Dara Shikuh: Life and Works
Munshiram Manoharlal Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2013; 8121501601; Reprint; Hardcover; New; New; 15 x 23 Cm
Indian tradition remembers Dara Shikuh not so much as an emperor's son, but as a mystic philosopher. The great dream of his life?a dream shattered by his untimely death?was the brotherhood of all faiths and the unity of mankind. After him the vision of unity was lost in the atmosphere of hatred and rivalry created by the warring sects and religious schools, and even today we are living in the age of religious disintegration. The present volume is the outcome of long years of study and research. Life and Works of Dara Shikuh, the tragic philosopher-prince and inheritor of Akbar's tradition of broadmindedness and religious tolerance, are matters of interest for all serious-minded readers. The Ladder of His Life
KW Publishers; New Delhi, India; 2013; 9789381904855; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New;
The Ladder of his Life is about Air Chief Marshal Idris Latif and his varied experiences as a fighter pilot, as Chief of the Indian Air Force, Governor of Maharashtra and Ambassador to France He is a scion of a family from which several members left eminent positions to devote their lives to follow Mahatma Gandhi. Always a topper during his education and as a flyer as recorded in his log book, he was just 18 years old when he joined the Air Force on 1st September 1941. After his training, he was sent to the UK during World War 11 for a year where he updated his skills on the latest fighters. In 1978, he became Chief of his beloved Indian Air Force. The book gives insights into these years, particularly his assessment of challenges faced their priorities and his approach and actions in their resolution. The book includes accounts of interesting interactions with leading personalities such as Prime Ministers Smt Indira Gandhi, Shri Morarji Desai, Shri Rajiv Gandhi some Ministers and respected national personalities such as Mr. B. K. Nehru and some of our own Air Chiefs. There are highlights when later as Governor of Maharashtra he was in a totally different environment and the problems that confronted him were also very different. However, the success that he achieved, particularly as chancellor of the University of (then) Bombay, were no less meaningful. As Chairman of the Committee for the celebration of the 25th Anniversary of the State, his proposal to focus on the top priority requirement of every district was appreciated both by the state government and citizens. As Ambassador to France, the book stresses the heart warming and stimulating environment and the opportunities and achievements in the fields of culture, defence and commerce for enhancing Indias image and promoting collaboration for mutual benefit. Shortly before leaving France, a suggestion by Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi took him entirely by surprise. The book concludes with an account of a few special post retirement involvements in matters of national significance.Printed Pages: 394. 104289

4113 Bill Aitken
Footloose in the Himalaya
Orient BlackSwan; New Delhi, India; 2009; 8178242818; Softcover; New;
Away from over-used tourist trails and trekking routes, Bill Aitken wanders through the Himalaya. His inclination is to enter disused colonial dak bungalows and ruined temples, meander in wild glades above the treeline carpeted with wild flowers, filling his water bottle from mountain springs and waterfalls. Having left his native Scotland in his twenties to circumnavigate the world, Aitken reached the Himalaya and stopped, enraptured. He began wandering through these mountains then, and has only stopped on and off in the last forty years to do more mundane things—like travelling the Deccan on his motorbike or chasing the last steam locomotive in India. His journeys in the mountains have ranged from Arunachal to Kashmir, from the icy heights of Zanskar and the Nanda Devi to the small towns of Mussoorie and Ranikhet. For Aitken, travel in the Himalaya is as much about the spirit as about landscapes, leeches, and aching knees. This sets him on a lively trail of holy men, both saintly and fraudulent, across all the pilgrim centres of the Himalaya. He travels in bulging buses to Rishikesh and Badrinath, Kedarnath and Gangotri. He seeks out tiny disused temples to little-known deities like Anasuiya, and discovers a village with temples dedicated to Duryodhana. He spends seven ascetic years in an ashram at Mirtola. All along he gropes for an answer to the question: what power does the Himalaya possess that has drawn generations of seekers to it?If anything distinguishes Aitken from the regular travel writer, it is his inspired craziness. With his wide-ranging, sometimes eccentric, interests, this book is replete with literature, geology, philosophy, and folklore. There are detours into hill gossip, stories of local ghosts, accounts of local customs, and exasperated asides about political ineptitude. Bill Aitken’s intimate knowledge of the Himalaya, absorbed through a lifetime, makes this more a native’s account than a traveller’s.Printed Pages: 268. 101847

The Meditator’s Dilemma: An Innovative Approach to Overcoming Obstacles and Revitalizing Your Practice
Shambhala Publication/TBI; New Delhi, India; 2016; 1611802482; Softcover; New;
