The Seeds of War (Mahabharat Series Book Two)
Westland Limited; New Delhi, India; 9789381626863; Softcover; New;
The Seeds of War, Book Two in Ashok Bankers MBA series, introduces us to the elder protagonists of the epic, as well as some of the great loves and lusts, friendships and enmities, politics and self-sacrifice that will lay the seeds that will eventually fester and erupt into the mother of all wars. At first it may seem that the journey is the reward,with seemingly unrelated love stories, fantastical tales of exploits in the heavenly realms, divine pacts and demoniac trysts. But it soon becomes evident that all these form a tapestry revealing the grandeur and glamour of the Kuru Bharata race itself, the growing descendants of the original tribe that established perhaps the greatest and oldest human civilization ever known in recorded history. Their loves and enmities are epic, their stories astonishing, their personalities mercurial. Every page you turn reveals magical new thrills and wonders. As one larger-than-life personality after another strides onstage, the drama ratchets up to thriller level, the arrow swarms begin to fly and conflicts turn ugly as the author of the Ramayana Series once again proves himself the master of epics. 109582

Canakya on Management
Jaico Publishing House; Delhi, India; 8179924084; Softcover; New;
Canakya’s Arthasastra deals with the different aspects of managing a kingdom, including management of men. The principles contained in Canakya’s work have the unique distinction of being used successfully in practice to achieve good results on a sustainable basis. The management principles used in the USA or in Japan are derived from their own cultural background. There exists enough evidence to show that these systems, even when meticulously and earnestly adopted in India, rarely take roots or produce the desired results. We need to look for those principles that make sense in our own social and work culture and which would hopefully deliver better results for all concerned - the customers, the investors, the employees and the society. This book on the management philosophy and practice of Canakya is the author’s earnest attempt to help Indian readership to become familiar with the great work of the First Total Management Guru of the world.Printed Pages: 264. 105522

Bridge on the River Meghna: The Dash to Dhaka (Bangladesh Liberation War 1971)
KW Publishers; New Delhi, India; 2009; 8190743139; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New;
Akhaura was an important Pakistani battalion size strong point located in the close proximity of Agartala, the capital of Tripura state in Eastern India. The Meghna River made the Eastern Sector in East Bengal very difficult to operate through, owing to large water bodies and marshes. In fact, operating from Tripura, Lt Gen Sagat Singh’s 4 Corp’s plans were to liberate maximum territory east of the Meghna in the Liberation War in 1971. The possibility of getting to Dhaka across the broad expanse of the marshy terrain and the mighty Meghna, seemed too far-fetched, but when it quite suddenly happened to come about, it led to the stunning victory in the war.It began with the very convincing success of 57 Mountain Division in the capture of Akhaura. It was a set-piece attack against a Pakistani battalion size strong point. This led to a sudden change in the direct thrust to the Meghna being adopted, using the railway line on an embankment as its axis of advance. A quite unprepared 57 Division, with just two infantry brigades and no worthwhile bridging resources to overcome blown bridges, made bold to go for the Bridge on the River Meghna, leading to the most dramatic success story of the 1971 War. Gen Sagat seized the opportunity by employing helicopters to bypass Pakistani opposition and to dash to Dhaka – the ‘Centre of Gravity’ in the war. It was a stunning victory. In contrast, the Pakistani higher leadership failed to protect Dhaka in the war. Indian and Mukti Bahani innovations led to a convincing success. The general population of Bangladesh and Dhaka, in particular, contributed most significantly to the stunning success. This account has been written 37 years after the Liberation War, following a visit by Indian Veterans to Bangladesh in March 2008. Authencity in battle narrations is difficult, but in this book, we have the step by step narration of the action of the opposite side, obtained from the enemy brigade commander’s book East Pakistan to Bangladesh – Brig Sadullah Khan’s narration of the same events as seen by him, which adds a unique flavour to the story.Printed Pages: 198. 104434

Paintings of the Razmnama: The Book of War
Mapin Publishing; Ahmedabad, India; 8188204501; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New; 22 x 30 Cm
Razmnama or The Book of War is the Persian translation of the great Hindu epic, the Mahabharata. The Mughal Emperor Akbar took a personal interest in the translation project and invited learned men, well-versed with the work, from all over the country to help some of his best Persian scholar-courtiers prepare the most authentic text possible. Once this was complete, master painters at his atelier produced a lavishly illustrated copy for his personal use. Akbar then invited his nobles to get copies often text made for themselves. Out of the three copies made, the three-volume Razmnama in the Birla Academy of Art & Culture, Kolkata, is the only one complete with 81 miniatures. Most of these images are full-page ones and the text bears the name of the scribe and date of completion-1605. the paintings are of great interest to students of Mughal painting as they combine the finest elements of the Mughal court style with the narrative style of storytelling. Some of the most popular Mahabharata stories were chosen by the painters and instead of composing two or three separate paintings they incorporated different stages of narrative details within the frame of a single image. The overall style is refined and clearly follows the court style during the closing years of Akbar's reign. The 1605 Razmnama is a key document for the study of Mughal painting during the beginning of the 17th century. CONTENTS: Introduction; 1. The Making of Razmnama 2. Imaging the Razmnama : The Razmnama Manuscript for Akbar and Other Copies 3. The Birla Razmnama 4. Catalogue of Illustrations. Printed Pages: 192. 015105

