars tended to dismiss this as a fabrication of the Bonpos.In this Book Professor Hummel revisits the whole issue of Zhang-zhung, concentrating particularly on its language, but also on the actual size and geographical position of this kingdom.The studies presented here bring a host of new, almost provocative ideas, suggesting that Zhang-zhung was a vast confederacy of states stretching all the way from western to north-eastern Tibet, and that its language was in fact no artificial product, tracing its Origins to the eastern Tibetan regions of Si-hia and Mi-nyag. With the help of Zhang-zhung, The Author even sheds new light on the meaning of the old Tibetan kings' names.Printed Pages: 181. 103624

Japanin kutsu: Suomalaiset naislähetit Japanissa 1900-1941
Bookstore Tiedekirja; Finland; 2007; 9517468873; New;
Printed Pages: 353. 114593

Across the Oceans: Development of Overseas Business Information Transmission 1815-1875
Bookstore Tiedekirja; Finland; 2007; 9517469047; New;
In the early 19th century, the only way to transmit information was to send letters across the oceans by sailing ships or inland by horse and coach. The book explains how the rate of information circulation increased many times over as mail systems were developed. Nevertheless, regional differences were huge. While improvements on the most significant trade routes between Europe, the Americas and East India were considered crucial, distant places such as California or Australia had to wait for gold rush to become important enough for regular communications. The growth of passenger services, especially for emigrants, also increased the number of mail sailings. Printed Pages: 459. 115699

Decolonization in South Asia: Meanings of Freedom in Post-independence West Bengal (1947-52)
Orient BlackSwan; New Delhi, India; 2012; 8125047069; Soft Cover; New;
The author, a specialist on the history of modern India, discusses what freedom actually meant to various individuals, communities and political parties, how they responded to it, how they extended its meaning and how in their anxiety to confront the realities of free India, they began to invent new enemies of their newly acquired freedom. By emphasizing the representations of popular mentality rather than the institutional changes brought in by the process of decolonization, he draws attention to other concerns and anxieties that were related to the problems of coming to terms with the newly achieved freedom and the responsibility of devising independent rules of governance that would suit the historic needs of a pluralist nation. Decolonization in South Asia analyses the transitional politics of West Bengal in light of recent developments in post-colonial theory on nationalism, treating the ‘nation’ as a space for contestation, rather than a natural breeding ground for homogeneity in the complex political scenario of post-independence India.Printed Pages: 272. 101940

Decolonisation and the Politics of Transition in South Asia
Orient BlackSwan; New Delhi, India; 2016; 8125062521; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New; 15 x 23 Cm
This volume interrogates the concept of decolonisation, which is often taken to mean a transfer of power from a colonial to an indigenous elite. However, decolonisation involved a much more complex historical experience for the people of the postcolonial nations. It did not necessarily mean a clinical break with the past, but was rather an incomplete, complicated process, as different groups began to seek different meanings of freedom and imagined multiple pathways for their future development. Old nationalisms were questioned and new identities were born, as fresh boundaries were drawn, both geographically and socially.This book captures some of these complexities of the decolonisation process in South Asia—across India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh—by focusing on these uncertainties and debates of the transition period from colonial to the postcolonial. The essays engage with a range of issues related to decolonisation, including electoral systems, forms of political systems, democracy and authoritarianism, economic planning, armed insurrection, ideological consensus and conflict, minority rights and exclusivist politics. A Mirror Greens in Spring
IndiaInk/Roli Books; New Delhi, India; 8186939334; Softcover; New;
It is 1984, and New Delhi is simmering with ethnic strife as anti-Sikh riots erupt after prime minister India Gandhi's assassination. This cataclysmic event serves as the backdrop to the day-to-day ordinariness of an immigrant Bengali family's life. Chhobi, the elder, sensitive and intelligent, is forever trying to rein in beautiful, narcissistic Sonali. Ma, their mother, struggles with her loneliness after being widowed in her thirties; Dida is their feisty grandmother whose indomitable spirit prods the family on during times of adversity; and Dadu, their grandfather, is a man perpetually homesick for his estates, irretrievably lost as borders are redrawn to form Bangladesh. Sonny - rich, handsome and arrogant - enters Sonali's life, only to jilt her. Sonali's thwarted love affair, and a maritime misadventure are the catalysts that alter the predictable pattern of the Bengali family's life and propels its women to find within themselves hitherto unknown strengths - and to evolve and deal with changed circumstances. The story traces the gradual erosion of old values, an acceptance of new identities and, for the grandfather, at last a sense of realization that Delhi is home. Printed Pages: 305. 108473