When practiced regularly, meditation naturally deepens self-awareness and leads to spiritual insight. In our hyper, instant-gratification culture, however, most people miss out on those powerful outcomes because it’s hard to commit to a long-term practice. Despite the increasing popularity of mindfulness and its documented mental health benefits, the silent majority of meditators struggle to maintain a regular practice. In fact, research indicates that more than fifty percent of meditators give up on the practice. Through time-tested teachings and exercises, The Meditator’s Dilemma shows you how to deepen your meditation practice while cultivating ease and delight—for both beginners and longtime practitioners.The Meditator’s Dilemma, written by a psychologist with forty years’ experience practicing and teaching meditation, confronts this problem and its causes and provides specific, accessible techniques and exercises that greatly enhance everyday meditation practice. Bill Morgan’s teachings and guided meditation exercises are designed to generate the all-too-often missing delight and enjoyment in meditation.A note to readers: Bill Morgan also offers audio guided meditations described in the book at billandsusan.net/home-sweet-home/the-meditators-dilemma. A Guide to Biblical Hebrew Syntax
Cambridge University Press; Cambridge, UK; 2004; 0521533481; First Edition; Paperback; New; 228 x 152 Mm
This introduces and abridges the syntactical features of the original language of the Hebrew Bible or Old Testament. Scholars have made significant progress in recent decades in understanding Biblical Hebrew syntax. Yet intermediate readers seldom have access to this progress due to the technical jargon and sometimes-obscure locations of the scholarly publications. This Guide is an intermediate-level reference grammar for Biblical Hebrew. As such, it assumes an understanding of elementary phonology and morphology, and defines and illustrates the fundamental syntactical features of Biblical Hebrew that most intermediate-level readers struggle to master. The volume divides Biblical Hebrew syntax, and to a lesser extent morphology, into four parts. The first three cover the individual words (nouns, verbs, and particles) with the goal of helping the reader move from morphological and syntactical observations to meaning and significance. The fourth section moves beyond phase-level phenomena and considers the larger relationships of clauses and sentences. • Richly illustrated with examples drawn directly from the Hebrew Bible, translated immediately for quick reference • Provides in-depth treatment of syntactical issues for the intermediate reader • Includes a glossary of all grammatical and linguistic terms, for easy reference Contents Part I. Introduction: Part II. Nouns: 1. Nominative; 2. Genitive; 3. Accusative; 4. Apposition; 5. Adjectives; 6. Determination; Part III. Verbs: 7. Stem; 8. Aspect; 9. Modals; 10. Non-finites; 11. Verbal coordination; Part IV. Particles: 12. Prepositions; 13. Adverbs; 14. Conjunctions; 15. Particles of existence/non-existence; 16. The Particle of hinneh; Part V. Clauses: 17. The Talibanization of Southeast Asia
Vij Books India Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2008; 0275999955; Hardcover; New; New;
Long before the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, awakened the United States and the Western world to the heightened level of the terrorist threat, Southeast Asia had been dealing with this threat. The bombing in Bali that killed 202 people, many of them Australian tourists, was by no means the region's first experience with Islamic extremism, which can be traced back to the 1940s, and the Darul Islam struggle. The most recent group to emerge is Al-Jama'ah Al-Islamiyah (AJAI), the most potent Islamic terrorist organization to date in the region and the group behind the Bali bombing. Understanding the process of Talibanization in Southeast Asia, which was once an oasis of moderate Islam in the modern world, is a key to unraveling the mystery of the increased radicalization in the region. Essentially, this involved the establishment of a political system that was more Islamic in character, either nationally or within a specific territory of a national state. This book analyzes the increasing Talibanization of Southeast Asia, a relatively new phenomenon that involves the adoption of Islamist doctrines, ideologies, and values that are largely militant in character, and that for some groups includes the adoption of violence to achieve their goals. This has succeeded in posing one of the most serious security challenges to the region since the end of the Cold War. Jihadists are operating in small and localized cells even though the broad goals remain the same, namely, to spread sharia, establish an Islamic state, and bring down secular regimes. As most governments do not have the credibility or the expertise to diminish the threat posed by Islamist extremism, Wahhabism, and Salafism, Southeast Asia is in danger of being Talibanized in the near future.Printed Pages: 230. 103309

Development Priorities in North-East India
Concept Publishing Company Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2002; 8170229928; Hardcover; New; New;
