Mysticism and Symbolism in Aitareya and Taittiriya Aranyakas
Gyan Books Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 1988; 8121200946; Hardcover; New; New;
The entire Vedic Literature has, broadly speaking, four different and distinct stages of development over a period of thousands of years since the very pre-historic times. The Aranyakas or the Forest Texts constitute the third important class of literary work. Despite constituting a landmark and rather a Turning Point in the remarkably philosophic thought of the entire Vedic literature, the Aranyakas have, somehow, attracted a Little thought of the Vedic scholars/researchers. Whatever Research had been undertaken in this branch of Vedic literature, it has, invariably, been perfunctory or at the most touched only on in significant aspect of the other wise, rich philosophic contents of the Hermit Texts. A significant feature of this book is that it undertakes a comprehensive analysis of the most intricate Spiritual mysteries of the universe. Such deep-seated intricacies of Philosophy have been extricated from a plethora of ritualistic moss and characteristically archaic Language of the texts under study. The Supreme-Being who transcends the duality of subject and object cannot, ipso facto be a field of clear definition and demonstration, but inspite of such inherent limitations, The Author has lucidly deciphered. His Essential characteristics including his omniscience/omnipresence, identity between the Universal and individual souls, permeation of the latter even up to the ends of the hair in the human body etc. even a cursory glance through the work reveals that these two Principal Aranyakas are immensely rich in their Metaphysical contents. The author has, rather boldly, brought out some of the then prevailing social superstitions like observing of odd omens, their ill-effects and pseudo-mysticism so much so that even the points of comparison and contrast between the two Aranyakas under Study have also been meticulously, but briefly brought out. In short, the book presents a panoramic view of the Aryan culture including social conceptions in that hoary past.Printed Pages: 250. 105699

Fishes of India
World Wildlife Fund in association with Oxford University Press; New Delhi, India; 2008; 019568799X; First Edition; Paperback; New; 15 x 23 Cm
Did you know that suckerfish can attach themselves onto other fishes to get a free ride? Or that the markings on the young Koran fish resemble the sacred inscriptions of the Koran? How some sharks give birth to their young rather than lay eggs, and how anglerfish actually stalk their prey with their stub-like fins and then ‘bait’ like fishermen! Fishes of India introduces us to the little known world of fishes, both fresh water and marine, found in India. Over 130 varieties are described in detail through numerous line drawings and photographs. A colour section on fishes gives us an unusual insight into their natural habitat. Sections on the uses of fish, a glossary, and a list of the common, scientific, and vernacular names of fishes provide additional information for interested readers. 024437

Backyard Wildlife: Diary of NeigHardcoverourhood Creatures
Times Group Books; New Delhi, India; 2011; 9789380942643; First Edition; Softcover; New;
This delightful book brought back childhood memories of the hours and days I spent observing the ants, skinks, squirrels, parakeets and sunbirds in my urban neigHardcoverourhood. The naturalist skills I picked up from this 'idle' pastime paved the way for a career as a wildlife filmmaker years later. Many forms of wildlife manage to coexist in our backyards even today despite the rapid pace of urbanization. Ail that is required to enjoy their presence are a pair of sharp eyes, an inquisitive mind and a copy of Backyard Wildlife. I have no doubt that this perceptive and much needed book will bring joy to many and change the lives of a few forever.Printed Pages: 131. 104544

