The Taste Divine: Indian Vegetarian Cooking the Natural Way
Aryan Books International; New Delhi, India; 2012; 8173052069; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New; 23 x 18 Cm
This Book is perhaps one of the few cook books which can be read with interest even by those who have no interest in cooking. The reason is that the book does not merely cater to the palate but also to the spirit. The Author tries to peoject a new way of life rather than A Few new recipes. Food is a necessary evil or a necessary delight, depending on whether you eat to live or live to eat. Whatever the choice, food would be doubly delightful if it was capable of evolving the individual at the same time as giving delight to the mind. This is why this book is unique since it endeavours to do both. It also shows us how food can be both tasty and healthy at the same time. In olden times, Children were named after Gods, so that each time we called them, unconsciously we would also be repeating a mantra. Here many of the recipes are called after the name of Krishna and others, by various aspects of yoga. Just the repetition of these names would elevate our level of consciousness. This is thus a book with a difference. The food in this book, not only tastes divine but it also gives us a taste, for the divine. Printed Pages: 138 with 8 colour illustrations. 100255

Srimad Bhagvad Gita: The Song Celestial
Aryan Books International; New Delhi, India; 1997; 8173051097; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New; 14 x 19 Cm
The Srimad Bhagavad Gita is a spiritual dialogue between Lord Krishna and Arjuna a dialogue of and on dharma. It comes in the middle portion of the great epic, the Mahabharatha written by the sage, Vyasa, Lord Krishna was the avatar or the incarnation of the Supreme Being into the form of A Human being whereas Arjuna typifies the ordinary man, faced with one of the most difficult problems which any one could conceive the killing of his own kinsmen. The whole dialogue is placed in the middle of the battlefield of Kurukshetra amidst the din and clamour of a fratricidal war. Arjuna's problem was a particular one related to his particular need. Lord Krishna's answer is the whole of the Bhagavad Gita, and cuts at the root of the human problems, which is one of ignorance. Ignorance of the nature of our own selves, ignorance of the nature of our own selves, ignorance of the nature of the Supreme Being and ignorance of the nature of the universe which we inhabit. Social Movements and Cultural Currents 1789-1945 (Themes in Modern European History)
Orient BlackSwan; New Delhi, India; 2010; 8125040587; Softcover; New;
This bookis the first of the multi-volume series entitled Themes in Modern European History. This collection of essays offers a critical survey of European history between 1789 and 1945 and is essential reading for students and scholars of modern European history. The volume is divided into two sections—social movements and cultural currents. While the first section discusses events, representations, experiences, polities and societies of this period, the second section looks at the wider literary and artistic expressions. The first five chapters present a panoramic view of the French Revolution, the Russian Revolution, Italian Fascism, British Liberalism and Feminism, from their origins and focus on several key historical moments. The chapter on feminism evaluates all the others from the perspective of ‘the excluded other half of humanity’. The sixth (early modernism) and the seventh (later modernism) chapters address the fundamental question of when ‘modern’ actually begins and go on to show how radical philosophical shifts affected the way in which many writers and artists viewed themselves and art in relation to society and how they manifested themselves in the paintings and literature of the period. The last chapter examines the transformation of popular culture from its identification in the nineteenth century as an element of class recognition into a generational, national and mass-cultural item after World War II.Printed Pages: 409. 101952

The Ex-Files
Penguin Books India Pvt. Ltd.; Delhi, India; 2014; 0143418580; Softcover; New;
Ex-Files is the story of a woman, who despite her best efforts to save her marriage, finds herself facing a divorce petition. But instead of wallowing in self-pity, Vandana picked up the pieces of her shattered life and moved straight on. She not only finds a job and becomes self-sufficient, she also starts India’s first divorce support group, and deals inappropriate and hurtful remarks with grace and equanimity. While being true to both the pain and challenges of divorce, Vandana’s personal stories reveal the hardships and joys of moving through emotional upheaval and emerging stronger with her positive thinking and humour intact. The book also deals with the legal and social aspects of a divorce which are so often overlooked while women are dealing with the emotional upheaval of divorce. At once funny, tragic and uncompromisingly honest, this memoir will resonate with anyone who has endured the end of a marriage and come out changed.Printed Pages: 250. 103402