Music is composed from real life situation and experiences of either sex of the individuals and depicts the total life as well as cultural history of the people of that period. How a Munda perceives, conceptualises and articulates his life experiences ideas and emotions and how he formulates philosophy of life out of his experiences, is a representative example of the pattern and process in music making and its value in tribal society. Musical life of the tribals is full of behavioural activities and interactions with men, on the one hand, and with nature and spirit world, on the other. Kronostaden: Estnässkatans Helsingfors 1640-1721
Bookstore Tiedekirja; Finland; 2016; 9522227072; New;
Kaksi Saksaa ja Suomi: Saksan kysymys Suomen puolueettomuuspolitiikan Haasteena
Bookstore Tiedekirja; Finland; 2003; 9517464657; New;
Printed Pages: 236. 115900

Professori Seppo Hentilä selvittää kirjassaan DDR:n poliittista vaikutusta Suomeen ja suomalaisiin 1960- ja 1970-luvulla. "Kotiryssien" tavoin myös "kotiderkut" olivat innokkaasti solmimassa yhteyksiä eri alojen suomalaisvaikuttajiin. Teoksessa paneudutaan muun muassa puoluesuhteisiin, kansalaisjärjestöjen kanssakäymiseen, asiantuntijoiden tutustumis- ja opintomatkoihin, tutkijavaihtoon, DDR:n tunnustamisliikkeeseen ja itäsaksalaisten Suomessa harjoittamaan propaganda- ja tiedustelutoimintaan. Kansanetiikkaa
Bookstore Tiedekirja; Finland; 2005; 951746780X; New;
The Ministry of Finance: Two hundred years of State-building, Nation-building Crisis Management in Finland
Bookstore Tiedekirja; Finland; 2012; 9522223786; New;
Finland has a long tradition of efficient financial management, starting from the 16th century. In 1809, the country was able to establish her own financial administration. It was a crucial step for Finland’s state formation and marked the beginning of nation building. It was the first time in Finland’s history that all taxes collected from the tax-paying citizens were used to benefit the people themselves. The 19th century was a period of institution building. The Department of Finance was one unit of the Government. In the 20th century, the Ministry of Finance consolidated its position as one of the leading agencies of government. European integration and globalisation have emphasised the importance of well-functioning financial institutions and prudent financial policies. Printed Pages: 262. 114896

Uusi Viron Historia
Bookstore Tiedekirja; Finland; 2017; 9522228389; New;
Bookstore Tiedekirja; Finland; 2013; 9522224111; New;
The Muscovite autocracy was a complex political system which included not only the sovereign, but also his trusted counsellors, who regularly advised the ruler on various matters. This study examines the practise of consultation in a wider historical and cultural context and shows that the relations between the ruler and his counsellors were based on the concepts of Orthodox theology and Muscovite political practise. Suomalais-udmurttilainen Sanakirja
Bookstore Tiedekirja; Finland; 2013; 9525667448; New;
Sanakirja on rinnakkaisteos vuonna 2008 ilmestyneelle Udmurttilais-suomalaiselle sanakirjalle. Toisaalta suomenkielisen käyttäjän on hyvä saada kaikki mahdolliset udmurtin käännösvastineet tietoonsa. 116210

