The Meaning of General Theoretical Sociology: Tradition and Formalization
Cambridge University Press; Cambridge, UK; 1989; 0521372585; First Edition; Hard Cover; Fine; Fine; 16 Cms x 24 Cms
This book sets out a generative structuralist conception of general theoretical sociology; its philosophy, its problems, and its methods. The field is defined as a comprehensive research tradition with many intersecting subtraditions that share conceptual components. The focus is on formalization and unification as processes that can help advance the state of theory today. An integrative philosophy of the field is set out in terms of a process worldview, with a focus on generativity in explanation and a conception of the structure of theories as hierarchical meaning control systems. This philosophy is implemented in two phases. In the first phase, Professor Fararo defines the core problems of theoretical sociology in the context of setting out and illustrating the logic of a nonlinear dynamical social systems framework. A critical analysis of the outcome of this phase then leads, in the second phase, to formal treatments of action principles and structural analysis. A variety of traditions are drawn upon to treat theoretical problems of order and integration, as well as to examine searchingly problems of formalization and unification in theoritical sociology. Contents List of figures and tables; Preface; Introduction; 1. A philosophy of general theoretical sociology; 2. Dynamical social systems and the key problems; 3. Action theory and social order; 4. Structuralism unification; Summary; Notes; References; Index of names; Index of subjects. Printed Pages: 401. 006820

The World is Flat: The Globalized World in the Twenty-First Century
Penguin; New Delhi, India; 2006; 0141022728; Reprint; Paperback; New; 13 Cms x 20 Cms
From internationally renowned, Pulitzer Prize-winning New York Times columnist Thomas Friedman comes a bold and inspiring picture of how the world has changed since the dawn of the millennium – and the new era that awaits us. The beginning of the twenty-first century will be remembered, Friedman argues, not for military conflicts or political events, but for a whole new age of globalization – a ‘flattening’ of the world. The explosion of advanced technologies now means that suddenly knowledge-pools and resources have connected all over the planet, leveling the playing field as never before, so that each one of us is potentially an equal – and competitor – of the other. The world is wired so that Indian accountants or software engineers can now share an idea, team their skills or compete head-on for work with their US or European counterparts. Professionals everywhere, from China to Australia to Costa Rica, can work from home as if they were in offices next door to each other. The rules of the game have changed forever – but does this ‘death of distance’, which requires us all to run faster in order to stay in the same place, mean the world has got too small and too flat too fast for us to adjust? Friedman brilliantly demystifies the exciting, often bewildering, global scene unfolding before our eyes, one which we sense but barely yet understand. With his inimitable ability to translate complex foreign policy and economic issues, he explains how this flattening of the world happened; what it will mean for countries, communities and individuals; and how governments and societies can - and must - adapt. The World is Flat is the most timely and essential update on globalization, its successes and its discontents, powerfully illuminated by a world-class writer. Printed Pages: 608. 019837

A Theological Response to Special Economic Zones and Livelihood in India (Christian Heritage Rediscovered: 13)
Christian World Imprints/B.R. Publishing Corporation; New Delhi, India; 2015; 9789351480525; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New;
The book mainly discusses the pittalls of dominant economic paradigm, in which one of the major policies that has accelerated neo-liberal economic agenda is Special Economic Zone (SEZ). It brings into limelight the adverse influence of SEZ especially on the livelihood of Small Farmers and Agricultural Labourers. Because of SEZ they can no more have access to land, water and forests which provides them life sustaining products. Based on facts and figures, the author asserts that creation of SEZ in India is mainly at the cost of farming land and livelihood of farming communities.This book brings out the intensity of the destruction caused through empirical evidences based on the field studies done by the author in two States, Uttar Pradesh and Tamil Nadu. This eye opener research work is meant not only for policy makers but also for lay people to make them understand the negative side of SEZ, though they were introduced for economic growth.The main agenda of biblical theological understanding of the economy is to ensure livelihood to each and every person. So, the author aims to study the impact of SEZ. vis-a-vis biblical theological understanding by supplementing Appendices and providing a detailed Bibliography at the end to amplify the radius of readers' understanding.Printed Pages: 184. 106397

