Vitasta Publishing Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2015; 9789382711421; Hardcover; New; New;
armed patriotism. Unlike 1857, this struggle was not a shortlived intense, violent upheaval that could be savagely subdued. India was patient and determined for a longhaul struggle. This captivating work brings a large part of this fascinating period back to life. It records, in a single canvas, complex strands of events beginning with the 1877 grand Durbar at Delhi, to the eve of Indian Provincial Elections in 1936. It chronicles the sacrifice of the revolutionaries, political challenge by the Swarajya Party, mass movements led by Gandhi, identity politics of Jinnah, British strategy of ‘divide and rule’ to frustrate the Indian aspirations, and finally Congress’s submission into participating in the 1936 elections. A second part of this narration in Volume II begins from 1937, where we leave the reader in this book.It describes the culmination of this grand movement in the midnight of 15 August 1947 and the legacy that the new India inherited. 107198

On the Road to Freedom: Footprints on Indian History 1937-1947, Part II
Vitasta Publishing Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2015; 9789382711438; Hardcover; New; New;
The awakening of the average Indian and his conscious strivings to have his voice heard resumed not long after the Mutiny of 1857. It was suppressed by the Raj with iron hands. The native response grew hard and more organised—ranging from Pheroze Mehta’s constitutional pleas to Tilak’s bold demand for ‘swaraj’ and from Gandhi’s idealistic nonviolence to Bose’s armed patriotism. Unlike 1857, this struggle was not a shortlived intense, violent upheaval that could be savagely subdued. India was patient and determined for a longhaul struggle. This captivating work brings a large part of this fascinating period back to life. It chronicles the sacrifice of the revolutionaries, political challenge by the Swarajya Party, mass movements led by Gandhi, identity politics of Jinnah and British strategy of ‘divide and rule’. Part II of this book opens in 1937 when the undercurrent of tension among European nations came to the surface and the rivalry between imperialism and fascism began to enter into the discourse of Indian political parties too. The engrossing work records the dilemma of the Congress in supporting British war efforts and upholding Gandhian nonviolence at the same time. Subhas Bose’s unfaltering quest for an undivided India’s independence shines through amidst unprecedented chaos. The book goes on to narrate the long procrastinated Quit India Movement and the heroic accounts of the INA. It exposes how the nervous British, hastening to leave India, play their malicious diplomatic ‘end game’ in dividing the country with tacit endorsement of native politicians. The book ends by describing Indian independence in the midst of partition and fratricidal bloodshed, while the youngest nation refused to be overwhelmed by formidable adversities, aspiring to take its rightful place in the comity of nations! 107199

The Imaginary Institution of India: Politics and Ideas
Orient BlackSwan/Permanent Black; New Delhi, India; 2012; 8178243571; Softcover; New;
Sudipta Kaviraj has long been recognized as among India_ ?s most thoughtful and wide-ranging political thinkers and analysts, and one of the subtlest and most learned writers on Indian politics in recent times. Paradoxically, this has remained something of a state secret, because Kaviraj_ ?s writings on these subjects have remained scattered in learned journals, many of which remain difficult to access. So the present volume fills a most important gap in the literature on politics and political thought in South Asia. Among Kaviraj_ ?s many strengths is his quite exceptional ability to position Indian politics within the frameworks of political philosophy in the West alongside perspectives from Indian history and indigenous political thought. The writings collected here range over a wide terrain, including studies of the peculiar nature of Indian democracy; the specificities of the regimes of Jawaharlal Nehru and Indira Gandhi; political culture in Independent India; the construction of colonial power; the relationship between state, society, and discourse in India; the structure of nationalist discourse; language and identity formation in Indian contexts; the relation of development with democracy and democratic functioning; and the interface of religion, politics, and modernity in South Asia. This volume will be indispensable for every student and scholar of South Asian politics, history, and sociology. Printed Pages: 328. 101990