A classical epic chronicling the love of Shakuntala and Dushyanta, the silent crusade of the Mahatma who, when encountered by French custom officials, had little of value to declare including his “Reputation”, the defiance of Bal Gangadhar Tilak who brought the Ganapati Puja out onto the streets and a man called J.R.D. Tata who flew a single engine, de Havilland Puss Moth from Karachi to Bombay with regular load of mail. This and several other facts make up this book which showcases the wonder that is India or Bhara, written by one of India’s foremost journalists, B.G. Verghese, this book takes a hitherto unknown look at India’s ancient heritage, its diverse people and faiths, wandering minstrels, travelers and philosophers. Tomorrow's India: Another Tryst with Destiny
Penguin/Viking; New Delhi, India; 2006; 0670058637; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New; 16 x 24 Cm
Almost sixty years ago, Nehru spoke of India’s tryst with destiny at the dawn of Independence. In the Constitution of the new republic that was framed a few years later, the goals and values of that vision were unfolded. How far have we progressed since then and what is it that destiny now holds for tomorrow’s India? The present volume of essays surveys the scene past-forward and paints a picture of what has been accomplished and what remains to be done. There is pride and satisfaction in particular over India’s vibrant democracy and progress in many directions. This is nonetheless tinged with concern, for there are nagging problems of governance and shortfalls in human and infrastructure development, as well as social deficits in the matter of rights, corruption and sectoral and regional imbalances. All these must be squarely faced and speedily overcome if the nation is to grow in keeping with its increasingly recognized potential as a rising great power. It has been widely forecast that within thirty years India, together with the United States and China, will constitute the three largest economies in the world. The wellsprings of growth are there. However, as more than one author points out, mere economic and technological growth is not enough. In this globalizing world the market is not all. The citizen must march hand in hand with the consumer in a sharing and caring society. The twenty-four essayists who write of Tomorrow’s India do so in celebration of the 125th anniversary of their alma mater, Delhi’s St Stephen’s College. Their themes relate to diplomacy and security; the economy and technology; governance; society’s watchdogs; ideology and values; social change; and culture and heritage. The authors represent a galaxy of public figures, academics, professionals and social workers. What they have to say makes compelling reading, with penetrating insights and critiques. Contributors include George Abraham, Mani Shankar Aiyar, Rukmini Banerji, Ranjit Bhatia, Ravi Dayal, Gopalkrishna Gandhi, Sagarika Ghose, Navina Haidar Haykel, Prem Shankar Jha, Manoj Joshi, Mukul Kesavan, Arun Kumar, Sarwar Lateef, Arun Maira, Harsh Mander, Deepak Nayyar, Bunker Roy, Vikramjit Sen, Kapil Sibal, Dilip Simeon, K. Bible History of the Old and New Testaments: With a Compendium of Church History (Christian Classics Revived: 2)
Christian World Imprints/B.R. Publishing Corporation; New Delhi, India; 2013; 8192512177; Reprinted; Hardcover; New; New;
The Book provides a comprehensive coverage in relation to History of Bible, and of Churches. It includes sequential timelines, Biblical facts, and overviews of History of both BC (Before Christ) and AD (Anno Domini). The Author encircles this phenomenal account of History in two different phases. The First phase is the summation of writings enshrining Bible History. This phase covers the historical account in Five Eras ranging from 4004 B.C. to 1 A.D. The First Era talks thoroughly on the process of the `Creation of the World' to the `Dispersion of Mankind'. The Second Era brings out the year's witnessing the `Call of Abram' to the `Birth of Moses'. Then, in the Third Era the whole picture, till the `Death of Solomon' unfolds. The Fourth Era starts up with the `Death of Solomon' and ends at the `Babylonian Captivity'. The momentous period of BC is covered in the Fifth Era; from the `Restoration of the Jews' to the `Birth of Christ'. In furtherance of the Christ Birth, there is also a synopsis highlighting `Life of Our Lord Jesus Christ'.The Second phase is an elaborate Compendium of Church History by Rev. John A. Dillon. This Phase covers a vast period, that is to say, Ancient Times, Middle Ages and Modern Times (A.D. 33 to the then present day, i.e., A.D. 1916). All the respective Times have been detailed by its demarcation in Epochs. Each Epoch covers a relevant time period, meticulously submitting History of that particular age. The period of Ancient Times starts with the `Foundation of the Church' and ends with `Coronation of Charlemagne'. Period of Middle Ages begins with the `Restoration of the Western Empire' and elaborates till the `Rise of Protestantism'. Lastly, the then period of Modern Times exhaustively spells out from the `Rise of Protestantism', the `French Revolution' and goes upto A.D. 1916.As Rev. J. L. (John Lancaster) Spalding, the then Bishop of Peoria, himself concluded in the Preface of the Book, revealing the truth about Author's sole aim "to supply Catholic schools with a complete text-book of sacred History". Further, the Author believes that Christianity as a religion cannot have any right theory and it can be understood only when it is clearly defined by means of authentic History. This piece of Work is an endeavor to rightly bring to light the deeds rather than the thoughts of Christian Religion.This is an exceptional and a complete Book in itself as it encapsules Bible and Church History; thereby covering 6000 years of heritage (4004 B.C. to A.D. 1916). It incorporates the Origin, History, and Development on the concerned subjects in layman language; also equipped with a quick reference guide in the form of Pronouncing Vocabulary for beginners and novice learners. It covers subjects like History, Christianity, Theology in general, and Biography of Lord Jesus Christ. The Book, is a must read for Christian Laity, Church Clergies, General Readers, Students and Researchers.Printed Pages: 336. 106431

