The Search for Purpose and Meanings: In Life and From Death
Low Price Publications/D.K. Publishers Distributors Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 8173862826; Softcover; New;
We identify ourselves and are attached to material possessions and physical comforts. Some of us take materialism to be more important than spiritual or ethical values. We have accepted this temporary condition to be final and as a consequence live purposeless and meaningless lives. A poet has aptly said that we can pass our night laughing and joking, but do not know about the morning. Life is transient, and nobody is immortal. We don`t have to push death to the farthest extremes of our consciousness. It can be a good reminder to bring back to our consciousness what is really important in life to us.This book will help you to find your mission in life, give meaning to your existence, and guide you to realise your true self. 110926

Ladakh: A Photo Travelogue
Niyogi Books; New Delhi, India; 2015; 9789385285028; First Edition; Softcover; New; 23 x 31 Cm Sohini Sen
Unlike any other book so far published on Ladakh — and quite possibly unlike any other travel book published till date — here is a travel story told through high-resolution colour photographs laid out in a comic-strip format. Two lady travellers arrive in Leh one local summer morning. In the course of their journey through Ladakh, they get to know about the war between ‘Nanak Lama’ and a demon and watch masked lamas offer a comic interlude amid serious rituals at the Phyang Monastery festival. On their way to Nubra Valley via Khardung Pass (altitude: 18,380 ft), the travellers meet animals with an identity crisis, and a donkey who will never lend its owner an ear again. In the valley, a 32-metre tall statue of Maitreya Buddha shares the limelight with double-humped camels. The ladies are bowled over by their names. The journey to Pangong Lake (altitude: 13,900 ft) and back has quite a few highpoints — Shey Palace, Thiksey and Hemis monasteries, the Chang Pass, and the curious case of the frozen marmot. A nomadic stay in a tent by the enchanting Pangong with its ever-changing colours reveals a considerable bird population, some with horns on their heads. The Tso Moriri Wetlands combine the beauty of the Lake Districts and the ruggedness of the Wild West. Almost 250 km from Leh, Tso Moriri lake (altitude: 15,075 ft) is visited by very few tourists. Korzok village near the lake helps the ladies peek into the lives of Changpa nomads who do not let the grass grow under their feet. The same cannot be said of their sheep. With its fascinating subject, over 400 crisp photos, and the easy, humorous writing style, this book will appeal immensely to casual tourists, serious travellers, even those keen on armchair travelling.Printed Pages: 96. 102444

Changes in the field of obligation and necessity in contemporary British English
Bookstore Tiedekirja; Finland; 2015; 9519040528; New;
This book investigates semi-modal NEED TO and its semantic variation in Present-day British English. This topic is particularly relevant today, since the use of semi-modals, such as NEED TO, has increased in the field of obligation and necessity, while the frequencies of core modals such as MUST and NEED have decreased. The link of modal change with the process of democratization, and the way the semi-modals offer a less authoritarian way of obliging, present an interesting background for a corpus-based sociolinguistic study. The primary data enables the exploration of NEED TO across variables such as real time, medium, the speaker variables of age, gender and social class, and a number of spoken registers. The results of the five studies in this volume indicate that the functions of NEED TO resemble more and more those of core modals: particularly the directive obligation uses are on the rise. Eco-Theology and the Scriptures: A Revisit of Christian Responses (Christian Heritage Rediscovered: 10)
Christian World Imprints/B.R. Publishing Corporation; New Delhi, India; 2014; 9789351480198; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New;
The book is a special endeavor for readers of any sector to enable them to reread the Biblical Texts entirely from non-traditional Ecological perspectives and motivate them to join hands with the people who have genuine concern for the Creation.Starting with the more cautious attitude of many countries shown at the `Rio + 20' Conference and comparing them with the heady promises made at the Rio Earth Summit in 1992, the Author shows that for many modern economies, implementation of `Green' movements has become a hard task as the issue of eradication of poverty comes into conflict and in that, the latter often wins. So, the question is left with these economies to decide whether they want to head towards Green Economy, or Great Economy, or Big Economy.He boldly addresses the Colonial character of Christianity imposed on the Indian sub-continent, which stressed the dualist concept of the Earth and Heaven, which puts emphasis on the salvation of the soul rather than that of Creation. The Author has tried to show linkage between Colonialism and Environmental damage, he further proposes for the review of inherited mindset of Indian Christians, that has become indifferent towards the Ecological Problems).He then charts the development of Indian Christian Theology and its great thinkers with particular reference to the second half of the 20th century and proposes a complete review for its deconstruction and replacement with a sound Biblical and Theological Methodology.This informative and thoughtful work also deals with Socio-Economic and Historical subjects and is thus meant for Ecologists, Historians, Economists, Christian Laity, Church Clergies, and Students & Researchers. An ordinary person will be left less informed without having read the book.Printed Pages: 328. 106411