Making Peace with the Earth: Beyond Resource, Land and Food Wars
Women Unlimited; New Delhi, India; 2012; 8188965758; First Edition; Paperback; New; 14 Cms x 22 Cms
Wars in the 21st century are wars against the earth; against natural resources like water, soil, forests, minerals, seeds. The global corporate economy based on the idea of limitless growth has become a war economy and the means it uses are instruments of war. Trade wars. Waters wars. Food wars. In a compelling and rigorously documented exposition, Vandana Shiva demolishes the myths propagated by corporate globalisation in its pursuit of profit and power, by demonstrating its flawed assumptions and devastating fallouts. Consumerism lubricates the war against the earth, corporate control violates all ethical and ecological limits. It promotes technologies of production based on genetic engineering, geo-engineering and toxins; industrial development that entails the enforced appropriation of land, rivers, mountains; agribusinesses that deplete natures diversity; land-grab in Africa, Asia, South America. Exploitation of this order incurs the kind of ecological and economic debt that is unsustainable, unbailable and unbearable. Making Peace with the Earthoutlines how a paradigm shift to earth-centred politics and economics is our only chance of survival; and how collective resistance to corporate exploitation can open the way to a new environmentalism of interdependence and earth democracy.Printed Pages: 288. 037654

Vedic Mathematics for All Ages: A Beginners Guide (16 Sutras for Mental Calculations Easily Explained Formulae with Practice Exercises), (Second Edition)
Motilal Banarsidass Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2014; 8120832116; Second Edition; Hardcover; New; New;
The author has attempted to codify several useful results embedded in the ancient lore, in a form which is easily accessible to the children learning mathematics. Many of the chapters deal with computations using simple techniques which will shorten the effort involved in the conventional approach. The price one pays, of course, is that one has to learn the tricks, memorize them and use the appropriate one for each problem. While one might think that this takes away the generality of the modern approach, it certainly has the element of charm and intrigue which children [and grown-ups!] will find entertaining. Even working out why many of these approaches lead to correct results is a valuable exercise by itself. Contents: Foreword, Preface, Feedback, Introduction, 1. Complement, Subtraction, Multiplication by Specific Numbers, Base Multiplication, Working Base Multiplication, Multiplication, Algebra, Digital Roots, Divisibility, Division I, Division II, Squares, Straight Squaring, Cubes, Square roots of exact squares, Cube roots of exact cubes, Straight Division, Square roots II, Sutras, Glossary, Index.Printed Pages: 314. 102629