The Teaching of the Upanishads
New Bharatiya Book Corporation; New Delhi, India; 2008; 8183150888; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New;
I read the Upanisads after I has finished my University education. One of the doctrines held in common by all ancient scholars was that there was no contradiction between the different portions of the Vedas which include the Upanisads. But practically all the western scholars, proceeding on the theory of the evolution of knowledge, have asserted that there is conflict between the Upanisads and the earlier Vedas. Thus for example they say that the Upanisads have denied the existence of the minor gods and the efficacy of Vedic sacrifices.On the other hand in practically all the important Upanisads there are many passages which refer to the existence of the minor gods and assert the efficacy of Vedic sacrifices in enabling the performer to attain heaven. It seemed to me that in these respects the prejudice of the western scholars against minor gods and Vedic sacrifices was wrongly ascribed by them to the rsis of the Upanisads. 104116

21 Popular Sports and Games: Rules and Regulations
Goodwill Publishing House; New Delhi, India; 8172451229; Softcover; New;
Although with the growth of modern technology many previous laws have become rather redundant yet the infinite human inglinity to exploit the loop-holes in the formulated rules and laws has made their formulation almost a continuous process. No matter how fast one tries to walk abreast with the latest sets of rules some obsolescence invariably creeps in. So while it can't be said that all the rules and the laws of the games and sports described in the book are the latest, it can be proudly claimed that it covers most of the major innovations or changes that have appeared in the rules.As for the techniques of the various games included in the book, the attempt has been made to dwell only on the basics and not on their names - for there is no end to them. Of course, some of the names have also been illustrated in order to help the reader comprehend other similar variations. The paucity of the space forced this strategy to be adopted, otherwise this book would have become a tone of gargantuan proportions. The emphasis has only been on selecting the basic techniques which are of supreme importance to a particular gameAs far as the selection of the games and sports in this book is concerned the basic criterion has been their popularity as also their availability in this part of the world. We have slummed those games whose mere paraphernalia would cost the player a couple of games apart from their arena's scores availability. We have .tried to cater to the taste of almost all the categories of the sports loving persons. So if you have the Lords' first choice-Cricket, Tennis or Golf - you also find the popular games of the rural origin like Kabaddi and Kho-Kho, besides various aquatic and athletic games. Certain games like Judo and Kung-fu whose practical importance in the violence-prone would can't be denied have been especially dealt with. In fact the book has been devised keeping the foreknowledge of the reader in view. That is why some lesson known games have been dealt with at length while some will known games and sports have been described in brief.How far have we succeeded in our attempt is what our readers would decide. But we can make one bold claim right now. This book might not make many Olympians but most certainly this would make many sports lovers appreciate their favourite games much better than they ever did before.Lastly, the author conveys his deep gratitude to Chaudhary Sahib and Rajneesh ji of the Goodwill Publishing House, who provided him all help to compile this book. Lokikanyayasahasri
Pratibha Prakashan; Delhi, India; 2011; 8177022555; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New; 15 x 23 Cm
The Philosophical literature like Veda, Vyakarana, Nyaya, Mimansa, and Vedanta texts have extensively utilised the loka-nyayas and without a thorough knowledge and understanding of the implications of these Nyayas, interpretation of any text is almost impossible. Through the employment of the loka-nyayas abstract ideas and concepts are made easy to grasp. They are also employed to prove a point or justify something, to refute or establish a theory, choosing suitable and widely accepted and verifiable illustrations from day to day behaviour. The present collection contains exactly one thousand maxims with explanation in Sanskrit and a complete index alphabetically arranged with page number. All the related nyayas, which can be employed in a similar situation, are given in a sequence with different serial number. It also contains a critical introduction in English with a detailed note on all the studies available in print till date. The volume, in short, makes an excellent Book of reference for traditional intellectual deliberations, beneficial in interpreting a sastric text, and a hand-book for making a learned speech-to be preserved by one and all.Printed Pages: 408. 101315