Durga Rahasya: A Key to the Eternal Feminine
Munshiram Manoharlal Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2001; 812151035X; First Edition; Hard Cover; New; New; 14 Cms x 22 Cms
An initiate of the late Swami Venkatesananda, Durga Rahasya builds on the insights vouchsafed by him. It brings out the cosmological, anthropological and existential meaning of the text via the three tales. The Introduction unravels the stories syntactically together with the lauds in a relaxed semiotic rhythm, supplementing with a commentary cultural and trans-cultural in five brief chapters enabling insights on the Eternal Feminine to the contemporary reader. The transcreation in a class by itself done by a poet steeped in Durga symbology as a sahridaya reader rounds off the Durga Rahasya. The book should interest any intellegent reader in addition to indologists and psychologists and the initiates. It is a handmade book, free from needless jargon. It stands apart from any other book on the subject by vitue of its freshness and interdisciplinary rangings. Printed Pages: 130. 017566

Warfare in Ancient India: In Theory and Practice
D.K. Printworld (P) Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2014; 8124607338; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New; 15 x 23 Cm
Differing from the existing studies on the warfare of ancient India; Warfare in Ancient India: In Historical Outline is a comprehensive study of the defence policies, construction of forts, arms and ammunitions, commissariat, the espionage system, the rules of aggression and defence, the technical matters and war ethics, based upon a thorough comprehension of Sanskrit and Sanskritic sources. This being done based on the existing and newly-explored sources. It also analyses the diplomatic and economic factors in aggressive designs, one of the major elements of the political history of early India. This volume partially deals with the activities of the Indo-Aryans and their continuous struggle for survival against hostile environment in Indus Valley and their expansion towards the east along the major rivers of north India, leading to frequent invasions and attacks. Thus came the warlike traits of some major Vedic deities, ancient battles, arms and armour, chariots, forts, arrays, Jain war canons, and major weapons cited in the Mahabharata, Shilappadikaram, Manasollasa, Kural, etc. as the main focus of the book. It also vividly addresses the war policies and tactics enunciated by Kautilya in Arthashastra and Manu in Manu-Smriti, and differentiations in their views on few aspects. The inevitable factors that led to wars — survival, and domination and economic exploitation — are also well dealt. The book should enthuse the interests and spirit of all those who are into the study and research of history, warfare and ancient Indian culture mainly from the Vedic viewpoint.Printed Pages: 308. 100504

Witches, Tea Plantations, and Lives of Migrant Laborers in India
Cambridge University Press; New Delhi, India; 2013; 9789382993452; Hardcover; New; New;
Bringing together a holistic theoretical perspective drawing from sociology anthropology and postcolonial history the author argues that witchcraft accusations among the adivasi worker communities in the tea plantations of West Bengal are a protest against the plantation management. Thus the witchcraft accusations are not as ‘exotic and primitive rituals of a backward’ adivasi community during times of stress but rather as a powerful protest organized by a marginalized community against its oppressors. The book also illuminates how witchcraft accusations should be interpreted within the backdrop of labor-planters relationship characterized by rigidity of power patronage and social distance.Printed Pages: 210. 101489

My Days with Ramkinkar Baij
Niyogi Books; New Delhi, India; 8192091244; Hardcover; New; New;
My Days with Ramkinkar Baij, an English translation of the original Bengali Shilpi Ramkinkar Alaapchari (In Conversation with Artist Ramkinkar) is the result of the author’s long and close association with Ramkinkar Baij, one of modern India’s finest sculptors. This was an association that brings forth many cherished memories of the days in Santiniketan, when Ramkinkar was at his prolific and creative best.As Dr Bandyopadhyay puts it, ‘The very meaning of Ramkinkar is a huge amount of enterprise and a tumult of joy. Those who came slightly closer to him occasionally got to see another avatar—a serious, sombre, Ramkinkar, self-imprisoned within an introspective castle.’This book gives the reader a chance to delve into the mind of this great man and share some special moments of his life.Printed Pages: 316 with 39 colour illustrations, 100 paintings & 155 colour photographs. 106514