Free Will: A Very Short Introduction
Oxford University Press; New Delhi, India; 2004; 0192853589; First Edition; Paperback; New; New; 11 Cms x 18 Cms
Every day we seem to make and act upon all kinds of free choices - some of them trivial, and some so consequential that they may change the course of our life, or even the course of history. But are these choices really free? Or are we compelled to act the way we do by factors beyond our control? Is the feeling that we could have made different decisions just an illusion? And if our choices are not free, why should we be held morally responsible for our actions? This Very Short Introduction, written by a leading authority on the subject, looks at a range of issues surrounding this fundamental philosophical question, exploring it from the ideas of the Greek and medieval philosophers through to the thoughts of present-day thinkers. It provides a interesting and incisive introduction to this perennially fascinating subject. Printed Pages: 144 with 15 b/w illustrations. 003096

Languages and Nations: The Dravidian Proof in Colonial Madras
Yoda Press; New Delhi, India; 8190363409; Reprint; Hardcover; New; New;
British rule of India brought together two very different traditions of scholarship on language, producing several intellectual breakthroughs of lasting value. Two of these breakthroughs were especially important: the conceptualisation of the Indo-European language family by Sir William Jones at Calcutta in 1786 - proposing that Sanskrit is related to Persian and languages of Europe - and the conceptualisation of the Dravidian language family of South India by F.W. Ellis at Madras in 1816 - the ""Dravidian proof,"" showing that the languages of South India are related to one another but are not derived from Sanskrit. These concepts are still valid centuries later. In this book, Thomas R. Trautmann continues the examination he began in Aryans and British India (1997). Whereas the previous book focused on Calcutta and Jones, the current volume examines these developments from the vantage of Madras, focusing on Ellis, Collector of Madras, and the Indian scholars with whom he worked at the College of Fort St. George. Making use of the rich colonial record, Trautmann concludes by showing how elements of the Indian anlyses of language have been folded into historical linguistics and continue in the present as unseen but nevertheless living elements of modern history. The Aryan Debate
Oxford University Press; New Delhi, India; 2010; 0195692004; First Edition; Paperback; New; 15 Cms x 23 Cms
Did the Sanskrit-speaking Aryans enter India from Iran or Central Asia, or were they indigenous to India and authors of the Indus Civilization? This question is central to the debate that has informed Indian history writing, and has been strongly contested in public discussions for over a decade. This volume brings together a selection of significant writings since the eighteenth century to illustrate the historical development of the Aryan debate. In a lucid introduction, Trautmann examines three groundbreaking discoveries that led to the debate: the discovery of the Indo-European language family, and the discovery of the Indus Civilization. He has also classified the readings included in this volume along two basic issues-- the relation of the Aryans or Indo-Europeans to the Dravidians, and the relation of the Veda to the Indus Civilization. This selection includes writings by William Jones, who was among the first to articulate the idea of the Indo-European language family, an d by well-known archaeologists, historians, and modern interrogators such as Romila Thapar, Shereen Ratnagar, M B Emeneau, M A Mehendale, and Trautmann himself. Trautmann describes the opposing interpretations in their political context, demonstrating clearly why the Aryan debate is so highly charged and contentious. The collection highlights the successful conjunction of archaeology, historiography, and philology in what forms one of the most controversial issues in the Indian public domain. This book is important for teachers and students of ancient Indian history, archaeology, linguistics, and sociology. Due to the prominence of this debate in the public sphere, the volume will also interest journalists, anthropologists, and the informed general audience. Printed Pages: 333. 021546

Very little literature is available on western Himalayas and Ladakh and this book is a narrative of travels undertaken by the author on foot covering a very large part of the Himalayas and Tibet, starting from Simla and ending at Jammu. The author travelled the length and breadth of the Shivalik hills, going deep into Tibet and crossing over to Ladakh, Gilgit and Kashmir. The book is a treat on the description of the area covered by the author, its natural beauty, the shrubs and plants which are found in abundance, besides the geographical and geological details, and the history and ethnography of different races which inhabit this vast area. Being valuable the book will be a welcome addition to the very scanty material available on western Tibet and Ladakh. Printed Pages: 515 with 2 maps. 031055

Chapter two analyzes Sarvodaya as an Utopian Model for stimulating and guiding socio-historical change. The various aspects of people-oriented Economy examined in chapter three show that Sarvodaya economy based on "Small is possible" and "Small is beautiful" is a viable economic alternative in India and a model that is relevant even for the West. Gandhi's Experiments with village-ashram being the locus of his liberative praxis, chapter four examines ashram to village as a Gandhian model, a realizing experiment of Sarvodaya. Chapter five considers Sarvodaya as continuation of the legacy mainly by Vinoba Bhave and Jayaprakash Narayan after Gandhi's death. Sarvodaya's close link with Indian Theology of liberation and Sarvodaya's ecological implications are discussed in chapter six. As an ongoing Utopian dialectic, Sarvodaya is being realized and yet to be realized; its realization opens up new possibilities of realization and in this Sense Sarvodaya has great potential for realization and is realistic Utopia.Printed Pages: 330. 106053