Gandhi a Prophecy
D.K. Printworld (P) Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2014; 8124607559; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New; 15 x 23 Cm
This book written almost immediately after Gandhi’s demise suggests a fresh view of his struggle to achieve “peace in the human home” embedded as it is in Mallik’s socio-philosophical theory of conflict and its avoidance. Further in the light of the author’s view of the dynamics of history, it reads the life and death of Mahatma Gandhi as more than a mere episode in the milieu of traditional value: it is projected as a significant event which opens up new and unprecedented possibilities for the future of man.As an original and thought-provoking perspective it should invoke the interest of Gandhians, philosophers and historians alike.Printed Pages: 128. 100338

Globalisation and Economic Development
Kalpaz Publications/Gyan Books Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2015; 9789351281269; Hardcover; New; New;
Globalisation is the process of international integration arising from the interchange of world views, products, ideas and other aspects of culture. The term globalisation has been increasingly used since the mid-1980s and especially since the mid-1990s. It is currently a popular and controversial issue, though often remaining a loose and poorly defined concept. Sometimes too comprehensively, the term is used to encompass increases in trade and liberalisation policies as well as reductions in transportation costs and technology transfer. Economic globalisation, the ongoing process of greater economic interdependence among countries , is reflected in the increasing amount of cross-border trade in goods and services, the increasing volume of international financial flows, and increasing flows of labour . Economic development is the sustained, concerted actions of policy makers and communities that promote the standard of living and economic health of a specific area. It is a wealth spent on country 's population. Economic development can also be referred to as the quantitative and qualitative changes in the economy. The scope of it includes the process and policies by which a nation improves the economic, political, and social well-being of its people. It is hoped that the present edition of this book will be beneficial to all concerned of the society in general and students, lawyers, advocates, academicians, human rights institutions, researchers and NGOs working in economics finance field, in particular.Printed Pages: 331. 106144

Vulnerable Children: Human Rights Perspectives
Kalpaz Publications/Gyan Books Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2015; 9789351281177; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New;
Child is a human between the stages of birth and teenage years. The legal definition of child generally refers to a minor, otherwise known as a person younger than the age of majority. Africa is the only continent with a region-specific child rights instrument. The African Charter on the Rights and Welfare of the Child (ACRWC) is an important tool for advancing children's right s. While building on the same basic principles as the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child, the AU Children's Charter highlights issues of special importance in the African context. India has the largest number of children in the world. India's heritage of a stable family life and traditional joint family system helped children grow into an atmosphere of warmth and affection into a secure future. Children's rights are human rights for children. Human rights are basic standards to which every person is entitled to survive and develop indignity. The United Nations set a universal standard for human rights with the adopt ion of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights in 1948. Since t hen, a number of human rights treaties have been developed to recognize the basic rights of all persons. Children have these rights, too. Children (under age 18) also have specific rights, recognized in the 1989 Convention on the Rights of the Child, given their vulnerability and dependence. All children's human right s apply to all children at all times, without exception. The provision and protection of children's Convent ion rights is the primary responsibility of governments at all levels and realising the promise of the Convention is an ongoing, progressive commitment. International human rights treaties are developed through negotiation among governments. United Nations Member States produce a commonly acceptable set of standards for the treatment of people by their governments. It is hoped that the present edition of this book will be beneficial to all concerned of the society, in general and students, lawyers, advocates, academicians, human rights institutions, researchers and NGOs working in labour economics field, in particular. Contents of this book are Children Rights-An Overview ; Street Children; Orphan Children; Child Labour; Bonded Labour; Disable Children; Slum Children; Child Trafficking & Urban Beggar.Printed Pages: 327. 106151