The Trajectories of the Indian State: Politics and Ideas
Orient BlackSwan/Permanent Black; New Delhi, India; 2012; 8178243520; Softcover; New;
Sudipta Kaviraj has long been recognized as among India’s most thoughtful and wide-ranging political thinkers and analysts, one of the subtlest and most learned writers on Indian politics. Ironically, this has remained something of a state secret because Kaviraj’s writings are scattered and not easy to acess as a connected body. So the present volume—like its predecessor The Imaginary Institution of India—fills a vital gap in South Asian political thought. Among Kaviraj’s many strengths is his exceptional ability to position Indian politics within the frameworks of Western political philosophy alongside perspectives from indigenous political thought. In order to understand relations between the state and social groups, or between dominant and subaltern communities, Kaviraj says it is necessary to first historicize the study of Indian politics. Deploying the historical method, he looks at the precise character of Indian social groups, the nature of political conflicts, the specific mechanisms of social oppression, and many related issues.Printed Pages: 290. 101991

Cambridge University Press; New Delhi, India; 8175961082; First Edition; Paperback; New;
Civil society is one of the most used - and abused - concepts in current political thinking. In this important collection of essays, the concept is subjected to rigorous analysis by an international team of contributors, all of whom seek to encourage the historical and comparative understanding of political thought. In the second section, contributors consider the theoretical and practical contexts in which the notion of civil society has been invoked in Asia, Africa and Latin America. Oceans and the Future of the Human Race
Gyan Books Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2016; 9789380222875; Softcover; New;
We have lived with the Oceans and utilized its services since time immemorial. We are drawn to the sea, for the coasts offer many benefits to local communities. Indeed we don't need to live near the beach to be connected to the Ocean. Oceans, a critical player in the basic elements we need to survive, affect our lives every day in various ways, around the world. Ocean plants produce half of the world's oxygen we breathe. The single Ocean (with its many named parts) harbors an enormous amount of the planet's biodiversity; it's the largest habitat on Earth, yet we know so little about it. The Oceans cover 71 per cent of the Earth's surface and contain 97 per cent of the planet's water. Logically, our planet is misnamed – it should be called Planet Ocean and not Planet Earth. No matter what we say about it, there is always that which we can't. The influence of the vast Oceans on the Human Race is a fascinating subject for analysis and insights derived from intellectual inquiry. This diverse and complex subject necessarily requires a blending of knowledge from different disciplines. Human well-being as it relates to the condition of the Oceans spread across the globe and its nexus with social issues is very much part of the Human Race. Very basic and simple concerns relate to food and nutrition that are derived on a large scale from the Ocean resources. The history of the world has itself been shaped essentially by the ability of the Human Race to master transportation across the Oceans and the ability to access and utilize a range of resources from marine structures, including hydrocarbons, minerals and a wealth of other resources, which in a variety ways have become a part of daily human existence. Oceans can also take lives. Coastal civilizations can be wiped out as is witnessed in many ancient parables, myths and religions. It means, Oceans are, at the same time, both master and servant to the Human Race. Unfortunately, today we are also altering, at an unprecedented rate, the relatively stable relationships that we have lived with in relation to the Oceans. Serious threats to all forms of life have also been imposed by other human actions that have led to serious problems of pollution. What the great majority of people do not understand is that it threatens the survival and thus the future of the entire Human Race. We are also running out of time. How can a balance be achieved between conservation and exploitation of marine resources? Is development towards sustainable use of marine resources possible? Our security, our economy, our very survival – all require healthy Oceans. We must look after Oceans if we are to look after humanity. This book is written in a lucid and very readable style, and provides a wealth of knowledge and insightful analysis, which is a rare amalgam of multidisciplinary perspectives and unique lines of intellectual inquiry. The only aim of the author is to direct the world attention to the Oceans. As land creatures we tend to think primarily in terms of land; Oceans remain out of sight, out of mind. In most national capital cities where decisions are made, Oceans do not figure in day-to-day activities so funding is much harder to come by. In this respect this book is of great value, and it will appeal as much to a non-specialist reader as it would to specialists in the diverse but interconnected subjects covered by this volume. Kalighat Paintings (from the collection of Victoria and Albert Museum, London & Victoria Memorial Hall, Kokata)
Mapin Publishing; New Delhi, India; 2011; 1935677217; Softcover; New;
Kalighat painting evolved as a unique painting style in the rapidly urbanizing cityscape of 19th-century Kolkata. Reflecting a new language, these paintings recorded the changes in lifestyles, values, and a new visual vocabulary brought forth by lithographic presses and studio photography. The artists who developed the Kalighat painting style were traditional scroll painters (patuas). In catering to the transient, urban populace, the artists let go on of their linear narrative styles and adopted single pictures with one or two figures. The traditionally inherited techniques and iconography were blended with the use of watercolours and Western academic shading, to show frames of a changing society. This volume accompanies the touring ‘Kalighat Paintings’ exhibition organized by the Victoria and Albert Museum, London in collaboration with the Victoria Memorial Hall, Kolkata in late 2011. The V&A, London holds the single largest collection of Kalighat paintings, and this is the first exhibition of the collection in India. Best examples from the collections and contemporary Kalighat paintings are illustrated in this book. Supporting essays reveal the importance of these collections, and also highlight the era in which this painting thrived, and the techniques that were used by the artists. Printed Pages: 111. 111492