There can be no two opinions about the fact that special category status of North Eastern states by itself failed to generate any worth while development and as a result the region continues to remain in the vortex of backwardness. It is against this background that the new development initiatives ought to be taken into account. What is, however, urgently needed is to set forth an agenda for development outlining the priorities so that concerted efforts could be set in motion to achieve the objectives. Hard decisions are indeed needed to tackle misdirected efforts and this calls for investment and entrepreneurial activity. This book provides an indepth analysis of the core issues that require immediate attention of planners and administrators. Printed Pages: 195. 112232

Moral Dilemmas in the Mahabharata
Motilal Banarsidass Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2014; 8120806034; Second Reprint; Softcover; New;
Here the collected papers explore the whole question of the relation between the mythopoetic and the moral in the context of the Mahabharata. Here we have a story of extreme complexity, characters that are unforgettable, and a cosmic context in which gods and men alike grapple with destiny. The obligations of kinship and friendship jostle with each other. The women characters, as in everyday life, seem to bear a very heavy load of the burden of life and to stand in a key position in almost every conflict. We are presented with predicaments at every turn. At times these predicaments seem to be aggravated by social structure. At other times they are cushioned by it. Philosophical tangles tied up with karma and dharma are interwoven with the mythopoetic material. Perhaps philosophical issues are pinpointed rather more than they are in Greek epic literature. The essays in this book treat the Mahabharata from an unusual angle, fastening on the moral dilemmas it presents. How universal are the dilemmas faced by the characters in the story, and are the dilemmas in fact resolved? In dealing with these questions, the discussions range over the meaning of the purusarthas, the institutions of marriage and the family, the concept of action in the Gita and the special predicaments faced by Draupadi, Arjuna and others. These studies invite the scholar to reflect afresh on the text and encourage the general reader to find in epic literature much that is relevant to life today.Printed Pages: 170. 102034

This volume records the fascinating history of the growth and development of Bengal Temples. No systematic enquiry has been made in this important field which remained neglected. This study thus fills up an important gap of the history of Indian Art and Architecture. The author traces not only architectural evolution of the temple architecture but gives a comprehensive survey of the topics which inspired temple-building activities, influence on the architecture of Farther India and Nepal, fresco paintings and terracotta works as well as textual materials on the traditional architecture of Bengal. Moreover, there is a full analysis of socio-religious and political influences which determine the stylistic evolution of the temples of Bengal. The book is thus an important and original work supported by excellent illustrations and map. Bengal Temples contain a brilliant record of the history and culture of this region and speak directly of the art and architectural history they represent. Any one who will consult the book will embark upon some rewarding travel in time and will sense the tone and atmosphere of the cultural history of Bengal. Geography of Early Buddhism
Munshiram Manoharlal Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2008; 812151200X; Reprint; Cloth; New; New; 16.5 Cms x 25 Cms
Bimala Churn Law's Geography of Early Buddhism fulfils the long and acutely felt need for such a work; for many of the topographical features, both real and imaginary described in ancient literature, exist no longer. Early Pali literature, Jataka tales, Asokan inscriptions and the account of Chinese pilgrims contain much geographical information along with a mass of other details. All these scattered facts are collected and arranged here in a systematic manner so as to bring out a coherent geographical picture of ancient India. The chapters are so planned as to bring out clearly the various physical features like boundaries, towns, cities, lakes, rivers and mountains of the five regions-Middle, North, West, South and East-in which India is traditionally divided. The countries-Ceylon, Burma and others which adopted Buddhism later-are also described. A note on Cetiya and a map, showing the important kingdoms, cities, rivers and mountains known in that dim and distant past, are added. Printed Pages: 112 with 1 map. 026245

A History of Pali Literature
Bharatiya Vidya Prakashan; Delhi, India; 2007; 8183900046; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New;
Bimala Churn Law d A History of Pali Literature, author Dr. Bimala Churn Law had intended to publish a comprehensive work on Pali literature. We all know his former publications on Buddhist topics and their intrinsic value, and I repeatedly congratulated him on the happy choice of his themes and on the clever manner in which he had accomplished his task.The first part deals with the chronology and general history of the Pali Pitakas. In the Introduction to this volume I have briefly discussed the origin of Pali and the importance of the study of Pali as one of the Indian languages. A systematic and critical treatment of the puzzling problem of the chronology of the Pali canon follows next, throwing a new light on this intricate and difficult subject.The second part which treats of post-canonical Pali literature is devoted to the study of extra-canonical works presupposed by the Pali commentaries, the PSH chronicles, the Pali manuals, the Pali literary piece, the Pali grammar, lexicographies, and works on rhetoric. In the concluding chapter, he has tried to give a general survey of the whole Book and traced the development of Pali poetry. He has given two appendices dealing with the Historical and Geographical refrences in the Pali Pitakas and the Pali tracts in the inscriptions, which, he believes, will be found useful. He have appended and index at the end of the covenience of readers.Printed Pages: 558. 103819

