The Sacred Sorrow of Sparrows: A Collection of Lives
Niyogi Books; New Delhi, India; 2017; 9789385285684; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New;
Across lives, cities, and continents, melancholy and its tentacles inhabit spaces that are often left unexplored. Through ten stories and ten main protagonists, this book paints a portrait of the universal emotion that strikes the deepest and lingers the longest-sorrow.A nuanced narrative of the eternal human existence, this collection embraces light, laughter, hope, and that silently pulsating craving called love, delivering a communal meditation on mortal failings and human persistence.The stories traverse the length and breadth of the world picking up a train of melody from the sonorous sound of the Bosphorus to the resounding refrain of the Qawwali, from the quiet streets of Isfahan to a crowded city in Japan, from two lovers fraught with desire in Bombay to one man's spiritual awakening in Lebanon. Each story, mired by the undercurrent of simple occurrences and profound epiphanies, also forms an unwitting part of a Sufi's journey as he navigates the world in his mystic inquiry of the unknown. The Last Song of Dusk
Penguin; New Delhi, India; 2004; 0670057681; Second Edition; Hard Cover; New; New; 13 Cms x 20 Cms
Pirouetting between laughter and tears, Siddharth Dhanvant Shanghvi's technicolour debut tells the story of four extraordinary lives. Of Anuradha Gandharva, gifted with astonishing beauty and magical songs; of her husband, Vardhmaan, struggling with secret losses; of Nandini, a deviously alluring artist, with a penchant for panthers and walking on water; and of Shloka, the Gandharvas' delicate, disturbingly silent child. As their fates unravel in an old villa in 1920s' India, they learn to navigate the ever-changing landscape of love, and in doing so encounter a host of eccentrics: Mr Bunkusdaas, the father of Bollywood cinema; Stella Dimm, `England's first ever Tit girl'; Libya Dass, rarely seen out of her porcelain bathtub; and Percival Worthington, the aristocratically limp son of the governor of Bombay, on whom Nandini rashly sets her sights. The Last Song of Dusk is a tale of exquisite friendships, immense sacrifices and dangerous desires. Told with tenderness and with dazzling wit, it will haunt you long after you have turned the final page. Printed Pages: 304. 004419

Textual Correction of Narasimha Purana with other Apuranas and Sanskrit Texts
Nag Publishers; Delhi, India; 1997; 8170813182; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New;
The Narasirhha Purana has not yet been critically edited. The Narasirhha Purana as available in print at present consists of 68 chapters, but the presence of the anecdote of the Narasithha-Caturadasi-Ttrata in Hemadri's Caturvargacintamani (1270 A.D.) and Ayodhya-tirtha-prasamsa as found out in four manuscripts by Dr. Umakanta Chaturvedi suggest that there was undoubtedly in existence a somewhat larger text of the Narasirhha Purana than the printed text available at present. This monograph "Textual Correlation of the Narasirhha Purana with other Puranas and Sanskrit Texts", shows the textual borrowing of the Narasirhha Purana from divergent sources, and it is presented to the scholarly world with the hope that it would be of much assistance in the critical edition and reconstruction of the Narasirhha Purana in future.Printed Pages: 126. 103936