Gandhi as Disciple and Mentor
Cambridge University Press; Cambridge, UK; 2007; 8175964324; First Edition; Paperback; New; 155 x 230 Mm
Thomas Weber’s book comprises a series of biographical reflections about people who influenced Gandhi, and those who were, in turn, influenced by him. While the previous literature has tended to focus on Gandhi’s political legacy, Weber’s book explores the spiritual, social and philosophical resonances of these relationships, and it is with these aspects of the Mahatma’s life in mind, that the author selects his central protagonists. These include friends such as Henry Polak and Hermann Kallenbach, who are not as well known as those usually cited, but who left a deep impression nevertheless, and motivated some of Gandhi’s major life changes. Conversely, the work of luminaries such as E.F. Schumacher and Gene Sharp reveal the Mahatma’s influence in arenas which are not traditionally associated with his thinking. Weber’s book offers new and intriguing insights into the life and thought of one of the most significant figures of the twentieth century. Contents Preface 1. Introduction 2. Gandhi influenced 3. The Shanti Sena: Philosophy, History and Action
Orient BlackSwan; New Delhi, India; 2009; 8125036830; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New; 15 Cms x 23 Cms
The recent large-scale communal disturbances in India have prompted some older Gandhians to voice the opinion that the time may have come to reactivate the Shanti Sena, Mahatma Gandhi’s Peace Army, that did impressive work in promoting communal harmony between the late 1950’s and the mid-1970s. Although the idea of a Shanti Sena was considered to be of fundamental importance by Gandhi, he had little success in setting it up in his lifetime. It took the foresight and efforts of Vinoba Bhave and Jayaprakash Narayan, and the organising ability of Narayan Desai. The history of this peace army that they brought into life and directed is not only an inspiring one, it is also important, given the rise in sectarian violence in India and the recent growth of international peace teams that looks to the Sena for motivation and guidance. Sena members worked in conflict resolution at the grassroots level and undertook peace missions during riots, convinced dacoits to turn themselves into authorities , carried out relief work following wars, experimented with nonviolent defence, conducted nonviolence training camps and even played a role in unarmed peacekeeping work in the international sphere. Relying on interviews with key participants and archival material, this thought-provoking work contributes greatly to the study of a unique experiment in practical nonviolence. This is the first study of its kind that has chronicled in such detail the activities and history of the Shanti Sena during its most active years, and discussed the prospects for its reinvigoration. Going Native: Gandhi's Relationship With Western Women
Lotus/Roli Books; New Delhi, India; 8174368205; Softcover; New;
Gandhi's relationship with women has proved irresistibly fascinating to many, but it is surprising how little scholarly work has been undertaken on his attitudes to and relationships with women. Going Native details Gandhi's relationship with Western women, including those who inspired him, worked with him, supported him in his political activities in South Africa, or helped shape his international image. Of particular note are those women who 'went native' to live with Gandhi as close friends and disciples, those who were drawn to him because of a shared interest in celibacy, those who came seeking a spiritual master, or came because of mental confusion. Some joined him because they were fixated on his person rather than because of an interest in his social programme. Through these fascinating women, we get a different insight into Gandhi, who encouraged them to come and then was often captivated, and at times exasperated, by them. Printed Pages: 406. 108531

Gandhi, Gandhism and the Gandhians
Lotus/Roli Books; New Delhi, India; 8174364684; Hardcover; New; New;
Mahatma Gandhi and his philosophy of truth and non-violence have intrigued the world for decades. Looking at the Western and Indian influences that had gone into making Gandhi the Mahatma, and the central importance of Gandhi to non-violent activism, these essays reclaim the power of truth and non-violence, which can still change the destinies of people and nations. In this collection, Weber discusses Gandhi, his ideology, and how India and the rest of the world is interpreting and reinterpreting the Mahatma. The doctrine of conflict resolution theory, new environmentalism, peace research, deep ecology, and Buddhist economics based on Gandhian principles renews the world's belief in Mahatma and his teachings for our lives and our times. We all wish to gain greater understanding of ourselves. This ideal follow-up to the author's extremely popular Buddhism for Beginners explains in clear and simple language the essence of Buddhist philosophy and psychology, together with practical tools for immediate implementation in our daily lives. We all want to have good relationships with others. Chodron offers practical techniques to help us gain a more spacious perspective on relationships, whether they be between lovers, parent and child, employer and employee, friends, or spiritual teacher and student. Guidelines are given for how to practice, freeing ourselves from habitually blaming others for our problems, and learning to be on the spot and take responsibility for our lives. This book describes how our mind/heart, not the external world, is the ultimate source of our happiness. We learn how to look at people and situations in an entirely new light. The book concludes with a discussion of common misconceptions about Buddhism. The author's down-to-earth language and examples invite us to not only engage the material, but to implement it in our own lives. The author's open-minded approach makes this book suitable for Buddhists and non-Buddhists alike. Printed Pages: 228. 010938