Cinema and Censorship: The Politics of Control in India
Orient BlackSwan; New Delhi, India; 2009; 8125036652; First Edition; Paperback; New; 14 x 22 Cm
This ‘narrative historiography’ traces the evolution of censorship discourses in post-colonial India, delineates the theoretical bases of censorship claims and contentions, and uncovers its many socio-political dimensions and complexities. The exercise of film censorship in modern India, Bhowmik argues, must be de-linked from its colonial origins, as such a practice violates the sacrality of the constitutionally granted freedom of speech and expression in the post-independence system. Penetrating the haze of bureaucratic manipulation, judicial laxity, vested interest and political or public pressure surrounding the film censorship debate, the author disagrees with the popular notion of censorship as moral restraint. Rather, he reveals that its true import lies in the propagation of political agendas. The overarching chronological schema that he devises outlines the intricate interplay of policies of governance and strictures of censorship. As in his other books – Indian Cinema Colonial Contours (1995) and Behind the glitz: Exploring an Enigma called Indian Film Industry (2008) – Bhowmik grounds the specific topicality of Cinema and Censorship within the wider contexts of film history and culture. A riveting read, this book goes into the very heart of the problematiques of Indian cinematic censorship. Printed Pages: 396. 026763

Barely seven years after the Wright Brothers flew for the first time a heavier than air machine at Kitty Hawk, North Carolina, USA, in 1903, the first crates containing two Boxkite aeroplanes landed at Karachi. In December 1910, they flew in the Indian skies for the first time, heralding the coming of the air age to India. It was, however, in early 1916, with the pressure of war on, that the British government decided to send military aeroplanes to India. Prior to that, a flying school had been opened in early 1914 but due to the war, it closed down. Thereafter, the miniscule presence of the Royal Flying Corps/Royal Air Force (RFC/RAF) in India (mostly in the North-West Frontier area) steadily increased and served right through the Twenties and Thirties, until World War II began and beyond it up to 1947. This was the period when the tactics and organisational structure of the new service gradually changed through innovation and emulation of the other two services until the Indian Air Force (IAF) came into existence in October 1932. It was in this period that there was a demand for Indians to be recruited into the RAF. The British flatly refused but eventually conceded that a separate service for India should be established.Printed Pages: 400. 104355

The Rich Heritage of Jammu and Kashmir: Studies in Art and Architecture, History and Culture of the Region
Gyan Books Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 1998; 8121205700; Hardcover; New; New;
Jammu And Kashmirhlu has basically been a Teacher of English literature but while working in the Amar Mahal Museum and Library, Jammu for the last two and half decades his mind got yoked to many Devotions of Jammu and Kashmir Art and architecture, History and culture, Mysticism and literature. And he passes from one devotion to the other with athletic ease.The present book is divided into two parts: one is concerned with Jammu and the other with Kashmir. Then each part is subdivided into various sections; first, art and architecture; second, history and third, literature.Essays on art and architecture: this section attempts at a descriptive and critical Study of ancient monuments of Jammu and Kashmir. The Author has detailed the Geographic and scenic beauty of the places with actuality and narrated the historical background in quite a succinct manner. He has examined the Religious aspect and then in the case of paintings his analytical faculty marks the critical one.Historical Essays: In this section Prof. Wakhlu writes about the historical personages with vivid dramatic effectiveness without sacrificing the historical accuracy. He has written only about the great and noble historical figures ignoring many others of less significance.Literary Essays: In the domain of literature he indeed has self-confidence and ease. Wandering with Sadhus: Ascetics in the Hindu Himalayas
Cambridge University Press; New Delhi, India; 2011; 8175968923; Softcover; New;
In this moving ethnographic portrait of Hindu renouncers – sadhus or ascetics – in northern India and Nepal Sondra L. Hausner considers a paradox that shapes their lives: while ostensibly defined by their solitary spiritual practice the stripping away of social commitments and their break with family and community renouncers in fact regularly interact with each other and with “householder” society. They form a distinctive alternative community with its own internal structure one that is not located in any single space. Highly mobile and dispersed across the subcontinent its members are regulalrly brought together through pilgrimage circuits on festival cycles. Drawing on many years of fieldwork Hausner presents intimate portraits of individual sadhus as she examines the shared views of space time and the body that create the ground of everyday experience. Written with an extraordinary blend of empathy compassion and anthropological insight this study will appeal to scholars students and general readers alike.Printed Pages: 266. 101498