With Great Truth & Regard: A Story of the Typewriter in India
Godrej/Roli Books; New Delhi, India; 2016; 8193274008; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New; 23 x 25 Cm
The story of the typewriter in India is a story of change and empowerment. It became a symbol of modernity in the workplace and, unwittingly, the typewriter also became an instrument of official power, with the typist standing between citizens and high ranking government officials. Until the 1960s, this story was shaped by manufacturers who used foreign technology and ruled the Indian market – until Godrej decided to persevere against all odds with the design and manufacture of the all-Indian typewriter that would eventually go on to become a market leader. When the last manual typewriter rolled out of the Godrej factory in 2009, there was much reminiscing about the era of typewriters that had come to an end. To bring to life the history of that era, Godrej Archives decided to pay a tribute to the machine and everything it meant to Indian society. With the help of a vast in-house archival collection, as well as anecdotes and stories gathered from across India, Godrej Archives presents to you With Great Truth and Regard, the story of the typewriter in India. The Kacharis (Bodo)
Low Price Publications/D.K. Publishers Distributors Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2010; 8175365048; Hardcover; New; New;
The book deals with the most aboriginal races of Assam - the Bodos of the Kachari flock. They are cheery, good natured, semi-savage folk, candid, simple, trustful but incorrigibly disrespectful, according to notions of Indian good manners.The book is, primarily, a monograph treating of that branch of the Kachari race which lives in scattered hamlets among the foothills of the Himalayas in Assam and Bhutan, inter-mixed with the people from the plains who have intruded into what was once their undisputed home. Their own names for their race is Boro or Bodo (the o has the sound of the English o in hot) The book has an interest and importance from an ethnological point of view, which are perhaps disguised by the author`s characteristically modest estimate of his task and of his power of dealing with it.The book speaks of the characteristics, physical and moral. Origin and Historic summary of the semi-savage Bodos. Further more, details are given about their social and Domestic life, their laws and customs, their religion, folk-lore, traditions and superstitions by the author who lived. Printed. Eurasian Mythology in the Tibetan Epic of Ge-sar
Paljor Publications/Library of Tibetan Works & Archives; New Delhi, India; 1998; 8186470204; First Edition; Softcover; New;
Ge-sar is the most extraordinary Tibetan legendary figure and remains, despite various unsuccessful attempts to tie him down into a Context of historical reality, a great Mythological character.The figure of Ge-sar (the name is modelled on the western Cacsar-Kaiser) has served as a repository of traditions that, through the corridor of the Eurasian steppe belt, REACH back into the world of Germanic and Greek legends and into Megalithic religious beliefs.The hero Ge-sar, sent down from heaven and returned thereto, has indicated in the course of his eventful journey on Earth how on the occasion of his return the hope for a reign of justice and peace and the striving for salvation and liberation will be fulfilled. Thus Ge-sar is both hero and saviour at once.Utilizing the Tibetan versions of the epic, Professor Hummel provides us with a wealth of mythological, legendary and folkloric motifs which over the course of centuries sedimented around the initial crystallization kernel. He thus manages to bring to life one of the most fascinating legends of world literature.Printed Pages: 127. 103626

Maritime Archaeology and Shipwrecks off Goa
Kaveri Book Service; New Delhi, India; 2014; 817479140X; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New;
Among the ports and harbours of the west coast of India, Goa occupies a strategic position whilst relatively good harbours have made it a centre of maritime trade for much of its history. Goa was one of the most important entrepots on the west coast of India. Maritime interaction of Goa with the rest of the India as well other parts of the world is well documented from the early centuries of the Christian era. Over the centuries, ports of Goa declined owing to siltation, foreign attack, then new ports were established and maritime trade continued. The location of Goa suited the Portuguese from every angle so they fought against Adil Shah and conquered and ruled Goa up to 1961. During these periods several ships have been wrecked in Goa waters either due to naval warfare, unskilled navigation or other reasons.In order to reconstruct the maritime history of Goa both onshore and offshore explorations have been carried out and the present work is the outcome of the exploration. Moreover, it was for this reason that the first shipwreck exploration in Indian waters was carried out in Goa waters. In course of underwater exploration, shipwrecks have been found off Sunchi Reef, St Georges’ Reef and Amee Shoals, Sail Rock and Grande Island. The Sunchi Reef shipwreck is the oldest wreck so far surveyed in Indian waters and the first Portuguese wreck until now investigated. Coastal Geomorphology and Seabed topography of Goa has been recorded while undertaking shipwreck studies. In addition to shipwrecks, stone anchors have been documented in Goa waters and Chandor, Gopakapatana and Old Goa, the port sites of Goa have been explored. In separate chapters, a comprehensive report of analysis of elephant tusks and hippopotamus teeth recovered from Sunchi Reef shipwreck and the anatomical analysis of wooden stocks of iron anchors retrieved from Aguada bay have been included.Printed Pages: 221. 104147