How to Free Your Mind: The Practice of Tara the Liberator
Snow Lion Publications; Ithaca, New York, USA; 2013; 155939398X; First Edition; Paperback; New; 16 x 24 Cm
Tara, the feminine embodiment of enlightened activity, is a Buddhist deity whose Tibetan name means "liberator," signaling her ability to liberate beings from the delusion and ignorance that keep them trapped in ever-recurring patterns of negativity. She embodies a challenge—to transform our minds and become like her, whose tranquility, compassion, and wisdom make her so beautiful—but one that is profoundly nurturing. In the author's words, "We can relax in her presence and look at ourselves honestly, knowing that Tara will not judge, reject, or abandon us due to our shortcomings. Like a mother, she sees her child's potential—in this case, our spiritual potential or Buddha-nature—and wants to nurture it." Ven. Chodron describes a simple meditation on Tara, explaining its benefits and its application to daily life. She then presents two well-loved praises to Tara, together with reflections on their meanings for modern practitioners. Included here are the "Homage to the Twenty-one Taras," verses that are frequently chanted in Tibetan monasteries and homes, and "A Song of Longing for Tara, the Infallible," by Lama Lobsang Tenpey Gyaltsen. Good Karma: How to Create the Causes of Happiness
Shambhala Publication/TBI; New Delhi, India; 2016; 1569570450; Softcover; New;
Why do things happen the way they do in our lives? How do we create the causes for a happy life? The Buddhist practice of mind training gives us the answer to these questions: it involves overcoming our self-centered attitude and replacing it with an attitude that cherishes others. This, in turn, leads us to act in ways that naturally lead away from suffering and toward happiness-in short, to create good karma. Thubten Chodron offers a commentary on one of the great Tibetan Buddhist poems, The Wheel of Sharp Weapons, which shows, clearly and practically, how to eliminate the causes of anxiety, fear, and depression and to create the causes of joyful liberation for oneself and all others. The Dalai Lamas of Tibet
Roli Books; New Delhi, India; 2004; 8174360859; First Edition; Hard Cover; New; New; 9 x 11 Inches
Nestling amidst the great Himalays, the tiny kingdom of Tibet evokes images of monasteries, meditating monks, Buddhism and towering above them all, the Dalai Lama. The Tibetan diaspora is perhaps the only community in the world today wherein the spiritual head also dons the mantle of political leadership. Traversing the road backwards to the fifteenth century when Gedun Drub became the First Dalai Lama, over the centuries, the role of the Dalai Lama only grew in stature - with the Great Fifth and the Great Thirteenth, in particular, each proving to be an 'ocean of wisdom', a living testimony to the title conferred upon them. Of sizeable contemporary interest and interspersed with rare archival photographs, The Dalai Lamas of Tibet is an empathetic look at the spiritual influence that continues to guide Tibetans today. 31777 Thuken Losang Chokyi Nyima; Translated By Geshe Lhundub Sopa; Edited By Roger R. Jackson
The Crystal Mirror of Philosophical Systems: A Tibetan Study of Asian Religious Thought
Wisdom Publications; Boston, USA; 2010; 0861714644; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New; 16 x 24 Cm
The Crystal Mirror of Philosophical Systems by Thuken Losang Chokyi Nyima (1737–1802), is arguably the widest-ranging account of religious philosophies ever written in pre-modern Tibet. Like most Tibetan texts on philosophical systems, this work covers the major schools of India, both Buddhist and non-Buddhist, but then goes on to discuss in detail the entire range of Tibetan traditions as well, with separate chapters on the Nyingma, Kadam, Kagyu, Shije, Sakya, Jonang, Geluk, and Bon schools. Not resting there, Thuken goes on to describe the major traditions of China—Confucian, Daoist, and the multiple varieties of Buddhist—as well as those of Mongolia, Khotan, and even Shambhala. The Crystal Mirror of Philosophical Systems is unusual, too, in its concern not just to describe and analyze doctrines, but to trace the historical development of the various traditions. The Crystal Mirror of Philosophical Systems is an eloquent and erudite presentation exploring the religious history and philosophical systems of an array of Asian Cultures—and offering evidence that the serious and sympathetic study of the history of religions has not been a monopoly of Western scholarship. Asymmetrical Threat Perceptions in India-China Relations
Oxford University Press; New Delhi, India; 0198095953; Hardcover; New; New;
The rise of India and China as the two Asian superpowers has been a dominant feature of twenty-first century world politics. For decades, both nations have been fiercely trying to expand their own influence in South Asia, resulting in deep-rooted tensions in their relations. This has had a far-reaching effect over regional security and is seen as a decisive factor in reshaping the international order. Why are China and India not able to develop a long term, stable, and friendly relationship? Shedding light on this important question, this book, part of the Oxford International Relations in South Asia series, provides a new perspective for understanding India-China relations. It examines the chief impediments to a stable relationship?the nuclear issue, the border problem, the Tibet issue, regional competition and cooperation, and India-China relations in the global context. The author observes that the asymmetry in threat perceptions of the two nations is responsible for instability in their bilateral relations, and the prospect of forging closer political links hinges on the convergence of the security perceptions of both sides. The Denudation
Niyogi Books; New Delhi, India; 9789383098675; Softcover; New;
Sujoy Banerjee has been a man ‘untouched by sin’. There was a time when his hands were dedicated to a life with paint, canvas and brush. But then, the same hands began to orchestrate one murder after another. Were these killings really necessary? And did Sujoy Banerjee commit sin through these acts? He took it upon himself to rid the world of ‘filth’. To destroy darkness with a missionary zeal and the suaveness of a master craftsman. After all, was it a sin to kill in self-defence? In the course of time, Sujoy stands facing an unimaginable moment of life when his own flesh and blood – his daughter – breaks social norms and passionately desires him. How does he tide over that agonising chapter? Like the hero of a classical tragedy he lays bare his heart, his sinews and soul as the world around him crumbles to a sorry heap. In this soul- searching novel, Tilottama Majumder deftly traverses the various dim and dark alleyways of human psychology and analyses the existence and nonexistence of love and sin in a world of crime and lust.Printed Pages: 268. 106544