The Legend of the Topes (Thupavamsa)
Munshiram Manoharlal Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 1986; 8170690005; Reprint; Hardcover; New; 14 Cms x 22 Cms
The Legend of the Topes is a translation of Thupavamsa written by Vacissara Thera, the librarian of King Parakkamabahu (AD 1153-86) of Ceylon. The author sums up the life of the Buddha in a masterly way and gives a detailed account of the topes which were erected over the bodily relics of the Buddha with their later history. The word 'tope' is derived from the Sanskrit stupa which denotes the dome-shaped shrine of the Buddhists. Thupavamsa is divided into two books, the first one dealing with the topes in India and the second with those in Ceylon. The first book tells the story of the Buddha's life, his passing away, the division and distribution of his moral remains and the construction of eighty-four thousand topes during Asoka's reign. According to the author, the tope or stupa represents the bowl, the dress and other articles used by the Great Teacher. The second book takes up the history of Ceylon from the rule of Devanampiyatissa to that of Duttahagamini, who brought the whole of the island under his sway. The author gives a detailed account of how Duttahagamini built the Mahathupa on the great tope without burdening his subjects for special levies for this purpose. As the Mahathupa was nearing completion, Duttahagamini fell seriously ill and entrusted the work of completion of the tope to his younger brother, who resorted to a stratagem, and saw to it that Duttahagamini died with the satisfaction of seeing the Mahathupa in all its splendour. The present work, The Legend of the Topes, translation of Thupavamsa will help the readers to understand and appreciate a Pali traditional work of the late medieval period. This will prove as an invaluable sourcebook of Buddhism and early history of India and Ceylon. Printed Pages: 112. 025695

Reason and Experience in Indian Philosophy
Motilal Banarsidass Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2009; 8189963074; Hardcover; New; New;
Reason and Experience in Indian Philosophy is a philological and critical analysis of two crucial philosophical concepts, viz., "reason" and "experience." The study shows that, though there is no word in Sanskrit which may be taken as equivalent of Western "reason" and "thought," such terms as "tarka," etc., clearly capture parts or aspects of what is meant by "reason" and "thought" (Denken). The second goal of the study is to show that it is misleading to translate "sruti" as revelation." Construing "sruti" as revelation." Construing "sruti" as revelation surreptitiously import a Semitic theological concept into the Vedic tradition. The case of "experience" is more promising because we have such Sanskrit worlds as "anubhava" or "anubhuti," that do translate into "experience." However, "experience" in Western thought has acquired many shades of meaning, and the study determines in what sense the Indian "anubhava" captures the Western "experience." Finally, the book demonstrates that Indian Philosophy provides an account of the cognitive process that begins with perception and culminates in wisdom (highest experience). The whole process may be called "reason," at both ends of which we can talk of experience, which places experience not in an external opposition to reason, but rather as something that belongs to it internally. Thus, the modern Western opposion between reason and experience collapses and the two together yield an integrated process of acquisition, validation, and practical application of knowledge.Printed Pages: 317. 102153

Motilal Banarsidass Publishers Private Limited/Research India Press; New Delhi, India; 2015; 8120813804; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New;
Environmental Sanitation and Eradication of Scavenging in India is a comprehensive sociological treatise based on extraordinary research by Bindeshwar Pathak. The book presents an in-depth understanding of the evolution of sanitation movement coupled with an account of a social awakening for the emancipation of manual scavengers, formerly known as 'untouchables', who faced severe discrimination as they belonged to the lowest stratum of India's caste-based society.It attempts at a comprehensive critique of the policies and programme of environmental sanitation and liberation of scavengers. In the overall context of environmental sanitation and eradication of scavenging, it basically aims at studying the historical context in which scavenging originated and developed; examining its linkages with ecology, health, hygiene and environmental sanitation; probing into various reformative and rehabilitative measures undertaken by a good number of social reformers, voluntary action groups, Governmental and international agencies for the liberation and social upgradation of scavengers; analyzing the policies, programme and problems of low-cost sanitation schemes by Central and State governments; underscoring the pioneering efforts of Sulabh International and its outstanding achievements in the field of environmental sanitation and eradication of scavenging; describing and discussing the relevance of sanitation movement in the liberation of scavengers and the linkages of the liberation programme to the improvement in environmental sanitation; presenting an overarching view of the constraints in the implementation of policies envisioning a better environmental sanitation scenario and a brighter future for the scavengers; and finally, furnishing a sociological perspective on all important dimensions of environental sanitation and eradication of scavenging in India. Continuity.... and Change in Indian Society