Maritime Contacts of the Past: Deciphering Connections Amongst Communities
Kaveri Book Service; New Delhi, India; 2015; 8192624439; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New;
Prior to the commencement of maritime archaeological studies, many amateur divers, fishermen and academicians had recovered numerous artefacts from the seabed, to be either published, showcased, exhibited or sold. The importance and aesthetic value of the artefacts were understood by the scholars and the first academic research of maritime archaeology commenced in the Mediterranean Sea sometime after 1950. Moreover, maritime archaeology was also introduced in the curriculum of some universities and colleges in the 19th century. Now maritime archaeology is swiftly developing because of the availability of new technological advancements that allow archaeologists and oceanographers to explore deeper depths of the ocean bed which were earlier unapproachable. As in other countries, maritime archaeological studies were initiated in India in the year 1983, onshore and offshore explorations in the waters along the west and east coasts of India have been undertaken and remains of submerged ports, shipwrecks, stone anchors and traditional boatbuilding have been documented. But many scholars, researchers and students of South Asia, Southeast Asia and adjoining regions are not well informed on the recent research and advances in the field of Maritime Archaeology in comparison to other parts of the world. Therefore, it is proposed to bring out a special volume on 'Maritime Contacts of the Past: Deciphering Connections amongst communities' that would undoubtedly enhance the knowledge of the scholars and researchers as well. Scholars of different countries involved in this research were approached for contribution and 31 wide ranging articles related to Maritime Archaeology cover the region from the Mediterranean Sea to the Indian Ocean, from the North Pacific to the South Atlantic Ocean.Printed Pages: 802. 104148

Shipwrecks Around the World: Revelations of the Past
Delta/Kaveri Book Service; New Delhi, India; 2015; 8192624447; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New;
In recent years more people and institutes have realised the importance of our maritime past and the need to save the remains from the ravages of time and illegal activities through recently developed tools and scientific methods of maritime archaeology. The developed scientific techniques have helped to make maritime archaeological studies more systematic. And now it is possible for archaeologists to reconstruct in detail the daily lives onboard, commerce and technology from findings such as cargoes, personal belongings and ship remains. 'Shipwrecks around the World: Revelations of the past', covers the story of many shipwrecks from the 15th century onwards, from the Pacific to the Mediterranean, from the north Atlantic to south Atlantic, from Europe to Australia, each shipwreck encapsulating a moment in time and thus illuminating an entire era. The book contains 35 significant and scholarly articles written by specialists involved in the scientific survey of shipwrecks. In addition to papers on shipwrecks, there are papers on conservation of shipwreck finds, and UNESCO Field School on Underwater Cultural Heritage 2009-2011, Thailand, capacity building in the Asian and Pacific Region, and the 2001 UNESCO Convention on the Protection of the Underwater Cultural Heritage. The book contains illustrations of lost ships, drawings supported by original maps and a good number of both inland and underwater photographs of artefacts and antiquities that were recovered and documented in the course of exploration and excavation. Undoubtedly this book will fascinate, enhance the knowledge of researchers and scholars and provide them with an insight into shipwrecks. Shipwrecks around the World also provides one with a positive look at future sites and an exciting glimpse into deepwater shipwreck findings.Printed Pages: 847. 104157

School and Choice: An ethnography of a primary school with bilingual Classes
Bookstore Tiedekirja; Finland; 2010; 9525401529; New;
This is a study of the phenomenon of school choice, analysing the thinking that it encourages about teachers, parents, and pupils, and how this influences educational practices. It develops an ethnographic study of a Finnish primary school that has introduced specialised classes in foreign language learning in English, selecting pupils for these classes. It examines discourses of inclusion, and how these are connected to notions of nationed, ethnicised and classed differences in school. The study is informed by feminist poststructural theorisations concerning subject formation and the production of social difference. Printed Pages: 436. 114864