Young Saira is embroiled in the trickeries of fate, which thrust upon her a situation that splinters her peace into a million shards; leaving Saira making very plucky choices. This story not only maps the simplicity of the untouched beauty of Kashmir, but also focusses on the realities of life that encompass poverty and endurance; nudging parallel to hope and joy, in the lives of the people who reside there. To the people in the village on the six o clock Knoll, it is easier to deal with the hampering fissures, created by nature, than dealing with fellow humans who are misled and bent on tearing apart the tranquillity of their lives. Saira, nevertheless, has no such confusions, when she is thrown into an adventure, which forces her to embark on a treacherous journey, fraught with danger and violence. Former Google spokesperson and leading search engine strategy speaker and consultant Fox also exposes widely held myths about search engine rankings: for example, it's not true that large brands have an advantage due to their established presence or larger ad spending. Making Sense of Modi's India
Harpercollins India Publishers Ltd./Prakash Books; New Delhi, India; 9789351776321; Hardcover; New; New;
Where is India headed under Prime Minister Narendra Modi? What are the contours of the 'new' India he has promised to build? Is his promise of 'development' real or a cover for a hidden agenda? Who are the stakeholders in his idea of the state? Making Sense of Modi's India debates the future of the nation, bringing together a cross-section of leading voices from the academia, media and politics to examine the factors behind the dramatic resurgence of Hindu nationalism and Modi's own meteoric rise. Commentators like Andrew Whitehead, Meghnad Desai, Sevanti Ninan, Beena Sarwar, Sudheendra Kulkarni, among others, cast an incisive eye on aspects as diverse as Modi's extraordinary foreign relations drive, what his ascent means for India's relationship with Pakistan, the role of the media in the rise of Modi and the arrival of the BJP as the dominant political party in India. This anthology works through the implications of the Bharatiya Janata Party's massive victory in the May 2014 general elections, regarded as a watershed in post-Independence India's political history. It examines the future of secularism in India in the light of the collapse of the Congress and the Left. Drawing on historical parallels from Europe and, nearer home, Pakistan, Making Sense of Modi's India also probes the real nature of the ideology Modi represents and what that means for India. A must read in these tumultuous times. Printed Pages: 216. 107588