The Hoodlum Years
Orient BlackSwan; New Delhi, India; 2016; 8125062815; First Edition; Softcover; New; 14 x 22 Cm
The Hoodlum Years refer to the years of terror and agony that India passed through in the early-mid 1970s and culminated in the Emergency. At the time Ashok Mitra contributed a series of sensitive essays to the Economic and Political Weekly that tellingly and powerfully portrayed the horror of those years. This volume contains a selection of these essays, written during 1972–75 and between January and April 1977.The claustrophobic season of 1972–77, the author feels, ought to be remembered every now and then; there is otherwise a danger of our judgement being distorted by the familiar problem of forgetting.With its honest and detailed analysis, this new edition comes with a Foreword by Prabhat Patnaik. Socio-Historical Context of Pauls Confrontation in Galatians and Christian Identity in a Pluralistic Society
Christian World Imprints/B.R. Publishing Corporation; New Delhi, India; 2017; 9789351481928; Hardcover; New; New;
This book proposes to draw significance of eating together that becomes discernible from the texts. As Paul confronts the issue at Antioch, he stresses certain concerns pertaining to social, religious and ethnic identity in Galatians. Also, Paul's argument focuses on Jewish Law and how does it function in the lives of the both Jewish Christians and non-Jewish Christians.This book has several purposes: the first objective is to understand why Paul confronted to Peter at Antioch. Secondly, in the setting of Antioch's scene, how Paul emphatically declares both his independence from the Jerusalem apostles and the fact that, when they did meet, they agreed on the substance of the gospel and divided their areas of work. Thirdly, how eating together and socio-culture, religious issues related to it affect the identity of individual and community both in Galatians and Indian Context. Fourthly, to understand Christological and missiological framework of Paul and to relocate and redefine the Christian identity in pluralistic Context based on Paul's Gentile Mission. Finally, who serves the best model/example of Christian identity in India, Paul or Peter?All of Paul's confrontations and arguments entreat the church as a community of believers in the Lord Jesus Christ where he focuses on individual liberty. The mutual upbuilding and upholding corporate identity as believers in Christ are the main crux of Paul's confrontation with Peter. Printed Pages: 207. 113685

Sand and Other Stories
Orient BlackSwan; New Delhi, India; 2002; 8125022686; First Edition; Paperback; New;
This book is a translated collection of 3 novellas, spanning three decades of Ashokamitran’s work. The stories are about women trapped by an almost absolute lack of resources (financial, intellectual and emotional). The narrative in all three novellas moves in a series of short scenes, building tension with a relentless layering of detail. The exploitation of these women and their daily struggle against it is exposed in all its terrifying ordinariness. The stories have all the identifiable characteristics of Ashokamitran’s writing—irony, interiority, sensitivity. Printed Pages: 133. 031649

Mole!
Orient BlackSwan; New Delhi, India; 2004; 8125026827; First Edition; Paperback; New;
The fictional events narrated in Mole! – an English translation of Otran, a novel by Ashokamitran – take place within a period of seven months, nearly all of them in the American Midwest. The narrator, a culturally rooted writer from Chennai, is transplanted amidst a motley group of fellow-writers from distant parts of the world, all of them as dangerously dislocated as him. Deprived of the language that has brought them fulfillment and distinction, these writers struggle to retain their place of precarious honour in a strange, unfamiliar and sometimes hostile environment. And in the background looms the endearing, if exasperating, landscape of twentieth-century America. Kalyan Raman’s English translation illumines the subtle, spare strength of Ashokamitran’s prose. Battles Half Won: India's Improbable Democracy
Penguin Books India Pvt. Ltd.; Delhi, India; 2013; 067008428X; Softcover; New;
In this lively collection of essays, Ashutosh Varshney analyses the deepening of Indian democracy since 1947 and the challenges this has created. The overview traces the forging and consolidation of India’s improbable democracy. Other essays examine themes ranging from Hindu nationalism, caste politics and ethnic conflict to the north–south economic divergence and politics of economic reforms. The book offers original insights on several key questions: how federalism has handled linguistic diversity thus far, and why governance and regional underdevelopment will drive the formation of new states now; how coalition making induces ideological moderation in the politics of the BJP; how the political empowerment of the Dalits has not ensured their economic transformation; how the social revolution in the south led to its overtaking the north; and how the 1991 economic reforms succeeded because they affected elite, not mass, politics.Lucid and erudite, Battles Half Won brilliantly portrays the successes and failures of India’s experience in a new, comparative perspective, enriching our understanding of the idea of democracy.Printed Pages: 432. 103440