Discourses on Aging and Dying
Sage Publications; New Delhi, India; 2008; 0761936440; First Edition; Paperback; New;
The inevitability of aging and dying doesn`t make accepting and adjusting to their truths any easier. This collection of essays probes these truths from various angles: philosophical, religious, socio-ethical and medical. Discourses on Aging and Dying is a topical book—it comes at a time when, on the one hand, the world is witnessing an increase in the percentage of the aged population, and, on the other, traditional practices of caring for the aged are being replaced by more impersonal, state-driven methods. This well organized discourse explores philosophical traditions—Hindu, Buddhist and Islamic perspectives—to explain the concept of life and death, and offers strategies for coping with aging and dying. It then delves into the socio-ethical issues related to these in the Indian context—India, with its huge population, poor bio-medical facilities and the radically changing attitudes towards the aged, is facing a crisis. The final section of the book addresses a pressing problem confronting Indian society: end-of-life care. Printed Pages: 272. 028697

Nursing and Empire: Gendered Labor and Migration from India to the United States
Orient BlackSwan; New Delhi, India; 2016; 8125062300; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New; 16 x 24 Cm
Drawing on extensive archival research and compelling life-history interviews, Nursing and Empire examines the lives of Indian nurses, which have unfolded against a complex backdrop of Anglo-American capitalist imperialism and the emergence of a postcolonial Indian nation-state still tied to this global system.The bookbegins with the movement of white, U.S.-based single female medical missionaries to India and proceeds through the remaking of the colonial medical map through race-based segregation in the U.S. and the “open door imperialism” of the Rockefeller Foundation in India. It ends with the Cold War emigration of Indian nurses as one outcome of the critical role played by U.S. medical interests in a colonial “civilizing mission.”Complicating the long-held view of Indian women as passive participants in the movement of skilled labor in this period, Reddy demonstrates how these "women in the lead" pursued new opportunities afforded by their mobility. At the same time, Indian nurses also confronted stigmas based on the nature of "women’s work", religious and caste differences within the migrant community, and the racial and gender hierarchies of the U.S.Spanning two centuries and multiple geographic spaces, Nursing and Empire sheds light on histories of capitalist expansion and marginalized women’s histories of resistance and labor migration.This book will be of considerable interest to scholars and students of gender studies, labor history, and U.S.–India relations. Essays on Iran and Israel: An Indian Perspective
KW Publishers; New Delhi, India; 2014; 9789383649136; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New;
This book, containing essays on themes relating to India's relations with Iran and Israel, deals with issues that have been intensely debated in the country for some time now. India’s robust ties with both Iran and Israel – bitter adversaries for more than three decades – have intrigued West Asia watchers. The essays herein highlight the parallel nature of India's engagements with the two countries and attempt to understand the critical concept of strategic autonomy that defines India’s foreign policy postures on contentious issues. The first five essays touch on the central drivers of India’s Iran policy and discuss the limits on New Delhi’s relations with the Islamic Republic. The last three essays dealing with Israel highlight the significance of India’s intervention on questions relating to Israel as well as Israel’s inspirational connection with India. With its unique treatment, lucid analysis and unusual organisation, this factually informed and policy oriented collection of essays on India, Iran and Israel will be an extremely useful resource for scholars, students, policymakers and diplomats alike. It will also interest business community involved with the West Asian region as well as any intelligent layperson looking for facts and figures on subjects discussed in the book.Printed Pages: 272. 104262