Ambedkar's Philosophy on Religion and Morality
Gyan Books Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2016; 9789351281870; Hardcover; New; New;
Ambedkars philosophical ideas on Religion and Morality would pave the way for practical responses on different ideology in the Indian society. He clearly understood that how deep the religion plays a key role in Indian society. At the same time he explains how effectively religion has changed its form and its role in the present society, for that reason Ambedkar attempts to reformulate religion and morality on the basis of humanity. Since Buddhism is on the similar grounds, he embraced it. Ambedkar, morality is the basic need of humanity, which is good for healthy society. Ambedkar criticized Hinduism for de-linking the morality on basis of religion, so he redefines the notion of religion in terms of reason and scientific method. The redefinition of religion and morality makes him to embrace Buddhism. He equates the concept of Dhamma with morality which gives importance to the treatment of man as a man. Headlines from the Heartland: Reinventing the Hindi Public Sphere
Sage Publications; New Delhi, India; 2007; 0761935800; First Edition; Paperback; New;
In the 1990s, a newspaper revolution began blowing across northern and central India. When literacy levels rose, communications expanded, and purchasing power climbed in these Hindi-speaking states, newspapers followed—picking up readers in small towns and villages. Even while these newspapers surged to the top of national readership charts, they localised furiously in the race for readers. But in this universe of local news, questions arose about what localisation was doing to regional identity and consciousness. Using notes from her pioneering field-study in eight states, Sevanti Ninan brilliantly brings alive India’s ongoing Hindi newspaper revolution, and its impact on politics, administration and society. Set against the socio-economic and political changes in the countryside, it is a remarkable story of how journalism flowered in unexpected and unorthodox ways, and colourful media marketing unfurled in the Hindi heartland. The Iranian Nuclear Crisis: A Memoir
KW Publishers; New Delhi, India; 2013; 9789381904817; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New;
The first detailed Iranian account of the diplomatic struggle between Iran and the international community, The Iranian Nuclear Crisis: A Memoir begins in 2002, when news about Iran’s clandestine uranium enrichment and plutonium production facilities emerged, and takes the reader into Tehran’s deliberations as its leaders wrestle with internal and external adversaries. Seyed Hossein Mousavian, previously the head of the Foreign Relations Committee of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council and spokesman for Tehran’s nuclear negotiating team, provides readers with intimate knowledge of Iran’s interactions with the International Atomic Energy Agency and global powers. Mousavian’s personal story comes alive as he vividly recounts his arrest in 2007 on charges of espionage. is and other dramatic episodes of diplomatic missions tell much about the author and the swirling dynamics of Iranian politics and diplomacy—undercurrents that must be understood now more than ever. As intense debate continues over the direction of Iran’s nuclear program, Mousavian weighs the likely efects of military strikes, covert action, sanctions, and diplomatic engagement, along with their potential to resolve the nuclear crisis.Printed Pages: 612. 104296

Indian Secularism: A Social and Intellectual History, 1890-1950
Permanent Black; New Delhi, India; 2008; 8178242125; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New; 14 Cms x 22 Cms
Secularism has been the subject of much debate. Scholars have argued that recent Hindu nationalism is the symptom of a crisis of Indian secularism and have blamed this on a resurgence of religion or communalism. Shabnum Tejani argues here for a more complex and historically informed understanding. Her book is a history of how the idea of secularism emerged in India. She shows that the study of secularism in India has been circumscribed by the opposition in which it exists with communalism. Scholars have treated these categories as reified wholes. Consequently, analyses of secularism have obscured more than they have revealed. Indian Secularism approaches this question from a wholly new perspective. Beginning in the late nineteenth century and ending with the ratification of the constitution in 1950, it examines the social, political, and intellectual genealogies of secularism and communalism. The book examines how secularism came to be bound up with what it meant to legitimately call oneself ‘Indian’ and shows why this concept’s genealogy is so imbued with the language of religion. It argues that the emergence of the category of secularism in India had less to do with creating an ethics of tolerance than with a formulation of nationalism that provided a counterpoint to challenges posed by Muslim and Untouchable communities. Through a detailed reconstruction of six historical moments, which include the emergence of religious movements and key constitutional debates, Tejani shows that the ideology of secularism that emerged in 1950 had its conceptual preconditions in histories of nationalism, communalism, and British colonial discourses. She also argues that the distinction between religion and caste that has characterized debates on Indian secularism is false. Rather than being distinct from community and caste, nationalism and communalism, liberalism and democracy, Indian secularism was a relational category that emerged at the nexus of all these. This book will interest students of Indian democracy, politics, and history, as well as of political philosophy and the sociology of caste. Printed Pages: 320. 031532