Two Alone, Two Together: Letters Between Indira Gandhi and Jawaharlal Nehru 1922-1964
Penguin; New Delhi, India; 2004; 0143032453; First Edition; Paperback; New; 15 Cms x 23 Cms
Jawaharlal Nehru and his daughter Indira Gandhi were eloquent and prolific letter writers. The letters in this volume, selected from the extensive correspondence between the two over more than forty years, are like ‘conversation on paper—but more revealing’, as Sonia Gandhi observes. Intimate, articulate and unreserved, they provide illuminating new insights into the character and personality of two of the most towering figures of modern India. Remarkable for their honesty, sensitivity and humour, and replete with vivid descriptions of major personalities and events of their times, the letters chart Indira Gandhi’s development from a shy, frail schoolgirl into a charismatic political leader; they reflect the love of nature and books that father and daughter shared, and reveal their candid views on a variety of subjects, ranging from family and friends to issues of political and national importance. Above all, this volume reflects the depth and tenderness of the relationship between Jawaharlal and Indira, and the formidable moral and physical courage that was the hallmark of both personalities. Westland Limited; New Delhi, India; 9789384030308; Softcover; New;
Some like Farah Khan and Zoya Akhtar had sterling antecedents but it took a tough childhood and intermittent assignments on film sets to win the box office with Om Shanti Om and Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara, while Ashutosh Gowarikar auditioned for folk dances and failed with his debut film, Lagaan created cinematic history and Anurag Basu had to first dance as a background extra and later overcome cancer to witness Barfi win hearts and awards. These and other hitherto unfamiliar stories of directors belonging to the “100 crore club” like Rohit Shetty and Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra, the adventurous Kabir Khan and the maverick, Mahesh Bhatt take us through the unusual lives of 15 filmmakers of extraordinary films.Sonia Golani achieves the incredible by sitting each director down to candidly discuss the hype around the Oscars, the exclusivity of the “100 crore club”, effect of corporatization and much more. 109670

Respecting of women was prevalent in Indian culture ever since the Vedic period. The life values of women were considered holy and pure in those times. In the literature pertaining to Ramayana, Mahabharata, Upanishads, Buddhist, Middle Age and the British times, the highly respectable status of women is clearly shown. How differently were the women viewed at various times in different eras? Which were the women who made a special place for themselves in the different fields of life? In this context we remember Brahmavadini Gargi, Rajmahishi Durgavati of Gondvana, Queen Ahilyabai, Rani Lakshmibai of Jhansi, and some other women for their special contribution in maintaining the high status of women in Indian society. Portraying the position of women in the ancient period and comparing them to the present times when life is full of struggles, this book becomes a valuable tool for the scholars engaged in women studies and also for the people specializing in Indian traditional culture besides the general readers.Printed Pages: 103. 100395