Mohammed Rafi: Golden Voice of the Silver Screen
Om Books International; New Delhi, India; 9789380070971; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New;
Born in 1924 at Kotla Sultan Singh, a village near Amritsar, Mohammed Rafi, nicknamed ‘Pheeko’, was the second youngest of Hajji Ali Mohammed and Allah Rakhi’s six sons. He started singing early, deeply inspired by the songs of a wandering fakir, in the village. In the 1920s, circumstances compelled Rafi’s father to move to Lahore where he opened a small dhaba. Rafi’s elder brother, Mohammed Deen, started a barber shop in Noor Mohalla, Bhatti Gate in the same city, with Rafi lending him a helping hand. Meanwhile, Mohammed Deen’s friend, Abdul Hameed recognised Rafi’s talent and encouraged him to sing. Later, he convinced the reluctant family to allow him to take Rafi to Bombay. In 1944, the two arrived in an alien city from where Mohammed Rafi slowly won over the heart of an entire nation. Mohammed Rafi: Golden Voice of the Silver Screen is the authorised biography of one of India’s most beloved singers.Printed Pages: 272 with CD. 105072

Ao Naga World-View: A Dialogue
D.K. Printworld (P) Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2015; 8124608083; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New; 15 x 23 Cm
The book, as the title says, consists of a series of dialogues about the Ao Naga world-view, their traditions, rituals and ethical norms, and their ideas of history and objects of veneration. The dialogue took place in specially organized meetings and participants were drawn from elders of the Ao Naga tribe, Ao Naga intellectuals and scholars, a student and a visitor from outside. The conversations that took place in these meetings were recorded and what appears in the book is a very lightly edited version of the recorded conversations. The philosophically interesting aspects of these conversations are the views expressed by various participants on the human condition, the ethical grounding of human life, the dividing line between life and death, and about their institutions for educating the young and dispensing justice. The book aims to achieve a twofold objective: (1) to secure an authentic articulation of the traditional Ao world through a dialogue between different Ao voices (an aim pursued very differently from the anthropologist’s participant observation), and (2) clearing the ground for the reflection of philosophical insights thrown up in the process of this articulation. The insights will be obvious to the sympathetic and discerning reader; the reflection is left to those who will read the book with serious philosophical interest.Printed Pages: 218 with 7 color illustrations. 100312

Gender, Medicine, and Society in Colonial India: Women’s Health Care in Nineteenth-and Early Twentieth-Century Bengal
Oxford University Press; New Delhi, India; 0199468222; Hardcover; New; New;
British imperialism in India left in its wake the scars of many battles between the colonizer and the colonized. Intense hostilities were witnessed as each tried to prove its superiority in domains such as medicine, education, and law. Through the lens of gender politics, Sujata Mukherjee confronts these conflicts to reveal the contested ‘body’ of the Indian woman. Focusing on hospital medicine and preventive medical care, Mukherjee traces the popularization of Western forms of medical care in nineteenth- and early twentieth-century Bengal. She shows how it created a space—albeit small—for providing Western health care to female patients; for the first time, women could receive medical attention outside the purdah and zenana. However, there was a simultaneous discrediting of indigenous forms of medicine—such as Ayurveda and Unani—and their practitioners, who had once exercised significant influence.The book also explores the growth of Western medical education among women in Bengal. Overcoming racial and gender discrimination, social taboos, and active opposition from authorities and their families, some remarkable women became doctors and practicing physicians. Aiding them in their long-drawn efforts were the Brahmo Samaj and several women’s organizations and agencies of the time. Printed Pages: 260. 111582