Aino Kallas
Bookstore Tiedekirja; Finland; 2017; 9522224243; New;
Aino Kallaksesta on muotoutunut mielikuva vahvana, itsekeskeisenäkin taiteilijana. Esiin nousee monia ajan kulttuurielämän keskeisiä nimiä Hella Wuolijoesta V. A. Koskenniemeen.FT Silja Vuorikuru (s. 1977) on kirjallisuudentutkija, tietokirjailija ja kirjallisuuden tuntiopettaja Helsingin yliopistossa. Kulttuuripolitiikan liikkuvat rajat: Kulttuuri suomalaisessa yhteiskuntapolitiikassa
Bookstore Tiedekirja; Finland; 2015; 9522226580; New;
Kulttuuripolitiikkaa on totuttu pitämään selvärajaisena toimintana, jossa ohjaillaan julkisia kulttuuripalveluja ja taiteen edellytyksiä. Ajatus on peräisin aikakaudelta, jolloin poliittinen puuttuminen kulttuurielämään oli tavallista. Nykyisin kulttuuripolitiikassa on yhä vaikeampaa havaita kulttuurin poliittisuutta. Printed Pages: 251. 114760

Yiddish in Helsinki: Study of a Colonial Yiddish Dialect and Culture
Bookstore Tiedekirja; Finland; 2004; 9519380639; New;
This dissertation concentrates on various aspects of the Yiddish dialect and culture in Helsinki. The monograph is divided into two main parts: Historical and Sociolinguistic Perspectives and Linguistic Study. The aims of the first part are to investigate the origin of Helsinki Jewry and their Yiddish and the manifestations of Yiddish in the social and cultural life of the community. The period of time dealt with in this study spans from the first heders of 1860s to the Yiddish articles in the Jewish press of Helsinki in the mid-1950s. The linguistic part of this study investigates the relation of Helsinki Yiddish to Yiddish dialects, chiefly North-Eastern Yiddish sub-dialects, and the way in which the co-territorial languages, i.e. Finland Swedish, Finnish, Russian and Baltic German, influenced the local variant of Yiddish. The general description of the dialect has been compiled on the basis of information gathered from interviews conducted during field-work in Helsinki and Turku. Printed Pages: 253. 116389