Concept Publishing Company Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 1998; 8170227267; Hardcover; New; New;
Indian Society is in a flux. Old equilibrium is disturbed. While traditional legitimacy to the embedded is a thing of the past, present does not seem favourable to the wretched on the earth Process of growth seems to have thrown in its wake stresses and strains that are in need of reconciliation While western models of growth have been rendered unimpressive to the problem of the developing societies emergence of effective alternative strategies for growth with equality tends to be elusive People's response to the forces of modernity remains selective. Tradition survives inspite of strides in modernisation. Old seems to be in incompatible tandum with the new. The context of transition therefore is an important and interesting dimension for research and reflection. There is an urgent need to capture the possibilities and limitations of strategies of change. Resistance and adaptability deserve identification and expert explanation from the professional in social sciences. The work is an attempt to initiate dialogue on change and continuity in Indian society. It seeks to add to the available literature on the theme in order to provide understanding of factors facilitating change as well as those opposed to it. Pattern of change, selective adaptation, stresses and strains in transition, limitations of strategies for change and conflict between ascendants and embedded find scholarly articulation. Gaps in scientific investigation of the context and consequences of change are indentified Priority areas for exploration have been indicated to outline rounded perspective on change and continuity in Indian Society. Known experts seek to explain and elaborate these in depth as well as in coverage. Printed Pages: 390. 112222

Constitutional Safeguards for Weaker Sections and the Minorities in India
Concept Publishing Company Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 1999; 8170227461; Hardcover; New; New;
Backwardness in India had got institutionalised as a result of caste system. The problem is very complex as historical, sociological, political and economic considerations come into play. The Constitution provides for a number of safeguards for the Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes, Backward Classes and the Minorities which are one of its unique features. These safeguards have apparently helped these communities in protecting their legitimate interests and accelerated their socio-economic development. The credit for incorporating these safeguards in the Constitution of India goes to Dr. Bhimrao Ramji Ambedkar, Chairman of the Drafting Committee of the Constitution. It is but for him our Constitution would not have had this distinctive dimension. The founding fathers of the Constitution were men of vision, conscious of the historic but difficult task of carving an egalitarian society form out of a bewildering mass of religions, communities, castes, races, languages, beliefs and practices. They were well aware about the miserable and apathetic living conditions of miserable and apathetic living conditions of Backward Classes, besides the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes. Liberty, equality and fraternity was the battle-cry of the French Revolution. It is also the motto in Indian Constitution, with the concept of "Justice-Social, Economic and Political" . Equality has been and is the craving of all human beings at all points of time which has been referred to in the preamble and the articles under the sub-heading "Right to Equality" (Article 14 and 18). In this book, an attempt has been made to put the safeguards provided in the Constitution for the Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes, Backward Classes and the Minorities at one place and also write a brief commentary on the working of some of them since the Constitution came into force on the 26th January,1950. New Lamps for Old?: Gender Paradoxes of Political Decentralisation in Kerala
Zubaan/Atlantic Publishers & Distributors Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2012; 9789381017180; Hardcover; New; New;