Bhopal Connections: Vignettes of Royal Rule
Roli Books; New Delhi, India; 2017; 9789351941972; First Edition; Softcover; New;
Founded by Dost Mohammed Khan, an Afghan-Pashtun soldier in the Mughal Army, Bhopal became a princely state in 1818 as a result of the Anglo-Bhopal treaty between East India Company and the Nawab of Bhopal.Between 1819 and 1926, Bhopal had the distinction of being ruled by four begums. Bhopal Connections: Vignettes of Royal Rule takes us on a journey of dramatic events, the larger-than-life characters, scandals and social norms that are part of this princely state’s history and culture, fashioned particularly by the reign of these four successive women rulers. Some of these events were game changers, while others saw social change through family alliances.From a peek into Bhopal’s political, cultural and familial history to contemporary anecdotes, Shaharyar Muhammed Khan, grandson of the last ruling Nawab of Bhopal, recreates life and times of the rulers of Bhopal. Conquest and Community: The Afterlife of Warrior Saint (Ghazi Miyan)
Orient BlackSwan/Permanent Black; New Delhi, India; 2015; 8125059679; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New; 14 x 22 Cm
Conquest and Community tells the story of the Indo-Turkic warrior saint Ghazi Miyan and his influential cult in the Gangetic plains. A purported nephew of Mahmud of Ghazni, Ghazi Miyan was supposedly martyred in holy war against Hindu kings near Bahraich in modern-day Uttar Pradesh in 1034 CE. Conspicuously absent from contemporary Persian chronicles about his famous uncle, he is, nevertheless, the subject of glowing hagiographies from the seventeenth century onwards, as well as an oral folkloric tradition, which thrives to this day. His cult continues draw pilgrims of varying castes, both Muslim and Hindu, from all over northern India to his shrine in Bahraich. Shahid Amin studies the history and growth of this cult and its manifestations in the tales people tell, the ballads they sing, the shrines they visit and the hagiographies they have written. He also addresses the disquiet and criticism the cult has provoked in both orthodox Hindu and Muslim quarters, for Ghazi Miyan is a complex, sometimes troubling figure, an amalgam of different traditions and tropes that do not always coexist easily. He features in text and folklore both as a pious iconoclast, who smashes Hindu idols and also as a staunch protector of cows and cowherds, a putative brother to Hindu women, and a connoisseur of things Indic from pan to the humble mahua tree.Printed Pages: 348 with b/w illustrations & Tables. 102278

Wisdom Wide and Deep: A Practical Handbook for Mastering Jhana and Vipassana
Wisdom Publications; Boston, USA; 2011; 086171623X; First Edition; Paperback; New;
A comprehensive, authoritative presentation of the deeply refined Buddhist science of meditation, from an inspiring modern meditation master Wisdom Wide and Deep is an extended introduction to an in-depth training that emphasizes the application of concentrated attention to profound and liberating insight. With calm, tranquility, and composure established through a practical experience of jhana or deep concentration, meditators are able to halt the seemingly endless battle against hindrances, eliminate distraction, and facilitate a penetrative insight into the subtle nature of matter and mind. It was for this reason the Buddha frequently exhorted his students, ?Develop concentration, one who is concentrated understands things as they really are.” This book, Wisdom Wide and Deep, follows and amplifies the teachings in Shaila Catherine’s acclaimed first book, Focused and Fearless: A Meditator’s Guide to States of Deep Joy, Calm, and Clarity. Readers will learn to this profound stability to the meticulous discernment, analysis, and contemplation of reality as it is actually occurring and learn how to sustain an in-depth examination of the nuances of mind and matter to unravel deeply conditioned patterns that perpetuate suffering. This is a profoundly practical guide, the fully detailed manual for the mind sure to become a trusted companion to many inner explorers. Printed Pages: 553. 037523