Exploring the Water Heritage of Mumbai
Aryan Books International; New Delhi, India; 2011; 8173054150; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New; 22 x 28 Cm
The city of Mumbai in India has generated a lot of curiosity among the scholars within India and abroad. The multi-dimensional nature of the city and the exuberant continuity in spite of various hurdles have been the strong points of Mumbai. Every city expands with the political rules. Today the municipal jurisdiction of Mumbai is identified with the term MCGM i.e., Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai. The term Bombay in the British records enveloped the area of seven islands. In ancient and medieval times certain localities outside the later British 'Bombay' had got populated. The book shows that these areas had the sources of potable water supply and hence they got populated. Later, the British officials identified many of these areas as having potential of providing water to the entire city. These were then considered for the major water schemes. Before the major water schemes like Vehar Water Works there were various efforts to conserve and preserve water because the existing water supply, as the official records reflect, by way of tanks and wells in South Bombay was inadequate to cater to the needs of the people. The book states such efforts towards early water management in the city. Water charities done by many philanthropists to the city came as a boon especially when there was inflow of population since the nineteenth century. The book takes a survey of these water charities. The book discusses the development of water till the Tansa Water Works. The present volume will interest people at large, in particular, specialists in water management and conservation, historians, architects, sociologists and anthropologists. The Heritage Sites of Gujarat: A Gazetteer
Aryan Books International; New Delhi, India; 2011; 8173054134; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New; 22 x 31 Cm
Human settlements in Gujarat can be traced back to the stone age period (Palaeolithic, Mesolithic) in the valleys of the river Sambarmati, Tapi, Narmada, Mahi and its tributaries. During the protohistoric period i.e. approximately 5000 years from the present Gujarat formed part of the earliest urban cultures with planned cities of the Harappa or Indus civilization which has been studied using archaeological material in the absence of any deciphered written text/data/ Through out the years proceeding this urban culture, during the Mauryas through the Guptas and the Islamic rule, Gujarat has been closely associated to the mainstream politics and culture of the country at large which is clearly visible in the architectural remains. The state of Gujarat is thus very rich in archaeological heritage and the present book attempts to document this aspect in a concise form. The book consists of a brief history of Gujarat from the Stone Age to the British rule, important monuments and archaeological sites and their importance and exhaustive list of sites from lower Paleolithic to the British times. This is basically a reference book useful to all those interested in the subject. The merit of the work lies in that it provides the interested researcher or curious layman with the salient features of a site, all at one place, thereby saving him hours of search through the profusion of archaeological books that are not necessarily located at one place. "Seven centuries ago Saint Dnyaneshwar wrote a commentary on Gita called Bhavarthadeepika, now popularly known as Dnyaneshwari after its author. Yogiraj: The Life and Teachings of Shri Shankar Maharaj
Zen Publications/D.K. Printworld (P) Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 9789384363208; Softcover; New;
YogirajShri Shankar Maharaj was a Siddha yogi, a compassionate and unusual Guru not bound by rules or convention. He was bent and deformed in body, and usually appeared to be half-witted and inebriated from the brandy he drank. However when situation demanded, he would use his yogic powers to appear like a child to some, a tall muscular yogi to others, and even as Lord Shiva and Lord Hanuman to some others.Shri Shankar Maharaj belonged to the NathPanth though he never wore the traditional attire of the sect. Maharaj spoke with a lisp and preferred not to preach himself, using instead disciples like TaisahebMehendale and SardarMirikar to spread the message of Dnyaneshwari, a commentary on the Bhagavad Gita by Sage Dnyaneshwar – a work that was very dear to Maharaj. Maharaj extended his abundant grace to the rich and poor alike and was loved by all. Also his teachings were not limited to the Hindu tradition. In fact, he taught Muslims like Khansaheb the true meaning of Islam and induced them to do daily namaz. His contemporaries – Chile Maharaj of Kolhapur, known as the avatar of Lord Dattatreya, Fakir Baba, well-known sage from Maharashtra, and HazratBabajan, the renowned lady Sufi sage from Pune – considered him as their spiritual ‘brother’.When Maharaj took samadhi in 1947 in Pune he was about 150 years of age. To this day hundreds of devotees visit his samadhi located on Pune-Satara road.Yogiraj chronicles the life and teachings of this spiritual giant in the words of some of his most prominent disciples. The Deeds of Harsha: Being a Cultural Study of Bana's Harshacharitaj
Prithvi Prakashan/Chaukhambha Publications; 1969; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New;
Indian History commentary of the Harshacharita is a close analytical study of Bana's great work which is acclaimed as a gazeteer of Harsha's court in poetical style. The cultural material brought together in the following pages is essential for the study of Indian History and Culture relating to the Gupta and post-Gupta civilisation. What the Ajanta paintings present to us, as the rich pictures of Indian civilisation in the fifth-sixth centuries A. D., is in no way in excess of what the two great works of Banabhatta present to us in words about the details of the Gupta civilisation. There are several portions in the text of the Harshacharita which are made clear for the first time in this commentary. Many a difficult passage, that had remained unintelligible uptilnow, will be found understood here in their proper Context and cultural background. The Author has thus recovered for modern scholarship the true meanings of Bana's long interminable descriptions and compound sentences by focusing the light of comparative evidence and knowledge from many sources, viz., Indian art and painting, literary and cultural tradition, institutions, and also linguistic parallels. Fortunately Bana's date is well-nigh certain. He lived in the first half of the seventh century when Gupta Culture had attained its optimum development. Art, religion, philosophy, polity, social life and many other institutions of the Golden Age were blazing in full lustre in the time of Bana and his patron king Harsha. Scholars have usually studied Bana as a poet or literary writer, but in the present work it is from an altogether new approach that Bana's text is analysed and expatiated at length. What once was wearisome in the Harshacharita now becomes fiery, each word of it pregnant with purposive meaning in its cultural context.Printed Pages: 295 with 103 figures & 4 pages of plates. 100619

Fiction As History: The Novel and the City in Modern North India
Orient BlackSwan; New Delhi, India; 2017; 817824487X; Hardcover; New; New;
This book provides a panoramic view of the intellectual and cultural life of North India over a century – from the aftermath of the 1857 uprising to the end of the Nehruvian era.The North’s historical cities, rooted in an Indo-Persianate culture, began changing more slowly than the Presidency towns founded by the British. Focusing on six major cities – Agra, Allahabad, Banaras, Delhi, Lahore, and Lucknow – Dalmia takes up eight canonical Hindi novels set in them to trace a literary history of domestic and political cataclysms. Her exploration of emerging Hindu middle classes, changing personal and professional ambitions, and new notions of married life provides a vivid sense of urban modernity.She looks at the radical social transformations associated with post-1857 urban restructuring, and at the political flux resulting from social reform, Gandhian nationalism, communalism, Partition, and the Cold War. These, she argues, shaped the realm of the intimate as much as the public sphere. Love and friendship, notions of privacy, attitudes to women’s work, and relationships within households are among the book’s major themes. Printed Pages: 444. 111473