Doing Sociology in India: Genealogies, Locations, and Practices
Oxford University Press; New Delhi, India; 2011; 019807011X; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New; 15 x 23 Cm
This important volume on the history of sociology in India locates scholars, scholarship, theories, perspectives, and practices of the discipline in different cities and regions of the country over a century. It argues that this history is enmeshed in political projects of constructing a ‘society’, which took place as a result of colonialism and dominant nationalism. Doing Sociology in India affirms the existence of both strong and weak traditions of scholarship in India, and underscores three processes that have aided this development at various points of time: reflexive interrogation of received scholarship; probing ideal types of theories within the classroom; and questioning existing debates on society and its language by publics. It suggests that processes outside academia in social movements and associational groups have interrogated mainstream sociology to make it diverse and multiple. The book has a pan-Indian perspective—it brings together practitioners and interlocutors from various cities and regions to discuss the many traditions of the discipline. Their arguments are structured around the interplay of three themes— time, space, and power. The Introduction provides an overview of how sociology evolved in India and sets the stage for a nuanced understanding of how these traditions grew and became institutionalized in India. Hundred Tamil Folk and Tribal Tales
Orient BlackSwan; New Delhi, India; 2010; 8125039201; First Edition; Paperback; New; 15 x 23 Cm
In Hundred Tamil Folk and Tribal Tales we have a rich variety of tale-types of a major South Indian oral tradition. Sujatha Vijayaraghavan’s lucid English translation here beacons a serious engagement in Indic studies. It locates this body of work at the interface between folklore, anthropology, sociology and public culture of a by-gone era. This handy collection provides an easy access to the cultural registers and linguistic mores of a tribal/folk population at a crucial juncture of colonial modernity. Furthermore, she translates not merely the tales as she finds them in the Tamil original (naatupura kathai kalanjiyam), but distinguishes and recognises the tribal tale, otherwise unnoticed in a proverbial ocean of Indian folklore. As a vibrant vein of wit and wisdom in Dravidian lives and traditions, the tribal-tale receives the first-ever straight look in these pages. Printed Pages: 324. 032725

The Oxford Handbook of The Indian Constitution
Oxford University Press; New Delhi, India; 0198787332; Softcover; New;
The Indian Constitution is one of the world's longest and most important political texts. Its birth, over six decades ago, signalled the arrival of the first major post-colonial constitution and the world's largest and arguably most daring democratic experiment. Apart from greater domestic focus on the Constitution and the institutional role of the Supreme Court within India's democratic framework, recent years have also witnessed enormous comparative interest in India's constitutional experiment. The Oxford Handbook of the Indian Constitution is a wide-ranging, analytical reflection on the major themes and debates that surround India's Constitution. The Handbook provides a comprehensive account of the developments and doctrinal features of India's Constitution, as well as articulating frameworks and methodological approaches through which studies of Indian constitutionalism, and constitutionalism more generally, might proceed. Its contributions range from rigorous, legal studies of provisions within the text to reflections upon historical trends and social practices. As such the Handbook is an essential reference point not merely for Indian and comparative constitutional scholars, but for students of Indian democracy more generally. Printred Pages: 1072. 111604

Gender Stereotypes in Corporate India: A Glimpse
Response Books; New Delhi, India; 2008; 8178298511; First Edition; Paperback; New;
A stereotype is a conceptual image that may lead to a simplified view of a person or a thing. Inaccurate stereotypes serve to constrict and limit vision and perception. Gender Stereotypes in Corporate India: A Glimpse explores the theme of `understated` gender stereotypes in the corporate domain in India, while delving into the antecedents and outcomes. Studies suggest that only an insignificant percentage of women managers ever reach the higher echelons of management in most organizations—a phenomenon which can be attributed to the glass ceiling, and the differential treatment meted out to women managers in terms of career mobility, recruitment, evaluation, compensation and other factors. Studies also suggest that gender stereotypes contribute largely to such phenomena. Through three broad studies, the book, a first of its kind, explores existing managerial gender stereotypes in Indian corporates, the antecedents of such stereotypes and the possibility of reducing such stereotypical inaccuracies. The book argues that a basic transformation at the level of policy making, along with a collective will for changing the mindset of the people, is needed to overcome gender differences in organizations as well as educational institutions. This book will interest a wide readership including women professionals, students and trainers in corporate training schools and business schools, sociologists, and organizational psychologists. Infirm Glory: Shakespeare and the Renaissance of Image of Man
Chronicle Books; New Delhi, India; 2008; First Edition; Hard Cover; New; New; 15 x 23 Cm
Infirm Glory places Shakespeare in the context of Renaissance thought and literature, especially with respect to man’s faculties and his place in the universe. The author starts with an account of Renaissance skepticism, the line of thought that questions man’s ability to attain to certain knowledge. This intellectual doubt soon extends to moral questioning, and passes beyond formal philosophy to broader literary and speculative treatments. Infirm Glory was originally published in 1981. This new edition carries a fresh introduction by the author, looking back on his work and placing it in the light of subsequent scholarship. There is also a short critique of English studies, especially Shakespeare studies, in India. Printed Pages: 272. 031533