Secretary or General?: The UN Secretary-General in World Politics
Cambridge University Press; Cambridge, UK; 2007; 0521699584; First Edition; Hardcover; Brand New; Brand New; 155 x 230 Mm
The Secretary-General of the United Nations is a unique figure in world politics. At once civil servant, the world's diplomat, lackey of the UN Security Council, and commander-in-chief of up to a hundred thousand peacekeepers, he or she depends on states for both the legitimacy and resources that enable the United Nations to function. The tension between these roles - of being secretary or general - has challenged every incumbent. This book brings together the insights of senior UN staff, diplomats and scholars to examine the normative and political factors that shape this unique office with particular emphasis on how it has evolved in response to changing circumstances such as globalization and the onset of the ‘war on terror’. The difficulties experienced by each Secretary-General reflect the profound ambivalence of states towards entrusting their security, interests or resources to an intergovernmental body. • Coinciding with the first changeover of Secretary-General in 10 years, this book will shape discussion within the UN and the public domain as a new team assumes office after a period of crisis • Contributions from a key group of former diplomats, UN officials and academics including people who have worked closely with the Secretary-General brings key insights into the theory and practice of the United Nations • Expands on different aspects of the Secretary-General's role allowing both depth of analysis and some real world policy prescriptions Contents Foreword Kofi A. Annan; Introduction Simon Chesterman; Part I. Defining and Refining the Job Description: 1. The evolution of the Secretary-General Brian E. Urquhart; 2. Indian Statutory Commission: Report of the Indian Statutory Commission, 2 vols
Concept Publishing Company Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 1988; 8172680635; Hardcover; New; New;
To make proposals for further advancement towards the goal of responsible government, the Government of India Act, 1919 provided that ten years should elapse, and then a Royal Commission would be appointed for the purpose of inquiring into the working of the system of government, the growth of education, and the development of representative institution, in British India, and matters connected therewith, and the Commission shall report as to whether, and to what extent, it is desirable to establish the principle of responsible government, or to extend, modify, or restrict the degree of responsible government then existing their in, including the question whether the establishment of Second Chambers of the local legislatures is, or is not desirable. Though the commission was to have been set up at the expiration of ten years it was established at the end of seven years of the functioning of the Act of 1919. The Indian Commission, widely known as the Simon Commission after the name of its Chairman, Johan Simon submitted its report in two volumes. The first volume made a survey of the political constitutional, financial, education a, social and administrative development in India and second volume was devoted to its recommendations. The Simon Commission favoured introduction of responsible government and federalism in India and renewed the solemn pledge of the British people with regard to the progressive realisation of responsible government in British India. This reprint of report of the Indian Statutory Commission comes at a time when the country is celebrating fortieth anniversary of independence and there is keen interest in the pre independence era. 30969 Simon Denyer
Rogue Elephant
Bloomsbury; London, UK; 1408857057; Hardcover; New;
At the beginning of the twenty-first century, India seemed to stand on the brink of an exciting new era. Second only to China as the fastest growing major economy in the world, gleaming shopping malls were being built around the country to service a rapidly expanding middle class, and mobile phones were reaching even the remotest villages. The installation of Manmohan Singh as Prime Minister in 2004 seemed to promise more good times ahead. Singh had unleashed ‘shining’ India’s potential more than a decade before as finance minister, introducing the liberalising economic reforms that had set the country on a new course towards prosperity. Yet a decade later, the dream has crumbled. A series of corruption scandals has badly tarnished the nation’s image and undermined its self-confidence, while the economy has slowed and violence against women has dominated the headlines. Their country is no longer ‘shining’ and Indians are left wondering where the magic has gone. Reporting from across India, meeting activists, farmers, factory and office workers and media figures, and interviewing influential political leaders including Narendra Modi, Rahul Gandhi and Arvind Kejriwal, Denyer exposes the battles taking place all across the nation between powerful vested interests and those trying to foster change. By delving into many of the country’s most troublesome issues, from gender relations to education, from corruption to populist politics, he analyses the Indian malaise and, equally important, discovers signs of new and vigorous life and a deep desire for change. If the world’s largest democracy can control the greed, corruption and bad governance that bedevils it, its future may indeed be truly dazzling. Printed Pages: 448. 037851