Hindu Pasts: Women, Religion, Histories
Orient BlackSwan/Permanent Black; New Delhi, India; 2015; 8178243997; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New; 14 x 22 Cm
In her Introduction to this book—which showcases her work as a scholar of social, literary, and religious history—Vasudha Dalmia outlines the central ideas which thread her writings: first, to understand in greater historical depth the relationship between language, religion, and society in India, as well as the ever-changing role of its religious and social institutions; second, to recognize that the Hindu tradition, which colonials and nationalists tend to see as monolithic, is in fact a multiplicity of distinct and semi-autonomous strands. Professor Dalmia’s work reveals a steady focus on Indian religious traditions, sects, and histories which, over several hundred years, came to collectively comprise what in the nineteenth century became known as Hinduism. In her first essay, Max Müller’s study of the Veda is positioned within a larger history of German philosophical interest in eastern thought. Müller appears less an exceptional German scholar and eccentric Oxford phenomenon once his derivation and links with earlier European Indology are made clear. Subsequent essays look at the building blocks of colonial knowledge-formation, law-making, and pedagogy in colonial India, and the role in these of Banaras; at some of the major components of the Vaishnava Bhakti tradition; at pre-modern vernacular narratives that fed into constructing the modern Hindi novel and the Hindu ‘nari’; and at the history of modern Hindi literature. Anyone interested in the plurality of Hinduism, women’s issues, and Indian cultural history will find this book immensely interesting.Printed Pages: 374. 102277

Religious Interactions in Mughal India
Oxford University Press; New Delhi, India; 2014; 0198081677; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New; 15 x 23 Cm
Hindu-Muslim interactions in medieval and early modern India have been mostly studied in monolithic or antagonistic terms. This volume not only explores the multiplicity within a given religious tradition but also focuses on the exchanges across the various religious communities in north India from AD 1500 to 1800—thereby presenting a panoramic view of religious interactions during the period broadly regarded as Mughal. Drawing on a wide range of sources, the essays in this volume focus on Islamicate and Hindu traditions in their interactions with one another. They interrogate the idea of 'Hindu' and 'Muslim' as polarized religious identities existing from the moment Muslims entered north India in the eleventh century, and discuss the close intertwining of religious traditions with political power, while also highlighting the diversity of traditions in active conversation with one another. Given the contentious nature of Hindu-Muslim relations today, a fresh study of these traditions in their regional and temporal specificities, along with a renewed attempt to closely interrogate the language employed in describing them, is vital toward contesting contemporary "clash of civilizations" narratives in South Asia as well as elsewhere. The Cambridge Companion to Modern Indian Culture
Cambridge University Press; Cambridge, UK; 2012; 1107641039; Paperback; New; 16 x 24 Cm
India is changing at a rapid pace as it continues to move from its colonial past to its globalised future. This Companion offers a framework for understanding that change, and how modern cultural forms have emerged out of very different histories and traditions. The book provides accounts of literature, theatre, film, modern and popular art, music, television and food; it also explores in detail social divisions, customs, communications and daily life. In a series of engaging, erudite and occasionally moving essays the contributors, drawn from a variety of disciplines, examine not merely what constitutes modern Indian culture, but just how wide-ranging are the cultures that persist in the regions of India. This volume will help the reader understand the continuities and fissures within Indian culture and some of the conflicts arising from them. Throughout, what comes to the fore is the extraordinary richness and diversity of modern Indian culture. Table of Contents Chronology Introduction Rashmi Sadana and Vasudha Dalmia Part I. The Temple of Muktesvara at Caudadanapura: A Little Known 12th-13th Century Temple in Dharwar District, Karnataka
Indira Gandhi National Centre for the Arts/Abhinav Publications; New Delhi, India; 1995; 8170173272; Hardcover; New; New;
The northern part of Karnataka is one of the richest areas of lndia in monuments of great artistic value. It was subjected to the rule of several royal families, CaLukyas of Kalya?a, Ka?acuris and Senas in the tenth to thirteenth centuries CE which has been a period of great cultural refinement. It was the time of the greatest expansion of the Kalamukha-Lakulasaiva movements, and of the rise of Virasaivism.The temple of Muktesvara at Cau?adanapura (Dharwar district) is a beautiful representative of the style and the high culture of that time. Its history is known to us, thanks to a set of seven long inscriptions, composed in literary medieval Kannada, engraved with great care on large steles. It is a single cella temple in what is popularly known as Jakka?acari style. The present study contains a historical introduction, the complete edition, translation and interpretation of the inscriptions, an architectural description, with a graphic survey and an iconographical analysis.Printed Pages: 206. 101634