Political Culture and Economy in Eighteenth-Century Bengal: Networks of Exchange, Consumption and Communication
Orient BlackSwan; New Delhi, India; 2014; 8125052674; Hardcover; New; New;
Books on eighteenth-century Bengal talk of how the economy declined when the British took over the revenue administration. This volume is different from other books written on this period because it breaks away from the well-trodden path of eighteenth-century historiography that looks at the period as one that saw a general decline. It explores the major components of the distributive economic networks of markets, overland and riverine communication systems and consumption. It analyses their interaction with the state, both during the Nizamat and the early years of the rule of the English East India Company in Bengal.Printed Pages: 448. 101932

They trace the story from the hurried post-9/11 decision to invade onwards, explaining how ambitious development plans failed to bear fruit, how muddled Western policies allowed Afghans to grow more opium poppies than ever before-and how, despite all promises, life has become worse rather than better for many Afghan citizens.Printed Pages: 312. 101984

The Archaeology of Contact in Settler Societies
Cambridge University Press; Cambridge, UK; 2004; 0521796822; First Edition; Paperback; Brand New; 18 Cms x 25 Cms
Several decades of research into the archaeology of contact in North America have laid the foundations for the global exploration of the archaeology of European colonization. It is significant, however, that archaeologists, unlike historians and geographers, have yet to develop a global account of contact and its consequences. This edited work presents case studies from nations developed from British settlement so as to allow historical archaeologists to examine differences and similarities between the histories of modern colonial societies world-wide. Written by an international team of experts, the work shows that historical archaeologies can assume marvellously different and suggestive forms when examined from the periphery. Furthermore, the imperatives of the periphery could result in different perspectives on North American and European archaeological contexts. The work also examines the role of a global vision of the historical archaeology of colonialism in providing a new basis for the evolution of the ‘nation’. Contents 1. The archaeology of contact in settler societies Tim Murray; Part I. Diverse Contacts and Consequences: 2. Beads, bodices and regimes of value: from France to North America, c. 1500–c. 1650 Laurier Turgeon; 3.