Place Names in Kashmir
Indira Gandhi National Centre for the Arts/Bhartiya Vidya Bhavan; New Delhi, India; 2000; 8172761708; Softcover; New;
In the present study the writers have traced a few hundred place-names in Kashmir. The attempt to process and classify them according to their origin reveals through the sidelights many interesting facts of significance to micro-history, social behaviour, anthropology, etc. More importantly, such names indicate the growth lines of regional languages through semantics, pronunciation and the like. Studies in regional languages would remain incomplete without a working knowledge of the concerned place names.Printed Pages: 250. 101681

Retired but not tired
Lotus/Roli Books; New Delhi, India; 8174365826; Softcover; New;
Retirement is usually perceived as boredom, hopelessness and, virtually, the dead end of one's life. But it is a complete misconception. In fact, retirement is the beginning of another phase of life that can be satisfying and meaningful, even better than the 'productive phase', provided we make some smart choices and follow the right strategies. Like other important things in life, we must have some higher purpose, some goal, or mission in life to fulfil after retiring. Our inspiration and deeds should convince others of how great, wonderful and purposeful retired life can be. Retired But Not Tired, a thought-provoking and useful guide, helps us plan a happy, fulfilling and meaningful life after retirement. A must-read for recent retirees and those wanting to plan ahead. Core of the Yoga Sutras: The Definitive Guide to the Philosophy of Yoga
Harper Thorsons; London, UK; 2013; 0007518269; First Edition; Paperback; New; 16 x 24 Cm
B.K.S. Iyengar has devoted his life to the practice and study of yoga. It was B.K.S. Iyengar's unique teaching style, bringing precision and clarity to the practice, as well as a mindset of 'yoga for all', which has made it into a worldwide phenomenon. His seminal book, 'Light on Yoga', is widely called 'the bible of yoga' and has served as the source book for generations of yoga students around the world. In 'Core of the Yoga Sutras', he applies this same clarity to the philosophical core of yogaThe Yoga Sutras of Patanjali. The Yoga Sutras of Patanjali are 196 aphorisms forming the foundational text of yoga philosophy. Each sutra is short and to the point each being only a line or two long. B.K.S. Iyengar has translated each one, providing an insightful commentary and explanation for modern readers, as well as linking the various themes throughout the sutras to one another. Each sutra is presented as Sanskrit text, transliteration and English translation, followed by B.K.S. Iyengar's unique commentary and authority only he can bring to the work. B.K.S. Iyengar's insight on the sutras show the reader how we can transform ourselves through the practice of yoga, gradually developing the mind, body and emotions, so we can become spiritually evolved. History, Archaeology and Culture of Himachal Pradesh
Agam Kala Prakashan; Delhi, India; 2014; 8173201374; Hardcover; New; New; 19 x 26 Cm
History is fast changing its economic and cultural contours which are positioned on progressives’ path. Its ancient and medieval period had equally great heights in cultural history, which is still hidden on the large national platform. Through this book vast panorama of Himachal Pradesh‘s History Culture and Archaeology have been given an exposure in small measures. The module of its presentation is to keep up the narration separately of its various political units which for time immemorial have been possessing independent identities. In several new publications a hotch-potch technique of amalgamating the history in various political periods is being on the pattern general Indian history and that have produced more confusion rather than cohesion. The book is largely based on the materials scattered in the various work contained in the bibliography as well as on personal experiences, gathered from the locals during various visitations to the gross roots. There can be no two opinions if we uphold that Himachal Pradesh has a unique attraction amongst foreign and Indian scholars and this book unfolds the treasures of this hilly and mountainous state of our country to them as well to the lay readers.Printed Pages: 240. 101527