Kalamukha Temples of Karnataka: Art and Cultural Legacy
Indira Gandhi National Centre for the Arts/D.K. Printworld (P); New Delhi, India; 2012; 8124606056; Hardcover; New; New;
The Kalamukha temples in Karnataka are associated with the Lakulasaiva movement especially the beliefs and practices of the Kalamukha Saivites and the Jakka?acari style of temple in Kamataka.This volume is a study of two of the best examples of Kalamukha shrines in the region. It focuses on the Somanathesvara Temple at Hara?aha??i and Ka?ambesvara Temple at Ra??iha??i, splendid examples of conversion of single-cell shrines into triple sancta.With numerous illustrations of the temples including their plans and sculptures and referring to and quoting from the Agamas, the Pura?as and other ancient works, it studies the architecture of the temples along with their history, the general plans of the temples, their interior including pillars, lintel and entrances, their external structure, and their iconography, particularly the main deities in the temples. It makes a unique effort to study the inscriptions associated with the temples which are in Kannada interlaced with Sanskrit verses and containing Sanskrit words, presenting their Roman transliteration and translation into English. The inscriptions include one on renovation of Somesvara Temple by King Joma (CE 1181), one on the foundation of a Temple of Dasdvara laid by Dasiraja (CE 1188) and one that eulogizes the Kadambas and minister Soma (CE 1144).Printed Pages: 675. 101641

The Juvenile Justice System in India: From Welfare to Rights
Oxford University Press; New Delhi, India; 2004; 0195665511; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New;
The Constitution of India envisages for Indian children a happy and healthy childhood, free of abuse and exploitation. However, the reality of daily life for vast numbers of children is completely disconnected from this vision. In the case of juveniles facing the law enforcement machinery, the siutation is even more poignant. This book is a comprehensive and thought provoking examination of the working of the juvenile justice system in India as it exists today and how it has developed historically. Acording to the author, the problem of neglected and delinquent children can only be understood and dealt with in the context of the wider concept of child rights. The objectives of the Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) Act, 2000, are to ensure the care and protection of children, to provide for their development and rehabilitation, and most significantly, to reorient the law regarding juveniles acording to the standards and rules prescribed by the United Nations. Large n umbers of children in India live in conditions of deprivation and in circumstances which can easily lead them to crime. The author shows how, despite the best of intentions, lack of coordination betwen various juvenile justice agencies causes the whole system to be dysfunctional. Using the insights ofered by this analysis, Ved Kumari strongly advocates the adoption of a systemic and holistic approach to juvenile justice, where each agency, from the police to the rehabilitation and training institutes, is kept aware of the objectives of the system. Further, she ofers a critical analysis of the factors which have so far prevented the development of a viable and beneficial juvenile justice system. Printed Pages: 376. 013858