8 Bengal Masters: Miracles of Existence
Mapin Publishing; New Delhi, India; 2015; 9789385360015; Softcover; New;
Published on the occasion of the show ‘8 Bengal Masters: Miracles of Existence’, this volume explores the post-Colonial context of Bengal that produced some of the finest artists of all times. Focusing on eight eminent artists, from various practices of print-making, sculpture and painting, it traces how they embarked on individual artistic journeys fostered by a renewed modernist search for an appropriate style in tandem with their responses to the contemporary situation.Preceded by international figure like Rabindranath Tagore, stimulating cross-cultural contacts with the modern European art and a critical exploration into the indigenous sensibilities heralded a whole new set of fresh alternative aesthetic possibilities for these artists. Their works reflect a period of intense social and aesthetic transformations with a visible emphasis on the humanistic concerns and existential condition of the newly-Independent India.The eight artists showcased here redefined the quest for a personal idiom not as a mere stylistic search but as the intimate and mutually transforming dialogue between individual and the world—both social and natural. From this perspective, this book takes a fresh look at the works of these artists as some of the best examples of the socially-relevant, liberating aesthetics of the post-’40s modern Indian art. White & Black: Journey to the Centre of Imperial Calcutta
Niyogi Books; New Delhi, India; 2009; 8189738437; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New; 11 x 11.5 Inches
Soumitra Das is a journalist born and based in Calcutta who began his career with The Statesman and its now with The Telegraph. He is deeply involved with the visual arts and heritage issues and writes regularly on these topics. He has a popular column titled ‘Flashback’ on Calcutta’s history and the city's rapidly changing face. In October 2007, he brought out a book on the streets of Calcutta entitled A Jaywalker's Guide to Calcutta which became a bestseller. He has contributed to the Tramjatra book on Calcutta trams published by an Australian university. Christopher Taylor is an English photographer based in France with the vision of a poet. His black-and-white photographs have an elegiac quality that sensitively capture the misty, grey climes of Iceland, the rarely noticed details of China's bleak and dreary urbanscape, and the grand colonial buildings of Calcutta that had seen better days. A zoologist by training, this self-taught photographer mostly uses a cumbersome studio camera or else an ancient Rolliflex even in the busiest streets. Yet human beings are rarely sighted in his works. So, his photographs never fail to surprise. He has held critically-acclaimed exhibitions in Paris, Arles, London, Beijing, Delhi, Mumbai, and Calcutta. Olaf Van Cleef, scion of the Van Cleef dynasty, has been a counselor in high-range jewellery at Cartier since 1982. An accomplished artist in his own right, Olaf, who lives in Paris, has held several exhibitions in India. He has published a travelogue entitled From Darjeeling to Pondicherry and is also a designer of gardens. Above all, he is an indefatiguable lover of Calcutta, a city he has been visiting since 1990. Discovery of Divinity Within: From a Personal File
Concept Publishing Company Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2002; 8170229545; Hardcover; New; New;
The journey within man points to traversing inward pastures more than normal in one's lifetime. Whatever the revelations, are enough meaningful in greatly shaping the human destiny. The book is a volume of uncommon self-realisation blessed by divinity that reigns within every man, as much as in the author himself. All materials of this supreme knowledge have been taken from the author's personal file, seldom sullied by narrow egotism; but the selective autobiographical touches to the sublimation might well inspire individual searches within, and the book is intended to create such mental thrusts. A long life covering more than seven decades is normally full of events and episodes that gives one lots of scope for unravelling the mysteries coming by if the one has the right eye so developed. The personal file is not all bliss but rather a mixed discovery of successes and failures, all uniquely novel and telling, nowhere putting hurdles on the track to the concept of divine oneness. Going beyond man is not easy; more difficult is going within man. The innermost self of man is a closed shop; there is no open sesame for it; instead one has to sharpen the eye to look for the key to divinity. It is awareness that divinity is everywhere, in you, me and all, which helps in spiritual discovery of the divine min dest. Yet the book is a humble work that does not provide any futuristic model for the millions of individuals. Neither does the author envisage it. Printed Pages: 156. 112061

Universal History of Music
Low Price Publications/D.K. Publishers Distributors Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 8175361565; Hardcover; New; New;
Music pervades all nature. There is nothing in nature that arouses our attention of eaffects our feelings so quickly as a sound. The book furnishes an account of the music of various nations-civilized ot uncivilized, on the face of the habitable globe. A few facts concerning Hindu music are given a place in the Appendix.It is generally accepted that most countries have a music of their own, the character of which may be called national. The primitive tones of the human voice are much the same in all countries and the prior to the progress of the art and to the period when the music of one country came to exercise some influence over that of another; the songs of a nation could express only the sensations of the heart, and have been little better than the mere tones of the voice.In the case of civilized nations where music is cultivated on scientific principles in the upper strata of society and where it has reached a high degree of development one must look to the less educated classes for obtaining a strictly correct idea of their national music. National music means a faithful expression of national feelings, and these feelings are best manifested under circumstances that are not controlled by extraneoud influences.The shepherd tending his flock, the fishermen mending his nets, the labourer in the paddy field, the cartman driving his cart, has no inducement to sing his favourite tune, unless he is prompted to it by the emotions of his heart. The professional musician, on the other hand, has several inducements to compose or perform music which he does not really feel. The peculiar character of the popular music of a nation depends to a large extent upon the climate of the country; upon the occupation and habits of the people, and as some go to the length of asserting upon the food upon which they chiefly subsist.The study of the music of various nations is advantageous to the musician for a number of resasons. The variety of rhythm and modulation and the deep and beautiful expression that prevail in some of the melodies may present to the student excellent models in composition. The study is important from an ethnological point of view, as it affords him an insight into the inward man and displays the character and temperament of different races, and the relation they bear to one another. It is also important from historical standpoint, for it shows the different stages of progress which music has made in different countries. Printed Pages: 402. 107421