Modernity of Sanskrit
Permanent Black; New Delhi, India; 2009; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New; 15 x 23 Cm
This book starts with the premise that the fate of Indian modernity is crucially linked to available readings of the Indian past. Today we witness, Sawhney contends, the near-total appropriation of Sanskrit texts by Hindu nationalism—an appropriation that has significantly diminished the power and richness of these texts. The Modernity of Sanskrit challenges this appropriation in two ways. It suggests, first, that a literary approach which resists narrowed interpretation can reveal moments of tension, fragility, and ambivalence in even the most canonical texts. Second, it turns to the complex work of writers such as Rabindranath Tagore, M. K. Gandhi, Mohan Rakesh, and Dharamvir Bharati to demonstrate that new readings of Sanskrit texts played a decisive role in shaping modern thought in India. Through close readings of selected works, this book proposes that modern commentaries and adaptations of Sanskrit texts also became a charged site for postcolonial reflections on politics, ethics, theatre, and poetry. Travels to Europe: Self and Other in Bengali Travel Narratives, 1870-1910
Orient BlackSwan; New Delhi, India; 2005; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New;
This work examines in detail the world of travelogues of a highly interesting culture-universe: the Bengali bhadralok. A travelogue is usually a crucial political/aesthetic text. Its very fabric is structured in space and power - it creates, relates, compares and contrasts spaces and powers. Bengalis travelling to Europe in the colonial period felt compelled to produce such texts. An analysis of these works from a historian's angle provides crucial windows to the colonised mind striving for self-definition. Trailokyanath Mukherjee, Romesh Chandra Dutt, Krishnabhabini Das, Swami Vivekananda, Rabindranath Tagore and other travellers aimed to demystify the myth of Europe by establishing physical contact. Their depictions of the reality of the colonial metropolis served as acts of self-assertion, dislocating England from its position of centrality. Simonti Sen studies in detail the conflicted narratives of minds that aimed to reconcile a Western education with an incipient sense of national self. In doing so, she raises issues regarding national definition which are as relevant today as they were a century ago. This work would appeal to readers interested in the history of India and, in particular, of Bengal; it would also appeal to those involved in literature and cultural studies. The Heart of Jainism
Munshiram Manoharlal Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2013; 8121501229; Reprint; Hardcover; New; New; 15 x 23 Cm
Jainism, the most fascinating and complex among the Indian religions, offers an interesting field of enquiry for the scholar of comparative religions. Originating as a heterodox sect in the sixth century BC it has added considerably to the development of Indian thought and culture while maintaining to this day its distinct identity and philosophy as a religion par excellence of love and kindness. The history of Jainism attains a greater significance, in particular, for, and its non-competitive character, it was able to stand on its own during the various stages of its history. Mrs. Sinclair Stevenson, in her present work, The Heart of Jainism has analyzed these significant detail. While tracing the origin of Jainism to the revolt of the Kshatriya against Brahmanical exclusiveness and the ritual-ridden structure, she has shown how it sustained itself through the course of its history. This, in her view, became possible because in Jainism the body of ascetics was provided adequately by its lay community and the permeation of strong Hindu influences. In this painstaking work, Mrs. Stevenson has examined, in clear details, not only the history and development of Jainism, but has also described Jainism as it is practised today. Her exposition of the Nine Categories of the Fundamental Truth of the Jainas and their subdivisions is distinguished by a careful and valuable analysis and she has gone into the details of examining the Jaina belief in existence and other allied terms as they mean to the Jainas themselves. She has also described in detail the Jaina worship and religious customs, the various ceremonies observed during the life-time by Jaina-both the layman and the ascetic, mythology, architecture and literature. A detailed treatment has been given to the analysis of the Nine Categories and the twenty-four Tirthankaras in the two Appendices at the end of this work. Marked by its vividness of detail derived from a close and personal knowledge and study, The Heart of Jainism should prove to be of great interest to the scholars of religion. Aspects of Speech in Vedic Ritual
Aryan Books International; New Delhi, India; 1996; 8173050783; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New; 15 x 22 Cm
The Indian mantra has evoked great curiosity and has invited studies on it from many scholars. The mantra as such though efficacious by itself, is important more for the principle of Highest Speech, underlying it. The present Book deals with the concept of speech and its various aspects as seen in the Vedic ritual. Many ideas occurring in the Vedic ritual, get correlated when once the various aspects of speech are taken into account. These aspects of speech include not only the rc-s, yajus-es, saman-s stotra-s and sastra-s but also metres, silpa-s, mystic utterances such as the word Svaha, Vasat, Hin, Om, the three Vyahrti-s (Bhuh, Bhuvah and Svah), Sloka-s and gatha-s, which are the articulate forms of speech, as well as singing and playing on instruments, which are the articulate forms of speech, as well as singing and playing on instruments, which are the inarticulate forms of speech. With her thousand-fold 'progeny' speech plays a major role in the Vedic ritual. The book takes note of this manifold 'progeny' of speech and the belief connected with it.Printed Pages: 292. 100243

"Narratives or mythical accounts from Veda to Puranas, at every place, support the issues occurring in the multi-faceted ancient Indian tradition. For every change, though slight, in the ancient Indian society, and for a new face-lift of the society, in the sphere of code of conduct, these narratives figure as arthavada, and have functional value. To know the real purport of these narratives is the right key to unfold the fine synthesis of ‘Old’ and ‘New’, that has made the Indian Man. 110409

Tutkimukseen on volyymin suuresta kasvusta huolimatta jäänyt ilmeisiä katvealueita ja vähän tutkittuja aihepiirejä.