ICTs and Indian Social Change: Diffusion, Poverty, Governance
Sage Publications; New Delhi, India; 2008; 0761936122; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New;
ICTs and Indian Social Change: Diffusion, Poverty, Governance is the first book of its kind that puts together the optimistic voices of techno-idealists, critical social science perspectives on technology and a range of empirical material on the impact of Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) on the lives of people. The book traces these processes across urban and rural spaces of work, consumption, e-governance, and highlights the new kinds of social identities they are fostering in India. It opens up an arena for dialogue between activists, technologists, policy makers and academia on using ICTs for development. The book is a logical sequel to ICTs and Indian Economic Change: Economy, Work, Regulation that addressed the implications of the growth of ICT-based sectors in India for macro-economic development and industrial efficiency. This volume views the diffusion of ICTs in India primarily in the socio cultural realm. In responding to the pioneering voices of innovators in ICTs, it provides empirical and theoretical assessments and critiques of some of the important though often latent, premises that underlie these powerful initiatives. Welcome to the world of Social Media a territory where users have already created their network. They upload content, 'like' or 'dislike' what they see, and interact with their friends every day, every hour and sometimes every minute! This new segment of a highly expressive audience has defined interests, and is not shy of voicing its opinion. The phenomenal growth of such a population makes it important for brands to be more 'social' than ever before, and 'engage' with their audience to create a positive environment online. This will not only lead to an effective word-of-mouth, but will result in higher sales (especially for product-based companies). This book provides a methodological approach to defining why your brand needs to be online, how to discover what will work for you, and finally, how to engage the right audience. Chanakya Mantra (in Hindi)
Westland Limited; New Delhi, India; 9789381626610; Softcover; New;
Chanakya’s Chant (Hindi) covers not only the life of Chanakya, one of the greatest political strategists in Indian history, but also that of his reincarnation, Gangasagar Mishra. Gangasagar, who lives in a lesser known small town, is in the eyes of the world an ordinary teacher, a Brahmin who lives hand to mouth. However, this is not the truth about the man, who is the reincarnation of the greatest minister to one of the most powerful rulers in the Indian subcontinent, Chanakya. The book is unique in the sense that the stories of the lives of both the protagonists run parallel and are linked by the common thread of their intellect.First, the book depicts a story set in 340 BC, when a Brahmin, in order to avenge his father’s death, plans to overthrow the ruler of his state. For this, he mentors and grooms Chandragupta Maurya, the first ruler of the Maurya dynasty. The book also tells the story of the anonymous Indian Brahmin man who grooms and trains an ambitious girl from Kanpur in Uttar Pradesh, to become the future Prime Minister of this country. It is for all to see if Gangasagar is successful in transforming an ordinary girl into the most important woman in the country.Chanakya’s Chant (Hindi) shows not only the achievements of the great strategist but also his human flaws. He is considered to be a cold, calculating and manipulative mentor. 109576

Chanakya’s Chant is a thrilling novel that tells its readers about a sharp parallel story between two individuals. Chanakya is one of the wisest political strategists to have ever lived in the history of India. The second protagonist is Gangasagar Mishra, who is a rather insignificant Brahmin teacher, who seems to be struggling to make ends meet, but is actually a reincarnation of Chanakya himself.The author gives you an intricately woven plot that is set in two parallel worlds, but is tied together by its two protagonists, namely Chanakya and Gangasagar. A complex yet interesting plot, a taste of many centuries and religions, a touch of terror and a mystery behind Jesus being alive is what goes into The Rozabal Line. Written by Ashwin Sanghi, a thriller fiction writer, this book showcases a cult of visionaries who believe that Jesus escaped crucifixion and lived somewhere in Kashmir, India. With a story well-knit, The Rozabal Line received its title from the Rozabal shrine in India.The story revolves primarily around an American priest, Father Vincent Morgan, who receives visions of Jesus’ crucifixion simultaneously getting dreams of the life he might have lived in the past. While this part of the story grows, a lady finds a box in the library in the place where Mahabharata books were supposed to be kept. And there follows a scream before the lady faints. What lies in the box is a mystery for the readers to discover. This kick-starts the chain of secrets and terror in the story that readers experience. While in one part of the world these events are taking place, on the other side evolve thirteen people forming a terror group named Lashkar-e-Talatashar. A prediction that a new messenger is coming, Egyptian myths, the Aztec prophecy and pieces of Greek mythology, all combine to make this book an intriguing connection between religions and cultures. 109581