Art of the Intellect: Uncollected English Writings of Sudhindranath Datta
Chronicle Books; New Delhi, India; 2008; 8180280330; First Edition; Hard Cover; New; New; 15 x 23 Cm
This volume contains all the recoverable English writings of the Bengali poet and critic Sudhindranath Datta, outside those already gathered in an earlier collection, The World of Twilight. They include a hitherto unknown introduction for a projected Oxford Book of Bengali Verse, drafted by Sudhindranath for the proposed editor, Rabindranath Tagore. Other pieces testify to his informed interest and original thought about Indian and European literature, ancient history, international politics, philosophical speculation and the social mores of his time. There are also a number of book and theatre reviews, and many other pieces that he wrote for The Statesman. The range of subjects and depth of treatment reflect one of the most erudite and original minds of Bengal's post-Tagore, post-Independence generation. They recreate the political, cultural and intellectual milieu of that age of transition. The core material is drawn from the Datta archives at Jadavpur University, Kolkata. Some of it was never published. Other items may have been printed but are virtually untraceable: they have been recovered from drafts and typescripts. Some pieces have been recovered from The Marxian Way, other rare journals, and from The Statesman archives. The volume is edited by Sukanta Chaudhuri with an Introduction by Amiya Dev. Women Rights Violation Vs Restoration
Kalpaz Publications/Gyan Books Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2015; 9789351281559; Hardcover; New; New;
Women's rights are the rights and entitlements claimed for women and girls of many societies worldwide. Although males seem to have dominated in many ancient cultures, there are some exceptions. During the 19th century some women began to ask for, demand, and then agitate and demonstrate for the right to vote, the right to participate in their government and its law making. In the subsequent decades women's rights again became an important issue in the English speaking world. By the 1960s the movement was called feminism. In 1946 the United Nations established a Commission on the Status of Women. The Universal Declaration of Human Rights, adopted in 1948, enshrines "the equal rights of men and women", and addressed both the equality and equity issues. The present book highlights, considers and discusses various contemporary issues of women rights. It is hoped that the present edition of this book will be beneficial to all concerned of the society, in general and students, lawyers, advocates, academicians, human rights institutions, researchers and NGOs working in women rights field, in particular.Printed Pages: 289. 106130

Maximum City: Bombay Lost and Found
Penguin; New Delhi, India; 2006; 0670049212; First Edition; Paperback; New; 16.5 Cms x 25 Cms
Suketu Mehta left Bombay at the age of 14. Twenty-one years later, having lived in Paris, London and New York's East Village, he returned to rediscover the only city he calls his own. The result is this stunning, brilliantly illuminating portrait of the megalopolis and its people—a book, seven years in the making, that is as vast, as diverse, as rich in experience, incident and sensation as the city itself. Mehta approaches the life and lives of Bombay from unexpected angles. He takes us into the underworld where Muslim and Hindu gangs manage to wrest some control of the Byzantine political and commercial systems of the city. He follows the life of a bar dancer, whose childhood of poverty and abuse left her no choice but the one she made. He journeys on the famed local trains and out onto the streets and footpaths, where the essential story of Bombay is played out every day by the countless migrants who come in search of a better life. He opens windows into the inner sanctums of Bollywood and the alternative universe at its fringes. And through it all—as each individual story unfolds—we hear Mehta's own story: of the mixture of love, frustration, fascination, and intense identification he feels for and with Bombay. Candid, impassioned, insightful, both surprisingly funny and heart-rending, Maximum City is a revelation of a complex and ever-changing world: the continent of Bombay. Printed Pages: 600. 013187