Handbook of Human Rights and Criminal Justice in India: The System and Procedure
Oxford University Press; New Delhi, India; 2007; 0195690508; Second Edition; Hardcover; New; New;
This handbook is a practical, up-to-date, and reader friendly guide to the Indian criminal justice system, particularly in the context of human rights. It provides an overview of the Criminal Procedure Code, a lengthy and complex piece of legislation, which contains safeguards for civil and political rights. This substantially revised second edition explains the changes brought about by the Code of Criminal Procedure (Amendment) Act, 2005 in various provisions, including those relating to bail, plea bargaining, and the functioning of the police. It also discusses the recent Supreme Court judgement on police reforms and the right to compensation. It sets out the hierarchical framework of the police and the judiciary and their functions in the criminal justice system. The volume has been authored by a team at the South Asia Human Rights Documentation Centre (SAHRDC), which is engaged in the documentation of human rights laws and developments in the region. It draws attention to the implications of errors and omissions that can occur during the investigation and trial process. The handbook underscores the remedies found within the Code and in the Indian Constitution. It also highlights cases that have established important rules and guidelines relating to the implementation of the Code in accordance with the provisions of the constitution. Tagore's Paintings: Versification in Line
Niyogi Books; New Delhi, India; 8189738941; Hardcover; New; New;
Rabindranath Tagore, in the prefatory note in his Birmingham exhibition had commented: ‘My pictures are my versification in lines. If by any chance, they are entitled to claim recognition, it must be primarily for some rhythmic significance of form, which is ultimate and not for any interpretation of an idea or representation of fact.’ Breaking away from his image as the philosopher-poet of Gitanjali, that permeated an aura of mysticism, an ambience of peace and sublime harmony, Tagore set forth on this adventurous journey in the wonderful domain of art at a time when both health and words were failing him. Painting was seen by him as the epilogue to his life, a means to recollect memories and refurbish certain images that haunted him.Tagore’s Paintings: Versification in Lines outlines the creative process behind Tagore’s experiments with ink and colour. What began as emendations and rhythmic linear traceries gradually took diagrammatic abstract forms, creating curves and loops or flowing in a jagged manner, and moving in search of recognisable bodies or towards figuration. Tagore’s unrestrained expression in lines played havoc in the complacent and stagnant world of Indian art and paved the way towards modernism. The images presented in this book have been selected to support the author’s fastidious research of Tagore’s paintings, and the captions added to them, complement his analyses.Printed Pages: 96 with 79 paintings & 24 colour photographs. 106512

Cinemas of South India: Culture, Resistance, and Ideology
Oxford University Press; New Delhi, India; 2010; 019806795X; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New;
With around 800 films per year, India is the leading producer of filmed entertainment in the world. Interestingly, the Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, and Malayalam film industries––the major four in south India––make up over half the share. This collection of diverse but interconnected essays provides a fresh approach to understanding cinemas of south India. Considering cinema from various language-cultures, this volume discusses issues ranging from identity politics and minority discourse to re-makes and the politics of gender. Instead of focusing on language, or nation, or region, which have dominated discussions on films, this volume looks at ideologies within traditions of films and film industries to explore ideas and images related to language, identity, gender, communities, and politics. The essays look at culture in terms of conventional and transforming norms of societal politics, and more importantly in terms of cultures of cinema: of production, viewing, stardom, and film songs, among others. The comprehensive Introduction surveys all the issues and reviews existing studies on cinemas of south India. Nirmala and Normala
Penguin Books India Pvt. Ltd.; Delhi, India; 2014; 0143333143; Softcover; New;
Nirmala and Normala are twins separated at birth *dramatic music*. While one goes on to become a heroine, the other goes on to become a normal person. Yes, we know we should put ‘normal’ in quotes. We also know that we should issue a disclaimer that there’s no such thing as normal, but really, let’s talk about that later. If you’ve ever sat through a movie wondering why in the world the heroine is playing with street children or why she seems so daft despite being Harvard-educated, you should listen to Nirmala’s story. As for Normala, well, we all know her, don’t we?Printed Pages: 200. 103430