Based on large number of interviews with women politicians of many generations and women who have entered the three-tier Panchyati Raj institutions since the mid ? 1990s in Kerala, this book tries to initiate fresh debate on the impact of the large-scale induction of women into the institutions of local self-government in India. The state of Kerala has been hailed as a success story in accommodating gender concerns in local level planning and political decentralization; this conclusion has been based on relatively simple evaluative exercises that ask whether women of diverse backgrounds have gained entry into formal institutions of governance or not. This book seeks to place political decentralization and its possibilities for women within its historical and contemporary contexts. Against the popular assumption that the liberal feminist promise made by the State will be delivered, say, once the noxious influence of male relatives is removed, the book points to the multiple social forces that shape possibilities and hindrances for women, and reshape gender divisions in the political field. The book thus pays attention to women in both local governance and politics. Secondly, it examines how women have utilized, extended, and survived within or subverted these spaces. At a time when there is a move to reserve fifty per cent of the seats at the local level for women and there is, simultaneously, considerable skepticism about reservations for women in Parliament, this book offers reflections on both local governance and high politics. India Migration Report 2010-2011: The Americas
Cambridge University Press; New Delhi, India; 2012; 1107681030; Softcover; New;
India Migration Report 2010–2011: The Americas discusses historical and contemporary migration between India and the American continents. For more than half-a-century India has been one of the largest source countries of migrants to the US and Canada. A majority of Indian diaspora population in the US and Canada is highly educated and affluent. They hold important positions in the economic and socio-political set-up of these two countries. In contrast the Indians in South America and the Caribbean are not so highly-skilled educated or affluent. A significant proportion of them had migrated much earlier as low-skilled workers for plantations in the colonies. This report is an attempt to examine Indian migration to the two American continents following diverse trajectories. Besides providing an overview of migration from India the report also traces immigration of foreigners and return migration of Indians from the American continents to India. The focus of India Migration Report 2010–2011 is on putting together available information on issues involving various migration patterns and analyzing the major factors and policies that shape them. Under a Cloud: Life in Cheerapunji, the Wettest Place on Earth
Penguin; New Delhi, India; 2004; 0143031422; First Edition; Paperback; New; New; 7" x 9"
‘As midnight approaches there is an aura of expectation in Cherrapunji . . . For a while even the pinpricks of light scattered here and there in the village, like stars in a constellation, seem to stop flickering. And then the rains begin.’ It is rain that has made Cherra famous, and Binoo’s mission is to unravel the mystery behind the curious phenomenon which brings this area as much rain in three months as the rest of the country might not get in a whole year. But as he makes his way into each corner and crevice of Cherrapunji, he discovers that it is much more than the ‘wettest place on earth’. After the bustle and tension of Guwahati and Shillong he finds in Cherrapunji a world of mesmerizing beauty peopled with unusual characters, from uncooperative bureaucrats and friendly auto drivers to women who run their own enterprises and forward-looking individuals who want to bring the sleepy little village from ‘under the cloud’ into the modern world of telephones and tourism. And he takes a quick and curious walk down the lanes of Cherra’s chequered history—a story of nineteenth-century evangelists and proselytization, the beginnings of education, the fierce earthquake of 1897 which almost obliterated the town, and battles against the colonizers. Ranging with consummate ease over topics as varied as religion, cuisine and meteorology, Under a Cloud paints an evocative picture of life in one of the most unusual places in India. History of Modern India
Orient BlackSwan; New Delhi, India; 2009; 8125036849; First Edition; Paperback; New; 15 Cms x 23 Cms
History of Modern India presents an authoritative overview of the history of what was known as British India. The text is largely based on the author’s research on nationalism and colonialism in India and also draws from the works of eminent historians of the period. Challenging and revising colonial and nationalist interpretations of history, this book moves away from a largely political narrative to a social, economic and religious history of modern India. It explains how conditions in India during the eighteenth century helped the British East India Company establish its rule in India. It also gives us important insights into the primary aim of colonial rule which was the economic exploitation of India through trade and investment. The topics are arranged thematically in order to showcase the various forces that went into the making of independent India. However, in the entire arrangement of themes, the chronology of the period is enmeshed innovatively with the various forces that evolved both as a cause and effect of British imperialist rule of the subcontinent. The book also provides a detailed account of the nationalist movement and introduces us to the contributions of different individuals who were behind the nationalist movement. A comprehensive textbook for students of history and interested readers, History of Modern India is essential reading for a broad based understanding of the making of modern India.