Early Buddhist Monachism
Munshiram Manoharlal Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2017; 8121501202; Reprint; Hardcover; New; New; 15 x 23 Cm
This treatise on the growth and early development of the Sangha (Buddhist Monastic Order) has often been referred to by scholars as the most complete and masterly treatment of the subject and, as such, invaluable to students of Buddhism. It has besides a peculiar importance in relation to the history of Indian culture, As the author says, "Indian culture is composite and the Buddhist contribution to it during the two millennia and a half that Buddhism was a living religion in India is so much a part and parcel of it that no true view of Indian culture is possible by ignoring the Buddhist contribution". This contribution was made through the organisation of Buddhist monkhood. The author has shown with a wealth of masterly scholarship how this organisation was established and developed in India. His chapters on the Patimokkha and Vinaya regulations of the monk community, the growth of coenobium among them, their internal polity of communal life, written from a scientific and historical point of view, are interestingly presented and will hold the general reader. First submitted anonymously as a prize-thesis to the University of Calcutta, it won the Griffith Memorial Prize in 1919. The verdict of the university examiners has been confirmed by Buddhistic scholars the world over who hailed it on its first publication as a work of exceptional originality and of great value in the study of Buddhism and Buddhist history. Fate and Fortune in the Indian Scriptures
Cambridge University Press; New Delhi, India; 2014; 9789382993889; Hardcover; New; New;
Fatalism is a philosophical doctrine which states that an individual does not have full control over the events that happen in his life. There is no trace of fatalism in the early Indian literature— Samhitas Brahmanas and Upanisads ; it surged in the succeeding period. This book argues that the predominance of the priestly class after the revival of Brahminism as an aftermath of the decline of Buddhism ushered in conspicuous changes in people’s attitude to life. The new modifications helped to entrench fate as a formidable force. It explains that the natural factors which led to the rise of fatalism were observation of the inexorability of death. The author has referred to a splendid array of scriptures ranging from the early and late Vedic literature Ramayana Mahabharata to Buddhist and Jain texts Bible and other old western texts to establish her erudite findings.Printed Pages: 328. 101475

History of Buddhism (in 2 Part)
Aditya Prakashan; New Delhi, India; 2016; 817742145X; Hardcover; New; New;
In 1908 Sarat Chandra Das published the Pag Sam Jon Zang by Sumpa-khampo. It has been hailed by Prof. G. Tucci: 'It was composed with a wise and discriminating choice of older sources. Its purpose is to be a summa of Tibetan historical traditions, in which chronicles and myths, saints' lives and cosmogonic legends, political changes and religious doctrines (lugs gnis) meet'. The importance of the work lies in passages quoted from the works of several predecessors, as he had access to a large amount of documents now lost.;The first part is a history of Buddhism in India beginning with the life of the Buddha, the rise of various schools of Buddhism, the lives of great philosophers and masters, the destruction of Nalanda and other monasteries, siddhas, evolution of grammar, metaphysics, medicine, and poetry. Detailed list of contents provides ready access to any topic. The Index at the end gives a summary of the life of every person, place, monastery, and serves the purpose of an English translation of the Tibetan text.;The second part is the history of Buddhism in Tibet. The analytical list of contents in 26 pages is a resume of every item discussed in the Tibetan text. It is a veritable translation of the Tibetan text. Prof. Lokesh Chandra has added a detailed index of 33 pages so that every detail can be located at a glance.;For the last hundred years it has been a vade-mecumfor the study of the rise and development of Buddhism both in India and in Tibet. It has been out of print for decades. This reprint with a continuous pagination for ready reference and a newly prepared detailed index at the end of part II is a rich sourcebook for Buddhist studies in their multiple aspects, such as art and philosophy, sociology and history. Sumpa-khampo chronicles the flow of Buddhism throbbing with intense life, in new trends born in the pilgrimage to spiritual yearnings. Printed Pages: 659. 113532

India Policy Forum 2008–09 (Volume 5) comprises papers and highlights of the discussions from the fifth India Policy Forum (IPF) conference, held on July 15-16, 2008, in New Delhi.
